TELLING SIGNS COMMON INSECTS ARE INFESTING A LAWN Grubs: Grubs like to feast on the roots of grass right below the surface. Michigan State University Extension Turf & Landscape reports that grub damage can appear from March to early May or from mid-September to early November. The lawn and garden experts at GardenTech® note that wilted grass blades are often the first indicator of a grub infestation, which is followed by patches of brown turf and eventually death. Crows, skunks and moles eat grubs, so the sight of them in a lawn could indicate an infestation.

BUDGET-FRIENDLY WAYS TO UPGRADE A LANDSCAPE Plant to create privacy. Homeowners spent more time at home than ever before during the pandemic, and some might have grown tired of seeing what their neighbors are up to. Fencing might be the first solution homeowners consider when looking to make their landscapes more private. But new fencing installation can be expensive, costing homeowners between $1,667 and $4,075 on average, according to BobVila.com. A more costly and natural solution is to plant trees around the perimeter. Speak with a local landscaping professional, who can survey the property to see which trees might thrive and provide the privacy homeowners want.

Hello, my name is . I’m a 3 year old Maltese and I only weigh 10 pounds. I love to wear whatever my Mom picks out for me. I’m very particular about my toys but I like using them to bait my friend into playing. My favorite thing to do is sit in my parents laps whether they are working, exercising, or just hanging out. Nothing stops me from trying to lay on them. I was born to snuggle.

Dad gets to be king of his castle at least one day during the year. Come mid-June, children near and far scramble for ideas to treat their fathers to a special day and aw ard him w ith gifts for being a role model, provider and confidante. HOW BUSINESSES CAN SUPPORT THEIR LOCAL LGBTQ+ COMMUNITIES Participate in LGBTQ+ events. Public participation in events like Spirit Day, which is a day to support LGBTQ+ youth in their fight against bullying, is a great way for business owners to declare their support and respect for the local LGBTQ+ community. Pitch in with donations generated through sales or additional fundraising efforts and promote events via social media. Events such as Spirit Day are great ways to raise awareness and promote understanding, and they also provide ideal opportunities for business owners and their staffs to publicly express their support for the local LGBTQ+ community.

HOW SMALL BUSINESSES CAN MAKE THE MOST OF LOCAL MARKETS

EXPLAINING PRECISION AGRICULTURE

What are some examples of PA technology? Sensors are a prime example of PA technology that helps make farms more efficient and productive. Sensors serve various functions by helping farmers gather data on the availability of water in soil, the level of compaction in soil, leaf temperature, insect and disease infestation, and other areas. Weather modeling is another component of PA that can help farms be more costeffective and efficient. Whereas in years past many farms would need to manually assess certain variables to determine when to harvest, weather modeling technology has enabled some farmers to generate remote readings, saving time and money.

Do your research: Chances are business owners can find a number of festival or marketplace opportunities in or around their communities each month. Some of these festivals may be large scale events like annual Christmas bazaars, while others might be more toned down affairs that occur each week. Business owners can research local festivals, paying particular attention to how communities market the events and which businesses attend them. Community turnout is another significant factor to consider. Such research can help business owners determine which festivals best suit their businesses and what they’re hoping to accomplish.

The Blessing Room in Bloomfield Praises Local Farms BY AMANDA DUDEK

une is Dairy Month and an excellent opportunity to celebrate local agriculture and the many exceptional farm families who are our friends and neighbors. With local farms come many benefits, not the least of which is the well-known generosity of farm families, reducing food insecurity within their surrounding communities. Barbara (Barb) Blazek, Director of The Blessing Room Food Pantry, a Foodlink affiliate in Bloomfield shares the food pantry’s gratitude to these generous farmers. “Although we are a Foodlink affiliate, and Foodlink is our primary food provider, we are blessed to be in a more rural community like Bloomfield where there are several farmers,” said Barb. In 2021, the Ontario County Farm Bureau and the 2021 Ontario County Dairy Princess partnered with The Blessing Room to bring milk to families in need. “The 2021 Ontario County Dairy Princess was a Bloomfield High School student, and she did some of her service work volunteering at the pantry with us,” Barb recalled. “She just thought it was a great idea. They held a challenge to raise money for our us. That money enabled us to buy butter for the holidays, which was huge. Our clients love butter, especially at Christmastime when they do a lot of baking. It also allowed us to buy milk, which is a wonderful thing.” This generosity is often echoed by others in the agricultural community. “Several farmers help us by donating food to us,” said Barb. “For example, Wild Hill Farm is an organic farm and a CSA, I believe. After they grow their food and their members come and pick it up, they call us to pick up what is left, donating it to us. Very soon, I expect they will call again, and we will have fresh produce to offer our clientele.”

