Leaves cascading down from trees indicate the arrival of autumn. However, colorful and awe-inspiring autumn leaves can be a hazard if left to lie on the ground too long.

Fallen leaves form a dense insulator to protect trees’ roots and prevent competing plants from growing. Decomposing leaves also provide nutrients for the tree. But wet leaves can be a safety hazard and leaves left on the lawn through the winter can pose a threat to the grass. These are just a couple of reasons why so much effort is placed on leaf clean-up in the fall.

HOW STUDENTS CAN HANDLE THE TRANSITION TO MIDDLE SCHOOL

Talk about any other fears. Engage in an open dialogue with your son or daughter about any additional fears he or she may have. If students are worried about academics, spend some time over the summer going over the curriculum. If the potential for peer pressure is a cause for concern, reinforce advice on how to react to peer pressure.

Gospel Corner

‘If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John: 8-9 Blaming others seems to be the order of the day. Children, husbands, wives, politicians, criminals, all try to blame others. True it is that our first parents started it, Adam blamed Eve and God, Eve blamed the Devil. Few rarely admit and confess that they are to blame. The manager of a baseball team was disgusted by the outfielder’s play. He himself went out to show him! After a bad hop of the ball taking out a tooth, the next drop was the sun in his eyes. He returned saying, ‘’You Idiot, you messed up the field so bad I can’t do a thing with it.’’ (See 1st verse)

We’re hosting the Independent Baptist Fellowship on 9/18 from 7-9pm, and 9/19 from 9am-noon. Preachers will be there from around the area.

PREPARE YOUR LAWN & GARDEN FOR WINTER

Apply a winterizing fertilizer. Winterizing fertilizers can help lawns store food they need to survive through winter and also can help them bounce back strong in spring. Such fertilizers are typically formulated for coolseason grasses such as fescue and bluegrass and are often best applied after the final cut of fall. Warm-season grasses go dormant in winter, so homeowners whose lawns contain these types of grasses won’t want to apply a winterizing fertilizer. Homeowners who don’t know which type of grass they have or are concerned about when to apply a winterizing fertilizer should consult with a lawncare professional before fertilizing.

Does Your Family Have a Fire Escape Plan? (Family Features) When a home fire occurs, you have very little time to get out. A working smoke alarm doubles your chances of survival, yet more than twenty percent of American homes are without them. Energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs teamed up to address this problem by providing vital fire safety information to families.

Make a Plan Installing smoke alarms on every level of the home and developing a plan of escape can give your family precious minutes to get out and get to safety. Draw a floor plan of your home and sketch exit routes out of every room. Make sure you have a fire escape ladder long enough to reach the ground from upstairs rooms. Assign an outside meeting place, so you can quickly locate each other

Bob Herson: Master of Flies and StreamsA Lifelong Journey in Fishing

For Bob Herson, fishing is more than just a hobby; it’s a way of life. He says he tries to fish just about every day of the year, and loves having Caledonia’s Spring Creek in his literal backyard. He passes on his knowledge and expertise to both novice anglers and seasoned fishermen.

Growing up as the only boy in a household with six sisters, Bob recognized the need for his own space and escape. He found that escape in fishing. His Long Island family was not interested in fishing, and his dad wasn’t really an outdoorsman. Bob’s Kindergarten teacher, however, piqued the boy’s interest when he read stories about fishing. Bob says he vividly remembers that day sitting on the rug around the teacher’s chair as he read the stories.

A sister took Bob fishing and his interest grew. By 12, his passion ignited, he had his first official lessons in the Catskills. With his first fly tying kit, Bob started tying flies for other people by the age of 14. He notes that he selected his college, the University of Oregon, based on its proximity to nearby streams. He jokes that he tied flies for beer money in college and has since found quite the side job in fly tying for individuals and wholesale business. Now, Bob ties flies 3-4 hours/day even with a full-time job as a family therapist working with high-risk families. He finds it and fishing to be quite therapeutic a er his workdays. He says “I have a crazy job where I see some really bad things, sad things, so fishing is the best way to clear my head. Being out in nature is great.”

Bob runs a retail business, selling a few flies at a time to individual customers, and a wholesale business, making and selling hundreds and thousands of flies for customers, including for Dette Flies shop in the Catskills, where Bob says he learned a lot from Mary Dette. He says, “there was maybe half a day three years ago I had no flies to tie.”

Bob also collects bamboo fly rods and fishing books, amassing probably a thousand books on the subject, he says. Bob’s fly patterns are featured heavily in Mike Valla’s 2023 book, Fly Fishing Guide to New York State.

