Book lovers also can channel their passions for the written word into a rewarding hobby. While reading might not seem like the most social activity, readers who want to use their love of books to grow their social networks can start a book club. People of all ages and backgrounds love to read, so starting a book club can be a great way to meet an array of people. Readers also can call their local libraries or schools to ask about reading programs for children. Volunteer to read to youngsters, helping the next generation discover the wonders of reading.

HEMP HAS SIGNIFICANT HEALTH BENEFITS FOR PETS (NAPSI)—NaturVet’s veterinarian-formulated pet supplements have progressed over the last 25 years to keep up with the ever-changing needs of pet parents. NaturVet’s newest Hemp for Health product line includes four top products—Allergy, Calming, Immune and Joint— that are now available enhanced with Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder, sharing the same great original base formulas that pet parents have relied on for years. Although marijuana and hemp come from the same cannabis family, the plants are completely different in function, cultivation and application. Hemp is grown specifically for agricultural purposes and has been used for hundreds of years in textiles, body care products, paper products, industrial products and building materials. Most importantly, hemp is nonpsychoactive and cannot get your pet high. Hemp has significant health benefits for pets. Hemp is high in fiber; a great source of plant-based protein; is rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids; and contains phytonutrients, antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and 20 amino acids. Hemp Seed Oil and Hemp Seed Powder work synergistically with other active ingredients to help provide support for allergies, stress and anxiety, joints, aches and discomfort, the immune system, and overall health and wellness. For more information on NaturVet products, please visit www.NaturVet.com or call (888) 628-8783.

PROM SEASON! Batavia Tuxes, Stagecoach Florist Corsages & 26 Batavia City Centre • 344-1283 Boutonnieres! bataviastagecoachflorist.com TRY A TASTE OF HISPANIC HERITAGE (NAPSI)—National Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to acknowledge the history, culture and contributions of the people of Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Spain. One of the best ways to celebrate, many say, is with food. Making that easy is one restaurant chain that’s having a year-round love affair with Latin and Hispanic cuisine. Long known for its authentic Tex-Mex roots, Church’s Chicken®/Texas Chicken® has spent years championing the commemorative period—which runs from September15 to October 15th—on a global stage. The first Hispanic influence on the company’s menu was the jalapeño pepper—the very first side item ever offered at the restaurant chain. The peppers were added to the menu due to a San Antonio tradition of squeezing their juice over various foods to give them a south-of-theborder style “kick” of heat and spice. The restaurant’s sister brand, Texas Chicken, features the Mexicana Burger on menus worldwide. This tasty chicken burger is a fiesta of tastes and textures, with a juicy hand-battered chicken breast fillet that’s topped “taco style” with cheese, fresh lettuce, tomato, spicy mayo, crunchy tortilla chips and chopped onions. Learn More: For further facts and to see a menu and a map of the nearest location, go to www.churchs.com.

TACKLING THE ULTIMATE WORKFORCE CHALLENGE (NAPSI)—Today, many people in business talk of diversity fatigue, says Barbara Adams, PsyD, author of “Women, Minorities, & Other Extraordinary People: The New Path for Workforce Diversity” (Greenleaf Book Group Press). But, she adds, that means “we’ve momentarily lost sight of the magnitude of opportunity before us.”

