Usage frequency: When considering an RV, think about how often it will be used and where it will be stored when not in use. Garage storage may be challenging on a larger rig, and some housing communities frown upon parking RVs in driveways. This may affect the size you choose as well as the features you need, according to KOA, the RV camp site leader.

AVOID ACHES AND PAINS WHEN GARDENING People who have not spent much time in a garden may not consider this rewarding hobby much of a threat to their health. But as veteran gardeners can attest, gardening can contribute to nagging aches and pains that can force even the most ardent green-thumbers indoors. Gardening is a physical activity that, despite its peaceful nature, can be demanding on the body.

Cleaning a greenhouse in advance of spring can help gardeners evict any overwintering pests that can threaten plant life once spring gardening season arrives. A thorough cleaning, which should include cleaning the inside of greenhouse glass and washing flower pots and plant trays, also can prevent plant diseases from surviving into spring.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: The local shelter in our college town does not allow college students to adopt pets. However, my roommate managed to get around the rule by using her boyfriend’s address, and she brought a kitten into our dorm. I told her to take it back, as pets are not allowed in the dorm (except for service animals). She ignored me. Two weeks later, she dropped out of school and moved in with her boyfriend, leaving behind most of her stuff -- and the kitten! If I tell our R.A. I could get in trouble. What can I do? I don’t want anyone to know what college I’m at, so sign me -- Beth in Boston DEAR BETH: Honesty is the best policy here, and the welfare of the kitten is at stake. Contact the shelter right away. Explain what happened with your roommate, that you’re caring for the kitten as she’s abandoned it, but that you aren’t allowed to keep it. Next, tell your R.A. what happened. Call your parents, too, so they’re aware of the problem and will support you if there’s an issue with the school. Your roommate used either her name or her boyfriend’s name and his address. The shelter will have this on file, so they can verify that you’re not the one who’s responsible for the kitten. They’ll give you instructions on how to bring the kitten back and surrender it to them. If there’s a surrender fee, they should bill the boyfriend and your ex-roommate. Likewise, any penalties assessed by the college should fall on your ex-roommate.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles

Living on Social Security

We’ve now experienced our 2022 Social Security benefit amount for a couple of months, the 5.9% increase. How are you doing? The problem is that the COLA (Cost of Living Adjustment) is calculated from July to September the year before. Yes, prices were inching up then, but by December, we were seeing the writing on the wall when the annual Consumer Price Index was already up 7%. Add to that the hefty Medicare Part B increase to cover the cost of Aduhelm, the Alzheimer’s drug most of us will never take. Even though the price was forced down (from $56,000 per patient per year to $28,200 per year), our increased Medicare cost per month won’t come down. Seniors, especially those who only have Social Security for income, are struggling, and not only at the grocery store. Heating costs, gas for our vehicles, furniture, clothing ... they’ve all gone up. The dilemma, some say, is that the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (which establishes the Cost of Living Adjustment) doesn’t take into consideration our spending patterns. We don’t have the same needs as wage earners and clerical workers, and spend much more on medical and housing, for example. If you haven’t retired yet or if you still have a paycheck coming in, reconsider any plans you have for retirement until your savings are substantial. When you think you have enough, do an experiment before you stop working: Calculate your expected Social Security benefit per month and live on that amount for a long time, at least several months. Six months would be better. What looks fine on paper might not actually be fine when it comes to living on those limited dollars. And remember that the longer you wait before claiming Social Security, the higher your benefit will be when you do. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

Hello I am Pixie. My mom usually just calls me a freeloader. She’s all mad she had to go to Wegmans to buy eggs this winter. I’m not a machine, lady. Sheesh. I like to spend my days rolling in a sunny dirt pile, eating bugs, snacking on my moms vegetable gardens, and pretending I’m tough to my friends. I may be the smallest but I’m a boss! I’m sick of all this white stuff and looking forward for some greenery to snack on. Happy Spring!

Counting the Cost: Victor Farmington Library

BY JANET OLEXY

“A THRIVING, MODERN LIBRARY IS A DIRECT REFLECTION ON THE COMMUNITY IT SERVES.” ~TIM NIVER

O

ne needn’t drive far to see that Victor and Farmington are booming; new housing developments and business projects are springing up all over. Did you know that Ontario County is one of just two NYS counties that are growing? (Saratoga County is the other). Or that 70% of all new building permits in Ontario County are coming from Victor, Farmington, and/or Canandaigua? According to US Census data, the combined populations of Victor and Farmington grew from 17,608 in 1990 to 30,030 in 2020. It seems obvious based merely on population, that the current library— which was built in 1995—must be stretched beyond its limits. There are other indications of growing pains, however. Local organizations such as Serenity House, the Tree Board, PTSA, and others use library meeting rooms on a regular basis. In 2019, VFL’s two meeting rooms were reserved over 400 times for private use. Tutors and their students have had to sit on the floor at times due to a lack of room. Prior to COVID, 400 - 500 people a day used the library. In 2021, 199,000 items were borrowed from VFL and approximately 8,000 people attended inperson programs, despite current space restrictions.

