CHOOSING AND APPLYING MULCH Homeowners may associate mulch with springtime lawn and garden care, but mulching in fall can benefit a lawn as well. According to the Morton Arboretum in Illinois, mulch protects roots against extreme temperatures, and not just those associated with summer heat waves.
Contact/Visit us on Facebook Sam Da Servic!
Mulch is often connected with its ability to help soil retain moisture during especially warm times of the year, when mulch promotes strong roots that can help lawns and plants survive periods of extreme heat. But when applied in the fall, mulch also inhibits freezing and thawing in winter, reducing the likelihood that plants will be injured.

FALL LAWN CARE TIPS Remove leaves as they fall. Much like apple-picking and foliage, raking leaves is synonymous with fall. Some homeowners may wait to pick up a rake until all of the trees on their properties are bare. However, allowing fallen leaves to sit on the ground for extended periods of time can have an adverse effect on grass. Leaves left to sit on the lawn may ultimately suffocate the grass by forming an impenetrable wall that deprives the lawn of sunlight and oxygen. The result is dead grass and possibly even fungal disease. Leaves may not need to be raked every day, but homeowners should periodically rake and remove leaves from their grass, even if there are plenty left to fall still hanging on the trees.

Instead of giving away unwanted items that have gathered dust around the house, many people turn to garage and yard sales to transform their clutter into some extra money. Yard sales may not be a “get rich quick” scheme, but they present an environmentally friendly way to clean up a home. What’s more, they can be an ideal way to connect with neighbors and meet new people. Any money earned is an added bonus. Statistics collecting resource Statistics Brain says that roughly 165,000 yard/garage sales take place in the United States each week. Nearly 700,000 people purchase something at those sales, leading to millions of dollars exchanging hands.

SENIOR NEWS By Matilda Charles Recreation Center Shuttered Again Well, that certainly didn’t last long. My town’s recreation center opened last week for indoor walking only -- no classes, no basketball, no anything else -- then shut down again just as quickly. It seemed like it would be safe: only a certain number allowed into the building at one time, no walking with a buddy, walking by yourself in one lane on the track, enter the building at your designated time and leave when your time is up. What could go wrong? What went wrong was the Mask Police. We’re supposed to be able to exercise without a mask. Except, cried the Mask Police, we would be exercising indoors. Indoors equals need for masks. I hear it was a very heated board meeting, with those on opposing sides quite vocal in presenting their cases. The anti-mask contingent was adamant that it was dangerous to ask us to mask up while exercising. The Mask Police insisted that COVID-positive people would be exhaling germs all over the rec center. They even brought charts and graphs. In the end, the rec center supervisor threw his hands in the air and declared the center closed for the foreseeable future. Meanwhile, there’s a bright spot on the horizon for this winter. The local senior center is once again hosting the Senior Health Fair. The purpose of the annual event is to link seniors with resources in the area. Companies and providers sign up to showcase their wares and offerings, including housing, products aimed at seniors, fitness, legal help, the fire department, senior-living retirement communities, the YMCA, medical services, athome nurse visits and much more. This year, however, like last year, it will all be online. Each exhibitor will have videos and “live” online events that seniors can “visit” via computer. There will be entertainment, but unfortunately, no snack tables.
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

HIKING: Hiking is a fun activity that can be enjoyed nearly year-round, but it’s especially enjoyable in the fall. That’s because few things in nature are as captivating as a park or forest w hen the fall foliage is in full bloom. Early fall also boasts ideal temperatures for hiking, as the mercury likely w on’t rise enough or sink low enough to produce the kind of extreme temperatures that can compromise a hiker’s afternoon. Instead, fall temperatures tend to be mild and comfortable, allow ing hikers to fully enjoy their often beautiful surroundings.

