SNOW PLACE I’D RATHER BE

As winter

approaches, many in Western New York bemoan the end of summer and warmth. I used to be one of those people. Not all are sad, however, because there is plenty to do and enjoy in the area every season. When I was younger, I discovered snowboarding which had me looking forward to winter for years. While my knees have taken snowboarding out of play for me, there are many things I look forward to this time of year. There is also plenty to celebrate and observe, as there are over 15 different holidays in the months of November – January.

My favorite holiday is Thanksgiving: food, friends, family, and football. It has nothing to do with any belief system, no stress of buying presents; it’s just about being grateful and spending time with the people you love. As life is so hectic, it’s wonderful to take a day to appreciate what is good in our lives and spend time with the people we love. Plus the food–soooo much eating. And if we’re lucky, a Bills win.

With so many holidays in these months, it is about the best time for shopping. As someone who has shopped small and local for decades, I absolutely LOVE how it seems to now be more the norm than exception. Amazon is easy, but nothing beats supporting the community and putting your money back

into your hometown. There are more markets popping up all over WNY for local artisans, making it easier than ever to support local and find truly unique gifts, or maybe items for yourself… I especially love the outdoor markets fashioned after those in Europe. Walking through the paths of booths with a friend, drinking hot chocolate or a hot toddy, taking in the wares on display, twinkling lights, festive music, hopefully a light snow – that really puts me into the holiday spirit!

The hectic pace of life and holidays makes it easy to forget that winter is supposed to be a time of rest – Mother Nature slows the world down with her icy breath. We could learn a thing or two from the bears that hunker down and hibernate through winter. For this reason, I love the snowfalls that blanket and quiet the world. Those quiet snows with the big fluffy flakes coming down like we’re inside a snow globe – they make a person feel they should be quiet and resting. The world is muted and beautiful, serene and peaceful, sparkly and white, and I look forward to it every winter. It’s the metaphorical blank slate as we close in on a new year. It’s also a great time to snuggle up under a comfy blanket with a good book. (And more hot chocolate or tea!)

My wish to you this season is to embrace the hectic and to make time for the quiet and rest. Maybe start a new tradition; a dinner with people you haven’t seen in a while, fun white elephant choices, hot yoga to warm you up, or shopping in a new neighborhood. Above all else, take a few moments to be grateful for what is good in your life, and maybe tell someone you appreciate them.

Happy winter!

“I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says, “Go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again.” – Lewis Carroll, Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland / Through the Looking-Glass

Creating Cozy Homes for the Holidays & All Year Long

From the moment you enter one of the three Tattered Tulip locations in Western New York, owner Lisa Miles and her attentive team welcome you a smile. What began as a personal hobby over two decades ago has blossomed into a thriving business that has decorated countless homes and taken on significant projects, including staging for local realtors. With the steadfast support of her husband of 34 years, Mark, and daughter, Ally, Lisa's passion for design and personal referrals led to her decision to put her expertise into a brick-and-mortar shop.

Tattered Tulip has become a premier destination for home décor, evolving from Lisa's initial decorating passion into collaborations with local businesses and real estate agents. When she acquired the store, Lisa modernized its offerings, moving beyond antiques to curate a diverse selection of stylish products that appeal to a broader audience.

Today, Tattered Tulip draws visitors from all over Western New York and beyond, with each location showcasing a unique ambiance and an ever-changing inventory. No matter what you’re looking for to enhance your home, you’ll find it at Tattered Tulip—and if not, the team is always ready to assist you with your search.

- Lisa Miles, Owner

A Shopping Destination

Visitors from all over New York and beyond—some even as far as North Carolina and Florida!—often make trips to explore all three locations, often leaving with trunks full! Lisa fondly recalls a day when a regular customer from Rochester arrived in a limo bus with twenty friends to celebrate her birthday by shopping at Tattered Tulip.

Lisa cherishes the moments spent chatting with customers, many of whom have become like family over the years. Every time someone tells her, “This is my happy place,” or “I love how this place makes me feel when I shop; I want that same feeling in my home,” she knows she’s fulfilling her mission. “It’s the ultimate compliment,” she reflects.