local farmers often provide the more fragile produce—leaf lettuce, Swiss chard, tomatoes, tomatillos—that are best eaten as close to when they are picked as possible so that they better maintain their nutrients.

Barb, who comes from a long line of Wisconsin dairy farmers, understands that farm families face lot of challenges. She would like to see them receive appreciation for all that they do. “I don’t think farm families get enough love,” Barb shared that The Blessing Room frequently purchases butter from a local she said. “Bloomfield is the most generous community, both farmers and all farm in Mendon during the holiday season when the pantry is in need of more our neighbors.” butter. “This farm market in Mendon sells us butter that is made by local farmers,” said Barb. I have noticed that during the day I frequently take a spontaneous deep breath. Is that sleep apnea while awake? I have coronary heart disease and have three stents. Will the CPAP machine help me in any way? -- A.P. ANSWER: It’s complicated. By far, the most common type of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea. This happens in people who are overweight, or in people whose neck anatomy predisposes them to the condition. During sleep, the upper airway collapses, preventing proper inspiration. This can be noticed by a sleep partner as choking, gasping or just not breathing for a prolonged time. The person eventually will wake up enough, due to lack of oxygen, to be able to take in a good breath, but will then fall back asleep. The process may happen hundreds of times a night, with the person often unaware. Sleepiness during the day (from never sleeping properly at night) and snoring are the most common symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea. CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure), which uses high pressure to keep the airway open, is the most common initial treatment for obstructive sleep apnea. In severe sleep apnea, the oxygen level in the blood can be so low for so long that the heart and lungs can be damaged, eventually leading to a type of heart failure of the right side of the heart. However, the situation is even more complex. People who have other kinds of heart failure, such as from repeated heart attacks, can develop the less common form of sleep apnea, central sleep apnea. Although this also may be treated by CPAP, it is critical to treat the underlying heart failure as well. Your doctor can tell you whether you have central or obstructive sleep apnea. Spontaneous deep breaths, sighs, are a part of normal human physiology. Sighs have several purposes, but the most important is to help keep the lungs properly expanded. Sighs might be more common in people with heart failure, but I do not know of any correlation with sleep apnea. ***

DID YOU KNOW? The word “prom” is short for “promenade dance,” an annual formal dance held for high school students, typically those in their junior and senior years. While the term “prom” might not be used across the globe, schools in many countries host similar dances for high school-aged students on the cusp of moving on to college. In the United Kingdom, proms did not become popular until very recently. Prior to the 21st century, secondary school students in the UK might have attended formal dances at the onset of summer to celebrate the end of a school term, while students old enough to be finishing secondary school might have attended a “Leavers Ball” to commemorate that milestone in their life. But a 2012 report in the Daily Telegraph noted than more than 85 percent of secondary schools in Britain now host school proms, which range from relatively informal gatherings to more extravagant affairs. In South Africa, students may attend a Matric Dance, which commemorates their final year matriculating in their high schools. German high school students celebrate their graduations rather informally, and such celebrations may even include some lighthearted mocking of their teachers. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Pet’s First Visit to the Veterinarian

3.8 partial wooded acres with Ranch home.

