HOW DO WE KNOW LASIK IS SAFE?
Home Services ____________________16
(NAPSI)—For those thinking about their vision correction options, the question “Is LASIK safe?” is likely top of mind. To answer, ophthalmologist and chair of the Refractive Surgery Clinical Committee for the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, John Vukich, M.D., provides hard data:
Hometown Events ____________________33 Kidz Korner _____________________9 Passages ____________________32
LASIK has been around for a long time, 20 years, with 19.1 million procedures in the U.S. alone. An enormous amount of research has been conducted: There are more than 7,000 peer-reviewed clinical studies on LASIK performance, safety and outcomes. Based on that science, we know LASIK is very safe and has a less than 1 percent risk of sight-threatening complications. In fact, studies show LASIK is safer than long-term contact lens wear, where the risk of infection is actually pretty high.

The patient satisfaction rate with LASIK is more than 96 percent, the highest of any elective medical procedure available today. However, LASIK isn’t for everyone. The only way to know for certain is to have a thorough eye exam with a highly qualified refractive surgeon to find out if you are a good candidate and then decide if it is right for you and your vision. ●

4. HOW TO SUPPORT BUSINESSES DURING MANDATORY RESTRICTIONS Recognize that more than food is available for takeout. In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York announced relaxations on laws governing what can and cannot be obtained via takeout, allowing takeout on goods that were previously restricted in regard to takeout. For example, Cuomo announced that the New York State Liquor Authority intended to temporarily relax regulations regarding the takeout and delivery of alcohol. Utilizing such services can be a great way to support local businesses while still adhering to recommendations designed to slow the spread of COVID-19.

WAYS TO SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES Speak with business owners about your experience as a customer, sharing insight about both good and bad experiences.
NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * “Technology is going to be a significant part of our back to school strategy. So, this year, we made sure we have extra chargers and headphones, plus set up a charging station for all school items. We are doing everything we can to be prepared!” -- M.K. in Louisiana * Double crust pies should be cooked on the bottom rack. This will ensure the pie is cooked from the bottom and the top crust will not overbrown. * Cane-bottom chairs feeling a little bit loose? You can tighten the cane by taking them outdoors, thoroughly wetting the seat from the underside with hot water, then letting them dry in the full sun. The drying process can shrink the cane, causing it to tighten. * “I recently inherited a beautiful cedar chest from my grandmother, who is downsizing. To freshen the smell of cedar, we lightly sanded the interior and buffed out the dust with a rag that we put a little cedar oil on. It’s totally renewed and ready for all my heirloom quilts!” -- T.F. in South Carolina * Use a bit of shaving cream to spot clean a carpet. The “soap” is easily controlled and doesn’t spread unless you make it spread. Use a damp, clean sponge to rinse. * Things you can do with chunks of Styrofoam: Use them as filler in a large garden pot so that you don’t need as much potting soil; create a stamp for a fun art project; set a square of thick foam into a small box and poke holes to hold a set of colored pencils upright. For example, NasalGuard Airborne Particle Blocker, an electrostatic topical nasal gel that prevents airborne particles from entering the nose, created the “Breathe Easier Healthcare Workers Donation Program.” The firm offers free nasal gel to any healthcare professional who’d like to try it. Requests can be sent via www.NasalGuard.com. “NasalGuard is drug-free and safe for children, the elderly, pregnant or nursing women, and those concerned about potential drug interactions with other medications,” says Kanika Wahi, a biomedical engineer and co-inventor of the micriofiltration technology. “As people take protective measures to help themselves during this time, NasalGuard is another tool in their arsenal of prevention. We at NasalGuard are proud to support the frontline healthcare workers as well as anyone else in need of preventative products.” The company has long believed in giving back and has donated thousands of units of NasalGuard Airborne Particle Blocker nationally and internationally through a number of well-known charitable organizations.

