Livingston County children enroll at this summer enrichment program at SUNY Geneseo to develop a sense of self-confidence, self-efficacy, and accomplishment through engaging, inquiry-based, provocative learning experiences that value the student, teacher, and the environment as equal contributors to the experience.

Has antibacterial and antifungal properties: According to the Honey Research Unit at the University of Waikato in New Zealand, honey is antibacterial. Honey will not foster growth of these microorganisms because it contains small amounts of hydrogen peroxide. Because of these properties, some people say that honey can help disorders such as ulcers and bacterial gastroenteritis, or other conditions where fungi and bacteria grow unchecked.

Kudos to you! Learning that the long-time GVPS Circulation Manager is retiring I feel the need to send my best wishes for her retirement and many, many thanks for a job well done. I’ve had occasion, a few times in the past, to pass on questions to her (I was a long-time employee at GVPS). Each time the situation was taken care of promptly. Good luck to you, Shari! Audrey What a wonderful gesture A big thank you to the thoughtful gentlemen who handed out cards at ALDIs in Geneseo wishing us a wonderful Thanksgiving and tucking $50 bills inside. I was blown away. I’m so thankful to see that wonderful and selfless people are present in a hostile, at times, world. Bless you! You made our thanksgiving!

Our Turn to Pay it Backward I was disappointed to read the rant from my fellow senior citizen complaining about paying school taxes. I need to remind the writer that when our children were in school, seniors citizens at that time paid to support them. The medicare and social security benefits that we receive come from the taxes that current workers pay. Think about how our lives would be affected if young people questioned why they should support baby boomers and refused to pay their medicare and social security taxes. Current workers are paying it forward to help us and it is our duty to pay it backward to help the students of today become successful productive citizens. Why can’t we get along? Every week it seems that there is somebody complaining about their neighbors. Why can’t we all follow the Golden Rule of treating others as you would want to be treated? Some of the things people do to their neighbors are inconsiderate while some of the things people complain about their neighbors doing are trivial. How about thinking about your actions and how it may affect your neighbors before you act. I’m always touched by the neighbors who mow lawns and do snow removal to make their neighbors lives easier as it is evidence of how our neighborhoods should be. Why don’t we all begin next week with the goal of making our neighborhood a better place? GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am concerned, and have been for some time, about whether my prescriptions that arrive by mail are compromised, since they sit in vehicles with the sun beating through the windows, heating them up. Also, the plastic bottles in which the prescriptions are stored give off toxic emissions as they “broil” in the sun. The instructions that come with some of the meds warn about heat as well. My pharmacist told me that heat does affect a medication’s effectiveness negatively. So, if this is true, millions of us are taking important medications that are basically not doing the job. After all, the meds that arrive at pharmacies come in hot vehicles, too. What’s your take? -- J.Z. ANSWER: All medicines should be stored in a cool, dark place, as direct sunlight and heat can damage their effectiveness. Studies have proven that medicines sent by mail order can indeed get out of their published temperature range. While this happens most often in mailboxes, I understand your point about medications “broiling” in hot temperatures during the shipment itself. Liquid medicines, hormones and nitroglycerin are among the most sensitive. Medicines that need to be dosed exactly, such as transplant rejection medicines, biologicals, and seizure medicines, are also particularly likely to cause problems if they are damaged during shipping. Although some medicines are supposed to be shipped in packaging with cold packs and insulation, this isn’t always the case. I recommend using a local pharmacy, but many people have prescription plans that require them to use mail order. Many states have requirements about customers using retail pharmacies. If that’s not the case for you, try to make sure that the medicine will be delivered when you are available to receive it. If you have a temperature-sensitive medicine, such as the ones I mention above (you can ask your pharmacist about others), request that your mail-order pharmacy sends it in special packaging during warm weather. You might also consider having them shipped to a place where they will be put into a temperature-controlled environment right away.

SEPTIC TANK PUMPING HOW TO HEAL FROM MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES THAT AROSE DURING THE PANDEMIC Embrace healthy behaviors. During the pandemic, many individuals, even those devoted to healthy living prior to 2020, found it difficult to continue engaging in behaviors and activities that promoted their overall health. Embracing these behaviors, which can include eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly and getting sufficient sleep, improves individuals’ ability to cope with stress. Re-establishing old routines also can return a sense of structure to daily life that might have gone missing over the last two years.

SHADE-TOLERANT PLANTS COMPLETE LANDSCAPES Plants need sunlight to thrive and grow, but some need less sunlight than others. People who find their landscapes are less supportive to sun-loving plants can choose from a variety of shade-tolerant plants, shrubs and trees. Shade tolerance refers to a plant’s ability to withstand low levels of light. Certain plants have adapted this feature to survive in the wild. Plants that grow at the base of forest floors, for example, will get less sunlight than others outside of the tree canopy. Such adaptations enable a wide variety of foliage to grow even though they are not exposed to much sunlight. While sun-loving plants often have broad leaves and expend significant energy to capture sunlight for photosynthesis, shade-tolerant plants expend less energy and tend to be more efficient consumers of soil nutrients and sunlight. Penn State Extension’s Plant and Pests division says the amount of shade a plant is growing under will directly affect the density of the foliage and the plant’s flowering and fruiting characteristics. Blending shade-tolerant plants into the landscape can be an effective use of space. Before choosing plants for an existing landscape, it’s important to assess the level of shade or sun the plants will receive. Once homeowners understand which type of shade they are dealing with, they can then visit plant nurseries and select their plants. Most greenery comes with care instructions that include recommendations regarding the amount of shade/sunlight the plant will need to do well. If further assistance is needed, a knowledgeable employee can make suggestions based on landscape needs. Shade-tolerant plants can make welcome additions to the landscape, offering greenery and color in the darker areas of a property. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

Home improvement projects can be expensive. While the size and complexity of a project will affect how expensive the project is, homeowners can expect to shell out a pretty penny when they renovate or remodel areas of their home. According to HomeAdvisor, an online resource for homeowners looking to connect with home improvement, maintenance and repair professionals, the average bathroom remodeling project costs $9,348, while the average home addition costs slightly less than $41,000. But renovation-minded homeowners need not reconsider their commitment to remodeling, as there are various ways to cut the costs associated with home improvement projects. One such way is for homeowners to pitch in and do some of the work themselves. Calculating labor costs can be difficult, as such costs can vary greatly depending on the project, the contractor and the amount of hired help that contractor intends to employ. However, some estimates suggest labor will account for anywhere from 25 to 50 percent of the overall cost of the project. So it’s no surprise that homeowners can save themselves substantial amounts of money by doing some of the work themselves. Homeowners who intend to do some of the labor themselves should discuss this plan with contractors during the vetting process. Before hiring a contractor, make sure homeowners’ expected labor contributions are clearly defined in the contract. It’s best to leave the most complicated parts of a project to the professionals.

I used to visit and revisit it a dozen times a day, and stand in deep contemplation over my vegetable progeny with a love that nobody could share or conceive of who had never taken part in the process of creation. It was one of the most bewitching sights in the world to observe a hill of beans thrusting aside the soil, or a rose of early peas just peeping forth sufficiently to trace a line of delicate green. ~Nathaniel Hawthorne, Mosses from and Old Manse

DID YOU KNOW? Choking is a leading cause of unintentional death in infants. Young children not can choke on food as well as objects they put in their mouths while exploring the world around them. Parents of young children and hosts who intend to invite youngsters into their homes can learn how to respond when kids appear to be choking. The Mayo Clinic recommends the following approach when tending to children under the age of 1, which differs from the steps necessary to address choking instances in older children and adults. · Assume a seated position and hold the infant facedown on your forearm, which is resting on your thigh. Support the infant’s head and neck with your hand, and place the head lower than the trunk. · Thump the infant gently but firmly five times on the middle of the back using the heel of your hand. The combination of gravity and the back blows should release the blocking object. Keep your fingers pointed up to avoid hitting the infant in the back of the head. · Turn the infant face up on your forearm, resting on your thigh with the head lower than the trunk if the infant still isn’t breathing. Using two fingers placed at the center of the infant’s breastbone, give five quick chest compressions. Press down about 11/2 inches, and let the chest rise again in between each compression. · Repeat the back blows and chest thrusts if breathing doesn’t resume. Call for emergency medical help. · Begin infant CPR if one of these techniques opens the airway but the infant doesn’t resume breathing.

TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE (NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips: Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches. Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home. Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place!

• Breakwalls • Jacking and Leveling We will do permits for you. Ask about our portfolio of past jobs. DRAFTY WINDOWS ARE AN ISSUE Drafty windows make homes less comfortable by allowing cold air in during the winter and warm air in when temperatures rise. But comfort is not the only concern associated with leaky windows, as such fixtures also can have a negative impact on the environment. Leaky windows require heating and cooling systems to work harder to keep home interiors comfortable during times of the year when temperatures can be extreme. In the dead of winter, a leaky window will force a home’s inhabitants to turn up the thermostat, which only increases energy consumption and energy bills. The same scenario plays out in summer, when leaky windows allow hot air in, leading homeowners to lower the temperature of air conditioning units so everyone inside is cool and comfortable.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment Visit consignment stores: Consignment shops and Goodwill(R) stores are popular places to buy preowned items. These stores take donations or offer items for sale on consignment, which means once sold the person who provided the item gets a portion of the sale. When browsing the racks of these stores, it’s possible to discover highend items mixed in with less expensive items. Shoppers may find designer handbags and clothing for much less than they would sell at retail, especially if the pieces are one or two seasons old. Relying on these stores to supplement classic wardrobe pieces is cost-effective and beneficial to the environment. If you regularly shop consignment stores, you can develop a rapport with the shopkeeper, who may alert you when new items are available.

RV BUYERS’ GUIDE Usage frequency: When considering an RV, think about how often it will be used and where it will be stored when not in use. Garage storage may be challenging on a larger rig, and some housing communities frown upon parking RVs in driveways. This may affect the size you choose as well as the features you need, according to KOA, the RV camp site leader.

Here’s a Tip * Don’t throw away that damaged garden hose. Here are three great uses: 1. Use as a weather strip along the bottom of your garage door. 2. Use sections to protect the blades on your ice skates. 3.Use as a safety edge on your saws in the shop. Cut to fit and slip it over the blade. * “If a small screw keeps coming loose on something, remove it, paint it with clear nail polish and rescrew quickly. This often does the trick. Makes it more grippy.” -- I.W. in Minnesota * Defog your mirror with shaving cream. Smear it over the entire surface and then wipe away with a clean towel. Keep cleaning until clear. It works for at least two weeks -- NO FOG! (c) 2023 King Features Synd., Inc.

Planning pointers for holiday hosts Hosting is a significant part of the holiday season. From late November until New Year's Day, millions of people across North America welcome friends and family into their homes. Whether you're hosting a small gathering with locally based loved ones or welcoming distant relatives into your home for several days, the following are some planning pointers to ensure your home is ready and guests feel welcome this holiday season. • Hire a local cleaning service. The holiday season can be hectic. Holiday functions at school, office parties, community events, and more fill up social schedules between late November and early January. Busy social schedules leave little time for house cleaning, which is a must before welcoming guests into a home. A local cleaning service can clean the whole house for hosts welcoming overnight guests or focus on a few popular entertaining areas if party guests will be going home at the end of the night. • Get an early head count. Ask party invitees and prospective overnight guests to RSVP early enough to ensure you can accommodate everyone's needs. Additional seating may be required for holiday parties, while hosts may need to arrange for extra bedding for overnight guests. The earlier you know who's coming, and potentially staying, the more time you have to ensure you can accommodate everyone. • Rent items from a local party supply store. When hosting large gatherings, a local party supply store can be the place to go for decorations, seating, food trays and utensils, and more. Such establishments also may rent specialty supplies like outdoor heat lamps for cold weather parties or tents and outdoor tables and chairs in areas where the weather is warm during the holiday season. Hosts can typically rent everything they need to host the party, saving them the expense of buying items that may just sit in storage the rest of the year. • Arrange for transportation. Whether guests are flying in from distant lands or local friends, relatives or neighbors stopping in for the night, hosts can arrange for transportation to and from their homes to ensure everyone arrives safely and makes it home without incident. Pick overnight guests up at the airport so they see a friendly face upon arrival. When hosting gatherings with local family and friends, encourage others to share how they intend to get home and recruit designated drivers if you intend to serve alcohol. Hosts can take heed of these planning pointers so guests feel welcome and have a good time this holiday season. TF23B455 GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

DID YOU KNOW? Getting out and about is a vital component of many seniors’ daily lives, but it’s important that aging men and women recognize how much exercise is healthy for them. The Department of Health & Human Services notes that adults need a mix of physical activity to stay healthy. That mix should be a combination of moderate-intensity aerobic activities, which can include golfing, swimming and even gardening, and muscle strengthening activities like weightlifting that make the muscles work harder than usual. The DHHS recommends adults combine 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week with at least two days of muscle-strengthening activities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that these guidelines are safe for individuals who are 65 and older, generally fit and have no limiting health conditions. Individuals who do not fit that criteria should consult with their physicians before beginning a new exercise regimen, as it’s possible that they could be putting their health at considerable risk if they attempt to follow guidelines designed for people who are generally fit. It’s also important that healthy seniors avoid overdoing it in regard to exercise. Though the DHHS suggestions are the minimum recommendations, going too far beyond those guidelines without first consulting a physician could increase seniors’ risk for injury, illness or even death.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Hold That Turkey Leg: It’s the Annual Thanksgiving Pet Safety Brief DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Can you remind me what foods are unsafe to give to pets? I know onions are bad for dogs, but I’m not clear on other ingredients. My dog loves scraps from the table, and I want to make sure my Thanksgiving dinner guests don’t feed him something dangerous. -- Manuel C., San Antonio, Texas DEAR MANUEL: It may be difficult to keep tabs on all of your dinner guests, so consider placing your dog in a room or in his kennel during the meal and then rewarding him after with some tasty leftovers. When he does get his treat, make sure that it doesn’t include the following ingredients: onions, garlic, raisins or avocado. Turkey is fine; take the skin off to remove extra salt and seasonings that might upset his stomach. Avoid feeding him stuffing. The mashed potatoes should be plain, and hold the gravy. A little apple or pumpkin pie should be fine, but keep him away from chocolate. And try to limit the amount of fat in the leftovers, because too much can cause some messy digestive problems.

IT PAYS TO USE CRATES WHEN TRAINING PUPPIES Many dog owners, particularly those who have never before had a dog, may hesitate to employ crates to train their puppies. That’s understandable, as on the surface it can seem cruel or inhumane to confine a living animal to a cage. However, the AKC notes that dogs are den animals that naturally seek out canine caves for security. That’s true whether dog owners provide crates for their puppies or not. So while humans may see crates as cruel, dogs very likely view their crates as secure places where they can go if they get scared or feel skittish. In fact, according to the AKC, dogs’ perception of crates is one reason why dog owners typically find it relatively easy to get their dogs to adjust to crates and ultimately enjoy them. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

The same rules apply to cats, by the way. Because they’re small, they may have a more severe reaction to ingredients like grapes, avocados or onions. It can be difficult to keep track of what your pet is eating during the busy holiday season, especially during big meals. That’s why I recommend placing pets in a separate room until people are done eating and the food is put away out of reach. You still need to control their diet, and you can’t always catch Aunt Gladys sneaking peanut butter cups to the dog. Enjoy your holiday, and thanks for keeping your pet safe!

