If it comes to light a homeowner did work without a required permit, he or she may face penalties; may have to tear out work done to have it inspected or redone; some may be unable to sell a home until permits have been obtained and work has been done to code. Homeowners insurance coverage also may be affected if homeowners do not obtain the proper permits.

HOME SERVICES

PLANNING AHEAD IS VITAL TO A SUCCESSFUL RENOVATION Get necessary permits: Permits are designed to ensure the work is being done to code and in a safe manner. However, they are not without additional costs and processing time, and that can cause some homeowners to skip this step. According to the home information site The Spruce, building permits cost anywhere from $400 to about $2,200 for new home construction. Building permits for smaller projects can cost $100 or less, and typically are based on a percentage of the anticipated cost of the project.

BUDGET-FRIENDLY WAYS TO UPGRADE A LANDSCAPE Plant to create privacy. Homeowners spent more time at home than ever before during the pandemic, and some might have grown tired of seeing what their neighbors are up to. Fencing might be the first solution homeowners consider when looking to make their landscapes more private. But new fencing installation can be expensive, costing homeowners between $1,667 and $4,075 on average, according to BobVila.com. A more costly and natural solution is to plant trees around the perimeter. Speak with a local landscaping professional, who can survey the property to see which trees might thrive and provide the privacy homeowners want.

TIPS FOR NEGOTIATING WITH CONTRACTORS Do your homework. Getting the best price typically require shopping around and not settling on the first bid. Experts recommend getting at least three estimates on the same job - and be sure to let each contractor know that you are soliciting multiple bids. This alone may entice a specific contractor to give you his or her best offer up front. Avoid simply choosing the lowest bid. Look at quality of work, reputation and reviews. If you like a costly contractor more than another, see if that contractor is willing to match a lower bid to win the job.

Be especially careful with power tools. Power tools can do a lot and they’re fun to use. But it’s important that DIYers do not let fun distract them from safety. The Power Tool Institute urges power tool users to wear personal protective equipment, including eye and hearing protection and a dust mask, whenever using power tools. The PTI also advises users to make sure tools are powered down before plugging them in and to inspect the tool before using it. Inspections can confirm that all guards are in place and that tools are up to the task at hand. Much like it’s unsafe to overreach on a ladder, overreaching when using power tools increase the risk for mistakes, accidents and injuries.

FACTORS THAT CAN ADVERSELY AFFECT MOOD Hunger: A 2018 study from researchers at the University of Guelph in Ontario found evidence that a change in glucose levels can have a lasting effect on mood. The study, published in the journal Psychopharmacology, found that rats injected with a glucose metabolism blocker experienced stress and depressed mood due to the resultant hypoglycemia. The study lends credence to the notion that many people have about feeling moody when they don’t eat.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Prepare to Age in Place? Been There, Done That I read an article the other day encouraging seniors to make plans to age in place. Aging in place means to stay in our own homes as we get older so we can maintain our independence. Planning for it means making whatever changes are necessary to ensure that our homes are safe. Planning also can include surrounding ourselves with a network of people and services for support. My first thought was ... that’s what we’ve been doing for the past two years, and we certainly didn’t have time to plan for it before COVID sent us all into lockdown. Yet here we are ... we survived. And how did we do that? We created our own little support networks, mostly by phone since our meetings were canceled. We checked in with each other when the store finally stocked long-missing items. We baked and left cookies on the porches of those we knew would appreciate them. We learned Zoom and other online video conference programs so we could have face-to-face meeting with family and friends. We beefed up our computer skills, at least enough to enable us to place togo grocery orders at the store or arrange for delivery and to make purchases that Amazon could bring to our door. We roamed YouTube in search of exercise videos for seniors and took free classes of all types. We took up the scatter rugs that could cause trips and falls because we knew that the EMTs who came to our rescue would be leery of COVID and come through the door fully outfitted in biohazard suits. We dared to ask questions and learned that the library will deliver books and the pharmacy will mail prescriptions. All in all, we survived our forced aging in place just fine. We seniors are a tough bunch. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

DID YOU KNOW? Data from the United States Department of Justice indicates that partner violence accounted for 20 percent of all violent crime in the U.S. in 2018. The World Health Organization defines intimate partner violence as behavior within an intimate relationship that causes physical, sexual or psychological harm. Such violence can include acts of physical aggression, sexual coercion, psychological abuse, and controlling behaviors. Violence perpetrated by both current and former spouses and partners falls under the umbrella of intimate partner violence. Domestic violence is so prevalent that the National Network to End Domestic Violence reports that it fields more than 19,000 calls on a typical day. Anyone who is a victim of domestic violence or suspects a loved one or acquaintance is being abused is urged to call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233 (SAFE) or 1-800-7873224 (TTY) right away. HOW SMALL BUSINESSES CAN MAKE THE MOST OF LOCAL MARKETS Do your research. Chances are business owners can find a number of festival or marketplace opportunities in or around their communities each month. Some of these festivals may be large scale events like annual Christmas bazaars, while others might be more toned down affairs that occur each week. Business owners can research local festivals, paying particular attention to how communities market the events and which businesses attend them. Community turnout is another significant factor to consider. Such research can help business owners determine which festivals best suit their businesses and what they’re hoping to accomplish.

Walking Difficult After Visit to Bowling Alley ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: My partner and I are in our 60s, exercise regularly (three to five times per week), eat a well-balanced diet and are of average weight. Recently, we went bowling for two games and found ourselves sore in the area right below our buttocks. We were very sore for several days, making walking difficult, especially up and down stairs. What would have caused this area to get so sore? We named it “bowling butt” for lack of a medical term. -- M.B. ANSWER: Starting a new activity will often cause people to overuse some muscles that aren’t used to the strain. Bowling involves forceful extension of the thigh, which is the gluteus maximus muscle, as well as other muscles in the hip to maintain stability. Two games were enough to exhaust that muscle, and the untrained muscle will often suffer small tears, which take days to heal properly. The fact that you were sore with activities involving thigh extension helps confirm the diagnosis. Some people think it’s lactic acid in the muscle, but that is gone after a few hours. Naming a disease is serious business, and I did a look for similar names in the literature. I did find “Wii butt,” a pain sensation after playing games, including bowling, on the Wii video game system, but none for actual bowling. I’m not sure “bowling butt” will catch on, however. ***

Make things easy for customers: Cash was once king at community festivals and marketplaces, but the convenience of plastic and even touch-less payments has long since replaced hard currency as consumers’ preferred method of payment. In fact, a recent study from Visa found that contact-less payment usage in the United States grew by 150 percent between March 2019 and March 2020. Card readers are inexpensive and easy to use. Businesses can still accept cash payments, as accepting both cash and card increases the chances of making more money.

Gardeners Are there plants that help with mosquitos? Make your garden work for you in the quest to combat mosquitoes by planting varieties that naturally deter them. Options abound for mosquito-repelling plants, although there’s minimal research to prove they actually work reliably. Thus, you may need to experiment with several to see what might work for you. Popular choices include mint, lemon balm, marigolds, basil, chrysanthemums, eucalyptus, rosemary, lavender, lemongrass, catnip, peppermint, sage, and more. Another strategy is to spread cedar mulch throughout the garden. It offers double benefits by deterring

from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Livingston County mosquitoes with its scent and soaks up and retains moisture in the soil. Why are my Cherry tree branches dying? It most likely has Black Knot disease. Black Knot is a disfiguring and potentially lethal disease of trees and shrubs in the genus Prunus. This genus includes stone fruits such as wild, fruit-bearing and ornamental plums and cherries. The disease is present only in the woody parts of trees, occurring most frequently on twigs and branches and sometimes on trunks and scaffold limbs. The warty swellings first become visible in late summer or the following spring

on new shoots. At first the knots are somewhat greenish and corky, but with age they become black and hard. When they occur on twigs and small branches, prune out the infected branches about 4 inches below the knot. On large branches and trunks, the knots can be cut out. This is done most successfully during August when the fungus does not extend far beyond the visible swelling. Be sure to remove any infected branches in the winter if black knot returns after August. Remove the diseased wood and about 1 inch of clean wood around the knot. It is best to remove knots before growth begins in the spring and to take them away from the orchard, as they will continue to produce spores for several weeks after re-

moval. Be sure to destroy infected tissue to limit spread of spores. Unfortunately, this disease is hard to control and might require the replacement with a tree not in that family or susceptible to Black Knot.

Honesty at Work As I was standing in line in a Canandaigua store, a customer ahead of me purchased an item costing $50.00. The cashier picked up only the two $20 bills. The customer picked up the $10 bill and left the store with her item. Moments later the customer came back and paid the remaining amount. She taught my daughter that honesty is always the right thing to do. She did the right thing, and it was definitely noticed. Missing Parts Please beware of thieves who steal catalytic converters from cars parked in public parking spaces next to apartment buildings. It happened to me while borrowing a friend's 2000 Honda Accord. When I parked it on Tuesday, May 3rd, it was purring like a kitten. The next morning, I started it, and it was as loud as an outboard motor. This was in the middle of [local town], a well-guarded suburb. For a thief, this part would net $100-150. For the owner, it will cost $2,300 because of the costly connections and labor for a new catalytic converter. The salvage yards I called all swore they don't deal with catalytic converters. What will they steal next? I suggest using a garage or carport. - Sadder but Wiser Contact Us Why do so many businesses, services and stores even have in their sites a “contact us” form where you can ask a question or make comments? Some give you the runaround just to find the form. Others don’t respond to questions or return an answer. Recently, I submitted one asking a simple question. Nothing. I submitted it a second time, still nothing. I finally went to their competitor and got the answer I was seeking. I’m sure they’ll probably use the COVID excuse. Well, word of mouth carries a lot of weight, especially in a small community. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Changing Times Some people live only in the past. Those who believe in no gun control are, I believe, some of those people. When this country was formed, guns were a necessary part of life. Many, if not most, people depended on their guns to provide food for the table and to defend themselves against wild animals. There was also the threat that the country would be attacked by another country. While that is always a possibility, even today, I would have to say that guns would be of little help now since there are much more effective weapons in today’s world. Today, guns are more of a problem in America than a solution. Every day on the news, there are stories of innocent people being killed or injured by guns. Too often, stories tell of mass shootings with young children being the victims.

When he wasn’t doing that, he was active with the Victor United Methodist Church in Victor ushering, driving folks to appointments, and helping in the clothes closet. There will be a Celebration of Life for Carl on Friday, May 20th from 11am-1pm at the Victor First United Methodist Church, 106 East Main St., Victor. Because Carl truly never met a stranger, we ask that, in lieu of flowers, you would carry on his kindness and pay for a stranger’s meal next time you’re out in his honor.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On May 18, 1917, six weeks after the United States formally entered World War I, Congress passes the Selective Service Act, giving the president the power to draft soldiers. Of the almost 4.8 million Americans who served in the war, some 2.8 million were drafted. * On May 20, 1506, Italian explorer Christopher Columbus dies in Spain. Columbus, and most others, underestimated the world’s size, calculating that East Asia must lie about where North America sits on the globe. * On May 24, 1844, before members of Congress, American inventor Samuel F.B. Morse dispatches a telegraph message from the U.S. Capitol to a railroad station in Baltimore. The message -- “What Hath God Wrought?” -- was telegraphed back to the Capitol a moment later.

Veterinarian Wait Times Keep Getting Longer

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’ve been waiting more than three months to get my dog “Maisie” in for a regular checkup and shots. The veterinarian’s office says they are running behind and had to delay her appointment. Talking to a friend across the country this week, I learned that they are waiting months to get their pets to the vet as well. Is this a national trend? -- Cheryl K. DEAR CHERYL: Unfortunately, it is, especially in major metropolitan areas. The wait for a vet appointment was already lengthening before 2020. After months of waiting, pet owners are all trying to get caught up on checkups and vaccinations. Many more people adopted pets during the lockdown in 2020 to keep them company. And many pandemic restrictions, such as building occupancy limits, are still in place. Add to this a chronic shortage of veterinarians -- an industry that sees some 2,000 vets leaving every year, citing a poor work-life balance. That’s twice the rate of physicians quitting their profession, says the American Veterinary Medical Association. And the lower availability of vet appointments can be seasonal. For large animal vet practices (which deal with livestock, horses, cattle, etc.), spring is their busiest season with calving and foaling taking place. The warm weather reminds pet owners to take their companion pets to the vet as well. Until the wave of catch-up appointments subsides, just be patient. Keep the appointment that is already set with the veterinarian and schedule Maisie’s checkup for next year, if possible.

