DID YOU KNOW? Tipping men and women who work in the food service industry is commonplace in the United States and Canada, where citizens typically tip between 15 and 20 percent when dining out at restaurants. But American and Canadian travelers about to depart for overseas destinations may want to familiarize themselves with the practices regarding gratuities before their planes touch down. Some countries automatically add gratuities onto customers’ bills. For example, the government in Dubai mandates that a 10 percent service charge be added to all hotel, restaurant and bar bills. This service charge is then divided by the staff at the establishment, making the charge the equivalent of a tip. Diners in Morocco, where the gratuity is sometimes included in the bill, might be surprised to learn that a 10 percent tip in that country is considered generous. Tips are included in the bill in Costa Rica, where travelers need not feel obligated to leave any additional gratuities. Service is often included in the bill within the United Kingdom as well, though travelers should inspect the bill before assuming gratuity was included. Visitors to Spain should not feel obligated to leave a gratuity larger than 13 percent, and even a tip in the range of 7 percent is considered acceptable.

DAY TRIPS SENIORS CAN ENJOY Museums: Museums are ideal day trip destinations because many are indoors. That means weather never needs to be an issue while visiting. With historic artifacts, paintings, sculptures, or niche items like pop art or collectibles, there are museums for just about every interest. For example, railway enthusiasts can visit the National Railroad Museum in Wisconsin, one of the oldest railroad museums in the country.

CARPET/FLOORING
CONSIDERATIONS WHEN CHOOSING CARPETING When the time comes to choose flooring for their homes, homeowners may be overwhelmed by the vast array of options at their disposal. The choice between carpet and hardwood flooring, laminate or tile is a matter of personal preference. People have long extolled the virtues of hardwood flooring, but carpeting can be just as stylish and provides a host of other benefits as well. Carpeting insulates rooms in the summer and winter, adding that extra level of protection against the elements. Carpeting also absorbs sound in a home. Many appreciate the warmth and cozy feeling of carpet, especially when stepping out of bed. Carpeting also can increase the level of safety at home. According to the Carpet and Rug Institute, carpeting makes areas of play safer and may also reduce the severity of an injury in the event of a fall. Today, there are many different types of carpeting available. Selecting the right carpeting for a room comes down to identifying the level of traffic in a particular room, the attributes homeowners would like the carpet to have and any other needs that fit with their lifestyles. Take time when shopping for carpeting, which is a substantial investment that can last for many years if the right material is chosen and installed correctly.

COLD W EATHER W ILDLIFE IN HOM ES BOOSTS DISEASE AND PROPERTY DAM AGE RISKS M any people may practice the “ love thy neighbor” creed, but w hen it comes to four-legged w ildlife su ch as raccoons, squirrels, and opossum that often seek refuge in yards and homes w hen outdoor temperatures dip and food sources become scarce, they are best kept at an arm’s length. As community development has thin ned natural habitats and forced these critters into residential areas and lessened their fears of people , the National Pest M anagement Association (NPM A) has found that many areas of the country continue to report incre ased encounters w ith nuisance w ildlife. “ W hile it can be a unique experience to spot w ildlife in neighborhoods, these animals should be disc ouraged from taking up residence,” advises M issy Henriksen, vice president of public affairs for the NPM A. “ Not only can they damage property, many are vectors of disease, most notably rabies.” According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 40,000 people are exposed t o rabies each year, a viral infection passed through the bite and saliva of an infected mammal. Raccoons, fox es, skunks, coyotes and bats are the most commonly reported animals infected w ith rabies. Because of the risks a ssociated w ith these pests, homeow ners should take extra precautions to protect against them.

Considering the fragile state of Ukraine and in light of the already senseless loss of life with further atrocities expected from the Russian military, should the United States become involved militarily to defend Ukraine?

