HOMETOWN

MAKE THE YEAR AHEAD CLUTTER-FREE Switch to e-statements for bank documents and utility bills. Paper is a big contributor to household clutter. That’s still the case even though many adults now pay the majority of their bills online. When given the chance to choose between paper or e-statements, opt for the latter so bills and bank statements don’t pile up on your desk or throughout your home office. If you still want to keep important bills and bank statements, download them to your computer and keep them in a designated folder on your desktop.

President Dwight D. Eisenhower declared that it was the opposite day for one day only on August 17th, 1959.

Do you know about the Opposite Day Paradox?

Look at the words above and write out the Opposite of them. Don’t worry, this isn’t an Opposite Day trick!

Technically, Opposite Day cannot exist. If you say today is Opposite Day, then because of the rules of the game, today would be the opposite of what you just said, i.e. not opposite day or a normal day. Instead, if you said it was a normal day, then it would be a normal day.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Risk to Chemotherapy Patient From Healthy Cat is Small ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: My neighbor is battling cancer for the third time. The medical personnel she sees when she goes for her chemotherapy treatments are urging her to get rid of her two cats. They claim the cats are a danger to her health. Wearing gloves and a mask while cleaning litter boxes will not help. Why? What do the cats have that can hurt someone going through chemotherapy? -- S.C. ANSWER: Cancer chemotherapy frequently causes damage to the body’s immune system. Many types of chemotherapy work against fast-growing cells, and while cancer cells are fast-growing, your neighbor’s healthy immune system cells, especially white blood cells, are also fast-growing and can be damaged by the chemotherapy. Avoiding potentially infectious agents is therefore wise advice for people going through chemo. There are several potential infections that can be transmitted from cats to humans. The one we worry about most is probably toxoplasmosis, a protozoan infection. Toxoplasmosis is a big concern in people with HIV, but also can be an issue in people who have recurrent chemotherapy or have a more prolonged reduction in immune system function. However, toxoplasmosis can be effectively avoided by wearing gloves while changing the litter box, keeping the cats indoors and feeding them only high-quality cat food and never raw meat. Cat bites or scratches can be very serious, especially to someone with an immune system that is less than perfect. If her cats occasionally bite or scratch, that would be a problem. There are a few other uncommon zoonotic diseases (ones that can be transmitted from animals to humans) that might be of concern. Her cats’ veterinarian would be a useful resource to find out more. The cats should, of course, be thoroughly evaluated. Allergies, not infection, might be the issue, but allergies are usually less of a problem during chemotherapy. The risks from a healthy indoor cat are very small. Risks must always be balanced against the very strong feelings people have for their pets, especially at a vulnerable time. I would not recommend separating a person from her cats without very good reason, and would want to know exactly why, since it’s not clear to me in this case.

TREATING DEPRESSION Depression is a very treatable condition. Psychotherapy (talk therapy), medications or a combination thereof can be very effective in managing symptoms. Mental health professionals can work with individuals to find the right therapy based on symptoms and severity of the depression. Also, it may take some time to find the right medication or treatment; therefore, people are urged to remain patient and hopeful. The National Institute of Mental Health says people who suspect they may be suffering from depression should make an appointment to see a doctor or health care provider. The sooner action is taken, the more quickly the condition can be addressed.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * To soften food that is stuck on a pan, try soaking it overnight with fabric softener. Just fill the pan with enough water to cover the burned-on food, then lay a dryer sheet of fabric softener in the pan (poke it down so it will stay under the water). The next morning, you should be able to wipe the food right off. You can even use the fabric softener sheet as a scrubber. – A.S. in Maryland

THE BENEFITS OF PREPLANNING YOUR FUNERAL Preplanning can help control costs. Preplanning often includes men and women setting aside money for their funerals before they pass away. Knowing that a funeral, which can be expensive, is already paid for can provide additional peace of mind. Instead of worrying that their relatives will be forced to handle the burden of financing their funerals, men and women who preplan can rest easy knowing their insurance money and life’s savings will be going to their surviving loved ones and not toward paying for funeral expenses.

