Penny Saver Pet of the Week My name is Duncan and I found my parents when I was only 10 weeks old. They have shown me just how “cool” life can be when there is unconditional love. Besides lying in bed and snuggling with mom & dad, I love playing in the snow, so much that my mom and dad bought me my own coat and boots so I don’t get too cold playing outside…just don’t tell them I lost a boot! Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest and become eligible to win a gift. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. For return of photos, please include a selfaddressed, stamped envelope. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

Here’s what happens when you shop local 1. More of your money will be kept in your local economy For every $100 you spend at locally owned businesses, $68 will stay in the community. 2. You embrace what makes your community unique You wouldn’t want your house to look like everyone else’s in the U.S. so why would you want your community to look that way? 3. You create local jobs Local businesses are better at creating higher-paying jobs for your neighbors. When you shop locally, you help create jobs for teachers, firemen, police officers, and many other essential professions. 4. You help the environment Buying from a locally owned business conserves energy and resources in the form of less fuel for transportation and less packaging. 5. You nurture community Local business owners know you, and you know them. Studies have shown that local businesses donate to community causes at more than twice the rate of chains. 6. You conserve your tax dollars Shopping in a local business district means less infrastructure, less maintenance, and more money available to beautify your community. Also, spending locally instead of online ensures that your sales taxes are reinvested where they belong— in your community!
7. You create more choice Locally owned businesses pick the items and products they sell based on what they know you like and want. Local businesses carry a wider array of unique products because they buy for their own individual markets. 8. You took advantage of their expertise You are their friends and neighbors, and locally owned businesses have a vested interest in knowing how to serve you. They’re passionate about what they do. Why not take advantage of it? 9. You invested in entrepreneurship Creativity and entrepreneurship are what the American economy is founded upon. Nurturing local business ensures a strong community. 10. You made your community a destination The more interesting and unique your community, the more we will attract new neighbors, visitors and guests. This benefits everyone!

Feel Festive with Florals An easy first step to bring your home into the holiday season is to add festive fresh or dry floral arrangements. Evergreens and poinsettias always convey the essence of the season, but blooms in hues of rich purple, crisp white and even funky fuchsia will add cheerful energy to any room. A small floral arrangement on a bathroom vanity, for example, adds warmth and color - a particularly nice touch if you’re hosting guests.

Photo Ornaments Fun photo ornaments showcase how a family has changed and grown over the years. Experiment with different ways to create these ornaments. You can glue a photo to a ceramic ornament and cover it with decoupage glaze to set it permanently. Try purchasing clear, glass ornaments, then remove the top of the ornament, which is usually spring-loaded, before slipping a photo inside and replacing the top. You also can laminate a photo, punch a hole in the top and affix a ribbon.

Jamaica Lime Pie Serves 6 Filling 4 large egg yolks 1 large egg white 1 14-ounce can sweetened condensed milk 1/2 cup fresh lime juice 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 partially baked 9-inch pie crust, chilled Meringue 3 large egg whites 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar 6 tablespoons sugar To make the filling: In a medium bowl, beat the egg yolks and egg white until they are very thick and lemoncolored. Stir in the condensed milk, lime juice and salt until well blended. Pour into the chilled pie shell. Refrigerate for several hours to allow the filling to set. Shortly before serving, make the meringue. Preheat the oven to 425 F. In a large bowl, beat the 3 egg whites with the cream of tartar until they form soft peaks. Gradually beat in the sugar, and continue beating until it is dissolved. By then the meringue should be stiff and glossy. Spread over the filling, being sure to seal the edges well so that the meringue will not shrink. Bake for 5 to 7 minutes, or until delicately browned. Let cool away from drafts.

