HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Take time from your busy schedule to check out what’s going on around you. You might find that someone has been secretly trying to pull the wool over those beautiful Sheep’s eyes. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Once again, the Bovine’s boldness pays off in uncovering the source of a disturbing workplace situation. Your personal life calls for patience, as a certain matter plays itself out. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Forget about going all out to impress someone in your personal life. Just being yourself is all that matters. A workplace decision will need more time. Don’t rush into it. CANCER ( June 21 to July 22) Some supersensitive Crabs might take offense at what they perceive as a slight. But a closer look points to a simple misunderstanding. The weekend holds a welcome surprise. LEO ( July 23 to August 22) Sure, you can roar your head off over someone’s failure to keep a promise. But the wiser course would be to ask why it happened. Be prepared for an answer that might well surprise you. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A developing relationship needs time to find its direction. So please be patient and resist pushing things along. A recently cooled-down workplace situation could heat up again. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Congratulations. Your well-thoughtout proposal seems to be working. Someone who hasn’t agreed with you on most things in the past could turn out to be one of your major supporters. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Things seem to be going well. However, you can still expect criticism -- some of it pretty heavy. But as long as you can back up your position, you’ll be able to rise above it. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Getting together with people who care for you is a great way to get that ego boost you might feel you need at this time. Things start to look brighter by week’s end. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) You should be able to continue with your plans once you get past those temporary delays. Surprise, surprise. An offer to help comes from a most unlikely source. AQUARIUS ( January 20 to February 18) Prioritizing your tasks is important this week because of all those demands you have to deal with. The pressure eases in time for you to enjoy the weekend. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Save your energy and stay focused on what has to be done, despite all those distractions you’re likely to face. You should see some evidence of real progress by week’s end. BORN THIS WEEK: You are a generous, giving person who is always ready, willing and more than able to help others in need. Hi, my name is Denali (Siberian Husky) 2 years old and my brother is Mack (German Shepherd) also 2. We live on a farm with our family. We love to run in the fields, run along with the 4-wheeler and swim. Our friends come over for “play dates” and enjoy the open fields to run and play as well! Our friends are Macy (Blue Nose Pit Bull) age 3, Bella (Rottweiler) age 1½ and RJay (Small Terrier) age 6. We all are very friendly and social with other animals and people. Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it as the “POW.” Featured pets will be entered in the Pet of the Year Contest & become eligible to win a gift. FLU-FIGHTING TIPS: Food can be used to fend of the flu. Common foods that many people already have in their pantries can be powerful flu-fighters. Garlic, for example, contains compounds that have direct antiviral effects and may help destroy the flu before it affects the body. Raw garlic is best. In addition to garlic, citrus fruits, ginger, yogurt, and dark leafy greens can boost immunity and fight the flu, according to Mother Nature’s Network. The British Journal of Nutrition notes that dark chocolate supports T-helper cells, which increase the immune system’s ability to defend against infection.

HOBBIES FOR DIFFERENT PERSONALITY TYPES Men and women who have experienced great success in the world of business can pursue a host of low-stress opportunities with a goal of sharing their experiences with the next generation of business leaders. Teaching a course at a local college or university is one such avenue, and executives can even offer to work with high school students interested in pursuing careers in business. Teaching and mentoring might be less traditional hobbies than crocheting or woodworking, but they still provide a way for adults to pursue their passions away from the constraints of the office.

Tires that are under-inflated will negatively impact your vehicle’s fuel efficiency. In addition, the tires’ life expectancy is reduced considerably when tires are not properly inflated. Routinely check your tire pressure, especially if you drive a lot, and keep tires inflated at the pressure recommended in your vehicle’s owner’s manual.

