Nothing speaks comfort like fall, and nothing speaks fall like wrapping our hands around a warm beverage. As the temperature drops and days become shorter, lay cozily on the couch, turn on the T.V., and let the powerful scent of apple, nutmeg, and cinnamon fill your home — it’s time to celebrate National Hot Mulled Cider Day. While most are acquainted with mulled ciders, on September 30 we bump it up a notch and mull it with spices, cinnamon, cloves, orange peels, and nutmeg to celebrate the arrival of fall.
Fall décor
Since it’s smelling like fall it needs to look like fall!
As the cider brews in the kitchen, replace the summer décor with fall pumpkins, gourds and fall scented candles.

Thank you to my “garbage plate” angel
I am a female senior citizen with poor hand movement due to arthritis. My foolish self thought I could handle carrying my huge garbage plate takeout container from the restaurant to my car. However I was not able to park in a handicapped spot and so on the way to my further away space, I dropped the whole container! Luckily not much fell out and a very kind gentleman was in the parking lot to help me pick it up. He also noted that my plate hadn’t come with diced raw onion. “That’s integral to a plate,” he said. So true! Luckily he had some diced onion leftover from his plate he donated to mine. I deeply enjoyed this meal. Thanks to that parking lot angel and I will pay it forward!
Stopped Traffic!
Thank you to everyone who stopped their cars on Veteran’s Memorial and to everyone who helped me catch my dog after he slipped his harness! I cannot express how relieved I am that he is safe and sound, and the recipient of a new, better fitting harness!
Inconsiderate dog owners
Please, dog owners (not all by any means, but many of you), leash your dogs! Just because you love your dog like a child doesn’t mean that I do. We are fortunate enough to have many terrific walking and hiking trails in the area. Nothing ruins a morning jog or an evening stroll like an untrained dog barreling towards you as the owner says “don’t worry, he’s friendly.” Guess what? I don’t care! It is about time for legal enforcement of the signs stating the fines for unleashed dogs!
Local elections
Am I the only one who’s already sick of the commercials, flyers, and in person discussions of anyone who spends more time attacking their opponents and less time saying what they will do for us?
Overuse of perfume/cologne
Attention aids, nurses, people in the medical field, home health aids or visitors to the hospitals, senior apartments or nursing homes. Overuse of perfume/ cologne that lingers in the hallways makes many elderly people ill. Please consider the necessity of having to wear it in these places. It affects people with asthma, COPD, and many other illnesses. Respect their living space. It would be so much appreciated.

KITCHEN DESIGN WITH HEALTH AND ERGONOMICS IN MIND
(NAPSI)—Whether you’re among the 50 million Americans over 65 (90 percent of whom hope to continue to age at home), the 60 percent of families with children at home, have other ability issues or safety concerns or think you could someday, incorporating ergonomic elements that promote a seamless experience in the kitchen can make it a more comfortable place for everyone for many years to come.
Smart Sinks Given the amount of time spent in front of the sink, selecting one that considers your lifestyle and how you cook should be a priority. Details such as the durability and hygienic qualities of a sink’s material along with its style and size can impact efficiency and comfort.
For example, the latest sink from BLANCO, a manufacturer of finely crafted sinks, is designed to enhance workflow and accommodate all users. A first of its kind, the IKON® 33” Apron 1 3/4 Bowl with Low Divide sink is made with the brand’s exclusive SILGRANIT granite composite material. Easy to clean and scratch resistant, patented SILGRANIT material is a repellent, nonporous surface that eliminates the need to use harsh chemicals when cleaning.
The IKON sink also has a convenient low divide that sits just 5 1/2” from the sink bottom, making it easier to handle large pots and baking sheets while still dividing the sink into cleaning and prepping bowls. The apron front or farmhouse design, minimizes the need to lean over as much and so helps reduce strain.
Optional accessories further enhance comfort and workflow. A floating grid provides an extra level within the sink so handling hot and heavy pots can be safer and easier. A Floating Cutting Board that fits right on top of the sink instantly creates another workspace beyond the countertop.
Faucets Semi-professional and pull-down faucet models help make clean-up more efficient with their easy-to-maneuver design and powerful dual spray features. To make washing hands, food and dishes easier, consider a faucet with sensor technology such as the BLANCO SOLENTA™ Senso Semi-Professional Kitchen Faucet that lets you turn on the water with a wave of your hand. You don’t have to touch the faucet with your hands to get them clean—or if they’re full.
Other ways to enhance the ergonomics in your kitchen include:
• Use drawers instead of cabinets for storage so there’s less reaching
• Install different countertop heights to accommodate various users
• Raise the height of the dishwasher and oven if you can
• Select nonporous counter materials like quartz that are easy to keep clean
• Use LED lights for more brightness from less energy and that are cool to the touch
• Consider an easy-to-clean induction cooking surface—it can reduce energy costs, too

