HOST A SUCCESSFUL YARD SALE Price things reasonably It’s tempting to overprice items, but a good rule of thumb is to mark things for one-half to one-third of the original value. Be open to negotiation, but try to haggle with a “buy one get one” approach, rather than marking down the price considerably. After all, the goal is to get rid of as many items as possible, with financial gain a distant second. CLIFTON SPRINGS: MOVING SALE, 2221 Tremble Road, April 30 & May 1st (12-6pm). MOTHER’S DAY CELEBRATION IDEAS The Reader A 2017 survey from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics found that women read more than men. Women read an average of 19.8 minutes per day, which can make a Mother’s Day focused on Mom’s love of books an ideal and unique way to spend the day. Kids can write Mom their own books, and Dad can help put them together. Dads can visit rare bookstores and look for original copies of Mom’s favorite books that she might not find elsewhere.

How often a puppy will need to defecate depends on the food being fed and when meals are offered. The American Kennel Club says that most puppies will need to poop shortly after a meal, anywhere from 15 minutes to a few hours. Puppies typically can hold urine a little longer overnight, but probably won’t be able to go the entire night without a potty break. Many pups can last around six hours from the last time they’ve gone out. An early-morning bathroom break will be needed, or consider penning the dog with puppy pads to catch the mess until the dog gains greater control over its bladder.

Look for EV-friendly lodging: Many hotels now feature charging stations exclusively for guests with EVs. Some hotels include the cost of utilizing such stations in their parking fees, while others may charge an additional amount. Either way, the convenience of finding a hotel with its own charging station outweighs any extra costs, as cars can be charged overnight while guests are asleep, leaving more time to travel in a vehicle that’s fully charged each morning.

S E V RA Earth Day thanks! For the past 10 years, Riga Recreation has participated in the Monroe County Park's Earth Day celebration by holding an annual Pick Up the Parks event at all Monroe County Parks. This year's initiative at Churchville Park was an overwhelming success with 58 community members volunteering their time to pick up trash and tree damage due to recent high winds. We even had two bins filled with pharmaceutical waste products brought in. Many thanks to the following organizations that participated this year: Village of Churchville, Town of Riga, Waste management, Churchville Lions and LEO Clubs, Newman-Riga Library, Chili Soccer Assn. and students from Churchville and Chestnut Ridge Elementary Schools. Many thanks to all! - David Thomas, Recreational Supervisor, Town of Riga Thank you! Thank you to Bob Thompson for organizing and running the 5th annual Take Pride in Hemlock Litter Pick Up. Additionally, we would like to thank all the volunteers who came out to assist in this yearly project. We had all kinds of volunteers from Livonia school's National Honor society to a local business owner to several residents as well as Little Lakes volunteers all pitching in to make a difference. This year, it was noticeable that there was much less garbage. We feel that the "Take Pride in Hemlock" is spreading through this hamlet year-round. Keep up the great work! Grateful! What an amazing outpouring of folks who came to the Little Lakes Community Center in Hemlock for the free trees, shrubs, and plants giveaway on April 23rd! (Perhaps 100+ came early.) A big thank you to Tawn Feeney for purchasing the seedlings and handing them out in celebration of Earth Day. A number of people who didn't receive the giveaway came inside the Center for the first time and learned about what is offered here for them. Even if we ran short on trees, we hope you'll come back and take part in our many other events and classes. Thank you to all community members for their support of our activities.

Shameful It is a shame that the ship named after the Sullivan’s war heroes is in the disarray that it is. I can’t understand how a ship of one of the most powerful nations in the world could be let go to the point of sinking at the Navel Yard. This is a slap in the face to all Veterans and moreover the heroes it was named after and the ones who served on this ship. I am a Vietnam Vet, and I am appalled that this could happen. It is bad enough that Veterans have to wait 40 years to get a disability rating when pushed out of the service. Someone should be [held accountable] for the way this ship has ended up. Forgetfulness It appears to me that many people have forgotten how production all over the world seemed to come to a halt because of the COVID pandemic. These shutdowns caused shortages in many products, and thus prices for those products rose. These people also seem to have forgotten the backup in the ports that prevented shipments from getting to the marketplace, which also helped to cause shortages. I believe most of our economic problems can be traced directly to COVID. Be patient. Things will get better, hopefully sooner rather than later. Sensitivity please! To the woman who saw my father’s work van at my house and called his employer to try to report him for “goofing off.” His employer is very aware of his whereabouts and the fact that, unlike someone like you who always has access to bathroom facilities and a kitchen, he may be entitled to a break. May your husband and children always be entitled to the same considerations. In addition, my dad had just completed a messy job around the block from you. (Yes, we know you called!) He was unable to clean himself up thoroughly afterwards, as you would have been able to do in a home or office building. So, a convenient quick stop at his daughter’s house to use her facilities allowed him to, among other things, make himself more presentable before his next call and get water to go. I hope that if your loved ones have blue collar jobs one day, you will have gained more sensitivity to these issues. I would have addressed you in person, but I am much too angry, and I want others to be aware, as well.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Surviving Inflation

