CHALLENGES OF GOING REMOTE WITH YOUR BUSINESS CUSTOMER SERVICE: Ensuring customers can seamlessly connect with your business, and your customer service staff in particular, should be a priority when switching to a remote work setting. Remote customer service employees won’t have the direct access to management and fellow team members that they had when working on-site, so business owners can employ central management platforms that make it easy to access information regarding new products and services and previous interactions with and responses to customers. That access can help solve issues while reducing the likelihood of substantial lag time as customer service employees wait to hear from coworkers and managers about how to respond to certain issues.

* Glass and chrome will shine if you clean them with newspaper. You can mist the paper with water first, but not too much. Rub ... and the shine comes right out, plus no streaks or lint! * “Use purified water in your coffeemaker to lengthen its life. Water deposits build up and affect both the flavor and function of your machine. They can be cleaned, but it’s much better if you use purified drinking water from a jug. It makes it very easy to fill the machine, too.” -- M.E. in Wyoming * “Purchase colorful laundry baskets for each child in your home. In the evening, you can have the child find all his or her stray items, put them in the basket and then put them away. In our house, the kids also use their basket to hold anything they need for school the next day -- backpack, coats and outerwear, even boots. We stack the baskets by the door, and nothing gets left behind.” -P.W. in Missouri

INNOVATIVE SCHOOL IS A TRAINING GROUND FOR ARTISTS

299

(NAPSI)—Art classes have slowly but steadily all but disappeared from public schools over the years. Lack of funding has been the culprit, but educators tend to agree that the arts play a crucial role in the academic and creative development of our children. One public school in Greenville, South Carolina is embracing a different model and provides a haven for young artists from across the state to discover, develop and hone their talents. The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities offers preprofessional training to its students in the areas of creative writing, dance, drama, music, and visual arts. As a public, residential high school serving juniors and seniors, it helps students refine their talents in a master-apprentice community while receiving nationally recognized academic education.

The Governor’s School also serves as a resource to all teachers and students in South Carolina, offering comprehensive outreach programs designed to bring together artists, educators, community organizations, and schools. The school is supported by its own foundation—The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities Foundation—by raising revenues to bridge the gap between funds provided to the school through government appropriation and the actual cost of the educational opportunities the school provides to its students. This extraordinary school recently captured the attention of Ovation TV, a cable and digital channel that is dedicated to the arts. Ovation and local cable provider Spectrum acknowledged the school’s contributions to the community and innovative approach to arts education and skills development with a $10,000 award via its Stand for the Arts arts advocacy initiative. SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities’ success provides a great lesson for communities across the country looking to support the arts and encourage the creative development of their youth. Rock Complaint Really, complaining about painted rocks. What a privileged life you must lead if this is the major concern in your life. They are just painted rocks; move on.

S E V RA Finicky bird Several weeks ago, a little bird, a house wren, began building a nest in the Penny Saver delivery tube. She made a considerable pile of small twigs, filling the tube about 1/2 full. So, I contacted the carriers for the Genesee Valley Penny Saver, all of whom cooperated and used different delivery tubes. But after all the commotion, that little bird never laid a single egg! She had worked so hard, but it wasn’t a very good spot for a nest. Anyway, thanks to the various carriers! We all tried to help, but apparently the little wren didn’t like the location she chose after all. - Sincerely, a bird watcher Thank you, farmers! Thank you to Merrimac Farms, Livingston County Farm Bureau, and all the farmers & volunteers for the well organized Farm Fest on Saturday, September 11, 2021. It was a great family event, very educational & entertaining for all. We are very lucky to have so many devoted farm families in Livingston County. Thanks so much because without farmers we would be hungry & thirsty. May all your days be blessed & know you are appreciated. Thanks! Can’t thank you enough! The Elba Betterment Committee would like to thank everyone, not only in Elba, but also in our surrounding communities for the outpouring of support for our summer concert series - EBC Music and More 2.0. The musicians - who helped us navigate through the staging and presentation - were just phenomenal! The vendors - providing food and beverages with friendly and professional service; Christine White, for your patience and expertise with the advertising; GO Art! for the opportunity to present this amazing series to our community; and the Village of Elba for letting us use our beautiful park free of charge. So many people commented on what a wonderful place it is. And of course, thank you to all of the people who came out to the festivals - even in the pouring rain - we cannot say enough about your loyalty, support, positive comments and smiling faces! We hope to see you again next year!