PAW'S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Loud, Stinky Dog Not What He Ordered DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Help! I’m in over my head. I wanted a dog just like a cute, white, fluffy one that I saw on YouTube, so I bought one online called a “Samoyed” and picked it up at the airport. “Mikey” is cute, white and fluffy, but he’s also hyperactive and loud! He barks all the time. He wants to run outside my apartment. He won’t hold still for pictures. He chews everything, he smells terrible and he poops everywhere. I did not pay for this! How can I get my money back? -- Bilked in Buffal DEAR BILKED: You didn’t get cheated; you got a dog. That’s exactly how dogs behave! They are energetic, communicative, living beings. They love to chew things. Their breath smells kind of funny, and their fur can smell funky after a run outside. They need exercise, training, food and love. Samoyeds like Mikey are especially energetic, because they were originally bred for hunting and as guard dogs. You’ll need to keep him on a leash outside, because he will chase smaller mammals, especially cats and rabbits. He’ll get bigger, too; Samoyeds are medium-large to large dogs. Don’t try to return Mikey or get your money back (if that’s even possible since you bought him online). The trauma you’ll cause him may be unrecoverable. Instead, if you have friends with well-behaved dogs, talk to them and get advice. Pick up a book on caring for Samoyeds. And schedule some sessions with a dog trainer. You chose Mikey to be your family member. He depends on you. He’ll do his best to make you happy, but you need to care for him and show him how to be a good dog. Send your comments and tips to ask@pawscorner.com.

My name is Theo. I am an about 13 years young orange tabby and have lived with my mom and dad since 2010. I am quite a conversationalist and love being with people, especially curled up on their laps. I am a good traveler, going with my snowbird parents south every winter. I sleep all day in my cat carrier and explore the hotel room all night. Then, I sleep again the next day until we arrive at our winter home. My favorite ritual, no matter where I am, is being brushed. Then you can hear me purr in the next county.
Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

Did You Know? Animals verbalize in many different ways to communicate. One thing cat owners may notice is that cats have a tendency to meow as a form of speaking with humans. However, according to the North Shore Animal League America, cats almost never meow at other cats, as meowing is a sound generally reserved for interacting with humans. Cat owners should talk back to their cats often, as cats enjoy hearing their own names and their owners’ voices.

Shopping locally is a great w ay to benefit your community and, in many instances, your bottom line. W hen consumers shop locally, they help stimulate their local economies, creating jobs for their neighbors by helping local businesses grow and thrive. Shopping locally also saves shoppers long trips to the mall that can w aste expensive fuel, especially if consumers don’t find w hat they’re looking for. Shopping locally is especially important w hen the economy is struggling, as smaller businesses are not alw ays as capable of bearing the brunt of a recession as larger ones.

Every day is a new beginning. Take a deep breath, smile & start again.
THANK YOU, WALGREENS CASHIER! Went to Walgreens on Tuesday, July 28th, and Alex, the cashier was not only efficient, but kind, considerate, and patient with me. I had multiple orders, so I went to the check out three separate times. Each and every time, he did not rush me through my orders but was very helpful. As a customer, I really appreciate when a cashier is kind and considerate. Alex was accommodating to my needs, and he did so in a friendly manner. That means a lot to the customers.
SPYING In response to the person who complained about 11 cars parked in their neighbor’s driveway, I’d like to emphasize a few words you used in your rant. You said cars were parked in “his” driveway. Unmasked people were walking into “his” home. Your neighbor makes the rules on his property and in his home. Why are you spying on your neighbor anyway? Ever go to a store that you like to shop at, only to have a slow and unfriendly cashier have to check you out? I have, and it leaves an unpleasant experience in your mind. At Walgreens, in Brockport, I have never had that negative experience. So, Alex, thank you for being so attentive to the needs of your customers. THE PITTSFORD DAIRY What a fun, welcoming atmosphere to help cool down these hot days. Happy, helpful employees and they know how to make a shake! along the shoulder of the road. She was blowing all the grass and debris into the road on both sides. As I went by, I was peppered by grass and small stones. I looked to see if my car was scratched. Luckily, it wasn’t. I know it wasn’t intentional, but if my car had been scratched or dented, I would’ve gotten a police report and have had you pay to fix any my car. If you insist on blowing the grass into the road, at least stop as cars go by.
FOREVER GRATEFUL! On Friday, July 24th I took a hard fall in front of Aldi’s in Batavia. I just want to thank so many people who came to my aid that day. May God’s blessings fall on all of you for all you did on my behalf. I am forever grateful. Thank you; thank you! LIFESPAN’S LONG-TERM CARE OMBUDSMAN PROGRAM Lifespan’s Long-term Care Ombudsman program extends a heartfelt “thank you” to the 50+ volunteers who are trained to take pictures of children in a public place.
TOXIC NEIGHBORHOODS I am dismayed by all the pesticidetreated lawns. Grass lawns are the biggest mono crop in the US, covering more surface area, 40 million acres, than wheat and corn, and we douse it with pesticides year-round. Pesticides don’t magically become safe after application. Pesticide residues remain on the grass even if it’s dry. Apparently, you think you own the public road you live on because it bears your last name. Please remember that your relatives were farmers who fouled up the intersecting state highway with manure, and no one in the neighborhood complained. Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment
AUCTION OF STORAGE UNITS
Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