FRIDAY, MARCH 1, 2019
COLD, PAINFUL FINGERS CAN MEAN A SERIOUS DISEASE (NAPSI)—“Zombie Hands.” That’s what can happen to an estimated 5 to 10 percent of the population when temperatures start to fall.
Things to consider when a Senior begins to isolate themselves Many seniors live alone and family lives out of town. Though they talk on the phone, family may not realize how much time a loved one is alone. This can put a senior in jeopardy of depression or potential health pitfalls. We may imagine mom or dad is doing the same things they’ve done for years. They sound the same, say they’re living life as usual, but in reality things may have changed. If possible, be in touch with a close friend. Give that person a call occasionally to see if things are going well from their perspective. If things aren’t going quite as smoothly, see if a trip for a few days can be worked into your schedule to do some investigating. If a loved one is doing less of their favorite things such as lunch with friends, going to the hairdresser, or not attending church, see if you can determine why. If they feel it’s no fun to go alone, fearful of a fall, possibly driving has become an issue… a companion aide can be a great added benefit! Maybe the loved one needs more “hands on” help. He or she appears to be forgetting things like daily medication or doctor’s appointments, there is weight loss or poor nutrition, frequent trips to Emergency…
In a typical case of Raynaud’s phenomenon, also known as Raynaud’s disease or syndrome, sufferers experience numbness and pain in their fingers, toes and other extremities. Fingers turn white, blue or red as the small blood vessels go into spasm within minutes of exposure to cold or stress, and they appear to be “dead” as blood flow is constricted. Named for the French physician Maurice Raynaud, who first recognized the condition in 1862, it causes an interruption of blood flow to the fingers, toes, nose or ears. There may be associated tingling, swelling or painful throbbing. The attacks may last from minutes to hours. In severe cases, the area may develop ulcerations and infections, which can lead to gangrene.
consider senior housing. A place where meals, housekeeping and medication management is included as well as activities to help them engage more often with others and staff to help when needed. With either option, remember, any improvement can positively affect your loved one’s quality of life! Sponsored by: The Manor House Senior Living, 427 E. Main St, Batavia; Senior Living Apartments & NYS Licensed Enriched Care Program. 585.344.2345 www.themanorhouseasl.com
Raynaud’s can occur as a “primary” disease—that is, with no associated disorder—or as a “secondary” condition related to other diseases, such as scleroderma, lupus, and rheumatoid arthritis. “Ninety percent of Raynaud’s sufferers don’t seek treatment and too many physicians pay short shrift to those who do,” says Lynn Wunderman, founder and chair of the Raynaud’s Association. “Treatment is important because some sufferers may have an underlying condition such as systemic scleroderma or lupus. Awareness of such a problem may allow for earlier medical intervention.” Simple blood tests can rule out the presence of antibodies associated with diseases that have Raynaud’s as a component. What’s Being Done To help, the Raynaud’s Association, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit health organization, launched a new and assertive campaign,”Don’t Turn a Cold Shoulder to Painful Fingers,” to urge those with the disorder— and their doctors—not to dismiss the pain that Raynaud’s sufferers endure, or the lifestyle adjustments they make to minimize exposure to cold or stress. Although there is no known cure as yet, treatment options such as calcium channel blocker drugs have been clinically proven to alleviate symptoms by opening up the blood vessels so blood circulates more freely.

How To Lend A Warm Helping Hand You can support the Raynaud’s Association with a tax-deductible donation. Contributions help fund member mailings, the website, awareness-building efforts, and thousands of educational materials distributed each year to sufferers. Check Your Eligibility Depending on your filing status and income level, you may qualify for a nonrefundable credit of up to $1,000 (or $2,000 if filing jointly) on your federal income taxes for that year when you contribute to a 401(k), 403(b), 457(b) or similar retirement plan, or IRA. To be eligible, the maximum Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) for single filers is $31,500 in 2018 and $32,000 in 2019. For the head of a household, the AGI maximum is $47,250 in 2018 and $48,000 in 2019. For those who are married and file a joint return, the AGI maximum is $63,000 in 2018 and $64,000 in 2019. You must be 18 years or older by January 1 and cannot be a full-time student or be claimed as a dependent on another person’s tax return. 2. Save for Retirement Save for retirement in your employer’s retirement plan, if offered, or in an IRA. In general, for every dollar you contribute to a qualified retirement plan or IRA (up to the lesser of the limits permitted by an employer-sponsored plan or the IRS), you defer that amount from your current overall taxable income on your federal tax returns—and you may also qualify for the Saver’s Credit. After-tax contributions, such as those made to a Roth IRA or Roth 401(k), are also eligible for the credit. You have until April 15, 2019 to make a contribution to an IRA for tax year 2018. 3. File Your Tax Return and Claim the Credit When you prepare your federal tax returns, you can claim your Saver’s Credit by subtracting this tax credit from your federal income taxes owed. Workers who are eligible to claim the Saver’s Credit are also eligible to take advantage of the IRS Free File program for taxpayers with an AGI of $66,000 or less. Twelve commercial software companies make their tax preparation software available through the Free File program at www.irs.gov/FreeFile. • If you are using tax preparation software, use Form 1040 or Form 1040NR. If your software has an interview process, be sure to answer questions about the Saver’s Credit, also referred to as the Retirement Savings Contributions Credit and/or Credit for Qualified Retirement Savings Contributions. • If you are preparing your tax returns manually, complete Form 8880, the Credit for Qualified Retirement Savings Contributions, to determine your exact credit rate and amount. Then transfer the amount to Schedule 3 (Form 1040) or Form 1040NR. • If you are using a professional tax preparer, be sure to ask about the Saver’s Credit. • Consider having any refund you receive directly deposited to an IRA to further boost your retirement savings. The 19th Annual Transamerica Retirement Survey found that 62 percent of American workers are unaware that the Saver’s Credit exists. Don’t overlook this important tax credit; it may help you pay less in your current federal income taxes while saving for retirement. Spread the word—perhaps friends and family are eligible for this incentive but are unaware of it. For more details and resources on the Saver’s Credit in English and Spanish, visit Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies® at www.transamericacenter.org/saverscredit. TCRS is a division of Transamerica Institute®, a nonprofit, private foundation. The Saver’s Credit—an overlooked tax credit made available by the IRS to eligible taxpayers—could make saving for retirement more affordable than many people realize.

