DID YOU KNOW? Designed to serve as the unofficial kickoff to the holiday charitable giving season, Giving Tuesday is celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving in the United States. While events like Black Friday and Cyber Monday have become incredibly popular among holiday shoppers looking for great deals on gifts for their loved ones, Giving Tuesday aims to capitalize on the holiday spirit of giving by celebrating philanthropy and promoting charitable giving. Giving Tuesday began in 2012 and was the brainchild of the team at the Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact at New York City’s 92nd Street Y, which has brought people together around the values of service and giving since 1874. Nonprofits, civic organizations, for-profit businesses and corporations, individuals, and families have participated in Giving Tuesday since its inception. In 2015, with the cooperation of donors, volunteers and organizations in 71 countries, the Giving Tuesday movement raised nearly $117 million. More information about Giving Tuesday is available at www.GivingTuesday.org.

Share the story of Christmas The Gospels of Mark and Luke offer differing accounts of the birth of Jesus Christ. Both indicate that Jesus was born to Mary, who was engaged to Joseph, a carpenter. Mary became pregnant through immaculate conception, as she was a virgin when visited by an angel who informed her that she was to carry God’s son. At the time of Christ’s birth, all Jewish people had to be counted by Roman soldiers for tax purposes. That required people to return to their places of birth. As a result, Mary and Joseph set out on an arduous journey to Bethlehem. Upon arriving in Bethlehem, inns had no vacancies, but Mary and Joseph were given shelter in a stable where Jesus was ultimately born.

Veterans Day Livonia students wrote messages to Veterans which were displayed at the American Legion Post 283 luncheon after the 11am ceremony at Livonia Library. Nice speech CC. Thank you Stacey and Mike for bringing and setting out the sheets. Thank you to all the students for the messages and drawings, especially Abigail for the long, touching message with such beautiful handwriting! It was very much appreciated to honor the Veterans on Veterans Day!! God Bless everyone and God Bless America.
Grateful for huge hearts! Two weeks ago I posted a need in the “Give & Take” section for unused cards with envelopes to send to participants in our Catholic Charities of Buffalo older adult programs in Genesee, Orleans and Erie Counties. So many wanted to help and we want to say a HUGE THANK YOU! We received so many donations of cards that our storage area is at capacity! I apologize that I wasn’t able to individually respond to every call left as there were so many. Those whose cards weren’t able to be donated, please consider offering them to a skilled nursing facility or adult day program where they can be used to brighten the day of an older adult who may be spending their birthdays and holidays without those they love. The big hearts of people in our WNY community make us so proud to do the work we do to serve those in need.
Free School Supplies and Meals The budget for the [local school] District has been approved for 20232024, which includes supplies and free meals for all students. I had three children attend [local school] and had to purchase all their school supplies and meals. Now I’m a Senior Citizen on Social Security with a fixed income, and I should not have to pay for these free supplies and meals. Voters, compare your 2022 taxes with 2023 taxes. My school taxes have gone up 21%, yet Social Security only went up 3.2%. Why should Senior Citizens have to pay so much? We have already paid our share. The Superintendent and the School Board need to address this issue.
Plowing Fields Will farmers with tractors, especially big tractors, after leaving the field onto the roads, stop and move the huge chunks of mud left on the road. Some were over a foot and a half around. I saw numerous vehicles who had to maneuver around these. Oncoming traffic plus the damage to their vehicles could be serious. I went out with one other driver and cleared what we could off the driving surface. With all these home cameras, if something serious happens, I’m sure you would be responsible. Also, if you do, please don’t roll them down on homeowners lawns. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Shaggy Dogs Aren’t Impervious to Cold Weather
Echo Valley AUCTIONS 5810 Goodale Rd., Canandaigua (585) 394-4722 • Open 8am-5pm; Closed Sun. Now accepting quality consignments, please call.
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: On my morning walks, I’ve noticed that someone in a house down the street puts their dog outside, tied to the porch railing, with only a pan of water. They stay out there all morning. Now that the weather has turned cold, I still see this dog tied up every morning outside. Even with a shaggy coat, the dog is shivering. What can I do to stop this? -- Francesca W., via email

DEAR FRANCESCA: If this person isn’t someone you know, and you’re nervous about knocking on their door to talk to them about it, then contact the animal control department for your town, city or county. If you live in an area where there is no animal control unit, call the nearest shelter or Humane Society to make a report. In cold temperatures, even temps above freezing, dogs can suffer a cold injury. Their paws and noses -- any exposed skin -- are at risk for frostbite. Hypothermia can be deadly, or it can permanently impair their immune system and overall health. A thick coat doesn’t provide as much protection from the cold as one might think. Many cities have laws against leaving pets out in extreme cold or heat. And tying up a dog outside, even for a few hours, is also unacceptable. If no one else is saying anything about it, go ahead and make some noise by calling any organization that can help and finding out where you can go to make it happen even faster. Thank you for paying attention to and helping that dog out. Readers, have you dealt with a similar situation? Tell us about it at ask@pawscorner.com.

