UNIQUE MOTHER’S DAY GIFT IDEAS Dining out can be a treat. A meal at a favorite restaurant can be a welcome change from kitchen duty. Mother’s Day is a busy day for restaurants, many of which have limited menus to better handle the crowds. As a result, if dining out on Mother’s Day, Mom may not get the full menu she desires. To ensure mothers have full menus at their disposal, gift givers can cook a meal at home on Mother’s Day and then choose another day of the week to enjoy a meal in an upscale restaurant.

Could the “wimp” who needs an “Energy Shot” every day, please use some of their new-found energy to stop and pick up all the containers that they throw out the window on [local road] near [local] Cemetery? What does it take to get the movie “Unplanned” screened in your theater? I understand you hedged your bets that it would underperform on opening weekend. However, after Unplanned exceeded expectations with an opening weekend of $6.3 million, landing it in 4th place for weekend box office sales, it is still not on your screens for the first week of April. Instead you have continued to carry the 5th and 6th best-selling movies from the weekend. Is this deliberate censorship GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Tinseltown Wednesday Matinee - Thank you, thank you, thank you for handing my misplaced set of keys in to Management on 4/17/19. I didn’t give them a thought until I went to leave the theater after the premiere showing of “Breakthrough.” I was frantic at the thought that my keys were not with me. Once I thought it through, I checked where I got popcorn and they had been turned in. I was in tears AND I will pay it forward! Thank you again! of a pro-life movie or simply bad business practices? If it is a result of bad planning, I hope that, in the future, you would know your audience better and show movies that support life, family, marriage, hope and God. It is certainly better than the average garbage put out by Hollywood on a monthto-month basis. I use the local library often. I grew up respecting that others are there reading and studying. However, I can’t seem to find a time of day to go where it is ever quiet. In the morning, mothers are there with their little ones who are understandably running and/or screaming. Thank you to the moms who do take their screaming little ones to the foyer. Still, I wish speaking quietly with one another

Soucy, Mike Raynard and Rob Welch. Thank you one and all for your support! Monies go towards Scholarships for Avon Seniors. Avon Lioness Club, In Service to our Community On Saturday, April 13th, the Town of Riga held its annual Easter Egg Hunt at Sanford Road Park. Egg Hunters from 1 to 10 years of age hunted for over 4,000 eggs and the “Special Eggs.”When the hunting was finished the following boys and girls found the “special” eggs… 1 to 5 years: Gold Egg – Myah Hanrahan, Blue Egg – Antonio Hernandez, Purple Egg – Maya Christopher. 6 to 10 years: Gold Egg – Jared
was still practiced. Then, on two different evenings, two different couples spoke very candidly at the computer area, one young man dropping obscenities every other word. So many people also use their cell phones as if no one else is around! Please respect those who are at the library for the purpose of reading and studying! Would you carry on like this in a theatre? Could we all look both ways when entering an intersection and treat stop signs like stop signs? I’m tired of being the eyes for other drivers who disobey. For example, a nice adult woman didn’t stop and nearly hit me. I beeped my horn and put my hands up in air, thankful I didn’t get hit. She then flipped me off. I pulled up to her to explain