Begin Again Horse Rescue Faces Full Stalls By Amanda Dudek perhaps $8,000-10,000 in grants a year, but this has dropped to around $3,000.” Lilly explains that this is due to increasing competition for available grants as well as grant types. Many available grants are not specifically for horse rescue, but rather, they involve a service component, such as working with people with special needs or helping veterans. Therefore, Lilly and her rescue partners are finding ways to expand Begin Again.
Jennif Lilly with Countdown, Jennifer C tdo a miniature miniat horse ho who’s owner passedd aaway. He was in need of a new home and found one, even at 30 years old.
J
ennifer Lilly, a founder and Executive Director at Begin Again Horse Rescue in Lima, has a passion for horses and educating others on their care and wellbeing. The nonprofit organization, Begin Again Horse Rescue, takes in horses at risk of neglect, abuse and possible slaughter. Lately, there have been more horses in need than stalls available. Begin Again Horse Rescue formed in 2009 with just Lilly and two other friends, helping horses from bad situations. “We take in horses at risk of neglect, abuse and possible slaughter, work with area humane societies which have no or limited facilities for horses, save them from auctions as well as accept owner surrenders,” said Lilly, current Vice President and Head of Intake. “Then, we rehabilitate them and find them new homes.” At first, Lilly and her two friends were doing this out of their own pockets, but, as Lilly points out, horses are expensive. “We felt that by becoming a 501c3 nonprofit, we could make more impact on the problem.” Lilly stated. “We were gifted a farm on 15A in Lima in 2015, which we have been steadily repairing and renovating.” Still, the need is overwhelming. The rescue farm’s capacity is 14 horses; the rescue currently has 17 and is utilizing foster homes for the overflow. “I am getting 6-8 requests per week,” said Lilly. “We are full, and that doesn’t allow us to address those needs.” This need is growing for a wide variety of reasons. “There are so many owner surrenders: people move, finances change, divorce happens,” Lilly states. “We also work with a number of local humane societies and shelters who have done legal seizures of neglected and abused horses.” Many of these organizations do not have facilities for housing horses. In order for law enforcement to seize a neglected or abused horse, they have to have somewhere to house it; otherwise, they have no choice but to leave the animal. “We want to be there for law enforcement,” said Lilly. “If there is nowhere for these horses to go, then they cannot get the horses into a safe, healthy situation.” Since seizures often involve legal prosecution, these horses tend to have an extended stay. “We have three right now which we accepted in August as part of a neglect case,” said Lilly, explaining that until a decision is reached, these horses cannot be given new homes. Meanwhile, Begin Again cares for these recused horses, several of whom come to them in deteriorating and desperate condition. “We restore them to health, bring them up-to-date with their health care and try to get them adopted,” said Lilly. Begin Again’s adoptions are unique, however. “We do not relinquish ownership of our horses,” explained Lilly. “We put them on permanent lease. This way, if anything happens, our horses will come back to us, ensuring our horses’ safety permanently.” This lifelong relationship also includes yearly checkups on each “leased” horse. Having found new homes for over 200 horses in the last 9 years, this level of commitment does not come cheap “We are 100% funded by donations and fundraisers and the occasional private grant,” said Lilly. “Our yearly operating budget is around $90,000 per year, even though we are completely staffed with volunteers, with the exception of one full-time employee. We used to get
Lilly is no stranger to the positive impact of working with horses, having done charity work bringing horses and people together for over 20 years. “We have most recently worked with the Livingston County Workforce Development Program, SUNY Geneseo, RIT, U of R, and the Livingston County ARC to help people complete volunteer hours, as well as multiple Eagle Scout projects. “We also accept those looking to complete school-based community service and court-ordered community service.” Lilly explains that as a volunteer organization, Begin Again draws from the community, but that they do not currently have enough volunteers to run their own outreach program. “We would like to see more opportunities to benefit groups in our community,” said Lilly, looking to the future. “We go out to events just about every week during good weather with our educational booth and often accompanied by a miniature horse. Our goal is to bring awareness to the neglect taking place with horses.” Lilly explains that one of Begin Again’s long-term goals is to build an education center to hold clinics, educate groups, offer healthcare and more, all free of charge. “We believe education should not come at a cost,” Lilly stated. “We do not ever want a lack of money to stand in the way of good horse care.” “We are also working on being accredited with the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries of which we currently hold a verified status,” said Lilly, explaining that this would improve grant eligibility. This is a highly esteemed standard of excellence for animal refuges worldwide. “One of the requirements is that a property be completely fenced. Our perimeter fencing needs to be upgraded to become stronger and safer. So, this year, we have an ongoing fencing fundraiser with a $7,500 goal. After fencing, we will be very close to accreditation.” Lilly stated that Begin Again holds open volunteer hours every Saturday from 10am-1pm, adding, “Horses are in a more desperate situation than ever before and need help from all of us.” To learn more about Begin Again Horse Rescue and its Tack Shop, visit www.beginagainrescue.org Have something interesting you’d like to share with our readers? We Care About
Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy EARLY CANCER DETECTION An important benefit of regular dental checkups is the potential to save lives by detecting oral cancer early. Each year in the United States about 49,700 new cases of oral cancer are diagnosed, accounting for around 3% of all cancer diagnoses. If cancer has not spread to surrounding tissues, the 5-year survival rates for oral cancer of the lips, tongue, and floor of the mouth range from 75%-93%. These percentages decline if the cancer has spread. Early signs of oral cancer include a white/red patch in the mouth, a sore or ulcer that does not heal or bleeds, tenderness/pain/ lumps anywhere in the mouth or on the lips, and other symptoms that the hygienist and dentist are trained to detect. As part of your healthcare team, BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL is concerned about all aspects of
your health. If a medical condition comes to our attention during a dental exam, you can be sure we will discuss the issues with you as well as any other healthcare provider if you choose. We bring you our dental column as a way to inform our friends and neighbors here in Batavia of the many benefits of professional dentistry. For gentle dental care for the family, please call us at 585.343.4246, 6 Batavia City Centre. P.S. Factors that increase the risk of developing oral cancer include age (the average diagnosis is at 62 years old); tobacco and alcohol use; sun exposure that burns the lips; and gender (men are more than twice as likely to develop oral cancer as women).

