~ All Your Excavation Needs ~
We Are Once Again OPEN! By Sam Mazzotta
Training Your Dog for Hiking Season DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My 1-year-old puppy, Corky, is an energetic mutt who loves to be outside. I started hiking last year, before I adopted Corky, and I plan to do lots more hiking trips when the weather gets warmer. I want to bring Corky along, but I’ve read mixed advice about dogs on trails and at campsites. What’s your take? -- Ellen in Boulder, Colorado DEAR ELLEN: You can definitely take Corky along! Preparation is key: You must prepare Corky for the hike, and you need to research the trails before departing to find out important information, including: -- Are dogs allowed on the trail? -- What are other rules about pets on the trail? -- How long is the hike you’re planning? -- How far can Corky reasonably walk? -- Is water available along the trail, or will you need to carry extra for your dog? -- How good is Corky’s behavior training -- will he come to you as soon as you call? When I’m on a hike, I follow Leave No Trace rules -- which also apply to dogs, so be prepared to carry out his poop -- and another set of rules I call “Annoy No Other Hikers.” Included in this personal set of rules are a few dog-specific ones: -- Keep my dog on a leash during the hike, especially on popular trails. -- Clean up after my dog. -- Make sure to carry adequate water, food, first aid and safety gear (such as booties and vest). -- Keep my dog under control when greeting oncoming hikers. Not everyone is thrilled by dogs, and a jumping, out-of-control dog does the community no favors. Find more training and hiking tips at the American Hiking Society (americanhiking.org/resources/ hiking-with-dogs/). Pick up dog gear advice at Reckless Roaming (recklessroaming.com/how-tohike-with-your-dog/). And Chewy has some good all-around tips as well. See you on the trail! Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com.

DID YOU KNOW? Choking is a leading cause of unintentional death in infants. Young children not can choke on food as well as objects they put in their mouths while exploring the world around them. Parents of young children and hosts who intend to invite youngsters into their homes can learn how to respond when kids appear to be choking. The Mayo Clinic recommends the following approach when tending to children under the age of 1, which differs from the steps necessary to address choking instances in older children and adults.
COUNTDOWN TO VALENTINE’S DAY February 11: Promise Day Promise Day provides an opportunity to make promises to each other that are specific to couples’ relationships. These can include being more patient, traveling more or spending more time together.
· Assume a seated position and hold the infant facedown on your forearm, which is resting on your thigh. Support the infant’s head and neck with your hand, and place the head lower than the trunk.

· Thump the infant gently but firmly five times on the middle of the back using the heel of your hand. The combination of gravity and the back blows should release the blocking object. Keep your fingers pointed up to avoid hitting the infant in the back of the head. · Turn the infant face up on your forearm, resting on your thigh with the head lower than the trunk if the infant still isn’t breathing. Using two fingers placed at the center of the infant’s breastbone, give five quick chest compressions. Press down about 11/2 inches, and let the chest rise again in between each compression. · Repeat the back blows and chest thrusts if breathing doesn’t resume. Call for emergency medical help. · Begin infant CPR if one of these techniques opens the airway but the infant doesn’t resume breathing.

HOMETOWN PHOTOS Dysfunctional Health A local healthcare entity has a phone system that is totally dysfunctional. If you want to reach them, you must do it through their call center. One time, I spent 2 hours trying to speak with a person. Most recently, I spent 4 hours, in various pieces, trying to reach someone. It seems that, if you do not have a computer, the only way to communicate with them is to go to the facility. Apparently, they disconnected the individual phones so as not to pay to have someone answer them.
S E V RA Service matters! I would love to give a huge shout out to the wonderful people who work at the Valero Gas Station on Route 39 (Wadsworth Ave) in Avon. Being one of the few full service stations around, they get many customers, myself included, who stop to avail themselves of their wonderful service, either due to weather or for convenience. Even during these bitterly cold days they still manage to greet you with an upbeat attitude and a smile. I, for one, find it refreshing and will continue to frequent their business for some time to come. Toys for Tots The Memorial Day Detachment #468 Marine Corps League would like to thank everyone who participated in our 2021 Toys For Tots campaign in Ontario and Livingston counties. Due to your help and generosity, we were able to distribute over 6,000 toys and help around 2,000 children have a Merry Christmas. A lot of these children would not have otherwise been able to celebrate the holiday with a new toy without your help. All of the toys collected in each county are distributed in that county along with donations from our great corporate sponsors. Thank you and we look forward to our 2022 campaign.