S E V RA Thanks, First Responders! Last week, I was driving to the Sweden Dog Park with my two German Shepherds. The morning temperature was below 10 degrees - freezing cold! Suddenly, my car stalled out at the intersection of Redman Road and New Campus Drive. Officer Carla Fintak just happened to be traveling the same route and she came to my rescue! I was able to stay warm inside her patrol car while awaiting

Back to Drivers Ed For those who make left turns into a four lane road, per the NYS Driver’s Manual: “Approach the turn from the right half of the roadway closest to the center. Enter the left lane, to the right of the center line. When traffic permits, you can move out of the left lane.” Note: Enter the left lane, not the right lane because the right lane puts you in the blind spot of the person who was in front of you and who just did it correctly. No Jingle? Who Cares! About no Jingle Bells in the schools: I do know the history on the reasoning for this, but it’s only a song. There’s so many songs that kids can sing. Don’t be so upset over something so miniscule. Move on; really, it’s only a song. Please put more energy into helping the homeless or perhaps volunteering in a food pantry. That’s a much more important place to use this energy. Stop Animal Cruelty To the person who talked about horses being neglected on a local country road - please, please report this situation to the police or Lollipop Farm. They will send someone out to check. The owners will be prosecuted, and the horses will be rescued. Please don’t wait another minute, or they will die. I’m sure you don’t want that on your conscience. There is far too much animal abuse

Great Job! A huge Thank You to the firemen who responded to the fire at Seneca Place in the early morning hours on January 14th. Although some lost all, others’homes were spared. Of course, most important was the fact that there were no deaths or injuries of residents or firefighters. Also, Thank You to the staff at Pinehurst for inviting the residents in to get warm and have coffee, hot chocolate, and snacks. It was much appreciated. Last, but not least, thanks to the residents and others who were there to help Saturday morning when affected residents were allowed in to get essentials from their apartments. Seneca Place has always taken good care of their buildings and handled this disaster as well as could be expected. - Thankful

Outdoor Cats There are pet owners on [local road] in [local area] who think it’s appropriate to let their cats wander around the neighborhood looking for food in sub-zero weather. Please don’t depend on good-hearted neighbors feeding them; it’s your responsibility. Seriously?! SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles

Travel Is Complicated Right Now

My neighbor still thinks she’ll be going on a cruise to a foreign country in the spring. She calls her travel agent every few weeks to ask if the cruise is still on. Of course the travel agent doesn’t want to say no and have to give back the money just yet, so the answer is yes. My neighbor has been busily sewing new outfits for her cruise dinners. Me, I’ve been keeping silent about it, but I fear that cruise might not come to pass. There is always debate about requirements for masks on cruise ships, but that might be the least of the concerns. The latest updates have several countries in Level 4 Do Not Travel categories. My neighbor’s destination is currently at a Level 3, which is Reconsider Travel. New ones are being added all the time. If you’ll be traveling in the next few months, especially if it’s internationally, look at AARP’s travel page for helpful information: www.aarp.org/travel. Watch the Department of State’s website as well: travel.state.gov/ content/travel.html. Look for the information on your specific destination, and keep an eye on it, as it’s all subject to change. Invest in trip cancellation and interruption insurance. Make sure you understand the details of what it will and won’t cover. Be sure what the cruise company’s policies are as well. Be certain you know exactly when you’ll need a COVID-19 test before you go -- and that you can get one. At this point, many areas have backlogs on testing appointments, and walk-in places are often backed up for many hours. If you’re traveling internationally, you’ll also need a test before you return. The logistics and timing can be complicated right now. Your best bet: Stay in close touch with your travel agent about changes, warnings and timing. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Keep Pets Prepared for Emergencies in Winter, Too Dear Paws: Please remind your readers to include their pets in winter emergency preparedness planning. Last year, when the Texas power grid failed in extreme cold weather conditions, shelters saw many pets with cold-related injuries. When the power goes out on a cold night -- or for several days -- dogs and cats can’t just “tough it out.” -- Tyler in Southeast Texas Dear Tyler: You’re absolutely right. Readers, emergency preparedness should always include your pets. I warn my East Coast readers each summer at the start of hurricane season to put together a grab-and-go emergency kit for their pet. But every region experiences natural disasters, and sometimes they occur in the depths of winter. A winter-ready pet emergency kit should include: - A warm blanket for each pet. - A soft pad for pets to sleep on if you’re in an evacuation center. - Booties and sweaters to wear when pets go outside in freezing conditions. - Pee pads and pet waste bags. - Three days of canned or dry pet food, and bottled water. - A copy of each pet’s vaccination and medical records. - A three-day supply of each pet’s medication. - A list of important phone numbers, including their veterinarian. - Extra leash and collar for each pet, and extra ID tags. If your pet isn’t microchipped, I strongly recommend it. Pets have escaped from even the most responsible, organized owners. Keep them up to date on vaccinations as well -- it’s hard to predict whether your pet will be exposed to a disease by another cat or dog during an evacuation. You can find more tips and recommendations for emergency preparedness at https://www.ready.gov/pets.

