Cooling systems work hard to keep the flow of air to the engine and prevent it from overheating during warm seasons. Compromised cooling fans or lack of coolant can be troublesome. To avoid overheating, check coolant levels before getting on the road. In addition, have the cooling system checked by a trained mechanic prior to the summer driving season. It’s a small price to pay to avoid extensive engine damage from overheating.

STAY SAFE WHEN GARDENING IN HOT WEATHER Gardening is widely considered as relaxing a hobby as it is rewarding. Although gardening when temperatures are mild, such as in spring and fall, can be relaxing, gardening can be much more physically taxing and even dangerous when temperatures rise during the dog days of summer. Gardens need tending even when temperatures outside are especially hot, so gardeners must take steps to protect their health when working in their gardens during the summer.

WAYS TO SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES
Are Dog Treats Bad for Fido's Health?
Shop at small businesses regularly.
NOW HERE’S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Coffee filters make wonderful glass cleaners. They leave behind no streaks and no residual lint. * Berries are in season, and there’s no greater time to stock up. But don’t feel like you have to make jam out of all the berries. Freeze in a single layer and transfer to a freezer-safe bag or container. Later they can be popped into muffins and quick breads, as well as eaten straight out of the bag for a delicious treat. * “Do you love burgers? Here’s a great thing our family does that saves money and is very handy: When ground beef goes on sale, we buy a large quantity and premake many burger patties, seasoned and shaped just as we like them. Then we separate them with butcher’s paper cut into squares. We put them in stacks, and then into empty bread bags to store in the freezer. When we are getting ready to cook out, the patties don’t have to be all the way defrosted, just put on the grill and cooked up!” -- A.J. in Florida * Okra, which is at its peak July through September, makes an excellent stew thickener. But it’s quite yummy on the grill as well, brushed with olive oil and lightly seasoned. Just be sure you don’t wash it until you are ready to use it. There’s a natural protective coating on it, and if you wash it off, it’ll get slimy. * Old socks can be fitted around the head of an old mop or Swiffer base. Spray with cleaner and clean away. When you are done, remove the sock and launder. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I use dog treats to train my 18-month-old puppy, "Jif." At the dog park, an owner said that using treats is bad and that Jif will eventually get fat. That's hard to believe, as he is really energetic. He only responds when he knows there is a treat after each command. What do you say? -- Lee in Alexandria, Virginia DEAR LEE: Ah, to treat or not to treat! That's a big issue for many pet owners. Ultimately, you are in charge of Jif 's training and health. Unsolicited advice from other dog owners is only a little helpful, at best. I've interviewed and observed champion breeders and trainers, and one thing I've noted over the years is that some dogs get a treat at every turn, for seemingly every move they make. Other dogs do fine with a treat at the end of their routine. And backstage, when show dogs are being groomed, primped and prepped? They're getting treat after treat. These are champion dogs in top shape. Things to note with using treats: * Treats help build a positive association with specific commands or actions. * The pros use treats that are as healthy as possible: no byproducts, no preservatives. They're often homemade. * Treats are cut into very small pieces. They can be given more frequently without adding too many calories. * Dog treats don't replace meals. Make sure your puppy is fed on time each day with the recommended amount of food for his age and weight. It's possible to replace some of Jif 's treats with other positive associations. Praise, attention, a favorite toy -- things that bring him joy. Build that anticipation of reward in different ways. Check out a few training books, or work with a dog trainer on new ways to reward Jif.