Recent government figures outlined food price increases for one month. The numbers are grim. Fruits and vegetables went up 2.3%, the highest since 2010. Dairy went up 1.9%, the highest since 2011. Cereals and bakery items went up 1.1%. Averaged over the past 12 months, food prices have risen 8.6% (the highest increase since 1981), with poultry and fish climbing 13% and beef soaring 16%. Wow! We knew it was bad because each time we go to the grocery store, we’re spending more to get less. But to see the figures laid out in print just brings home how bad things have gotten. Bloomberg (www.bloomberg.com), whose economists we need to keep an eye on, predicts that this year we’ll pay an additional $5,200 for all household items (including gas, heating fuel and everything else) and services, which it calculates at $433 per month. We need to reconsider how we feel about food banks. We seniors generally don’t want to do that, saying, “Oh, others need it more.” Well, at this point, maybe we are those others? In a few days, I’ll be driving three of my senior neighbors to the food bank for the weekly pickup. It will be their first time, and they are nervous. But I made a scouting trip last week, parking across the street from the line of cars and walking over to talk to the person in charge. I was able to report back: No, they don’t take your name or ask questions (except maybe to ask if you’d prefer apple or orange juice). No, they’re not judgmental. No, it’s not leftover expired food, and the fruits and vegetables were fresh and lovely. The people were friendly and welcoming, happy to do what they were doing. Just go to the food bank. You won’t be judged. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

HOW SMALL BUSINESSES CAN MAKE THE MOST OF LOCAL MARKETS Make things easy for customers: Cash was once king at community festivals and marketplaces, but the convenience of plastic and even touch-less payments has long since replaced hard currency as consumers’ preferred method of payment. In fact, a recent study from Visa found that contact-less payment usage in the United States grew by 150 percent between March 2019 and March 2020. Card readers are inexpensive and easy to use. Businesses can still accept cash payments, as accepting both cash and card increases the chances of making more money.

Canandaigua Mom Vanessa Talks Motherhood & Supporting Fellow Moms BY AMANDA DUDEK

s many moms can attest, motherhood can be both a wonderful adventure and an incredible challenge. One of the most valuable assets a mother can have is a strong and caring support system. Vanessa Samuels, Canandaigua mom and manager of the Care Net Pregnancy Center of Canandaigua, shares some of her new mom realizations as well as how meaningful it is to be able to support other moms. Samuels and her husband moved to the Canandaigua/Ontario area in the fall of 2018. Samuels was expecting their first child, and the couple decided to move closer to her family. Their daughter, Jordyn, was born that winter. Much as it has been for many women, new motherhood was a revelation. “Holy cow! I just don’t feel like you can totally fathom how much work a mom actually does!” exclaimed Samuels. She says that although she has always had a wonderful relationship with her mom, she now appreciates all her mother’s hard work so much more. “[Motherhood] has given me a newfound appreciation of what moms do and go through,” Samuels explained. “How did my mom provide a meal for us every night, keep the house clean, and keep us all bathed?!” Perhaps, like many of us, you know the struggle all too well. As Samuels opines, there is so much no one ever tells you about becoming a mom. “I think you can never be prepared enough to be a mom,” she said. “There are many challenges involved in being a mother. I often found myself asking, ‘Why did no one tell me about this?’” One example Samuels gave came from her days breastfeeding. “I didn’t realize I had to consume more calories while breastfeeding, and my blood sugar dropped terribly. It was another mom who suggested to me that perhaps I should eat during the process. She put together a basket of snacks for me to place beside my nursing station.” The simple act deeply touched Samuels. “It was one of the more profound things that happened. I appreciated just recognizing the beautiful support and the desire to be a part of that in my community.” When Samuels realized she wanted to return to the workforce, this desire was still strong. Then, a friend directed her to the Care Net Pregnancy Center of Canandaigua. “I started at Care Net in October 2019,” she said. “I would say that a good number of the moms who come to see me visit because they may not have strong support elsewhere.” The opportunity to be a mom helping other moms was just what Samuels was hoping for. “It is such a beautiful thing,” she enthused. “Sometimes, moms come in because they just need a break. Many moms do not get breaks, and that can be especially true for stay-at-home moms. Helping other moms and moms-tobe is such a beautiful experience and not only for them. Providing that safe place, that sanctuary, for them is beautiful for me.” One of Samuels’ favorite ways to help other moms is by taking them to Care Net’s boutique to let Three-year-old Jordyn Samuels introduced mom, Vanessa Samuels, to motherhood!

them “shop” for clothing. “I feel we have great items in our boutique,” she said. If I wouldn’t let my kid wear an item, we don’t keep it. The clothing is quality, and the experience really is like going shopping!” Samuels also enjoys sharing Care Net’s pregnancy classes which can be attended virtually or in-person. “There are over 100 classes on all kinds of topics and answering all kinds of questions,” she explained. “I have also taken several of these classes, and it is fun to hear how other moms are applying what they have learned, as well. New content is always being added, and I believe anyone could benefit from them.” Care Net has given Samuels the opportunity to promote moms helping moms and to form a supportive, local mom community. The nonprofit offers several services, all free and confidential, which include pregnancy tests, pregnancy options and peer counseling, referrals, post-abortion counseling and education (PACE) and parenting classes, among others. COVID, however, saw Care Net meeting additional needs. “COVID was really hard for a lot of people,” observed Samuels. During the height of the pandemic, Care Net saw many moms opening up about domestic violence in their relationships. “We are not officially that service,” she said. “However, it was beautiful to see that these women trust us so much that they feel safe enough to share such a hard part of their lives. We were then able to connect them to the right agencies to get them out of those situations and to give them support.” At the same time, Care Net never stopped supporting them. “We never want to say to the moms that come to us, ‘Okay, we got you here; you’re good,’ and walk away,” said Samuels. “We are here for them starting from the first time they come in, often pregnant and unsure what to do. We work to make sure these moms truly have everything they need. When a mom or dad succeeds, their children succeed, creating generational change. That helps everyone.” When asked her feelings on motherhood thus far, Vanessa Samuels didn’t hesitate. “It is hard work, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. We will forever have these beautiful memories that we get to create as a family.”

WAYS TO SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES If you own a small business, keep business cards, flyers or a sign advertising another small business in the area to show mutual support.

A variety of wedding day cosmetic preparations are geared toward the brideto-be. Gentlemen generally limit their wedding pampering to a haircut and possibly a self-tanning product to have a golden glow in their wedding photos. As social norms continue to relax and guys grow more comfortable and confident taking care of their skin, hair and bodies, the list of services men undergo in advance of special occasions may widen. One service that many men have already embraced is the manicure. Manicures neaten the fingernails and treat the skin and cuticles of the fingers and can be just as beneficial for men as women. In fact, male-geared hand and foot grooming have already sprouted a niche market, including the Hammer & Nails Grooming for Guys franchise that was featured on the popular show “Shark Tank.” Nail technicians can help guys achieve a clean look and alert men to possible underlying health issues present on their hands and feet. According to Dr. David E. Bank, a clinical professor of dermatology at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, technicians are trained to recognize possible fungus and other infections within the nails. Depending on his profession, a man’s hands may be on display and the appearance of those hands can help close deals or present a more professional look. Manicures can help men achieve that. They’re also ideal for special occasions like weddings, when guys want to be groomed to perfection. GQ magazine advises that the occasional professional manicure can offer nice, even nails without out-of-control cuticles - no polish or gel tips necessary. First-timers may be hesitant to give manicures a try. While salon services can differ, here’s what a typical manicure will entail. • Nails are cut and filed. • Hands will be soaked in warm water and/or oil to soften skin and cuticles. • Cuticles are pushed back or trimmed. • Moisturizer may be applied, and hands are given a brief massage. • Clear polish can be used if desired. However, a thorough buffing also can create a healthy shine to the nail. Men may want to visit nail salons during off-peak times if they are shy about requesting services.

* Two ways to save money on laundry expenses: First, spring and summer are an excellent time to get into line-drying clothes -- especially towels and jeans that take longer to dry thoroughly in a dryer. Then, clean out and shorten your dryer’s vent hose to make your machine more energy efficient. It cuts down on drying time, too, saving you time AND money.

MEN CAN GET MANICURES FOR THEIR WEDDING DAYS, TOO

NOW HERE’S A TIP

Eating Out on Mother’s Day Expect to wait. Even with a reservation, you’re bound to spend some time waiting at the restaurant. Other families may be lingering at their tables, as no one wants to rush Mom out of the door. Plan accordingly for a potentially long wait time. This means having a snack before you leave. Don’t arrive famished, as no one wants the dining party to be hungry and cranky, which is not a good way to celebrate Mom. Have plenty of snacks and drinks on hand for young children, as well as activities to keep them entertained.

