TEAM STATISTICS AS OF 3/3/2022
GAME NOTES •
Daryl Banks III led the Bonnies with 18 points and seven assists in Wednesday’s exhibition win over Alfred. Kyrell Luc added 17 points and four assists along with five steals. Barry Evans registered 12 points and eight boards.
•
Bona is turning the page after graduating one of the top senior classes in program history following last season. A year ago, the Bonnies were coming off Atlantic 10 regular season and tournament titles in 2021. Last year’s squad reached a national ranking of No. 16 after multiple weeks in the Top 25, the first national ranking for the program in four decades. The Bonnies finished by winning 23 games and reaching the NIT semifinals following three straight road wins at Colorado, at Oklahoma and at Virginia.
•
Last year’s seniors graduated with 76 victories over four seasons with the Bonnies, the fifth-most wins for any graduating class in program history.
•
This year, St. Bonaventure returns just four total points – yes, four, all scored by Justin Ndjock-Tadjore – and has less returning scoring than any other team at the Division I level. Nine new players join the roster while three return – only Ndjock-Tadjore logged minutes last year while Anuoar Mellouk and Brett Rumpel redshirted.
•
Bonnies fans will want to grab a program this year to learn all the new names and numbers, but just because the new faces are donning
the Brown and White for the first time, that doesn’t mean they come without experience. Four newcomers boast previous All-Conference honors: redshirt junior Daryl Banks III was a star of Saint Peter’s unlikely Cinderella Elite Eight run last year and was a three-time AllMAAC selection there. Fellow redshirt junior Moses Flowers, who joins Banks as co-team captain, was named to the All-America East teams twice while at Hartford. Meanwhile, two sophomores – guard Kyrell Luc and forward Anquan Hill – were named Rookie of the Year in the Patriot League and Northeast Conference respectively last year. •
Regardless of all the roster changes, the Bonnies figure to remain competitive based on who is on the sidelines. Under the leadership of Mark Schmidt, the Bonnies have been one of the Atlantic 10’s most consistent programs. The only A-10 team to enter this season having won at least 10 conference games in each of the past eight seasons, the Bonnies have reached at least 18 wins each year since 2013-14 with the exception of a 16-5 record in the 2020-21 campaign.
•
Since 2015, the Bonnies have secured 144 wins. During that time, only Dayton (151) and VCU (153) have won more games among A-10 programs.
•
Schmidt stands second among all active A-10 coaches in conference victories with 141. That total stands fifth all-time in league history with only John Chaney (296), Phil Martelli (218), Gale Catlett (180) and Chris Mooney (152) ahead.

HONORING BOB LANIER The St. Bonaventure men’s basketball program will honor the life and career of Bob Lanier during the 202223 season in multiple ways, both celebrating his efforts on the court and his philanthropy away from it. The season-long celebration of Lanier’s legacy will begin at Bona’s season-opener Monday, Nov. 7 when the Bonnies start the campaign with special recognition of the program’s most famous alum. A special pregame ceremony will highlight Lanier’s accomplishments and lasting impact, and his famous No. 31 retired jersey banner will move to the center of the Reilly Center rafters where it will remain for the entire year. Lanier’s 31 will also adorn Bona’s Continued on page 15
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK The GoBonnies.com Athletes of the Week presented by CPL for the week ending Oct. 30 are men’s diving junior Lucas Dekaney and women’s cross country freshman Claire Cuneo Cuneo was the top-finishing Bonnies runner, completing the 5K layout at the Atlantic 10 Championship in 18:59.9. Her run marks the first time a Bonnies competitor has broken the 19-minute mark in the conference championship meet since Kerry Caher did so in 2014. She finished 76th overall in a field of 136 runners. Cuneo's effort was just off her PR of 18:55 set two weeks ago in Buffalo and she paced the team for the first time this fall. Dekaney secured victories in the 1- and 3-meter dive this past weekend at the Atlantic 10 Invitational.
Lucas Dekaney
The Syracuse, N.Y. native was triumphant in the 1-meter dive with a score of 299.65, while notching a victory with a score of 284.95 in the 3-meter dive. The Bonnies are set to compete in the Reilly Center Pool for the first time this season, hosting Cornell on Saturday, Nov. 5 for their Pink Meet. All proceeds for this meet will go to the Pink Pumpkin Project in Olean.

jerseys for the entirety of the 2022-23 season, beginning with the Nov. 7 game. Bonnies players will sport 31 patches on their jerseys, made to look like the Bonnies home uniform during his seasons with the program, in tribute. Lanier passed away in May at the age of 73. The Reilly Center Arena court where the Bonnies have played since 1966 was named after Lanier in 2007. The No. 1 overall NBA Draft pick by the Detroit Pistons in 1970, Lanier led the Bonnies to an undefeated regular season in 1968 (23-0) and the NCAA Final Four in 1970. But the All-American center suffered a serious knee injury in the 1970 East Regional title win over Villanova and the short-handed Bonnies couldn’t overcome his absence in a 91-83 loss to Jacksonville in the national semifinal. Recruited out of Buffalo’s Bennett High School by Coach Larry Weise, Lanier grew as a freshman into his legendary size-22 sneakers, leading St. Bonaventure back into the national spotlight during his sophomore season in 1967-68.
In his first varsity season, the 6-foot-11 Lanier and his teammates — the legendary Iron Man Five of Lanier, Bill Butler, Billy Kalbaugh, John Hayes and Jim Satalin — put together an undefeated regular season and a No. 3 national ranking before losing to North Carolina in the second round of the NCAA tourney. Lanier averaged 26.2 points and 15.6 rebounds per game. Lanier finished his 75-game career as the St. Bonaventure record holder in seven categories: career scoring (2,067 points); career points per game (27.6); career rebounding (1,180); single-game scoring (51 points vs. Seton Hall); single-game rebounding (27 vs. Loyola, Md.); single-season rebounding (416); and average rebounds in one season (16) in 1969-1970. In 52 years, only his career points record has been surpassed — by three men who played 29, 37 and 48 more games than Lanier did, when freshmen were allowed to play varsity (after 1972) and schedules grew larger. An eight-time NBA All-Star and member of the 1970-71 All-Rookie team, Lanier scored more than 19,000 points over his 14-year career with Detroit and Milwaukee, averaging 20.1 points, 10.1 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.5 blocks, and 1.1 steals while shooting 51.4 percent from the field.

A BOLDER BONAVENTURE ignite. inspire. invest.
In recent years, Bonnies fans have turned heads nationwide as they traveled across the country in support of their school. To Brooklyn and Washington, D.C., for the Atlantic 10 Tournament. To Dayton, Ohio, and Dallas, Texas - on 48 hours’ notice - for the NCAA Tournament. To packed houses in Charleston, S.C., and Madison Square Garden in New York City. While the locales have changed, one thing remains the same: the unwavering support of Bona Nation, an amazing display of St. Bonaventure pride that has captured the attention of the nation on multiple occasions. Now, through visions for ‘’A Bolder Bonaventure,” plans are in place to help translate that passionate following into investments that not only benefit each of St. Bonaventure’s nearly 400 student-athletes, but also allow the Athletic Department’s 19 NCAA Division I teams to think bolder than ever before. On September 12, St. Bonaventure publicly launched the largest fundraising campaign in its history - “A Bolder Bonaventure: Ignite. Inspire. Invest.” - seeking to raise $125 million by May 31, 2025. Part of the overall campaign is a focus on improving our athletics facilities.
