PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Badly Behaved Dogs Need Basic Commands DEAR PAW’S CORNER:
Every time I read an article about a badly behaved dog, the trainer says that the dog needs to relearn basic commands like sit, stay and lie down. Why would unrelated commands solve a behavior problem? -- Edward in Albany, New York DEAR EDWARD: Every dog should be trained to respond to five basic commands: come, heel, sit, stay and lie down. Dogs need to obey their owner the first time and every time a command is issued. That may sound a little harsh, but a dog that can’t be controlled is a dog in danger. Owners need to be able to recall a dog that has slipped its leash before it runs into traffic. They need to make sure their dog will walk beside them and will sit calmly on command, especially when another dog approaches. Their dog needs to stay in position when told to do so -- whether sitting or lying down. Dogs aren’t robots, though. Like us, their discipline and training will slip if not regularly reinforced. Think about how often you and I give in to temptation and take that second cookie (or third or fourth or fifth). Just as we humans sometimes need reinforcement of good habits, our dogs need regular reinforcement of basic commands. When owners spend more time working one-on-one with their dogs, they frequently report that undesirable behaviors happen less often. The time and attention that owners give can quickly blunt attention-seeking behaviors. The AKC has a good breakdown of the basic dog commands here: www.akc. org/ expert-advice/training/ and search for “5 basic commands.” Energetic young dogs can be a handful sometimes. If you are having trouble getting your dog to respond to basic commands, enlist the help of a professional trainer. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

99¢ 4974 Ellicott St. Rd. (Rt. 63) Batavia, NY LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Crowd control: Local restaurants tend to be smaller and more intimate than many chain restaurants. This can translate into a calm dining experience. When crowds are small, the noise level inside the restaurant may be muted and service may be fast because there aren’t as many tables to serve. Furthermore, local establishments, although concerned about making a profit, may be less worried about table turnover rate, preferring to let diners linger if it means repeat business.

LEARNING GOLF CAN BE GOOD FOR YOUR CAREER (NAPSI)—Many women, looking to advance in their careers, have found the grass is always greener—on the golf course. As golf remains an important piece of business culture, it is important to empower women to feel confident on the course. Just knowing the basics of the game could encourage participation in key business decisions taking place on the course every day.
“CLASSIC COUNTRY” Celebrating 50 years (1970-2020)
Why Play Golf Consider these stats and facts from the Professional Golfers Association:
NEW STREAMING “LIVE” AT WXRL.COM
• Executives who play golf make 17 percent more than those who don’t. • 54 percent of business professionals see golf as the perfect networking tool. • An estimated 90 percent of Fortune 500 CEOs play golf.
On behalf of the Ramblin’ Lou Family and our WXRL Family and Staff, we sincerely hope that you and your family are safe & well. And, when you’re ready to travel, we’re here for you. We can’t wait to get back “On The Road Again!” Check our website at wxrl.com for up-to-date information. Stay well, friends.
• Sandra Day O’Connor, Cameron Diaz, Vera Wang, Celine Dion and Condoleezza Rice are all avid golfers.
RAMBLIN’ LOU TOURS “Travel with Friends” in 2021
• Golf challenges women to go beyond their comfort zone for personal enrichment and a feeling of accomplishment and confidence. • Playing golf with someone gives you insights into his or her integrity, sportsmanship and personality. Empowering Women to Learn Golf: Lexus Teams Up With the MGA The best way to learn the game is in a supportive stress-free environment, such as a local clinic. Lexus recently hosted clinics throughout the tristate area with the Metropolitan Golf Association to help women gain the basic skills needed to get on the course. (Keep an eye out next season because they plan to host more in spring 2019.) It is important to look for clinics like the Lexus “Introduction to Golf” events that start simple and focus on basics like putting and chipping. You’ll also want an intimate clinic, so you get the one-on-one attention you need as a beginner. If a local pro will be there to speak to the group, even better! It’s great to gain inspiration from those who live and breathe the game. Golf experts such as former LPGA Tour player Tara Fleming; Liz Caron, a member of the winning 2004 U.S. Curtis Cup Team; and Kyla Basso, a highly talented amateur golfer, were present at the Lexus-hosted clinics. Among their advice: 1. Don’t let yourself be intimidated when you step onto the course with clients or colleagues—you’ll do better if you remain confident and calm.
With a little practice and hard work, you’ll be reaping the benefits of golf in no time! GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Gardeners My sweet corn, when a couple feet tall, produces 1-3 suckers off the base of the main stalk; why? Dave P. So-called “suckers” in this case are tillers. Corn tiller development is a normal part of corn physiology with variation by variety. Tillers generally indicate favorable
from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County growing conditions which may mean plants are spaced too far apart with abundant moisture and excess fertility. Recommended spacing is with rows 30 to 36 inches apart with a spacing of 8 to 12 inches between plants within a row. Adverse weather
conditions such as hail and frost that damage the growing point in the stalk in early development can also cause tiller development. There is little effect from
tillers on the corn crop, and their presence is considered neutral, although there are some reports of positive and negative results.