INTERIOR PAINTING

Her book can serve people in leadership positions who recognize, “the tremendous strategic value of having diverse, inclusive workforces,” but have struggled to commit to it. For all the many well-meaning diversity initiatives that organizations have undertaken lately, “personal mindsets and beliefs are what count,” she writes. “People in leadership positions,” Dr. Adams adds, “have the ability to replace judgment and bias that naturally occur in us with curiosity about differences.” And that, she concludes, is “truly the beginning of embracing the opportunity that lies in workforce diversity and inclusion” and can make companies and organizations more successful.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You might be tempted to be more assertive when dealing with a job-related matter. But a carefully measured approach works best at getting the cooperation you’re looking for. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) While others urge you to act now, you instinctively recognize that a move at this time is not in your best interests. You should know when to do so by week’s end. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A busy schedule keeps you on the move for much of the week. But things ease up by the time the weekend arrives, allowing you to reconnect with family and friends. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Travel dominates the week, and despite some delays in getting to where you want to go, the overall experience should prove to be a positive one in many ways. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Your Leonine selfconfidence comes roaring back after a brief period of doubt and helps you get through a week of demanding challenges and ultimately emerge triumphant. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Virgos who have made a major commitment -personal or professional -- should be able to tap into a renewed reservoir of selfconfidence to help them follow through. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You soon could receive news from a surprising source that could cause you to change your mind about how you had planned to deal with an ongoing job-related problem. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A surprise move of support from a colleague who has never been part of your circle of admirers helps influence others to take a new look at what you’ve put on the table. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) While a bold decision to take an “I know what I’m doing” approach impresses some colleagues, it also raises the risk of causing resentment among others. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A misunderstanding ‘twixt you and a friend might not be your fault at all, despite what he or she suggests. Talk it out to see at what point the confusion might have started. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Getting into a community operation fulfills the Aquarian’s need to help people. It also can lead to new contacts that might one day help you with a project. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A minor problem could delay the start of a longanticipated trip for two. Use the time to recheck your travel plans. You might find a better way to get where you’re going. BORN THIS WEEK: You are a dedicated romantic who seeks both excitement and stability in your relationships. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Oh, Baby! Boutique Now Open in Oakfield By Amanda Dudek

O

h Baby! Boutique of Oakfield celebrated a very successful first day on Tuesday, April 16th! The shop is completely open to the public and was flowing with people from noon until after 7pm. “We carry adorable pre-loved items for baby - preschool age and Maternity, as well as gear, toys and supplies,” said Jenny Staebell, owner of Oh Baby! Boutique and founder of Project Stork. “We also carry over 100s of new items too.”

what is happening in their lives, supporting them throughout their pregnancies as well as afterwards.” “It is huge to continue to be there for them as they raise and nurture their children,” Jenny said. “That’s one of the times they need us the most.” Jenny emphasized the importance of the Oh Baby! Boutique bonds she forms with welcomes everyone, the young moms at Project Stork. “I am and its proceeds currently training to benefit moms in need. become a doula, so I offer to help during - Jenny Staebell the births at no cost. I am happy to be learning the best possible ways to support these young ladies.” Clothes, toys, decor and more at Oh Baby! Boutique.

“I decided to just dive right in!” exclaimed Jenny. “I hope the momentum carries on.” Jenny emphasized that the boutique is for all moms. “The shop is for everyone. It is the proceeds that benefit moms in need,” said Jenny. “This is a super mom-friendly place. We offer great items at low cost, and the proceeds go back into Project Stork, so it is a win/win.” Oh Baby! Boutique will help Project Stork support young mothers. “We also offer free monthly mini classes on Tuesdays,” said Jenny. “I offer the same classes at 11:30am as a I do at 6:30pm, so that hopefully all moms will be able to attend.” The first Tuesday is Storytime for Toddlers with space for 5 child participants at a time. “Last Tuesday, we had a little Easter Egg Hunt along with our story time,” noted Jenny. The second Tuesday is Childcare Basics which covers such things as nursing, bathing, swaddling and saving breastmilk. On the third Tuesday, Jenny offers a Breastfeeding Q & A time. “I am a certified lactation counselor,” said Jenny. “In the evening, we are joined by Jadriene Baldulf from UMMC, who is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC).” On the fourth Tuesday, Oh Baby! Boutique hosts a meet-and-greet for moms; everything is 10% during this time. “I will also be holding two private, paid classes here: Sibling Preparation and 4th Trimester Preparation,” Jenny said. The revenue from Oh Baby! Boutique will support Project Stork, Staebell’s charitable organization which supports young mothers in need. “We are working with young moms ages almost 16-23, some who are pregnant, some parenting and others parenting and pregnant,” explained Jenny. “One young lady is about to graduate high school a year early; we’re paying for her prom dress. Another of our young ladies has a full time job and had not finished high school. Going back to school is really not an option, nor is trying to get a GED while working full time and parenting. So, we are paying for a web-based program so that she can get her diploma online.” These are just some examples of Project Stork supporting young mothers.

