to walk up 75 to 90 flights of steps several days a week as exercise. After a steering wheel airbag went off and damaged my heart, I am afraid my ability to do that stopped. After years of medication, I am now on a pacemaker, which definitely helps. Could the exercise have weakened my heart to such a degree that it could be viewed as overdoing it, therefore exacerbating my condition? -- Anon. ANSWER: In general, exercise does not harm the heart. On the contrary, exercise is almost always good for the heart. However, there are exceptions. In healthy people, there is an optimal amount of exercise, and extreme levels of exercise (on the order of running more than 10 miles a day every day) begin to decrease the benefit that a person gets from exercise. (This remains controversial, but I am convinced from the data.) In people with severe heart disease (the kind with blockages in the arteries), overdoing exercise can lead to a heart attack, but this is an exception. For every person who gets harmed by overexercising, there must be a hundred who don’t get adequate exercise. The fact that you have improved a lot on the pacemaker suggests that at least part of your problem wasn’t with the pump function of your heart, nor with the arteries leading to your heart. The problem lies with the electrical supply. Once a pacemaker is in, that problem is immediately alleviated, but the heart may still be deconditioned (“out of shape”). Regular exercise will help the problem. Your cardiologist can better answer the question for you and also give you advice on how to build up your exercise tolerance over time.

Though most breast cancer survivors don’t get cancer again, the American Cancer Society notes that they are at higher risk for getting some types of cancer. According to the ACS, the most common second cancer in breast cancer survivors is another breast cancer. That only underscores the importance of continuing to get screened even after successful treatment. In addition to a second breast cancer, breast cancer survivors have a greater risk of developing salivary gland cancer, cancer of the esophagus, stomach cancer, colon cancer, uterine cancer, and ovarian cancer. The risk for thyroid cancer, sarcoma, melanoma of the skin, and acute myeloid leukemia also is greater after successful treatment for cancer.

Breast Cancer
FAQ The World Health Organization reports that roughly 2.3 million women were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2020. By the end of that year, there were nearly eight million women alive who had been diagnosed with the disease in the previous half decade. A breast cancer diagnosis inevitably leads to questions about the disease. The bulk of those questions undoubtedly are asked by the millions of women who are diagnosed with breast cancer. But millions more individuals, including friends and family members of recently diagnosed women, may have their own questions. Women can discuss the specifics of their diagnosis with their physicians. In the meantime, the following are some frequently asked questions and answers that can help anyone better understand this potentially deadly disease.
What is breast cancer? Cancer is a disease marked by the abnormal growth of cells that invade healthy cells in the body. Breast cancer is a form of the disease that begins in the cells of the breast. The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) notes that the cancer can then invade surrounding tissues or spread to other areas of the body.
Is there a link between oral contraceptives and breast cancer? The NBCF reports that women who have been using birth control pills for more than five years are at an increased risk of developing breast cancer. However, the organization notes that risk is very small because modern birth control pills contain low amounts of hormones.
Can breastfeeding reduce breast cancer risk? Breastfeeding and breast cancer are linked, though the NBCF notes that the role breastfeeding plays in lowering cancer risk depends on how long a woman breastfeeds. The World Cancer Research Fund International notes that evidence indicates that the greater number of months women continue breastfeeding, the greater the protection they have against breast cancer.
Is there a connection between stress & breast cancer?
Can exercise help to reduce my breast cancer risk? The NBCF notes that exercise strengthens the immune system and women who commit to as little as three hours of physical activity per week can begin to reduce their risk for breast cancer. However, even routine exercise does not completely eliminate a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer.
Is there a link between diet and breast cancer?
The NBCF notes that researchers have found that traumatic events and losses can alter how the immune system functions, which can provide an opportunity for cancer cells to establish themselves within a person’s body. The NBCF urges women to identify ways to keep their stress levels in check. Breast cancer education can be a valuable asset as women seek to reduce their risk for the disease.
The organization Susan G. Komen®, a nonprofit source of funding for the fight against breast cancer, reports that studies have shown eating fruits and vegetables may be linked to a lower risk for breast cancer, while consuming alcohol is linked to an increased risk for the disease. In addition, the NBCF reports that a high-fat diet increases breast cancer risk because fat triggers estrogen production that can fuel tumor growth.

A LOOK AT THE OLDEST HALLOWEEN TRADITION Bobbing for apples: Bobbing for apples is not quite as popular as it once was, as more people have become concerned about spreading germs. During the Roman festival for Pomona, which occurred around November 1, Pomona, the goddess of fruit and orchards, was celebrated. Romans believed the first person to catch a bobbing apple with his or her teeth would be the first to marry. It also was believed apple peels contained the secrets to true love.

On the whole I take it that middle age is a happier period than youth. In the entire circle of the year there are no days so delightful as those of a fine October, when the trees are bare to the mild heavens, and the red leaves bestrew the road, and you can feel the breath of winter morning and evening—no days so calm, so tenderly solemn, and with such a reverent meekness in the air.

