HEALTH BENEFITS OF VEGETARIAN DIETS
Many people change their lifestyles in an effort to improve their overall health. Changing the foods one eats is one of the more common ways people try to get healthy, and many people find adopting a vegetarian diet helps them realize their goals.
Adopting a vegetarian diet can be a great way to improve personal health. Vegetarians may now find it easier to maintain their lifestyles than ever before thanks to the year-round availability of a variety of fresh produce and more vegetarian dining options offered at restaurants. Even premade vegetarian foods are more widely available at markets and grocery stores.
Approximately six to eight million adults in the United States eat no meat, fish or poultry, according to a Harris Interactive poll commissioned by the Vegetarian Resource Group, a nonprofit organization that disseminates information about vegetarianism. Many more avoid red meat while still eating fish and poultry.
Although studies into vegetarianism long pointed out the potential nutritional deficiencies of such a diet, the tides have shifted, and many nutrition experts now note how eating plant-based foods offers sufficient nutrition and can reduce the risk for chronic illnesses. A vegetarian diet may offer protection against cardiovascular disease, some cancers, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. Data published in the Proceedings of the Nutrition Society found vegetarian diets are high in carbohydrates, dietary fiber, essential vitamins and minerals; offer an abundance of antioxidants; and are very low in saturated fat. However, switching to a vegetarian diet is not enough to lose weight or get healthier. Choosing the right type of vegetarian foods - including whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and proteinrich legumes - and controlling portions is key.
Vegetarians may have low cholesterol, as well as fewer incidences of stroke and obesity and cardiovascular incidents than non-vegetarians. Whether this is entirely food-based, or because vegetarians tend to also embrace other healthy habits, has not yet been determined.
Botox Injections Used to Treat Overactive Bladder
DEAR DR. ROACH: In two weeks, I am supposed to get Botox injections for my overactive bladder (OAB) and my frequent need to urinate at nighttime. Are these injections safe? Are there any bad side effects? How long do they work? -- D.J.
ANSWER: The initial treatment for OAB symptoms usually consists of lifestyle changes (i.e., quitting smoking and avoiding medications that worsen symptoms at night), pelvic floor muscle exercises, and bladder training. If these are ineffective, medication is often used. If medications don’t work or cannot be tolerated, additional treatments are considered, such as Botox.
The underlying problem with an OAB are uncontrolled bladder spasms. Botox is a powerful suppressor of muscle activity. If just the right amount is used, the excess muscle spasms are reduced, and the person gets good results. However, if too much is used, the person may not be able to urinate spontaneously at all, so your urologist will be giving you instructions on how to self-catheterize, in case you are unable to void your bladder after the injection.
If you note that the leakage has worsened a week or so after the procedure, this is a big clue that the bladder is not functioning after the injection. This can last for months, but typically no more than three months. Fortunately, this complication happens uncommonly, in about 2%-7% of people. Other complications include infections and bleeding, but these are not common. Antibiotics are given to reduce the risk of infection. Very rarely, muscles outside of the bladder are affected, including generalized weakness and eye muscle weakness.
When it works well, most people start noticing benefit in a week or so, and relief typically lasts 9-12 months before another injection is given. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu.

