PETS AND HOLIDAY GIFTING Furry, finned and feathered friends help make a house a home. These companions are more than just pets; they’re often cherished family members. So it should come as no surprise that, come the holidays, people want to lavish extra attention on their animals by way of presents. The American Pet Products Association says pet owners spend billions of dollars on their pets each year. The majority of pet owners plan to gift their pets on holidays such as Valentine’s Day, Halloween and Christmas. DogTime.com says that pet presents are not a North American phenomenon, either. Pet owners in the United Kingdom are expected to spend the equivalent of $46 U.S. per pet on gifts. While dog owners are more likely to buy their pets gifts, cat owners have been closing that gap over the years. Some pet parents even offer Christmas cards or hang Christmas stockings for their pets. According to data from PricewaterhouseCoopers, shoppers between the ages of 17 and 21 are willing to spend more than anyone else ($70) on holiday gifts for their pets. Gifting pets has become the norm, but various animal welfare organizations advise that giving companion animals as pets should be avoided. Pets given as gifts may be at a higher risk for surrender to shelters by families who miscalculated the amount of time and money that’s necessary to care for pets. Welcoming a pet into the family is often a personal decision, and one that should be weighed carefully by all members of the household. Tis the Season

A Visit from St. Nicholas BY CLEMENT CLARKE MOORE Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse; The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there; The children were nestled all snug in their beds; While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads; And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap, Had just settled our brains for a long winter's nap, When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash. The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow, Gave a lustre of midday to objects below, When what to my wondering eyes did appear, But a miniature sleigh and eight tiny rein-deer, With a little old driver so lively and quick, I knew in a moment he must be St. Nick. More rapid than eagles his coursers they came, And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name: "Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now Prancer and Vixen! On, Comet! on, Cupid! on, Donner and Blitzen! To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall! Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!" As leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky; So up to the housetop the coursers they flew With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too—
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof The prancing and pawing of each little hoof. As I drew in my head, and was turning around, Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound. He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot, And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot; A bundle of toys he had flung on his back, And he looked like a pedler just opening his pack. His eyes—how they twinkled! his dimples, how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, And the beard on his chin was as white as the snow; The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke, it encircled his head like a wreath; He had a broad face and a little round belly That shook when he laughed, like a bowl full of jelly. He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf, And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself; A wink of his eye and a twist of his head Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread; He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk, And laying his finger aside of his nose, And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose; He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight— “Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!”

STAY SAFE WHEN STRINGING HOLIDAY LIGHTS Lighting displays are one of the many things that help make the holiday season a special time of year. Often awe-inspiring, holiday lighting displays present a perfect opportunity for communities and individuals to showcase their festive sides.
For our Holiday Worship Services @ St. John’s Christmas Eve: Friday, 12/24 • 7:30PM Christmas Day: Saturday, 12/25 • 10 AM Sunday: Sunday, 12/26 • 10AM
Safety should always be a priority when stringing holiday lights both inside and outside a home. The National Fire Protection Association notes that, between 2009 and 2014, fire departments in the United States responded to an average of 210 home fires that started with Christmas trees per year. Lighting displays strung on home exteriors also can pose safety risks if homeowners do not exercise caution. Following some simple safety procedures when decorating with lights can ensure everyone enjoys a safe and happy holiday season.
We look forward to seeing you at Worship and celebrating the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ! St. John’s Lutheran Church • 153 Church Avenue, Farmington www.pumpkinhook.org • 315-986-3045

Many critics consider “Bullitt” to be one of the greatest action movies ever made, because of the seven-minute car chase through the streets of San Francisco.

DEAR DR. ROACH: A friend was given a test to see how long food stayed in her stomach after eating. She was told that it stayed only a short time before continuing its journey, a much shorter time than the average person. This was given as a reason for her obesity, that she experienced hunger sooner than most people. Does this really happen, and is there a way for her to manage it so that she can lose weight? -- G.J. ANSWER: A gastric emptying study is usually used to look for delayed gastric emptying, also called gastroparesis. It can be the result of several different types of nerve diseases, but especially diabetes. An abnormally rapid gastric emptying is also called dumping syndrome, and is often a problem after some types of gastric bypass surgeries. I did find a paper from the 1980s suggesting that obese people have shorter gastric emptying times. This was confirmed in a trial from 2015 looking at the diabetes drug exenatide (Byetta), which is sometimes used to help people lose weight, even if they do not have diabetes. Interestingly, exenatide was more likely to cause people to lose weight if they had faster gastric emptying times. I do not mean to suggest that fast gastric emptying is the only reason for your friend’s (or anyone else’s) weight problems. Obesity is a complex problem with no single cause or solution in most people. I am glad you wrote. I did not know about this research before, and it may be worth it for your friend to discuss a trial of exenatide with her doctor.