women’s heart attacks. I have always heard that symptoms for women can be much different from men’s. Instead of the chest-clutching, sharp pain that men can have, I have read that women’s symptoms can be any of these: heartburn or indigestion; pain in the jaw, neck, shoulders, back, one or both arms; fatigue and troubled sleep; dizziness and nausea; or extreme anxiety. Are you KIDDING me? I am a healthy, active 63-year-old woman. I have had all of these symptoms at one time or another. If I acted every time I had one of these symptoms, I would be at the doctor’s office every day. How is one to know which symptoms to take seriously and act on immediately, and which to wait a few days to see if it is temporary? -- J. ANSWER: I have seen many letters similar to yours. The confusing problem is that it’s true: In women, heart attack symptoms and the symptoms of angina before a heart attack can include all of those vague symptoms. The same is true of men as well, although it’s more likely for women than for men to have symptoms other than the classic left-sided chest discomfort (people are much more likely to describe angina as “discomfort” or “pressure” than “pain”). So your question is entirely valid: How do you know when to take common symptoms seriously? The first thing I would say is that the greater your risk for heart disease, the more seriously you should take any symptom. Age, family history of heart disease, high blood pressure and cholesterol, lack of regular physical exercise and diabetes are among the most important risk factors. The second thing I would say is to take new symptoms seriously. If you never get heartburn, for example, then heartburn at age 63 should prompt concern. Third, context matters. Symptoms such as nausea or jaw pain that occur with exercise -- even carrying a bag of groceries or walking up stairs -- is definitely a reason to talk to your doctor. Most women don’t know that heart disease remains their No. 1 killer, far outstripping breast cancer (or any cancer). Both women and men need to take even vague symptoms seriously, especially if the symptoms are new, exertional or if the person has several risk factors. As a primary-care doctor, I’d rather see my patient for her concerns that symptoms may be heart disease than see her in the ICU with a heart attack.
*** DEAR DR. ROACH: I have diverticulosis. At one time I was told not to eat nuts. I have since read that eating nuts is OK. What is your take? Also, are chia seeds safe? -- E.M. ANSWER: There are two answers to this question. The first comes from clinical research, and a very large trial showed that nut and popcorn consumption tended to protect against diverticulitis and diverticular bleeding. This may be due to the high fiber content, recommended in people with diverticula. So most experts allow their patients with diverticulosis to eat nuts and seeds, including chia seeds. The second is practical experience. If someone has had clinical diverticulitis after eating nuts and seeds, especially if it happens repeatedly, it makes sense not to do so.
*** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2019 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