Six months ago, Jenny Staebell also founded the Genesee Orleans Breastfeeding Coalition. “There was nothing in our area; we needed something here,” said Jenny. She knew she needed to act. “So, I reached out to Jadriene at the Women’s UMMC,” she explained. “She said, ‘Let’s go for it!’” Jenny laughed. “She is fantastic.” Coalition board members include Jenny Staebell, jadriene Baldulf, another nurse, a school principal, a few local moms and Stephanie Kahn, Coordinator for the Orleans & Genesee County WIC. The coalition also maintains a very active Facebook page where breastfeeding moms can find help and encouragement. At this time, the GOBC has two primary goals. “First, we are working to establish breastfeeding guidelines for daycare centers and other childcare providers. We would like to teach them how to handle breastmilk properly, including how to store it, warm it, even what temperature the refrigerator should be for it,” explained Jenny. The GOBC’s second goal is to find more locations around the two counties who are breastfeeding friendly. “When a business identifies as breastfeeding friendly, it is letting breastfeeding moms know that they are welcome to feed their babies in that space,” Jenny shared. The GOBC provides window decals for interested businesses. Have something interesting you’d like to share with our readers? Perhaps an original story, a personal experience, community happening, or school event? Add some photos, and your story will be featured on our popular website for all to see. “Having this boutique here really supports all that we are able to do for these young moms,” Jenny stated, “Including the space we opened in Albion and our donation closet there where young ladies in need can select items for their babies. The girls get monthly supplemental packages and wipes as well as clothing packages when they need them. I deliver the clothes, sit down and talk to these young ladies about their goals, what they are working on and

THE HISTORY OF BOUTONNIÈRES Men wear boutonnières on special occasions, including weddings, religious ceremonies and prom night. At weddings, the groom and his groomsmen typically boutonnières. But some historians believe men have not always worn flowers strictly on special occasions. Some believe the modern-day boutonnière traces its lineage to sporting events in ancient civilizations, including Egypt. During those times, men might have worn certain colored flowers as a show of support for particular participants in sporting events, not unlike how many modern sports fans wear team shirts, jerseys and other attire to display their support for their favorite teams. But according to GentlemansGazette.com, the boutonnières of today likely started appearing just a few centuries ago. A 1771 painting of British Captain William Wade by the artist Thomas Gainsborough depicted Wade wearing a bouquet of flowers in his top buttonhole. And in the 19th century, men’s fashion included coats that folded over the top, revealing the inside of the buttonhole. Boutonnières provided an aesthetically appealing way to cover up that buttonhole.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF AVOCADOS Avocados can benefit vision. Avocados contain lutein and zeaxanthin, a pair phytochemicals concentrated in the tissues in the eyes. Lutein and zeaxanthin are believed to block blue light from reaching structures in the retina, thereby reducing a person’s risk of developing macular degeneration. In fact, studies published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, the American Journal of Ophthalmology and The Archives of Ophthalmology found that diets high in lutein and zeaxanthin are associated with a lower risk of macular degeneration, which the American Macular Degeneration Foundation notes is the leading cause of vision loss in the United States. ELSIE’S STEWED APPLES Serves 6 to 8 2 to 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 pounds apples, peeled, cored and cut into thick slices 1/2 cup honey, preferably sage honey 1/2 cup white wine Zest of 1 lemon Juice of 1 lemon Fresh sage sprigs for garnish 1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the apples, turn the heat to high and sauté until they begin to brown on the edges, about 5 minutes. If some are getting too well done, remove them and place on a plate while the rest continue to cook, then return them to the skillet when all are done. 2. Reduce the heat to low and add the honey, wine, lemon zest, lemon juice, and 1/2 cup water. Cover and allow to cook until the apples are tender but still firm; you don’t want them to turn into applesauce. 3. Serve this in a bowl, tuck in a couple sprigs of fresh sage from your garden, and tell your guests all about sage honey.

