ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You might need to do a bit more investigating before making a career move. You do best when you come armed with the facts. A personal matter still needs tending to. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your creativity plus your good business sense once more combine to give you an important advantage in a difficult workplace situation. An ally proves his or her loyalty. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Avoid rushing into something just because it offers a break from your usual routine. Take things a step at a time to be sure you’re moving in the right direction. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Bouncing back from a disappointing incident isn’t easy, but you should find a welcome turn of events emerging. Spend the weekend with someone special. LEO (July 23 to August 22) An incomplete project needs your attention before someone else takes it over and uses it to his or her advantage. There’ll be lots of time for fun and games once you get it done. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Doubts involving a potential career change need to be resolved quickly so they don’t get in the way when you feel you’re finally ready to make the big move. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Looking to blame someone for a workplace problem could backfire if it turns out you’ve got the wrong “culprit.” Best to get more facts before acting on your assumptions. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Patience might still be called for until you’re sure you finally have the full story that eluded you up till now. A trusted associate could offer valuable guidance. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Look into your recent behavior to see if you could have caused the coolness you might now be sensing from a loved one. If so, apologize and set things straight. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Easing up on your social activities allows you to focus more of your energies on a longneglected personal matter. You can get back into party mode by the weekend. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A dispute with a colleague can be resolved peacefully once you both agree to be more flexible about the positions you’ve taken and allow for more open-minded discussions. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Volunteering to take on added responsibilities could be a risky way to impress the powers-that-be. Do it only if you’re sure you won’t be swept away by the extra workload. BORN THIS WEEK: Your sense of selfawareness allows you to make bold moves with confidence. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Please Join Us In Celebrating Jesus Resurrection From The Dead.

Easter Service Easter Sunday April 21, 9:00am Easter Continental Breakfast; 10am Easter Festival Service First Baptist Church of Batavia 306 East Main Street Main entrance and ample parking behind the church at Liberty and School Street.

THE MEANING OF GOOD FRIDAY Good Friday is a Christian holiday that is celebrated every year on the Friday preceding Easter Sunday. Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary, the location outside of Jerusalem’s walls where the crucifixion took place. Though Good Friday is considered a holiday and is a legal holiday in many countries across the globe, the commemoration is not characterized by the festive atmosphere many holidays inspire. In fact, in the fourth century, the Apostolic Constitutions described Good Friday as a day of mourning and prayer. In addition, many Christians fast on Good Friday, eating only one full meal and two smaller meals that do not add up to a full meal. Christians believe that commemorating the death of Christ helps to remind them of the sacrifices that Christ made and the human sin that contributed to his death. The observance of Good Friday has existed for centuries. According to Catholic Online, the Catholic Church does not celebrate Mass on Good Friday, though church services held on Good Friday correspond to the divisions of a traditional Mass. These services include the Liturgy of the Word, during which the Passion of Jesus Christ is read; the intercessory prayers for all people, including nonChristians; the Veneration of the Cross, during which the crucifix is unveiled to the congregation; and the Holy Communion. During these services, the church organ and bells are silent. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

TECH TO TAKE ALONG ON YOUR NEXT ROAD TRIP Road trips hold a special place in many people’s hearts. The open road and the freedoms it represents have been romanticized by writers and travelers since automobiles became accessible to the masses. While many drivers still take to the road looking for adventure, road trips have changed considerably since Jack Kerouac penned his seminal novel “On the Road” in the 1950s. The spirit of the open road is still there, but the way travelers approach road trips has changed considerably, most notably with regard to the technology that motorists now take along for the ride. Drivers about to embark on a road trip, whether it’s their first such venture or their fiftieth, can make trips even more enjoyable by taking along the right tech.

Murphy. Is That Special Diet Killing Your Dog? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: The trend in pet owners feeding their dogs grain-free diet may have had some unintended consequences. There’s an epidemic of DCM (dilated cardiomyopathy) in dogs across the U.S., one that in many cases may be caused by a deficiency in taurine. The Food and Drug Administration and several veterinary organizations are working to increase the public’s knowledge about the problem. Please let your readers know about this issue so that they can make sure what they’re feeding their dogs contains the right nutrients to keep their dogs healthy. — Liz D., via email

Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

Sponsored this week by:

“Where Your Pet is Part of Our Family” Our goal is to provide compassionate and professional care for our patients and clients.