Rochester Accessible Adventures Promotes Inclusion of People with Disabilities in Recreation & Sports BY ANITA O’BRIEN
R
ochester Accessible Adventures, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, is responding to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic with an ambitious inclusion training movement. Rochester Accessible Adventures Promotes Inclusion of People with Disabilities in Recreation & Sports with Ambitious Online Training Movement During Covid-19. The #WeWillInclude movement connects youth ages 6+ and adults to free 3-hour online training which promotes knowledge and skills for creating inclusive recreation and sports settings. Rochester Accessible Adventures has set the goal of training 2,020 youth and adults in 2020. “In the face of the Covid-19 pandemic, it is imperative that we do not lose the momentum we have gained towards creating a community that is inclusive of youth and adults with disabilities,” said Anita O’Brien, executive director of Rochester Accessible Adventures. “We are very excited about new partnerships we are forming which will foster whole communities of Inclusion Ambassadors to promote inclusion and work with us to remove physical and social barriers which keep people with disabilities from accessing recreation and sports alongside their family members, schoolmates, peers, and work friends.” The #WeWillInclude movement has two components: a way for corporations and philanthropic giving groups to financially support the effort, and online training that is perfect for this extraordinary time when people are staying close to home and learning to rely on their screens for unique learning opportunities for themselves and their families. A number of groups that typically spend time in person during the summer are utilizing the online training for their staff and participants who continue to meet virtually. “Girl Scouts of Western New York values diversity, equity, and inclusion and is proud to join in the #WeWillInclude movement as a way to expand efforts to build a community of young leaders who promote inclusion,”said Alison Wilcox, CEO of Girl Scouts of Western New York. “We look forward to exploring ways our troop leaders, camp counselors, and girls can continue to build these principles of inclusion throughout all of our programs across Western New York as we conduct Summer Camp At Home and future Girl Scout programs.” A video about the ways to be involved in the movement is circulating on social media and outreach networks that have extended across the country, appealing to summer camp programs, schools, social and leadership groups. About Rochester Accessible Adventures Rochester Accessible Adventures’ vision is a world where people with disabilities are physically and socially included in sports and recreation throughout their lifetime. Caregivers should feel empowered to adopt the following tactics to lighten the burden, and achieve a renewed sense of control: Remember your own health: It’s important to not lose sight of your physical and mental health during particularly stressful times. Improve your energy level with smart eating choices: plan easy, healthy recipes that take less than 30 minutes, schedule grocery deliveries, or subscribe to meal kits. And, committing to just 10 minutes a day of moving your body will help you feel energized, while boosting your mental health. Exercise is also a good way to engage with your loved one—join them for a walk or even a water aerobics class. Be transparent with your employer about your role as a caregiver: Burning the midnight oil to meet your caregiver and professional responsibilities doesn’t do you, your loved one, or your career any favors. Speaking candidly about the pressures you face as a caregiver with your employer can help relieve stress in the long run. Discuss options such as flexible work hours or working remotely, and set realistic expectations for yourself. Leverage technology: Utilize tools that offer you visibility into your loved one’s health status and simplify the complexities of coordinating care. These solutions allow you to refocus your attention on the key moments that matter most with your loved ones, while offering the peace of mind of knowing your loved one will have 24/7 access to help. For example, Philips Cares is a mobile application that enables you to easily form and activate a care circle of trusted family and friends, access meaningful insights into your loved one’s wellbeing, and manage your Philips Lifeline personal alert service. It helps you and your care circle be there for your aging loved ones, easing and enriching their aging journey. To learn more about the latest technology helping to ease caregivers’ burdens, visit https://philips. to/2MGDqLm or call (855) 223-7395