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Save Money With Phone Plans, Price Matching With the price of everything going up, we need to save our dollars every place we can. Here are two ideas: PHONE PLANS -- If you want to save money on your cellphone plan or the cost of a new phone, there are a dozen or so providers that offer reduced-rate plans for seniors. Some offer a new phone, some will let you use your existing phone and many will let you keep your current phone number. Most offer unlimited talk and text, but prices will vary based on download speeds and data caps. Most also don’t require a contract, but if part of the deal is to buy a new phone from them, you might run into a penalty if you cancel before the phone is paid for. Call around to the phone service providers in your area and ask about senior plans. Be sure to look at their websites to check out the phones. You might need larger buttons or other special features. Better yet, if they have a store near you, go look at the phones in person. Don’t let yourself be talked into a long contract that you don’t want. PRICE MATCHING -- This is a good way to get deals on things you want if you hunt for bargains. Some stores make it their policy to match lower prices found elsewhere. You’ll need to have proof, however, meaning they’ll need to see the current price on the competitor’s website. Your best bet is to call and ask whether they’ll look online right from their store, or if it’s enough for you to print out the competitor’s online ad. It’s mostly the bigger chains that have these policies, but even a local store might be willing to price match just to get your business. Remember to ask for your senior discount everywhere you go! Studies Don’t Support CDB Oil for Depression ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: My son is taking hemp-based CBD oil for depression. He purchased this at a health food store. His doctor prescribed pills that he was unable to tolerate due to suicidal thoughts. He is unable to go outside when taking CBD. We would like to know if it will show up in a drug test as part of a job interview. Should he be taking it? -- D. ANSWER: There are animal studies and some preliminary data suggesting that cannabidiol, a nonpsychoactive substance found in cannabis, might be effective for anxiety and depressive disorders. I hope that CBD will be proven to be a useful treatment for depression, as what we have now certainly isn’t perfect. However, there are not yet high-quality studies supporting this use. The fact that your son can’t go out while taking the CBD suggests to me that it may not be effective. While the pills he had previously cannot be used, there are many treatments available for depression that have better safety and effectiveness data than CBD. Most forensic drug testing uses THC and its metabolites, so if what your son is taking is truly CBD, then it should not be identified during testing as THC. There is a chance that the “CBD oil” he purchased has THC in it: In one study, 57% of CBD oils sold were found to have measurable THC, which would show up on a drug test. Unfortunately, 25% of the oils contained no CBD at all. I remain convinced that these drugs, THC and CBD, need to be properly studied, and when found to be useful, tested for purity and content in the same way as pharmaceuticals. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2021 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

S E V RA Sending our thanks The Teresa House Board of Directors, Staff and Volunteers would like to send many thanks to all of our 2021 United Way and SEFA donors. We are constantly amazed by the generosity of our community! Your donations are used in the day-to-day operations of caring for the terminally ill and their families. It is only through your generosity that the ministry of Teresa House can continue. Special thanks to the many donors who contribute every year. We are blessed to live in such a caring community. A friend during the storm I would like to thank Amy Catto for all her support when I was going through a tough time with my husband. I met her when I was going for a walk in the park. She noticed I was sad and asked me what was wrong. I told her about my situation, and she comforted me. She and I met every day after that, and we drank coffee and chatted. I am not having problems with my husband anymore! She gave me more support than a marriage counselor would, and she did it for nothing! I hope to help you and your family in the future, Amy! Brockport Labs are the best! On Tuesday, August 3rd, I went to the lab to get blood drawn and another test as well. What a job to have, but at Brockport lab the phlebotomists always do an excellent job. I have bad veins, as well as being “chicken little” when it comes to getting blood drawn, so they have to be extra attentive so that I don’t turn green. Yes, I was told one time (another lab) that I actually turned green when they had difficulty finding a good vein. So, a shout out to Cassandra Taylor who had to deal with me and my bad veins! Not only was she pleasant and made me feel comfortable, but she knew what she was doing. It was painless and quick. I didn’t even bruise, which is a telltale sign when someone doesn’t do their job correctly. Cassandra, I look forward to seeing you next time around, which will be about 3 months from now! Thank you for doing a job well done!