HOMETOWN PHOTOS Be careful, little eyes I love President Trump. You know what I hate? All the Biden flags and signs with FOUL language on them. I have a 9-yearold son and 6-year-old daughter who we are raising to be America-loving patriots. But when my daughter questions the meaning of the words on these flags, my blood boils. You do no service to our party or our innocent kids. You look uncouth and, yes, ignorant. Being a mom of kids in this insane world is hard enough without my own party letting me down. Please think of the little kids. Put yourself in the shoes of parents trying to protect innocence and decency.
S E V RA CMBB Raiders Coming from a “rival” school, I’ve just got to say how nice the people at the Football game in October were. They have an awesome facility. Lots of kids running around having fun and even the crew working in concessions were great. I’ve been to many schools we were playing against, and this one by far was the friendliest. You should be proud of your school and community.
Foreign aid correction To the person ranting about foreign aid to Israel at $10 million a day, your information is incorrect. The correct amount is approximately $3 million. I agree, still a lot of money, but my point is that if you are going to rant, please have your information correct.
Above & beyond The Humane Society of Livingston County would like to thank Dr. Ken Bedell and his staff at the Lima Veterinary Center for their outstanding service to us. He and his staff have gone above and beyond in their dealings with us. Whether it’s been dealing with an emergency or fitting in one more cat or kitten into their schedule, they are always friendly and willing to work with us for the betterment of Livingston County cats. We would not be able to do what we do without them, and we appreciate them tremendously.
Almost true The person who was lecturing on global warming started out okay, but then made the same mistake common to all the global warming believers including AOC and began blaming weather on global warming which meteorologists will tell you is not the case. They will know that the earth often goes through periods of temperature fluctuation. Previous to 50 years ago, how would we know if a polar cap melted? CA wildfires are the result of not doing proper forest management. Unlike global warming doomsayers, I am open to listening to ALL the science. We should work on things that are proven to cause global warming but not at the expense of our standard of living. Trust American ingenuity. Study carbon trapping instead of getting rid of gasoline engines with no real plan to replace them. Electric cars? CA’s power grid can’t meet the demands of their electric needs now, so how will they be able to charge the 14,894,912 cars currently registered in that state? Together we can find the answers! Pickup Spaces Why do stores place their pickup spaces as close to the store as possible? One [local store] in [local town] eliminated some handicap spots to install pickup spaces. If you are having your items delivered to your car, does it matter that the pickup spaces are close to the store? The pickup area could be at the back of the lot, and it wouldn’t matter to the customer. It is unfair to shoppers who need handicap spaces to have them moved so that people who stay in their cars can wait closer to the store.