I prefer winter and Fall, when you feel the bone structure of the landscape — the loneliness of it, the dead feeling of winter. Something waits beneath it, the whole story doesn’t show. ~ Andrew Wyeth

Canandaigua Area Woman Finds Community Support During Cancer Fight BY AMANDA DUDEK

I

t is a diagnosis one can never be prepared to receive. Cancer. Lives are changed and the fight begins. When surrounded by caring and generous people, however, one never needs to fight alone.

It was the last week in October. Jill Madden, a Canandaigua resident, began experiencing unusual pain in one of her breasts. Immediately, she scheduled a mammogram, and by November 15th, her doctor had determined Jill had cancer. She was quickly scheduled for lumpectomy, confident from what her surgeon assured her, that she would have a quick and relatively easy surgery and recovery. What happened next was anything but. In December, Jill’s surgery unexpectedly resulted in the removal of nine of her lymph nodes for biopsy, a drain, and not one but two incisions. Unfortunately, all of her lymph nodes were cancerous. Courtney Hand, Jill’s daughter, recalls her reaction. “This was terrifying and changed the outlook on things quite a bit, as you can imagine,” she said. Courtney shared that by the time her mother met with her oncologist later in December, her mother had already started taking medication. Jill is currently awaiting the results of her PET scan to see if there is cancer anywhere else in her body, including her organs and bones, and afterwards, plans to talk with her doctor about a plan for chemo and radiation. Jill Madden (Nunes) grew up in nearby Naples in the home her father built himself and which Jill’s son now owns. Learning generosity and hospitality from her parents at a young age, Jill has always opened her home and her heart to anyone and everyone. “She has done this my whole life,” said Courtney. “We always had tons of people coming over for meals: the more the merrier. My mom always put other first and tried to see the good in everyone. I am proud to call her my mom!” When she moved to the Canandaigua area, Jill’s generosity continued. “One Saint Patrick’s Day, she passed out gift cards at a local coffee shop in honor of a friend’s son who had passed away,” shared Courtney. “Exactly one year ago, she was recruiting others to knit caps for cancer patients only to be diagnosed herself. When Covid-19 first started, she sewed and gave away about 1,500 face masks.” Jill has also participated in Dolls for Hope, started a Blessing Box on Meigs Street in Jill Madden of Canandaigua Rochester, brought food to area homeless people, volunteered with her church’s youth to work on humanitarian projects, and taught painting classes to the youth. Last September, Jill also joined Courtney in organizing a successful fundraiser for cancer-fighting friend, Kaycee. Family friend, Kaycee Beverly (Gleason), a Farmington transplant from Naples, was sadly diagnosed with stage three breast cancer in September 2021, just two months before Jill would receive her own cancer diagnosis. She has undergone, and will continue to undergo, surgery and chemo as she continues to fight her cancer. Immediately, Jill volunteered to join her fight.

Jill with her “Madden Zoo,” kids, grandsons and significant others on Thanksgiving 2021, a little more than a week after she was diagnosed with cancer

Courtney reflected that the surgery has already taken a huge physical and mental toll on her mother, who has been out of work since mid-November. As she awaits further results, she continues to heal from her surgery. “She hates being a patient, and it’s no secret she’s a bad patient, too! Trust me, I know!” Courtney chuckled. Good humor aside, Courtney decided it was time to reach out to their community – a community Jill loves and serves – for help. Courtney took to social media to share her mother’s story. “So far, I have had a lot of people reach out to see what they can do to help out with our fundraiser,” said Courtney. “A few have offered to donate raffle baskets, and others have offered items for the silent auction. Some have even offered to bring her meals. One neighbor even dropped off a huge prime rib!” Jill has also received several gifts, flowers, and other kindnesses in an attempt to keep her spirits up.

My mom always put others first and tried to see the good in everyone. I am proud to call her my mom!

Jill, Courtney, and the rest of their family are deeply moved and grateful for this strong and heartfelt start. They invite the community to join them for Jill Madden’s fundraiser on February 6th at the Roseland Bowl in Canandaigua. (Tickets required.) Those wishing to help may also visit https://gofund.me/43ecc3bd.

“As soon as I told my mom, she said, ‘What does she need?’ and jumped into action,” said Courtney. Jill and Courtney made and collected numerous gift baskets to raffle off at Kaycee’s successful fundraiser. “Now they are going through this together, leaning on each other, sharing stories and experiences,” Courtney added.