Poll ended 11-14-2023 According to House Beautiful, in Victorian times, Christmas trees were traditionally set up and decorated quite late in December, often on Christmas Eve. Today, the marketing blitz seems to start at or before Halloween. Psychologists say decorating early spikes people’s happy hormone, dopamine, so perhaps decorations help make/keep people happy longer. If you decorate for Christmas, when do you decorate your home? 11.1% Early November 48.1% After Thanksgiving 11.1% Early December 7.4% Christmas Eve 22.2% Whenever I feel in the mood

There is great power in being a teacher. Teachers help grow and inspire the youth to become the best versions of themselves, whatever that may be or look like. They work hard each and every day even after the school bell rings. Now, more than ever, we need young people to enter the field of education. Future Teachers of America is an organization that helps future educators prepare for the classroom and become a part of a professional community. Through mentorship and teaching opportunities, they help teachers hone their skills and become wonderful educators. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

EASY ‘GREEN’ THANKSGIVING IDEAS Shop locally and organically. When shopping for Thanksgiving dinner, choose local produce, poultry and grains whenever possible. Resist the urge to buy more than you need as well. Skip some of the less-popular dishes that are used only to make the table seem full. Buy a small turkey or think about only serving turkey breasts, which tend to be the most popular cuts of the bird. Use reusable shopping bags to carry items home and reduce waste even further.

Student of the World: Berdjouhi Esmerian BY DENISE THOMPSON SLAUGHTER
B
orn to Armenian parents in Alexandria, Egypt, Berdjouhi Esmerian came to the United States at the age of thirty. Berdjouhi has always loved to write and, when she retired, she began working on her memoirs. So Many Homelands: Memories of a Daughter of the Armenian Diaspora was published just before the pandemic shutdown and was favorably reviewed recently in Lake Affect Magazine. Some of Berdjouhi’s stories have appeared in anthologies published by Writers and Books in Rochester and in the journal Blue Lyra Review. She also has co-authored, with three friends, According to Us: Four Older Women Tell Their Stories. She writes mostly of her life while growing up in the Middle East, from Egypt to Lebanon, during many historical events.
Although each of her parents’ families were wise enough to emigrate from their native Armenian homeland to Egypt in 1910—five years before the Armenian Genocide began and a couple decades before Berdjouhi’s birth—they did lose relatives in the extended genocide. In a gasp-out-loud episode in her book, Berdjouhi’s uncle had tragic timing when he stopped off in post-Ottoman Turkey to visit relatives on his return to the U.S. from Egypt. Just after his arrival in Turkey, the massacres there began, and, as a result of the upheaval, he was not allowed to re-board the ship because his passport showed he had been born on what was now Turkish soil, so he was considered a Turkish citizen. He was killed in Smyrna in Turkey’s 1922 massacre of Armenians and Greeks before he could ever get out of the country. Berdjouhi was six and living in Alexandria, Egypt, when the Second World War began, and remembers air raids, bombings, and casualties. After their home was destroyed, the family moved to Cairo. This would not be the last time the Esmerians relocated to flee violent political crises. To this day, Berdjouhi’s chest tightens up whenever she hears fireworks or other loud noises that remind her of anti-aircraft guns.
GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111
In Egypt, Berdjouhi attended a secular German school and, a year later, Armenian schools in Cairo and Alexandria. These schools taught multiple languages—Arabic, French, and English were all required subjects—and Berdjouhi discovered she had a gift for languages and a particular fondness for English. Her father, who owned a tool-and-die workshop, was unusual for the time and region in that he wanted his daughter to be as well educated as her brother and able to support herself if necessary. So her education was rounded off at a Scottish school in Egypt and, after the Suez Crisis in Egypt, in Lebanon at Beirut’s Haigazian College and then the Beirut College for Women (now Lebanese American University). After graduation, she hurried away to escape the civil war starting there. Sadly, she was unable to make it home in time to say goodbye to her father, who died in Egypt in April of 1960. Later, she went back to Lebanon for graduate studies at the American University of Beirut. Berdjouhi then taught English at girls’ schools in Cairo and Beirut. Finally, but not easily, she was able to join her brother, who had been able to come to the United States. She lived in New Jersey with her aunt and uncle, working in clerical positions at Western Electric for a couple years, then moved to Rochester to live near her newly married brother in a tiny apartment on University Avenue. After discovering that schools were not willing to hire a foreigner as an English teacher, even though her English was more proficient than many Americans’, Berdjouhi quickly got a job as a proofreader at The Lawyers’ Co-operative Publishing Company, where she would gradually work her way up to a department manager position. The plans for Berdjouhi’s mother to join her had been delayed when Egypt’s President Nasser established a rule that females could not leave the country until they reached 60 years of age. Finally, though, in May 1968, Mrs. Esmerian arrived to live with her daughter. These bare-bones biographical facts barely begin to cover Berdjouhi’s life, though, as they leave out so much about her family, relationships, and more personal experiences. They leave out her dignified bearing, small stature, sweet smile, philosophical nature, and her warm kindly personality. Now in independent senior living in a 55+ community where she organized a writers’ group, Berdjouhi recently turned 90. In spite of struggling with vision and hearing issues, she is still clear-thinking and active in her apartment community, where she is considered a treasure. As she continues going through boxes of papers that she brought with her when she sold her house in Brighton, she is considering putting together some earlier writings in order to make another book about her many thoughts and experiences.