Churchville-Chili’s Churchville Elementary & Chestnut Ridge Schools Go All In for 2022 Kid’s Heart Challenge BY AMANDA PULEO
C
hurchville-Chili elementary school students once again took the American Heart Association’s (AHA) Kids Heart Challenge: learning how to develop hearthealthy habits. The challenge is a longstanding tradition for students at both Churchville Elementary School (CES) and Chestnut Ridge Elementary School (CRS). This year, each school celebrated a bit differently, but everyone had a great time. Thanks to the incredible generosity of the Churchville community, both schools raised impressive donations for the AHA that will benefit local friends and neighbors.
• At Churchville Elementary, students school-wide participated in special activities in physical education classes. A remarkable 158 students volunteered to fundraise for the AHA, and they surpassed the school’s $10,000 goal with a grand total of $25,420.98 – the school’s highest total in their 21 years of participation. • As Chestnut Ridge carefully launched its first Kids Heart Challenge since the pandemic began, activities were limited to grades 2-4. The gym was transformed for two weeks into the Kids Heart Challenge Fitness Center with a variety of special equipment. Students were offered “Challenge by Choice,” a concept that gave them full ownership of their own workout plans. They planned balanced workouts by focusing on the four components of health-related fitness: cardiovascular endurance, muscle endurance, muscle strength and flexibility. Students enjoyed the activities and by the end of the challenge, they had raised over $10,000 for the AHA. Chestnut Ridge School, like CES, has also taken part in the AHA campaign for over 20 years. In 2012, the school was the top fundraiser in the nation. This year’s campaign was managed by longtime organizers PE teachers Greg Kincaid and Brooke Elnicky. Elnicky said, “Kids Heart Challenge is a great service learning program. It teaches students that being active and having good habits can be fun and keep them healthy. They learn that they can help save lives in their own community by raising money to support research, education and services used by peers and local families.” Students at Churchville Elementary had an extra treat - a special assembly on Feb. 15 - to recognize their success. The school’s two honorary Heart Heroes, students Aubrey and Ellianna, were acknowledged: The two had inspired classmates with their personal stories of coping with difficult heart problems. AHA representative William Mitchell was on hand to thank students

for their efforts and hard work. Top fundraisers were also named, each collecting more than $1,000 for the cause: Madelyn will enjoy being Assistant Principal for the Day, while Principal David Johnson will cede his title (and office desk) twice, to first-place winner Emma and second-place campaigner Evelyn – Principals for the Day. The highlight of the assembly was the choosing of five students who lined up with whipped cream pies and happily pushed them into the faces of PE teachers and program coordinators Bethany Matsko and Chester Palozzi along with teacher Kristina Zito, Assistant Principal Kim Giancursio and of course, Principal Johnson.
Johnson said, “It’s wonderful to see our students take part in all the heart-healthy races and exercises and learn about citizenship and making a difference. But it’s astounding to see how seriously they take this opportunity to help others, and it is truly inspiring to see how our families support their efforts.” More than 3,000 schools nationwide participate in the Kids Heart Challenge programs. The events are fun, promote sports and fitness, educate students in the risks of heart disease and stroke, and help lay the groundwork for life-long community activism and volunteering. Both Churchville Elementary and Chestnut Ridge schools have participated for many years and consistently place in the top echelon of the state’s fundraising schools.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES THAT ARE PERFECT FOR SENIORS Water aerobics: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that waterbased exercises can be especially helpful individuals with chronic diseases, a category many seniors fall into. The CDC notes that one study published in the journal Arthritis & Rheumatology found that improves the use of joints affected by arthritis without worsening symptoms. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services also notes that swimming can lead to improved health for people with diabetes and heart disease. Seniors can reap these benefits by going for a dip in their own backyard pools or a local body of water, such as a lake or ocean. Many swim clubs also offer discounted memberships to seniors, making these another great and affordable way to reap the benefits of swimming.