Living in a Winter Wonderland What a great time for us to get outdoors, be it for a day trip or a weekend away from home. Out of shape? No problem! Walk along a groomed trail, dirt road, or just hop off the roadside, turn the car off, and listen. Too many times, people that have lived in Upstate NY for years are complaining about cold and snow. By April, I become one, but far more often, complaints are as vast as the blinding tundra. Enjoy the snow, put up with the cold, and if you find yourself saying, “Snow, go away” in January, maybe it is time to pack up and move.
Bus red lights Please stop running my bus' red lights. When a bus stops and the red lights are on, that means you need to stop! Not to keep driving through and give me a wave. In the last few weeks, I have had many people running the red on my bus. We are trying to get kids safely to and from school. Please stop a distance from the bus so we know you are stopping and watching for our kids! Let's all be safe out on the road. Slow down please! To the residents of [local road]: I live here. The road is eight miles long, double yellow, and 35 MPH the entire length because of all its curves and turns. You could probably stretch 35 MPH to 41 or 42, but not 50 or 55. I am tired of taking my life in my hands just getting my mail. Also, I do not like the dirty looks I get for slowing you down while crossing the road. I am 71, and I would like to see 72. Seriously! I didn't get a chance to vote in that GVPS poll asking about the environment. I am not concerned at all about the environment. Why should I be concerned about something that cannot be controlled? So, that would be 42%, plus 1. Have a nice day. Animal Advocates Thank you to all who watch out for and help helpless animals. You do not have to donate to an organization who pays their CEO $750,000 a year. You can make a huge difference in an animals well-being by donating to your local animal shelter or volunteering. You can also buy cat and dog food and deliver it to families in need or the woman down your street or in the next neighborhood who feeds and gives shelter to stray cats. Three friends and I have been doing this for a couple years now. We have yet to have anyone refuse food for the animals. You won't have to look too far to find animals in need. As for reporting suspected abuse or neglect, yes, call 911. They will direct you to your local animal control/animal abuse contact numbers, and your issue will be checked out. See something; say something. You are their voice.

One doesn’t have to be a famous movie producer or sports star to donate assets to charity in wills. Individuals sometimes make the choice to leave a portion of their estate to a favorite charity to create a legacy that helps the unfortunate. Such a decision may surprise family members, so it may be wise to discuss plans when drafting wills and ensuring that the correct method of bequeathing estates to charities is followed. When a will is written, it is typically in a person’s best interest to consult with an estate-planning attorney prior to making any decisions. When working in conjunction with a financial planner, an attorney can help you grow your estate and ensure your assets will be distributed according to your wishes.
GREEN WAYS TO CLEAN UP SNOW Although residents of chilly climates come to expect the flakes and gathering snow mounds, some people never quite get used to the cleanup involved in keeping neighborhoods safe and accessible. In M arch 2014, North America w as covered by the third-highest amount of snow that late in the season since record keeping began in 1966, according to NOAA’s U.S. National Ice Center. Snow can begin in September and October in some northern areas and stretch on until early spring. It pays to learn the best w ays to deal w ith snow and to incorporate some environmentally friendly strategies as w ell. The most eco-friendly w ay to remove snow is to w ait until the spring thaw w hen it’ll melt. Unfortunately that is not practical for most people. Therefore homeow ners and business ow ners need to look to other methods to clear drivew ays, parking lots and sidew alks of the w hite stuff.

He was a Lifetime Member (1968-2022) of the Joseph Gallipeau American Legion Post 294 in East Avon, NY. Guy helped with the Construction Committee for the new Avon Veterans Hall in East Avon, which was built in 2002-2003. He was also involved in the Avon Civil War Monument Restoration Project in 2005. Guy was also a Lifetime Member (50 years) of the Avon Fire Department and was named the Avon Citizen of the Year in 2014. Over the years Guy was involved in general contracting in the Avon community, volunteering with the Genesee Valley Pony Club, bowling on the Cricket Stables Bowling Team, and participating with the East Avon Pony Trotting Association. He also owned and operated the Country Store at 320 West Main Street in Avon in the early 1970’s with his uncles, Anthony and Sam Zito. He was a member and volunteer for the St. Agnes Church Cemetery and served on the board of directors. Guy had a strong work ethic and great skills to build and repair anything from homes to furniture. He enjoyed refinishing wood furniture pieces and working with stained glass. He loved his family, friends, and community.
