It's essential that hunters exercise caution with their rearms at all times. Firearms should always be considered loaded, even when they're not. is approach should apply while hunting and while at home. Maintaining such a mindset can help hunters avoid dangerous, potentially deadly mishaps should they mistakenly believe a rearm is not loaded when it is.

When hunting, only point the rearm when you plan to shoot, making sure to keep your nger o the trigger until you're ready to shoot. Only shoot when a target is clearly identiable and you're certain about what is beyond the target.
Hunters, especially those who plan to go it alone, should always let others know of their plans before going on a hunting excursion. Sharing plans can help rescue teams nd you should you su er an injury on your trip and prove incapable of returning to your campsite or vehicle without assistance. Let others know when you plan to return and indicate your plans to call or text them when you arrive back at your vehicle. is way they can promptly alert the appropriate authorities should you not contact them on time.

Grill wisely. Millions of people anxiously await the return of warm weather so they can once again fire up their backyard grills. Various studies have suggested there’s a link between well-done grilled meat and cancer. One study conducted by researchers at Vanderbilt University found that high intake of well-done meat increases exposure to heterocyclic amines (HCAs), a type of carcinogen that forms in cooked red meat. That doesn’t mean individuals should put away their grills, but a change in grilling habits could help lower cancer risk. For example, one study from researchers at Kansas State University found that adding antioxidant-rich spices such as rosemary and thyme to marinade and soaking meat for at least an hour before cooking can reduce HCAs by as much as 87 percent.
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 55-year-old male in good health and was diagnosed with a slightly enlarged prostate several years ago. My primary care doctor said he wasn’t concerned enough to prescribe any medications. I get an annual physical, and there haven’t been any changes. However, in the past couple of years, there have been times when, once I get the urge to urinate, I’ve got to get to a restroom posthaste. But, it’s comical at times! Once, I was halfway through a three-hour road trip and started thinking I should stop. I made it all the way home without a problem, but couldn’t make it from my driveway to the restroom. I read up on Flomax, which appears to work for those who have trouble urinating. Are you aware of any over-thecounter medications for my situation? -- R.J.

One way to assess severity of prostate symptoms is using the AUA score, available at tinyurl.com/ BPHscore. Men who have a result of moderate or severe symptoms benefit from treatment.

There are several herbal treatments (such as saw palmetto, South African star grass, stinging nettle and Africatn plum) for an enlarged prostate with recurring symptoms. Some of my patients take them and feel like they are effective, but the evidence is not definitive. Supplements are not subject to the same standards of purity that prescription medications are. Consequently, I do not recommend these treatments. Tamsulosin (Flomax) and similar drugs are safe and well-tolerated for most men.

I’ll refer to the late Peter Gurney’s brilliant Guinea Pig Health Guide. One suggestion, which you may be able to apply to your surviving guinea pigs, is to have the vet listen to their heartbeat. A heart murmur can indicate valve problems. Another possibility is an undetected fungal or bacterial infection that got into Dale’s system, eventually causing a heart attack. But as you pointed out, he showed no external signs of illness.Forthis mystery, I’ll turn to my readers. Any suggestions for Julie on monitoring her two surviving cavies?Sendyour tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner. (c)com.2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My male guinea pig, Dale, was always healthy. He was fat and not losing weight. One day, we cleaned his cage and noticed that he was sticking his head out repeatedly and opening his mouth -- like yawning. e vet said to come in right away, and within ve minutes of hanging up, Dale was dead. e vet looked at him and said he looked healthy and that maybe he had a heart attack or stroke, but I didn’t see any symptoms. Any help would be great, because we have two others. -- Julie G., via e-mail

DEAR JULIE: Sadly, it o en can be di cult to tell when a guinea pig is getting ill. ey’re very good at hiding signs of illness, and often they are acutely ill before their owners can tell what’s wrong. It’s clear that you pay close attention to your guinea pigs, as you were aware of Dale’s weight and normal behavior. However, guinea pigs can become ill very quickly. You were right to contact the veterinarian immediately a er noticing Dale’s strange behavior, which I agree, could have been a sign of a stroke or heart attack.

