A Big Thank You
The Humane Society of Livingston County would like to thank the Tom Moran Memorial Golf Tournament for choosing us as one recipient of the proceeds from this event. These much needed funds will go towards the care of the cats we take in from our county.
Thank You!
A grateful thank you to the young man from Henrietta who was visiting friends in Caledonia and was at the veggie stand on South Road as we pulled in at the same time. I just wanted 3 ears of corn and did not have exact change, and I was trying to figure out a way of getting change. He was very kind and said, “Don’t worry, I’ll pay for them” and proceeded to tell me “They have the best corn [he’s] had” and I must agree! It was delicious! Thank you for being so sweet and paying for my corn.
Like many local taxpayers, I used to enjoy scenic walks along the public pathways of our [local waterway]. But, this historic landmark has been desecrated in recent years, becoming a racing track for speed boats that soak unsuspecting pedestrians with their massive wakes that splash onto the walkways. I cannot even push my child in a stroller without her being nearly rundown by unlicensed ATVs and dirt-bikes. • 12 Yd. $425 • 20 Yd. $475 • 30 Yd. $525
ATM Fees local hometown bank
On Sunday we tried to get money out of our local hometown bank only to find that BOTH the outside and inside ATMs were out of use. Because of this we had to use another bank’s ATM and were charged a $3.75 fee. Now wouldn’t you think that our bank would refund that fee? Wrong! They said no we don’t refund those fees. All our money in this one bank and we can’t access it unless we go elsewhere. This is terrible customer service, and we definitely will not be doing any further loans or business with this bank. I’m sure if I asked a loan officer at this bank, they would refund it, but the tellers won’t. That’s enough for us.

HOW TO ENCOURAGE KIDS TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR TEETH
Parents of young children know that getting kids to brush their teeth can sometimes feel like pulling teeth. Kids have a long history of disliking dental care, which can frustrate parents who know the importance and long-lasting benefits of proper dental hygiene.
While many youngsters may never excitedly run to the bathroom to brush their teeth, parents can try various approaches to get kids to embrace proper dental care.
Start early. Parents should not hesitate to begin cleaning kids’ teeth once the first tooth appears. The earlier dental care is part of a child’s routine, the more likely he or she is to accept it as part of everyday life. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends using a softbristled brush with a small head. Ideally, use a toothbrush designed for infants, brushing teeth once per day at bedtime. The AAPD advises taking kids to visit a pediatric dentist when the first tooth appears, or no later than the child’s first birthday.
Make it a group effort. Young children love to imitate their parents’ actions and behaviors, and moms and dads can use that adoration to their advantage when trying to get kids to brush their teeth. Brush teeth together as a family, making it seem like an enjoyable twice-daily activity. Get down on kids’ level and show them how to brush. If kids are resistant, engage them in conversation while brushing so they don’t even realize they’re cleaning away.
Involve kids in choosing their dental care products. While parents should be mindful of the type of toothbrush their children use, always sticking with products recommended by their child’s pediatric dentist, let youngsters choose their toothbrush and toothpaste. Kids might prefer a particular flavor of toothpaste, and a colorful toothbrush with a favorite film or television character might make kids more enthusiastic and less fussy about brushing.
Compliment kids after positive dental appointments. When pediatric dentist appointments go well, compliment children and express your pride in them for taking dental hygiene as seriously as they do.
Vomiting and Difficulty Eating Could Signify Gastroparesis
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 71-year-old healthy, active woman. I normally work out six days a week and used to be in very good shape. I’m having stomach issues, which caused me to lose 20 pounds since the end of last year. I was thin to begin with and have lost a significant amount of muscle and most of my body fat. I was diagnosed with gastric intestinal metaplasia in 2019 and had trouble eating, but I didn’t lose any significant weight at that time. No treatment was recommended beyond a suggested follow-up in a year or two.
I have difficulty eating anything but a small amount of food, and if I do “overeat,” I vomit. Eating is beyond a chore, and I continue to lose weight. I have been worked up with no conclusions in sight. I had a colonoscopy two years ago that was normal. I had an abdominal CT scan with and without contrast, an endoscopy, an MR enterography, and a brain scan this year, with no results that explained my problem.
I am seeing another GI doctor soon, but I’m not particularly hopeful. I am 5 feet, 11 inches tall, and now weigh 129 pounds. I am feeling desperate. Do you have any ideas? -- L.W.
ANSWER: Weight loss can have many different causes, and it seems like your doctors have carefully looked for many of the concerning ones. Key features of your story are that you are vomiting and losing weight.
Intestinal metaplasia is when the lining of the stomach develops a microscopic appearance, similar to the intestines. This can predispose people to stomach cancer, but intestinal metaplasia can also be associated with low acid in the stomach.
Vomiting after eating normal amounts of food is a concern for a stomach mass, but between the endoscopy and the CT scan, it should have shown up. I would be concerned about gastroparesis, where the stomach doesn’t squeeze properly. Vomiting after eating is a hallmark symptom, as is feeling very full after a little food. A gastric emptying study can confirm the diagnosis.
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu.