Students in the ADEPT program at Fairport High School show the three barrels of food they collected as part of a food drive to help support Foodlink, in December.
Students in Ms. McGrath’s and Mrs. Burgess’s ADEPT (Accessing and Developing Employment, Personal and Transitions skills) classes at Fairport High School (FHS) recently hosted a food drive for the Foodlink BackPack Program. As a result, the class was able to donate three full barrels of food and was awarded third place during the Tops Markets Food for Families Weigh-In Challenge this month to help support tens of thousands of children in the 10-county service area who receive free or reduced-price meals at school. “Our students were amazing as they created and displayed posters all over the school, were part of the morning announcements each day
publicizing the project and encouraging donations, along with collecting and graphing the food we collected,” said FHS Special Education Teacher Assistant Julie Vaisey. Vaisey said students will be visiting Foodlink in early 2017 to help assemble the backpacks in an effort for students to see the process from start to finish. Foodlink is a regional food hub and the Feeding America food bank serves 10 counties around the region. In the 2015-16 school year, the BackPack Program served more than 4,000 children and distributed nearly 45,000 bags of food.

Assistive devices help people remain mobile Disabilities affect people from all walks of life. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that around 55 million Americans have a disability of some kind. Of these people, 33 million have a disability that makes it difficult for them to carry out some daily activities. Statistics Canada states that, as of 2012, 13.7 percent of the population age 15 years or older reported having a disability that could impact daily life. People with disabilities may need assistive devices to reclaim some measure of their independence. For example, millions of people rely on wheelchairs or walking aids to get around. These are called assistive technology and rehabilitative devices, which include tools, equipment or products that can help people with disabilities get around more easily. These devices may be as small as magnifying glasses for reading to as large as wheelchairs. The National Institutes of Health state that 2.2 million people in the U.S depend on wheelchairs for day-to-day tasks and mobility. More than six million use canes, walkers or crutches to assist with mobility. The following are some of the common types of mobility devices available for purchase. · Canes: Canes are handheld devices that provide a little extra stability or support to weakened limbs. Canes are easily transported and can assist those who need only a little help. · Standard walkers: Also known as medical walkers, standard walkers offer substantial support and must be lifted

to move. That requires upper body strength, which can be difficult for some to maintain on long trips. · Rolling walkers: Rolling walkers are similar to standard walkers. But rolling walkers have wheels, either on the front only or on both sets of legs. They are somewhat less stable than standard walkers. Rolling walkers with wheel-locking devices may offer stability when needed. Some rolling walkers are called “rollators.” · Wheelchairs: Standard wheelchairs must be powered by the person in the chair or by someone pushing it from behind. This can be difficult for people with minimal upper body strength. Mechanical wheelchairs are powered with a lever or button. Some people may opt for motorized scooters over bulkier wheelchairs when possible. Assistive devices can be highly effective, but only when they are used properly and safely. Assistive devices should be measured for each user. Many walkers are height-adjustable. The width of a device also is important. A walker or another device that is too wide can affect mobility or require modifications to be made around the home. Weight is another consideration. The device should be lightweight so it can be maneuvered, but also weigh enough to provide enough stability to keep users upright. Users should proceed slowly and favor their stronger sides when relying on canes or walkers. Devices should not be used to climb atop other items like step stools. Children should not be allowed to play with or ride on assistive devices. If there are safety belts or locks on any assistive technology, they should be put in place before use to prevent further injury.