Amidst his entrepreneurial endeavors and his dedication to the cra , Bob remains grounded in the camaraderie that fishing has afforded him. He cherishes the friendships forged through his artful fly creations, relishing the occasional solitary expedition or the company of a close confidante. Oatka Creek and Spring Brook hold a special place in his heart, though the latter languishes in disrepair, a fact that troubles Bob deeply. Once a thriving hub of angling activity, Spring Brook’s decline can be traced back to an avian incursion that decimated its fish population, resulting in a marked decline in angler visits. Bob advocates for the concerted efforts of the Caledonia and Mumford communities, urging them to focus on stream restoration, with dam removal as a pivotal step

Bob advises budding anglers to start with spin fishing to grasp essential techniques before delving into the complexities of fly fishing. Bob acknowledges the perceived elitism sometimes in the fly-fishing community and encourages a more accessible

Bob finds solace and clarity in the solitude of fishing. In a profession that o en exposes him to the depths of human struggles, the act of casting a line becomes a form of therapy. Nature, for Bob, is a healing force.

Bob says one of the most underrated places to fish is Genesee Country Village & Museum, where he says fishing is great in the springtime. “It’s gorgeous and worth it,” he says.

Bob is thankful for that pivotal day in Kindergarten when the teacher spun the fishing stories that ignited Bob’s passion. “If I didn’t experience that, I’d probably not be fishing,” he says.

On September 15, 2003, author and illustrator of children’s books, Peter H. Reynolds released his book “The Dot.” In the story, Vashti felt like she couldn’t draw — but her art teacher wouldn’t accept that. “Just make a mark, and see where it takes you,” the teacher said to Vashti. So, she marked her parchment paper with a small dot. The next day, Vashti was surprised to find her paper with the dot on the classroom wall.

Vashti was so proud of her work that she started creating drawings with different kinds of dots.

International Dot Day, September 15, is celebrated by adults and children for boosting courage so that their creative potential is released. It is a great day to connect and collaborate, and also to celebrate self-expression.

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE DRAFTING A LIVING WILL

Is cost preventing me from drafting a living will? Cost need not be a factor in setting up a living will. You can download a free template from any number of online legal sources. Local hospitals often have forms as well, which can be notarized for only a few dollars. These forms are generally comprehensive and can help you answer all the questions and write in specifics.

Here’s a tip

* “Just a er Labor Day, our family starts to think about who will host holiday dinners and such. We do it in a lottery. Whoever just hosted is exempt if they want to be. e rest of those who’d like to host a holiday event put their names in a pot, and we pick out names. e events are the usuals, like Christmas and anksgiving, but also a cookie-making party and the children’s party. It’s better than one person always having to do it or always getting to do it.” -- E.D. in Massachusetts

* If you are getting your outdoor furniture ready for storage, here’s a great cleaning idea. Load it all in the back of a truck, take it to a self-serve car wash and clean with the pressure hoses. Let dry, and it’s ready.

* “Dust books with a vacuum assist! I put the leg of a pantyhose over my vacuum wand and secure tightly. en I dust my bookshelves, holding the wand close by to suck up the dust that gets disturbed. It’s less messy, I think. I still dust from the top down.” -- L.K. in Ohio

How long do rabbits live?

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have a pet rabbit, Brownie, who is nearly 10 years old! He’s a Holland Lop, I think. He doesn’t do much at this age but sort of half-heartedly flop around his cage and the porch, then he settles onto the raised shelf in his cage and nibbles on carrots. He seems healthy, just slow. How much longer does he have le ? Do you think he’s lonely? -- Vicky R., Macon, Georgia

DEAR VICKY: First of all, wow! Ten years is quite a lifespan for a Holland Lop. It’s a testament to how well you care for him.

While the average lifespan of this rabbit breed is six to eight years, I have heard of H-Lops reaching 10, 12 or even 16 years of age! Care and comfort are really important for rabbits at any age. ey need a secure hutch, stable temperatures in summer and winter, fresh water always available, and good nutrition. ey also need things to gnaw on so their front teeth don’t grow too long, as well as plenty of fresh vegetables.

Introducing a new rabbit to the mix can be risky. ey might not take to each other, and fighting with another rabbit can cause stress, which can be deadly.

It sounds like Brownie is doing really well for his age. I recommend checking in with his vet if you notice any changes in his behavior or ability to get around. It sounds like you’re a little concerned that he isn’t moving around as much. Contacting the vet within 48 hours is a good rule for any changes in behavior, diet or activity for rabbits and other small pets.