Social Security not a perk I am a 73-year-old single lady by circumstance. My Social Security takes up most of my mortgage. I have to work in order to make a car payment, pay utilities, insurance, gas, medication, etc. Food is at the bottom of the list. I will continue to work because I have to, like so many others. Social Security was taken out of my pay weekly since I was 18 years old. I would say that 55 years worth of deductions belongs to me and to everyone who reaches the age to collect SSI regardless if they work or not. I’m fortunate that I am able to work 30 hours a week, but who knows what the future will bring. Social Security is not a perk for older workers; it belongs to us senior citizens! Social Security not doubled response Are you suggesting that a company is some magical floating entity that exists to pay bills and taxes and offer “perks” to the owner? Who do you think works seven days a week, 365 days a year, with no benefits, no healthcare, no pension, no paid days off, no dental? Who pays self-employment tax? Whose personal bank account do all taxes come out of, including both the company’s and the owner’s share of Social Security? The “company” does not pay for these things. Try running your own business before “educating” others on what they do and do not pay.

WEDDING REGISTRY TIPS Don’t hesitate to include expensive items on your registry. Couples also may be hesitant to include especially expensive items on their wedding registries. However, the couples’ parents and other close relatives may be honored to purchase more expensive items, so couples should not feel embarrassed to include them on their lists. It’s also important to note that many retailers, after couples’ wedding days have come and gone, discount registry items that weren’t purchased. So even if no one purchases the more expensive items, including them on a registry may significantly reduce their cost for couples who want to buy such items themselves after tying the knot.

hroughout the summer you would traditionally see 4-H participants at a variety of fairs including the local, county and state fairs. With the cancellation of the Monroe County Fair, and the inability for 4-H to participate in the New York State Fair due to COVID-19 restrictions, it became crucial for youth to have opportunities to learn about 4-H, participate in hands-on experiences, and to offer 4-H’ers the chance to showcase projects worked on throughout the 4-H year. In collaboration with the Strong One of the 4-H A Summer of Play displays! National Museum of Play, Monroe County 4-H introduced 4-H Grows With A Summer of Play. This was a weekly experience that took place at the museum as well as virtually and at organizations and events throughout Monroe County.

For seven weeks, starting on July 19th and ending August 30th, the 4-H program organized weekly activities for youth to participate in hands-on learning experiences that aligned with the museum’s theme of the week. Following the program at the museum, 4-H brought the developed activities to locations across Monroe County, reaching youth at Agape Haven of Abundance, Friendship Children’s Center, 490 Farmers Garden District Farmers Market, and The YMCA Center for Equity.

Controller

........................Kathy Hammond Advertising Sales Manager

Throughout the summer, youth participated in a variety of activities from weaving potholders, to creating their own animal tracks, creating animal safari masks to building fairy house doors! A very special week-long event, Down On The Farm, gave youth the opportunity to visit different farm animals every day of the week, including chickens, bunnies, and a calf brought by the Monroe County Dairy Princess.

...........................Manuel Karam Creative Director

.............................. Cristie Leone

4-H Grows With A Summer of Play concluded with a 4-H Smoothie Making Challenge as well as a 4-H Project Showcase at The Strong Museum of Play. The 4-H Project showcase gave youth from Cayuga, Livingston, Wyoming, Seneca, Monroe, and Wayne counties the chance to display 4-H projects that would have been displayed at the New York State Fair. 4-H Grows With A Summer of Play gave over five hundred youth the opportunity to participate in hands-on learning experiences and the chance to learn about 4-H in Monroe County.

