We are putting a healthy and yummy spin on caramel sauce for dipping your apples! We are using dates in this SUPER EASY recipe. Ask an adult to help you make this.
What are dates?
Dates are the fruit of the date palm tree, which is grown in many tropical regions of the world. They are chewy with a sweet flavor and are a good source of fiber, potassium, iron, and antioxidants. Eating dates can help improve digestive health, lower cholesterol levels, reduce inflammation, and support healthy brain function.
Fun Facts recipe
The first cookbook written in English was “The Forme Of Cury,” compiled by chefs of King Richard II in 1390.
1950s: Invention of the caramel apple
A Kraft Foods employee, Dan Walker, was credited with this delicious caramel dunked apple treat.
16 Medjool Dates, pitted
¾ cup unsweetened plant-based milk
1 tsp sea salt
1 tsp vanilla extract
Add all ingredients (starting with the milk) into a high powered blender or food processor and blend until mixture is smooth and no date chunks are detectable. Add more milk, 1–2 tablespoons at a time, if needed to help the blending process or to thin the caramel to your liking. Use immediately or store in the fridge for later.

How Long Will Dog’s Heatstroke Recovery Take?
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Two weeks ago, my Golden Retriever Lollie suffered a heatstroke. I let him outside into the backyard around midmorning. When I checked on him a er about a half hour, he stumbled to me and collapsed. I rushed him to the veterinarian, where he was treated. Lollie is recovering, but I am terrified to let him outside again. Why did he have problems so fast? Will this episode affect his health long-term? -- Greg in Houston
DEAR GREG: I’m glad to hear that Lollie is recovering, because heatstroke can be deadly -- as you know. Your fear is normal, because you’re clearly a caring pet owner, and you don’t want Lollie to be injured again.
at care and attention is perhaps the biggest factor in Lollie recovering fully and having fewer long-term complications from his heatstroke.
e reasons why Lollie suffered heatstroke aren’t as clear, but there are so many factors that could have contributed to it. e morning may have been hotter than usual. Lollie may have had an underlying illness that made it harder for him to withstand the warmer temperature. He might not have drunk as much water as he needed to maintain his internal temperature.
You did all the right things: letting him outside earlier in the day; checking on him periodically; and immediately taking him to the vet as soon as you saw his symptoms were serious.
Keep following the vet’s instructions to support Lollie’s care as he recovers. It may be weeks or months before he can spend the same time in the heat. He’ll get tired more easily, so his daily walks should be kept short. Make sure he’s eating and drinking enough water. All these factors will improve his health for the long term.