WINTER M ORE BRUTAL FOR ASTHM A & ALLERGY SUFFERERS As the w inter months drag on, c abin fever sets in for many people. How ever, being c ooped up inside is even harder for people suffering from asthma and allergies bec ause more time indoors means greater exposure to indoor allergens. Although mold, pet dander and dust mites are often blamed for sneezing and itc hy eyes this time of year, the National Pest M anagement Assoc iation (NPM A) w arns that w inter pests suc h as c oc kroac hes and rodents c an also be c ommon asthma and allergy triggers. “ The saliva, urine and fecal droppings from cockroaches and rodents contain allergen proteins know n to elicit allergic reactions and asthma attacks,” said Dr. Jorge Parada, medical advisor for the NPM A. “ During the w inter months, cockroaches and rodents seek shelter from the elements inside homes, thereby increasing allergic reactions among those people w ho suffer from allergies and asthma.” According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA), cockroach allergens are present in 63 percent of American homes, and mouse allergens in 82 percent. M oreover, the number of homes containing cockroach allergens increases to as many as 78 to 98 percent in urban areas. “ It’s important for a person suffering from allergy or asthma symptoms to see his or her doctor. A medical professional w ill be able to test for a cockroach allergy, as w ell as other common allergens,” Parada advised. “ Although there is no cure for asthma, asthma can be controlled through medical treatment and management of environmental triggers. A doctor may recommend the use of antihistamines and decongestant medications to manage symptoms, and may also prescribe an anti-inflammatory medication and bronchodilators.”
DEAR DR. ROACH: Could you please explain the difference between irritable bowel syndrome and irritable bowel disease? What is the treatment for each? I saw in a health magazine that there is a blood test to determine which one someone may have. -- ES ANSWER: Although the two names are very similar, the conditions are very different. Irritable bowel syndrome is a common condition, more frequent in women than in men, of abdominal discomfort and bowel changes, such as diarrhea and/or constipation. It is managed by diet (such as the low-FODMAP diet I have recommended several times), stress management and sometimes medications. It can cause significant changes in one’s social life, in addition to pain and discomfort. IBS is a clinical diagnosis, and there is no blood test to confirm it. Primary-care doctors manage IBS, and severe cases may benefit from the care of a gastroenterologist. Irritable bowel disease -- of which there are two types: ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease -- is a potentially life-threatening condition of the GI tract. In ulcerative colitis, there is inflammation that’s limited to the colon, whereas in Crohn’s disease, the inflammation can be in any part of the GI tract, from the lip to the anus, though it is most frequent in the far end of the small bowel and the colon. IBD should be managed by a gastroenterologist, preferably one with special expertise in these diseases. IBD usually is diagnosed by colonoscopy or other endoscopy with biopsy. Many blood tests can be abnormal in IBD, but only the pathologist’s report is definitive. Most people with IBD will need medication treatment, although symptoms and therefore treatment may change dramatically across time. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 83 and recently began having sciatica pain down my right thigh. My doctor recommended using a hotwater bottle. Are there any painkillers I can use? Are there any other products I can use? -- G.L.B. ANSWER: The sciatic nerve is a very large nerve that runs down the back of the leg. When the nerve is pressed on in the back -from a herniated disk in the back or from spinal stenosis -- there can be intense pain that feels like it is coming from the back, or anywhere from the top of the thigh to the foot. Since other nerves besides the sciatic can be affected, the condition is called lumbar radiculopathy. A herniated disk is when the shock-absorbing material in between the vertebrae comes out into the space where the nerve root is, on its way out of the spinal column toward the leg. Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the bony canal through which the nerve travels. In most cases, people get better within four to six weeks. Standard pain medications, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen, can be helpful. If pain is severe and not responsive, there are other treatments, including a short course of steroids and narcotics, which should be given only during that initial period of pain. Pain that persists for a longer period of time, or pain with weakness, especially with progressive symptoms, needs expert evaluation. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. Chronic sleep deprivation can put you at higher risk for chronic health problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease, and stroke. Oddly enough, the dentist is often the first person to diagnose a sleep disorder. In particular, “sleep apnea” is a condition that causes repeated breathing interruptions throughout the night. These breathing pauses can last anywhere from a few seconds to minutes, and may occur thirty or more times per hour. While snoring is the most common symptom of sleep apnea, toothgrinding (bruxism) is also a reliable indictator of sleep apnea. If the dentist finds evidence of tooth wear and/or receding gums, it may be an indication of nightly tooth grinding related to a potentially serious sleep problem. Chronic sleep deprivation can
also raise your risk of gum disease or making existing periodontal problems worse. Research suggests that it’s more damaging than either chronic stress or daily alcohol use. To schedule a consultation, please call BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL at 585.343.4246 or visit us at 6 Batavia City Centre. We believe that effective dental care comes when patients are provided with a comfortable, relaxing environment with compassionate dentists providing exceptional care. P.S. A small jaw, a tongue with scalloped edges, and redness in the throat (caused by excessive snoring) are indicators of bruxism and related problems.