Her interests included gardening, reading, and tending to her home. She relished in spending time with her family, friends, and probably most importantly, her dogs. Sheila was a devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother, aunt and friend. She sacrificed any professional career to raise and care for her 3 children. Aside from her children, she spent her remaining years of life in the company of her partner, Maurice Gladding. She was immensely proud of her family, leaving behind nothing but beautiful memories. She will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts. Calling hours will be held on Saturday, February 12th from 12pm-2pm at Baird Funeral Home in Naples, NY. In lieu of sending flowers, those wishing to honor Sheila may consider contributing to Happy Tails Animal Shelter (https:// ontariocountyhumanesociety.org) as animals were so near and dear to her heart.
Estate planning is an important part of managing one’s finances. A qualified attorney who specializes in estate planning can help people write their wills and, if necessary, establish trusts that can help surviving loved ones in the wake of their death.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Beware of the Cold Administrators of the local senior center called it a tailgate party and envisioned many dozens of elderly gathered in the parking lot outside the center, drinking coffee and snacking on doughnuts from the bakery. They’d sent out notices and emails a week in advance. No one showed up. Not a single senior was to be seen, while center management stood on the steps wringing their hands and wondering why. The problem, we all know, is that the oldest of the senior center management team is less than half our average age, with their assistants barely out of college. Degrees galore, of course, in gerontology this and geriatric that, but framed documents hanging on the wall don’t indicate a personal knowledge of what all seniors know for fact: We get cold! Not only do we get cold, but we have to be careful. Our circulation isn’t what it used to be. We lose body heat faster and sometimes don’t even know it’s happening. When our core temperature drops too low, it can damage our liver, kidney and heart. Hypothermia is a real risk and can be deadly. It bears repeating that we need to beware of the cold. Here’s what you can do to stay on top of your own body temperature: • Don’t skimp on the heat at home. Keep the thermostat at 68-70 F and wear a sweater inside. (If you visit an elderly person in the winter, go to the thermostat and see what the setting is.) If you must save money on heating, close off rooms you’re not using. • Ask someone to install clear plastic film insulation on your windows. You’ll be surprised how much it cuts down on icy drafts. • Keep a blanket or quilt on the sofa or recliner, and cover up when you sit down. • If you have to go out, wear layers and a good hat, gloves and scarf. Don’t let body heat escape out of your neckline. And if your senior center hosts an outdoor parking-lot gathering, check the weather report. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Inside View: Discover a Local Nuclear Power Plant Refueling Outage BY DP DUNN
T
he R.E. Ginna Nuclear Power Plant, located in Ontario, NY, recently shut down for a few short weeks for a refueling outage. A refueling outage is essentially time to ‘fi ll up the tank.” The nuclear reactor is opened up – literally, the top, or reactor head is removed. Engineers and operations specialists remove the weakest, or “spent” fuel, move the fuel bundles around, and add new, fresh fuel. The refueling outage is planned in advance, parts and materials ordered, and the work is carefully documented, and the records are maintained for the life of the plant. In a pressurized water reactor, like Ginna, the primary coolant is pumped under high pressure to the reactor core where it is heated by the energy released by the fission of atoms. The heated, high pressure water then flows to a steam generator, where it transfers its thermal energy to lower pressure water of a secondary system where steam is generated. The steam then drives turbines, which spin an electric generator. See https://www. nrc.gov/read i ng-r m / basic-ref/ students/animated-pwr.html for an illustration of the process.
industry prides itself on its strong safety record, which is well documented by the Bureau of Labor Statistics on their site https://www.bls.gov/ [see industry code 221113 ]. The nuclear industry, along with the military, transportation, and medical industries have carefully studied the root causes of human error. The nuclear industry in particular, has established a culture that drives human error rates to near zero. Inspections are performed and independently verified, as are mathematical calculations. Plant manipulations are practiced in great detail and performed under the careful watch of others who are well-trained in the evolution or task. No one acts alone.