myself; she flipped me off again. Great human being and dangerous driver. [Local town], be careful of an ignorant woman who only speaks with her hands like a rude teenager. It was a real surprise to receive the letter from your insurance agent to pay for the damage to your car when you ran over and killed our dog in front of our 7-year-old son in a 30mph zone. Can’t thank you enough to allow us to relive the horror you inflicted on our family. I guess you ran out of salt for our wounds. Nice to know more about the people who live in our neighborhood. Basket Raffle, Live band, bake sale, 50/50 and food • Food until 6:30 pm or sold out • Basket drawings at 7pm (winner does not need to be present for drawing.) Please come out and join us in a fundraiser for Chase in his battle with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML). Chase is a 14 year old boy who was just recently diagnosed with CML. CML is a form of leukemia which starts in the bone marrow where cell production is started. In CML cell formation is altered and doesn’t allow for normal blood cells to be made. These abnormal cells over produce and crowd out normal cells making it difficult for the body to perform normal everyday tasks. Chase will need to be on oral medication at this point and will have frequent visits to Roswell throughout his life. Chase is a great kid who is known for being kind and a friend to people he meets. He has been recognized by his teachers and was most recently named Student of the Month. When not involved in his school activities, Chase can mostly be found on the basketball courts where he not only plays but supports the varsity team. Any support from the community to help lessen the burden for the family is greatly appreciated. Donations for food at door. Please have basket donations to Lisa or Elaine by May 10th please. Brockport Professor Earns Global Fulbright Award By Amanda Dudek
D
r. Lauren Lieberman, a distinguished service professor at the College at Brockport has been a part of the Brockport community for 24 years, and she has run Jennifer & Kiersten, Camp Abilities Camp Abilities for 23 of them. Camp Abilities, a one-week educational sports camp for children and teens who are blind, visually impaired, and deafblind, felt like a natural next step for co-founder Lieberman. This year, her vision and hard work have earned her the Global Fulbright Award. Having taught for several years at the Perkins School for the Blind, Dr. Lieberman, who currently teaches physical and adapted physical education in Brockport’s Kinesthesiology Department, said that while all disabilities are important, helping kids with visual impairments is her passion. “Years ago, we did not have a program for them,” she said. “So, in 1996, I started Camp Abilities, and we have served 150 children with visual impairments every year since then.” Quickly, Camp Abilities had more camp applicants than it has space. “People were sending their children from other states,”said Dr. Lieberman. This led to the founding of Camp Abilities educational sports camps in other states. “In 2001, we started a Camp Abilities in Alaska,” said Dr. Lieberman. “We have continued starting camps in other states, and even countries, since then.” Receiving the Global Fulbright award, an honor given to those whose work around the globe supports understanding between the United States and other countries, offers Camp Abilities a tremendous opportunity. “The Fulbright award is given to both professors and college students,” explained Dr. Lieberman. “It is not easy to receive, but if you do, you obtain comprehensive funds to continue your work in two or three other countries” “I want to get Camp Abilities on other continents!” Dr. Lieberman exclaimed. “Right now, many people have to come to Brockport to see Camp Abilities in action. My award proposal was to start a Camp Abilities on three different continents, reducing travel time and expenses significantly.” Thanks to the Global Fulbright Award, Dr. Lieberman’s vision for Camp Abilities is about to take a giant leap forward. “This coming fall I will be going to Ghana, Ireland and Brazil to start camps in those countries,” she said, describing the reaction in Ghana when she shared her Camp Abilities plans last year. “They are very excited about starting this.” “All too often, people with visual impairments around the globe are treated like second-class citizens,” Dr. Lieberman continued. “Sports is one way to value them and showcase what they do. It is a very relatable medium.” According to Dr, Liberman, Camp Abilities camps have been started in Portugal, Costa Rica, Puerto Rico and Canada. “Seeing the benefits of Camp Abilities helps communities to understand and value it, making them much more likely to start their own.” Sports instruction at Camp Abilities is unique. Group sports instruction does not work well for a child is blind or visually impaired. Instead, one-to-one, tactile teaching is offered. Each class has sports specialists. be physical education teachers, teachers of the visually impaired as well as those interested in physical and adapted physical education work at the camp each year. “Teaching and including children with visual impairments is not something these students would normally learn in college,” Dr. Lieberman shared. She explains that this is why Camp Abilities also equips visiting children Sports is one way to to advocate for/and take value these children a leadership role in their own inclusion. “These and showcase what children often have to they do!show others how to teach them,” she said. Dr. Lauren Lieberman, “Our tools and methods Camp Abilities Director help make inclusion successful.” “One of my biggest goals is to continue to help start other camps, giving these children the camp experience,” said Dr. Lieberman, who has written a Camp Abilities start-up manual. “These camps won’t work unless you are purposeful in making all of the sports accessible,” she explained. “These children, ages 9-19, stay at the camp for an entire week. It is important to create camps that are safe for them.” Meanwhile, many exciting events are still ahead. “Five students and their P.E. teacher will be visiting us to learn how to set up Camp Abilities this summer,” Dr. Lieberman said. “Next weekend, we are hosting a deafblind family weekend here in Brockport. College students and I will be working with the New York State Deafblind Collaborative in New York City for this event.” In June, Dr. Lieberman and Camp Abilities will also hold a camp in the Catskills for children from Orthodox families. “We are very inclusive,” she added. In addition, Dr. Lieberman will be coordinating an International Symposium on Physical Activity and Visual Impairment in conjunction with the Scottish Sensory Center to be held at the University of Scotland in Edinburgh. She enthused, “People from 27 countries will be learning and sharing through sports with people who are visually impaired.” For more information, visit the Camp Abilities website at www. campabilities.org. There is just something about May! The long winter is (hopefully) starting to become a distant memory. The weather is improving and I can work in the yard. The golf course is finally open for the season. There is a feeling of life and excitement with every new bloom that opens and lawn mower I hear starting up. It is in May that I have a heart filled with appreciation for all that is meaningful in the world. Mother’s Day is May 12th. It is fitting that we have a day devoted to our mothers when we are in such high spirits. For it is our mothers who first got us to appreciate the little things in life. It is our mothers who made us feel loved and to enjoy the beauty of a sunny day and it is our mothers who gave us the drive and confidence to become all that we have become in this world. So, if you are like me and have gotten caught up in the hustle and bustle of life and have forgotten to thank your mother, wife, grandmother and all the other important women in your life for all they have done, today is the day to express your love. So, this Mother’s Day go ahead and open up your own heart, whether it is in memory, or by sharing time with those you love! $1.00 OFF your next purchase with a copy of this ad. My Mother’s hands, so thin and work-worn, Were loved by me as jewels, rare, For they had rocked me in my cradle, And, lovingly, they’d stroked my hair. They worked for me, both night and morning; They helped to smooth away my fears, For never were these dear hands idle; I think of them with love and tears! My Mother’s hands to me were precious: I thought their beauty was sublime; I felt no harm on earth could touch me If they were near me all the time! ~Gertrude Tooley Buckingham, “My Mother’s Hands” (1940s)

