Steve’s Styles Owner Retires as his Legacy Continues BY AMANDA DUDEK
I
f you have lived in the Batavia area, you have almost certainly stopped into Steve’s Styles for a haircut. Located on East Main Street in the heart of Batavia, Steve’s Styles has set the city’s hair styling standard for the past 20 years. On September 1st, owner Steve Barnett officially retired, leaving the beloved salon in the hands of long-time stylist and friend, Karen Tauscher. “I entered the hair styling industry as one of the franchise owners of Batavia’s Fantastic Sam’s in 1984,” Steve recalled. For nearly 20 years, he continued on with the company, gaining sole ownership of the Batavia franchise in 1992. In 2001, Steve made the bold decision to step out on his own, opening Steve’s Styles in East Town Plaza. “It changed everything, and things have been running smoothly ever since,” he said. Many of the stylists he employed came with him. Today, Steve’s Styles employs around 16 stylists. “Many of the stylists here have worked with me for 20 years or nearly that,” Steve said. “I will miss them very much.” “I’ve learned women are very strong and resilient,” he continued, praising his stylists. “I believe if you look for the best in people, it brings out their best. These women shine every day and work hard. In these trying times, going through the pandemic ordeal and keeping our heads above water, they are the ones who really dug in and did the hard work, pushing our already clean environment to another level.” When asked what it was he loved about the industry he dedicated himself to for 36 years, Steve didn’t hesitate. “The people,” he said. “It’s the people that make a huge difference, and the customers we have had have been so nice. Hair is so personal. People sit in that chair, and they just talk. They can come in down and out or not feeling well, and they just start feeling better. They just do. The community has been so supportive all these years, and I am going to miss all our customers.” Although he will miss his stylists and customers very much, Steve is confident he is leaving them in good hands. Karen Tauscher, who has worked with Steve for the last 30 years, and her husband Jeff took ownership of the salon on September 1st. While Steve will remain available to offer whatever transitional support is needed, he is certain his legacy will continue. “I approached Karen about purchasing Steve’s Styles earlier this year,” Steve explained. “I had been considering retirement for a while, and it was time. Karen has a lot of experience and knows the way we do business. I believe she and her husband, Jeff, will move the salon forward and grow it even more. The beauty industry is constantly changing; even seniors are putting colors in their hair now. Karen is ready to take that all on, keeping Steve’s Styles at Sometimes you forget the forefront of hair design and the needs because they coloring techniques.” Karen is ready to enter this aren’t so visible. new chapter of her journey - Helen Serafine with Steve’s Styles, although that wasn’t her initial reaction. “I was shocked when he asked me,” she recalled. “I thought he would be here forever! My husband and I discussed it, and I thought, ‘Let’s try it!’” Reflecting back on working with Steve, Karen has nothing but praise for her friend and now former boss. “I enjoyed working with him,” she said. “He was always about family first. In fact, we have had four generations of one family coming here!” When Karen’s mother was tragically diagnosed with cancer in 2005 and she sadly passed away in 2018, Steve made certain Karen had the flexibility she needed. “He always worked around it,” Karen said. “He understood when things happened. Steve will always be a part of this place, and we will continue to do the great things he has done.” Karen does have additions in mind, as well. “We are always learning from each other, taking new classes, picking up new skills. That is what makes it fun,” she explains. “I’d like to bring in some different services, and we will be updating our systems, too. We have a barber starting on

September 4th, and we plan to have an esthetician joining us for things like eyebrow and eyelash services. I also hope to add some new products such as a vegan line which is in demand.” As these exciting changes unfold, Karen assures customers that the service they know and love will continue. “We are still the same salon. We are the same group of girls the community has supported for so many years. We are still all about our customers and taking good care of them.”
Karen also thanked everyone for their support and well wishes both for Steve in his retirement and for her in her new position. As for Steve, while he will miss getting kids ready for school and the upcoming holidays—two of his favorite times of year—he will keep busy working with his son. “I will miss the wonderful people who came through our doors each and every week,” he said. “It has been such a pleasure just to be a part of this wonderful and supportive community!”

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Use club soda on a damp rag to wipe down your stainless-steel sink. It will help bring back the shine. * Fresh versus frozen in the seafood aisle: Unless you’re at the docks, most seafood in the grocer’s fresh fish case is thawed from frozen. Always ask. It’s much cheaper to buy frozen and thaw it yourself.