With her passion for design, Lisa has transformed Tattered Tulip into a destination for those looking to bring beauty and warmth into their homes. She keeps the offerings fresh by balancing current trends with classic staples, understanding her customers' preferences for both trendy accents and traditional favorites. By using social media and trade shows, Lisa discovers new styles that resonate with local shoppers, allowing them to mix the latest trends with timeless pieces.

CHOCOLATE CANDY CANE MARTINI CHOCOLATE CANDY CANE MARTINI

ingredients:

1 bottle of red wine (750ml) – choose a fruity variety like Merlot, Shiraz, or Cabernet Sauvignon

1 orange, sliced into rounds (plus extra for garnish)

1/4 cup brandy (optional)

2-4 tablespoons honey or sugar (adjust to taste)

2 cinnamon sticks

4 whole cloves

3-4 star anise

1/2 teaspoon whole allspice (optional)

1/4 teaspoon grated nutmeg

1-2 teaspoons vanilla extract (optional)

instructions:

• Slice the orange into thin rounds and set aside. If using whole spices like cloves and allspice, you can wrap them in cheesecloth for easier removal later, or just toss them into the pot.

• In a large saucepan or pot, pour the red wine. Add the orange slices, cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, nutmeg, and allspice. If you want a little extra flavor, stir in the honey (or sugar) and vanilla extract.

• Heat the wine mixture over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally. Avoid boiling the wine to keep the alcohol from evaporating.

• Simmer the wine gently for about 15-20 minutes, allowing the flavors to infuse.

• If using brandy, stir it in after the wine has warmed through. This will give your mulled wine an extra kick.

• Once everything is well-infused, remove the pot from heat. If you didn’t use cheesecloth for the spices, strain them out before serving.

• Ladle the mulled wine into mugs or heatproof glasses, and garnish with an extra slice of orange or a cinnamon stick.

Sara’s Plac

Dashing Through the Sno w

Running Through Buffalo’s Winter Wonderland

When I confidently declare that in Western New York, running is a 12-month activity, I often receive odd looks, eye rolls, and even snickers. With cooler temperatures, late fall into winter is arguably the best time to run in Western NY, especially when runners connect with supportive, like-minded community.

Success with winter running comes when running with others. There are year-round run clubs throughout Western NY. Middle Trail Running Company, a women’s running clothing company, has a weekly Saturday 9AM run that leaves from SPoT Coffee on Hertel Avenue. With them, we do a 3- and 5-mile route through Delaware Park for runners of all abilities, even those just getting started. After the run, the group meets back at SPoT to chat over a well-earned coffee. Throughout Buffalo and all of WNY, there is a range of year-round run clubs open to both active and new runners. But all of these groups know Buffalo’s weather loves to keep us on our toes! They stay on top of it, keeping you in the loop through social media, email, and their websites if a run club needs to be canceled.

Running with a community fosters personal progress as fellow runners cheer each other on, share goals, and encourage one another to push themselves further. The accountability of running with others can be a powerful motivator as well, especially on days when it’s hard to get going. And doing so often gives a shared wealth of knowledge about everything running related–from the most palatable energy gels, to headbands that actually stay put, to routes with the most wow-worthy views, to training plans that truly work. Middle Trail runner, Sara, captures her love of community running when she says, “I love running with a community because it motivates me to get moving while also getting to spend time with other runners and friends.”

It’s important to be smart when running in Western New York’s almost ever-changing winter weather. When the winter weather starts, I pull out the cold weather running pants after months of tank tops and shorts. Dressing appropriately, and not overdressing, is key to a successful cold

Years ago, a friend of mine explained the 20-degree rule to me: When running, the body feels 20 degrees warmer than the outside temperature. Consequently, a headband rather than a knit hat is often preferable. Layering is key! A dry-fit long sleeve tee under a lined zip-up works well for temperatures just below freezing and into the 30s. Running gloves are a must. My favorite running quarter zip even features built-in gloves so I don’t have to worry about forgetting to bring them on my runs.

Prepping for next spring and summer while connecting with others in the darker months of the year may feel like a long-term goal, but there is a more immediate benefit as those few added pounds from indulging in holiday treats may begin to melt away while running this winter.

Ruing in Snow or Shine

Buffalo’s Turkey Trot is the oldest turkey trot in the country in its 129th year! It seems to herald the winter running season with the temperature at its 9am start often hovering in the 30s. With 10,000+ participants, this run supports the YMCA while providing a celebratory atmosphere for runners of all abilities and walkers.