The Monroe County 4-H Program is offered through Cornell Cooperative Extension to the youth of Monroe County. 4-H is a worldwide youth development program open to all youth ages 5 to 19, who want to have fun, learn new skills, and explore the world. In return, youth participate in 4-H and a supportive environment and opportunities for hands-on or “experiential” learning about topics that interest them. Magic Maze

By Lucie Winborne * In the early 1800s, a railroad marketer set up a head-on collision between two trains as a publicity stunt. Some 40,000 people came to watch, and the resulting boiler explosion killed three spectators. But ticket sales soared, and railways everywhere staged train crashes right up until the Great Depression. * One of the weirdest scandals in sports history occurred in 1973 when New York Yankees players Fritz Peterson and Mike Kekich decided to trade families -- wives, children, even dogs! After the couples became close friends, Peterson fell in love with Kekich’s wife and vice versa. “It’s a love story. It wasn’t anything dirty,” Peterson told a reporter in 2013. Peterson is still married to the former Mrs. Kekich, but Kekich and the former Mrs. Peterson later split up.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Recreation Center Shuttered Again Well, that certainly didn’t last long. My town’s recreation center opened last week for indoor walking only -- no classes, no basketball, no anything else -- then shut down again just as quickly. It seemed like it would be safe: only a certain number allowed into the building at one time, no walking with a buddy, walking by yourself in one lane on the track, enter the building at your designated time and leave when your time is up. What could go wrong? What went wrong was the Mask Police. We’re supposed to be able to exercise without a mask. Except, cried the Mask Police, we would be exercising indoors. Indoors equals need for masks. I hear it was a very heated board meeting, with those on opposing sides quite vocal in presenting their cases. The anti-mask contingent was adamant that it was dangerous to ask us to mask up while exercising. The Mask Police insisted that COVID-positive people would be exhaling germs all over the rec center. They even brought charts and graphs. In the end, the rec center supervisor threw his hands in the air and declared the center closed for the foreseeable future. Meanwhile, there’s a bright spot on the horizon for this winter. The local senior center is once again hosting the Senior Health Fair. The purpose of the annual event is to link seniors with resources in the area. Companies and providers sign up to showcase their wares and offerings, including housing, products aimed at seniors, fitness, legal help, the fire department, senior-living retirement communities, the YMCA, medical services, athome nurse visits and much more. This year, however, like last year, it will all be online. Each exhibitor will have videos and “live” online events that seniors can “visit” via computer. There will be entertainment, but unfortunately, no snack tables.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

HOW COLLEGE STUDENTS CAN CUT LIVING EXPENSES Buy secondhand furnishings. College students living in their own apartments or dorm rooms may not have the financial resources to purchase new furniture. Rather than purchasing brand new items they are likely to discard after moving out or graduating, college students can purchase secondhand items from local thrift stores or used furniture retailers that offer sturdy furnishings at low prices.

Tipping men and women who work in the food service industry is commonplace in the United States and Canada, where citizens typically tip between 15 and 20 percent when dining out at restaurants. But American and Canadian travelers about to depart for overseas destinations may want to familiarize themselves with the practices regarding gratuities before their planes touch down. Some countries automatically add gratuities onto customers’ bills. For example, the government in Dubai mandates that a 10 percent service charge be added to all hotel, restaurant and bar bills. This service charge is then divided by the staff at the establishment, making the charge the equivalent of a tip. Diners in Morocco, where the gratuity is sometimes included in the bill, might be surprised to learn that a 10 percent tip in that country is considered generous. Tips are included in the bill in Costa Rica, where travelers need not feel obligated to leave any additional gratuities. Service is often included in the bill within the United Kingdom as well, though travelers should inspect the bill before assuming gratuity was included. Visitors to Spain should not feel obligated to leave a gratuity larger than 13 percent, and even a tip in the range of 7 percent is considered acceptable.

Apps have progressed quite a bit in a short period of time! Some of my favorite apps are: PictureThis, PlantSnap, and SoilWeb. Once your app has provided your requested information, use internet resources including Google Images to verify the response you receive. Plants are often GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Many people may be tempted to discard rusty tools that have gone unused and sat in a garage or shed for a significant period of time. But tools encrusted with rust do not need to be relegated to the trash bin, nor do gardeners have to toil for hours scraping and sanding off the rust. There’s a much easier way to restore rusty tools that relies on a common household ingredient: vinegar. Pour vinegar into a deep enough vessel to submerge the metal part of the tool. Soak the tool overnight. The next day, use a scouring pad to rub off the rust. If the tool is too big to fit into a can or bucket, simply wrap it with a vinegarsoaked rag and cover the whole tool with a tightly secured plastic bag. Follow the same procedure the next day. After all the rust is gone, rinse the tool in cool water and dry thoroughly. Then return it to regular usage.