DANGEROUS AIRBAGS AFFECT MILLIONS OF DRIVERS (NAPSI)—Roughly 37 million vehicles—across all makes and models— have dangerous, recalled airbags that need to be replaced immediately and they’re FREE. In the event of a crash, the faulty airbags can explode with sharp metal fragments, causing serious injury or even death to the driver or passengers. The easiest way to check if your vehicle has a defective airbag is to find your vehicle’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN), typically located on the driver’s side dashboard by the windshield and on vehicle registration and insurance documents. Next, visit CheckToProtect.org and enter the VIN. Within seconds, you’ll learn whether the vehicle has an open airbag safety recall. If you do have an open airbag recall, call your dealer immediately to set up a FREE repair. Recall repairs are FREE and will always be done at an authorized dealer, even if you purchased the vehicle somewhere else. Alternative transportation may be available at some dealers. Even after you’ve checked your vehicle, it’s important to set a reminder to check every six months for airbag and other safety recall notices. Recalls are announced by automakers throughout the year, and if you miss a recall announcement—or have lost touch with your original dealer—you could be driving a vehicle with a dangerous safety recall. To help protect your family and friends from these dangerous airbags, encourage everyone you know to Check To Protect today. AUTOMOTIVE

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles
Getting Up Off the Floor With aging, we lose muscle. With all the staying home we're doing now, we're losing more muscle. We have to fight against that. One serious result of losing muscle at our age is the simple task of getting up off the floor. It can happen to anybody our age: You look for something at the back of the bottom shelf of the refrigerator, and suddenly there you are, sitting on the kitchen floor, unable to get up. Even if you can reach the phone to call for help, think about what happens next. The EMT crew will show up, but they won't come rushing in. Not nowadays. Now they want to determine whether or not you're likely to have the COVID virus. If there's any risk at all, they're likely to suit up with all their biohazard gear before they even come in the house. The best way to avoid all that drama is to not lose those muscles and to know a few techniques for getting up again. Put these search words into YouTube or even your browser: "seniors get off floor muscles." Some specific YouTube channels you can search through for helpful exercises and techniques are "Eldergym Fitness for Seniors," "Ernie Schramayr" and "Bob & Brad." (These last two guys are physical therapists with a great sense of humor. In fact, click Videos and look through all their offerings.) When you find something you like, bookmark it. Then, when you have the muscles and the technique, test it once a week. Get down on the floor, get up. Even if you're certain you'd have no problems, test it anyway. With aging you never know.
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

Immunotherapy is a medical treatment that uses portions of the immune system to fight diseases like cancer. Immune cells and the substances they make travel through the body and protect it from foreign invaders, says the American Cancer Society. Immunotherapy includes a combination of treatments. Some boost the body’s immune system in a very general way. Others help train the immune system to attack cancer cells specifically.