As December begins, a number of runs feature a holiday theme such as Niagara Falls’ Festival of Lights 5K. And in Youngstown, the New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day runs at Fort Niagara State Park signal the end and beginning of the year in a healthy way with their back-to-back events.

One of my personal favorite winter events is Mr. Ed’s Super Bowl Run in Middleport. The course winds through country roads, typically marked by picturesque, snowy fields, that lead to the last

mile on the Erie Canal path. There is a hill up to the path, but it is definitely doable in February temperatures.

Runners can always look to BuffaloRunners.com for upcoming events. For whatever event runners choose, you support great causes that range from local fire departments to youth and health related community programs. Races end with after parties that further build community among runners with conversation often turning to when they will see each other at the next run club or race.

By staying active and experiencing community during the cold weather months, winter runners are ready to be a part of WNY’s busy spring and summer calendar that includes more ambitious events like the 8K Shamrock Run and the countless 5Ks from May through September.

Ciara Rayshall self care with buf falo’s

-

WRITTEN BY JAYME BRESCHARD -

As winter comes and we start spending more time indoors, keeping a clean home becomes a key part of self-care. It’s not just about tidiness—it’s creating a space where you feel at peace. Simple habits, like washing your hands when you walk through the door and swapping into house clothes, can help keep germs at bay. Your home is your sanctuary, and maintaining it as a place that feels safe and welcoming is exactly why this part of self-care means so much to Ciara Rayshall. It’s about nurturing both your space and your well-being.

Ciara and her partner have a blended family – three teenagers age 14-16 and a two-year-old! To keep her home a sanctuary, Ciara delegates chores so everyone contributes to the household as part of a team.

Many women in our lives may have appeared less kind or nicer than we would have liked, but Ciara attributes that to exhaustion as they clean the entire house on their own. Teaching children responsibility provides practical life skills and shows how to care for yourself.

The definition of self-care has expanded since Ciara was a teenager, when she was more focused on superficial beauty of hair and nails. She was always protective of her energy and emotions, aware of self-preservation. After becoming a mom and growing into her 30s, beauty evolved to a much deeper level; it became a fuller understanding that self-care is what you eat, the music you listen to, the people who surround you, and how a home is kept.

That’s not to say that looking and feeling good is not important to self-care! Eating foods that are nutrient rich with vitamins like C, B, and A promotes clear skin and shiny hair and nails. Ciara encourages her family to have vegetables and fruit with every meal. Staying away from processed foods strengthens the body’s immune system.

She is mindful of where she shops and takes advantage of co-ops for local produce. Buying local produce offers many health benefits, such as providing more dense nutrition, eating seasonal foods that promote a more balanced diet, and fruits and vegetables that are more flavorful and nutritious when harvested closer to peak ripeness.

Ciara gets her teenagers to eat more vegetables through her signature green smoothie, which contains spinach, kale, pineapple, and apple with fresh-pressed apple juice. She teaches them to care for themselves through what they put into their bodies.

Ciara also shares a bit of wisdom about organic food: Look for a food’s PLU code. If the number starts with a “9,” then the produce was grown organically.

Fresher produce also provides good-for-you skincare. Ciara likes to use bananas, matcha, avocados, and turmeric for her DIY face masks, recently picking up spirulina at the co-op market to try out a new recipe. Her favorite base for her masks is Indian healing clay. She looks for ingredients that have key nutrients, saying, “If they are good for my body, they are good for my face!” Rarely does Ciara use drugstore face masks because of the added fragrances and preservatives.

Those of us with kids at home can sometimes feel hopeless of ever finding the time to incorporate self-care into our routines. Delegating responsibilities can be part of that solution, but it’s also crucial to have a plan. Ciara intentionally sets herself up for the week on Sundays, identifying the top 3-4 things she wants to accomplish each day so she can have a self-care day, which can be as simple as turning off her phone, taking a nap, going for a walk, journaling, or watching her favorite show. Ciara even brings her two-year-old daughter into the things she loves to do, such as meditating and yoga, so she teaches wellness by example.