SEPTIC TANK PUMPING CHRISTMAS TREE VARIETIES Living Christmas tree, which refers to those with their roots still intact, are popular among eco-conscious holiday enthusiasts. That’s because living trees can be promptly planted after they’ve served their purpose indoors. Opt for a moderately sized tree, as root balls on larger trees can be heavy and difficult to move. Living trees can typically be kept indoors for around seven to 10 days before they will need to be returned outside. Move such trees to a sheltered outdoor area for one to two weeks so they can reacclimate to the climate. So long as the ground is not frozen, trees can then be planted when the reacclimation period ends. Better Homes and Gardens suggests selecting a mild day to plant the tree.

– MARKET
A TURKEY ALTERNATIVE FOR INTIMATE THANKSGIVING MEALS Serves 6 to 8 12 chicken thighs (about 3 to 4 pounds), bone in Salt and freshly ground black pepper 4 tablespoons unsalted butter 2 tablespoons olive oil 6 shallots, minced 6 cloves garlic, minced 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar 11/2 cups dry white wine 1 tablespoon tomato paste 11/2 cups chicken stock, preferably homemade 1/2 cup chopped Italian parsley Season the chicken generously with salt and pepper to taste. In a large, deep skillet (big enough to hold all chicken fairly close together; or use two skillets), melt 3 tablespoons of the butter in 1 tablespoon of the olive oil over medium-high heat. Brown the chicken for about 8 minutes, turning so both sides get nicely browned. Transfer the chicken to a deep, broad, ovenproof casserole that can go from the oven to the table. Remove the skillet from the heat and pour off most of the fat. Preheat the oven to 375 F. Place the skillet back over medium heat and add the remaining 1 tablespoon butter and 1 tablespoon olive oil. Add the shallots and garlic and cook for about 1 minute, or until they become translucent. Add the vinegar and wine, and stir up the crispy bits that have stuck to the bottom of the pan. Allow the liquids to cook down a bit, stirring occasionally, for about 8 minutes. Whisk in the tomato paste and let the sauce simmer and condense, about 5 minutes more. Then add the chicken stock, a little at a time. Keep stirring to mix well. Pour the sauce over the chicken. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes until the chicken is very tender, turning the chicken pieces halfway through, so that both sides are infused with the sauce. Remove one thigh and cut into it to make sure it is done and no red juices flow from the cut.

Here’s a Tip OK, I’ll say it: I love tradition, but sometimes I want to mix it up for Thanksgiving dinner. I keep the main dishes the same as they always are, but I add my drama in the details. For instance, mix your choice of herbs into a stick of softened butter. Using a plastic baggie with the corner cut off or a decorating bag, pipe the herbed butter onto a butter dish. Refrigerate and enjoy the oohs and ahs. -- JoAnn “In the week before Thanksgiving, have a leftovers day and get all those bits and pieces out of the refrigerator. It will make it easier to clean so you’ll have room for the turkey and the sides.” -- S.T. in South Carolina “For easier cooking, when making large holiday meals, simply choose two side dishes that can be oven cooked in the same amount of time at an average temperature. I like one or two that can be cooked in the microwave as well.” (c) 2023 King Features Synd., Inc.