I learned of a neighborhood group, six seniors, who are trying to keep themselves fed against all odds. ey’ve come up with a brilliant plan: At the end of each week they pool whatever foods they have le over and have dinner together. ey split the le overs to take home.
Meals When the Larder Is Empty
This
(c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.
I tried it out, clicking that I have butter, milk, onion, ground beef and rice. e result came back that I could make a potential 521 recipes. Some of them actually sounded pretty good. When I swapped the ground beef for bacon, it was even better. A little suggestion note at the top of the screen said that if I had certain other ingredients on hand, I could nd an additional 51 recipes.
SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles
Once I found those two sites I went on a hunt for more and found a public library database titled “Finding Recipes for Ingredients You Already Have.” You can check it out at www.penningtonlibrary.org/ nding-recipes-for-ingredients-you-already-have.Maybeyoudon’tneedanothertripto the grocery store, at least not yet. Maybe you have on hand what you need to make a meal once you nd a creative recipe.
e woman who told me about this talked about a website she discovered where all manner of ingredients could be entered, with the machine scouting the internet for recipes that could be created using those ingredients.Whoever created the SuperCook website (www.supercook.com) did a fantastic job. Meats, grains, fruits, vegetables, dozens of cheeses, nuts, spices, dairy substitutes ... it’s all there, ready to be clicked. You only need to scroll down the le side and select the ingredients you have on hand.

CHOOSING AND APPLYING MULCH
Homeowners may associate mulch with springtime lawn and garden care, but mulching in fall can benefit a lawn as well. According to the Morton Arboretum in Illinois, mulch protects roots against extreme temperatures, and not just those associated with summer heat waves.
Mulch is often connected with its ability to help soil retain moisture during especially warm times of the year, when mulch promotes strong roots that can help lawns and plants survive periods of extreme heat. But when applied in the fall, mulch also inhibits freezing and thawing in winter, reducing the likelihood that plants will be injured.

Applying too much mulch can adversely affect lawns, plants and soil. In addition, excessive application can cause decay and make lawns and plants more vulnerable to disease. Recently, I was putting a melon in my car parked in the BJ’s parking lot. A boy grabbed my purse and ran. The woman parked next to me asked, “How can I help?” Then, she called the police. A woman parked across from me said, “I’ll follow him in my car.” When the thief ran into an overgrown area, she called her husband who was in line to get gas. He came and went into the bushes after the boy, retrieving my purse. These good Samaritans stayed with me until the police left, losing at least an hour of their day. The police were professional and equally concerned. I offered compensation to my good Samaritans, which they refused, saying they were glad they could help.

We would like to thank the person who found and turned in our black checkbook at the Wegmans in Geneseo. We accidentally left it in our cart outside of Wegmans. We had already left when we discovered our mistake. When we got there, the cart and the checkbook were gone. The checkbook had been turned in to Wegmans by a very kind person with the words, “Keep it safe.” This person has our heartfelt thanks and deepest gratitude. He or she has rekindled our faith in people. Thank you from a very grateful couple!
Thank you to the couple who offered to pay for my groceries when the Farmington Tops was unable to accept my Food Stamp card because of a system breakdown. While I was able to pay with my credit card, I can’t help but feel sorry for anyone who doesn’t have someone as gracious to offer such assistance nor any other way to pay for their groceries.
You have to wonder just how serious some folks are about "climate change" and the environment in general. I drove past a very popular coffee shop in [local town] and noticed a line of 9 cars waiting in the drive thru to purchase rather costly coffee or items. How do they think sitting in their cars with engines running and spewing pollution of $5.00 per gallon gas is going to save the world for climate change?

Flags are flown for many reasons. They show all who drive by our homes what we believe in; what we feel; what we enjoy and, more recently, what we hate. The flags that used to adorn our neighborhoods have quickly changed from inviting to dividing. This is all well and good; as freedom is what the most important of all the flags stands for: the American Flag. For anyone who flies flags, remember that the American Flag is to be respected. Rules have been laid out in the United States Flag Code. One of the most important rules being this: "No other flag or pennant should be placed above or, if on the same level, to the right of the flag of the United States of America.” This rule in particular seems to have been forgotten by some. If flags of hatred & vulgarity are that important to you, go on and fly them. Just be mindful of their placement on your flagpole.