Moving Tip While packing, create three piles. The first is your “must-go” pile. The second is your “must-sell” pile. The third is the “must-throw” pile, and it contains anything that can’t be sold at a garage sale or donated.
Savvy home sellers can employ a few tricks to make their home an instant hit when buyers pull up to the curb. If planting trees, don’t go too big: Especially large trees are not always attractive to prospective buyers, who likely won’t want sight lines obstructed or won’t want to worry about a tree falling and destroying their home during a storm.

Brake pads that are allowed to wear down can cause damage to the brakes’ rotors and calipers. That damage can prove costly and make things harder on your vehicle. Keep an eye on your vehicle’s brake pads, which are far less expensive to replace than rotors and calipers, and do not allow them to wear down to metal.

M any elements of vehicle maintenance become second nature to drivers once they have a few months of driving under their belts. Oil changes, routine checkups and periodic vehicle inspections can keep cars runn ing smoothly and safely on the road. But few drivers remember to maintain their headlights, a potentiall y dangerous oversight that can compromise the safety of drivers and their fellow motorists.

What a blessing it was to have the Classical Conversations group visit the Genesee County Nursing Home. The residents thoroughly enjoyed the caroling, cards and poinsettia pins. Thank you for spreading Christmas cheer! My car was stuck in a snow bank last night in absolute awful weather. Even though seeing right in front of you was difficult, two people stopped and made sure I was okay. When we live in a world where everyone has a cell phone, we often think not to stop – how much more are we going to be able to help this person when they have probably called someone and are getting help already? Well, I will think to stop next time because it was reassuring, especially since I was out on rural roads with nothing nearby. Thank you to all who stop and offer to help when they see someone stranded as well as those who tow out our cars and brave the storms to help others. You are all appreciated! Nicole Darrow, Holley To the Caring Residents and Businesses of Avon – Thank you for all the support you give to the Avon Food Pantry! A big thank you to Jennifer, who is now heading the operation, and to Chris for the work she has done. There are so many businesses and residents who give so much to help the ones less fortunate. I’ve lived in Avon for 78 years and have seen how caring the community is – what a blessing! Also, thank you Lions Club, for your gracious support. Thank you everyone! You know who you are! Merry Christmas & God Bless You All! Louie To Merri Mathes, Thank you for your dedication, caring, hard work and enthusiasm in making the Adventures 4-H Club AMAZING every year! The Palmer/Rusin Family!
I love this time of year. Laughs are less about being nervous and more about genuine joy. Hugs are given with a harder squeeze. Thanks are said with meaning and not just to be polite. Surprises are found hidden in candy-filled Christmas mugs. More hands are lent to those in need. Don’t stop, you kind & wonderful people, keep bringing happiness and encouragement. It’s contagious. ~Anonymous I want to thank the Good Samaritan who brushed all the snow off my truck this morning. It was a pleasant surprise after all the snow we had received the night before. Thank you again for your kindness! May you have the happiest of holidays and a blessed new year. A heartfelt thank you to the Livonia Ambulance, Livingston County EMS Medics, Noyes Memorial & Strong Hospital Emergency Departments along with the all the staff of the 6th floor 1200 unit at Strong Hospital for the care provided to our mother Diane Dillon on her recent stay. May you all have a blessed holiday season and Happy New Year 2017! Lynn, Ron & Jason Forrester A special thank you to everyone who helped put on the Christmas party at the Community Free Library in Holley on December 2nd. It was a special event and we love our library! What a wonderful blessing it is for the community!

To take something from a person and keep it for oneself: that is robbery. To take something from one person and then turn it over to another in exchange for as much money as you can get: that is business. Robbery is so much more stupid, since it is satisfied with a single, frequently dangerous profit; whereas in business it can be doubled without danger. ~Octave Mirbeau

Increase Your Productivity Avoid surfing the Internet. The Internet could be the single greatest contributor to the loss of worker productivity in history. While Internet access can help workers maintain some level of sanity during the work week, spending too much time surfing the Internet doesn’t do anyone any good (aside from Web advertisers, of course). If you must surf the Internet each day, do so at established intervals, such as lunch hour or the end of the day. Those who eat breakfast at the office could use the time while they eat to peruse some favorite Web sites, but keep such surfing to a minimum.