Ciara advocates for being aware of the signs of seasonal depression as we prepare for the inevitable long winter months ahead. It is easy to feel down when it’s cold and daylight hours are shorter. “A way we care for ourselves is caring for our hobbies and caring for our creativity.” Ciara recommends finding a community around hobbies or the things you like to do and meet regularly with them. Or be intentional about “My Winter” and learn something new. Having a group to share joy and laughter can help you care for yourself in these upcoming winter months!

“I used to think ‘self-care’ meant DIY face masks, pedicures, & homemade coffee scrubs... Then I realized it can be that, but it is also much more. It is loving my face in the morning and again in a room full of beautiful women. Complimenting my stretch marks and praising my edges after a workout. Celebrating my small win on Monday and not shaming myself for missing the mark on Friday. Giggling at my ‘blonde’ moments when no one else does, knowing I’m funny because I said I am. It’s living out what I deserve and being truly kind to myself. It’s not settling just to say I have a material possession. It’s obeying the law of karma. It’s saying what I feel. It’s being patient and kicking those thoughts of comparison out of my head with courage! It’s asking for help, or space, or boundaries. It’s not proving, but simply being. It’s saying my own name aloud just to hear the sound of it. It’s Me in full mess up, trusting that even my fails are written to progress me. It’s sleeping.”

WNY UROLOGIST WHO FLIES AIRPLANE TO SAVE PUPPIES FROM KILL SHELTER GOES VIRAL

Here at Sweet Buffalo our goal is to shine light on unsung heroes and show the world what great humans they truly are. We recently had the opportunity to be at a dog transport where we met a very special person who we felt the world deserved to know about!

His name is Dr. Brian Rambarran and he’s a urologist from Western New York. When he’s not helping to save human lives, he volunteers his time to fly his SR22 aircraft across the state to save dogs from kill shelters through Pilots n Paws. He then teams up with Nickel City Canine Rescue who places the dogs in foster homes right here in Buffalo, N.Y. For the past 12 years, he’s saved more than 500 dogs from euthanasia.

A few months ago we took a video of this amazing act of kindness showing Dr. Rambarran taking the dogs off his airplane and putting the puppies into the loving arms of Nickel City volunteers.

The video went viral across all of our social platforms, raising thousands of dollars for the rescue.

Dr. Rambarran and Nickel City were featured on ABC News and Good Morning America and recently, Dr. Rambarran was asked to be a guest on the Jennifer Hudson Show! Dr. Rambarran says the amount of publicity that has been received for Nickel City and all animal rescues has blown him away.

“I am truly humbled receiving all of this support. The generosity and kindness people have shown is nothing short of amazing. All of the volunteers appreciate the outpouring of support,” said Dr. Rambarran.

“Dr. Rambarran’s transports have inspired people to adopt, foster and volunteer, raising thousands of dollars for the cause,” said Brandon Wolf, board member at Nickel City Canine Rescue.

Dr. Rambarran plans to continue to fly for years to come, helping to save animals and bring joy to families welcoming new pets.

If you’d like to foster or volunteer for Nickel City Canine Rescue, visit NickelCityCanineRescue.org.

The town of Ellicottville has many traditions and events they host throughout the year, but Christmas time famously gathers visitors. In December, Ellicottville turns into a beautiful winter wonderland, “unique, cozy, and comforting,” as Noelle and Olivia describe it. Start your morning off with breakfast and fire truck rides with Santa! Check out the tree lighting ceremony and sip on some hot cocoa. Decorate cookies, take a horse and wagon ride, meet live reindeer, and soak up the fun activities perfect to get you in the mood for the holidays.

THE CHRISTMAS STROLL

The Christmas Stroll, dating back to 1987, features a living Nativity scene traveling around the village and meeting at the gazebo in front of the Village Hall. On December 14th, community members will reenact the Nativity complete with children as live angels, baby Jesus, carolers, donkeys, and even a live camel. This tradition has been an Ellicottville favorite for 37 years. Take a horse drawn wagon ride starting in front of the gazebo, and enjoy treats or dinner at any of the businesses just a few doors down from the Nativity scene.

BUF’S WINTER WONDERS

When

people hear I am from Buffalo, NY, the first thing they think of is snow! I quickly defend our beautiful hometown and launch into a series of all the wonderful things to do here in the winter months. Since we all could use a little inspiration once in a while, here are some of my favorite winter and holiday activities.