DEAR LIZ: Thank you for raising awareness about this issue. As dedicated owners search for the best diets to feed their dogs, they are increasingly feeding them “exotic” diets (kangaroo meat and chickpeas, cited in a 2018 Tufts report) or buying dog foods labeled as grain-free. At issue is that some trendy diets, and unfortunately some retail dog foods, lack taurine, an ingredient in meat that is essential to maintaining a healthy heart in dogs. Taurine deficiency alone is not the only cause behind the rise in DCM, which is being seen in dog breeds where it was previously rare. Researchers are working to find additional causes of DCM, and in the meantime recommend that pet owners closely evaluate their pets’ diet. Commercial dog foods should have a good track record of nutritional quality and safety. Home-prepared diets should be supplemented with important nutrients; talk to your vet for exact details. Owners should also keep an eye on their dogs for early signs of heart disease: coughing, weakness, less ability to exercise, shortness of breath or fainting. Take a dog with these symptoms straight to the vet. Send your questions or pet care tips to ask@pawscorner.com. © 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

WEDDING REGISTRY TIPS Don’t hesitate to include expensive items on your registry. Couples also may be hesitant to include especially expensive items on their wedding registries. However, the couples’ parents and other close relatives may be honored to purchase more expensive items, so couples should not feel embarrassed to include them on their lists. It’s also important to note that many retailers, after couples’ wedding days have come and gone, discount registry items that weren’t purchased. So even if no one purchases the more expensive items, including them on a registry may significantly reduce their cost for couples who want to buy such items themselves after tying the knot.

Easter VBS JOIN US! ALL AGES! Monday, April 22nd from 10-2 Songs • Lunch Crafts • Games Batavia First United Methodist Church 8221 Lewiston Rd.

585-343-4708 MAKE EASTER EGGS LAST Families gather on Easter to participate in many different traditions that have been passed down through time. One such tradition is coloring Easter eggs. Millions of eggs are harvested and sold this time of year to be included in Easter festivities. However, soon after egg hunts have been completed and family dinners are brought to the table, those colored eggs may be relegated to the trash. When colored with foodgrade dyes, such as those manufactured and readily available around Easter, the eggs remain safe to eat. Colored eggs that are stored in a refrigerator can last up to a week if their shells remain intact. Peeled eggs may last up to five days, says the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service. Once eggs are boiled and dyed, they should be promptly put into the refrigerator to keep them fresh and edible. It’s adviseable to use plastic, wood or papier-mâché eggs for Easter egg hunts, as eggs made of such materials will not spoil. Otherwise, hide and refrigerate hardboiled eggs if this task can be completed within two hours. After that time frame, the eggs have the potential to spoil. By eating colored eggs, you can reduce waste and add a tasty appetizer to Easter meals.

GOOD FRIDAY Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Jesus was condemned by his peers as King Herod and Pontius Pilate had found him not guilty of his crimes. But crowds were enraged, and Pilate reluctantly ordered his crucifixion rather than face a mass riot.

DID YOU KNOW? Pizza continues to remain a popular comfort food and go-to staple for quick, family-friendly meals. Statistics Brain reports that 93 percent of Americans eat at least one piece of pizza per month. Five billion pizzas are sold worldwide each year, and the United States accounts for three billion of those pizzas. The average person will eat 46 slices of pizza each year. The world can thank Raffaele Esposito for creating the first pizza that resembled the pizza the world knows today. Esposito created the pizza for Italy’s Queen Margherita when she visited Naples in 1889. The crust was garnished with tomatoes, mozzarella and basil to represent the national colors of Italy: red, white and green.

Dining out is big business. A 2016 Consumer Reports survey of more than 68,000 subscribers projected that Americans would spend $720 billion at restaurants in 2016 alone. That equates to nearly half of every food dollar spent in the United States. Dining out is a great way to try new things, experience new cultures without traveling overseas and spend time with friends and family. But men and women who are dieting or trying to gain greater control over the foods they eat may be nervous about dining out. Many restaurants feature nutritious foods that won’t compromise dieters’ goals of eating healthy. Dieters concerned about veering off course when they dine out can take the following steps to stay on course.

Sept. 29-Oct. 4 Vermont/N. Hampshire/Maine - Acadia Nat. Park Oct. 9-15

Memphis/Graceland/Nashville/Grand Ole Opry

Nov. 4-6

Research menus before choosing a restaurant. Apps such as Grubhub and Seamless make it easier than ever for diners to explore menus before booking reservations. Diners can utilize such apps or their corresponding websites to peruse menus so they can rest easy knowing they will ultimately patronize restaurants that won’t compromise their commitments to eating healthy.