AVOID INJURIES
WHEN WORKING OUT Vary workouts and exercise regularly. Varying workouts is a good idea because doing so can prevent repetitive-use injuries and prevent overuse of muscles. Repetitive-use injuries such as shin splints and tendinitis require extended rest to heal, and that can derail your routine and nullify your progress. Vary workouts so you are not always working the same muscles, and don’t mistake varying workouts for varying workout schedules. Working out five days one week and one day the next increases your risk of injury.
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
By Keith Roach, M.D.What Prompted the Discontinuation of Fen-Phen?
DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 71-year-old healthy female who has struggled with my weight all my life. In the ‘90s, I thought I had finally found the solution in fen-phen. It was like a miracle! It took all the nagging thoughts of food out of my brain. My question is, with all the drug ads on TV every day blithely showing the many side effects leading up to -- and including -death, why can’t we use fen-phen? I worked in a hospital where a very large number of employees were taking it with great results. I never heard a hint about anything that could affect someone’s health.
Also, I talked to many of the other patients at the doctor’s office where I was receiving it. Everyone was overjoyed with the results. I had no temptations and no constant yammering in my brain to eat something. As I said, it was a miracle. I felt like a normal person. So, why are all of these drug companies allowed to advertise their products, but one drug that truly worked had to get snatched away from us? -- M.H.
ANSWER: Fen-phen was a combination of fenfluramine and phentermine, which was approved for use in 1986.
Approximately 18 million prescriptions were written for this medicine until 1987, when an association was made between the use of fen-phen and valve diseases of the heart. These cases were reported with fenfluramine or with the related dexfenfluramine alone, but never with phentermine alone. (Phentermine remains on the market.) Approximately 150 cases were reported.
Subsequent studies estimated that seven out of 10,000 people who took fenfluramine or fen-phen for less than four months developed valve disease, while 35 in 10,000 people who took fenfluramine or fen-phen for more than four months developed valve disease. They were compared to people who either took phentermine alone or did not use a weight-loss medicine. The U.S. Food and Drug Adminstration determined that the risk of valve disease (some being severe enough to prompt valve replacement surgery) was too high, so the FDA asked manufacturers to remove these drugs from the market. I fully understand your perspective. Some people are willing to take the risk of a side effect because the benefit of the medicine is so great. In my opinion, people should have the option of making their own decision, but in this case, the FDA felt that the risk was too high.
I have not seen a medicine for weight loss as effective as fenphen until recently, when semaglutide (Wegovy and Ozempic) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro, not yet approved for weight loss) became available. Just as you say, many of my patients report that they were able to easily control their eating while on these medicines, and as of the time I am writing, there have not been any serious adverse effects of taking these drugs, although there are plenty of milder effects. However, these medicines only work when you continue to take them, and stopping them generally results in rapid regain of the weight that was lost. It’s important to realize that if you take a weight-loss drug, you’re making a commitment to a long-term treatment.

A Man of Many Instruments, Ben Hockenberry Harmonizes in the Rochester Music Scene
BY SUZIE WELLSIn the bustling halls of St. John Fisher University, Ben Hockenberry wears many hats. As the Head of Library Systems and Subscriptions, he navigates the world of academia with precision and expertise. He recently published a study on the effects on institutional database subscriptions when articles are published outside of a ‘journal issue.’ He is an expert at his day job, but what makes him particularly admirable is his variety of self-taught musical prowess. Ben is deeply embedded in the vibrant Rochester music scene.
Within Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann, the Irish Musicians Association, Ben served as the past Rochester Chapter Chairperson and Public Relations Officer, and currently fills the crucial role of Youth Protection Officer. He coordinates and plays in demonstration bands for the Comhaltas chapter, and performs for Irish, Contra, and English dances in various combinations. His band Rós Gorm, with Ben Goehring, Peri Malone, and Ella Powers, most recently played at the Niagara Celtic Festival.
For Ben, the heart of his musical passion lies in the intimate setting of Irish sessions. e last Sunday of each month finds him at Johnny’s in Rochester, where musicians gather to share melodies and create magic. It’s in these informal gatherings that Ben finds a special kind of musical communion. He says he “loves the community of players, being able to communicate with other musicians without words.” He also likes to play for dancers. And for him, solo practice is a sort of meditation against the stresses of life.
Ben plays an incredibly wide array of instruments. While he modestly claims to play “too many instruments” (tin whistle, button accordion, bodhrán [the Irish drum], bouzouki, ukelele, guitar, and bass), his primary focus lies on the tenor (4-string) banjo and the mandolin, which share the same tuning as a fiddle, allowing Ben to play melodies in any key and easily facilitate playing chords.
Ben says he can get creative and improvise more with the tenor banjo and mandolin because he’s more experienced with them, but he enjoys the sound of the accordion (though he must work harder to get the button accordion to play what’s in his head, he says). inking about his musical journey, Ben admits that he only dabbled in music as a kid (trombone for a month, drums for a few lessons, a little piano here and there), but nothing stuck. In high school, he sang in a few musicals. en in college, he hung out with folks from the Geneseo String Band, who took him to an Irish session in Rochester, where he says, “I caught the bug. From there, I picked up bass, mandolin, and banjo, and the rest is history.”
Around 2014, Ben started teaching an Association-led mixedinstrument melody workshop in an annual series Comhaltas ran at Nazareth College. He started teaching private lessons over the next couple of years, expanding his network and spreading music. Now, Ben teaches a class at Fisher that leads students through Irish history and culture while teaching them some tin whistle and dance along the way.
Even without childhood musical roots, Ben has been writing notation, tablature, and ABCs for tunes and technical exercises for
students for a while now. He says, “I’m a fan of ear learning methods, but want to provide materials to learners in whatever ways they find most manageable.” So, he started adding staff notation to his audio tracks for Learners Sessions about five years ago, and about a year or two ago added mandolin/tenor banjo tablature to his YouTube videos in response to requests from one of his social media communities.
Ben says his most notable musical moment may be the first time Lynn Pilaroscia, patriarch of the local Irish ceili band, invited Ben to play in the band. “It was a huge honor,” Ben says. Ben stepped in to coordinate the band when Lynn stepped back, and Ben has enjoyed inviting other young musicians to experience the joy of playing for
To budding musicians, Ben says, “Find music you love, don’t be afraid to make a fool of yourself, and play out with others whenever
He looks forward to bringing back the annual free music/dance workshop day this fall, tentatively scheduled for November 5 at East Rochester High School, partnering with ERSD’s Roisin Dubh
Check out Ben’s Irish set dancing group at Irondequoit Recreation Center at 6:30 every Monday night; Johnny’s session every Last Sunday of the Month; and mark your calendars for his next Contra Dance with Ben Goehring and Barb Seppeler at e Well on Empire Blvd on October 20 at 6pm.