I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mosses from and Old Manse

CARE FOR TOOLS PROPERLY Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding.

• Black walnut tree leaves or twigs: Leaves or twigs from black walnut release substances that might prove harmful to plants. • Coal or charcoal ash: Coal or ash from charcoal, such as the ash that builds up in the bottom of charcoal grills, may contain substances that are harmful. • Dairy products: When added to compost piles, dairy products, including butter, milk, sour cream, yogurt and eggs, can be malodorous and may attract pests, including rodents and flies. • Diseased or insect-ridden plants: The diseases and insects that plague plants may survive being transferred to compost piles. When the compost is ultimately distributed, these diseases and insects might then plague other plants. • Fats, grease, lard, or oils: Fats, grease, lard or oils also may attract rodents and flies, and that might be due to the unpleasant odors such substances can produce when added to compost piles. • Meat or fish bones and scraps: Like fats, grease, lard or oils, scraps from meat and fish and fish bones can smell unpleasant, potentially attracting rodents and flies. • Pet waste: Pet waste, including soiled cat litter, may contain parasites, bacteria, germs, pathogens, and viruses that can be harmful. • Grass trimmings treated with chemical pesticides: Trimmings from grass that was treated with chemical pesticides can negate the effects of composting by killing beneficial organisms produced within compost piles or bins.

Classrooms & COVID:
Dr. Schulz Answers Back-to-School Questions BY AMANDA DUDEK
A
cross Rochester and the Finger Lakes Region, children have gone back to school. For many students this means returning to the classroom, whether as a hybrid with virtual learning or fulltime. During this unprecedented back-to-school experience, families find themselves with many questions. Providing clarity is Dr. Steven Schulz of Finger Lakes Medical Associates, Rochester Regional Health Pediatrician, and member of the New York State Finger Lakes Reopening Schools Safely Task Force. Several school protocols include “masks breaks” and circumstances during which masks are not required, leading parents to question what constitutes an “exposure” should a student at their child’s school contract COVID-19. The answer is surprisingly clear. “An exposure is close contact with someone with COVID-19,” said Dr. Schulz. “This is defined as being unmasked and within 6 feet of an infected person for longer than 15 minutes. The highest rate of transmission occurs from close contact.” “Mask breaks can be done safely with adequate distance, but best practice is for students to remain masked and socially distanced whenever possible, especially indoors,” Schulz continued, noting there is a lower risk of transmission when outdoors. Dr. Schulz and the Task Force are working with Common Ground to share and implement New York State Department of Health guidelines with all schools within a 13-county area. Although some cases are anticipated, Dr. Schulz encourages families that we are in an excellent place to be returning to school. “In the Finger Lakes Region, we only have a 1% prevalence rate,” he explained. “That means there is a 99% chance that a child’s symptoms are due to another virus that is not COVID.” However, Dr. Schulz advises parents to contact their health care provider for next steps if their child does develop symptoms which are also consistent with COVID. But how can a parent determine when their child’s symptoms are likely COVID-19 rather than simply a cold, allergies or something else? “That is the hard part,” Dr. Schulz acknowledges. “COVID in children tends to be milder with symptoms ranging from runny nose, congestion, cough, shortness of breath and sore throat to nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, fatigue and poor appetite. What parents should be most aware of are new, different, or worsening symptoms, particularly a fever.” What happens if your child gives a positive response during the school’s screening protocol or is sent home due to related symptoms? “Students who have these COVID symptoms must have an examination,” said Dr. Schulz. “The NYS Department of Health requires that the student meet four criteria to return to school: 1. Receive an evaluation by their health care provider, 2. Have a COVID-19 test with negative results, 3. Obtain a letter from the child’s primary health care provider, 4. All the child’s symptoms must have resolved.” Dr. Schulz again emphasizes that “kids are being sent home for a wide variety of symptoms, many of which are likely not COVID related.” However, he recommends isolating the child as much as possible within their household until their test results are received. During this time, adults and children over 2 years old should wear masks and wash hands frequently, and surfaces should be disinfected. “It is better to be safe than sorry to keep the virus under control,” he added. “Stay home when your child is sick and be honest when answering screening questions.” For the children who receive a positive result on their COVID-19