Open house June 13, 5-7pm

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m planning to adopt a cat soon. This is my first pet, and I’m looking forward to caring for it. The local shelter gave me a few instructions to follow, pre-adoption, including making an appointment for a veterinary checkup. Is there anything I should know about my cat’s first vet visit? -- Kara L., Buffalo, N.Y. DEAR KARA: Congratulations on deciding to accept a cat into your life! It will be a rewarding experience. I’m also glad that you’re doing your homework ahead of time to give your cat the best start on a new life. Here are a few tips that will help with your first veterinary visit: * Research local clinics ahead of time. Is there one that specializes in cats? * Purchase a cat carrier that best fits your cat (in terms of size, not decor). This will make transporting the cat from the shelter and to and from the vet much easier and safer. * Keep all paperwork from the shelter in a folder and bring it with you. * You should be able to be present during the exam. It’s a great time to ask questions about caring for your cat. Be ready to take notes. * Listen to the vet as he or she gives you information about your cat’s general health. Vets or their assistants often talk to you throughout the process, telling you what they’re checking for and the result. * Follow the vet’s instructions. If a follow-up visit or more tests are needed, make sure you do it. Write down special instructions like how much and what type of food to feed your cat, or instructions on giving medication. And don’t be afraid to ask for clarification if you don’t understand something.

Very nice and well-maintained 2 bedroom, 2 bath Ranch home with more bedroom potential. Master bedroom has full bath and walk-in closet. First floor laundry in the mudroom entry. Nice open floor plan in the kitchen, dining, living room area. Partial finished basement with walk-in root cellar. LP forced air heat plus a fireplace in living room. Upgraded vinyl windows, attached 2 car garage. 16’x32’ and 32’x32’ garages. Needs to be seen to fully appreciate. A $15,000 deposit is required on auction day by cash or certified funds payable to Horning Auction Company. Closing on or before September 5, 2022. No showing until the open house. FACTORS THAT CAN ADVERSELY AFFECT MOOD Chronic stress: Chronic stress has long been linked to a host of health problems. According to the Mayo Clinic, chronic stress puts individuals at increased risk for heart disease and weight gain but also issues that affect mood, including anxiety and depression. Individuals who find themselves routinely confronting bad moods may be dealing with chronic stress. Identifying the source of that stress and speaking with a health care professional about how to reduce and manage it may lead to improvements in mood.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles A Trip to the Museum

A local art museum, lacking many patrons because people are still avoiding crowds due to COVID, came up with a great idea: open the place to seniors. Those of us who’ve been locked down for too long, turning up our noses at proposed activities at the senior center, thought this was a swell idea. We did, however, decline the offer of a van. Instead, we all drove in our individual vehicles to avoid being breathed on by others. The museum was ... lovely. So excited was staff to have real and actual patrons that they pulled out all the stops for us. Young docents-in-training hovered, but not too closely, as we spread out in the large, high-ceilinged rooms clutching our brochures. Spend more than 10 seconds in front of a display of Mediterranean antiquities, and a docent would appear, many steps away, to tell us about the artifacts. Squint at the detail of a Winslow Homer painting, and there would be a docent offering a magnifying glass and talking about brush work. Look at the artistry of the Native American baskets and wonder how they got all those varied colors, and a docent would know. It didn’t hurt our feelings at all to be told later that these docents-in-training were students at a local art school and would get extra credit for their participation. They did a fine job. The senior center staff did too, surprising us with a bagged lunch on the museum grounds after our visit. There were enough picnic benches for us to spread out in the sunshine, and a male spouse was commandeered to tote around a cooler of iced drinks to hand out, along with a wide variety of chips for us to trade like school children. It’s a good thing I had my checkbook in my purse. Before I left, I purchased a membership as a Friend of the Museum. I’ll be back. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

One tool we can utilize is traps as a deterrent. The first one is to use burlap folded over and secured to the

tree to create an open suitcase or upsidedown V with the burlap. The caterpillars climb up the tree into the V suitcase and stop because they typically are not smart enough to crawl down the V and up again on the outside. We can then monitor and dispose of any found caterpillars in the trap. Another method is to use duct tape and to trap the caterpillars. You use the

tape to create a wide band around the tree and then create the V with the sticky side of the tape exposed so the caterpillars become stuck.