How to Navigate Potential Supply Shortages this Holiday Season
• Shop Local. By mid-spring 2022, congestion at ports on the west coast of the United States had lessened significantly. But the same could not be said for ports on the east coast. Many big box retailers rely on imports to fill their shelves, and that could make it hard for such sellers to deliver items in time for the holiday season. Shopping local and buying items directly off the shelf can ensure no one is given an IOU this holiday season.
• Give Gi Cards. If shipping estimates make it unlikely that gi s will arrive on time for the holiday season, pivot to gi cards. Put the amount of money you would have spent on the item on the card instead.
• Ship Directly to Recipients. It might not offer the same heartwarming charm as handing a loved one a gi in person, but shipping gi s directly to their recipients increases the likelihood that the person will receive the gi by Chanukah or Christmas morning. Many online retailers now offer wrapping at additional cost, and shoppers can splurge and have directly shipped gi s wrapped to add a more traditional feel to gi -giving.
• Give Homemade Gi s. Homemade gi s, whether it’s baked goods or cra s, don’t need to be shipped, so there’s no way such items will spend the holiday season sitting on a ship in a congested port. If you choose to make cra s, decide early what you want create so you can secure all of the necessary supplies in plenty of time to deliver the items during Chanukah or on Christmas morning.

Cash For Trees
DID YOU KNOW?
Using reclaimed timber when building or renovating a home benefits the environment in various ways. According to GreenBusinessWatch. org, building and renovating with reclaimed timber helps to preserve forests by greatly reducing the need to cut down trees. In addition, when using reclaimed timber to build or renovate a home, contractors and homeowners tend to use locally sourced reclaimed wood, reducing the need to transport wood from afar to complete the projects. That reduced reliance on transportation reduces fuel consumption and air pollution. Processing reclaimed timber is often less taxing on the environment than processing virgin wood. However, reclaimed timber may provide more than just environmental benefits. Virgin timber typically comes from commercially grown trees that are not always afforded enough time to reach full maturity. Timber that is reclaimed from old buildings and vessels may very well have reached full maturity before it was cut down to use as building material. Reclaimed timber that grew to full maturity is likely stronger than virgin wood taken from commercially grown trees that were not given enough time to mature. Reclaimed timber also may prove more durable than virgin wood because the former has already dried out after years of contracting and expanding, making it less likely to warp and split than virgin wood that has yet to endure such exposure.
HOW TO BUILD YOUR HOME BAR
Fill it with spirits
No bar is complete without alcohol and mixers. Homeowners can buy the types of spirits they love and complete their bars with the basics for mixing. When stocking a bar, keep in mind that everything does not have to be top-shelf. Vodka, gin, tequila, rum, and whiskey are some of the more popular spirits. Simple syrup, fresh fruit, club soda, cola, and bitters are examples of versatile mixers.
Entertaining guru Martha Stewart says to have enough supplies on hand for guests. Expect each person to have three drinks (requiring three glasses), use a pound of ice, and three cocktail napkins per two-hour party. Don’t forget to also have nonalcoholic items on hand for those who don’t imbibe.