test, returning to school is a little more involved. “The health department will go through contact tracing and determine when it is safe for that child and others to return,” said Dr. Schulz, noting that several advances in treatment are now available. “Household members will also be quarantined and should be tested, as well.” Within those children’s schools, the local health department will take over, determine high and low risk Dr. Steven Schulz, Finger Lakes exposures, and reach out Medical Associates, Rochester Regional to individuals as necessary. Health Pediatrician, and member of the “If everyone has worn masks New York State Finger Lakes Reopening Schools Safely Task Force at all times and has been social distancing, there should be no need for a student’s class or school to have any additional testing or to be shut down because there will have been no close contact,” said Dr. Schulz. Dr. Schulz is satisfied with the opening safety plans of area schools, which had to be approved by the state, adding that every family is different with its own tolerance of risk. “Every district is offering remote classes,” he observed. “At the same time, there are lots of benefits for attending school in person such as socialization, learning requirements, food stability and a stable place to stay. The schools are taking every precaution and are helping families to determine which choice is best for them.” Meanwhile, Dr. Schulz encourages people to talk to their local healthcare provider about their ability to get a flu shot. “It is especially important this year,” he said emphatically. “COVID-19 and the flu have a lot of overlapping symptoms, and theoretically, you could be infected with both.” He cautions that outbreaks of COVID-19 combined with outbreaks of the flu could overwhelm the healthcare system, reminiscent of the strain COVID-19 and the flu put on NYC’s healthcare system earlier this year. “Typically, the flu season starts in November, so we encourage people to get theirs by the end of October.” Regarding a future COVID-19 vaccine, Dr. Schulz believes it is only a matter of time. “There is a lot of vigorous study going into this,” he stated. “Vaccination trials are taking place regionally, and there is continued diligence regarding efficacy and safety. It will be a big step and help put this pandemic behind us.” Enjoy this article? M any elements of vehicle maintenance become second nature to drivers once they have a few months of driving under their belts. Oil changes, routine checkups and periodic vehicle inspections can keep cars runn ing smoothly and safely on the road. But few drivers remember to maintain their headlights, a potentiall y dangerous oversight that can compromise the safety of drivers and their fellow motorists.

* “Want to be more organized in your home cleaning? It seems many people want to have a cleaner, more organized home but get overwhelmed when putting it into practice. Start by creating a cleaning schedule that breaks down jobs into a list incorporating tasks to be done daily, weekly and even monthly or quarterly. It takes the ‘if I can’t do everything I’ll just do nothing’ factor out of play.” -- J.M. in Pennsylvania * A bathroom squeegee can help eliminate water spots before they form on your shower doors. Hang one in your shower. * If you haven’t worn an item in six months (of its seasonality), it’s time to let it go. That’s been the Golden Rule for as long as I can remember. I was asked recently, Does it apply this year? I think now, like always, is a good time to look critically at your overall summer wardrobe, but I would add “opportunity” to the caveats. Meaning, if you haven’t worn it because you have not had an opportunity you otherwise would have had, save it. Those work clothes will be important again! -- JoAnn AUTOMOTIVE