Fragrance chemicals Not many know this but manufacturers are not required to list their fragrance ingredients on product labels. Often only one word, “fragrance” is used on the label and can hide a cocktail of more than 100 toxic ingredients. This is because fragrances are considered to be “trade secrets.” The fragrance industry regulates itself, so that safety testing does not have to be confirmed by regulators before products are sold to consumers. Fragrance also contains phthalates, which are toxic. Fragrance is classified as allergens, hormone disruptors, asthma triggers, neurotoxins, and carcinogens. These chemicals can pass from your skin (from clothes) into your blood. You also breath them in. Many products sold are scent boosters which is a boost containing many of these toxins. It’s not real scent; it’s all chemicals. Please be careful to your health. Fragrances are in almost every product we use. Speaking truth I want to agree with the person who vented last week about the senior apartments in a local town. I have had bugs in my apartment for a few years now. My carpet is disgusting. I’m embarrassed when I have company come visit. If someone dies or moves, they might paint or put down another cheap carpet. There are a couple of buildings that have had no fire alarms for a month now. The owner has everyone over a barrel. They know we are senior and are on a fixed incomes, and now we got a notice that our rent is going up at least 35.00 starting next month and 3% every year after. But never has anything been said about routine maintenance and upkeep. [Local town] needs more senior apartments that are modestly priced. If anyone is in agreement, please let your voice be heard! Stuck in intersection The person complaining about the rude, impatient driver is a rude, inconsiderate driver. A driver is required to ensure they can make it through an intersection before entering. The person who got stuck is in the wrong. They should wait behind the stop line until the intersection clears before going through. If the light changes while they are waiting, they cannot just go through because they waited. The timing of the lights ensures that too many vehicles can’t go through an intersection so that the flow of traffic is as smooth as possible. People trying to beat the light to avoid being forced to wait another light cycle cause delays for everyone. So, stuck in the middle of the intersection is the rude inconsiderate driver here.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
Preheat the broiler. Arrange the bread slices on a rimmed baking sheet, slip under the broiler and toast, turning once, until golden brown on both sides. This should take only a few minutes. While the bread is toasting, halve the peaches lengthwise, pit them and then peel each half. Cut each half lengthwise into 1/4-inch-thick slices, keeping the shape of each half intact.

When the bread is ready, remove from the broiler and brush each slice on both sides with olive oil. Spread one-fourth of the cheese on each slice of warm bread, place a sliced peach half on top, and serve.

Born on October 17, 1925 in Hornell NY, Jerry was a graduate of Canisteo Central School. He then felt the duty to enlist in the US Navy. He was based at Sampson Naval Base in NY and was then deployed in WWII to Palermo Bay, Italy. Jerry served and survived the sinking of the USS Nauset, and was rescued by the USS Narragansett. He then went aboard the USS Agawam, (and was part of the original crew of the book/movie, Mr. Roberts.) He also served in the Korean War aboard the USS Sierra in Korea. After serving his beloved country, Jerry spent much of his time raising his boys, enjoying his family and home and working hard, before retiring in 1988 from the Local 85 Carpenters Union, which he was a proud member of. Jerry was also an avid sailor who loved to be on his sailboat with his family & friends. You could often find Jerry in his “workshop” or tending to his lawn or other projects he had started. He always had a welcoming smile to anyone who just happened to pop in. He was also known as quite the “jokester”, especially at the morning AND afternoon coffee hour downtown. He reveled in the heat of the day, never breaking a sweat, even at 90 degrees. He spent much of his retirement being a snowbird in Florida with family. He was a true lover of music and could be found listening to his beloved classical or the Mammas and the Pappas. He was what one would consider a “true gentleman,” patriot, confidant, Dad, Grampa, and friend - he will be sorely missed. At Jerry’s request no formal funeral services will be held. Jerry’s family will celebrate his life privately. Please have a toast in his honor and always remember him fondly. Memorial contributions can be made in his name to: The Honeoye-Hemlock American Legion Post 1278, West Lake Road, Honeoye, NY 14471, Gordy and Friends, PO Box 41, Honeoye, NY 14471 or Ontario - Yates Hospice, 756 Pre Emption Road, Geneva, NY 14456. by Kevin W. Dougherty and Michael P. Dougherty
SPOUSAL LOSS While the loss of a spouse can greatly impact the surviving partner, losing a lifetime companion can be devastating. Aside from overwhelming grief, surviving spouses’ lives may be complicated by their own ill health. With all this in mind, researchers have observed a “widowhood effect,” which refers to an increase in the chance of dying for the elderly after a spouse’s death in the first three months following the loss. At this point, it is crucial for family and friends to show their love and support in very practical ways, by offering to cook meals, buy groceries, clean, and provide transportation to doctor’s appointments. There is also a great deal to be said for simply spending time with grieving individuals. Because couples function as a team, the death of a spouse can present a complicated set of difficulties for the bereaved person. These issues go beyond having to handle their grief since the surviving spouse may need immediate help handling basic day-today responsibilities. As with any other death, it is important that you be patient, compassionate, and understanding when helping someone grieve the death of a spouse. To learn more about our funeral services, please call KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME at (585) 346-5401. Please tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. Rosita’s Way… A Sanctuary for Senior and Special Needs Chihuahuas BY SCOTT WURTZEL
T
here is a reason dogs are referred to as “man’s best friend.” They are loving and social animals that, if trained and well cared for, will always be by your side. Unfortunately, a lot of dogs end up being abused and/or abandoned by their owners, left with no place to go, but thatís where rescue shelters and sanctuaries come in. Bonnie Mason runs Rosita’s Way, a sanctuary for senior and special needs chihuahuas located in the Canadice/Hemlock area. After her chihuahua, Rosita, passed away, Bonnie started the sanctuary to rescue and care for other chihuahuas, making sure that they can live out their lives in peace. The sanctuary officially started in 2015.