Q&A Master Gardeners with the
Preserving Native Bulbs
New times bring new technological devices, new generations, new lifestyles, and gardening is not the exception. We crave the new and differentandthereforebetter.Really?
This recalls many gardeners attracted to the new hybrids: the latest color, size, and number of blooms in different vegetables, flowers, and fruits.
Personally, I admire the heirlooms, those plants that were grown in our gardens for centuries, loved and appreciated, and passed down through the generations. So, here it
is, late September, the time to plant those charming, trouble-free, longlasting, and self-proliferating spring bulbs. Many of them have been with usforaverylongtime, suchas:
•OrnithogalumUmbellatum, known toallastheStarofBethlehem, iseasy to grow, and sometimes strays, in gardenssince1593!
•Scillasiberica,orSiberiansquill,as its name implies, survives a negative 40 degrees Farenheight and carpets dapple shade in a flush of blue in AprilthroughMay.
• Another blue charmer, Chionodoxa, known as Glory of the Snow, arrived 100 years later in 1788.
• Muscari or grape hyacinths showeduparoundthesametime.
• Mount Hood daffodil, 16-18 inches high, blooms pale-yellow andfadestoivory.
Enjoy these old-timers and keep historyalive!

CAN ALKALINE IONIZED WATER IMPROVE DENTAL HEALTH?
Bottled water has a neutral pH of 7.0, while tap water typically has a pH between 6.5 and 9.0. Acidic water with a pH below 7.0 can pose a risk to your teeth because acids interact with bacteria in your mouth to produce plaque and erode enamel. Alkaline water, on the other hand, with a pH above 7.0 can benefit teeth. Alkaline ionized water contains ions produced by electrolysis. It has a higher pH (alkalinity) than bottled water and some tap water, usually between 8.0 and 9.0. Alkaline water doesn’t just limit plaque and enamel erosion, it helps prevent cavities too. Alkaline minerals found in water (like calcium, magnesium, potassium, and iron) additionally benefit dental health by building strong teeth.
At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, we firmly believe that education and
preventive care are key to optimal dental health as well as overall health. That’s why we are focused on a healthy smile as well as a healthy body for all our patients. To achieve these goals, we conduct thorough exams, review medical histories, and provide instruction on diet and proper brushing and flossing techniques. If you are as concerned as we are about healthy teeth and gums, call our office today for an appointment for comprehensive dental care. Located at 6 Batavia City Centre, you can reach us at 585.343.4246
P.S. Some scientists believe that drinking alkaline ionized water helps neutralize the acid-base imbalance in our bodies that often results from our modern diet.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

How to Best Utilize Compression Stockings
DEAR DR. ROACH: Would you please address how to use compression socks? I sit most of the day, so wearing the socks helps my legs to feel less heavy and tired by the end of the day. Are there people who should not wear them? And what about wearing them during exercise?
-- C.S.
ANSWER: Compression stockings are most commonly used in people with chronic venous insufficiency, a common condition in middle-aged to older people. The major symptom is swelling in the feet and lower legs. The swelling is usually minimal or gone in the morning and gets worse during the day, especially with prolonged standing and even sitting.
The underlying problem is that the veins, which carry blood from the legs back to the heart, get leaky over decades, and the fluid accumulates in the legs under the force of gravity. Your doctor can prescribe the right size, length and strength of stocking based on your personal condition. The fact that you feel better with compression stockings suggests that you might have venous insufficiency, but it’s still a good idea to ask your doctor about them. Compression stockings are pretty safe, but should not be worn by people with serious reduction in arterial blood flow to the legs.
Arterial disease is completely different from venous insufficiency. It’s caused by blockages in the arteries that carry blood from the heart to the legs. An expert, such as a vascular surgeon, is an appropriate consultant for a person with arterial insufficiency before they consider using compression stockings.
Unless you have moderate to severe arterial disease (in which case you should check with your doctor if you aren’t sure), there is no harm from wearing compression stockings during exercise. There may even be some benefit. Compression stockings should not be worn by those with an acute clot in a major leg vein (a deep venous thrombosis). Once the clot is stabilized for a few days with medication, compression stockings can help treat and even prevent swelling in the affected leg.
People with moderate to severe heart failure should exercise care before using compression stockings, which put the leaked-out fluid back into the circulation and can worsen heart failure. Again, this is an issue to discuss with your regular doctor or cardiologist prior to using compression stockings on your own.
Finally, severe venous insufficiency can cause breakdown in the skin. A person with ulcers or open wounds, or with any kind of acute infection, should be evaluated and treated prior to using compression stockings. A wound care nurse is an ideal consultant in this case.