PHILLY CHEESESTEAK DUMPLINGS Makes about 45 50 thin square eggless wonton wrappers (around 4 inches in size) Vegetable oil, for frying Filling: 5 ounces shiitake mushrooms, stems removed and finely chopped 1 tablespoon roasted sesame oil 1 pound, 2 ounces cooked, shredded beef short ribs 11 ounces cabbage kimchi, drained and finely chopped 3 1/2 ounces spring onions, finely chopped 3 ounces pickled jalapeños, finely chopped 1 pound, 2 ounces mature cheddar cheese, grated Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste To serve: Silgochu (dried chilli threads) 1 spring onion, julienned and soaked in ice water until curled, then drained Sriracha For the filling, first sauté the mushrooms in the sesame oil in a large nonstick frying pan over medium-low heat until just softened. Remove from the heat and set aside. In a large bowl, combine the rest of the filling ingredients with the mushrooms. Mix together using your hands, really breaking up the short rib meat to make a uniform texture. For the dumplings, line a couple of baking sheets with parchment and set aside. Fill a small bowl with water. Unwrap the wonton wrappers and cover lightly with a piece of clingfilm to keep them moist. Lay a wrapper on a clean work surface and put 1 ounce of the meat filling in the center. Dip a forefinger into the water and run it along the edges of the wrapper to moisten the surface. Now bring the open edges to the center, and pinch where the edges meet each other, creating four seams in a cross shape. Set aside and cover with clingfilm or a damp tea towel while you shape the rest. Repeat with the remaining wrappers and filling, making sure the dumplings are not touching on the baking sheets. To a medium saucepan, add the vegetable oil and heat to 340 F (170 C). Working in batches, place the dumplings on their sides in the pan in a single layer without crowding. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes until golden brown. Transfer the fried dumplings to a wire rack or kitchen paper-lined plate to drain. Repeat with the remaining dumplings. If you don’t plan on cooking them straight away, you can freeze them on the baking sheets, then bag them up and store in the freezer. Top with some of the silgochu and curly spring onion and serve immediately with the sriracha.

GREAT SONGS FOR YOUR PADDY’S DAY PARTY “Finnegan’s Wake,” The Dropkick Murphys: Another classic Irish ballad that traces its origins to before the 20th century, “Finnegan’s Wake” is a comical tale of the supposed death of Tim Finnegan, a man who loved his liquor. When his friends host a wake in his honor and accidentally spill whiskey on his corpse, Finnegan miraculously awakes and joins in the celebration. This version of the song from the Boston-based Celtic punk rockers will have hosts and their guests bobbing their heads in between laughs.

RECOGNIZE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS Air fresheners: These seemingly innocuous products may be doing more harm than good. Information published in a 2015 issue of The Journal of Toxicological Sciences linked air fresheners to volatile organic compounds, or VOCs. They also may contain ultra-fine particles of formaldehyde and phenol. In addition, National Geographic’s The Green Guide states that many air fresheners contain nerve-deadening chemicals that coat nasal passages and temporarily block one’s sense of smell. Many widely available air fresheners use phthalates, which are linked to hormonal and reproductive issues, birth defects and developmental disorders. In lieu of chemical air fresheners, spray diluted essential oils around the house.

TALKING OF TONGUES A pink, healthy tongue is a vital part of oral health. Neglect or lack of proper care of this essential organ can lead to the harboring of destructive bacteria that adversely affects overall dental health. Regular dental examinations include evaluations to appraise the tongue’s color and texture since these factors are vital to oral health. Discoloration of the tongue, any color other than pink, or changes in the normal, smooth texture, could indicate a number of oral or other underlying health issues that need to be addressed. The human tongue is actually a muscle, essential to numerous bodily functions like speaking, breathing, and eating. It is susceptible to a multitude of diseases including tongue cancer.
so we can establish a baseline against which we can measure your future oral profile and progress. And whether we’re dealing with tongues or teeth, regular professional checkups make it possible to watch for developing concerns and address them while they are still small, before they can turn into something more serious. For an appointment for advanced, gentle dental care, please call us at 585.343.4246, 6 Batavia City Centre. P. S. The tongue is a complicated part of the human body, requiring over 8,000 various motor signals to help it move.

WORK PANTS: THE NEXT GENERATION (NAPSI)—Just as technology has had a major effect on the kind of work people do, it has also changed the clothes in which they do that work. For example, with hard work in mind, a new collection of pants has been created by Carhartt with a unique blend of durability and functionality. “Our company has been around for nearly 130 years, and throughout our history, we’ve continued to improve our product offerings to fit the needs of our hardworking consumers,” says Deb Ferraro, vice president of product development at Carhartt. “This new collection of pants reinforces our commitment to setting a new standard for workwear.” Carhartt’s Steel Multi-Pocket pant, Steel Double-Front pant, and Steel Cargo pant feature the brand’s Full Swing® technology and a fabric blend of cotton, nylon and spandex. First introduced in 2015, Full Swing® uses stretch panels to provide ease of movement in the joints, improving hardworking consumers’ range of motion where they need it most—both on and off the job. Additionally, each of the new pant styles is equipped with knee pad openings designed to fit the company’s most recent innovation in knee protection. The Carhartt knee pad features a strapless, honeycomb design that maximizes durability and comfort, providing an easy-to-wear solution for impact protection. The launch of these new work pants coincides with a celebration of Carhartt’s oldest work pants. The classic Firm Duck Double-Front Work Dungaree was first introduced to the company’s product line in 1939, and it is now the focal point of the brand’s latest campaign celebrating its sewing, cutting and distribution associates. The video highlights the product details while unveiling the craftsmanship behind every pair of the B01 Firm Duck Double-Front Work Dungarees. To learn more about Carhartt’s latest pants and knee pads, visit www.Carhartt.com. To watch the brand’s latest video, “61 Workers, One Mission,” visit the Carhartt channel on YouTube. Late Relapse Possible in Breast Cancer Patients ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I just read another sad story about a woman who had breast cancer, fought it and seemed to win, but after five years, it came back and took her life. The same sequence of events happened to my wife two years ago. She fought the second round of cancer for a year and a half, but it was just about everywhere. What is this connection between the initial breast cancer occurrence and it coming back five or six years later even more widespread throughout the body? Is screening stepped up during that period? -- Anon. ANSWER: I am very sorry to hear about your wife. With most cancers, no evidence of disease five years out from diagnosis usually means a cure, that the person will not have a recurrence of that particular cancer, although people who’ve had one cancer are at a higher risk of developing a second, unrelated cancer. Breast cancer is one of the exceptions. Late recurrences (after five years) are possible, even very late recurrences. I have seen 20 years afterward, and there are reports of even longer. Although the reasons why breast cancer seems to hide for many years are not known precisely, we do know some risk factors for recurrence: Larger tumors are more likely to recur. Those with positive lymph nodes are at high risk, and women with estrogen receptor positive, progesterone receptor positive and HER2 negative tumors are more likely to experience recurrence. Screening is absolutely appropriate in women who have had breast cancer. There is not a consensus about the type and frequency of screening, but many experts choose yearly mammography. Breast MRI has been considered, but it has not been proven to be better in women with a history of breast cancer. A healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise, a diet with plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, abstinence from smoking and minimal alcohol intake, has been shown to reduce cancer risk in women with a history of breast cancer. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc., All Rights Reserved

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * An outbreak of the common cold occurred at an Antarctic base after 17 weeks of complete isolation. * After high school senior Allison Closs dressed up a cardboard cutout of Danny DeVito to go with her to prom, the actor returned the favor by bringing a cardboard cutout of Allison to the set of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” * Actual town names in the U.S. include Rabbit Hash (Kentucky), Two Egg (Florida), Ding Dong (Texas) and Bacon (Delaware).
* Peas, spinach, sweet potato, squash and carrots can be pureed and added to baked goods to increase fiber and nutrients. They are especially useful in soups to thicken a broth without adding fat. You can sneak some veggies into unexpected places, too -- like cookies, pancake batter and pasta dishes, or make a flavorful sandwich spread.