UR STRONG I want to give a huge shout out to the many nurses I met during my stay this past month. Each and every one of you in your own way made my stay a little more bearable. From the handmade chocolate milkshake to just chatting with me, from laughing at my bad jokes to drawing funny pictures on the white board. But most of all, thanks for the care and attention given to me. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart! CAR ACCIDENT ANGEL I was in a bad car accident on Route 247 in Canandaigua on Friday, August 28th, and right after my car was hit I was
so scared and upset, but a very kind woman came to me and held me as I cried. She stayed right by side until the ambulance came. She was my angel, and I am forever grateful and blessed for her act of kindness. I did not get her name, but God bless you, and thank you so very much for being by my side. There are still kind people in this world, and she is definitely one of them! ABOVE AND BEYOND I want to recognize Alden Smith who owns Smith Solutions, our garbage service in Dansville. He is hands down the hardest working, most honest and respectful young man I know. He
goes above and beyond to serve his customers. Thank you for being outstanding in what I can imagine is a thankless job.
OUT OF SEASON
RESPONSE TO “RABBLE ROUSERS” I am so sorry if you are having difficulty opening a small business in whatever township you live in. I know that where I live, we had a beautiful hardware store set up business. It was so wonderful to have a place so close to home. They once told us what a difficult time Town Hall gave them when they wanted to open. Yet, we can have a place that brings down the neighborhood. That is fine with Town Hall, which I find odd. The hardware store unfortunately had to close its doors. How sad! I wish you well with your endeavors, but it does seem to be an upward climb for some.
someone who respects the town ordinance. Do you even know what kind of music that neighbor was playing? Do you just assume it is the kind of music you like? Such ignorance to assume all music has the same effect on everyone! If your music is loud enough to rock your neighbor’s house, you are intruding! Period. If I want free concerts, I would live next to a stadium. You were completely irresponsible to “suggest” that the original complainer move their residence in order to get some peace in their life. I suggest that you people find out who you all are, move into the same neighborhood, and play your personal outdoor concerts against each other.
My brother has 30 acres of land and has been watching a large turkey family in the fields eating grasshoppers. Something spooked them and they all flew across the road onto a certain property. This guy grabs his gun and starts shooting! My brother flipped out as he watched this. This person said he wanted a turkey for dinner after he lied about it saying the turkeys scared his horses, claiming he shot over the horses at the turkeys. My brother does not know for sure if he hit one, but if he got the hen, those babies surely won’t make it. I think these people are shooting deer, as well as rabbits and anything they can eat. What makes them special that they can shoot everything that BE GONE! is out of season? have no sense of common courtesy. I bet if I cranked music all day next to their house, they would be the first to complain! You do not get to decide what others have to listen to. Want to take a nap? Nope! Music! Want to keep the baby asleep? Nope! Music! Want to enjoy a movie? Nope! Music! You now get to have an extra soundtrack added to your show. There are laws on noise for a reason people like you! The beauty of this infraction: I get to call the cops, and you would not even hear them coming! The evidence would be deafening!

