Hi! My name is Levi. I am a very good pup, yes! I like to spend time with mama and papa, but also my kitty brother. My favorite things to do are, um, to sit, to play, to eat kibble, go on walkies, and poo on the lawn and make mama and papa pick it up. I love them so very much. The end.

Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340, Avon, NY 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.

VALENTINES TRADITIONS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

In South Korea, men get to enjoy the spotlight on Valentine’s Day, as women bestow gifts of chocolate on them. In return, a month later men reciprocate with gifts for women on White Day. South Koreans take Valentine’s Day a step further on Black Day, which falls on April 14. This is an opportunity for all single people who may not have received Valentine’s Day gifts to gather at restaurants and eat a dish called “black noodles” as they celebrate their singleton status.

DID YOU KNOW?

Valentine’s Day symbols like heart-shaped boxes of chocolate, Cupid shooting his arrow and bouquets of roses are ubiquitous come February. Each of those symbolizes is meant to signify the love individuals have for their significant others, but perhaps no Valentine’s Day image is more symbolic of love than doves. According to LiveScience.com, doves have been a symbol of love since the Middle Ages, when many people believed birds chose their mates on Valentine’s Day. But the history of doves and their affiliation with love dates back even further and can be traced to the days of Greek mythology. Aphrodite is the goddess of love in Greek mythology, and she is often depicted as being surrounded by doves. Doves’ own traits also have helped them become symbols of love, as LiveScience.com notes that male doves help their female partners incubate and tend to their young, bolstering their image as caring, loving birds.

ANSWERS TO COMMON PET FOSTERING QUESTIONS

What are some benefits to fostering for the people involved? While there are many benefits to the pet, including a less stressful, quiet environment, people get something out of fostering, too. Foster families can provide love and affection to an animal that needs it. It can be rewarding to do something selfless, and teaches compassion to everyone in the household. Since having a pet is a large responsibility, pet fostering also serves as an introductory lesson for anyone considering becoming a permanent pet parent. When fostering a pet, everyone in the household gets to see the day-to-day tasks that pet ownership requires.

Pet Pride Cat Sanctuary & Adoption Center Expansion Complete

The Empire State showed it cares for animal shelters. Last November, Governor Hochul included the Companion Animal Capitol Fund in her proposed executive scal budget for 2023. is unprecedented move showed Hochul and the state recognize the capacity strain pet shelters have endured in recent years, and they commit to providing safe housing for abandoned dogs and cats awaiting adoption.

One local shelter, Pet Pride of New York, a no-kill cat sanctuary on Route 251 in Victor, received $200,000 from the Fund to renovate and expand. Pet Pride is the only shelter in our region to receive this generous endowment. is money, with other local philanthropic donations, enables Pet Pride to compassionately care for the vulnerable feline populations in its newly renovated $1.2 million addition that opened to the public on January 21, 2023.

Vice President Marlies Sullivan, says, “We’re a little di erent than most shelters because we have an open enrichment environment. Our cats come out during the day. We have a full surgical and veterinary suite… We have windows everywhere. ese cats can actually go outside and get fresh air and hang out on perches. We purchased some more for our new building. We have six catios now.”

Upon entering the facility, you might be welcomed by Herby, a friendly, black and white, u y tuxedo cat. A er leaving the entrance area, you take Tabby Lane, decorated with pictures of Pet Pride alum. From there, you can enter Kitten Kingdom or peruse the community rooms.

Each room is beautifully lit and spacious. Any cat lover would love to explore Calico Cottage, Catnip Cavanagh, Meow Manner, and Kitten Kingdom. While Kitten Kingdom provides adoptable cats with an enclosed space, other rooms allow cats to roam freely around the building as they interact with visitors and employees. In some rooms, cats can even safely “bird watch” on televisions, entertaining them while harming no birds.

“We are excited about the Healing Paws medical center. We have some vets that are excited about helping us. Vets sign on to do a shi ; it could be once a month. ere’s a lot of veterinarians that like to give back. Giving back to homeless animals is something they’re passionate about.”

Pet Pride of NY also relies heavily upon a network of kind and caring foster families to meet their needs. Sullivan says, “Overcrowding is a huge problem. We have this expansion, but we will still have a long waiting line. ere are a lot of homeless cats and kittens out there, and it doesn’t seem to be getting better. We now spay and neuter early. ere’s still a lot of homeless ones out there. When you start to do the math, it’s very daunting.”

e motto of Pet Pride is “Every cat deserves a home,” and thanks to the Companion Animal Capitol Fund and local community donations, they are closer to making that dream a reality. With continued support, they can remove more homeless, abused, and neglected felines from the streets and place them in suitable, loving, forever homes.

ere are many ways to support this animal shelter. Pet Pride is always seeking volunteers and donations, whether it be visitors helping socialize the cats to ensure they are adoptable, veterinarians and vet techs helping spay/neuter the cats, and families fostering pregnant momma cats and kittens under eight weeks. Pet Pride also o ers enclosure naming rights to memorialize loved ones.

For more information on Pet Pride and its services, visit petprideny.org or stop by Pet Pride at 7731 Victor Mendon Rd, Victor, NY 14564.