A Chemical Engineering major at University of Buffalo, Maggie Coleman has been a real estate agent in Rochester for 11 years, making authentic connections and helping people fulfill their dreams. Maggie lives in Irondequoit with her fiancé, Anthony, and their three pups, Odin, Capellini, and JB. She and Anthony love the local food scene and love to dine out. She also loves to travel to Maine and “visit family and eat as many lobster rolls as I possibly can when I am there.” She loves running and walking around her neighborhood, or for a drive, she says she loves Chimney Bluffs.
An avid weightli er for almost 20 years, Maggie found herself paying more and more attention to her cardio workouts post-COVID. She says, “I have found that when I do more cardio-based activities, I feel better.” For the past year, she has tuned in more to tracking her step count and making sure she gets her body not only li ing but moving as a whole.
She also recognized a need in the Rochester community for groups with no cost and low stakes for women to get together socially, be
each month, with other outings sprinkled in. Walks typically range around three miles in a little over an hour, usually with at least one weeknight walk and a Saturday morning walk or two. Forthcoming will be longer weekend walks for those interested. Women come together to network, get fresh air, and get their steps in as they explore beautiful parks, trails, and communities around Rochester.
“Rochester is so big, so we strive to have different walking locations every time,” Maggie explains, adding that choosing locations across the community also helps “ensure we can reach the people of our community wherever they are.”
Joining RocGirlWalks means gaining a supportive community, improving your fitness by getting in steps, boosting self-confidence,
“When
women support each other, incredible things happen.”
and making new friends. Maggie says, “It’s an opportunity to be part of something so special while enhancing your overall well-being.”
Maggie says she’d love to continue to grow this amazing group, and she has set her sights on starting a podcast meeting with local businesswomen and sharing their stories with the Rochester community. She says, “I think there is a huge need to share more positivity in the community and I would love to continue to grow and do just that.”
Maggie says her top two favorite locations RocGirlWalks has visited so far are Turning Point Park and Durand Eastman Beach. She says, “Both have amazing trails that bring you by water and woods, and both of them were so beautiful!” Maggie looks forward to RocGirlWalks’ first autumn for walks. “Not only is it the best time of year, but the beauty of the leaves changing color and the smell of the crisp air – It is unbeatable!”
A big reason some women join walking clubs is for safety in groups, Maggie admits, and safety is paramount to RocGirlWalks. eir walk location changes with each meetup, with only a general area noted publicly, and members must be on Maggie’s email list to learn the exact meetup location. She helps reduce walker anxiety and increase safety by sending out detailed information on precise location and route (though once you arrive, it’s hard to miss the mass of women ready to welcome you, as I discovered when I met them), as well as parking and restroom facilities available at the particular meetup location.
Maggie Coleman’s story is a testament to the power of community, the joy of fitness, and the impact one person can have when they see a need and take action. Whether she’s helping someone find their dream home or leading a group of women on a walk through Rochester’s scenic trails, Maggie embodies a spirit of positivity, support, and genuine connection. RocGirlWalks is more than just a walking club; it’s a movement that brings women together, fostering friendships, promoting wellness, and empowering each member to thrive.

A Huge THANK YOU
In these times of rising food prices, it is so wonderful to see all the items that the Avon community donates to the Avon Food Pantry. They give not only non-perishable foods but toiletries, laundry soaps and overages from their garden. It is heart warming to see all the items coming in to help people in need. A big THANK YOU to all.
VENT
Rude and Dishonest People
Went to CHURCH rummage sale just a few minutes ago. It started at 8. I was the last person in line. Myself and the lady in front of me had to take our time going down two flights of stairs. Over 10 people found out the books were upstairs and made their way past us, almost knocking into us. Then a lady blocked the jewelry spot and no one was able to look. I was pushed again, so I paid for my 2 items and said “Sorry, I’m getting pushed around too much to look further.” The next person in line was a collector. The lady who was taking the money said “I marked these and they weren’t $2.00 each.” He said “it’s what’s marked,” and she said “Ok. Why?” It was a CHURCH trying to raise some money. How do you live with yourself? The cashier even said that wasn’t the price, he didn’t care. I left but paid what the price was. How do you cheat a church?
Balloon Releases Should Be Illegal
I think balloon releases should be illegal. Look it up: the harmful effects of balloon releases. Also you can look up ecofriendly alternatives to balloon releases. Remember, birds, fish, turtles, pets or any animal in the world can suffer due to balloon releases.

Here’s A Tip

* Repair enlarged screw holes with a wooden golf tee. Use a hack saw to saw it flush, sand and finish!
* Punch holes in paint can rims with a nail so the paint that gets sloshed on the rim will drain back into the can. To seal the can, wipe the rim with a damp cloth, and rub it with a little petroleum jelly and cover with a piece of plastic wrap and tap the lid back into place.
* While boating or fishing, tape small blocks of Styrofoam to your eyeglass arms so they will float if they go overboard. -- R.D. in Florida

Install a low-flow shower
The U.S. Department of Energy recommends that eco-conscious consumers looking to reduce their energy consumption install lowflow shower heads with flow rates less than 2.5 gallons per minute. This is especially important for people living in homes with dated fixtures. Water fixtures installed before 1992 might have flow rates as high as 5.5 gallons per minute, which is both wasteful
Test the flow of a shower head by placing a one-gallon bucket beneath a shower head running at the pressure you normally use. If the bucket fills up in less than 20 seconds, install a low-flow shower head.