Teamwork After last Saturday’s event involving farm equipment and electric lines (and cable lines and telephone lines) in Oakfield, I wanted to put in a good word about how all the agencies involved worked diligently together for safety, protection, and repair during this incident. Although our services were off for a bit, the agencies involved responded quickly and efficiently. Having a bird’s eye view of this provided first-hand knowledge of all that was involved and the extent it took to repair and return full service to the residents of Oakfield. In present times, it is hard to justify the rising cost of just about everything, but to witness the manpower, the equipment involved, and to see how these people worked together as a well-oiled machine, (and it is dangerous work), I can understand where at least some of the money goes when paying for these services. So, I would like to say thank you again [to these people] for all they do. Lab Visit I just went to get my blood work done. I have bad veins and am always nervous when I have to get blood drawn. I love going to [local] labs because they cater to my individual needs and always do a good job. This time I got [name]. She had a beautiful personality. Although she had trouble getting my blood to go in the syringe, she [did] get the job done. She had to stick me twice. I always tell people that they get just one chance with me. After she had trouble with the initial stick, I told her that I would come back. For her to talk me into [trying] again was, in itself, a miracle...I want to thank her for getting me through the process. Hats off to her. See you [again next time]. Helpful Staff Thanks to Avon Officer Hall and the Landpro driver who each stopped to see if we needed help after driving over an object that left a gash in our tire.

Loud Obnoxious Neighbor! I’ve enjoyed my porch for 20 years. Four years ago, enter my new neighbor’s wife, who seems to enjoy screaming every sentence that comes to mind, including yelling at her 2 year old and yelling into the telephone like it was two tin cans connected by a string. Guess what? Your neighbors don’t want to hear it. I no longer enjoy sitting on my porch as I can’t stand the constant yelling that has replaced the birds chirping.

The Least Intelligent Recently, we heard of another mass shooting. This shooting was caused by what I consider the least intelligent type of person. That is, those who are prejudicial. Prejudicial people seem to believe that they had a choice in who their birth parents were. If people had that ability, then everyone would probably be wealthy and belong to a loving family, the same race, gender, and ethnic background. We would be so much alike that nobody would be able to tell us apart. That is not the case, and any intelligent person knows that. I thank God for our differences because it is those differences that make life more interesting. Lazy Jogging Pet Owner I was standing at the front door and checking out the start to a beautiful Sunday when I saw a woman jogging with her white dog through my front yard. I didn’t mind until the dog stopped for a bathroom break and proceeded to poop on my front lawn. I opened the door and made eye contact with the woman. She started pulling her dog and jogging away. Seriously, carry dog poop bags and clean up after your pet! It’s just rude, and I would have given you a bag! Busted To the couple who swiped my geraniums off my porch Saturday night: you’re on video! Enjoy my Mother’s Day flowers from my kids.

QUALITIES TO LOOK FOR IN A POST-RETIREMENT JOB Pressure-free: Regardless of what retirees did for a living prior to calling it a career, chances are they dealt with work-related stress. In fact, the American Stress Institute reports that 83 percent of workers in the United States suffer from work-related stress, while Statistics Canada reports that 62 percent of Canadian workers say work is their main source of stress. After a lifetime of confronting work-related stress, individuals who want to work in retirement should look for pressure-free opportunities. This is an important quality, as the ASI indicates that stress has been linked to increased rates of heart attack, hypertension and other disorders.

NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Save the peels from your oranges, and dry them at a low temperature in the oven. You can add them to a pot of coffee or tea for a flavor boost that is refreshing and delicious. * “If your tomato garden is experiencing caterpillars, try planting dillweed close to your tomatoes. It can provide a diversion, allowing your tomatoes to grow pest-free!” -- Y.F. in Florida * “Cure your color in new garments (especially dark- or bright-colored) by soaking the item in cold, salty water before washing. Make sure that the fabric will allow this! * “Take good care of quality paint brushes, and they will take care of you! Wash thoroughly in soapy water and rinse very well. After the brush is washed, combine enough water to cover the bristles and add two tablespoons of fabric softener. Swish for a minute or two, being sure to get it in the brush good, then hang to drip dry. Before you use the brush to paint, simply rinse the fabric softener away.” -- M.E. in Washington * Baking soda can be used as a tooth scrub. It’s particularly effective against stains, as it is a mild abrasive. * “When you are dusting, don’t forget the light bulbs. Dusty light bulbs can contribute to less-bright lighting and can shorten the life of your bulbs. Turn lights off when you are not using them. You will save electricity that way.” -- A.L. in Oklahoma