Mary (Conway) Welch

DID YOU KNOW?

Friday, April 22, 2022 Syracuse / Dansville- Mary Gail (Conway) Welch was called home by the Lord on Friday, April 22, 2022, in the home of her daughter Jean Byrnes and her family. She was surrounded by loved ones. Born in Dansville on October 15, 1933, she was the daughter, of E. Leo and Mary Amelia (Burnside) Conway. On August 30, 1952, she married the love of her life, Gerald James Welch, Sr. who predeceased her in August of 1996.

According to Mental Health America, individuals’ reactions to the death of a loved one can elicit unique emotions linked to their relationship to the deceased. For example, MHA, a community-based nonprofit focused on promoting mental health, notes that a child’s death could inspire different feelings than the loss of an elderly spouse. When parents lose a child, that death may arouse a sense of injustice that can overwhelm the child’s parents as they contemplate lost potential, unfulfilled dreams and, in certain instances, the child’s suffering. Elderly individuals who lose a spouse may be overcome by feelings of loneliness. Recognition of these different reactions is important because it can help individuals and their support networks more effectively cope with their grief.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by three brothers, Neil J. Conway, Robert J. Conway and James A. Conway; her sister-in-laws, Angie (Taylor) Conway, Doris (Wiseman) Conway, Claudette (Schirmer) Conway, Betty Jean (Bradley) Conway and Flora (Blum) Welch along with her brother-in-la,w John J. Welch. She is survived by her children, Marlene W. ( Jon Spinner) Foudriat, of Scarborough, ME, Gerald J. (Rene Sherry) Welch, Jr., of Dansville, Mary Amelia Welch, of Dansville, Julie ( James) Dentinger, of Rochester, Lynn (David) Watson, of Middletown, DE, John E. (Catherine) Welch, of Henrietta, and Jennifer W. (Robert) Brushafer, of Dansville. In addition, she is survived by 33 grandchildren and 26 greatgrandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews. Gail was a Communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Dansville. She coordinated hourly Adoration to our Lord each Friday for years andily and faith, she was committed to Catholic education. Her support of St. Mary’s Catholic School never wavered over the years including, but not limited to, her work with Catholic Schools of Dansville, the alumni association of St. Mary’s, St. Patrick’s and Guardian Angels. Her volunteer work for the Church also included the laundering of all the Church linens for many years. Relatives and friends were respectfully invited to attend calling hours on Monday, April 25, 2022, from 4:00 - 7:00 PM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church at 40 Elizabeth Street, Dansville. EARLY WARNING SIGNS OF ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE Decreased or poor judgment. Individuals with dementia may make consistently poor decisions and may start paying less attention to their physical appearance.

ASSISTIVE DEVICES HELP PEOPLE REMAIN MOBILE Disabilities affect people from all walks of life. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that around 55 million Americans have a disability of some kind. Of these people, 33 million have a disability that makes it difficult for them to carry out some daily activities. Statistics Canada states that, as of 2012, 13.7 percent of the population age 15 years or older reported having a disability that could impact daily life. People with disabilities may need assistive devices to reclaim some measure of their independence. For example, millions of people rely on wheelchairs or walking aids to get around. These are called assistive technology and rehabilitative devices, which include tools, equipment or products that can help people with disabilities get around more easily. These devices may be as small as magnifying glasses for reading to as large as wheelchairs. The National Institutes of Health state that 2.2 million people in the U.S depend on wheelchairs for day-to-day tasks and mobility. More than six million use canes, walkers or crutches to assist with mobility. Assistive devices can be highly effective, but only when they are used properly and safely. Assistive devices should be measured for each user. Many walkers are height-adjustable. The width of a device also is important. A walker or another device that is too wide can affect mobility or require modifications to be made around the home. Weight is another consideration. The device should be lightweight so it can be maneuvered, but also weigh enough to provide enough stability to keep users upright. Users should proceed slowly and favor their stronger sides when relying on canes or walkers. Devices should not be used to climb atop other items like step stools. Children should not be allowed to play with or ride on assistive devices. If there are safety belts or locks on any assistive technology, they should be put in place before use to prevent further injury. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

Can Prilosec be Taken for More than 14 Days? ---

Add fresh flavor to grilled chicken Backyard barbecues provide the perfect opportunity for grillmasters to experiment with their favorite foods. Those who want to give grilled chicken a tasty twist can whip up this recipe for “Citrus Recado Chicken Breasts” from Eric Treuille and Birgit Erath’s “Grilling” (DK Publishing).