HOMETOWN

Irving W. Goodman September 9, 2021 Irving W. Goodman went home to the Lord Sept. 9, 2021 after a brief illness. He was a son of Walter and Irene Goodman. He is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Patricia (Diehl) Goodman; his daughter, Kimberly Truitt; sons, Eric (Trina) Goodman, Jerome Piepenburg, George and James Diehl; his sister, Emily Chamberlain; brothers, Larry (Nancy), Herb (Elsie), Allen (Ginny) and Dennis ( Joan). He was a Korean veteran and retired truck driver. He also had 12 grandchildren (1 deceased) and 6 great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sept. 19 at Genesee Country Church in Oakfield. He donated his body to UB for research. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to his wife for expenses.

THE BENEFITS OF PREPLANNING YOUR FUNERAL Preplanning protects families faced with sudden death. Few people want to think about their deaths, and fewer still want to think about dying suddenly and/or dying young. Preplanning a funeral and setting money aside early can protect and help families faced with sudden deaths. That can be especially important for young parents, who won’t want to leave their spouses and children financially destitute should they suddenly pass away.

Floyd Miller September 10, 2021 Floyd Miller, 90, a resident of Harrisonburg, passed away Friday, September 10, 2021 at Sentara RMH Medical Center. Floyd was born June 3, 1931, in Williamsville, NY and was a son of the late Alvin and Mary Edna Miller. On August 10, 1958, he married Shirley Ann (Murray) Miller who survives. Also surviving are his four children (from his 1st wife, as he used to enjoy saying), Darlene ( Joel) Lehman of Harrisonburg, VA, Daniel Miller of Darien, NY, Douglas (Sue) Miller of Corfu, NY, and Debra (Conrad) Brenneman of Goshen, IN; and siblings, Paul Miller, James Miller, David Miller, and Mamie Mellinger. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, Floyd was preceded in death by a brother, Daniel. A member of Alden Mennonite Church, Floyd’s deep faith was evidenced in every aspect of his life, in his relationships and lifestyle. His lifelong vocation as a dairy farmer in Western New York was also his passion. He was a master storyteller and poet. Floyd was known for his quick wit, his knack of relating to everyone, his patience, and kindness to all he encountered. In his retirement years, Floyd enjoyed volunteering at VMRC and Book Savers. He will be dearly missed. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS 583 Airport Rd, Lititz, PA 17543). Visitation will take place at Zion Mennonite Church on Friday, September 17, from 10:00-10:45 a.m. with a Memorial Service following at 11:00. Masks are required. A private burial will be held at a later date in Western New York. Online condolences may be made to the family by visiting www.mcmullenfh.com. McMullen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. We Care About

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Your Smiles

By Keith Roach, M.D.

by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy

THE DISCOMFORT OF UNEXPECTED DENTAL EXPENSES Dental pain can be ruthless. Throbbing, swelling, infection, sensitivity, and disruption of eating and drinking may all result from an unexpected dental problem. Often, the cost of emergency dental work, even with the best insurance plans, may require time-consuming approval periods, adds to the pain. Recently, many practices have introduced financial assistance platforms that assist patients without breaking the bank. One such innovator, CareCredit, finances medical and dental procedures. These financial programs have various rates, even for those with poor credit. Platforms allow an initial low or no interest payment period permitting patients to pay in installments. The stipulation is that once the grace period ends, the interest rate escalates, which can be costly, depending on the procedure.

Dentistry is an investment in the most important thing you possess—your body. And like any good investment, it will require some expenditure of time and effort. We can think of no better investment than one that will give you many years of comfort, better health, and a more youthful, pleasant appearance. If you have questions about the health of your teeth and gums, please feel free to call BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL at 585.343.4246. Comfortable, comprehensive dental services await you at 6 Batavia City Centre. Most major insurance plans accepted.