Pet Pride assesses each animal’s temperament and viability for adoption and chooses a space that ts the needs of that cat. Each cat appears lovingly cared for and content. Meticulous thought and detail make this expansion like no other, ensuring felines are as comfortable as possible.

Community support is vital when it comes to caring for shelter animals, and the work is never done. According to Sullivan,

MUSIC CAN IMPACT EMOTIONS

Music is an integral part of the human experience. Songs have been sung for centuries, and music plays an integral role in many cultural ceremonies, rites of passage and other traditions. Love songs may be enjoyed on Valentine’s Day and stir up strong romantic feelings that enhance the theme of the day. But why is music so impactful?

Researchers have had an interest in music and its impact on human emotion and perceptions for many years. Music of all genres and styles can be therapeutic and boost mood while bringing listeners pleasure and comfort. Sad music may intensify grief. Music can evoke strong feelings andmayinfluencehowindividuals perceive other people and things. According to a recent study by researchers Nidhya Logeswaran and Joydeep Bhattacharya from the University of London, music affects how people see visual images. In an experiment, 30 subjects were presented with a series of happy or sad musical excerpts. After listening to the songs, the subjects were shown a photographofaface.Somepeople were shown a happy face - the person was smiling - while others were exposed to a face with sad or neutral facial expressions. The participants were then asked to rate the emotional content of the face. Researchers found that happy music made happy faces seem that much more pleasant, while sad music exaggerated frowns.Similareffectswerefound with neutral faces.

These findings illustrate how music can help improve physical and mental health when used in concert with other strategies. The American Music Therapy Association reports that music therapy programs can be used to manage stress, enhance memory and alleviate pain.

The right music can serve as a catalyst for romance. Men and women can increase feelings of affection in their romantic partners by playing love songs in the background while offering gifts and tokens of their love. If a proposal is planned for February, one can set the mood with a favorite song that exemplifies the special relationship shared with a significant other. Those who may not be able to express their feelings verbally may find that music helps to convey those feelings.

Music certainly can impact emotions, though the reasons why are not entirely known. However, people can use music to their advantage, particularly on Valentine’s Day.

PAW’S CORNER

Crying in the Car Is Never a Good ing

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My Border Collie, Sugar, gets very anxious during car rides. She is not one of those dogs who likes to stick their head out of the window! Instead, she whimpers, cries, drools and paces around on the back seat. I’m very worried that she’ll try to jump into my lap. How can I stop her crying? -- Wendy G., Atlanta

DEAR WENDY: Poor Sugar! Anxiety in pets is o en tied to a distressing experience in their past. And her uncontrolled movement around the car is a safety issue.

Talk to Sugar’s veterinarian about her behavior. ey can provide advice and help determine if and when anti-anxiety medication should be given.

Adding a pet restraint system (like a doggie seat or seat belt) or kennel cage will keep Sugar from sliding around in the car and may help her feel more secure.

Next, help reduce Sugar’s anxiety by helping her associate car rides with good things. is will take a little extra time and e ort each day, but it’s worth it.

-- With the car parked in the driveway, sit in the back seat with Sugar (in her seat or cage) for about ve minutes. Give her a small treat and lots of praise when she does. Do this daily, without driving anywhere.

-- When Sugar regularly stays calm, shi to the driver’s seat a er sitting with her in the back seat.

-- Step up to the next level: Turn on the car, giving Sugar a treat when you do so. Put soothing music on the radio.

A trainer can be a good investment, as well. ey’ll work with Sugar (and o en the vet) to make her car rides bearable, and maybe even enjoyable.

How does your pet stand car rides? Tell us about it at ask@pawscorner. com.

Ways to Train Your Brain

ere are several “brain support” online programs out there, but many cost more than we’d like to pay.

Lumosity (lumosity.com) comes in seven languages and has games that promote memory, attention, exibility, problem-solving and more. A er you sign up, you’ll get three free games per day, and the Brain Performance Index monitors your progress. ere is a subscription plan, of course, if you want access to more areas of the site, and you can pay by the month or the year. Test the free version rst to see if you like it.

BrainHQ (brainhq.com) is another cognitive training program that you can access online. eir exercises explore brain speed, memory, attention and more. And you can design your own program. eir goals are to help you think faster, focus better and remember more. You can try it out by subscribing to their email newsletters, which have free daily exercises to sample.

As for me, I’ve found books that don’t cost much and are good at putting my brain through its paces on a daily basis. e New York Times series of puzzle books begins with the Monday editions, which are the easiest of the week. ( e crossword puzzles get increasingly di cult as the week progresses.) I found the whole series of spiral-bound puzzle books (50 to a book) on Amazon.

en there are the online jigsaw puzzles at eJigsawPuzzles.com. e puzzles (a new one every day) can be set in any number of ways, including the number of pieces in a puzzle. I’ve found that the 100-pieces level is plenty challenging when viewed on a computer monitor.

And then there is online chess, for those of us who used to play back in the day but would be embarrassed to lose to a small child now without serious brushing up of our skills. Try this for free at www.chess.com and play against their computer.