Order an appetizer instead of an entrée. Controlling portion sizes can help dieters lose weight and keep the weight off. But many restaurants understandably serve large portions in an effort to ensure their customers get enough to eat and don’t feel cheated when the bill is presented. Dieters worried about entrée portions and their ability to avoid the temptation to eat large portions can order exclusively from the appetizers menu. Appetizers are meant to be shared, so they should be filling when eaten by just one person. And many restaurants’ appetizers menus are just as varied as their entrée offerings. Skip or split dessert. Few people have the time or ability to prepare restaurant-style desserts at home. That makes desserts even more special when dining out. However, dieters may want to skip dessert if the dessert offerings are limited to high-calorie, sugar-laden offerings. Dieters who simply must indulge in dessert can split desserts with fellow diners or opt for low-calorie fare such as fruit. Dining out is incredibly popular, and dieters don’t have to avoid their favorite restaurants.

THE HISTORY OF BOUTONNIÈRES Men wear boutonnières on special occasions, including weddings, religious ceremonies and prom night. At weddings, the groom and his groomsmen typically boutonnières. But some historians believe men have not always worn flowers strictly on special occasions. Some believe the modern-day boutonnière traces its lineage to sporting events in ancient civilizations, including Egypt. During those times, men might have worn certain colored flowers as a show of support for particular participants in sporting events, not unlike how many modern sports fans wear team shirts, jerseys and other attire to display their support for their favorite teams. But according to GentlemansGazette.com, the boutonnières of today likely started appearing just a few centuries ago. A 1771 painting of British Captain William Wade by the artist Thomas Gainsborough depicted Wade wearing a bouquet of flowers in his top buttonhole. And in the 19th century, men’s fashion included coats that folded over the top, revealing the inside of the buttonhole. Boutonnières provided an aesthetically appealing way to cover up that buttonhole.

REJUVENATE YOUR

Mind & Body THIS

Easter

While sometimes focused on bunnies, eggs and candy, Easter can also be a beautifully reflective holiday. Easter observances, originally established by Christians, are held to celebrate Christ’s resurrection, and for many, regardless of their beliefs, this is time for renewal and restoration. This Easter season, try one of these seven renewing activities to refocus and recharge your mind and body.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel On April 23, 1014, Brian Boru, the high king of Ireland, is assassinated by retreating Norsemen shortly after his Irish forces defeated them. A small group of fleeing Norsemen stumbled on Brian's tent, overcame his bodyguards and murdered the elderly king.

A Growing Urgency: Why Boomers Should Prioritize Retirement Care (NAPS)—When thinking about retirement, your main focus may center around not being a burden to your loved ones. In fact, 81% of middle-income Boomers have made at least one formal preparation for when they pass away. However, despite preparing for these expenses, your retirement plan is far from complete. There is one cost that many avoid planning for—retirement care. Just one major expense can shatter your retirement nest egg Retirement care—whether at home or in a facility, due to injury, chronic illness or decline in physical or cognitive function—is an urgent issue that must be addressed. Many factors will impact the amount you should save for retirement care such as age, health care needs and cost of living. This week, it’s National Retirement Planning Week, a great time to develop a plan for retirement that includes retirement care. Here are three steps to help prepare for retirement care. 1. Increaseyourknowledge.Whetheryouplantopayforretirement care with personal savings or government assistance, it’s important to be aware of the costs and the ways to pay for care. For example, while Medicare does not pay for ongoing long-term care, Medicaid may pay for some retirement care expenses depending on your eligibility. 2. Develop a plan. Ideally, your retirement and how much money you should save is something you have thought about years before you retire. Having a realistic financial plan can help you live within your means in this new stage of your life. Considering retirement options can be overwhelming so seeking help from a financial planner can help ease that burden. 3. Communicate your preferences. The time to prepare for retirement care is before you or a loved one becomes ill. It’s important to communicate your preferences to family members about how you would like to receive care in retirement. It’s helpful to include a financial planner in these conversations to provide an unbiased answer to your family’s questions. By sharing your plans, your loved ones will be as financially and emotionally prepared as possible should you need retirement care. It’s never too late to seek help and to better understand your financial plan and current health care coverage to anticipate unforeseen situations in the future.

* On April 25, 1719, Daniel Defoe's "The Life and Strange Adventures of Robinson Crusoe," a fictional work about a shipwrecked sailor who spends 28 years on a deserted island, is published. It's based on the experiences of Alexander Selkirk, a Scottish sailor who spent four years on a small island off South America. * On April 26, 1865, John Wilkes Booth is killed when Union soldiers track him to a Virginia farm 12 days after he assassinated President Abraham Lincoln. Killing Lincoln was part of a conspiracy to simultaneously kill the vice president and secretary of state, neither of which happened.