Servings: 10 cup Apple Butter cup maple syrup teaspoon red pepper flakes teaspoon salt teaspoon smoked paprika pieces bacon extra-large shrimp, cleaned and deveined chopped cilantro, for garnish (optional) Heat oven to 400 F. Line rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. In medium-sized skillet over medium heat, add apple butter, maple syrup, red pepper flakes, salt and paprika. Whisk until mixture is thick and cooked down by half, about 10 minutes. Set aside. In large skillet over medium heat, add bacon slices and cook until browned but still flexible. Remove from pan and drain on paper towel-lined plate. Wrap one bacon slice around each shrimp, secure with toothpick and place onto prepared baking sheet. Once all shrimp have been wrapped, baste tops with apple butter mixture. Bake 5 minutes then flip and baste other side of shrimp. Bake another 5 minutes. Continue to flip and baste shrimp (2 minutes each time) until shrimp is fully cooked. Do not overcook as glaze can burn. Sprinkle with cilantro, if desired. 3/4 1/2 1/2 1/2 1/2 10 10

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On May 6, 1954, in Oxford, England, 25-year-old medical student Roger Bannister cracks track and field’s most notorious barrier: the four-minute mile. Bannister won the mile race with a time of 3:59.4.
What You Need To Know About Heart Valve Disease (NAPS)—More than 8 million American adults have a condition known as heart valve disease (HVD). While it can be managed, too many people who have HVD don’t know it. To help that situation, the American Heart Association, with support from Edwards Lifesciences Foundation, answers seven frequently asked questions. 1. What is HVD? In HVD, heart valves don’t work as they should. A heart valve should open one way and seal tight when closed. Sometimes, either due to congenital heart defects, side effects of cancer treatment, or secondary heart disease, the valve allows leaks, putting a strain on the heart and prohibiting proper circulation of blood. 2. Who’s at risk? HVD can happen to anyone at any age, but the risk increases with age and in those with congenital heart valve defects or who have had a heart attack, rheumatic fever, hypercholesterolemia, or an infection in the lining of the heart walls or valves. These individuals should speak frequently with their health care providers about HVD. Currently, HVD prevalence is greater in older Caucasians, though African Americans and Hispanics tend to have lower ideal heart health levels, which can lead to HVD. 3. Is HVD preventable? No, but it can be managed through a healthy lifestyle including proper nutrition, exercise, not smoking, weight management and medication. Most people who get treatment experience improved symptoms and can continue to live longer, healthy lives. 4. What are the signs and symptoms? • Shortness of breath • Feeling easily fatigued • Swollen ankles or feet • Heart palpitations (rapid rhythms or skips) • Chest tightness or pressure. Symptoms can be subtle and are often attributed to aging or other diseases. If you experience any of these, see your doctor. 5. What treatments are available? The heart valve can be repaired, or replaced with an artificial one. 6. Who can help? There’s a group of volunteer ambassadors comprised of heart valve disease survivors and caregivers who represent the face of heart valve disease in America. They work to raise awareness about heart valve disease and share available resources for patients and families. You can connect with them at sharefromheart.heart.org. 7. Where can one learn more? You can get further information from the American Heart Association at sharefromheart.heart.org.
• On May 10, 1877, President Rutherford B. Hayes has the White House's first telephone installed, although he rarely received phone calls. In fact, the Treasury Department possessed the only other direct phone line to the White House at that time. The White House phone number was "1." • On May 12, 1949, an early crisis of the Cold War comes to an end when the Soviet Union lifts its 11-month blockade of West Berlin. The blockade had been broken by a massive U.S.-British airlift of supplies to West Berlin's 2 million citizens.
When caught early, heart valve disease can be treated to help you have a longer, healthier life. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