FOUR TIPS FOR BETTER MANAGING YOUR RETIREMENT BUDGET (NAPSI)—A recent survey by Ameriprise Financial found that 68 percent of retirees with at least $100,000 in assets have not yet taken money out of their savings, beyond what they must withdraw as part of the IRS’ required mini-mum distributions from their retirement accounts. It turns out that the transition from saving money to living off of those assets is much tougher for seniors to navigate than many realized. The Ameriprise survey found that just one in five seniors say they feel “confident” about how to draw down their retirement savings, leaving them fraught with uncertainty about how to manage their budgets. Helpful Hints Here are four tips that personal finance experts recommend for tapping that nest egg and making the most of your retirement years: 1. Revisit your monthly expenses. Many people do a good job of tracking their spending in their preretirement years and establishing projections for what they anticipate they will spend in retirement. But it’s important to revisit those estimates and use your actual expenditures to fine-tune your average monthly expenses. This will give you a more precise handle on your spending needs and might also identify some areas where you can reduce spending.

Genesee County Office for the Aging People 60 and over are invited to attend senior citizen noon meals in Genesee County. To make or cancel reservations, please call: Batavia, 343-1611; Havenwood, 344-1260; Bethany, 356-5622; Corfu, 599-3248; Leisuretimers, 542-5984

2. Consider the bucket approach to income. A common approach to the asset withdrawal phase of retirement is to establish a “bucket strategy.” This approach involves breaking your nest egg into three buckets: (1) The Cash Bucket (one to three years of short-term income); (2) The Income Bucket (five to eight years of medium-term income); and (3) The Growth Bucket (10+ years of long-term income). As each of the first two buckets gets low on dollars, you replenish them with assets from the others. This helps you achieve stability in your cash flow and increases peace of mind. 3. Maximize the value of your assets. In addition to savings accounts and retirement accounts, you may have the ability to unlock value from assets that you didn’t consider. For example, if you own your home, a reverse mortgage can free up cash for you while you still live there. Many seniors are surprised to learn that one potential asset for generating immediate cash is a life insurance policy. It’s your personal property, so you have the right to sell it anytime. When you sell a policy—something called a “life settlement” transaction—you get a cash payment and the purchaser assumes all future premium payments, then receives the death benefit. Candidates for life settlements are typically 70 or older, with a life insurance policy that has a death benefit of at least $100,000. 4. Keep a backstop in place. Financial advisers often recommend that you keep a cash backstop in place of perhaps 12−18 months’ worth of living expenses. This will help cover unexpected costs (the biggest risk factor is health care expenses) and provide you with some reassurance that you can weather a sudden big-ticket item without having to cancel that longplanned vacation. Remember, it’s your retirement; pay yourself first.

Did You Know? According to Age in Place, nearly 60 percent of available senior income is being spent on housing and healthcare, and those expenditures do not include transportation or food. The rising costs of many necessities can make it difficult for seniors to make ends meet and, as a result, certain money-saving measures are often necessary.

For seniors who have fine-tuned their expense budget, allocated their income into buckets that ensure cash flow, maximized the value of their everyday assets and put in place a cash backstop, there’s no reason to hesitate to draw down your retirement accounts anymore. Just stick to your plan and stay the course.

O verw helm ed by M edicare?

For seniors who need additional cash flow for retirement, if they own a life insurance policy that they no longer need or can afford, they may be able to boost their retirement savings by selling that policy for immediate cash.