R.E. Ginna Nuclear Power Plant - Ontario, NY
But that’s not all that happens. In parallel with refueling, the nuclear reactor, its components, the steam generators and major safety systems and their associated components are thoroughly inspected. Instrumentation, valves and circuit breakers which control the safety systems are calibrated, and retested. Items like electronic circuits are replaced, not because they have malfunctions, but because of their time inservice.
The men and women who operate and maintain nuclear plants are highly trained professionals. Many have an engineering or technical background and training. Many nuclear workers are veterans who served in the U.S. Navy, where they were trained to operate naval reactors onboard nuclear submarines and aircraft carriers. You would be hard-pressed to find a more dedicated and skilled workforce in any industry. The refueling outage is an exciting time, like rebuilding a finely tuned race car. Take it apart, inspect every part, recondition it, put it all back together, and watch it run perfectly for another race. This large and complex machine, operated and maintained by dedicated professionals, will keep running safely for another stretch, providing safe, efficient carbon-free energy for nearly 500,000 of our region’s homes, medical facilities, and businesses. [The author retired from the nuclear industry, having worked over 40 refueling outages at Ginna and other nuclear plants. He recently returned to support the refueling outage, see old friends, and remember exactly why he had retired.]
The refueling outage draws hundreds of skilled craftsmen and women from around the country Turbine Deck to perform maintenance. Highly trained electricians, motor and pump mechanics, valve mechanics and instrumentation and controls specialists converge on the plant to perform specialized maintenance. During this refueling outage, workers conducted more than 3,000 routine Enjoy this article? Check out this week’s other great stories online at inspections and preventive maintenance activities. RECOGNIZE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HOUSEHOLD CHEMICALS Air fresheners: These seemingly innocuous products may be doing more harm than good. Information published in a 2015 issue of The Journal of Toxicological Sciences linked air fresheners to volatile organic compounds, or VOCs. They also may contain ultra-fine particles of formaldehyde and phenol. In addition, National Geographic’s The Green Guide states that many air fresheners contain nerve-deadening chemicals that coat nasal passages and temporarily block one’s sense of smell. Many widely available air fresheners use phthalates, which are linked to hormonal and reproductive issues, birth defects and developmental disorders. In lieu of chemical air fresheners, spray diluted essential oils around the house.
a brittle Type 1 diabetic for 50 years. I have no history of heart disease. My doctor of 40 years recently retired and had me control my hemoglobin A1C to a range of 5.96.2. My new doctor, who is in her mid-30s, wants me to elevate my hemoglobin A1C to 8.0. Is this the new way of controlling blood sugar? I am confused! Can you please explain the difference in opinion? -- E.S. ANSWER: “Brittle” diabetes is when it is hard to control too-high and too-low blood sugars. The A1C is a blood test that looks at average blood sugar over the past few months. A normal A1C is between 4% and 5.6%. People with normal A1C levels are at very low risk of complications from diabetes, especially of the kidneys (leading to dialysis), eyes (which ultimately leads to blindness) and nerves (diabetic neuropathy is painful and predisposes to injury). On the other hand, low A1C levels put people at higher risk for low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), which can be very dangerous. People with Type 2 diabetes and blockages in blood vessels (or at very high risk) were shown to have higher risk of heart attack. For this reason, recent guidelines for older adults with Type 2 diabetes have had more relaxed goals, in the range of 7 to 8, although these do need to be individualized. For Type 1 diabetes, most guidelines still recommend an A1C goal of less than 7%. However, for a person with Type 1 diabetes who also has other medical problems that are likely to impact mortality, and for those at high risk for severe hypoglycemia, a more relaxed goal is not unreasonable. Hypoglycemia is too-low blood sugar, with risk of confusion. This is a big problem in people with brittle diabetes. A lower A1C is associated with a lower risk of damage to small blood vessels, which is what is responsible for nerve damage, eye disease and most diabetic kidney disease. If you have been able to keep your A1C in the range of 5.9 to 6.2, which is not an easy feat, and have not had any serious episodes of low blood sugar recently, I would wonder why your new doctor feels your blood sugar needs to be substantially higher than it is. Finding the right balance between good control and freedom from hypoglycemia isn’t always easy, but these are the risks and benefits your doctors have been considering. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. (c) 2022 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER
