Mr Ladder 585-284-0196 CONTROL CRABGRASS BEFORE IT APPEARS Crabgrass is a common problem that appears in summer. According to Lowes, crabgrass plants produce thousands of seeds between midsummer and early fall. While the first frosts of late-fall or early winter kill the crabgrass plants, the seeds produced by the plants remain dormant throughout winter and then begin to grow as the ground temperature warms up with the spring and summer thaw. As a result, controlling germination, which is the development of a plant from a seed or spore after a period of dormancy, is the key to preventing crabgrass from becoming an unsightly blemish that can harm your lawn in summer.

Beard combs are designed to minimize damage to facial hair when used and can help to smooth facial hair that can appear unkempt. Some barbers even specialize in grooming beards, which can be helpful for men who are short on time or those with especially long beards that could use a little love and attention.

Gardeners What do I need to start composting? Compost is organic material that can be added to soil to help plants grow. Food scraps and yard waste together currently make up more than 30 percent of what we throw away and could be composted instead. Making compost keeps these materials out of landfills where they take up space and release methane, a potent greenhouse gas. All composting requires three basic ingredients: • Browns - This includes materials such as dead leaves, branches, and twigs. • Greens - This includes materials such as grass clippings, vegetable waste, fruit scraps, and coffee grounds.
from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County • Water - Having the right amount of water, greens, and browns is important for compost development.
What are the easiest flowers area and raked it in. After keeping it watered to plant and take care of for on dry days, the plants came up nicely and bloomed with a vengeance. Mrs. McCarthy beginning gardeners? I’ve never had a problem sowing and growing was thrilled and got many compliments from zinnias. When I was a teenager myself, my visitors who admired her carpet of many neighbor hired me to tend, weed, and grow colors. Other flowers I would recommend to her flower beds. Your compost pile should have an equal amount of browns to greens. You should also alternate layers of organic materials of different-sized particles. The brown materials provide carbon for your compost, the green materials provide nitrogen, and the water I turned over the soil and chopped up the provides moisture to help break down clumps. WHAT IS A WILL? The online financial resource Investopedia notes that wills are legally enforceable documents that dictate how people want their affairs handled and assets allocated in the wake of their deaths. Wills should include a host of information, including who a person wants to assume guardianship of their minor-aged children should they pass away. This is especially important information to include in a will, as surviving relatives may have to go to court to contest guardianship if parents do not dictate who they want to serve as guardians in their wills.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Finding the Cellphone That’s Right for You When it comes to buying a phone, there are so many choices that the decision can be difficult. Much depends on what you want to do with it and how much you want to spend. What can we do on our phones? Depending on the type of phone (and our skill level), we can make calls, get voicemails, look at maps, write shopping lists and notes, roam the internet, play games, receive and send text messages, take photos, have face-to-face meetings and more. Some of us, however, would rather keep it simple. We want to make and receive calls, period. If a phone comes with a few more features, that’s fine, but we probably won’t use them. How to choose: Decide what you need the phone to do. Ask a lot of questions, especially of tech-savvy family members. Think about whether you want to pay upfront for your phone or have a long-term contract. Decide whether the phone is only for emergencies or if you’ll use it daily. There are a handful of good phones out there if you search the internet for “phones for seniors.” You’ll find dozens of websites describing the various phones now available. Visit the phone stores near you, if possible. You’ll need to handle the phones to be sure you can read and press the buttons with ease. Smaller phones are lightweight, but aren’t necessarily the best if you can’t see the screen or the buttons are tiny. The bigger ones, on the other hand, might be too heavy. Look into the flip phones as well, the ones that fold in half for ease of carrying in a pocket. Look for discounts. For example, you might get a discount if you’re an AARP member. If you’re on Medicaid or SNAP benefits, see if you qualify for the Lifeline discount. And remember: Keep it charged!