The size of the area you want to level will determine the tools you need. For a small area, you can use a shovel to move soil from the higher to lower area, then smooth it out with a garden rake. Larger areas can require use of earthmoving equipment sized to the scale of your project. A rototiller may be a good tool to start with at any size. You should also consider
equipment like a tamper to pack a firm bed for stability of the stone, a fabric soil cover to prevent unwanted vegetation growth and the use of sand as a bedding layer. Stakes and string lines are useful to help determine the consistency of your leveling.

Today’s auto manufacturers understand that maximized cargo space is a feature many buyers want in their new vehicles. But even the most spacious car or SUV may not always provide the right amount of space drivers need to haul large items. In such instances, roof racks are an asset, especially to avid travelers or outdoor enthusiasts.
By boosting a vehicle’s storage space, roof racks essentially transform the top of a car or truck into a second trunk.Moving items up and outside of the car can free up additional legroom and give passengers greater comfort on longer trips. Plus, roof racks provide a sturdysurface on which to store kayaks, mountain bikes, furniture, surfboards, and morewithout damaging the paint and finish of the vehicle.

According to Mental Health America, individuals’ reactions to the death of a loved one can elicit unique emotions linked to their relationship to the deceased. For example, MHA, a community-based nonprofit focused on promoting mental health, notes that a child’s death could inspire different feelings than the loss of an elderly spouse. When parents lose a child, that death may arouse a sense of injustice that can overwhelm the child’s parents as they contemplate lost potential, unfulfilled dreams and, in certain instances, the child’s suffering. Elderly individuals who lose a spouse may be overcome by feelings of loneliness. Recognition of these different reactions is important because it can help individuals and their support networks more effectively cope with their grief.

My name is Bailey. I’m 9 years old and am a husky/pit mix. My eyes are my best feature as one is blue and one is half blue and half brown. I have taken over the recliner chair in our family room as my own. The only time I have to share is when the grandkids come to visit.
Many dog owners, particularly those who have never before had a dog, may hesitate to employ crates to train their puppies. That’s understandable, as on the surface it can seem cruel or inhumane to confine a living animal to a cage. However, the AKC notes that dogs are den animals that naturally seek out canine caves for security. That’s true whether dog owners provide crates for their puppies or not. So while humans may see crates as cruel, dogs very likely view their crates as secure places where they can go if they get scared or feel skittish. In fact, according to the AKC, dogs’ perception of crates is one reason why dog owners typically find it relatively easy to get their dogs to adjust to crates and ultimately enjoy them. - 8am-6pm

Turn computers off at quitting time. Frequently turning computers on and off can produce small surges of energy each time the computer is turned on. But the United States Department of Energy notes that this energy surge pales in comparison to the energy consumed when computers are left on for long periods of time. When going home for the day or leaving your desk for more than 20 minutes, whether it’s during lunch hour or to attend a meeting, turn your monitor off. If you expect to be away from your computer for more than two hours, turn both the computer and the monitor off. Employers who make these suggestions to their employees may reduce their office energy consumption and save money along the way.
Full-time, Monday-Friday. Pressroom or bindery experience helpful, but we’ll train the right person. Ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, motivated and want to be recognized for a job well done. Wage dependent upon experience.

* Make your own bed buddy hot pad with a long sock and rice. Use a sock that’s knee high, and fill it about two-thirds with plain, uncooked white rice. Knot it an inch or two from the top of the rice, so it’s nice and loose. Once it’s secure, you can stick the sock into the microwave for 1-2 minutes. The rice heats up and the heat is stored in the rice. It’s wonderful for aches and pains -- or just for keeping toes toasty!
* “When I was a kid, the side of my yard was soft sand, but it’s where my brother and I kept our bikes. I liked my bike to stand up, because it kept the sand out of my gears. The kick stand was sinking in the sand, and my dad gave me an old tennis ball that he had poked a hole into. I put it on the kick stand, and from then on, it stayed standing up. Thought I would share.”

* Shower caps can be placed over a planter and used to make a kind of greenhouse for planting cuttings. Just water and place it in a sunfilled window. Be sure to check it often, because even though it may be moderate or even cool out, your little greenhouse can get pretty hot with only a few hours of sun.