GEORGIA ON MY MIND
* “When you get a new pair of running shoes, treat the insides with spray starch. We have always done this, and it keeps them fresher longer.” -- S.M. in Indiana * Tubes make it easy to access toothpaste when they are full, but it’s sometimes hard to get that last bit out. Here’s a tip from C.W. in Oregon: “To get the last bit of a tube of toothpaste to come out, run the tube under warm water for a few seconds. There’s more still in there than you think!” * It’s easy to sort hardware using a muffin pan. If you get a pan that has 12 depressions, you can line up nails and screws and such according to size, making it even more convenient.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Before You Sign Up for Senior Discounts We all want to save a dollar every place we can. Discounts aimed at seniors are a good way to get our attention, but now and then it’s just not a good idea to sign up. For example, if you’re low income, Amazon Prime offers a reduced-price membership. With Prime you get free shipping, access to movies and music, and more. Your membership is only $5.95 per month -- after you furnish an image of your Social Security, Medicaid (not Medicare), TANF or SNAP card. You’ll need to renew this every year to keep getting the discount to ensure you’re still on the program. You can stay on this reduced rate for four years. The dilemma is that you’re providing your personal information -- Medicaid number, Social Security number and so on -- to people you don’t know. Where does that information end up? If you cancel your membership, is that information destroyed? Reduced prescription costs are available at certain drugstore chains, but generally on a limited basis, perhaps one day per month. One chain will offer to let you link a new account with them to your existing AARP membership. With another one, should you prefer not to give them your email address, they’re more than happy to take your name and phone number instead. A number of phone companies have reduced plans for seniors. But they do verify your age. With two of them you need to go into the store with a valid ID. With another they’ll use the information they already have on file from when you started your original service with them. How
securely have they kept that information? Before you snap up a senior discount deal, consider what you need to give up to get that discount. Think about whether the information you give can be used for identity theft. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Program Meets Underserved Nursing Need in Philadelphia Area (NAPSI)—By 2030, the baby boomer generation, totaling more than 2.1 million in Pennsylvania, will be over 65. Many will require medical care at nonhospital settings such as long-term care facilities and community health centers. Yet, our country’s ability to care for this population will be impacted by the dwindling number of nurses. In response, All-State Career School, a leading postsecondary institution in Essington, has launched a new Practical Nursing (PN) program to provide a pipeline of support to hospitals and other health care facilities in the South Philadelphia metropolitan area. “One of our goals for this new PN program is to increase the number of well-prepared, professional, caring nurses who can be employed in this community,” said Dr. Sheila Burke, Vice President of Nursing for Education Affiliates. The new Fortis School of Nursing at All-State Career School in Essington is the most recent offering in a network of schools managed by Education Affiliates, Inc., one of the largest nursing education providers in the U.S. The system currently educates over 4,000 nursing students nationwide and operates 29 nursing programs in 10 states. “Southeast Pennsylvania is in dire need of nursing professionals and we’re excited to offer this new program to serve the community,” said Edward Rito, Area Campus President of All-State Career School in Essington. “We look forward to replicating the great success Fortis Institute’s practical nursing programs have experienced at its Scranton campus.” The Fortis School of Nursing at All-State Career School in Essington offers an accredited 60-week practical nursing program. The program was granted initial approval by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing. To learn more about preparing for a career in nursing, contact 610-3621124 for more information.