By JoAnn Derson * “Planning a new roof? Choose a light color for cooling benefits. Also check with your home-insurance company to see what discounts it might offer for different styles or options, like upgraded hurricane clips or fire-retardant materials.” -R.E.W. in Tennessee * Cut a cord of firewood in the spring, and cure it yourself. Store it away from the house and properly care for the wood by stacking it where it will have access to the sun and wind to dry it. Let it season for six months or longer, and you’ll have firewood ready when the temperatures drop again. * “If you’re melting chocolate in your microwave, do yourself a favor: Line the bowl with wax paper or parchment paper. The chocolate is still easy to stir, but when you take it out, you can scrape all the chocolate off the paper so that none is wasted!” -- A.A. in Florida * “Place a bit of clear tape over the spot where you are going to drive in a nail to prevent the nail from cracking drywall. It will go right in. Also, if you’re nailing into wood, drag your nail through some soap (bar soap is fine) before striking it. This does the same thing -- it will keep the wood from splitting. You can even keep a travel-size bar of soap in your nail apron for just this purpose.” -P.K. in New Jersey

Random Act of Kindness! My 13 year-old son and two friends gathered together some change and took scooters over to Byrne Dairy for ice cream yesterday. As they were counting out their coins, two separate, kind individuals offered them a few dollars to help make up the difference. My son said afterward, “Mom, that kind of generosity makes me want to help other people like those folks helped us.” Thank you, whoever you are, for making a positive impression (and for the ice cream)! Money Well Spent! I would like to thank the beautiful young woman who handed me $5. She said I dropped it as I was cashing out at the Salvation Army in Batavia. Thank you so very much for your honesty! May all good and wonderful things come your way. - Mary Answered Prayers Prayers were answered on April 29th by a Batavia woman named Virginia. We were in need of a puppy stroller for our handicapped doxie named Symon. Virginia called us and said she had a stroller to fit Symon’s needs. On Sunday, we took a ride and met this awesome lady at a fast food place. She was very pleasant as she brought the stroller to us. In today’s world, there are still great and awesome people. God bless you, Virginia! Thank you so much. Symon really enjoyed it. Thanks again for your thoughtfulness! - Symon’s Mom

Bumblebee Prejudice You know, why does everyone hate the bumblebees that are just starting to come out this time of year? I, personally, enjoy seeing the chubby things buzzing about the newest dandelions, sipping nectar and loading their leg pockets with pollen. I feel that too many people get the urge to lay a dust-rising stomp on those cute things when they see them buzzing about their business. Well, I have something to say to you, mister, mind your own beezness!

Big Price Tag Our local library proposes spending an estimated $16.6M for a new building. I love the library and use it regularly, as did my children who continue to have a passion for reading, for which I am thankful. While we need to do something to expand the size of our library and its services, this proposal is not it. The community has not had the opportunity to review the “space study” behind the proposal. Additionally, the timing is poor. We are just coming out of a pandemic and facing record-high inflation. Now is not the time to raise the “Library Tax” from just over $800k to $2.5M annually. We need to do something to modernize our Library as well as to expand its size and the services it can deliver; however, I believe there are other options which would better serve our community. I will be voting “no,” but I still love our library. Paying Off Debt Will taxpayers please pay off my mortgage and car loan even though I did sign for them, accepting the responsibility to repay them? What a pile in Washington!