“Yuletide” celebrates the birth of the Sun and also celebrates the “Mother” at the height of her “Greatness.” Pagans celebrate Yuletide in many ways; most will decorate a “Yuletide” tree, keep it in their homes until most of the leaves fall off, then burn the Yule log. In ancient Rome, the winter solstice was celebrated at the Feast of Saturnalia to honor Saturn, the god of agricultural bounty.
Can you draw the Winter Solstice Night Sky and Stonehenge? Stonehenge is one of the major structures associated with the Solstice, the other two being Newgrange and Maeshowe. Make sure to add lots of snowflakes and stars to showcase the night sky. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Looking For Unique Gifts? Think Springwater Amish Workshop!
PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Visiting Yap Dog Ruins Holidays DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My sisterin-law insists on bringing her yappy, ill-tempered lap dog, “Mitsi,” to our house every Christmas through New Year’s. Mitsi gets along with no one but her owner, frightens our two cats and barks at everyone in the house during dinner, nonstop. I love having my brother and his wife over, but Mitsi is making things hellish. How can I politely ask her to leave Mitsi in a kennel during visits? -- Barked Out in Birmingham DEAR BARKED OUT: I don’t know that there’s a way to tell your sisterin-law to leave her dog at home that would be taken well. Mitsi clearly is a full member of their family and travels with her. Can a compromise be reached instead? Ask her if Mitsi can be placed in a separate room during mealtimes while they are visiting. She’ll probably still bark, but at least it won’t be right in your ear. You also need to discuss how Mitsi is stressing out the cats. Sometimes people think it’s funny when a visiting dog chases the family pets around, but it’s not fun for those pets. It’s like having a schoolyard bully walk right into your home. Try to keep the discussion civil. Ultimately, you’ll have to decide what level of compromise to ask for in order to keep peace in your house, and you’ll have to be firm. Your sister-in-law takes her relationship with her dog seriously; she should respect your concerns as well. That discussion probably won’t be comfortable, but if Mitsi’s barking and bullying are making the holidays a living hell, you need to speak up. Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@pawscorner.com. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Christmas Dinner Happens on the Sly The annual Christmas dinner at the senior center was a wonderful event, mostly because it didn’t happen at all. The original plan -- seniors sitting in a cold parking lot outside the center to eat food that would stay hot for maybe one minute -- was ditched by means of a petition to board members. That petition mentioned the absolute folly of the whole outdoor dining idea. The board’s second plan was to host the dinner indoors, but for only one-third the number of guests, with clear Plexiglas shields on the tables, which would interfere with conversation. There was a snap, an awakening, an audible collective click -- and the seniors said NO. The former recreation-center supervisor, who had quit after too many snarling meetings about yoga classes masked versus unmasked, was brought back to open the rec center. He’d fled to his cabin in the woods, tossing the keys to others, to sit out the insanity, at which point the town changed the locks. Once brought back, he quickly jimmied open the rec center door and installed a new lock, smiling the whole time. Organizers came together in secret with not a word said to senior-center board members (or the town council). Tables and chairs were borrowed. One of the town’s finer restaurants (the owner himself a senior) was coaxed into providing finger foods and drinks and two bartenders. A half dozen seniors who were in a band years ago regrouped to provide the music and play songs we actually knew. The annual Christmas dinner turned dance party was a major hit, and just what we needed after this long pandemic lockdown. We ate and we mingled and we drank and we laughed and we danced. And long after what should have been bedtime for most of us, we were still there dancing. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

DID YOU KNOW? While it might be synonymous with Santa Claus and cold weather, the North Pole is actually much warmer than the South Pole. That’s because the North Pole sits at a lower elevation than the South Pole, and it is located in the middle of an ocean. The South Pole, on the other hand, is located on the continent of Antarctica, which is covered in ice. But Santa fans mulling a trip to the North Pole to visit jolly old St. Nick might want to think otherwise, as temperatures at the North Pole are less than welcoming. Summertime temperatures at the North Pole, for example, hover right at the freezing point. In addition, because of the way Earth rotates, the North Pole experiences just one sunrise and one sunset each year. However, because the sun is always above the horizon in the summer and below the horizon in the winter, the North Pole actually experiences 24 hours of sunlight in summer and zero hours of sunlight in the winter. While children in North America know the North Pole as home to Santa Claus, that’s a relatively recent addition to the legend of Santa Claus, a story that some historians suggest traces its origins all the way back to the third century. Historians credit famed 19th century caricaturist and editorial cartoonist Thomas Nast with being the first to link Santa Claus and his workshop to the North Pole. However, many Nordic countries continue to say Santa Claus lives in their territories.