What to do when your pet won’t housetrain
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I adopted a 9-month-old puppy a few weeks ago and named him “Chestnut.” He’s wonderful, but has one problem. He is still not housetrained. I think part of it is from the shelter, where the dogs routinely poop in their cages and rarely are taken outside. Plus, he was rescued from a pet hoarding situation. How can I resolve his housetraining issues? -- Glenda in Dothan, Alabama
DEAR GLENDA: Congratulations on your new family member! I know the housetraining situation is frustrating, but have patience.
If you haven’t taken Chestnut to the veterinarian yet for his first checkup, schedule that appointment. e vet will rule out any physical problems or hidden illnesses that might be contributing to the problem, and can give some helpful advice on working with dogs from a traumatic background. at background does have an effect on housetraining. Chestnut spent formative months in locations where little to no training took place, and he learned to follow the habits of the other dogs around him. So, you’ll have to retrain him away from those habits, and keep the entire experience a positive one.
Send us a photo and a brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Submit online at gvpennysaver.com - Share With Us. Or, Mail to: PO Box 340, Avon, NY 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS.
Take Chestnut for walks two to three times per day, and (this is important) at the same times each day. He needs to know that at sunrise, noon and sunset, he will have “outside” time. Bring his favorite treats with you. At first, shower him with treats for everything: putting on the leash, walking next to you, sitting on command, and every time he poops or pees. Make him look forward to pooping outside.
Never scold him if he poops inside. Just clean up and try again. If he poops in specific areas of the house, block his access to those areas if possible. Keep training positive and be patient, patient, patient. He will come around.

* On Sept. 2, 1666, the Great Fire of London breaks out in the house of King Charles II’s baker near London Bridge. When the Great Fire finally was extinguished on Sept. 6, more than 80% of London was destroyed and 100,000 people were left homeless.

The armed Arkansas militia troops surrounded the school while an angry crowd of some 400 whites jeered, booed and threatened to lynch the frightened teenagers.
* On Sept. 5, 1969, Lt. William Calley is charged with premeditated murder in the deaths of 109 Vietnamese civilians at My Lai in March 1968. Redefine A Space With An Interior Decorator
Interior decorators work with people of all budgets. Homeowners sometimes wrestle with the practicality of hiring a decorator, wondering why they should spend the money when they can do the work themselves. But hiring a professional interior decorator can ensure the job is done right, within budget and completed within a reasonable amount of time.
Homeowners often have no idea where to begin when attempting to establish flow from room to room in their homes. Decorators can help homeowners tailor the interiors of their homes to produce the desired vibe.
Hiring a designer can help a person avoid making potentially costly design errors. An aesthetically appealing house also can increase the home’s value, setting a property above others in terms of appeal. Even though the designer will charge a fee, the investment may be well worth the expense when the room is done right the first time.
Interior decorators have numerous resources at their disposal. Fine tuned to the world of design, they understand which trends will come and go and also which design ideas have staying power. In addition, decorators will be in touch with vendors in the industry, connecting homeowners with the best of the best.
In addition to expertise and resources, interior decorators have eyes that will be trained on things homeowners may not have noticed or even realized can be done. A designer may envision removing a room to create more space or knocking a wall down to let more natural light into a room.

