BE SMART WHEN SHOPPING ON YOUR SMARTPHONE Holiday shopping is an annual tradition for many people. But while it may be customary to exchange gifts with loved ones during the holiday season, how those gifts are purchased has changed dramatically over the last decade and a half. Thanks to advancements in technology, many holiday shoppers get their shopping done without ever setting foot in malls or shopping centers. And data indicates more and more shoppers are using their smartphones to do their holiday shopping. According to Nielsen Mobile Measurement, the number of mobile shoppers in December 2014 rose to 138.1 million users, an increase of nearly 14 million users from the same period just a year earlier. And mobile shoppers averaged nearly a full hour more shopping on the Web from their mobile phones in 2014 than in 2013. Convenience often drives shoppers’ decisions to use their mobile phones during the holiday season. But it’s important that shoppers not sacrifice security for the sake of convenience.

Susan Ashline Exposes the Criminal Justice System in her True Crime / Memoir, A Jacket off the Gorge BY SUZIE WELLS olice believe a trove of ancient coins is buried in Western NY by criminal mastermind, Jon Fontaine. Susan Ashline of Ontario, NY tells her side of Jon’s true crime story in A Jacket Off the Gorge, and in so telling, shines a light on the systemic failure of today’s criminal justice system.
P
the process that leads to justice involves many links, and if one is broken, the whole chain is no good.” Hence why she shares her story in this book.
Ashline describes Fontaine’s teenage years as filled with a lucrative drug-selling enterprise. Despite tricks up his sleeve, the law caught up with him every time. However, in 2004, to escape a lengthy prison sentence, Ashline says Fontaine bailed out of jail and faked his own death at the Middle Falls in Letchworth State Park, leading park police and New York State police on a four-day search and rescue operation involving a helicopter, sniffer dogs, and a rappel team. When police found Fontaine’s jacket in the gorge, they declared him dead. However, by then, he had run to the Pacific Northwest. Fontaine was eventually captured.
Ashline’s A Jacket Off the Gorge follows the coin caper and shares all the information she learned about the coins along the way. She says that maybe a reader can solve the mystery and find the coins, but if not, Ashline wants to expose the missteps and abuses by people in power, and raise questions about incarceration versus rehabilitation, and the lack of mental health treatment for offenders.
Seven years later, former crime reporter Ashline met and fell in love with Fontaine, not knowing the story of his crime. Ashline says Fontaine was “the very last thing from ‘charming.’” Susan Ashline She says he was soft-spoken, shy, and socially awkward, but also thoughtful and loving, with a hilarious sense of humor. When he told her a watered-down version of his criminal past, it seemed so far-fetched and outrageous Ashline couldn’t reconcile it with the man she knew. She decided he must be a changed man, and the past should stay in the past. Though law enforcement knew Fontaine as a master manipulator, Ashline did not. She says she felt completely safe with him, finding “no intuitive warning signs” at first. When she’d catch him in “minor manipulations” that were so obvious she found them amusing, he’d own up to them, so she just found him naturally human. However, she didn’t realize Fontaine was “manipulating [her] on a sub-level that went undetected.” During their romance, however, police charged Fontaine with stealing a collection of 116,000 ancient gold and silver coins from his stepmother’s Fairport, NY home. These foreign coins had been in her family for years. Fontaine refused to reveal the location of these coins, and the mystery remains unsolved. In 2012, several law enforcement agencies searched discreetly but unsuccessfully for the coins in northern Wayne County. Ashline explains that Fontaine’s method of operation was that if he suspected someone was going to authorities about crimes he may have committed, he went to authorities first, usually with manufactured evidence such as the jacket off the gorge in 2004, and convinced police his accuser was the perpetrator. The tactic had been successful because it took the heat off him. Unfortunately for Ashline, that’s how she found herself in an ambush interrogation and police standoff, where she says she was the only person who didn’t know she was in a standoff. Ashline says Fontaine’s revolving door of arrests ended in 2021, when he made news once again, after a series of horrifying events played out in Ontario County.
Ashline reflects that she “unwittingly fell in love with a narcissist and psychopath. Although my experiences with Jon were out of the norm – book worthy, even – many people find themselves in these relationships. Those are the people I’m hoping to reach; the people who need to know they’re not alone. I wrote about deeply personal and traumatic experiences, but if one person tells me it helped them in some way, then it was all worth it.” For a short time after the ordeal, Ashline felt leery of everyone she met, but she explains that humans are not wired to be so cynical, and it didn’t take her long to realize the mindset was not healthy. She says, “Human beings don’t enter relationships doubting everything a person says and does, and questioning who they are as a person. If someone takes advantage of our trust, that is a flaw in them, not us.” Susan is an Emmynominated journalist whose 2019 debut book, Without a Prayer: The Death of Lucas Leonard and How One Church Became a Cult, launched to national acclaim. In 2024, Jon Fontaine and Susan Ashline she will be featured in a in Windham, NY in 2011 Law and Crime Network documentary about that book. She’s currently working on her next book about a true crime story in the Utica area that made international news.
Ashline says her experience shows a systemic failure at every level of the criminal justice system. “No doubt there are people who work hard and care deeply about their work in the system. But