AVOID INJURIES WHEN WORKING OUT Be patient. Lifting too much weight or pushing yourself too hard on the treadmill, exercise bike or elliptical machine will increase your risk of injury. This is especially true for men and women working out for the first time or after lengthy stretches of inactivity. Men and women who are elderly, inactive and/ or overweight are likely to suffer from poor balance because their muscles are weak. Those muscles can be strengthened over time, but remain patient and stick to light weight during initial workouts so lack of balance does not lead to pain or injury. Take the same approach with aerobic exercise to prevent muscle strains and pulls. Increase weight and the intensity of cardiovascular exercises as muscles gradually strengthen and become accustomed to exercise.

Prepare your car for winter. Start with a checkup that includes: * Checking the ignition, brakes, wiring, hoses and fan belts. * Changing and adjusting the spark plugs. * Checking the air, fuel and emission filters, and the PCV valve. * Inspecting the distributor. * Checking the battery. * Checking the tires for air, sidewall wear and tread depth. * Checking antifreeze levels and the freeze line.
He who marvels at the beauty of the world in summer will find equal cause for wonder and admiration in winter.... In winter the stars seem to have rekindled their fires, the moon achieves a fuller triumph, and the heavens wear a look of a more exalted simplicity. ~ John Burroughs, “The Snow-Walkers,” 1866
Tipping men and women who work in the food service industry is commonplace in the United States and Canada, where citizens typically tip between 15 and 20 percent when dining out at restaurants. But American and Canadian travelers about to depart for overseas destinations may want to familiarize themselves with the practices regarding gratuities before their planes touch down. Some countries automatically add gratuities onto customers’ bills. For example, the government in Dubai mandates that a 10 percent service charge be added to all hotel, restaurant and bar bills. This service charge is then divided by the staff at the establishment, making the charge the equivalent of a tip. Diners in Morocco, where the gratuity is sometimes included in the bill, might be surprised to learn that a 10 percent tip in that country is considered generous. Tips are included in the bill in Costa Rica, where travelers need not feel obligated to leave any additional gratuities. Service is often included in the bill within the United Kingdom as well, though travelers should inspect the bill before assuming gratuity was included. Visitors to Spain should not feel obligated to leave a gratuity larger than 13 percent, and even a tip in the range of 7 percent is considered acceptable.

HOW COUPLES CAN BENEFIT FROM HIRING LOCAL WEDDING VENDORS: Individuals who take great strides to conserve resources by reducing their energy consumption and protecting the environment often find that shopping local is beneficial. Local vendors are more likely to source their materials from other local businesses, reducing their carbon footprints along the way. For example, local caterers may rely on local farmers for their foods, affording couples the chance to host eco-friendly or even farm-to-table weddings.