PAW’S CORNER
Cats get allergies too!
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My cat, Tushy, sneezes several times a day, and her eyes water almost nonstop. is has been happening for a couple of weeks. She didn’t seem to have this issue before. My local veterinarian’s office is booked up for another two months, so I’m not sure what I can do in the meantime. Can you help? --
Harriet G., Roanoke, Virginia
DEAR HARRIET: It sounds like your cat is suffering from an allergy to something in her environment. at could be airborne irritants like pollen, dust or molds. Or, it could be a reaction to something in her food.
You can try to figure out what’s causing her reaction in a couple of ways. First, dust and clean your home thoroughly, and consider adding an air purifier with a HEPA filter in the room that Tushy spends the most time in. Next, try a different brand of pet food for a couple of weeks to see if that makes any difference. Some cats are sensitive to certain ingredients in pet foods, and because those ingredients vary from brand to brand, it’s difficult to figure out which one is causing the allergy.
When Tushy is able to see the veterinarian, bring along your notes about her symptoms and what effect, if any, the environmental and dietary changes above had on improving her condition. e vet can offer additional treatment and support, such as adding essential fatty acids to her diet or prescribing a steroid to help with her symptoms.
In the meantime, monitor Tushy’s symptoms closely. If they suddenly get much worse, or if she becomes lethargic, vomits frequently or shows other signs of serious illness, take her to an emergency vet immediately.

Clarkson Native Henry R. Selden Left a Strong Legacy Beyond the Susan B Anthony Trial
BY BILL ANDREWS, BROCKPORT TOWN HISTORIAN
Henry R. Selden was probably the Town of Clarkson’s most notable resident. He was, first and foremost, a lawyer, in fact, the most distinguished lawyer in western New York. His obituary in the Albany Law Journal said, “He will always be ranked among the leading lawyers of our State.” is led quite naturally to a political career, where Selden was a leader and had some success. In 1830, he founded the first Jacksonian political party in western New York. In 1854, he helped found the Republican Party in New York State. In 1856, Selden ran for lieutenant governor, and he and John King (governor) were the first Republicans elected to statewide offices in the country.
As lieutenant governor, Selden was atop the executive branch of New York State government. He was appointed Chief Judge of the New York State Court of Appeals, its highest judicial office. And, for one term, he was the top leader in the New York State Assembly.
In 1860, Selden was a delegate to the Republican presidential nominating convention in Chicago and was Lincoln’s first choice for running mate. He declined, however, because of his fragile health.
Selden’s political career included a role in the democratization of New York’s constitution. In 1843, he was on the eight-member executive committee of the New York State Constitutional Reform Association that campaigned successfully for a constitutional convention to democratize the 1821 constitution. Its proposal was adopted by popular referendum in 1846. As a result, moststatewideexecutive offices and most judgeships became elective, rather than appointive.
Besides his legal and political careers, Selden was heavily involved in the early development of the telegraph industry. He and his partner, Henry O’Reilly, developed an 8,000-mile telegraph network, the largest in the world at the time. Also, Selden was the first president of the telegraph company that evolved into the Western Union Telegraph Co. and served as its chief counsel.
Selden is best known for having been Susan B. Anthony’s attorneywhenshewastriedforvotinginthe1872election.Anthony selected him to represent her because of his stellar reputation, saying, “I know I can win. I have Judge Selden as a lawyer.”
Selden’s courtroom performance was truly extraordinary. He spoke for three hours, showing that women already had the right to vote. His performance was the more remarkable because he did so with an aluminum tube in his throat because his larynx was paralyzed.
He presented the case from every conceivable angle. He invoked asauthoritiestheDeclarationofIndependence,WilliamBlackstone, John Locke, William Godwin, Chief Justice John Jay, and Abraham Lincoln. He cited eleven provisions in the Federal Constitution that refer to “persons,” or “citizens,” without distinction by sex. He noted that the 14th amendment declares that “all person born or naturalized in the United States,” are citizens and forbids states to “enact any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States, making no distinction by sex. He cited Supreme Court findings by six justices. It was arguably one of the most comprehensive and effective arguments to show that women were entitled to the suffrage already in 1872.
His effort was in vain. Judge Ward Hunt had decided the case before the trial began. He refused to let Anthony testify, or call witnesses, refused to refer the case to the jury or allow Selden to question the jury, and denied his motion for a new trial. He ruled that the only facts in the case were that Anthony was a woman, that she had voted, and that New York State law restricted suffrage to men.
Hunt’s rude dismissal of Selden is the more remarkable because they were cousins. Hunt’s mother was a Selden. Also, Selden and Hunt had worked together several times and Selden had signed a letter recommending Hunt for appointment to the United States Supreme Court to which he had just been named.
If Selden had done nothing else worthy of note, his performance in the Anthony trial earned him a place in American history.