Note Left on My Car

To whoever left a note on my car under the windshield wiper, you have done the right thing. You said, “I accidentally backed into your car. I’m so sorry. I checked everywhere on both cars and it appeared there was no damage.” and you left your phone number. Thank you! We need many more people like you in the world - people who are respectful of others’ property and take responsibility for their actions when they have an accident. You could’ve just as easily ran off, but you took responsibility for your error and did the right thing. By the way, I checked everything and there was no damage.

Thank you!

The Sunday before Labor Day, I had a fish dinner and coffee for lunch in the Canal View Restaurant in Newark. When I asked for my bill, I was told the couple at the table next to my booth had paid it. They had already left so I couldn’t thank them. Hopefully they will see this and know how much I appreciate it. Thank you so much! How thoughtful!

Youth Football

Hey youth football team. Want to know why your numbers are down? You might want to look internally at the coaches of these kids. They do not make it fun and they are obviously only coaching for their own kids. They are more concerned about statistics of YOUTH FOOTBALL players and making highlight films and posting these so -called stats on social media touting how great they are. What about the other players, the average players or the players who are on the fence about playing.? This is what youth football should be about, making a connection with ALL the players. Is the board really afraid of the coaches? Is this why they will not speak up? Bring back small town football......please!!

LEAF PEEPING PLANNING GUIDE

Pick your destination

Anywhere with deciduous trees provides the opportunity to witness blazing autumn color. During leaf-peeping season, travelers can go coast to coast and see awesome vistas. Some regions are particularly known for their leaf displays. New York’s Catskill and Adirondack regions are prime spots for visitors in the autumn. Those who live further north will find that leaves in Vermont are such an attraction that routes are published indicating where to enjoy the best views. Further south, Central and Eastern Virginia peak in late October. And don’t forget the shores of the Great Lakes, which are awash in reds, oranges and yellows by mid-September. The travel resource Frommer’s offers more leaf-peeping locales to visit.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

Suspecting and Diagnosing Hereditary Hemochromatosis

DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband was diagnosed with hemochromatosis 13 months before he died. I recommended that his blood relatives get tested so they can get treatment early, if necessary. Some doctors don’t know to check ferritin levels to make a diagnosis in a person with a family history of hemochromatosis. -- C.G.

ANSWER: Hereditary hemochromatosis (HHC) is a genetic disease of iron overload. In a person with HHC, the intestines absorb as much iron as they can all the time, even if the body doesn’t need it, whereas a person without HHC will simply stop absorbing iron if it isn’t necessary. The iron can go into and damage many organs, especially the liver, heart, bone marrow, hormone-producing glands and skin.

The diagnosis should be suspected in close relatives of an affected person. Although checking ferritin levels is useful in making the diagnosis, iron tests, total iron-binding capacity tests and hemoglobin tests should also be ordered. If the family member has a recognized genetic mutation, such as C282Y homozygote or C282Y/H63D compound heterozygote, those genetic tests may also be useful in making the diagnosis. The diagnosis should even be suspected in people with vague symptoms, such as weakness and fatigue. I teach my students and residents to consider the possibility of iron overload, as it is common, easily tested for, and easily treated with phlebotomy (blood removal). Symptomatic HHC is more common at an earlier age in men than women, but it still should be considered in younger women.

A clinician should also consider iron overload in people with enlarged livers or abnormal liver enzymes, diabetes, changes in skin tone (bronze or gray), heart failure and some kinds of arthritis. Most people with these conditions do not have HHC, but initial testing is cheap and easy.

Treatment can be done by donating blood. My first patient with HHC donated over 100 units of blood before his blood levels came down to the target range. ***

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2023 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

HOBBIES THAT SUIT A SUMMERTIME VIBE

Gardening: Gardening is another hobby that coordinates well with a summertime vibe. Gardening gets people outdoors, giving them a chance to soak up some summer sun and engage in an activity that’s rewarding but not too physically demanding. One of the biggest attractions of gardening is that it can be enjoyed by people of all ages. That makes it an ideal hobby for busy families to enjoy together when their schedules slow down in the summer. It’s also a great way for adults to spend quality time with aging parents.

HOW ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGIES ARE HELPING THE DEAF

Cochlear implants The NDC notes that cochlear implants are electronic devices that are surgically implanted under the skin behind the ear. Cochlear implants utilize electrodes placed in the cochlea, or inner ear, to stimulate the auditory nerve of individuals who have substantial and permanent hearing loss.

The NDC reports that cochlear implants are not necessarily ideal for everyone with significant hearing loss. That’s because no two brains are the same, and it’s difficult to predict how well a given person’s brain will interpret the new auditory signals the implant is sending. In addition, the NDC notes that certain types of hearing loss cannot be remedied with cochlear implants.