ave you ever felt like no human could understand you? That your years make it difficult to be understood and you need someone or something else to comfort you when you’re down or to share your joy? If so, you’re in luck; a local organization helps with just that. The Pets for the Elderly Foundation (PFE) is an organization that pays the fees for elderly persons, age 60 and older, who decide to adopt an animal companion, especially a dog or a cat. They not only pay the adoption fees, but they also help with the exams if necessary. The organization was developed in 1992 by Avrum Katz when he was in his seventies. “His vision was to provide companionship to senior individuals through pet ownership, while saving the lives of companion animals in shelters.” With this vision, Mr. Katz came to help not only the elderly, but also the animals in shelters that may be in danger due to lack of appropriate homes and space limitations. Avrum understood the positive impact animal companionship has on the elderly as he had experienced it himself with his two pets, Caesar and Sammy. He wanted to share that experience with other men and women his age. That is when the PFE organization was created and is actively operating across the country today. “Research shows the most serious disease for older persons is not cancer or heart disease—it’s loneliness. Pets offer affection, unconditional love, fight loneliness, and can help ease the loss of a loved one. Owning a pet also offers many physical and social benefits for seniors as well.” Not only does this organization run on logic, it also takes into consideration the science behind everything, something that most people trust. The organization’s services offer comfort, affection, and love to seniors through their pets. It is tough being a senior in today’s world where everyone is tangled up in their lives, and if paying for adoption fees can save not one, but two lives, then count the PFE in.

PFE is a non-profit public charity. It runs on donations, working with 57 shelters in 36 states across the country. Clearly, Mr. Katz’ legacy is alive and active. In addition to funding pet adoptions, Pets for the Elderly also helps with financial support for veterinary services, retention assistance, as well as food shortage support for senior adopters. As the PFE continues to raise awareness through their website, they hope to branch out to more states in the future and partner up with as many shelters as possible. The organization has received immense positive feedback from the elderly citizens who have adopted pets through the PFE. Consider the story of this elderly couple from Arizona. “Bill and Betty needed a companion for their special outings, like traveling and long walks. At Yavapai Humane in Prescott, Ariz., they met Fallow, an Australian Shepherd/American Blue Heeler who has an awesome personality, loves to be pet, and is very friendly. Bill and Betty felt an immediate connection. They love traveling in their RV and are very excited to take Fallow along on their adventures.” Many heart-warming stories such as this one highlight the importance of Pets for the Elderly as it supports two very important yet vulnerable populations in our communities. Call: (585) 924-2060 DID YOU KNOW? Brief breaks during the work day can dramatically improve one’s ability to focus on a task. A 2011 study published in the journal Cognition found that brief mental breaks can improve focus on a prolonged task. The study’s authors tested participants’ ability to focus on a repetitive computerized task for 50 minutes under various conditions. The control group performed the task without breaks or diversions. The switch group and non-switch group memorized four digits before performing the task and were directed to respond if they saw one of the digits on the screen while performing the task. The switch group was the only group to be presented with the digits twice during the experiment, and both groups were tested on their memory of the digits at the end of the task. Most participants’ performance declined considerably over the course of the 50-minute task. However, the performance of those in the switch group did not decline at all, as the two brief breaks to respond to the digits allowed them to maintain their focus throughout the experiment. The researchers behind the study concluded that the switch group’s performance was steady because the brain is built to detect and respond to change, and its performance will actually suffer if it must maintain prolonged attention on a single task without taking a break. Professionals with a lot on their plates may see their performance improve by taking frequent mental breaks throughout the workday.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Save the peel on oranges and grapefruits. You can toss them on a fire for a nice smell. * Fold and snip a coffee filter into a paper snowflake. Lay over an iced cookie or cake to sift a sugar design on top. * “When planning to visit my hometown for the holidays, I set aside a few hours to take the kids to the park or a nice playground. I message all my old friends and classmates with kids (Facebook is great for this) a few weeks ahead of time and let them know when I’ll be there. It’s great to catch up while the kids play, and even if no one shows up, we still have a fun break.” -- F.L. in California * “When there are big family jobs to be done (like getting ready for the holidays), we write all the tasks down on slips of paper and put them in a hat. We take turns choosing tasks until all the paper is divvied out. Sometimes we trade, but we all get a fair chore list.” -V.O. in Oregon * Make a holiday cheese ball simply: Combine a package of cream cheese with a cup of finely shredded cheese (your choice) and 1/3 cup sour cream or plain Greek yogurt. Form into a ball, roll in coating of your choice (dried fruit pieces, chopped nuts, spices, etc.) and chill. Wrap in a pretty cellophane bag and bring with pita chips, crackers or pretzels as a hostess gift. * “Wax drippings from candles can be scraped off of most hard surfaces with the side of a credit card.” -- T.E. in Kansas