DIFFERENT GENERATIONS CAN LEARN AND BENEFIT FROM ONE ANOTHER
Finding renewed vigor: Senior living and active lifestyle communities provide invaluable care and amenities for seniors. While being around like-minded individuals can be handy, it’s also limiting. Seniors who continue to age in place in mixed-age communities can extract joy from watching youthful children and young adults growing up, playing and socializing. Being around multiple generations also can spark interesting conversation, and all parties involved can learn something from one another.

* While filming “Jailhouse Rock” in 1957, Elvis Presley inhaled his tooth cap as he slid down a pole in the opening dance number. It lodged in his lung and required surgical removal, but aside from a little hoarseness for a few days, the King made a fairly easy recovery.
* The popular kids’ game “Operation” was invented by John Spinello, a sophomore at the University of Illinois in 1962, as part of a class assignment. Sadly, he only made $500 off the game after selling the prototype.
* By the way, in case you’ve ever wondered, the “patient” in “Operation” is named Cavity Sam.

STRANGE BUT TRUE
By Lucie Winborne
* Had Georgie Fletcher of Australia never signed on to play the mobile game “Words With Friends,” her husband, Simon, might be dead. Georgie struck up a friendship via the game’s chat feature with frequent opponent Beth Legler from Missouri. One day, Georgie told Beth that Simon hadn’t been feeling well. Beth relayed his symptoms to her husband Larry, a doctor, who insisted that the Fletchers go to the hospital immediately. A 99% blockage was discovered near his heart, which, left untreated, would have certainly been fatal.

WHAT OTHERS ARE DOING, HOW YOU CAN HELP (NAPSI)—The
global pandemic brought home to many people just how interconnected the world has become. This is true about the need to protect the environment,as well.
According to the National Institutes of Health, the way to preserve human health is by maintaining the environment because polluted air, water and land encourages such sicknesses as asthma and lead poisoning, while global warming fosters the spread of disease.
Fortunately, throughout the country, efforts large and small are helping to resolve this.
What’s Being Done
For example, one major American corporation with a long, proud history of environmental sustainability and a strong track record of action and success has raised the bar on its environmental commitments and accelerated the progress of short- and long-term goals that meet or exceed environmental regulations. As Marc Bitzer,Chairman and CEO of Whirlpool Corporation put it. “As we continue to navigate the impact of COVID-19, the healthandsafetyof ouremployeesand communities remain our priority. We strongly believe that our sustainability efforts are as important now as ever. These efforts are guided by a clear mission to earn trust and create demand while in constant pursuit of improving life at home.” To that end, the company has:
• Reduced its absolute plant emissions by 18% by investing in efficiency and renewable energy;
• Achieved zero waste to landfill in eight plants across three regions;
• Accomplished a global waste-torecycling rate of 96%; and
• Developed an innovative solution to reuse water from an existing chiller that saves 31 million gallons of water each year.
What You Can Do
For your part, you can help the environment these four ways:
1.Get your car a tune-up. Properly maintained vehicles get better gas mileage and emit fewer pollutants.
2.Plant a tree. Trees absorb carbon dioxide,a greenhouse gas.
3.Run the dishwasher and clothes washer only when you have full loads.
4.Don’t let the water run while you shave or brush your teeth.