Before developing its plan for a new facility, the Library Board sought community input. In 2019, a committee worked with Causewave Partners via a grant to develop a survey for residents. It was distributed via social media and on the library website, and hard copies were made available at the Victor and Farmington Town Halls, local laundromats, and handed out to summer concert goers. Of the 734 people who responded, 82% said we need a bigger library. They wanted more books, quiet places to read, comfortable reading spaces and more programs— basically, more of everything the library was already offering. “We’ve been working on this plan for five years,” said Director Tim Niver, “and the new library is sized appropriately for the expected future growth of Victor and Farmington. Anything smaller than what is being proposed will be inadequate.” Site approval was granted by The Village Planning board, which reviewed required architectural and construction drawings and determined that a traffic study was unnecessary. The Board believes that maintaining a location in the village and close to schools is vitally important.

The new library will be funded in several different ways, including the If you think libraries are all about books, you need to visit one. Libraries sale of the current building, donations, grants, government funding, and property taxes. In response to have evolved with the times, offering so much more to the communities concerns about costs, VFL Board they serve, including a wide variety of educational programs for adults President James Myers, a retired CFO, and children, such as estate planning, cultural performances, tax said, “We’ve reviewed each cost line preparation, tech support, health and wellness, book discussions, by line, eliminating nice-to-have crafts, Lego building, and more. Several years ago, I invited a Chinese features and swapping out UR Researcher to a program at a local library. He was astonished to construction materials. As a result, learn that he could get a library card, borrow materials and attend we’ve been able to cut nearly $700,000 programs free of charge. He told me there are no public libraries in from the total cost, while still China. proposing an effective and efficient library.” Businesses currently operating at the proposed site have been offered relocation assistance by the Local Development Corporation, ensuring minimal effect on existing tax revenue. The question is not “Can we afford a new library?” but “Can we afford to NOT build a new library?” A public vote will take place on May 17 from 6am - 9pm at the Victor Primary School. Absentee ballots will be available after April 18 through the school.

With 400 - 500 visitors a day, the library is already an economic driver for the village. The VFL Board believes that a bigger, enhanced library can be a catalyst for future growth in the area. It will be a community resource and destination. An internal coffee shop (locally owned and operated) will create a warm, inviting atmosphere. An outdoor event area will host community concerts, movie nights, car shows, and other events for residents to enjoy. A teaching kitchen will offer classes and an opportunity to partner with Victor Farmington Food Cupboard, helping others learn to prepare simple yet healthy meals. A new library will be able to accommodate more programs for people of all ages, and the children’s area will be separated from the adult area so children can play enthusiastically without disturbing those looking for a quiet place.

Sprinkle with remaining basil. Serve warm with crackers, flatbread or pita chips, if desired. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

BRICK HOMES FIGHT FIRES THE LONGEST (NAPSI)—Firefighters report that it takes about an hour and a half for a fire to breach a brick home-as compared to fiber cement in under an hour and vinyl siding in just minutes. Choosing brick exteriors to protect their own firehouses, firefighters say brick homes help slow the spread, offering the extra few minutes to help save lives and property as this brief video shows. While the International Residential Code (IRC) does not require cladding on singlefamily homes to have a fire rating, the International Building Code (IBC) acknowledges that fired-clay brick has tested to provide a minimum one-hour fire resistance rating alone, regardless of backing material. This is something that synthetic materials—such as fiber cement—cannot claim. Primarily made of clay, brick is classified as a noncombustible material that will not burn, melt or combust. In a one-hour severe fire test conducted independently for the Brick Industry Association (BIA), vinyl siding burned after only 18 minutes, fiber cement failed within one hour and fired-clay brick withstood the flames after one hour. The test was conducted in accordance with ASTM E119, the Standard Test Methods for Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials. Learn More: BIA is the nationally recognized authority on clay brick construction representing the nation’s distributors and manufacturers of clay brick and suppliers of related products. NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * When you make a meringue, be sure to spread it all the way to the crust on all sides. If you do, it will not shrink. * After your dishwasher has run its course, open up the door and let the dishes air dry. On cold days, there’s the added bonus of humidifying the house with the steam that escapes. * Research says that the best time of day to exercise is in the morning, but the truth is that the best time for YOU to exercise is when you will go through with it. So, try out different times of the day, and when you find one that fits, schedule it in your daily planner and block the time out at least three times per week. * Making your own flavored yogurt is cheap and much better for you. You can avoid a lot of added sugar. Start with plain, unflavored yogurt and add: pureed fruits, toasted oats, honey, vanilla or almond extract, or plumped-up raisins (add enough hot water to cover a tablespoon of raisins and let sit for a minute or two). Yummy. * “If you stick the end of your celery stalks in a cup of water and rocks (or in some very damp dirt), they will begin to regrow. This is a great way to have a never-ending supply of celery. You also can regrow scallions from the root end.” -- Y.L.J. in Missouri * Metal shower hooks can be used in the sewing basket to hold safety pins. They can be used in a jewelry box to corral costume rings as well.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Diet Is a Powerful Tool to Improve Heart Health