* “My mother swears by wrapping her feet in a vinegarsoaked rag once a week to soften calluses. She does this before her bath, and uses a pumice stone to rid her heels of hardened spots on the skin. It seems to work for her, so I thought I would pass it on!” -- C.D. in Colorado * “If you need to keep your 1-year-old corralled in the bath, try using a laundry basket. The water flows in, but she has only so much room to roam. And it lessens the odds she could slip away from you to the other side of the tub. Always stay with baby from the first drop to the last!” -- W.H. in Texas * To distinguish all the cords plugged into a power strip, write the appliance name (TV, DVD, speakers, etc.) on a plastic bread tab, and attach it to the cord at the plug. A quick look at the power strip, and you can unplug any appliance without having to follow the cord through the jungle behind your entertainment center!

DINING OUT WITH INFANTS New parents often need a respite from the near-constant demands of infants. Dining out can be one of those breaks. When a babysitter is unavailable or if you’re not yet comfortable leaving a little one with someone else, bringing baby along may be possible. First, find a family-friendly restaurant or try an establishment that has outdoor seating where you can quickly distance yourself from other diners if need be. Time dining out around the baby’s feeding and sleeping schedule. Babies sated by a recent feeding and a relaxing car ride may be more inclined to sleep through your restaurant meal. Just in case, pack an extra bottle or prepare to breastfeed to keep your baby happy.
No longer serving patio dinners for the summer. Our main dining room will re-open for dinners on October 15th. Our snack bar and bar remain open daily to everyone, along with golf and lunch.

Great neighbors! I would like to thank my neighbors for mowing my “lawn,” lending me your weed trimmer, and always being willing to offer a kind word and a helping hand. Also special thanks to one of our other neighbors for helping us paint our ceilings and stairs and for helping us catch our puppy when she got loose. We are so blessed to have moved to such a caring neighborhood! - Amanda D. Woodward Memorial Library Since road construction has been going on in front of the Woodward Memorial library, some patrons have been having a hard time returning & getting books, movies ect... The librarians now come down to the school 6 times a week for pick ups & drop offs which is greatly appreciated! I would like to give a shout out to Trish for taking the time to pick out some wonderful books for myself and my husband to read! All the ladies who work there are so helpful, especially when it comes to using the computer, faxing, ect... We are very thankful for their patience! Just wanted to thank you all for the great job that you do! - The Prince Family
Bad drivers I just don't understand why people driving on [local road] going towards [local road], have to pass you on the right when you are going around 65. They get in front of you to turn and then go slow, as if taunting you. Does it make you feel like a big man, Mr. Gray Toyota SUV? Seriously, what was your problem because I beat you at the light? Get a life!
Best wishes! Congrats to Steve at Steve’s Styles on his retirement! You certainly deserve it. Karen, I’m so excited for your new journey! - Christine W.
Wake up and hear the music Hard of hearing or very near is all I can figure for the "sound engineers" at concerts these days. Just attended a [local] concert the other evening, and thanks to the droning bass and percussion, I could not hear a word (lyric). So sad the money that is spent and the lack of enjoyment for these overpriced concerts, especially now that we can attend them in person! There is no need to feel the music as the sound people seem to insist upon.
Thank you! A special thank you to all our military families for the sacrifices you make for our country every day. It shouldn’t take tragedies like Afghanistan to bring it to our attention. Every day, for every contribution, we should convey how much your service is appreciated!

Alkaline Diet May Help Boost Cancer Treatment

Safeguard yourself from summertime ailments and accidents Lawn and garden injuries: Lawn and garden injuries may not be common, but men, women and children should exercise caution when using lawn and garden equipment. Wear protective shoes and gloves and safety goggles. Remember to turn off any motorized tools before attempting to repair or unclog the blades.
We Care About
Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy
PROACTIVE DENTAL CARE CAN PREVENT OTHER HEALTH ISSUES Proactive dental care can reduce cavities, decay, and infection. A dentist’s primary goal is preventing dental issues rather than treating them. Patients who are focused on proper dental hygiene and oral care can avert many destructive conditions and eliminate the need for future costly and possibly painful treatments. The goal of preventive dentistry is to enable patients to retain their natural teeth in their best condition. Like any part of the body, teeth require proper care to maintain health. Tooth neglect can aggravate dental issues to the point where they become problematic, painful, and expensive. By practicing preventative dental care, patients can significantly decrease the risk of infection and prevent plaque build-up, staining, and bone damage.
It is essential to take the necessary steps to prevent both tooth decay and periodontal disease in order to maintain good dental hygiene and a healthy smile. This includes a healthy diet, conscientious home care with brushing and flossing, and periodic professional cleanings and exams. Research repeatedly demonstrates that people with better dental health live longer, stay healthier longer, and enjoy a better life. If you’d like to maximize your oral health, thereby enhancing every day of your life, why not call us, 585.343.4246, for an appointment? BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL is located at 6 Batavia City Centre.