Going Away? Tips To Keep Your Home Safe While You’re On Vacation (NAPS)—Peace of mind is important to just about all homeowners, including when they’re away on a hard-earned vacation. When warm weather arrives, however, crime rates increase, according to a study published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information. Fortunately, you may be able to reduce any vacation time stress by taking five steps to improve security—protect your windows, monitor your doors, secure your AC, make your house a difficult target and stay in the loop about what’s happening at home. How to make it look like someone is home, even when you’re away • Stop your mail. Nothing says “there’s nobody home” like an overstuffed mailbox and a pile of newspapers on the front porch. You can fill out a simple form with the United States Postal Service asking it to hold your mail. Or, perhaps better yet, have a trusted neighbor stop by to pick it up. • Leave dog toys in the front yard. Even if you don’t own a dog, you can give a burglar pause by making him or her think that you do. • Maintain a well-kept yard. Remove tree branches that give easy access to top floor windows and cut back tall shrubs that make it easy for burglars to hide behind. • Add outdoor motion sensor lights to scare away those trying to walk into your yard and peek inside. With smart lighting technology, you can program your lights to come on even when you aren’t home. This feature has an advantage over automated timers because you can turn the lights in your home on or off as you please from anywhere with your Internet-connected device, or set routines through your home automation service, such as ADT. • Integrate your wireless doorbell with your lights for further security benefits. Have the doorbell trigger an inside light to give the illusion that someone is home, since burglars prefer dark areas for stealth. While you’re away, home security can act as your house-sitting service and provide real protection. Choose a security company that has 24/7 monitored protection, such as ADT, which has over 19,000 employees who are always ready to help in case of an emergency. If you do choose to hire a house sitter when you’re away, provide him or her with a unique pin code to disarm your security system. Not only will you be alerted when the system is disarmed, you can deactivate this code once you return. With these steps, you’ll have peace of mind on vacation. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

On May 8, 1973, in South Dakota, armed members of the American Indian Movement surrender to federal authorities, ending their 71-day siege of Wounded Knee, site of the infamous massacre of 300 Sioux by the U.S. 7th Cavalry in 1890. On May 11, 1988, Kim Philby, a former British intelligence officer and double agent for the Soviet Union, dies in Moscow. Philby was perhaps the most famous of a group of British government officials who spied for Russia from the 1930s to the 1950s. On May 7, 1994, Norway's most famous painting, "The Scream" by Edvard Munch, is recovered almost three months after it was stolen from a museum in Oslo. It was recovered undamaged from a hotel about 40 miles away. On May 9, 1926, according to their claims, American polar explorer Richard E. Byrd and pilot Floyd Bennett fly over the North Pole in a triple-engine Fokker monoplane. However, the discovery in 1996 of Byrd’s diary suggests they may have turned back short of the pole because of an oil leak.

WEDDING REGISTRY TIPS Don’t hesitate to include expensive items on your registry. Couples also may be hesitant to include especially expensive items on their wedding registries. However, the couples’ parents and other close relatives may be honored to purchase more expensive items, so couples should not feel embarrassed to include them on their lists. It’s also important to note that many retailers, after couples’ wedding days have come and gone, discount registry items that weren’t purchased. So even if no one purchases the more expensive items, including them on a registry may significantly reduce their cost for couples who want to buy such items themselves after tying the knot.

GET THE MOST OUT OF BRIDAL SHOWS AND WEDDING EVENTS Come prepared. Chances are each vendor is going to ask couples for information so that they can follow up with a phone call or email with more detailed offerings and estimates. Couples attending the show can expediate the process by coming equipped with labels that feature their names, contact information and wedding date. They can then stick the labels on sign-in sheets or use them like business cards.

I’ve read every complaint about this poor beagle ever since you started writing about him. However, complaining isn’t helping. Have you approached the owner with your sentiments? Have you called the authorities on him? Leaving a dog out in the cold without insulated & heated shelter is against the law and definitely animal abuse. Dogs are pack animals that need companions and love. They have feelings; they are not robots; they freeze in the winter. Offer to adopt the beagle or make so much noise publicly that his owner will willingly give him up. It’s obvious the owner doesn’t care about him. Please, for the dog’s sake, take action. I can’t understand why people like that have pets.

Had a Wonderful Meeting at Karma Coffee & Tea shop on Center Street in Batavia. Great host, the freshest brew around, pastries... Couldn’t have asked for better place for a meeting... You gotta try the place!!!!! All 12 of us thank you for keeping it brewing until we were done. I cannot thank the wonderful woman (Mary from Marion) enough who gave me a ride from Walworth to Penfield when my vehicle was disabled about a week ago. There are still wonderful people in this world! She would not accept anything in It seems that [local town] has found a great money maker in the snow removal ordinance. I was blessed with two violations this winter on [local street]. They charge 40.00 per minute, the whole process of plowing the sidewalks took 2 minutes, and the bill was 80.00! Who makes 40.00 per minute? We shoveled religiously all winter and still got dinged for not shoveling the [local town] sidewalks! Most places use the tax dollars to remove snow from their sidewalks! [Local street] sidewalks were not cleared all winter. I think a petition is in order, and [local town] needs to redo this ordinance! Many street crossings have pedestrian signals that show the words WALK and DON’T WALK or show a WALKING

people and a wonderful time!