In Loving Memory Stephen Michael Ditzel September 26, 1990 - April 17, 2020
We wish we had another Christmas, To sit around the tree, There wouldn't be another place, That we would hope to be. We wish we had another birthday, Together as we sing, Forgetting all tomorrows, And the sadness they might bring. We wish we had another dinner, House warm, us safe within, Saying that we love you, Is where we'd all begin. We wish we had another summer, Exploring in the woods, We'd look at life like magic, Just the way we always should. We wish we had another trip, No matter distance, no matter time, We wouldn't calculate the costs, And what we left behind. We wish we had another day, To sit and talk with you, There wouldn't be a single thing, That we would rather do. We wish we didn't have to wish, With pain that never ends, Yet we'll be wishing every day, Until the day we meet again.
4 REASONS TO TRAVEL MORE In addition to eating healthier, exercising more and getting more sleep, many people resolve to travel more at the dawn of a new year. Travel is much more than leaving one’s home. It’s about setting habits aside, escaping comfort zones and trying something different - and doing so in a different location. In its latest World Tourism Barometer, the United Nations World Tourism Organization found that 1.184 billion tourists traveled outside their countries’ borders for at least one night in 2015. Europe, Asia, the Pacific, and the Americas all recorded around a 5 percent increase in international arrivals that year. Europe was particularly popular, perhaps hedged by a weaker euro against the American dollar and other currencies. The U.S. Travel Association says that direct spending by resident and international travelers in America averaged $2.7 billion a day. Millennials may be leading the travel-enamored pack. The United Nations estimates that 20 percent of all international tourists, or nearly 200 million travelers, are young people, and that the millennial demographic generates more than $180 billion in annual tourism revenue. The U.N. also reports that millennials are more interested than older generations in traveling abroad as much as possible. Infrequent travelers or those who have never traveled may not understand why heading to parts unknown is so appealing to so many people. The following are just a handful of reasons why travel is so enticing. 1. Engage the mind. Staying mentally active over the course of a lifetime promotes long-term health. Navigating unfamiliar places or reading a foreign language while sitting in an international country can engage the brain and get synapses firing. The Mayo Clinic reports that higher cognitive activity endows the brain with a greater ability to fend off brain pathologies, such as disease and dementias. 2. Connect with new people. Travel opens a person up to not only new experiences, but also new people. English poet John Donne penned the famous line, “No man is an island,” which underscores the importance of having friends and making new acquaintances. Research conducted by the University of Michigan found the act of talking with people in a friendly way can improve a person’s memory, suppress external and internal distractions, and encourage people to see things from another person’s perspective. It doesn’t hurt to broaden one’s social network, either.
Happy Birthday Steve! We love you!
3. Build confidence. Leaving one’s comfort zone can be a great way to bolster one’s self-esteem. Navigating cultural boundaries and overcoming those boundaries may be initially intimidating, but doing so can make a person more confident and more adaptable to change.
Love, Mom, Dad, Tina, Chris and Kids
4. Develop opinions. Until a person visits a place in person, he or she only has third-party information to form opinions. Visiting a city or country for the first time can offer a more complete perspective. Travel gives people the chance to rest, explore, meet new friends, and make lasting memories.

Cologuard Test Worth Risk of False Positive ---
by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy
MALOCCLUSIONS
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 77-year-old man in good health. At my recent annual physical exam, my physician ordered a Cologuard kit to be sent to me to screen for colorectal disease. I have never had symptoms of disease or problems with any part of my gastrointestinal tract. I had two colonoscopies at different times several years ago, the results of which were negative. When I got the kit, I read the patient guidelines and learned that the Cologuard test could result in false positives and that there is an unspecified increase in the risk of false positives for persons over the age of 75. A positive result from the test requires a follow-up colonoscopy, which is also riskier for elderly patients. Since I am in good health with no symptoms of any disease, I decided I did not want to risk a false positive result from the test, which would require a follow-up colonoscopy. Did I make the right decision? -- E.G. ANSWER: Cologuard is a brand of test that looks at DNA in stool for evidence of cancer. Certain DNA mutations are highly suggestive of cancer. In addition, Cologuard does an immunochemical test looking for blood. Because it combines these two techniques, Cologuard is more sensitive than only a test looking for blood. Compared with colonoscopy, Cologuard is about 92% sensitive in finding cancers, meaning it will miss about 8%. With improved sensitivity comes a lack of specificity, which means you could have a false positive result. The Cologuard can say that you have an abnormality when a colonoscopy would indicate normal. For 45% of people with a positive Cologuard test, no abnormalities will be found upon colonoscopy. You are right that false positives are more prevalent in older individuals. There are two reasons that I think the Cologuard is still a reasonable choice, despite the fact that it isn’t as good as colonoscopy. The first is that I continue to recommend a screening test for healthy 77-year-old men, and although colonoscopy is my first choice, a normal Cologuard test prevents a need for colonoscopy, and a false positive would lead to the same colonoscopy you would have gotten anyway (although there probably is more anxiety after a false positive test). The second is that a person with an abnormal Cologuard and a normal colonoscopy may be at risk for an abnormality that wasn’t found on colonoscopy. A study looking at people in this category found a 25% risk of abnormality on follow-up colonoscopy, if the Cologuard was abnormal again one to two years later. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I had lung surgery in 2014. The scar is still red and sore. I got no instructions on how to deal with it. Do you have any suggestions? -- J.S.B. ANSWER: That’s a very long time for the scar to still be red and sore, and I would encourage you to have the surgeon or your regular doctor take a look. For people with redness and soreness in a scar shortly after surgery, I recommend silicone gel (there are many available), as it has been shown to be effective. Many people recommend vitamin E oil, but well-done studies have shown this does not help and may harm the cosmetic appearance. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Malocclusions of the teeth refers to several types of common dental issues involving the alignment of teeth and bite. A malocclusion is usually an inherited condition, but it can also be caused by habits including poor dental care, thumb sucking, and prolonged bottle feeding. One type of malocclusion is overcrowding, which causes teeth to grow in crookedly and overlap one another. Sometimes too much space exists between teeth, resulting in problems with chewing, bad breath, and bleeding gums. Over, under, and open bites also fall under the malocclusion umbrella. Impacted teeth (teeth that are unable to grow from the gum properly) and missing teeth are also sometimes referred to as malocclusions.
Don’t let dental abnormalities keep you from smiling, chewing, talking, and just generally enjoying life. There are many strategies available today to solve the problems caused by less than lovely teeth. At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, we’ll be happy to discuss which ones would be best for your circumstances. For compassionate dental care, including cosmetic dentistry, complete restorations, and regular cleanings, our primary goal is to treat our patients with the best, most up-todate, gentle dentistry possible. We’re located at 6 Batavia City Centre, and you can reach us at 585.343.4246 P.S. Untreated malocclusions can affect one’s oral and digestive health.