with bladder problems. I get up two or three times a night and usually make it to the bathroom. I thought it would be good to see a doctor in case the problem got worse. An operation was mentioned, which I am not interested in, so they gave me a pessary, which has been good and bad. It is comfortable and I don’t have to use the bathroom as often, but now I don’t get bathroom warnings and don’t always make it to the bathroom. I also leak urine with coughs and sneezes, which didn’t happen before. Now the doctor wants me to use Imvexxy inserts. After reading the side effects, I’m not sure that’s a good thing to do. What are your thoughts: Is the Imvexxy necessary? The side effects really scare me. -- Anon. ANSWER: You have symptoms of both urge incontinence (the sensation of needing to get to the bathroom right away to avoid an accident) and stress incontinence (losing urine with abdominal pressure, such as cough or sneeze). It is possible that you have two separate problems. However, loss of estrogen can cause the lining of the vagina and vulva to thin. This includes the urethra, which provides conscious control over urinary flow. It needs estrogen to close optimally, and older women often have stress or urge incontinence (or both, which is called mixed) due to lack of estrogen. Imvexxy (estradiol) is a low-dose estrogen preparation inserted in the vagina, usually daily for two weeks then twice weekly thereafter. It is a very reasonable choice for women with symptoms of urge or stress incontinence and who have findings of estrogen loss on physical exam. The low dose makes side effects uncommon (in the initial trial of 764 women, there were no adverse effects that happened in women using estradiol at greater frequency than in the placebo group). ***

LONG-DISTANCE CAREGIVING (NAPSI)—Chances are, at some point you will be a caregiver to a friend or family member. Providing care and support can be challenging in any circumstance, but caring for a loved one who lives far away presents a unique set of challenges. When providing care for loved ones who do not live nearby, keep the following three tips in mind.
$129
Plan ahead. Learn your loved one’s medical wishes, contact information for doctors as well as important financial and insurance information.

Area Agencies on Aging and other communitybased organizations can connect caregivers to programs that help with transportation, personal care services, nutrition, home modification and repairs, legal services, falls prevention programs and more.
• Free comprehensive exam • Free diagnostic set of x-rays with every new patient. • Teeth cleaning
Care for yourself. The Eldercare Locator can connect caregivers to local resources that can help, including caregiver support programs that can provide training, and support groups and other resources that help caregivers better support their loved ones—and themselves.

Covid 19 Safety Guidlines Followed Here!
The Eldercare Locator can help both care recipients and their longdistance caregivers. Through its website, www.eldercare.acl.gov, and national Call Center at (800) 677-1116, the Eldercare Locator connects long-distance caregivers to resources that can provide assistance where it is needed most—in the care recipient’s own community. The Eldercare Locator is funded by the U.S. Administration for Community Living and is administered by the National Association of Area Agencies on Aging.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Sept. 22, 1598, 26-year-old playwright Ben Jonson is indicted for manslaughter after a duel. He was very nearly hanged, but his ability to read and write saved him. He claimed “benefit of clergy,” which allowed him to be sentenced by the lenient ecclesiastical courts. PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Brewer’s Yeast and Pet Allergies DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I read an article that says brewer’s yeast is safe for cats and dogs. I disagree. I found several more articles online that say pets can be allergic to brewer’s yeast. What do you say about that? -- Carla L, via email DEAR CARLA: Pet owners should always research and evaluate the risks of any supplement for their pets. Brewer’s yeast is a mainstay for owners trying to find a natural flea control treatment, and others swear that its blend of B vitamins makes their pets healthier. It has been found that brewer’s yeast created for humans often contains ingredients like garlic and onions that are downright toxic to pets. Owners should purchase only brewer’s yeast formulated for dogs or cats, as PetMD notes (www.petmd. com/dog/nutrition/brewers-yeast-dogs-understanding-benefits-and-risks). Here are some other tips for picking the right brewer’s yeast: -- Give only the amount recommended for your pet’s size. -- Brewer’s yeast that has been “de-bittered” lacks chromium, a mineral that helps regulate blood sugar in humans but hasn’t been studied in dogs. -- Read the label carefully: Some brewer’s yeast for pets contains garlic, which can be toxic, especially for smaller pets. -- Consider a brewer’s yeast that includes omega-3 oils for added benefits. -- This supplement can add up to 80 calories to your pet’s meal. It can also cause excess gas. Some pets really are allergic to the yeast itself, though. Avoid giving brewer’s yeast to dogs with known yeast allergy, who have digestive illnesses like colitis, or who are immunocompromised. Always monitor your pet for new behaviors or symptoms after giving them any new supplement. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