SMALL MOMENTS MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE (NAPSI)—There are about 74 million children in America today and if you’re a parent, here’s something you should know: involved fathers— whether they live with their kids or not—can help their children lead happier, healthier and more successful lives. Children who feel close to their fathers are two times more likely to go to college or find a job after high school, 80 percent less likely to end up in jail and 50 percent less likely to experience depression.1 The small moments kids enjoy spending with their fathers can make a big difference in their lives. If you’re like most fathers, you’re already doing what you can to be a great dad. Here’s a look at five easy ways to keep it up. What You Can Do 1. Spend time with your children. 2. Be a positive role model. 3. Send a text to stay connected when far away. 4. Read to your children. 5. Remember #DadJokesRule! There has been a massive growth in fatherhood involvement over decades—fathers now spend nearly triple the amount of time with their children than fathers did in the 1960s.2 What Dads are Already Doing Recent research suggests fathers are already very involved:
BAPTIST Cornerstone Church of East Pembroke 2583 Main Rd. (Rt. 5) - 762-8721 - cornerstonechurchep@yahoo.com Sunday Service 10:30 a.m. - Rev. Glenn Bloom Nursery for ages birth - 3 yrs. Adult Bible Study Weds 10 am First Sunday - Communion Sunday & Coffee Hour Souper Soup Supper March 24 @ 4:30pm
• 90 percent consider their role as a dad to be rewarding day in and day out.3 • 78 percent have talked to their child’s teacher about progress in school.4 • 61 percent have attended a PTA or other school meeting.5 • Over half have helped with a class trip, special project or activity.6
COMMUNITY CHURCH
• Over a third of fathers have helped with coaching their children’s sports teams.7 Even though fathers are largely more involved than in previous generations, dads today still want to be more engaged. Nearly half say they don’t spend enough time with their kids and want to do a better job at parenting.8 To help more fathers understand the importance of their role in their children’s lives, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families, the National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse (@fatherhoodgov), and the Ad Council (@ adcouncil) have partnered on a national Responsible Fatherhood Campaign. “All dads should be supported and celebrated for their efforts on Father’s Day and year-round because we know how the story ends for the kids whose fathers show up for them consistently—these children and families thrive,” says Kenneth Braswell (@braswellkenneth), Director, National Responsible Fatherhood Clearinghouse and Fathers Incorporated. The campaign drives to Fatherhood.gov a free resource that offers information, tools and more. Dads can visit the website for ideas to get involved and stay involved in their children’s lives. Other resources include activity suggestions, homework help, online games and a long list of dad jokes! No matter how busy you may be, make time for your children. It only takes a moment to make a moment.

HOW TO INVOLVE MORE YOUNG PEOPLE IN AGRICULTURE Highlight the challenges ahead and how agricultural professionals can help overcome them. UN projections indicate the global population will grow by more than two billion people by 2050. Finding a way to feed all of those people in the face of climate change will be no small task, but it’s a task that will require dedicated agricultural professionals. Educators and parents can emphasize these challenges when speaking to young people about a career in the agricultural sector, noting that such careers will present real opportunities to make a difference.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Surrendering a Pet

PUPPY PALACE Full Grooming Services
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: When my grandmother passed away last fall, she left behind two beautiful cats. No one else in the family wanted to take care of them, so I took them in. However, I’m financially unable to care for them long-term, and the apartment complex I live in does not allow pets. I’m on borrowed time (and money) at this point, and praying that my apartment manager doesn’t find out about the cats. I contacted a shelter nearby to find out if they will accept the cats. They said there is a “surrender fee” of $200. No way can I pay that; I’m on a fixed income. What alternatives do I have? -- Sherrie R., via email DEAR SHERRIE: I’m sorry to hear about your predicament. You have extended your home and finances to care for two cats in need, and I salute you for it. But you’re right: the current situation is not ideal for you or the cats. When preparing to surrender a pet, the receiving shelter will request that you try every possible option first. Many shelters will provide advice and limited assistance for pet owners going through this. One option would be for you to contact family members and friends directly (not on public social media posts) to ask if they would be able to adopt the cats. If a surrender to the shelter is the last resort, contact your family to see if they can chip in for the surrender fees. After all, you’ve already taken on the cost of food, supplies and maybe medical care for them. You’ve taken on the risk of losing your lease, too. Speak calmly with your relatives about sharing the cost. Best of luck.