HOW TO MAINTAIN MENTAL ACUITY Stay socially connected. Maintaining social connections with family, friends and community members also can help women prevent cognitive decline. Epidemiologist Bryan James of the Rush Alzheimer’s Disease Center studied how social activity affected cognitive decline, ultimately noting that the rate of cognitive decline was considerably lower among men and women who maintained social contact than it was among those with low levels of social activity.

Once upon a time, there was an airline named Pan Am. Pan Am bought a very special plane from Boeing called the 747SP - the “SP” stood for “special performance.” Indeed, when it first took flight in 1975, this plane - though not as big as other planes - could go faster and farther than all other commercial airliners. Only forty-five of these special planes were ever produced. One of them was named “Charles Lindbergh” after the ultra-famous aviator, and flew its passengers between New York, London and Hong Kong. But fate had in store something even more special for this quick little plane...
Fill in the Missing Letter
To Infinity and Beyond! On January 7th, 2019, mankind learned a little more about how stars are born. No, I’m not talking about Lady Gaga! I’m talking about literal stars, born in stellar nurseries. What did we learn? When a star is born, a great wind called feedback is produced that blows away all the other baby stars surrounding it. This was a big surprise, because, until now, scientists believed that only the very oldest stars, called supernovae, had any effect on the formation of new stars. Turns out the very youngest stars matter, too!
SOFIA Word
Search Sofia Observatory Plane Stars Stellar Supernovae Telescope Stratosphere Nebula
How was this discovered? Remember that little plane? After it was retired from commercial flight, NASA purchased it and turned it into SOFIA, or the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy. Now, instead of carrying passengers to see distant lands, the SOFIA carries a 45,000 lbs. telescope that takes us closer to the stars. In order to do this, the SOFIA needed to make some major changes. Instead of flying around 30,000 feet like it had always done, the SOFIA had to fly up into the stratosphere - up to 45,000 feet! Why? The air up in the stratosphere is extremely dry, meaning there is no water vapor to form clouds that block the view of things like stellar nurseries, nebulae, or black holes that the SOFIA sees with its infrared light. This is how the SOFIA was able to investigate the birth of stars in - By Nicole Karam our closest stellar nursery, the Orion Nebula. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

ROOFING & SIDING
Stripe smut The University of Maryland Extension notes that stripe smut primarily poses a threat to Kentucky bluegrass that is older than three years. Pale green streaks that run parallel to the veins in the leaves and leaf sheaths are symptomatic of stripe smut, which tends to be noticed in spring and fall, when weather is cool. As the disease progresses, stripes turn black or a silvery gray, causing the leaf blade to shred and curl. After the blades have shred, they turn brown and die. The grass thins because stripe smut makes it vulnerable to problems like drought.