REDUCE YOUR RISK OF STROKE (NAPSI)—An estimated 2.7 million Americans are living with a condition that can lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure and other heart-related complications. Fortunately, a leading health organization is working to help these individuals reduce their risk of developing such dangerous conditions. Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is defined as a quivering or irregular heartbeat. Often, strokes that occur for no known cause can be linked to AFib, which a person may not even be aware they have.
Dr. Matthew Sheldon Now seeing patients at
The American Heart Association (AHA)—the world’s leading voluntary health organization dedicated to being a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives—wants all people living with AFib to understand how they can reduce their risk of cardiac complications.
24 East Main St. (Route 33), Corfu, NY
“AFib can have symptoms such as an irregular-feeling heartbeat, shortness of breath and light-headedness or it can have no symptoms at all. Even if you are not experiencing symptoms of AFib, your stroke risk is still increased five-fold,” says Patrick Ellinor, M.D., Ph.D., cardiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Our 2nd location
Mark Doerr, M.D.
Health care providers score a patient’s risk of a stroke caused by AFib by taking into account such factors as age, sex, and pre-existing conditions including hypertension, diabetes, vascular disease, and prior stroke or ischemic attack.
408 Main St., Warsaw, NY
“If you suspect you have AFib, meet with your doctor. AFib can be managed, helping you avoid stroke and live a longer, healthier life,” adds Ellinor. The AHA offers a free online community for those diagnosed with AFib, My Afib Experience. The initiative was made possible by an educational grant from the Bristol Myers Squibb and Pfizer Alliance. TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Removing Gallbladder Didn’t End Gallstones --DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband had his gallbladder removed many years ago. In the past few years, he has had six ERCPs to remove gallstones from his bile duct, as he is still making them. He has been told to drink lots of water but that there is no preventive remedy. Do you have any suggestions for how to prevent these gallstones from forming? -- B.A.P. ANSWER: Ordinarily, removing the gallbladder stops new gallstones from forming. Having a gallstone left after surgery is not uncommon, but it is very uncommon for people to make multiple new stones years after surgery. One possibility is a diverticulum of the common bile duct. The common bile duct drains bile from the liver and gallbladder into the small intestine; it drains pancreatic fluid, too. A diverticulum is a blind pouch. It’s possible for a stone to form there, so you should find out if he has one. They should have seen it on one of the ERCPs (a special endoscopy that looks at the bile and pancreatic ducts). If present, a diverticulum can be removed surgically. I asked my colleague at Weill Cornell, Dr. Arun Jesudian, for his expertise, and he said he has seen multiple stones in the liver due to parasitic infections, often in Asian patients. That may require surgical treatment. He also discussed doing a sphincterotomy, which is a procedure to open the end of the common bile duct, to let stones pass through easily. Your husband may benefit from expanding it. Finally, there is a medication to reduce gallstones, ursodiol (Actigall), which Dr. Jesudian feels had no real downsides and might well help. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a female, 53, who suffers from and is being treated for IBS. I have a history of colon cancer in my family. My family members and I go through regular screenings and so far, we’ve been clean. Once in a while, I wake up feeling a sharp, stabbing pain in my rectal area that lasts no more than 20-30 minutes before going away. These pains occur no more than once a month, sometimes every few months, but the pain often happens while I’m asleep and wakes me up. Luckily, there have been no bloody or black stools or urine following this, much to my relief. I’ve talked to my gastroenterologist about it, and he’s as clueless as I am. I do exercise and watch what I eat. Could it be gas? At least the pain is short-lived, so it doesn’t interfere with my daily activities or routine. -- A. ANSWER: Irritable bowel syndrome is a common problem, found more frequently in women, that ranges from annoying to lifechanging. Although it does not predispose to cancer or reduce life expectancy, IBS can have dramatic effects on a person’s social and work lives. The hallmarks of IBS are bowel changes (diarrhea, constipation or sometimes both, alternating) and abdominal discomfort. The discomfort is usually described as cramping, but it is not unheard of to be described as sharp or stabbing. I believe a colonoscopy is appropriate to be sure IBS is not actually a different problem, such as inflammatory bowel disease. Black or bloody stools would be concerning for IBD not IBS. Your symptoms are not typical for colon cancer, which often has no symptoms until it is quite advanced, making regular screening so important. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2020 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

ELSIE’S STEWED APPLES Serves 6 to 8 2 to 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 pounds apples, peeled, cored and cut into thick slices 1/2 cup honey, preferably sage honey 1/2 cup white wine Zest of 1 lemon Juice of 1 lemon Fresh sage sprigs for garnish 1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the apples, turn the heat to high and sauté until they begin to brown on the edges, about 5 minutes. If some are getting too well done, remove them and place on a plate while the rest continue to cook, then return them to the skillet when all are done. 2. Reduce the heat to low and add the honey, wine, lemon zest, lemon juice, and 1/2 cup water. Cover and allow to cook until the apples are tender but still firm; you don’t want them to turn into applesauce. 3. Serve this in a bowl, tuck in a couple sprigs of fresh sage from your garden, and tell your guests all about sage honey.

Our magnolia tree is dropping some kind of black residue on the ground. Wondering if it has a fungus problem? What should be done to eliminate it? - Pam M. Yes, your Magnolia tree does have a problem but it is not a fungus. Rather, the problem is an insect called “Magnolia Scale.” This is an insect that starts out as a small, six-legged crawler in early spring which finds a tender spot on a branch, attaches itself and begins feeding on the sweet sap of the Magnolia tree. As it feeds, it grows a protective shell or covering which looks like a scale and turns whitish. The scale insects
excrete excess sap called “Honey Dew” which drops down on lower leaves and on anything below the tree. A fungus called “Sooty Mold” grows on the coating of honey dew and turns black. While the black residue is sticky and unsightly, it is usually not harmful. The scale infestation, however, can weaken the tree and cause limbs to die back.