HOW TO ROAD TRIP IN AN ELECTRIC CAR
Find some RV parks along your route. RVs have required charging stations for years, so RV parks typically have these stations available for a nominal fee of around $50. RVs typically are Level 2, so EV drivers that require Level 2 charging systems should be able to charge their vehicles at RV parks. In addition, many RV parks now also provide charging stations for Level 1 vehicles, though drivers should confirm which parks have such offerings prior to embarking on their trips.

Repair bald spots. Summer exacts a toll on lawns in various ways, and even homeowners with green thumbs may end up with a lawn filled with bald spots come September. Autumn is a great time to repair these bald spots. Lawn repair mixes like Scotts® PatchMaster contain mulch, seed and fertilizer to repair bald spots, which can begin to recover in as little as seven days. Before applying such products, remove dead grass and loosen the top few inches of soil. Follow any additional manufacturer instructions as well.
DID YOU KNOW?
Raking leaves may be an autumnal traditional for many homeowners, but those who want a less strenuous way to prevent their lawns from being suffocated by fallenleavesmaywanttoconsider mulching them. Fallen leaves should never be left to linger on a yard for very long, and some homeowners may be surprised to learnthatwaitingtorakeuntilallof the trees on a property have shed their leaves can be detrimental to the lawn. That’s because fallen leaves trap moisture and prevent sunlight and air from reaching the grass, making lawns more vulnerable to disease. Fallen leaves also can harbor insects, again putting lawns at risk of disease. Mulching may be the best option for homeowners who prefer to avoid spending several weekend afternoons each fall raking leaves. Many lawnmowers are now equipped with mulching capabilities, which can remove the need to rake. When leaves are mulched, they are minced into tiny pieces that are left behind on the lawn. Such pieces are so small that they won’t block air or light from reaching the grass, nor are they likely to harbor insects. But as these tiny pieces of leaves decompose, they enrich the soil with nutrients, so much so that some lawns may not even need to be fertilized in the fall.

Here’s a tip
• Two tips for sewing buttons: First, for pants buttons, use unwaxed dental floss. It’s incredibly strong and can take a lot of abuse. Second, slip a pin between the button and the fabric before sewing on. When you’re finished, remove the pin. e button has some room behind it, and it will last longer.
• is is a tip for us singletons. I love whipped topping on my hot chocolate, but it doesn’t always last in my fridge. I buy a tub of it, and spoon it into mug-size dollops on a cookie sheet lined with wax paper. When the sheet is full, I freeze them. ey can be peeled off easily and slipped in a container or plastic bag. When I make my hot chocolate, I plop one in straight from the freezer. It takes only minutes to so en and melt. And it’s delicious!