FORTIS SCHOOL OF NURSING AT ALL-STATE CAREER SCHOOL LAUNCHES PRACTICAL NURSING PROGRAM Program Meets Underserved Nursing Need in Philadelphia Area (NAPSI)—By 2030, the baby boomer generation, totaling more than 2.1 million in Pennsylvania, will be over 65. Many will require medical care at nonhospital settings such as long-term care facilities and community health centers. Yet, our country’s ability to care for this population will be impacted by the dwindling number of nurses. In response, All-State Career School, a leading postsecondary institution in Essington, has launched a new Practical Nursing (PN) program to provide a pipeline of support to hospitals and other health care facilities in the South Philadelphia metropolitan area. “One of our goals for this new PN program is to increase the number of well-prepared, professional, caring nurses who can be employed in this community,” said Dr. Sheila Burke, Vice President of Nursing for Education Affiliates. The new Fortis School of Nursing at All-State Career School in Essington is the most recent offering in a network of schools managed by Education Affiliates, Inc., one of the largest nursing education providers in the U.S. The system currently educates over 4,000 nursing students nationwide and operates 29 nursing programs in 10 states.
DISCOUNTS AVAILABLE TO THE OVER 50 CROWD: Travel: Men and women over 50 may be able to save substantial amounts of money on travel simply by typing in their birthdays when purchasing tickets or planning trips. For example, men and women over the age of 62 are eligible to receive a 15 percent discount on the lowest available rail fare on most Amtrak trains.
“Southeast Pennsylvania is in dire need of nursing professionals and we’re excited to offer this new program to serve the community,” said Edward Rito, Area Campus President of All-State Career School in Essington. “We look forward to replicating the great success Fortis Institute’s practical nursing programs have experienced at its Scranton campus.” The Fortis School of Nursing at All-State Career School in Essington offers an accredited 60-week practical nursing program. The program was granted initial approval by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing. To learn more about preparing for a career in nursing, contact 610-3621124 for more information.

Perinton Historical Society’s House Tours are Back...Virtually! BY LUCY MCCORMICK, PERINTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY, HOUSE TOUR COMMITTEE REPRESENTATIVE
T
he Perinton Historical Society is creating a virtual house tour of six Perinton properties. The tour, a unique opportunity, will be available to its members for the month of October. Anyone is welcome to join the PHS for a nominal fee. Membership information can be found below or at Perintonhistoricalsociety.org or visit the Fairport Historical Museum at 18 Perrin St., Fairport, on Saturdays 9am-1pm, and on Sundays and Tuesdays, 2-4pm. The tour will feature six Perinton homes, mostly the exteriors, a few interior photos, and gardens. It is being filmed by a talented, creative, and energetic media professional, Noah Lucia, founder of Sidekick Films. Lucia captured the essence of these properties with a drone mounted video camera, added current and historic still photos, and synched narrated scripts with the visual component. He has created dramatic shots and highlights features that could easily be missed. Many surprises are in store: breathtaking views from a drone, showing a wide variety of angles and capturing lush grounds, a peek into one home that has been confirmed to be a local site of the Underground Railroad, and vibrant garden flowers so close you can almost smell them. In addition, viewers will learn many historical and quirky facts about the properties and the people who have called them home over the years. The homes are as diverse in their architecture as they are in their history. Virtual visitors will enjoy seeing an array of architectural styles, including Federal, Colonial Revival, Greek Revival, Italianate, a log cabin, and several types of barns. Visitors will also get a sense of the history of the properties. Each home has a story to tell. One home, at 185 North Main Street, was built by the founder of the DeLand Chemical Company, Daniel DeLand. The property once included livestock, a windmill, and a summer house. Another home at 425 Aldrich Road was built on a toll road that charged $.06 for a horse to pass through and $.25 for a stagecoach. Its address was originally at 7752 Pittsford-Palmyra Road. Two homes located very close together at 2187 and 2381 East Whitney Road were owned by the Talman family on a road once named Cheese Factory Road. The famous Talman Sweet apple was propagated in orchards on this land. Fairport’s farming roots are evident in several homes, including one on what was once named Baker Street, where an early inhabitant of the property owned the first threshing machine in the town and generously shared it with his neighbors. Baker Street eventually became Turk Hill Road, and this home is located at 1120. Finally, one of the homes, 344 Loud Road, is located on a street named for a man who built a log cabin for a home and used it as a tavern as well. Oliver Loud would relish seeing this contemporary log cabin home flanked by its numerous gardens.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * The first webcam was created to check a coffeepot! In 1993, researchers in the University of Cambridge’s computer science department really didn’t like getting up from their chairs to check the coffeepot just to find it empty, so they wired a system that would stream three images per minute from the Trojan Room, where the pot was kept, to the internal computer network. By the end of that year, the stream made it onto the new World Wide Web, endowing the Trojan Room coffeepot with international, if brief, fame.