This weekend will include a time of fellowship, worship, food, activities, and focused time in God’s Word. We will do a deep dive study on The Fear of the LORD! HOW TO PET PROOF YOUR HOME WHEN DECKING THE HALLS Secure the Christmas tree. Much like other residents of the home, pets may be mesmerized by a glowing Christmas tree. Pets may sniff around the tree or investigate it closely, which can increase the chances that it tips over. That poses a significant safety hazard and underscores the importance of using a sturdy stand. Fastening the tree to a wall, much like one might do with a television that isn’t mounted, adds a further layer of protection from tip-overs.

Thanksgiving Dinner Thanks I wish to praise the fantastic job the Dansville Rotary Club did with their Thanksgiving Dinner Program! I was a happy recipient of one of their delicious dinners, and it REALLY was delicious! My dinner arrived nicely HOT and was arranged beautifully. You really made my day! Thank you all, and I hope your Thanksgiving Day was as special as mine! ~ A senior citizen in Dansville Tribute to a Kind Neighbor Today Donna Cochrane from Honeoye came to pick up items for a Sunday school service project a mutual friend is leading, and mentioned that a fall earlier in the day landed the lady at urgent care with broken bones in her hand. Donna had already picked up our friend’s prescriptions and was likely on her way to provide dinner as well. This kindness reminded me of the many times Donna has recognized and quietly provided for people in the community. After a long career in the classroom, she is especially attuned to helping children in need - and I only know of the few I have helped her accomplish. She is a shining example of living the Golden Rule, and I am blessed to call her my friend.
Business Attitudes I tried to purchase a product locally and have it installed. The item was not in stock and it would take a couple weeks to have them order my particular item. I went online and ordered it, and it came in 3 days. Went to have it installed for just an installation fee and got an attitude for not purchasing it from them. Waiting a couple weeks or taking a substitute was not what I wanted. My suggestion is to call them first of your intentions; if you get an attitude, go elsewhere. No one cares about us We senior citizens are lonesome and left alone. Holidays are very depressing. Some of us are handicap in nursing homes. In today’s society, our kids, family, and supposed friends always say, “If you need us, call.” Well, this isn’t the case. Some of us need outside help: leaves to rake, a quick roof job... I could go on and on. All of today’s generations don’t care. The generations have to remember we raised them, put them through college, but they don’t think of all this. Why can’t you help us? Remember, we are still alive. Wake up, children, someday you will regret this and say “I wish Mom and Dad were here.” Too late. People in today’s society need to wake up and help each other like in the olden days. Where did the good old days go besides down the tube? - Sincerely, Senior Citizens

Vegan cuisine that packs a flavorful punch People who do not adhere to vegan diets may assume that such diets are void of taste. But vegan foods can be just as flavorful as more traditional alternatives. Such is the case with the following recipe for “Roasted Baby Parsnips with Sherry-Maple Glaze and Chanterelles” from Tal Ronnen’s “Crossroads: Extraordinary Recipes from the Restaurant That Is Reinventing Vegan Cuisine” (Artisan). When roasted, parsnips produce a sweet flavor, while the chanterelles provide a woodsy taste to prove that vegan foods can indeed be incredibly flavorful.
Roasted Baby Parsnips with Sherry-Maple Glaze and Chanterelles Serves 4 24 baby parsnips, trimmed, or 8 regular parsnips, root ends trimmed and peeled 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 1/4 cup pure maple syrup 2 tablespoons sherry vinegar 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes 2 tablespoons Earth Balance butter stick 1 shallot, minced 2 garlic cloves, minced 1/2 pound chanterelles, wiped clean, quartered if large Finely chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley, for garnish Flaked sea salt To prepare the parsnips, preheat the oven to 400 F. If using larger parsnips, peel and quarter them lengthwise so the pieces will be uniform in size and cook more evenly. Put the parsnips in a large mixing bowl, drizzle with 2 tablespoons of the oil, season with kosher salt and black pepper, and toss to coat evenly. Spread the parsnips out in a single layer on a large baking sheet and roast for about 20 minutes, shaking the pan from time to time, until tender and slightly charred. Set aside. (The roasted parsnips can be prepared a couple hours in advance, covered and held at room temperature. Reheat before serving.) Meanwhile, prepare the glaze. Combine the maple syrup, vinegar and red pepper flakes in a small saucepan and cook over medium-low heat, swirling the pan around occasionally, until the mixture is reduced and syrupy, about 10 minutes. Cover and keep warm. To prepare the mushrooms, put a large sauté pan over medium heat and add the remaining 1 tablespoon oil and the butter substitute. When the butter substitute has melted, add the shallot and sauté until soft but not browned, about 1 minute. Add the garlic, tossing to combine. Add the mushrooms and sauté, stirring frequently, until they lose their moisture, soften and begin to brown, about 5 minutes. Remove from the heat. To serve, crisscross the parsnips on a platter, overlapping them just slightly. Drizzle with the maple glaze and top with the mushrooms. Scatter chopped parsley on top and season with flaked sea salt. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER ● GVPENNYSAVER.COM 1-866-812-8111