HOW TO CUT COSTS ON HOME RENOVATIONS
Avoid peak seasons: You’ll pay more to install a deck or a pool right before the outdoor entertaining season. There also may be a premium to get work done right before a major holiday. Therefore, consult the calendar to find an off time for a renovation and book it then to save.

PAW’S CORNER
By Sam Marzotta
DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I recently visited an older relative who owns two dogs. Here in the Northeast, air conditioning isn’t common in older houses, and it’s been fairly hot for the past several weeks. When I went in, I saw both her dogs were lying down and panting because it was so warm inside. ere was no water for them, so I filled up their bowls and added a couple of ice cubes to each one. ey both drank nearly all the water. Please remind your readers that heat is dangerous for pets of all kinds, and even if they’re at home and indoors, they’re at risk. Sign me -- Concerned Cousin in Manchester, New Hampshire
DEAR CONCERNED: ank you. You just reminded them, and you’re absolutely right. Water needs to be available to pets at all times, indoors or out.
Heat injuries are no joke. ey can permanently injure or kill pets (and people). While much attention has been given to not keeping pets inside cars during the warm months, there are more danger areas to be aware of.
- If your dog is out in the yard, make sure they have a shady area to rest with plenty of fresh, cold water. Monitor them frequently: every 10 to 15 minutes.
- Homes without air conditioning can get very hot and stuffy, endangering pets of all types. Maintain airflow at all times with a fan and open windows, and always have water available.
When a pet shows signs of heat stress -- panting, lying down, whining or mewing -- get them to a cooler room immediately. If they don’t improve, contact the veterinarian.

HOW TO FIND A HOBBY
Commitments to work and family can make adults feel like they have little time for much else. But finding time to pursue hobbies can benefit men and women in various ways.
A form of escapism that can provide a much-needed respite from the hectic pace of daily life, hobbies can help men and women reduce stress by forcing them to focus on something other than the source of their stress. In addition, hobbies can be a great way to meet new people, an important benefit for working parents who may otherwise find it difficult to meet new people.
Finding a hobby may take some trial and error, as adults may find activities that once appealed to them no longer do, while other pursuits may require more time than men and women can reasonably devote. Adults looking for a hobby can consider the following strategies as they begin their pursuits. Think back to childhood. A childhood passion may provide the perfect starting point as adults look for hobbies. For example, adults who enjoyed painting as children may find they still know their way around a canvas and palette.
Ask around. Adults who want to find a hobby to foster social connections can ask friends, family, neighbors, or coworkers to recommend activities. This can help men and women make connections in their communities and/or reconnect with friends or family members with whom they have fallen out of touch.
Think small. Because there is often some trial and error in finding a rewarding hobby, it makes sense to avoid making too big a commitment right off the bat. Before buying lots of expensive equipment or materials or making a large time commitment, give yourself some time to try a hobby on for size. The first activity you try might not necessarily take, and walking away won’t sting as much if you had not committed much time or money.
Consider coaching or mentoring. Athletes who still have a passion for their favorite sports but can no longer meet the physical demands such sports require can stay involved by coaching youth sports. The same can be said for professionals passionate about their work who choose to mentor. These activities might not be traditional hobbies, but they offer a great way for adults to pursue their passions on their own time. Hobbies can enrich our lives and provide respites from the daily grind.

General eulogy preparation tips:
* Eulogies are for the living, and for everyone at a remembrance service.
* Be brief. People listen for three to five minutes. After five minutes, people stop listening.
* Do a bit of research. Talk to others. What are some childhood memories? Was there a favorite lesson learned? Was there a favorite quote or an inspiring song? What was the deceased like at work? What were some favorite accomplishments?
* Write out the eulogy. Even if you are an experienced speaker, during the emotional time of a rememberance service it is especially easy to wander.
* Write and speak from the heart. Be yourself.
* Practice the eulogy. Time it. Rehearse in front of an audience (one or two people). Listen to their feedback. Edit. Practice again.
* Have a back-up plan. In case you are unable to begin or finish, have someone else prepared to deliver the eulogy for you.