the alkaline diet? I have several friends who have battled cancer, and they have adopted alkaline diets as adjuncts to their cancer treatments. Do alkaline diets assist in the treatment and prevention of cancers, or is it just another urban myth? -- T.F.C. ANSWER: A diet high in fruits and vegetables may have a beneficial effect on cancer treatment, in combination with the best cancer treatments available, whether they are surgical, chemotherapeutic or radiation-based. Some of the “alkaline diets” I have read about do emphasize fruits and vegetables, and they may help and certainly will not hurt. However, there is no diet that is a substitute for comprehensive cancer care. The body has powerful mechanisms for maintaining an exact pH, regardless of the acidity (or alkalinity) of the food you eat. Both the lungs and the kidneys work together to maintain the body’s pH at a slightly alkaline 7.4. Only with severe illness will the body’s pH come out of its narrow range of normal, and when it does, that portends a poor outcome without immediate treatment. The mechanism by which fruits and vegetables have been shown to benefit some cancers is not precisely known, but it probably has to do with healthful components of the food, not through any effect on body alkalinity. ***

TREE SERVICES
Have trees that need removal or trimming?
PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Call “The Tree Service”
Should I Give My Dog a Lyme Disease Vaccine? --DEAR PAW’S CORNER: A fellow dog owner mentioned to me at the dog park that he had given his spaniel a vaccine to prevent Lyme disease. I’m wondering if I should do the same for my dog. How old should a dog be to receive the vaccine? Does it really protect dogs? -- Clint F., Saco, Maine DEAR CLINT: While it’s known that a Lyme vaccine (there are four different vaccines available today for dogs) does confer protection against contracting the disease from ticks, veterinarians are still debating whether it’s necessary to vaccinate dogs. You can read two vets’ opinions on this in a recent issue of Today’s Veterinary Practice (https://todaysveterinarypractice.com/vaccinating-dogs-against-lyme-disease/), with one for vaccination and the other not so sure. If you live in an area where Lyme disease is frequently diagnosed, and your dog loves being outdoors, you may want to consider the vaccine for your dog. If you only take your pet to the dog park and otherwise don’t spend much time exploring outside, a vaccine may not be necessary. The vaccine can be given to dogs as young as 8 to 9 weeks, and booster shots are recommended after the first shot. Even if you vaccinate your dog, you need to continue tick and flea prevention measures. Check your dog’s coat after every jaunt outside and quickly remove ticks. Mow the lawn regularly to discourage ticks and other pests from hanging out; if they’re still a problem, treat the lawn to deal with a flea or tick infestation. Not all ticks carry Lyme disease, but some carry other serious diseases, so keeping them off your dog and out of your home is a good idea.

* In 1978, DC put out a “Superman vs. Muhammad Ali” comic book. While the plot deals with hostile aliens, the book’s main highlight is the whooping Superman gets in a sparring match with “The Greatest”! * The first-ever fashion magazine was sold in Germany in 1586. * A French general, the Marquis de Lafayette, gave John Quincy Adams a pet alligator. Our sixth president not only kept it in a White House bathtub, but enjoyed showing it off to visitors.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles On Our Wish List: Basketballs The recreation center is open again! While they tried to do a “soft opening,” word traveled quickly. Going to the rec center won’t be as it was before, of course. There used to be classes in the middle of the gym, which is surrounded by a long indoor track. Scattered around the interior were basketball hoops and exercise mats. Now, we’re told, we’ll check in at the front door for a specified timeslot (one hour) on the track. At the end of our time period, the center will be emptied and the next group let in. There will be no classes, no use of mats, no basketball ... but we’ll have indoor walking. This is the best news we’ve had around here in a very long time. Indoor walking, while not urgently needed right now, will be most welcome when cold weather arrives. Icy sidewalks send many of us to the rec center, which was closed last year, to walk in winter. But, we’re told, we won’t be able to buddy up and walk with a friend, chatting as we do laps. We’ll walk alone in the right lane, passing in the left lane if we should overtake the person in front of us. No, we won’t be able to use the mats for pre-walk stretching (they’re stacked in the storeroom), and no, the guys won’t be able to play basketball (the balls also are in the storeroom). So, why, if there are so many restrictions about using the rec center, are we happy? We’re happy because it’s one small sign that maybe, just maybe, things are inching back to normal. How will we know for sure? We’ll know, said one wit, if we walk into the rec center and the basketballs are on their racks at the center of the courts. That’s going to be our barometer: basketballs. SENIORS AND EXERCISE: TIPS TO AVOID INJURIES, GET HEALTHY Stretch. Bodies that have been inactive for lengthy periods of time are inflexible, and lack of flexibility increases your risk for injury. The AAOS recommends that seniors warm up their bodies before stretching with five to 10 minutes of low-intensity activity such as walking. Then stretch gently, remembering to relax and breathe during each stretch.