ELSIE’S STEWED APPLES Serves 6 to 8 2 to 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 pounds apples, peeled, cored and cut into thick slices 1/2 cup honey, preferably sage honey 1/2 cup white wine Zest of 1 lemon Juice of 1 lemon Fresh sage sprigs for garnish 1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the apples, turn the heat to high and sauté until they begin to brown on the edges, about 5 minutes. If some are getting too well done, remove them and place on a plate while the rest continue to cook, then return them to the skillet when all are done. 2. Reduce the heat to low and add the honey, wine, lemon zest, lemon juice, and 1/2 cup water. Cover and allow to cook until the apples are tender but still firm; you don’t want them to turn into applesauce. 3. Serve this in a bowl, tuck in a couple sprigs of fresh sage from your garden, and tell your guests all about sage honey.

• 54 percent of business professionals see golf as the perfect networking tool. • An estimated 90 percent of Fortune 500 CEOs play golf. • Sandra Day O’Connor, Cameron Diaz, Vera Wang, Celine Dion and Condoleezza Rice are all avid golfers. • Golf challenges women to go beyond their comfort zone for personal enrichment and a feeling of accomplishment and confidence. • Playing golf with someone gives you insights into his or her integrity, sportsmanship and personality. Empowering Women to Learn Golf: Lexus Teams Up With the MGA The best way to learn the game is in a supportive stress-free environment, such as a local clinic. Lexus recently hosted clinics throughout the tristate area with the Metropolitan Golf Association to help women gain the basic skills needed to get on the course. (Keep an eye out next season because they plan to host more in spring 2019.) It is important to look for clinics like the Lexus “Introduction to Golf” events that start simple and focus on basics like putting and chipping. You’ll also want an intimate clinic, so you get the one-on-one attention you need as a beginner. If a local pro will be there to speak to the group, even better! It’s great to gain inspiration from those who live and breathe the game. Golf experts such as former LPGA Tour player Tara Fleming; Liz Caron, a member of the winning 2004 U.S. Curtis Cup Team; and Kyla Basso, a highly talented amateur golfer, were present at the Lexus-hosted clinics. Among their advice: 1. Don’t let yourself be intimidated when you step onto the course with clients or colleagues—you’ll do better if you remain confident and calm. 2. Allow yourself time to become familiar with the sport. 3. Don’t expect to be a pro from day one. With a little practice and hard work, you’ll be reaping the benefits of golf in no time!

ness the manager took care of the problem. I guess if this is a rule, parents need to know about it before they pick up cake.
Don’t forget your child’s birth certificate when you go to pick up the “free smash cake” that a local store gives for a child’s 1st birthday with the purchase of a full size cake! Crazy request that my son was not aware of until he went to get the cake for the birthday party. Thank good-
To all the people who let their cats outdoors, please stop. The reasons are simple: your cat can be hurt or even worse killed by - A. Getting hit by a vehicle. B. Poisoned intentionally or by accident. C. Kidnapped and tortured by some horrible individual or for bait in dog fighting or by people who sell them to schools for experiments. D. Hurt or killed by an animal – wild or domestic like a dog or another cat. There are so many dangers outside your cat simply cannot protect itself.
Gotta appreciate the people who walk on the ‘correct’ side which is facing traffic (for a reason!), carry a flashlight and/ or wear reflective clothing as soon as it’s a little dusky, and when there is no sidewalk, move over safely and actually look at their pet dog on a leash to make sure it is safely out of the road! Thank you. Appreciate walkers who know and apply the rules of the road! Wish the lady who was riding her bike ahead of two children...one with training wheels... at dusk almost in the middle of the road would observe others and learn; watch the safe walkers, dog walkers and bikers who really do share the road... not act like ‘king of the road’!! Don’t be an accident victim.