Our family of 5 visited Wolschlegel’s Maple Farm in Naples at the end of March and what a wonderful time we had!!! A beautiful hiking tour through their woods and operation followed by pancakes with fresh syrup. Beautiful views, and a cute “maple products” store. The kicker was as my husband and I scrambled around to get our 3 young kids some food, an employee was quick to give us a hand and kept checking back to make sure we were all set!! Wonderful

PERSON in white and a RAISED HAND in orange. Pedestrian signals direct pedestrians while crossing the street. The WALK or WALKING PERSON appears when it is legal to START crossing. When the DON’T WALK or RAISED HAND appears, you may not start across the street. The FLASHING signal means you should not BEGIN to cross because you may not have enough time to make it to the other side before vehicles start moving across your path. If the flashing starts after you have already started to cross, (which in my case going slow w/a 5-year-old with her bike and training wheels, it started to flash midway) you may finish crossing the street. The pedestrian has the right of way! Patience is a virtue.

We are very lucky to live in such a beautiful place, we should not take it for granted but should take care of it. I find it so sad to look out the car window and see so much trash along the roadside. If everyone would pitch in and clean up the ditches in front of their house, and people would stop tossing garbage out the window, we could really make a huge difference in the aesthetic of our scenic landscape. Make everyday Earth day and take care of our beautiful world!

Every time you have a plumber, electrician, hvac, or repairman do work for you and you pay them with cash, you cannot be certain that they pay any tax on that money. If they do not, they are evading taxes and costing all of us in the long run. If the average citizen would only pay taxes on let’s say half of your income just think how much more take home pay you would have. We know we are all overtaxed, but part of the reason is that there are those among us that do not pay their fair tax, and the rest of us make up for them.

COMBATING CANCER IN YOUNG WOMEN ONLINE (NAPSI)—Women from the ages of 18 to 50 are the most active group of adult Internet and social media users. And even though women in this age group are less likely to get breast cancer than older women, it does happen. Now, three southern states are making sure these women have reliable online resources.

Confidence and Pride Beautiful smiles enhance self-confidence, esteem, career successes and one’s positive attitude toward life in general. Traditional braces and Invisalign for children and adults.

Tailored to the Territory The program could be lifesaving throughout the country. African-American women are more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer younger, and more likely to get a type of breast cancer that grows quickly and is hard to treat. Louisiana—especially the southern part of the state—has a large African-American population. Dr. Donna Williams, director of the Louisiana Cancer Prevention and Control Programs (LCP), says she was surprised to see the number of women under 50 in the area with breast cancer. Many of these cancers were found through a program started by LCP and local partners. The program sponsors two mobile vans carrying equipment to give mammograms, the recommended screening test for breast cancer. Still, diagnosis is just the beginning of the breast cancer journey. Raising Awareness LCP searched for breast cancer resources for young women on the Gulf Coast, but found only a handful. Practically none of them talked about fertility, early menopause or discussing cancer with kids—problems most older women with breast cancer don’t face.

So, with a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), LCP started a series of workshops just for younger women with breast cancer. It held meetings all over southern Louisiana and set up a Facebook account. LCP called the project “SurviveDAT” after the rallying cry of New Orleans Saints football fans: “WHO DAT!”