Reading: Parents may be surprised by how much their children enjoy a good book. A recent poll from the National Education Association found that 70 percent of middle school students read more than 10 books a year. The National Literacy Trust reports that roughly 45 percent of children between the ages of eight and 11 enjoy reading “very much.” When suggesting to children that they read more this summer, parents can note the many ways that reading for pleasure differs from reading for school. Point out that kids won’t have to submit book reports and emphasize that they can choose their own books. Depending on children’s ages, introduce kids to a series like “Harry Potter,” which is a set of seven fantasy novels that has helped millions of young people across the globe discover and develop a fondness for reading. Weekly visits to the library, where kids can pick from hundreds of books, can get youngsters even more excited about reading.

The word “condiment” comes from the Latin word “condimentum”, meaning spice, seasoning or sauce, and “condire”, which means to preserve, pickle or season. Although the word was first used to describe pickling fluid and seasoning in the mid-1400s, it has come to include a wide range of different products in modern times.
Why are condiments such a common feature on dining tables? Condiments are known to be a typical compliment to food because of their ability to personalize and add taste or flavor to different dishes as desired. Condiments also offer a whole sensory experience through smell, sight, sound, and touch, making dishes much more attractive.
Tom Feigel Recounts Vietnam War Memories in Super Slick: Life and Death in a Huey in Vietnam
BY SUZIE WELLS
Tom Feigel, a 74-year-old Vietnam War veteran from Webster, shares his experiences as Crew Chief of the Super Slick with the336thAssaultHelicopterCompanyinSocTrang,Vietnam, in his newly released book, Super Slick: Life and Death in a Huey in Vietnam
e UH-1 Huey helicopter, an iconic symbol of the Vietnam War, was at the heart of Feigel’s service. Utilized for everything from transporting troops and supplies to engaging in direct combat as gunships, Hueys became synonymous with the war’s helicopter warfare. e 336th operated in southern Vietnam’s Mekong Delta and U Minh Forest, carrying out crucial missions including combat assaults, troop insertions, extractions, and support for Seal Team 1 during Operation Bright Light.
Feigel’sjourneybeganwithBasicTrainingatFortDix,NewJersey, followed by a helicopter repairman course at Fort Eustis, Virginia. He was initially assigned to hangar crew duties but quickly found himself intheairasadoorgunnerbeforeadvancingtotheroleofCrewChief. Inthisposition,Feigelwasresponsibleforthemaintenanceandsafety of his helicopter, Warrior 21, tail number 16109, and the lives of the crew onboard.
e bond between Feigel and his crew was forged in the crucible of war. “Every hour in flight, I worried if I did everything right, because their lives were in my hands,” Feigel recalls. is tight-knit team included Feigel, Randy Olson, Rob Sandwith, and Tom Wilkes, each relying on the other to survive the relentless dangers of the battlefield. Sandwith said, “Tom was like a big brother to me and took me under his wing.” e team forged incredible bonds and rose to each mission together.
In 1970, following the explosion of a fellow 336th slick, Lucky Strike, Feigel’s team was tasked with converting Warrior 21 into a night-flying aircra equipped with advanced systems like Nighthawk and Firefly. ese modifications allowed the crew to patrol waterways, engage enemy forces, and carry out missions under the cover of darkness, despite the constant threat of ground fire.
e 336th Super Slick unit was disbanded later that year, and the men went their separate ways. When Vietnam Veteran and author, John Brennan, researched the 16109 for its nose art and discovered that tail number at a Bridgeport, West Virginia war memorial, Feigel
and the crew reunited. e reunion was an emotional experience for all involved, with Feigel reflecting on the bond they had shared. “It’s the brother you knew forty years ago. A lot of thoughts come back from that time of us together,” he says.
Wilkes says, “To know the Super Slick is still alive in a place of honor is like a dream.” Feigel says, “It’s earned that spot. We flew in that helicopter every single night... ere’s an everlasting bond between crew chief and a helicopter.”
Feigel’s book, written with ghostwriter Larry Weill, recounts many vital missions from his Vietnam experience. A er working in Xerox middle management for 40 years, Feigel felt compelled to document his wartime experiences. “My one and only personal goal, very simple, is to walk into a bookstore and pull MY BOOK from the shelf,” he says.
Super Slick: Life and Death in a Huey in Vietnam not only serves as a memoir of Feigel’s time in the war but also as a tribute to the enduring bond between the men who served alongside him. All royalties from the book will be donated to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, a cause close to Feigel’s heart.
Tom Feigel and Larry Weill will sign copies of the book on Saturday, August 31st, at the Eastview Mall Barnes & Noble from 1-3 pm.