Iron Overloads Body ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I was hoping that you could answer a quick question. I am a 46-year-old female and have hemochromatosis. I can’t get very good medical care where I live. It’s a small town where I can’t switch doctors, and mine is subpar. Anyway, I just had a blood test, and my ferritin is 39 and my saturation is 0.76. I don’t know if I need a phlebotomy. The doc likes to have me do it when my ferritin is in the 50-75 range. He has NEVER mentioned saturation before. Can you shed some light on this? -- A.R. ANSWER: Hemochromatosis is iron overload caused by the body being unable to reduce iron absorption even when it doesn’t need iron. The high iron saturation is a good test for diagnosing hemochromatosis. However, it’s the ferritin that best approximates total body iron stores. A large proportion of the body’s iron is located in the red blood cells, so by removing these through phlebotomy (literally, “bloodletting” -- usually the blood is donated), iron is taken out of the body. Most experts remove iron through phlebotomy until ferritin levels are below 50. Someone with a ferritin of 39 probably doesn’t need treatment, since the total body iron is nearly normal. Women who are still menstruating have some degree of protection against iron overload, although it certainly still is possible to develop problems if the iron intake is greater than iron output, in which case phlebotomy is necessary. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: My problem is that I am losing my hair.

We Care About ut

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy REPLACING LOST TEETH The National Institutes of Health reports that nearly 30 percent of adults aged 65 years and older have no remaining teeth, as tooth decay and damaging habits such as tooth-grinding (bruxism) take their toll. Not only does this loss adversely affect seniors’ ability to chew, speak, and hold their jaws in alignment, but tooth loss among older individuals has also been linked with mental and physical decline. Consequently, seniors have good reasons to replace missing teeth, and fortunately there are a variety of options. The most affordable of these include complete and partial dentures, which consist of replacement teeth embedded in a gum-colored resin base that is supported by the jawbones or fitted to remaining teeth.

If one or more of your teeth have been lost to damage or decay, prompt attention with dentures, bridges, partials, or other methods of repair will prevent additional, perhaps bigger and more painful problems later on. Visit your dentist on a regular basis, and practice good home oral hygiene. It will pay off in the long run. If you don’t have a family dentist at this time, we invite you to BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, 6 Batavia City Centre. We have convenient office hours by appointment. Call 585.343.4246. P.S. Dental implants may be a good choice for older adults whose teeth closest to the gap caused by the missing tooth are not strong enough to anchor partial dentures.

I am a 63-year-old gal in relatively good health who walks for exercise, eats a healthy, balanced diet and takes a pill each day to manage cholesterol and blood pressure. I do not have a thyroid problem, nor do I have diabetes. My dermatologist told me I do not have alopecia, as some of my siblings do. Instead, he suggested that my hair loss -- and specifically the thinning of the hair on top of my scalp -- is due to heredity; male pattern baldness runs through both sides of my family. So here’s the question: Is it safe and/or effective to take 5,000 mcg of over-the-counter biotin supplements to lessen the effect of hair loss, or is this product ineffective and just being pushed on women by pharmaceutical and vitamin manufacturers to increase sales and profits, and to manipulate the consumer into believing that this expensive vitamin product is essential to our well-being? Thank you. -- C.W.R. ANSWER: Biotin has been studied for both male pattern and female pattern baldness, and has had limited success, especially when combined with other vitamins and nutritional supplements (60 percent effectiveness versus 11 percent in one placebocontrolled trial). It might be worth a try, since it is very safe. As far as expense goes, I found biotin tablets for 6 cents each at an online retailer. It certainly isn’t essential to well-being; in fact, with a healthy diet, I believe no supplement is essential. Vitamin and supplement manufacturers may try to make you think supplements are essential, but there is no good evidence for this. Taking it to try to improve a problem like male-pattern baldness is reasonable, but if it doesn’t help significantly, save your money. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. AVOID ACHES AND PAINS WHEN GARDENING Use ergonomic gardening tools. Ergonomic gardening tools are designed to prevent the types of aches, pains and injuries that can cut gardeners’ seasons short. Gardening injuries can affect any area of the body, but injuries or aches and pains affecting the back, wrists and hands are among the most common physical problems gardeners endure. Look for ergonomic tools that reduce the strain on these areas of the body. Even arthritis sufferers who love to garden may find that ergonomic tools make it possible for them to spend more time in their gardens without increasing their risk for injury.