Dr. William Riedel Denise Munn, Optician

Going Regional, Going Viral When LCP applied for another CDC grant for the successful program, it had a big choice: keep SurviveDAT live or go totally online. While the inperson workshops drew only about 20 people at a time, the Facebook page had gained more than 2,000 followers statewide. The decision was easy from there: It was time to go virtual. All of Louisiana could be reached with the planned website. But why stop there? LCP also got in touch with cancer control programs in other states. Right away, Mississippi and Alabama signed on, creating SurviveMISS and SurviveAL. The goal of the “Gulf States Network” was to reach 7,000 users online in the first year. It took only 90 days to exceed that. Information Machine A single small team manages the websites. Each site has the same look and basic structure and facts. Individual states can add regional information such as meeting dates and support group contacts separately. All the websites share resources such as expert advice, survivor videos and frequently asked questions. Many conferences and other live events are also recorded or streamed live online. Looking to the Future Dr. Williams and her partners want the project to keep growing. Already, cancer control programs in Arkansas and Florida have expressed interest. And there are more issues to discuss. Women often have concerns about fertility, a good reason to talk to a doctor before beginning cancer treatment. Many are interested in genetic counseling, or speaking with a professional before genetic testing about possible test results and what they could mean. Learn More: CDC has a nationwide campaign about breast cancer in young women called Bring Your Brave. To find out about your risk and steps you can take, visit www.cdc.gov/BringYourBrave.

DID YOU KNOW? Men and women often make an effort to lose weight before special events such as weddings or vacations. While many people do so in healthy ways, others take their weight loss efforts to the extreme. For example, many brides-to-be aspire to shed excess weight before their weddings so they can look as slim as possibly in their wedding gowns. The New York Times even reported in 2012 on a bride who spent eight days on a feeding tube to strictly limit calories so she could fit into her wedding dress. Such efforts are dangerous and could put individuals’ long-term health in serious jeopardy. Healthy weight loss for any occasion requires a long lead time, so that individuals can safely shed between one and two pounds per week with a healthy mix of diet and exercise, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Trimming between 500 and 1,000 calories per day from their diets can help individuals lose weight safely.

A body that lacks calcium draws this important mineral from the teeth, potentially causing dental problems such as weak roots, irritated gums, brittle teeth, and tooth decay, as well as delayed tooth formation in infants. It is therefore important to spot calcium deficiency and treat it early on. Because hypocalcemia may not present early symptoms, a dental exam can play a critical role in diagnosing the problem and averting its consequences.

treatment for several conditions. I have read otherwise. How strong is the evidence for its use? -- R.L. ANSWER: The effectiveness of acupuncture for over 50 different medical conditions was reviewed by the Cochrane Collaboration, an evidence-based medicine group. Some of these show significant benefit; for example, acupuncture improves pain and function in people with fibromyalgia and osteoarthritis, when compared with placebo pills. Acupuncture also was better than doing nothing and better than some other treatments. On the other hand, the Cochrane group could not find enough evidence to say whether acupuncture is effective for many other conditions, such as depression or shoulder pain. More importantly, some authors have argued that the benefit from acupuncture is a placebo response, and that the apparent benefit of acupuncture compared with a placebo pill is merely that acupuncture is a more effective placebo than just a pill. There certainly is evidence that even surgery has a potential for a placebo response, and one interesting recent study showed that people with Parkinson’s disease got more improvement in motor skills from a placebo pill they were told cost $1,500 than they did with the identical placebo if they were told it cost only $100. This shows me that our minds have a tremendous ability to improve our bodies if we really believe we can. I think that to a very large extent, and perhaps entirely, the real benefits seen by people who undergo acupuncture are a manifestation of the placebo response. Acupuncture has far fewer side effects than many medications and helps people with a variety of conditions. Whether its effect is “real” or placebo is almost not an issue. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: Last year, I started getting Raynaud’s. I can remember from my youth that my father had it, so it didn’t seem too terrible. It’s not just the fingertips that turn white, but also some of my toes are affected. I asked people who know of it or have it how one gets this. What is the cause? No one knows. So I asked my doctor. Even he said he did not know. How do I get these episodes, and what can I do to prevent them? -- R.S. ANSWER: Raynaud phenomenon is an exaggerated response to cold or stress, causing color changes in the skin of the fingers and toes. There is a long list of causes of Raynaud phenomenon. Often, no cause is ever found (in which case it is called primary Raynaud, which just means we don’t know what’s causing it). The most common known causes are the autoimmune rheumatic diseases, especially scleroderma, lupus and Sjogren’s syndrome. Hypothyroidism is an unusual cause, and some drugs can cause it as well. The current thinking is that primary RP is caused by abnormalities in the alpha receptors in blood vessels (alpha receptors respond to adrenaline and similar molecules). Keeping the whole body -- and especially the hands -- warm is the first step. Sudden temperature changes can trigger the effect. Warming the hands in warm water at the onset of an attack can stop it. Anxiety makes it worse, so a positive attitude can really affect this condition. Medications, such as amlodipine, may be necessary for prevention in more severe cases. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. TYPES OF TISSUE YOU CAN DONATE Bone: Doctors used donated bone tissue to treat patients with various diseases and ailments, include orthopedic cancers, spinal injuries, trauma, and damaged joints. DID YOU KNOW? Halitosis, or bad breath as it’s commonly known, can result from any number of factors. While food can be a culprit, some additional factors may be contributing to mouth odor as well. Poor dental hygiene is a particular concern. According to Colgate and the American Dental Association, failure to brush and floss teeth regularly leads to the accumulation of food particles in the mouth. This food can collect bacteria and begin to break down, causing a bad aroma. Dry mouth is another condition that causes bad breath. Without adequate saliva production, particles of food that may cause odor are not swept away regularly. Bad breath also may be an indication of a medical condition elsewhere in the body. Upper respiratory infections and gastrointestinal disturbances may contribute to halitosis. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