I hope some of these ideas inspire you to get out and try something different this winter or maybe start a new tradition with friends or loved ones around the holidays!

CHRISTMAS IN THE COUNTRY

ARTISAN MARKET

My mother, sister, and I always visit the Christmas in the Country artisan market at the Hamburg Fairgrounds. Held in the beginning of November, it’s the perfect event to get you excited about the holidays. My sister may be their biggest fan, and her joy when we arrive is contagious. I have even been spotted wearing a Christmas sweater there, even though it’s only days after Halloween!

BRUNCH @

SHIRT FACTORY

We also always plan a holiday brunch for my whole family, and the past few years we have gone to the Shirt Factory in Medina. If you haven’t been here, put it on your to-do list. The building is old and beautiful and located in the heart of the town. Think Christmas coffees, gingerbread French toast, red velvet waffles with peppermint sprinkles, and sugarplum margaritas. I can’t wait to see what’s on the menu this year!

MULBERRY ITALIAN

RISTORANTE

One of the honorable mentions for spots we traditionally visit start at Mulberry’s in Lackawanna. Their giant meatball is famous, and their Christmas decorations are so beautiful. Ask to sit in the bar area when you make your reservation!

MARILLA COUNTY STORE

It wouldn’t be the holiday season without a visit to The Marilla Country Store. Who doesn’t love to walk around a 170-year-old general store and browse Christmas décor, buy oldfashioned candy, and stock up on bulk holiday sprinkles? I promise you will leave with something unique.

Niagara on the Lake

LIFE IS A TAPESTRY OF FLEETING MOMENTS— PRECIOUS SNAPSHOTS OF JOY FOUND IN LAUGHTER WITH FRIENDS, THE MAGIC OF SUNRISES AND SUNSETS AND THE TREASURED CANDID PHOTOS.

NIAGARA ON THE LAKE

Another fabulous place to visit in the winter is Niagara on the Lake. The town is always decorated so beautifully, like something out of a Hallmark movie. Shops are filled with warm scents, and there are cozy cafés, ice skating at the Pillar and Post, the Ice Wine Festival in January, plus my favorite place to visit, the Budapest Bake Shop. If you’ve never had a chimney cake, you need to. I always order mine with cheesecake filling and Skor candy pieces! Another high recommendation of mine is the traditional high tea at the Prince of Wales Hotel. I took my daughter last winter, and we got dressed up, sipped tea, and ate tiny sandwiches. We felt so fancy and really had a wonderful time.

124 Q HOTEL & SPA

If you’d rather stay inside and be warm, I highly recommend a stay or even an afternoon at the 124 Q Hotel & Spa. The spa is incredible and has Canada’s only snow room! You can even just book the hydrotherapy circuit and spend the day between the warm and cool pools, sensory showers, sauna, and steam room. There is plenty to do without ever leaving the property.

LOW OR NO COST FUN

If you are looking for some winter fun ideas for the Buffalo area that are low cost or no cost, I have a few I do every year! I love to visit Reinstein Woods to snowshoe. If you don’t own a pair, you can rent them for only a few dollars! There is nothing like walking through the woods on a crisp, sunny winter day. And if you enjoy being outdoors, ice skating down at Canalside or the Rotary rink at Fountain Plaza is such a fun winter activity. If you’re feeling adventurous, the Eternal Flame trail in Orchard Park is stunning in the winter. The falls freeze, but the flame continuously burns. Just please use caution, wear proper footwear, and bring a lighter in case the flame is out!

Jeff from AAA Timberline was the first to suggest a log set instead of an insert for a fireplace I wanted to maintain rather than completely change. The log set was a more economical option, as my main goal was aesthetics rather than heating the entire house (but I can if need be). These changes solidify the comfort of my home. When a blizzard hits Buffalo, I always feel prepared with a truly functional fireplace that provides needed warmth. - Jessica R.

— Jim C. was looking for something aesthetically pleasing but would provide warmth for him and his family.

I was very pleased with the overall experience I had with AAA Timberline. The job was completed just days before the historic blizzard last year, where I was left without power or heat for two separate twelve-hour occurrences. The work that AAA Timberline did was able to keep my family safe during the storm. I do not know how we would have weathered the storm that affected so many of our friends and neighbors.