FRIDAY, MAY 20, 2022

Aya Baya! Dear Readers, Forgive me for using this week’s Hometown Story for selfish purposes. It happens to be a milestone birthday for one of my favorite family members, my aunt Alison, aka “Aya,” who is an avid Penny Saver reader. I want to give her a birthday wish in her favorite publication, so she knows just how special she is! “Aya” got her name quite frankly because I couldn’t say “Alison” as a kid. Something about that vowel + L + vowel combo was too hard for me as a 2-year-old. Then, I apparently gave up after three letters. Either way it stuck, and she became Aya forever after to our family. Western New York has always been home to Aya. She, my mom, and their siblings grew up on a farm in Niagara County. Being 10 years younger than my mother, they didn’t spend a great amount of time together as kids. But after I was born, they became extremely close. Aya started visiting a lot and coming to our family vacations. We loved camping, and my dad did not! Being from the old country, it’s just not in his DNA. But Aya was always game, and we had some great times camping outside together in Maine, the Adirondacks, Cape Cod, and even down to the Carolinas. She also loved coming to my school sports events, concerts, plays, you name it- she was always there! So, what else makes her so great? For one she’s got a terrific sense of humor and loves anything that involves family. She’s the one that has to show up because her presence ensures the mood will be light and fun. She’ll laugh at jokes, good or bad, and her positivity is contagious! She’s also a great sport about being teased, whether we joke about her insistence on going to bed before 9 every night, planning ahead for daylight savings time (LOL), or avoiding overly windy days outside. Jokes aside, what’s been the most fulfilling part of knowing Aya is watching her with my kids now. Growing up we never lived closer than an hour and a half away, but we recently became co-residents of Ontario County. Now, I get to see my kids with the same excitement that I had growing up whenever Aya and “Uncle D” show up at our house. Plus, she always shops from advertisers in the Penny Saver. And just as you came to all my events in school, thank you for now supporting what I do as a professional, Aya.

Though no one knows the true origin of the first scavenger hunts, which evolved from folk games, Elsa Maxwell has been credited with the creation and popularization of the scavenger hunt in the 1930s. DID YOU KNOW?

HOW WOULD you LIKE TO ENJOY:

Retirement can seem like it will never come for young professionals. But time can be a sieve, and retirement age can arrive in the blink of an eye. Young adults who have not planned accordingly for retirement can find themselves in financial straits at a point in their lives when they want to kick back and enjoy themselves. Financial experts advise that financially solvent people should begin saving aggressively for their retirements early on. Ideally people should start saving in their 20s when they first leave school and begin their careers. The sooner one saves, the more time money has to grow. Vanguard says that the person who saves $4,500 per year over a career spanning 45 years can reach a goal of having more than $1 million in savings by the time he or she retires. Compounding interest and investment matches from employers can further secure professionals’ financial futures.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Need a patch for old woodwork? Try mixing paint (whatever color you’re using) and flour. Make a paste, fill in the holes and let dry. It’s hard like cement, and can be sanded into shape if necessary. * Use baking soda to scrub away stuck-on food on your grill. Sprinkle it on the metal brush, and scrub away. If your grate is beyond the power of fire and baking soda, remove it and lay it on the ground on some newspaper. Spray with oven cleaner and let sit (keep pets and kids away from it). Rinse with a garden hose and replace on the grill. * When you get near the end of a roll of paper towels, save it to put in your car. Put together a kit with the following items: a small bottle of Windex or other cleaner, a squeeze bottle of water, some wet wipes and the short roll of paper towels. Now you’ll always be ready for a quick on-the-road cleanup.

* “I have a plastic cup that changes color when the drink is hot. Oddly enough, it changes at the perfect temperature for my baby’s bath. So, I fill the tub and toss in the cup. When the cup starts to change back to its original color (blue), I know the bathwater is not too hot.” -- P. in Idaho * “To remove muffins or rolls from a pan, set it on an old, damp towel for a minute. The steam must loosen the bottoms, because they just slide right out. I thank my mom for this tip.” -- Janey R. via e-mail * Sprinkle baby powder in dish gloves to help them slide on in an instant.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On May 24, 1935, the Cincinnati Reds beat the Philadelphia Phillies 2-1 in Major League Baseball’s first-ever night game, played under recently installed lights at Crosley Field in Cincinnati.