RAVES

A Great Teacher

Kudos and thanks to Sara at the Livonia Public Library for using her computer skills to help patrons do what they need to do on the computer. A lot of people come in to the library needing to do this or that but don’t have the ability to do so. Sara is always willing to help and if she is unsure about how to do something, she will play around until she gets a resolution. In this day and age, a lot can be done on the computer but folks don’t always know how to do it and it is hard for some of us to learn it. Having Sara to instruct and guide us is invaluable. We deeply appreciate the time she takes to help.

We have your plate number and pictures of your car, along with videos of this happening. This has been happening for a very, very long time. You will be reported. Reading that sanctimonious crud last week reminded me of certain politicians who want to dictate every last freedom we’ve got left. Eat what you want! It’s no one else’s business. DEAR DR. ROACH: I am 78; I had a hysterectomy in 1976 due to excessive vaginal bleeding, but I still have my ovaries. I have had hot flashes since undergoing menopause -- they usually last three to five minutes, and I have them about every two hours around the clock (which obviously interferes with my sleep).

Over the last 28 years, I have tried Premarin (which gave me bad headaches), gabapentin, venlafaxine, Bellergal, melatonin, black cohosh, clonidine, DHEA, Pro-Gest cream (chamomile, hops and valerian root), progesterone and estrogen (together), avoiding caffeine, and eliminating dairy products. None of these have helped. I would appreciate it if you could offer any suggestions.

ANSWER: I’m sorry to hear of your difficulties. You have certainly tried about all the available therapies. There are two additional ones you might want to consider: Megesterol is a hormonal therapy that is helpful for some women, but the fact that you haven’t responded to estrogens and progestins is not promising. The other is called a stellate ganglion block. You can ask your physician about it. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: After a patient has had megadoses of IV and oral antibiotics, is there anything they should do to restore the balance in their body, such as eating probiotics or yogurt? Or is that all nonsense? -- N.W.

ANSWER: The idea makes perfect sense: Antibiotics not only kill the bad bacteria that is infecting us, they also kill many of the healthy bacteria that help us with digestion and other functions. (The whole suite of healthy bacteria living in our gut is termed the “microbiome.”) Why not help the gut return to normal by giving it some healthy bacteria, such as those found in yogurt with live cultures, or specific probiotics, which are just the healthy bacteria?

The answer is that it has been very hard to prove that there is any benefit in doing so. In people with no symptoms after finishing an antibiotic course, there probably aren’t any benefits.

At least one study showed what researchers called a “very severe disturbance” in the person’s microbiome and actually slowed the return to a person’s normal microbiome, which they had prior to antibiotics. Worse still, very rarely, infections have been transmitted through probiotics. Symptoms after antibiotic therapy, especially diarrhea and fever, could indicate a very severe infection called Clostridioides difficile (“C. diff”), which does not respond to probiotics and usually needs powerful antibiotics to treat. Probiotics have not been found to prevent C. diff.

WHY IS VALENTINE’S DAY CELEBRATED ON FEBRUARY 14TH?

Sweethearts who want to keep their relationships running strong know that Valentine’s Day is celebrated each year on February 14. But even the most ardent Valentine’s Day enthusiast might not know just why this day designed for lovers to express their affections for one another is celebrated in mid-February. According to the Library of Congress, it’s hard to pinpoint exactly why Valentine’s Day is celebrated on February 14, though the date might have ties to the ancient Roman celebration of Lupercalia. Lupercalia was a spring festival celebrated each year on February 15. The holiday was moved to February 14 after the spread of Christianity. The Christian faith had several early martyrs named Valentine, and eachofthemwerecelebratedwith a saint day on February 14. But the unique history of Valentine’s Day and its association with February14aswellasitsromantic sentiments does not end there. The Library of Congress also notes that, in the Middle Ages, people believed birds selected their mates on February 14. As a result, it was not uncommon for lovers to recite prose to one anotheronthisdate.

NOW HERE’S A TIP

* To store asparagus, trim the ends and wrap them in a few paper towels that you have dampened. Keep it in the fridge for two days max. This will keep it very fresh and tasty.

* “To stretch your food dollar -- especially now that the weather is colder, and soups and stews are daily fare -- substitute peas, beans and lentils for meats whenever possible. Not only will this semivegetarian diet keep your food dollars down, it will make you healthier and it’s a more ecofriendly diet.” -- K.F. in Connecticut

* If you add dried fruit or raisins to your batter for cakes or muffins, roll them or shake them in flour first. This will prevent them from sinking down to the bottom of the pan.

* Bathroom fan reminder: When you leave your bathroom fan running excessively, you are pumping heat out of your house. Set a timer for 10 minutes maximum, and then turn it off.

* “Old pantyhose can be washed and cut up to use as stuffing for a toy. The same is true for other light materials. This can be a good way to get one more use out of something rather than putting it in the trash bin.” -- P.L. in Pennsylvania

* If your bathtub has a grainy or rough texture, try soaking the bath in vinegar, either by adding a large bottle to some water and plugging it up, or by laying down a towel and soaking it in vinegar. Scrub and remove.