HOME IMPROVEMENT: Carpentry - Exterior
LANDSCAPE: Mowing, Trimming
TRANSPORTATION: Medical, errands, 24/7 including emergencies
AUTO REPAIRS/WELDING: Mobile Mechanic
PICK UP TRUCK WITH TRAILER to transport a small vehicle. If you know anybody, I will pay a cash bonus if I use this concept and pay the other person in an agreement.
In the past, I have received fictitious/bogus responses using someone else’s name and out of state numbers via e-mails. Over the years individuals have been helping me out; as life changes, they can no longer assist due to personal reasons. I have helped folks for over 40 years and now need help at times from a caring individual - that is hard to find these days.
YTM - How many dollars you are looking for and why are you interested along with your current status.

Photo is optional.
AS A REMINDER - Genuine responses only with the tasks mentioned above would be appreciated.

Can someone please explain why the pickleball and tennis courts at [local park] are LOCKED at noon/1pm on a beautiful Saturday in September!? It is baffling that these courts would not be open dawn to dusk when the weather is nice. What is the harm in people playing an outdoor sport on a public court?!

I live in a small community that is 62 and over and disabled. Recently our community has been taken over by a new company which no one within our facility has seen, met, or even heard about. We only know of the name, and yet that doesn’t even to seem to be the truth! Everyone here is a little scared because we don’t know what’s going on and from inside information everyone’s checks have not been cashed for rent. We have no one in the office and no maintenance! There are three communities that this supposed company bought and they too are in arms about the situation. Our grass is getting a little out of hand, and being a disabled community, people are a bit scared, and no one has any answers for us. Please help us!

STRANGE
BUT TRUE
By Lucie WinborneAutumn marks the time to transition from the hot days of summer to the chilly weather of winter. As people remove sweaters and long pants from storage, cleaning up their yards also may be on their minds. Fall is a season of beautiful foliage, but once that magical color show is over, thousands of leaves have fallen to the ground, necessitating a few weekends’ worth of yard work. Some homeowners may be on the lookout for environmentally friendly ways to handle autumn yard work, and thankfully there are plenty of eco-friendly ways to tackle such tasks.
Leaves cascading down from trees indicate the arrival of autumn. However, colorful and awe-inspiring autumn leaves can be a hazard if left to lie on the ground too long.
Fallen leaves form a dense insulator to protect trees’ roots and prevent competing plants from growing. Decomposing leaves also provide nutrients for the tree. But wet leaves can be a safety hazard and leaves left on the lawn through the winter can pose a threat to the grass. These are just a couple of reasons why so much effort is placed on leaf clean-up in the fall.

RAKING LEAVES: While raking leaves might not jump out at you as a great way to spend a nice fall afternoon, families often find raking leaves together soon turns into a fun day in the yard. Build leaf piles and let the kids jump in, and then do it again. When raking, encourage kids to collect some colorful leaves and set them aside. Once the raking is done, you can then enjoy making some homemade crafts with the leaves you and your youngsters just collected.

HOW WOMEN CAN KEEP THEIR CAREERS GOING FORWARD
Define career expectations. Defining career expectations early on can be beneficial in various ways. Such expectations can guide career choices and provide a road map that women can utilize to stay the professional course. This can help women make decisions about their careers when they come to forks in the road. For example, if a path to promotion seems blocked, women can examine their established career expectations to help them decide if it’s time to seek new employment. Defining career expectations also can help women effectively communicate with mentors about their goals, and mentors can then use that information when offering guidance. Expectations need not be concrete, and it’s likely they will change over time. But they can serve as an important foundation for anyone from young female professionals to experienced executives looking to make changes or determine the next step in their careers.