Webster’s Jamie Buss and Colleen Bedford celebrate 10 years of Making Spirits Bright BY SUZIE WELLS

W

ebster residents, Jamie Buss and Colleen Bedford, provide winter gear, household necessities, and gifts to families in need each holiday season through their allvolunteer organization, Making Spirits Bright (MSB). Begun in 2014 operating out of Buss and Bedford’s basements, Buss says, “Colleen and I began MSB as a means to give back to our community, to honor those with hardships we may never fully understand, to provide joy and relief to those who need it, and to teach our kids and others that life is richer when we all look out for each other. MSB is a small piece of a much bigger picture, but an area in which I think Colleen and I are making a difference, one family at a time.” She explains that she recognizes the blessings in her life and vows to do good. In the human and social services field for years, Buss also serves as Fund Development Officer for the Urban League of Rochester. She says, “I challenge myself every day to become a better, more effective ally, and consider it an honor and a privilege to provide hope and empower others to be the best versions of themselves, for themselves and their families.” Buss says she lives daily by the words, “If you can do good, you should.” She says, “‘Tis the season for giving and that’s exactly what Making Spirits Bright is all about.” Their holiday Adopt-a-Family organization celebrates its anniversary this year, marking ten years of gift-giving, joy-spreading, and serving families in need throughout the greater Rochester community. In those ten years, they’ve helped 500 families. In 2022, Buss says they served 48 families, and this year, their goal is 65 families.

lists, “ensuring everyone’s needs are met and making sure each person has some fun things to open too!” MSB also provides cleaning supplies and toiletries to each family, as those items are not covered through government assistance. Buss says they always seek these items. Volunteers can wrap gifts at their donation center; sign up through the signups on their Facebook page after Thanksgiving. “We could not do what we do without the generosity of the greater Rochester community,” Buss says. “We are able to make such a collective impact because our donor base is so strong, and we couldn’t be more grateful for the support these last ten years.”

Over the past ten years, the organization grew as the needs of local families and the support of the community grew. Operating out of donated space in Baytowne Plaza since 2020, MSB is a referral-based organization, with area schools and social service organizations identifying families to serve each year. Since the schools and organizations know their families’ needs best, Buss says, MSB can make as big an impact as possible. With families identified, each fills out an information form including needs and wants, and MSB then works their magic to find groups to donate the needed items. Buss says Making Spirits Bright has space for all to help, no matter your budget. She says, “Financial constraints should never prevent anyone from doing good. Equity is at the forefront of everything we do. It’s what our organization was built upon and it’s incredibly important to us that everyone can help us serve our community.”

Anyone interested in adopting a family, wrapping gifts, or organizing a drive for Making Spirits Bright should please email thegoodnessinitiative@gmail.com. Follow the great work they do on Facebook at www.facebook.com/makingspiritsbright. Happy Holidays to all! Colleen Bedford (left) and Jamie Buss (right)

Some donor individuals, groups, and companies adopt a full family’s wish list, while some adopt an individual, including 7-8 requested/needed items. Making Spirits Bright also maintains a Community List, a budget-conscious way for individuals to help, purchasing specific items for the families assisted. Buss and Bedford use monetary donations to purchase outstanding items on families’

Speak up about your stress. As noted, stress at the workplace can affect workers’ performance, which employers are looking to optimize. Workers can speak to their employers if they feel their work environments are conducive to stress. Work in tandem with an employer to develop timesaving strategies that make it easier to get work done on time. Supervisors may encourage employees to delegate more often, freeing up time to get their work done. Employers may also direct employees to wellness resources that can help them more effectively combat stress. The outcomes of such discussions may never be known if workers never take the initiative and speak up about their stress.

Chances are you can find skills that you honed in one or more jobs that translate into credentials that can be used on another. DID YOU KNOW? In a survey of 3,500 working professionals, Allied Van Lines found that 17 percent had relocated for a job. Roughly 50 percent of those who relocated did so for career advancement and/or more money, while 8 percent moved to be closer to family or for other relationship reasons. Moving is often characterized as stressful, and 31 percent of survey respondents who moved indicated that finding a home was the most challenging part of relocating for a job. Acclimating to a new community (29 percent), finding services such as utilities and medical care (13 percent) and making friends (12 percent) were also cited as some of the most challenging parts of relocating for a job. As difficult as relocating can be, 64 percent of those who had relocated expressed positive sentiments toward their job relocation, while just 7.5 percent harbored negative feelings about relocating (28 percent were neutral).
