Decks add character and functionality to a home, increasing outdoor entertaining space and oftentimes improving the resale value of a home. Homeowners have various options when choosing decking materials, but one such option, composite decking, is growing in popularity.

Decks used to primarily be made from pressure-treated lumber. While lumber remains a popular material, more and more homeowners are opting for composite decking products. As anyone who has pressure-washed, stained and sealed wood decks can attest, such spaces require lots of upkeep to look new year after year. Composite decks require much less maintenance, making them highly attractive to homeowners who would rather spend time using their decks instead of maintaining them.

Stay Warm All Season!

HOW TO AVOID THE COLD COMFORT OF A DRAFTY HOUSE

For those who live in older homes, the transition to colder weather can be extra disheartening, as the vision of expensive heating bills, chilly rooms and drafty windows dance in their heads. However, it’s easy to change the outlook fromcoldtocozywithafewsimple DIY solutions.

The most effective way to improve the comfort level in your home is to properly insulate. Insulation can beinadequateinolderhomes.Over time, it can settle and compact, creating gaps. Topping up attic insulation will help keep the warm air in, reducing heating bills and preventing stress on your furnace. For easy installation, homeowners andprofessionalsalikerecommend a stone wool batt insulation. For attics, aim for an r-value of R-50 or adepthof16inches.

A little preparation can go a long way to keep the cold at bay. Seal out drafts by replacing worn weatherstripping and caulking along windows, doors, baseboards, and trim. For other ways to beat the cold, consider inexpensive window insulation kits along with thicker drapes, and don’t forget to reverse ceiling fans to push warm air back down.

Plan a day to shop local fairs, shops & stands

Crafts, jewelry and décor: Include a trip to a craft fair, where local vendors come together to display and sell their wares, on your weekend schedule. Handcrafted items make thoughtful and unique gifts, which can be tucked away for giving later in the year.

Booths at these types of events tend to be diverse. Spend the day strolling town squares or closed-off city centers, and you may find some handfashioned jewelry or home-crafted artisanal soaps. Those eager to enhance their homes’ décor may find unique items like painted signs, knit afghans and much more.

PAVING & SEALING

MILLWORK CAN ADD APPEAL & A CLASSIC FEEL

Homeowners are discovering that architectural accents can go a long way toward improving both the look and value of their homes. When renovating a space, the term “millwork” may be mentioned by designers and contractors. While it might be a mystery to some, millwork can give rooms unique looks.

Millwork refers to items traditionally made from raw lumber in a sawmill. Examples of millwork include crown molding, base trims, door frames, window casings, chair rails, and paneling. Cabinets may also classify as millwork.

REDUCE RADON IN YOUR HOME

One of the most popular methods of reducing radon concentrations involves a process called active soil depressurization, or ASD. This is a cost-effective and reliable technique to reduce radon that involves capturing the radon from beneath a building before it can enter the dwelling. A venting system draws the radon gas from the soil beneath the foundation and exhausts it outside of the building - far away from windows and other home openings. A continuously operating fan draws and discharges the radon outdoors.

Radon that has infiltrated water supplies may require other removal methods. Such methods may require spraying water into a contained air space, introducing air bubbles into the water or storing water in a tank until the radon has decayed. Another method employs granular activated carbon (GAC) to remove radon from the water. The GAC method has been more widely tested and is more commonly used in individual homes, according to the EPA.

WAYS TO MAKE HOMES SAFER

Improving traction around the house also can minimize falls. Throw rugs and runners can be made more secure with nonslip rubber backings. Bath rugs can reduce slipping on wet surfaces in the bathroom. Also, nonslip mats can be used inside of showers and bathtubs.

Use shoe trays to reduce puddling from melting snow or rain runoff in entryways. Mop up spills quickly, and consider the use of matteor textured-finished flooring to improve stability underfoot. Promptly remove snow and ice from driveways and walkways. For those who live in cold climates, heated concrete can help melt precipitation before it accumulates.

HOW TO CONFRONT FREQUENT INCREASES IN COSTS OF LIVING

Frequently review your budget. Keep track of how much items cost right now. Document all spending by writing down a list of weekly expenses or utilizing any number of free budgeting apps available. Tracking what is going out may make it easier to cut costs on less essential items, such as streaming services or gym memberships.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE INVESTING IN REAL ESTATE

Rental potential and the local labor force: Location is a significant factor to consider when investing in real estate, but recent shifts in how and where people work could change the real estate investment landscape. A 2020 Gartner, Inc., survey of more than 300 financial executives and leaders in the finance industry found that roughly 25 percent will move at least one out of every five of their on-site workers to permanently remote positions in the years ahead. Economists note that this shift to remote working could be among the more lasting trends to emerge from the pandemic. Before investing in real estate, prospective investors should examine local trends to see if more and more locals are working remotely, and whether or not that’s affecting the market for rentals.