MAKE THE HOLIDAY SEASON MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Serve locally sourced foods. Food is often front and center during the holiday season. Whether hosting family and friends at home, dining out or catering an office party, patronize businesses that sell only locally sourced foods. Locally sourced foods are much more eco-friendly than foods that must be shipped from afar before they land on your dinner table, and such foods tend to taste fresh as well. If serving at home, use reusable dishware and cutlery instead of paper plates and plastic utensils.

Here’s a Tip Zip-top bags are essential when our family packs for holiday visiting. We use gallon-size bags for the kids’ outfits -- top, bottoms, underclothes, etc. -- and each bag holds one complete set. There is no suitcase chaos, as the bag comes out, and yesterday’s clothing goes in, ready for laundry day when we get home. Happy traveling. -- JoAnn After Christmas sales are a great time to buy not only gift wrap (look for solid colors that you can use all year long), holiday cards and decoration, but also next season’s winter wear. Things like scarves and gloves can be great bargains. And even coats can go on sale. Take advantage -- especially if you have kids -- and buy up. A great storage container for fancy ornaments is a liquor box, which you can get for free outside of package stores. They have cardboard separators that make it easy to store glass bulbs. -- W.F. in New Mexico (c) 2023 King Features Synd., Inc.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Fatal Episodes of VFib Require an AICD Implant ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m an 88-year-old female who has been diagnosed with ventricular fibrillation (VFib). My cardiac electrophysiologist, who implanted a conventional pacemaker four years ago, has noticed several episodes of VFib (up to 30 seconds, read via a bedside monitor). They recommend replacing the current pacemaker with a combo pacemaker and defibrillator. I wonder about the history/success of this device. -- C.R. ANSWER: Most people have heard about atrial fibrillation (AFib), which is a common, chaotic electrical condition of the top chambers of the heart. Without regular electrical input from the atria to the ventricles, the ventricles beat irregularly, but blood flow from the heart still remains adequate. By contrast, VFib is a chaotic movement of the lower chambers, and the heart does not pump blood during VFib. Within a short time, 10 to 30 seconds at most, the brain will not have enough oxygen to keep you conscious. Unless VFib is rapidly treated or stops by itself (which is rare, but happened to you), VFib is fatal. A survivor of VFib definitely benefits from an automatic implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (AICD). Nowadays, they also have the ability to act as a pacemaker; they recognize and immediately provide a shock during episodes of VFib. AICDs first became available when I was in medical school during the 1980s, but current models are a huge improvement since they are smaller and last longer. The evidence is strong that people at a high risk for a “malignant” arrythmia like VFib live longer with an AICD than those who are only treated with anti-arrhythmic drugs. The rate of sudden cardiac death is reduced by about 50%. You are very lucky and should get this recommended device as soon as possible. They are common and effective.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Dec. 14, 1909, workers place the last of the 3.2 million 10-pound bricks that pave the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Since then, most of that brick has been buried under asphalt, but 1 yard remains exposed at the start-finish line. Kissing those bricks after a successful race remains a tradition among Indy drivers.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Should an owner punish puppy after accident? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I bought a puppy a few weeks ago who was between 2 to 3 months old. Star is wonderful, and housetraining has been OK. But yesterday, he pooed in the hallway while we were out. My boyfriend says I need to push his nose into the mess and punish him. I don’t think that’s the right way to train a puppy. What do you think? -- Daria in St. Louis, Missouri DEAR DARIA: Your instinct is spot on, and you should trust it more. That’s the wrong way to train a puppy. It’s aggressive, negative and doesn’t teach the puppy anything -- except to be afraid. Young puppies are learning machines, picking up habits quickly -- both good and bad. They need to be constantly supervised to keep them safe and to correct them (not punish them) on the spot so they learn what they can and can’t do in the household. When they’re not supervised, I recommend placing them in a properly sized kennel crate. Think of it as a den for your puppy, a safe spot. Again, not a place to punish him. Furthermore, puppies need to pee and poo more frequently than adult dogs -- about four times daily at Star’s age, but sometimes more. It’s up to you to make sure their elimination schedule is adequate and that you are there to supervise them. Star couldn’t wait for you to get home, so he went in the hallway. That’s on you, not on Star. Clean up the mess (spray with an odor eliminator) and continue your training schedu