Cause of Chronic Cough Has Doctors Stumped

DEAR DR. ROACH: I picked up a cough while traveling in Europe more than two years ago. No other symptoms have ever presented. Since that time, I have received every test imaginable, including spirometry, multiple breathing tests, CT scans, X-rays and most recently a bronchoscopy. Nothing was discovered through any of these tests. Other than the cough, I am very healthy. The cough is driving me crazy, however. I have been prescribed every type of medication, and nothing helps. My doctors are at a standstill and have nothing further to offer. I don’t know where to go from here, but I know I can’t live my life with this cough. I avoid a lot of personal interaction because it is so disruptive to constantly be coughing. I would greatly appreciate your help with this, and any advice regarding what steps need to be taken next. -- P.M. ANSWER: Chronic cough (lasting more than several months) is most frequently a result of acid reflux, asthma or postnasal drip, although there are many more causes, including infection, which would be a concern given that you have a clear idea of when it started. Despite an extensive evaluation for cough, it is not that uncommon that people are left with no explanation but with a persistent cough. There are other, less-common treatments at this point, some of which your doctors might not have tried. The first is the medication gabapentin (Neurontin). This is used for a condition called laryngeal neuropathy, and I have had a few spectacular cases where the cough disappears entirely. People have written saying that their doctor prescribed the medication for them after reading it in the column and they also had relief, even after decades of persistent coughing, so I think this condition may be more common than I have ever thought. A second has been a cough suppressant. I am very cautious about using opiate drugs, and it is certainly not appropriate for some people, but cautious use of tramadol in selected patients has been successful in reducing, but not eliminating, cough. Just yesterday in the clinic, one of the residents I supervise had a patient with chronic cough who had dramatic improvement through the use of speech therapy. Looking it up today, I find trials showing significant improvement, if modest, with this approach, as well as several ongoing trials. Given the potential side effects of gabapentin and tramadol, I think I will be making more referrals to my speech and language pathology colleagues, and suggest you speak with your doctors about some of these options. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Popular Naples Seed Farm, Fruition Seeds, Hosts Many Free & Low-Cost Gardening Opportunities BY J O D I C A RUS O
A
delightful drive from Jamestown to Naples, NY, for seeds brought Janet to Caruso’s Cafe on a Saturday morning in early April. Janet was staying at the Naples Hotel, came into the café, and began sharing her love for gardening, seeds, seed libraries, and the local seed farm here in Naples: Fruition Seeds. Over espresso, we talked about all of the wonderful community offerings Fruition provides and how delightful it is to visit the farm. One is always met with a warm greeting by owners Matthew and Petra who are always happy to share their wealth of knowledge. Soon, many other patrons joined our conversation about seeds, gardening, and food sources. We all unanimously agreed that Fruition Seeds is playing a vital role in our relationship to food, gardening, and understanding that we are all ultimately linked to seeds. We are nourished daily by seeds through what we eat, what we see in the world around us, and by what we sow.
growing guides, eBooks, Plant Now Charts, and free online courses with over a hundred tutorials! Free farm tours are held at Fruition every Sunday from 2:15pm-3:30pm. There, guests will find beauty, bounty, breathtaking fields, murals created by local and regional artists, a Garden Store, and a community of seed savers gathering in a safe, picturesque space.
Fruition Seeds is a family farm co-founded in 2011 by Matthew Goldfarb and Petra PageMann to share seeds— particularly organic, regionally adapted seeds—k nowledge, inspiration, and insight as well as the tools needed for us all to thrive. Located on 24 organic acres in the heart of the New York Finger Lakes, Fruition Seeds cultivates over 300 varieties of certified organic vegetables, herbs & flowers. On any given day, you will find the crew on the farm, tending to seed saving, growing, storing, and sharing. Absolutely beautiful, Fruition offers free farm tours, workshops based on sliding scale fees, seed swaps, free U-pick daffodils, and, along with seeds, a collaboration with a regional Amish family to share trees!
Janet is coming back in a few weeks, and we will visit the farm together. We will share our love of food, community, and seeds, as well as for Fruition Seeds, which provides such an amazing opportunity to connect with our seed ancestors.
Janet came back to the café for lunch after spending her morning at Fruition Seeds. She showed me pictures of the seed library she helped launch by providing seed packets from Fruition. We talked about the importance of seed libraries, seeds swaps, and seed saving. Naples Library has a seed library where community members can get seeds to garden and grow some of their own food. Seed libraries are also an important step in developing a network of seed savers who save regionally adapted seeds and preserve genetic diversity. Seed Libraries are popping up all over. Be sure to check your local library and be a part of the community in saving seeds while blessing yourself and others with the bounty you grow! “Every day you eat you have been blessed by a seed!” shares Petra. Seeds are life. Seeds are community. To hold a single seed in your hand is to hold a direct living link to our ancestors. Fruition Seeds hosts seed & plant swaps both locally and regionally. They offer ongoing gardening & seed saving workshops classes, free

Petra encourages people to stop by, saying, “Even if you have never planted a seed you are nourished by seeds daily, so don’t be shy!”