SMART WAYS TO SAVE FOR YOUR FUTURE
(NAPSI)—According to the Federal Reserve Board, four in 10 adults, if faced with an unexpected expense of $400, would either not be able to cover it or would cover it by selling something or borrowing money. If you’re ever among them, or the 78 percent of American workers who live paycheck to paycheck, you can assist yourself.Itcanpaytoconsiderthesesix hints that can help you save:
1. Know your numbers. Keep track of where you spend your money. Include groceries, gas, utilities, entertainment, housing and debts.
2. Make tough choices. Distinguish between things you need (utilities, debt paymentsandrent)andthingsyouwant (vacations, eating out). Subtract what youhavetospendon“needs”fromyour monthly income to determine what you haveleftfor“wants.”
3. Pay yourself first. Have a percentage of each paycheck routed automatically into your savings account.Saving needs tobeapriority—considerita“need.”
4. Expect the unexpected. No matter how well you budget, life may throw the unexpected at you.
Genesee Community College has an opening for a CSTEP
5. Keep your stuff in shape. Similarly, keeping major appliances and vehicles in good condition can help you save.
Specialist. is position will be responsible for the administration of direct services to GCC Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program students. e incumbent will be instrumental in the development of academic success with students, and the CSTEP Director to meet programmatic requirements and deadlines. Successful candidates must possess a demonstrated ability to develop, implement, and assess strategic initiatives, while possessing strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. CSTEP is seeking individuals who can advise and mentor all members of our diverse student body. GCC is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer, committed to fostering diversity in its faculty, staff, and student body, and strongly encourages applications from the entire spectrum of a diverse community.
6. Comparison shop for financial products. Take the time to compare insurance policies, bank accounts, savings accounts and credit cards. For instance, there’s the new Unlimited Cash Back Bank Account, by Green Dot Bank. With this account, Green Dot pays its cardholders a 3 percent cash back bonus when they make online or in-app purchases. People spend lots of money online at various websites and buythroughapps, suchasridesharing, video streaming and meal delivery services, so getting an additional 3 percent cash back on the things you normally buy anyhow can add up.
What’s more, you can earn 3 percent annual interest when you save your money in the Green Dot Bank HighYield Savings Account (Member FDIC)—higher than what many banks pay in annual interest. It’s free with the app and the interest earned is automatically added to your annual Cash Back Bonus amount.

DID YOU KNOW?
Brief breaks during the work day can dramatically improve one’s ability to focus on a task. A 2011 study published in the journal Cognition found that brief mental breaks can improve focus on a prolonged task. The study’s authors tested participants’ ability to focus on a repetitive computerized task for 50 minutes under various conditions. The control group performed the task without breaks or diversions. The switch group and non-switch group memorized four digits before performing the task and were directed to respond if they saw one of the digits on the screen while performing the task. The switch group was the only group to be presented with the digits twice during the experiment, and both groups were tested on their memory of the digits at the end of the task. Most participants’ performance declined considerably over the course of the 50-minute task. However, the performance of those in the switch group did not decline at all, as the two brief breaks to respond to the digits allowed them to maintain their focus throughout the experiment. The researchers behind the study concluded that the switch group’s performance was steady because the brain is built to detect and respond to change, and its performance will actually suffer if it must maintain prolonged attention on a single task without taking a break. Professionals with a lot on their plates may see their performance improve by taking frequent mental breaks throughout the workday.

While pregnancy is a natural occurrence and one female bodies can accommodate, in some instances, work requirements may threaten the safety or the health of the fetus. Therefore, employers are under a duty to accommodate female workers who may need to modify their duties due to their pregnancies. This can be a collaborative discussion, with both the employer and employee coming to a solution that works best for them. It is the employer’s responsibility to accommodate pregnant employees by removing barriers that may limit those employees’ ability to do their jobs. Each instance should be looked at individually.