M any people count their blessings on Thanksgiving. Few, how ever, count their calories. Overindulging at the dinner table is a Thanksgiving tradition, and often paves the w ay for a season of poor nutritional habits w ith longlasting ramifications. The American Council on Exercise says that the average adult consumes 3,000 calories and 229 grams of fat at a typical Thanksgiving meal. That is w ell above the USDA-recommended guidelines of 2,000 calories and 65 grams of fat that most adults should consume in an entire day. W ith so many options available on the Thanksgiving buffet table, it is easy to see how overeating is commonplace. Rather than w earing elasticw aisted pants and succumbing to too many fattening foods, individuals can make smart food substitutions that w on’t compromise taste but w ill cut calorie intake. Welcoming new patients! TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
How to Distinguish Heart Disease Symptoms From Panic Attacks ---
25% OFF ALL TREATMENT FOR ALL VETERANS.
DEAR DR. ROACH: How can you tell with at least a moderate degree of certainty that you might really have a heart or blood pressure problem, as opposed to just having an anxiety attack that is less serious? -- D.S. ANSWER: A panic attack is an abrupt change in mental state. They are usually unexpected, sometimes with or without identifiable triggers. Symptoms of a panic attack vary from person to person, but among the most common are feelings of heart palpitations; sweating; trembling or shaking; shortness of breath; chest pain or discomfort; dizziness; numbness or a “pins and needles” feeling; abdominal pain or nausea; feeling abnormally hot or cold; feeling detached from oneself or from reality; and a fear of dying, losing control or “going crazy.” Most of us have had some of these feelings from time to time, and some of these symptoms are identical to ones of heart disease, specifically of angina pectoris -- the classic symptom of poor blood flow to the heart. There are many conditions, both medical and psychiatric, that can cause these symptoms as well, so acquiring a moderate degree of certainty isn’t always easy. A very careful history exam helps. With chest pain due to heart disease, for example, symptoms are commonly brought on by exertion; whereas with a panic disorder, there might not be a trigger, or it may be triggered by psychological stress. Some people have highly specific triggers, such as open spaces or needles. Some people can trigger a panic attack just by worrying that they are going to have one. The time course of the symptoms can be very helpful. With a panic attack, the attack starts, and chest discomfort (for example) will then occur. In people with heart disease, chest discomfort starts, and then people will get anxious. I had a wise cardiology professor who told me to always consider heart disease even if a person’s history is suggestive of a panic attack. I generally check their blood pressure and order an electrocardiogram, blood testing (including thyroid tests) and sometimes other tests when considering the diagnosis of a panic attack. There is very effective treatment available for people with panic disorder (people with recurrent unexpected panic attacks that lead to avoidant behaviors), both through therapy and medication. But your question implies that being pretty sure of the diagnosis is wise before dismissing the possibility of cardiac disease or other medical diseases. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Nov. 19, 1915, British airman Richard Bell Davies performs a daring rescue, swooping down in his plane to whisk a downed fellow pilot from behind the Turkish lines. The British government awarded him the Victoria Cross.
QUALITIES TO LOOK FOR IN A POST-RETIREMENT JOB Pressure-free: Regardless of what retirees did for a living prior to calling it a career, chances are they dealt with work-related stress. In fact, the American Stress Institute reports that 83 percent of workers in the United States suffer from work-related stress, while Statistics Canada reports that 62 percent of Canadian workers say work is their main source of stress. After a lifetime of confronting work-related stress, individuals who want to work in retirement should look for pressure-free opportunities. This is an important quality, as the ASI indicates that stress has been linked to increased rates of heart attack, hypertension and other disorders.
* On Nov. 21, 1934, teenager Ella Fitzgerald wins Amateur Night at Harlem’s Apollo Theater. Putting her name in the hat on a bet, she’d originally planned a dance number. History was made when she changed her mind and sang “The Object of My Affection.” * On Nov. 22, 1988, the Northrop B-2 “stealth” bomber is shown publicly for the first time at Air Force Plant 42 in Palmdale, California. Although the aircraft had a wingspan of nearly half a football field, its radar signal was as negligible as that of a bird. The B-2 also successfully evaded infrared, sound detectors and the visible eye.