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Try Rescue Network for Breed-Specific Adoptions
~ All Your Excavation Needs ~
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read your recent column about using caution in the purchase of specific breeds of dogs or adopting from a shelter. Please advise your readers that there is a third option. Almost every breed is assisted by a rescue group, usually handled by breeders. Locating such a group for a specific breed can be done by contacting the American Kennel Club (AKC). We had a wonderful Bernese Mountain Dog that was too small to be a show dog, and a Sheltie whose father was a champion but was still too large to be a show dog. This gives adopters the breed they want and dogs who otherwise would end up in shelters -- and possibly be put down -- get a family instead. -- Kathy F. DEAR KATHY: Thank you for highlighting this excellent option. The AKC Rescue Network pulls together over 450 rescue groups, dog breeders and specialists in rehabilitation and rescue to save dogs that would otherwise be placed in shelters or euthanized. Find more information about their work at www.akc.org/akc-rescue-network. Breeds are listed alphabetically to make them easier to locate. Fostering and rehabilitation of dogs through the network is somewhat unique in that dogs stay in the foster/rehab until they are rehomed. Breeders and dog fanciers are among the most enthusiastic participants in fostering and rehabilitating dogs. They take on the expense and time commitment to work with specific breeds and prepare them for a loving family. But they also get to know the dogs, their temperament and their needs -- so that they’re matched with the right people. Check out this network and the work that they do. Thanks again, Kathy.

TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE (NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips: Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches. Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home. Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place!

National FROG JUMPING D A Y WHICH FROGS ARE THE SAME? National Frog Jumping Day has turned into a tradition that came to life from the idea of a short story. Mark Twain, one of the most famous and celebrated authors in literature, published his first short story named “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” in 1865. The premise of the story is about a man named Jim Smiley, a compulsive better. He trains a pet frog he names Dan’l Webster and bets his frog can jump higher than all the other frogs in town. Inspired by this story, Calaveras County in Northern California started hosting a Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee during the third week of May. Their main event is the frog jumping competition. One frog named Rosie the Ribeter has held the jumping record at 21 feet, 5 3/4 inches since 1986.

VOCATIONAL SCHOOLING CAN PAVE THE WAY TO HIGH-PAYING JOBS JOBS FOR STUDENTS PROFICIENT IN MATH Math is an important subject and school and proficiency in arithmetic serves people well when it comes time to leave the classroom and enter the workforce. As demand for workers proficient in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics continues to grow, students can benefit by working as hard as possible when studying such subjects. People with strong math skills who thrive on data and crunching numbers may find a diverse array of jobs available to them when they are ready to enter the workforce, providing an entryway into a lucrative and stable career.
Many students believe that the next natural step after graduating from high school is to go off to college. Secondary education has become such a common transition that many parents begin saving for college tuition as soon as their children are born. Although college can be the next chapter in a student’s education, many teenagers still choose to attend trade school. Television personality Mike Rowe says the country is in the midst of a skilled labor shortage because workers lack the necessary training to fill the hundreds of thousands of available jobs. Lack of information may drive the notion that trade jobs are nothing more than a backup plan if college doesn’t pan out. However, by realizing that trade jobs, along with short-term vocational training, is a smart investment - and eventually a lucrative career choice - attitudes about trade schools and laborintensive jobs may shift. A great number of college graduates enter the workforce with degrees that may not help them land jobs. And these students typically carry thousands of dollars in tuition debt. Many college grads are underemployed and working in jobs that aren’t even in their fields of study. Career and technical schools help students develop specialized skills that make graduates immediately marketable in their chosen fields, and trade salaries can be very competitive.