$129 NEW PATIENT SPECIAL

---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have a strong history of premature heart disease in my family, and I have been having some unpleasant side effects of blood pressure medicine. I decided to try a completely plant-based diet: grains, vegetables, legumes, fruit, seeds and nuts. After about a month on the new diet, my total cholesterol dropped 44 points to 159, and the other numbers went from borderline to normal, as measured by my cardiologist. My blood pressure, which was often high in the mornings (typically 150+/90), was 118/68 this morning. I’ve only lost about 5 pounds in the past couple of months, and I’m probably still 8-10 pounds overweight. I am pleased with the results, but why didn’t any of my doctors recommend this? -- J.S.B. ANSWER: Diet is a powerful tool for improving overall health, especially heart health. I believe it is underemphasized by most physicians. Changing from a meat-based diet to a mostly plant-based diet often prompts improvements in blood pressure, cholesterol and weight. Your results are better than most, but by no means unheard of. You haven’t said how you feel, but many people feel more energetic as well. Many others are able to come off of some (occasionally all) of their medications, which of course reduces side effects. Why don’t physicians recommend it? I think it’s a combination of reasons. Some doctors don’t realize how powerful the effects of dietary change can be. A good deal of patients are highly resistant to making changes, so physicians are used to their dietary advice failing. Also, taking the time to get an accurate diet history is hard, personalizing dietary advice is harder, and writing a prescription is easy. It is not necessary to have a 100% vegan diet like yours to experience a benefit. A mostly plant-based diet has substantial benefits. It’s easier for some people to make incremental changes.

HOW TO SUPPORT A LOVED ONE WITH CANCER Prepare yourself. Caregivers may be so busy looking into what they can do to help a loved one diagnosed with cancer that they overlook or forget the need to prepare themselves. The ASCO recommends that caregivers process their own feelings about a loved one’s diagnosis before they begin caring for that person. This can ensure their focus is where it needs to be when their loved needs help. In addition, caregivers can do everything to learn about their loved one’s disease ahead of time. Many patients are not forthcoming about their disease, and even those that are may find it physically and emotionally exhausting to repeatedly share the details of their disease with friends and family. Learning the basics on your own can save the patients from these feelings of exhaustion.

HOW WOMEN CAN KEEP THEIR CAREERS GOING FORWARD Define career expectations. Defining career expectations early on can be beneficial in various ways. Such expectations can guide career choices and provide a road map that women can utilize to stay the professional course. This can help women make decisions about their careers when they come to forks in the road. For example, if a path to promotion seems blocked, women can examine their established career expectations to help them decide if it’s time to seek new employment. Defining career expectations also can help women effectively communicate with mentors about their goals, and mentors can then use that information when offering guidance. Expectations need not be concrete, and it’s likely they will change over time. But they can serve as an important foundation for anyone from young female professionals to experienced executives looking to make changes or determine the next step in their careers.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OFFICE MORE ECO-FRIENDLY Turn computers off at quitting time. Frequently turning computers on and off can produce small surges of energy each time the computer is turned on. But the United States Department of Energy notes that this energy surge pales in comparison to the energy consumed when computers are left on for long periods of time. When going home for the day or leaving your desk for more than 20 minutes, whether it’s during lunch hour or to attend a meeting, turn your monitor off. If you expect to be away from your computer for more than two hours, turn both the computer and the monitor off. Employers who make these suggestions to their employees may reduce their office energy consumption and save money along the way. CANANDAIGUA-NAPLES EDITION

DISTRACTIONS THAT CAN AFFECT EFFICIENCY AT WORK Smartphones: A 2015 CareerBuilder survey of hiring and human resources managers from various industries found that employers cited smartphones and texting as the biggest productivity killers in the workplace. Professionals no doubt recognize how distracting their phones can be during the workday, and they may feel powerless to avoid them. But they’re not. Alter notification settings so the phone only delivers the most important notifications (i.e., children’s schools, meeting reminders, etc.) during the day. Turn off notifications from news, sports and entertainment apps.

THE RIGHT WAY TO LEAVE A JOB Take coworkers’ feelings into consideration. Be open and honest with coworkers, but do not gloat that you are leaving the company and they are not. And if anyone has strong feelings about your departure, accept their point of view and do not react outwardly. Take things in stride as much as possible.