In December, I gave two different neighbors rides to pick up their cars both at dealerships for recalls. Their experiences could not have been different. The first vehicle was in for an emission update due to recent litigation. The service manager was arrogant and accused the government of needlessly creating the problem. The work was not completed and my neighbor was charged $150.00 for diagnostics and was quoted $2400.00 to fix the vehicle so the recall could be completed. The second vehicle needed a new air bag and was at Hoselton Chevrolet. The service personnel were courteous, and the work was finished two hours ahead of time with no charge.
Brighter Side I had an unexpected trip to Highland Hospital by way of Avon Ambulance Squad on the morning of Tuesday, January 29, 2019. I can’t express how much I appreciate the care I received by this group of young people who took such good care of me. I have never had to use this service before but was very grateful that it was available. I have always made yearly donations to this organization and now I know how important this service is. Thank you to Alex, Nick, Ashley, Kelly- you should be so proud of the job you do! Those donations that we make each year are so important for our community. Thankful Always!
Heartfelt thanks to Elizabeth for rescuing me when I was hurt in the road and taking me to the expert staff at York Animal Hospital. I appreciate Jane and Richard helping to fund my care. Thank you, Liam, for welcoming me home again! Felix, the cat with 8 more lives. On Wednesday, February 6 during the ice storm in Batavia, my husband was trying to get me to our car in the parking lot behind the Williams Law Office. A young woman with an umbrella came out of nowhere and took my other arm, shielded me from the rain and assisted my husband with getting me to the car. She apparently could
see we were having difficulty as I must wear a leg brace and on a good day, it is difficult for me to walk. This definitely was not a good day. We did not get her name as she was gone so quickly. So, we would like to thank her the only way we can think of and hope she reads the Penny Saver. We were very grateful for her help. There are still good people who do good deeds. Thank you to the tow-truck driver who stopped to help a small white dog. It was on February 4th at 10am on Clinton St. Rd. outside of Batavia. He tried to find its owner and ended up keeping the dog in his truck. I hope he found its owner. Good job!!
I would like to thank the young cashier at West’s Shurfine in Honeoye for paying for my groceries when my debit card failed to clear! I had gotten gas and had a large hold on my card (1st time that ever happened). I will pay him back, with extra as soon as I get back down there!

STUDY WHAT YOU LOVE—ENTREPRENEURSHIP AS THE PATH TO SUCCESS AND FULFILLMENT (NAPSI)—The United States has long been considered a leader in entrepreneurial pursuits, with everyone from ambitious self-starters to certified moguls making their way here from around the globe to transform dreams into realities. According to the Global Entrepreneurship Development Institute, the United States provides the best environment for cultivating entrepreneurship, ranking first out of 138 countries. On the flip side, however, first-time business owners have only an 18 percent chance of succeeding. So how to bridge the gap between the dreamers and the triumphant? If you’re a student looking for a way to make your passion into your career, you may be glad to learn there’s a college program that can put you on the right path, while also providing you with a classic liberal arts education. The new Entrepreneurship minor course of study at Pennsylvania’s Lycoming College provides a modern approach to a liberal arts education, while preparing students to start a company of their own, to work for another entrepreneurial company or to be more entrepreneurial within a larger company. The program is headed by Marshall D. Welch III, the Sloter Endowed Chair in Entrepreneurship at Lycoming College, who is an accomplished entrepreneur with extensive experience advising and managing organizations, merger integration and emerging growth companies. He also approaches entrepreneurship differently from others. Welch believes that entrepreneurship, at its core, is finding and creating value, and that studying entrepreneurship as an academic discipline helps students learn to be innovative in whatever field they ultimately pursue. In less than one year, Lycoming College’s entrepreneurship classes have become a sought-after, valued addition to many students’ class schedules. The program is built on the notion that any student’s core education, regardless of academic major, can be augmented with the practical knowledge and skills necessary to take a business idea to fruition, such as innovation, digital marketing, intellectual property and financial skills. “My No. 1 objective is to create a world-class experience for students by joining the liberal arts with entrepreneurship,” said Welch. “I believe that the core knowledge of any entrepreneur is first his or her primary field of study, whether that is biology, archaeology, music or any of the other majors at Lycoming. Then add the practical knowledge and skills necessary to help our students become successful entrepreneurs or even work for entrepreneurial companies.” Firmly grounded in the liberal arts, the College has modernized its approach to higher education by offering courses that better prepare students for the 21st century. Still in its infancy, the program is already attracting well-known speakers to campus. Jay Ducote, celebrity chef and restaurateur, who has appeared on Food Network and Travel Channel, recently lectured to the College community on how he followed his passion and took risks on his road to success. “Lycoming is resolute in its mission to offer students a 21st-century education, and I believe our entrepreneurship offerings are an important part of that charge. Thinking deeply and making bold decisions to do something the world has never seen, while also staying true to your passions, accurately describes the students at this institution—a truth that also closely aligns with the principles of entrepreneurship,” said Welch.