HOW TO ENCOURAGE KIDS TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR TEETH Parents of young children know that getting kids to brush their teeth can sometimes feel like pulling teeth. Kids have a long history of disliking dental care, which can frustrate parents who know the importance and long-lasting benefits of proper dental hygiene. While many youngsters may never excitedly run to the bathroom to brush their teeth, parents can try various approaches to get kids to embrace proper dental care. Start early. Parents should not hesitate to begin cleaning kids’ teeth once the first tooth appears. The earlier dental care is part of a child’s routine, the more likely he or she is to accept it as part of everyday life. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends using a softbristled brush with a small head. Ideally, use a toothbrush designed for infants, brushing teeth once per day at bedtime. The AAPD advises taking kids to visit a pediatric dentist when the first tooth appears, or no later than the child’s first birthday. Make it a group effort. Young children love to imitate their parents’ actions and behaviors, and moms and dads can use that adoration to their advantage when trying to get kids to brush their teeth. Brush teeth together as a family, making it seem like an enjoyable twice-daily activity. Get down on kids’ level and show them how to brush. If kids are resistant, engage them in conversation while brushing so they don’t even realize they’re cleaning away. Involve kids in choosing their dental care products. While parents should be mindful of the type of toothbrush their children use, always sticking with products recommended by their child’s pediatric dentist, let youngsters choose their toothbrush and toothpaste. Kids might prefer a particular flavor of toothpaste, and a colorful toothbrush with a favorite film or television character might make kids more enthusiastic and less fussy about brushing. Compliment kids after positive dental appointments. When pediatric dentist appointments go well, compliment children and express your pride in them for taking dental hygiene as seriously as they do.

DISCOUNTS AVAILABLE TO THE OVER 50 CROWD: Movie tickets: The cost of going to the movies has skyrocketed in recent years, as today’s theaters now offer an array of amenities and, thanks to bigger screens and better technology, a better viewing experience than the theaters the over-50 crowd grew up visiting. While film lovers may need to wait until they turn 60 to cash in on discount movie tickets, many chain movie theaters offer discounted tickets to older patrons.

AT-HOME NUTRITION AND COOKING WITH KIDS RECIPES FOR FUN: If you’re preparing a meal, it could be a good time to teach children of reading age how to review a recipe. Evaluating ingredients to learn how food transforms from raw to cooked or how a dish is created can help kids learn kitchen skills. FOOD GROUPS FOCUS: Get kids involved in making dinner by setting a rule that each food group must be represented. Give them a warmup activity by asking which food groups are found in family favorites like chicken soup, lasagna or meatloaf. Asking kids to guess which ingredients are used in these dishes and identifying which food group each ingredient belongs to can help them understand dietary balance.

According to the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School, failure to get enough sleep, even for just one night, can impair a person’s ability to function by affecting his or her ability to focus and access high-level cognitive functions. A panel of experts from sleep, anatomy and physiology, as well as pediatrics, neurology, gerontology and gynecology convened by the National Sleep Foundation in 2015 recommended adults between the ages of 26 and 64 get between seven and nine hours of sleep per night.