Fair Housing Statement

TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE AND CONNECTED DURING A MOVE

(NAPSI) — Planning a move can be stressful, but planning a move in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic brings a new set of challenges. Stay safe and connected with some smart pre-move planning; here are some tips:

Follow Approved Protocols — If you can’t postpone your move, take extra precautions before moving in to ensure your new place is clean. Follow general disinfecting guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Among other surfaces, disinfect doors, door handles, bathrooms, kitchen appliances, countertops and—something many people don’t really think about—cabinet and doorknobs as well as light switches.

Safely Stay Connected — New work-from-home protocols and online schooling mean reliable Internet connectivity is more important than ever. Prior to your move, SmartMove can connect you to your local provider and help arrange new Touchless Installs that let you safely connect your tech services yourself. Cable companies deliver equipment with step-by-step activation information so you can set up your system on your own, or with support over the phone, online, through chat functionality or video tutorials. In most cases, no technician will need to enter your home.

Keep in Touch & Maintain Daily Routines — You may be staying in more, but don’t forget to take a break from unpacking boxes. Use your new online connection to find delivery services to help stock your pantry and fridge and refill prescriptions. Your new house will feel more like home if you take time to watch your favorite shows, maintain your exercise program or explore online courses that can help you discover new talents or resume old hobbies. Don’t forget to connect with friends through group video chats or viewing parties—you can even take your friends and family on a virtual tour of your new place!

Autumn! sad, sighing, yet most lovely Autumn, again art thou here; and again with feelings “pleasant but mournful to my soul,” do I greet thy return. And the strangest feelings of mingled pleasure and pain are awakened at thy approach, though thou excitest emotions less rapturous and fancies less playful, yet hath thy presence for me a solace and a spell unfelt amid the greener verdure, brighter sunbeams and more fragrant flowers of Summer. Dearer to me than the clustering roses of June, are they withered stalk and falling leaf.... And for the heart, the busy, changeful human heart, thou hast a thousand stirring chords, whose vibrations awaken with an electric influence its slumbering sensibilities, and whose sympathetic music responds with all the truth of an echo.

~Elizabeth J. Eames, “An Autumn Reverie,” October 1840

Leaving An Estate To Charity

One doesn’t have to be a famous movie producer or sports star to donate assets to charity in wills. Individuals sometimes make the choice to leave a portion of their estate to a favorite charity to create a legacy that helps the unfortunate. Such a decision may surprise family members, so it may be wise to discuss plans when drafting wills and ensuring that the correct method of bequeathing estates to charitiesisfollowed.

When a will is written, it is typically in a person’s best interest to consult with an estate-planning attorney prior to making any decisions. When working in conjunction with a financial planner, an attorney can help you grow your estate and ensure your assets will be distributed according toyourwishes.

Here’s A Tip

With holidays on the way, money is getting tight in my household. is is a fun, creative way to save a bit of cash: Plan a no-spend weekend every month, where you don’t spend any money on your activities. Challenge your children to help you plan it or take turns finding activities.

Blazing Trails & Friendships Kayte McIntosh and the Naples Women’s Hiking Group

When Kayte McIntosh moved to Naples during the pandemic in April 2020, she did not know a single person, but that didn’t last long. Originally from Nebraska, she had lived in Colorado for several years before landing in Naples. An active person who had always enjoyed hiking, Kayte wanted to meet other like-minded women, so she created e Naples Women’s Hiking Group for women aged 18-99 who like or love to hike in Naples and the surrounding Finger Lakes region.

Using Facebook as the meet-up platform, the group started with just one woman and now includes nearly 700 women in the area, with hikes nearly every week.

Since the group’s inception, Kayte typically plans a few hikes a month and encourages other members to coordinate and post their own hike meetups with other women in the group. e goal is for women to connect in a healthy way and enjoy nature together. Anyone in the group can plan a hike and post hike details such as where to meet, trail name or map coordinates, length, and level of difficulty. Members then comment if they plan to join the hike or click “going,” so the organizer knows who and how many to expect.

Anywhere from three to twelve – or sometimes more – women show up for any given hike. Sometimes, women go to brunch or a brewery a er a hike to keep the conversation and good cheer going.

Since its formation, the group has hiked hundreds of miles in the Finger Lakes region in all seasons, covering ground in High Tor Wilderness Area, Ontario County Park, Bristol Mountain, Wesley Hill, Harriet Hollister, Mendon Ponds, and trails around Hammondsport, Branchport, Hemlock, Seneca, and Keuka Lakes, to name a few. Fortunate to live directly in the path of the Finger Lakes Trail, which is part of a trail system that is over a thousand miles long, there are always trails to discover and favorite ones to return to. One favorite is the Conklin Gully hike in High Tor. Hiking up the steep hill next to the gully is not only a great workout for a relatively short hike, but it offers breathtaking views of the gully and a peep of Canandaigua Lake from the top. Naples is also home to Grimes Glen, where a one-mile out-and-back hike,

some of it through the creek, rewards hikers with two spectacular waterfall sightings.