Oversight To the lady at the garage sale in LeRoy on Saturday, Oct. 7 - I have your overpayment. Please stop by and get it or you can contact the Penny Saver. Spooky and Fun! This year’s display of scarecrows on Main Street in Victor are very creative- well done!! What a difference! A Childcare Center in my town recently updated the exterior of its building and grounds. Its colors went from dark and dreary to bright and cheerful. It’s not only an improvement for the business, it’s a bright spot in our downtown that makes me smile every time I drive by! Small Town Happiness Fall in our small towns is one of my favorite times. Between the decorations, scarecrow contests, mums and pumpkins there is so much to make you enjoy the season!

SHARE WITH US Nothing better to do? There seems to be a lot of issues with you and your friend. We have been seeing you and friends driving around and screaming profanity and flipping us off. You may think this is funny. You and your friend are grown up. If you are caught by police you will have to pay the consequences. We the people of these places (you know where) are tired. Our recommendation is to grow up and stop. Good luck, Concerned Citizens. Move over 99% percent of drivers move over a bit when someone is getting their mail. Unfortunately, there’s always that one who can’t be courteous enough and comes within 1 or 2 feet. Why can’t you move over? It’s a country road for crying out loud! You come over a blind hill going way too fast. One slip and you’re dead. Bet you’d complain your car got damaged.

DID YOU KNOW? The Ford Motor Company’s Model T was offered in several styles, not unlike how vehicles of today are offered in various models. Among the Model T styles available was a two-seat runabout, which can be considered a precursor to the coupe style popular today, and a seven-seat town car, which might be considered an ancestor of today’s SUV, at least with regard to passenger capacity. While prospective Model T drivers had some options when choosing which Model T they wanted to purchase, between 1913 and 1925 the car was produced only in black. The Model T engine was a 4-cylinder engine that generated 20 horsepower. To put that latter figure into perspective, many of today’s riding lawn mowers are 20 horsepower, and some commercial lawn riding mowers provide as much as 40 horsepower. While car dealers might not sell too many cars featuring 4-cylinder, 20 horsepower engines today, historical estimates suggest that more than 15 million Model T’s were built and sold between 1908 and 1927, the last year the car was produced.

Here’s a tip • If you have trouble opening the lid on glass jars, try using a pair of standard dishwashing gloves. They work to grip both the lid and the jar. They work especially well if your hands are the least bit moist. -- D.Y. in Pennsylvania • Save your old tissue boxes. They can be used to store plastic grocery store bags for easy use. They can then be stacked up and stored orderly. I use mine for garbage bags. • If you start now purchasing or making a gift or two each week, you could have more than a dozen Christmas presents taken care of before December even begins. It’s a good way to ease the pressure on your time and your wallet. -- L.S. in Indiana Send your tips to Now Here’s a Tip, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803. (c) 2023 King Features Synd., Inc.

Acid Reflux May be the Culprit in Cat’s Digestive Issues

SEPTIC TANK PUMPING
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: In regard to your recent article on a cat’s constant vomiting: I had the same issue with my cat. Stella was vomiting once or twice a day for several weeks. I couldn’t figure out why; there was no issue with new rugs or furniture. When they sprayed the lawns in our complex, I made sure not to track anything into the house. And Stella was an indoor cat, so she wasn’t being exposed to other cats. I got her in to see her vet, who ran tests and blood work and found nothing seriously wrong. The vet said that Stella might have GERD (acid reflux), and to give her one-quarter of a 10 mg famotidine pill each day. I cut each pill into fourths and give it to her in the morning with a little treat. It works perfectly; Stella no longer vomits repeatedly and has been doing well for the past two years. She gets a check-up every year at the vet and comes through with flying colors. Perhaps the owner could run this possibility by her vet and see what they think! -- Sande G., Webster, New York DEAR SANDE: That is certainly a possibility! Readers, be sure to check in with the veterinarian if your cat suffers from symptoms such as vomiting frequently or signs of distress after eating like excessive meowing or howling. Acid reflux is one possibility, but as Sande noted, it’s important to rule out more serious conditions. Be sure to ask plenty of questions at the vet’s office. Over-the-counter medications are a possibility, but keep in mind that formulations for humans contain larger dosages than a cat needs and may contain ingredients that are not great for your pets. The vet can advise you best.

Rochester’s Finest Class of 2023 Recognized B Y PAT T Y S C H W A R Z W E L L E R
The WNY Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation recognized the CFF Rochester’s Finest Class of 2023 at a Celebration Dinner on October 19th. This year’s honorees (with employer) are: Cullen Baker, FTS, Inc Jenelle Baker, KeyBank Austin Barkley, Bankers Life John Bennett, Worldwide Electric Sarah Fitzgerald, The Aragon Company Amanda Harvat, KAFL Lauren Henry, Pinnacle Hill Chiropractic Ashley Hill, Borg & Ide Imaging Jessica Kouzan, Keller Williams Realty Greater Rochester Michael Lawless, Villager Construction Nicole Liberatore, Innovative Solutions Alyson Mancuso, SWBR John Nucci, Woods Oviatt Gilman Bonnie Parrotta, Midtown Athletic Club Sean Phillips, Arctic Wolf CaTyra Polland, City of Rochester Ryan Proud, LeChase Construction Alexa Segrue, URMC Gina Trippe, Good Apple Ke’Shara Webb Fields, CPL Dustin Welch, Passero The Rochester’s Finest are honored for their career success, commitment to the community, and dedication to raising funds and awareness to help support CF research, patient services, and other mission-based initiatives of the CF Foundation. The program runs for 12 weeks and culminates in a celebration of their accomplishments. Included in the program are opportunities for professional development, networking, and developing skills as a leadership volunteer. In 2022, the CF Foundation funded $265 million in research and care for people with the disease. Money raised by Rochester’s Finest and hundreds of events nationwide support the Foundation’s mission to cure cystic fibrosis and to provide all people with CF the opportunity to lead long, fulfilling lives by funding research and drug development, partnering with the CF community, and advancing high-quality, specialized care. “Together with our community we are transforming cystic fibrosis from a deadly childhood disease to the best story in medicine,” said Heather McKeever, Executive Director of the WNY Chapter. “When the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation was first founded, children with CF typically did not live long enough to attend elementary school. Today, people with CF are achieving milestones like going to college and starting families of their own. We are making incredible progress, but
GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111
we can’t do it alone. We invite everyone in the Rochester community to help us make ‘CF’ stand not for cystic fibrosis, but for ‘Cure Found.’” Cullen Baker of FTS, Inc. says he grew up around Cystic Fibrosis, with two close cousins living with the disease. Baker has been involved with CF fundraising for decades and felt honored and excited to be part of the program this year. Baker says, “After seeing the advancements in medicine and technology over 30 years, I can see the immediate value the CFF has, and what this has done to address the horrible disease. I am confident that their drive will continue to advance beyond the day there is a cure for Cystic Fibrosis. CaTyra Polland of the City of Rochester says CFF has provided the participants with incredible professional development opportunities, networking and learning more about the disease and its impact on individuals, families, and the community. Pollard says, “The most meaningful experience has been meeting with Dr. Shaun Nelms to discuss his debut book … to learn about his experience in the education system and how he transformed East High School.” Pollard says CFF conducts essential research to improve the lives of those living with CF. I attended a celebration in Buffalo, NY where she witnessed the impact of CFF. She applauds the board members and staff, who “are so passionate about the agency’s mission and vision. I’m honored to help raise awareness.”
About the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is the world’s leader in the search for a cure for cystic fibrosis. The Foundation funds more CF research than any other organization, and nearly every CF drug available today was made possible because of Foundation support. Based in Bethesda, MD, the Foundation also supports and accredits a national care center network that has been recognized by the National Institutes of Health as a model of care for a chronic disease. The CF Foundation is a donor-supported non-profit organization. For more information, visit cff.org. Love to write? HOW TO KEEP KIDS SAFE ON HALLOWEEN Traverse familiar areas: Children trick-or-treating with adults may be able to venture a bit further in pursuit of treats, but it is generally safer to stay close to home where surroundings are familiar. This reduces the propensity for getting lost or wandering into sketchy situations. Older kids allowed to venture out on their own would be wise to stay close to home as well. Neighbors can assist if something goes awry and there’s less chance of getting turned around.

HIRING
SCARE UP A HAUNTED HOUSE AT HOME
HVAC Tech/ Plumber
Create a spooky ambiance: The fear of the unknown can be a powerful force. In many horror scenes, suspense is built by what audiences cannot see. Borrow this idea when creating the mood for your haunted house. Dim lighting by way of red or black outside bulbs will help increase the shadows and camouflage any decorations that may not be completely realistic in the light of day. In addition to lighting, create a playlist of creepy sounds. Consider how effective those grandfather clock bell tolls were at evoking fear in season four of “Stranger Things.” Pick your spooky sounds, whether it’s animals or something more supernatural.
Seeking motivated, reliable person. Knowledge in HVAC, plumbing or both is preferred but willing to train the right person. Must have a
valid NYS driver’s license. Must work well with other employees and have good communication with customers. $20-$30/hr- Pay based on experience Full-time M-F. 8am-4:30pm. Competitive pay. Pay based on experience. Health insurance offered after 6 months.

HOW TO KEEP KIDS SAFE ON HALLOWEEN Opt for face paints over masks: Medical masks may still be worn by some families as precautions against COVID-19. However, when it comes to Halloween costumes, face paints are preferable to masks and other face coverings. Masks tend to limit visibility, which can lead to kids tripping and falling, or even not being able to see cars or other pedestrians. Follow safety instructions when using face paints around the eyes and mouth.