DEAR DR. ROACH: What’s the story with Prilosec? Doctors routinely tell people with GERD or acid stomach to take this forever. Yet it clearly describes only a 14-day treatment on the box. A physician assistant told me that because of a rare infrequent condition some users have that the manufacturer is legally bound to post the 14-day limit, but that the general population can safely ignore it. Can you enlighten and reassure those of us whose physicians have said to take it long term? -- C.D.C. ANSWER: The patient instructions in the over-the-counter versions of proton pump inhibitors, such as omeprazole (Prilosec), do recommend a 14-day course. However, longer courses may indeed be prescribed by a licensed prescriber, such as a PA. Even so, there are relatively few people who need lifelong medication. Those who do may have a condition such as Barrett’s esophagus, in which PPIs -- the most potent medical treatment to suppress stomach acid -- are necessary. They not only relieve symptoms, they are also prescribed in hopes of reducing the risk of developing cancer of the esophagus. The data on this are still not clear. For people with acid reflux (also called gastroesophageal reflux disease), PPIs are usually not needed lifelong. However, it may still be reasonable to use these drugs long term if the prescriber feels the benefit outweighs the risk. There are several risks of long-term use of PPIs. Stomach acids are important in protecting against bacteria, and two kinds of bacterial infections are more common in PPI users. The first is in the colon, especially of Clostridium difficile, where PPI users are about 30% more likely to be infected and may do so even without the antibiotic use that is the most common risk factor for C. diff. The second is pneumonia, although the apparent association may not be as strong as formerly thought. Low stomach acid may decrease absorption of vitamins and minerals, especially magnesium, iron and vitamin B12. PPIs were thought to increase the risk of a rare tumor, gastric carcinoid, based on data from rats, and of colon cancer. Those risks have not been seen in humans. Early data suggest increased risk of kidney disease and dementia. That risk appears to be small, if it even exists. Long-term PPI use has some risk of side effects and should be used only when there are benefits to PPIs that can’t be obtained with other treatments, including other medications and lifestyle changes. This especially includes better diet, weight loss when appropriate and not eating right before bed. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Dog Bitten in Snout Keeps Licking Wound DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My dog “Jesse” was bitten on the face by another dog, injuring his snout and nose so badly that it required several stitches. I can’t get Jesse to stop licking and pawing at the wound, and now he’s tearing out the stitches. The wound looks infected. What should I do? -Kamo M. DEAR KAMO: Head straight back to the veterinarian to get the wound treated for infection and closed up again. This time, have Jesse fitted for a cone-shaped E-collar. It’s jokingly called the “cone of shame,” but is an important medical device for helping to heal just such an injury. Dogs really don’t like E-collars, and they can cause stress, but if he’s able to paw at the wound, it must be worn. You can take it off Jesse at mealtimes so he can access his food, but it must go right back on. There are a few other protective collars available that are more comfortable, like padded rings, but these may not stop the pawing. Jesse’s also licking his nose, which is understandable since it probably feels weird and swollen and itchy. This can be a problem area because dogs naturally lick their nose throughout the day. The vet may give you medicine to help it heal or may recommend an overthe-counter antibiotic ointment. Put the medicine on as directed. Help reduce the chance of infection by having clean, fresh water for Jesse to drink (to clean his tongue before licking his nose) and replacing any manky old dog toys (which have a lot of germs) with clean chew toys. Don’t let Jesse sniff at or eat nasty stuff (dogs love roadkill and other animals’ poo) until the wounds heal. Send your questions, tips and comments to ask@pawscorner. com.

DID YOU KNOW? Getting out and about is a vital component of many seniors’ daily lives, but it’s important that aging men and women recognize how much exercise is healthy for them. The Department of Health & Human Services notes that adults need a mix of physical activity to stay healthy. That mix should be a combination of moderate-intensity aerobic activities, which can include golfing, swimming and even gardening, and muscle strengthening activities like weightlifting that make the muscles work harder than usual. The DHHS recommends adults combine 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week with at least two days of muscle-strengthening activities. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that these guidelines are safe for individuals who are 65 and older, generally fit and have no limiting health conditions. Individuals who do not fit that criteria should consult with their physicians before beginning a new exercise regimen, as it’s possible that they could be putting their health at considerable risk if they attempt to follow guidelines designed for people who are generally fit. It’s also important that healthy seniors avoid overdoing it in regard to exercise. Though the DHHS suggestions are the minimum recommendations, going too far beyond those guidelines without first consulting a physician could increase seniors’ risk for injury, illness or even death.