P. S. CareCredit has been providing valuable financing options for treatments and procedures for over 30 years.

RELEASE, REFRESH, RESET (NAPSI)—You don’t have to let a busy schedule break your healthy stride or keep you from crushing your goals. You can regroup on your approach instead. By incorporating these three ways to release, refresh and reset, you can still make health a priority. 1. Release Your Mind by Escaping into Nature. Getting out into nature gives you the space and peace to release the things that bog you down. Escape the rush. Try camping in the wilderness or taking a scenic hike. Studies show that surrounding yourself with nature can have positive effects on mental health. Ditch the office and try working outdoors at a picnic table or on a blanket in the grass. Wherever you go, whatever you do, sit back and breathe in the fresh air. 2. Refresh Your Exercise Routine with New Moves. Inspiration derives from new experiences, which is why exercise physiologist and Bowflex fitness advisor Tom Holland recommends mixing up your daily workout routine. “Give yourself the opportunity to explore and challenge yourself in new ways,” suggests Holland. Try a new workout program, or an exercise machine that moves you in new ways, such as the breakthrough Bowflex LateralX (www.bowflex.com/lateralx) cardio machine. It strengthens and activates muscles with side-to-side, pushand-pull and stand-and-squat motions that target the arms, back, hips and core, as well as common trouble spots including glutes, hamstrings and quads. By moving in all directions, you mimic everyday activities such as yard work, housecleaning or chasing after your kids. It’s a new and exciting workout that can keep you motivated. 3. Reset Your Soul with Time for Yourself. In addition to carving out time for fitness, you need to make time for yourself. Creating positive energy in a chaotic world can be challenging but it’s important for overall health and well-being. You don’t have to be a yogi to meditate. Experts say to start small—try focusing for 10 minutes a day in a quiet place and don’t get frustrated if your mind wanders. It takes practice but the benefits are worth the investment. You may find you’re more calm and productive and you sleep better. Whatever helps you reset, create time in your schedule and act on it. You owe it to yourself. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Estrogen Insert May Help With Bladder Problems ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 83-year-old female with bladder problems. I get up two or three times a night and usually make it to the bathroom. I thought it would be good to see a doctor in case the problem got worse. An operation was mentioned, which I am not interested in, so they gave me a pessary, which has been good and bad. It is comfortable and I don’t have to use the bathroom as often, but now I don’t get bathroom warnings and don’t always make it to the bathroom. I also leak urine with coughs and sneezes, which didn’t happen before. Now the doctor wants me to use Imvexxy inserts. After reading the side effects, I’m not sure that’s a good thing to do. What are your thoughts: Is the Imvexxy necessary? The side effects really scare me. -- Anon. ANSWER: You have symptoms of both urge incontinence (the sensation of needing to get to the bathroom right away to avoid an accident) and stress incontinence (losing urine with abdominal pressure, such as cough or sneeze). It is possible that you have two separate problems. However, loss of estrogen can cause the lining of the vagina and vulva to thin. This includes the urethra, which provides conscious control over urinary flow. It needs estrogen to close optimally, and older women often have stress or urge incontinence (or both, which is called mixed) due to lack of estrogen. Imvexxy (estradiol) is a low-dose estrogen preparation inserted in the vagina, usually daily for two weeks then twice weekly thereafter. It is a very reasonable choice for women with symptoms of urge or stress incontinence and who have findings of estrogen loss on physical exam. The low dose makes side effects uncommon (in the initial trial of 764 women, there were no adverse effects that happened in women using estradiol at greater frequency than in the placebo group). ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

Your fungal toenails before SUMMER 2022 • Were you embarrassed this summer to wear sandals or go barefoot because of thick, yellow nails? • Now’s the time to get treatment. If left untreated, fungal toenails can: affect your immune system, cause recurring athlete’s foot, infected ingrown toenails (requiring surgery) and discomort wearing shoes, not to mention their unsightly appearance! • Patients with diabetes, poor circulation and numbness to their feet can develop more serious problems. • There are also safer new topical medications available to help cure fungal toenails. • A simple one-a-day pill for 3 months will usually cure fungal toenails within 6-9 months from the start of treatment. • Treatment now may result in clear, thinner nails for the year 2022. • Call now for an appointment to determine if you’re a candidate for this newer treatment.

Brewer’s Yeast and Pet Allergies

Hello, I’m Loki!

Full Grooming Services

585-682-3219 anitaspuppypalace.com

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read an article that says brewer’s yeast is safe for cats and dogs. I disagree. I found several more articles online that say pets can be allergic to brewer’s yeast. What do you say about that? -- Carla L, via email DEAR CARLA: Pet owners should always research and evaluate the risks of any supplement for their pets. Brewer’s yeast is a mainstay for owners trying to find a natural flea control treatment, and others swear that its blend of B vitamins makes their pets healthier. It has been found that brewer’s yeast created for humans often contains ingredients like garlic and onions that are downright toxic to pets. Owners should purchase only brewer’s yeast formulated for dogs or cats, as PetMD notes (www.petmd. com/dog/nutrition/brewers-yeast-dogs-understanding-benefits-and-risks). Here are some other tips for picking the right brewer’s yeast: -- Give only the amount recommended for your pet’s size. -- Brewer’s yeast that has been “de-bittered” lacks chromium, a mineral that helps regulate blood sugar in humans but hasn’t been studied in dogs. -- Read the label carefully: Some brewer’s yeast for pets contains garlic, which can be toxic, especially for smaller pets. -- Consider a brewer’s yeast that includes omega-3 oils for added benefits. -- This supplement can add up to 80 calories to your pet’s meal. It can also cause excess gas. Some pets really are allergic to the yeast itself, though. Avoid giving brewer’s yeast to dogs with known yeast allergy, who have digestive illnesses like colitis, or who are immunocompromised. Always monitor your pet for new behaviors or symptoms after giving them any new supplement. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

This is a picture of me hooked up because I ran away from mom. I love to be outside but not hooked up. I’m a cuddle bug and love to jump on mom’s bed and on the couch. I am a treat monster and my favorite toy to play with is Mr. Bear. I am a 15-week-old golden doodle husky mix and I weigh 22 pounds already. I’m growing up fast!

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

HOUSEBREAKING PUPPIES Arguably one of the most challenging - and often frustrating - components about puppyhood is training the dog to use the outdoors for bathroom needs. It’s easy to underestimate the time involved in housebreaking a puppy. The Humane Society of America says puppies typically can control their bladders for one hour for every month of age. That means if the dog is three months old, he can hold it for about three hours.

DID YOU KNOW? Numerous studies have found that vacationing produces a host of health benefits. The ongoing Framingham Heart Study, which began in 1948 and is currently studying its third generation of participants, found that men who did not take a vacation for several years were 30 percent more likely to have heart attacks than men who took time off. In addition, the FHS found women who take a vacation only once every six years or less were nearly eight times as likely to develop coronary heart disease or have a heart attack as women who vacation at least twice per year. Vacations also have been linked to lower stress levels, as a study from the American Psychological Association concluded that vacations reduce stress by removing people from activities and environments that are the sources of their stress. Vacations can even benefit employers, as an internal study from the professional services firm Ernst & Young found that employees’ year-end performance ratings improved by 8 percent for each additional 10 hours of vacation time they took.

BE SAFE, HEALTHY AND HAPPY IN THE WORKPLACE WHILE PREGNANT Under the Family and Medical Leave Act, women in the United States are entitled to 12 weeks maternity leave. Women can choose to use a portion of that maternity leave even before their children are born if physical limitations are making it challenging for them to continue working. Women should put their health and the safety of their unborn children ahead of their responsibilities at work. In addition, women should not hesitate to speak with their employers about their comfort levels while pregnant. If an issue arises, speak with your boss, who deserves the benefit of the doubt. In some instances, breastfeeding also is protected by law at job sites or at the office. It is best for women to familiarize themselves with breastfeeding policies ahead of time so they can make the proper accommodations. Pregnant women should discuss with their doctors which work activities are permissable and which should be avoided at particular times in the pregnancy. Every effort should be made to avoid toxic substances, and pregnant women should not lift heavy items or engage in any potentially risky physical activity.