PET OBESITY IS A GROWING PROBLEM Many pet owners would never intentionally harm their companion animals. In fact, pet owners often go above and beyond to ensure their animals are well cared for and content. However, many well-meaning people may be inadvertently harming their pets with something they provide each and every day: food. Obesity is on the rise among pets. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention says that 54 percent of dogs and 59 percent of cats in the United States were categorized as overweight or obese in 2016. That marks an increase from 52.5 percent and 58.3 percent, respectively, from four years ago. The majority of veterinarians think that pet obesity is a significant problem and nearly half of pet owners admit that their vets have discussed a pet’s ideal weight with them during pet health visits.

S E V RA Above & Beyond While my husband and I were at Maple Tree Inn this past weekend, we happened to witness a business that went above and beyond for a customer who was in great distress. They didn’t have to do what they did, and most businesses wouldn’t have. It was very heartwarming to see, and I for one applaud them. A great example of customer service and compassion. My Fair Lady Cheers to the Rochester Broadway Theatre League for bringing to Rochester the musical “My Fair Lady.” What a wonderful show it was, and I liked it even better than the original movie! It was that good! March Madness What a wonderful time of year it is for all of us hoop fans - it’s March Madness! Shout Out! Shout out to all of the fire, EMT, and other emergency responders for their hard work during the wind storm on Sunday. You are appreciated!
No Denying I’m confused regarding this back and forth about global warming. Who’s denying it? We all know it’s changing. The only question is how much does man really impact these changes? Sure, there’s a lot we can do to lessen our impact, but the changes of warming and cooling have been proven over and over again to be a part of our planet’s history. So, who’s denying it? Local Dog Walker It is great that you pick up after your dog when you walk our local neighborhood. However, it would be really great if you also took that little black bag back home with you! Today while walking, one of the people in the neighborhood put your 10 bags (yes 10 bags), in the middle of the sidewalk and this from just a short distance of a walk for most of us. We are all looking for you, and when we find you, the local police and dog warden will also know you. Why is it so hard to take the bag back home with you like a responsible person? The people’s lawns that you leave the little packages on are really tired of them. There is a law, you know, and you are not above it. We know it is from one person, and everyone is on the look out for you. Clean up and take your bags home. This is also your neighborhood, but you are not a good neighbor, that is for sure. Choices In response to Choose One: No, we should use either paper or plastic, metal or glass wherever appropriate. Paper bags, plastic cars? Yes, I hate to see a tree come down, but trees (and wood and paper) are renewable resources; oil is not. Paper is biodegradable; plastic is not. It’s that simple. We should choose the ones that are least damaging to the environment case by case.

In a survey of 3,500 working professionals, Allied Van Lines found that 17 percent had relocated for a job. Roughly 50 percent of those who relocated did so for career advancement and/or more money, while 8 percent moved to be closer to family or for other relationship reasons. Moving is often characterized as stressful, and 31 percent of survey respondents who moved indicated that finding a home was the most challenging part of relocating for a job. Acclimating to a new community (29 percent), finding services such as utilities and medical care (13 percent) and making friends (12 percent) were also cited as some of the most challenging parts of relocating for a job. As difficult as relocating can be, 64 percent of those who had relocated expressed positive sentiments toward their job relocation, while just 7.5 percent harbored negative feelings about relocating (28 percent were neutral).

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB Salary: Of course everyone would love to earn more money when changing jobs, but there is more to changing jobs than just improving your bottom line. As you begin your job search, consider how much you currently earn and if that allows you to live a life you love. If so, don’t overemphasize finding a new job that pays considerably more than your currently earn. On the flip side, young professionals who want to start a family in the years ahead should consider the costs associated with such a decision and how the salaries they earn at their next jobs may affect what they want down the road.

THE RIGHT WAY TO UPDATE A RÉSUMÉ Embrace keywords. Many employers now use application tracking software to sift through the scores of résumés that are submitted for each opening they post. Keywords make it easy for employers to sort through thousands of résumés. The right keywords will flag your résumé and increase your “relevancy score” in the main HR/recruiting software programs available. Adapt your résumé for each application you submit. Use some of the words listed in the initial job posting and description. In addition, look at similar job postings and incorporate some keywords listed in those ads so that you have all the bases covered.