Rock Complaint Really, complaining about painted rocks. What a privileged life you must lead if this is the major concern in your life. They are just painted rocks; move on.
S E V RA Finicky bird Several weeks ago, a little bird, a house wren, began building a nest in the Penny Saver delivery tube. She made a considerable pile of small twigs, filling the tube about 1/2 full. So, I contacted the carriers for the Genesee Valley Penny Saver, all of whom cooperated and used different delivery tubes. But after all the commotion, that little bird never laid a single egg! She had worked so hard, but it wasn’t a very good spot for a nest. Anyway, thanks to the various carriers! We all tried to help, but apparently the little wren didn’t like the location she chose after all. - Sincerely, a bird watcher Thank you, farmers! Thank you to Merrimac Farms, Livingston County Farm Bureau, and all the farmers & volunteers for the well organized Farm Fest on Saturday, September 11, 2021. It was a great family event, very educational & entertaining for all. We are very lucky to have so many devoted farm families in Livingston County. Thanks so much because without farmers we would be hungry & thirsty. May all your days be blessed & know you are appreciated. Thanks! Can’t thank you enough! The Elba Betterment Committee would like to thank everyone, not only in Elba, but also in our surrounding communities for the outpouring of support for our summer concert series - EBC Music and More 2.0. The musicians - who helped us navigate through the staging and presentation - were just phenomenal! The vendors - providing food and beverages with friendly and professional service; Christine White, for your patience and expertise with the advertising; GO Art! for the opportunity to present this amazing series to our community; and the Village of Elba for letting us use our beautiful park free of charge. So many people commented on what a wonderful place it is. And of course, thank you to all of the people who came out to the festivals - even in the pouring rain - we cannot say enough about your loyalty, support, positive comments and smiling faces! We hope to see you again next year!
Social Security not a perk I am a 73-year-old single lady by circumstance. My Social Security takes up most of my mortgage. I have to work in order to make a car payment, pay utilities, insurance, gas, medication, etc. Food is at the bottom of the list. I will continue to work because I have to, like so many others. Social Security was taken out of my pay weekly since I was 18 years old. I would say that 55 years worth of deductions belongs to me and to everyone who reaches the age to collect SSI regardless if they work or not. I’m fortunate that I am able to work 30 hours a week, but who knows what the future will bring. Social Security is not a perk for older workers; it belongs to us senior citizens! Social Security not doubled response Are you suggesting that a company is some magical floating entity that exists to pay bills and taxes and offer “perks” to the owner? Who do you think works seven days a week, 365 days a year, with no benefits, no healthcare, no pension, no paid days off, no dental? Who pays self-employment tax? Whose personal bank account do all taxes come out of, including both the company’s and the owner’s share of Social Security? The “company” does not pay for these things. Try running your own business before “educating” others on what they do and do not pay.

GREAT PART-TIME JOBS FOR RETIREES Teaching: Retirees can also put their professional experience to work in the classroom. Inquire about teaching opportunities at a nearby university or even the local high school. Such opportunities may only be available on a volunteer basis, but some might pay part-time salaries or small stipends. Either way, many retirees find that working with young people helps them stay young, and passing on lessons learned to younger generations can provide a strong sense of purpose.