DID YOU KNOW? Broadening one’s horizons through crafting can be a worthwhile pursuit. Crafting can serve as a relaxing pastime and provide an opportunity to learn rewarding skills. Learning to crochet is one way for men and women to combine creativity and practicality. Crochet is a form of handwork using yarn and a crochet hook. According to the Crochet Guild of America, there’s no way to know just how old the art of crochet is. However, crochet expert Annie Potter has said the modern form of the art originated in the 16th century, primarily in France and England. Others surmise crocheting traces its origins to Arabia before it spread westward through various Mediterranean trade routes.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) This is a good week to look at healing bruised feelings and re-establishing weakened relationships. It’s also a good week to start new projects and make new job-linked contacts. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Music and art dominate the week, giving the sensual Bovine a lot to appreciate. On the practical side, deal firmly, but fairly, with those who might try to undermine your work efforts. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Good feelings continue to flow from your recent efforts to reconnect with family and friends. But be ready to defuse a dispute before it can disrupt all that peace and harmony. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A practical view of a romanticized situation could help to clarify some of its more confusing aspects before you make a decision that could be tough to undo later on. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Pay more attention to what a recent spate of workplace criticism might say about your performance and not what you think it implies about you personally. Some flexibility might be called for. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) With new information, and new promises of support (not to mention growing selfconfidence), this could be a good time to restart a project you couldn’t quite handle before. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Before you decide to close down a problem-loaded project and make a fresh start with someone else, try once more to reach a compromise with your balky partner. He or she might surprise you. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) While you continue earning points for your sharp negotiating skills, be alert for an attempt to undercut your efforts. You’ll need to provide solid facts and figures to stay in the game. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A minor health problem might cause you to ease up on your usually busy schedule. But you’ll soon be back in the saddle and ready to pick up the reins and charge ahead. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) The adventurous Sea Goat might be eager to take on a new challenge. But before you do, you might want to take some time to check out previously overlooked factors. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A feeling of being overwhelmed by all that you have to do can be eased by setting priorities. Deal with the most urgent and time-sensitive situations first, and then work down the line. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Creating a calm, peaceful place for yourself in the middle of a roiling emotional whirlpool this week starts when you, and no one else, decide how to make decisions about your life. BORN THIS WEEK: Your determination to stick with your principles wins the admiration of everyone who knows you.
It was one of those March days when the sun shines hot and the wind blows cold: when it is summer in the light, and winter in the shade. ~ Charles Dickens, Great Expectations

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
B-12 Shot Paralyzes Arm
Louis Baumann, M.D.
---
DEAR DR. ROACH: Two years ago at my yearly physical, my doctor said I was low on vitamin B-12 and that the only way to increase it was through a shot in the arm. I received my first shot that day, and my arm was paralyzed for four days. I went in a week later for my second shot, only to have the same thing happen again. I didn’t get any more shots. It still hurts to this day, even though an MRI shows nothing wrong. The specialist says it was just coincidence. I cannot hold my arm over my head or stretch it out. What’s your take? -- D.R. ANSWER: Well, I don’t believe it was just coincidence. Nerve damage following injection is extremely rare, but it sounds like what you are describing. This can be due to direct trauma to the nerve by the needle, or by an inflammatory reaction. The treatment is physical therapy, but unfortunately for you, it works best if begun right away. I still think it is worth your while, however. Also, vitamin B-12 deficiency absolutely can be treated with oral vitamin B-12. Although pernicious anemia, the most common form of vitamin B-12 deficiency, is due to poor B-12 absorption, this can be overcome simply by giving much more B-12 than the body usually needs. A dose of 1 mg daily by mouth is a safe, inexpensive and effective treatment for vitamin B-12 deficiency. Many of my patients still want the injection, however, even though it seems inexplicable to me.

DEAR DR. ROACH: Yesterday, while walking barefoot in my back yard, I stepped on a bee. This has happened to me before, and it seems that each time the results are a little worse. After I removed the stinger from the underside of one of my toes, I put ice on the sting and took a Benadryl. Since this happened in the evening, I was able to elevate my leg for the rest of the night. In the morning, the area was swollen, red, hot and painful. Now, after my usual three-mile morning power walk, the swelling and soreness is spreading up my foot. I am notorious for going barefoot and stepping on bees. I just know this will happen again. Do you have any suggestions for what might help prevent a bee sting from going “viral”? ANSWER: Your best bet is not to get stung in the first place, which for you means not stepping barefoot where bees might be. It’s particularly important for you, as local reactions to bee stings do tend to get worse over time. Fortunately, they do not usually predict the life-threatening anaphylactic reaction. Once stung by a bee, remove the stinger, within seconds if possible, since the venom can continue to be released for several seconds. The local reaction usually lasts less than a day in most people, but it can last up to five days. The reason the swelling and soreness spread after your walk is that the exercise and increased blood flow to the area allowed the venom to move to different areas, and the inflammatory response also progressed. I would recommend that you continue cold compresses and avoid your power walks for at least another day or two after a sting. ***