One might wonder what a chihuahua sanctuary would be like. “Our tagline is Where love and acceptance heal,” Mason explains. “It’s a true sanctuary for senior and special needs chihuahuas to come and live their lives out, where they get proper medical care and love for whatever time they have. We do get some hospice cases, so sometimes it’s not too long. We are just the true meaning of the word sanctuary.” These dogs do face a lot of issues due to their breed. According to Mason, chihuahuas are the second most euthanized dog breed, right behind pit bulls. They are also the second most common dog breed found in shelters. “The biggest issue is that people use them as accessories,” Mason states. “Unfortunately, as we all know, when movies come out about different kinds of dogs, those dogs suffer because everyone then wants one. The biggest problem is more out west. California at one point was receiving chihuahuas in their shelters at a rate of 200 a day. Most of them the median age is 10, because once they become seniors, then it’s not so cute to carry them around anymore because they have their medical issues.” Also, due to the high demand, there is a lot of overbreeding, and this is the cause for an increase in chihuahuas with special needs. Old age and disabilities are the biggest reason why these chihuahuas have trouble finding homes. “The dogs we take in are deemed either unadoptable or difficult to adopt out,” Mason says. “We have only honestly had two unadoptable dogs, and they were unadoptable because they were liabilities. One was a bite risk to humans. You never knew what was going to set him off, and that’s a huge liability. You cannot adopt a dog out like that. The other one was super tiny but extremely dog aggressive and had gotten into fights in foster homes. She had basically worn out her welcome in the rescue she was in, so she came to us.” The dogs that are hard to adopt are usually ones with a lot of medical issues. Those types of dogs are ones that will sit in a small rescue for a long time.

Despite the many issues involved with these dogs, there are still ways for those who wish to help to get involved. To Mason, the best way to get involved is to volunteer at different rescues, even if they aren’t specifically for chihuahuas. “Volunteer for the things not everyone wants to do,” Mason explains. “A lot of fundraising happens at yard sales; I can’t for the life of me to get anyone to volunteer to help with a yard sale. It’s the harder things that everybody needs more help with, it’s the get-yourhands-dirty, do-some-work things.” Mason also says that there are plenty of people willing to come play with the dogs, and that helps, but “there needs to be hands-on in the other areas, too. There is a lot to what we do.” If you can’t find the time to help out with a handson approach, you can donate to one of many dog rescue charities. Mason says that you just need to do your research, and in terms of local charities, she has “worked handin-hand with Suzy Q Dog Rescue.” She worked with them to foster a dog, but the dog remains in their care. Mason has also worked with out-of-state organizations such as Long Way Home Adoptables out of Texas and Pink Heart Rescue in Indianapolis. Enjoy this article? THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT RETURNING TO SCHOOL Adults who decide to return to school after a long layoff are following a popular path. According to the education resource Education Corner, a growing number of career colleges and vocational training schools now offer bachelor’s and graduate degree programs geared toward working adults. People return to school for various reasons, including the chance to learn new skills or further develop their existing skills. Some return to school because they are changing careers, while others may have lost a job or desire a promotion and feel that attaining a higher level of education or new skills can make reaching that goal more likely. Adults who hope to return to school might be surprised to learn that the educational landscape has changed considerably since they were last in a classroom. EMPLOYMENT