This is a cost-effective and reliable technique to reduce radon that involves capturing the radon from beneath a building before it can enter the dwelling. A venting system draws the radon gas from the soil beneath the foundation and exhausts it outside of the building - far away from windows and other home openings. A continuously operating fan draws and discharges the radon outdoors. Radon that has infiltrated water supplies may require other removal methods. Such methods may require spraying water into a contained air space, introducing air bubbles into the water or storing water in a tank until the radon has decayed. Another method employs granular activated carbon (GAC) to remove radon from the water. The GAC method has been more widely tested and is more commonly used in individual homes, according to the EPA.

First-time homeowners with little or no landscaping experience may not understand the benefits of mulch, which can be used to strengthen soil and protect properties from the elements.

LAWN & LANDSCAPING

DID YOU KNOW? According to the U.S. Department of Energy, well-designed landscapes can save homeowners enough energy to make the projects pay for themselves in less than eight years. The DOE notes that homeowners’ landscaping strategies should be dictated by the climates in which they live. For example, homeowners who live in hot, arid regions should employ landscapes to shade their homes’ walls, windows and roof, while those who live in cool regions should make sure their landscapes are not blocking the winter sun from reaching their homes’ south-facing windows. The DOE also advises that shading is the most cost-effective way to reduce solar heat gain in a home, noting that well-planned landscapes can reduce previously unshaded homes’ air conditioning costs by as much as 50 percent. The DOE also notes that, in treeshaded neighborhoods, summer daytime air temperature can be up to six degrees cooler than the air temperature in treeless areas. Homeowners considering adding trees to their landscapes should know that deciduous trees shed their leaves annually, which means they will block solar heat in the summer but allow sunlight into the home in winter. That’s ideal for homeowners who live in regions where temperatures climb in summertime but drop considerably in winter. Homeowners who want year-round shade might consider evergreen trees and shrubs.

HOW EVERYDAY PEOPLE CAN CUT ENERGY CONSUMPTION Start with your windows. The windows in a home can help homeowners and apartment dwellers reduce their heating and cooling costs. On cold days, pull back curtains so the natural sunlight can come in and warm the house, reducing the need to turn up the temperature on the thermostat. When the weather outside is especially warm, hang blackout curtains to prevent the hot sun from warming rooms and increasing the need for air conditioning. In addition, address any leaks around windows to ensure hot and cold air is not escaping and contributing to excessive energy consumption.

Roughly 50 percent of those who relocated did so for career advancement and/or more money, while 8 percent moved to be closer to family or for other relationship reasons. Moving is often characterized as stressful, and 31 percent of survey respondents who moved indicated that finding a home was the most challenging part of relocating for a job. Acclimating to a new community (29 percent), finding services such as utilities and medical care (13 percent) and making friends (12 percent) were also cited as some of the most challenging parts of relocating for a job.