We Care About ut
Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy TOOTHPASTE SELECTION When selecting the right toothpaste to meet your needs, begin by looking at its fluoride content. Numerous studies confirm that fluoride in drinking water is a safe and effective way to protect tooth enamel and prevent cavities. Next, check for the American Dental Association (ADA) seal of acceptance, which confirms that the toothpaste meets the ADA’s strict requirements for containing fluoride and active ingredients to improve oral hygiene, is free of flavoring agents that contribute to tooth decay (such as sugar), and has scientific evidence to support that it is safe and effective. It is important to note as well that participation in the ADA program is voluntary, and not all good toothpaste brands will carry the seal. Carefully performed home oral hygiene can be the deciding factor
in keeping your mouth and teeth healthy. At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL, we’ll be happy to tell you about products we know will help you maintain a healthy smile between routine dental checkups as well as demonstrate good brushing and flossing techniques. For an appointment for family dental care, please call us at 585.343.4246. Our full-service dental office is conveniently located at 6 Batavia City Centre. We accept most insurances. P.S. It is the mechanical action of brushing teeth with a bristled brush that is mostly responsible for removing plaque from teeth. Toothpaste can contribute to the effect by adding breathenhancing additives and fluoride.

Extend the life of your vehicle: Scale back on short trips. The toll cold starts take on a vehicle can add up over time. When a car is started, condensation builds up in the vehicle’s exhaust system. On longer trips, that condensation will gradually evaporate. However, on short trips, that condensation often does not have enough time to evaporate, and over time too many short trips will lead to an accumulation of water in the muffler that can lead to rust and rust holes on the muffler. Short trips also can negatively affect gas mileage. When possible, leave your car at home on trips into town when you can just as easily walk or ride a bicycle. Over time, reducing the amount of short trips you take in your car will greatly reduce wear and tear on your vehicle and improve your fuel efficiency as well. BATAVIA EDITION

Cost: W hile cost should not be the only consideration w hen choosing a family vehicle, parents must determine their budget before beginning their search for a new ride. Aside from a home, cars are the most expensive purchase many people w ill ever make, w hich only highlights the importance parents must place on finding the right vehicles for their families. Luxury cars, SUVs and sports cars tend to be the most expensive vehicles on the market, and young parents just starting out or parents of school-aged kids w ith college educations to consider might find that less expensive vehicles make the most practical sense for their families. Parents also must determine if they are financing or leasing their vehicles or buying them outright. Financing and leasing often requires full insurance coverage, w hich can be pricey, w hile buying outright affords vehic le ow ners to c hoose the level of c overage they are most comfortable w ith. Determine insurance costs on a given model before driving off the lot w ith the pedal to the metal.

What constitutes “ethnic” food differs from person to person. Someone of Italian descent may dine regularly on garlic-infused pasta dishes, while a person from another area of the world may find such foods exotic. In the cultural melting pot of North America, various cuisines representing countries that span the globe are within arm’s length for many people. According to Technomic, a Chicago-based research firm, 77 percent of Americans enjoy ethnic foods while dining out once a month. Around 38 percent order ethnic food weekly. In addition, many more people prepare ethnic cuisine at home. A growing interest in ethnic foods is fueled by young people. Technomic notes that millennials are more apt to want to try various cuisines and then incorporate them into their regular dining experiences. The National Restaurant Association found that 60 percent of people are likely to “tie their favorite ethnic food to their family history.” Interest in ethnic foods tends to be highest in urban areas where restaurants and ingredients may be more readily available. When it comes to the top ethnic cuisines enjoyed throughout the states or provinces and territories, Chinese, Mexican and Italian rally for the top spots on diners’ plates. While the NRA has Italian cuisine as earning topbilling, Technomic’s list says that Chinese food, at 76 percent, followed by Mexican food (74 percent) and Italian (71 percent) comprise the biggest ethnic draws. Japanese or sushi comes in a distant fourth at 32 percent in the United States.
June 11 - Don’t miss the “Rambin’ Lou Family Band” appearing for the 50th anniversary of the M&T Bank summer events 12-1pm downtown Buffalo. The statistics portal Statista indicates that, as of January 2015, Chinese, American and Italian foods are quite popular in Canada. However, the percentage of people who cook these foods as opposed to eating them out at a restaurant varies. Chinese food is most widely enjoyed in a restaurant setting, while Italian food is frequently whipped up at home. As immigration tides change, ethnic cuisine may change with them. However, interest in experiencing ethnic dining is likely to remain consistent. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DID YOU KNOW? Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts from Money, CNN and The Motley Fool advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures. EMPLOYMENT