Many women in the group have a lot of outdoor knowledge and experience to share. Over time, the group expanded to include hikes outside the Finger Lakes region, with backpacking trips, annual Adirondack camping trips, and even a winter excursion to Virginia to hike in Shenandoah National Park. One member, Katie Wake, has organized and led several backpacking trips ranging from one night to week-long adventures. As Kayte puts it, “Shortly a er Katie Wake joined the group, she began taking it to new heights, planning backpacking adventures in the Finger Lakes Region, the ADK and beyond. Her forward thinking, organization skills, and passion for backpacking shine as she engages with others who are interested in joining one of her many adventures. I am so grateful to call Katie a friend and I love to see other women connecting with Katie in this group, challenging themselves with back country adventures.”

e hiking group promotes health, outdoor exploration, relationship building, and fun. Some women who met through the group now run, bike, kayak, and play pickleball together. Some meet up on the weekends for dinner, live music, game nights, or backyard chilling. As Kayte puts it, “ is group has been alive for almost 4 years now, and I’ve met about 100 of you in person on a hike – some of you are now good friends of mine that I likely wouldn’t have met if not through this group.” Many of these friends, grateful for her vision and leadership, proudly marched with Kayte in the Celebrate Naples parade on September 7th behind the Naples Women’s Hiking Group banner. Just as a hike begins with a single step, Kayte’s actions created a group where women have flourished in the outdoors and created strong bonds of friendship.

COMMON CONDITIONS THAT CAN AFFECT DOGS

Parvovirus: Many dogs come in contact with parvo by touching or ingesting the feces of an infected dog in close quarters. Symptoms include vomiting, weight loss and lethargy. Parvo is highly preventable with a vaccine.

HOW TO PHOTOGRAPH YOUR PET

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’ve been trying to take a picture of my cat “Jess” all summer long. But every photo looks terrible. Do you have any tips for taking good pictures of pets? -- Taylor H., Taos, New Mexico

DEAR TAYLOR: Patience and practice are your best friends when trying to get a great shot of your pet. Cats aren’t known for their tolerance of sitting in one pose for very long (especially when you’re trying to force them into a pose), and even well-trained dogs can’t stay in place too long.

Send us a photo! and a brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it! Submit at: or mail to: P.O. Box 340, Avon, NY 14414.

Study the techniques of good photography; you can look them up online. Composition is more important than the device you’re using -whether an expensive camera or your smartphone.

Incorporate these guidelines into your pet photography:

• Opportunity: Rather than posing your pet, photograph them in their daily lives.

• Eye level: Position the camera lens at the same level as your pet’s eyes, rather than aiming down at them.

• Focus: Make sure your device has a sharp focus on the pet’s eyes. If the auto focus has trouble doing so, try angling slightly to one side so their snout isn’t in the way.

• Natural light: Turn off the auto flash and rely on natural light, like sunlight or a warmly lit room. is keeps pets relaxed and gives a nice glow to the image.

• Background: Pay attention to what’s behind your pet. An unscooped litter box behind Jess will really stand out when you’re reviewing the photos.

• Unusual angles: Play around with different angles and perspectives when photographing your pet. Many won’t work, but you might be surprised at the ones that look amazing. Most important, have fun!

Send your tips, comments or questions to ask@pawscorner.com.

How to Recognize Normal Versus High Blood Pressure

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have been confused about what normal blood pressure is for me (or anyone). I know there is some debate on what normal is today, but let us say that normal is 120/80 mm Hg. Does this mean that 110/90 mm Hg, 130/70 mm Hg, or 150/50 mm Hg is also normal? Is there any significance of the ratio between systolic and diastolic blood pressure? -- L.P.

ANSWER: Because so many people have high blood pressure, and the consequences of untreated or poorly treated high blood pressure include a risk for heart attacks and strokes, it’s critically important to understand this thoroughly.

For a young, healthy person, the lower the blood pressure, the lower the risk of blood vessel damage that leads to these dreaded complications of heart attack and stroke. I routinely see people with blood pressures of 90/60 mm Hg who are just fine (although they are a bit more likely to faint).

But for middle-aged and older people, we define blood pressure as normal when the systolic (first or top number) pressure is less than 120 mm Hg and the diastolic (the second or bottom number) is less than 80 mm Hg. Elevated blood pressure is when the systolic pressure is between 120-129 mm Hg and the diastolic pressure is less than 80 mm Hg. It’s considered hypertension when the systolic number is 130 mm Hg or greater, or the diastolic number is 80 mm Hg or greater.

So, all of the readings you proposed are hypertension -not just elevated blood pressure.

Of course, the higher the reading (in general), the higher the risk of damage to the blood vessels and, after some years, the higher the risk of heart attacks or strokes. It’s not the ratio of the systolic and diastolic numbers that is of interest; it’s the difference between them (also called the pulse pressure). So, with the numbers you gave, the pulse pressures are 20, 60 and 100 mm Hg. Independent of blood pressure levels, a higher pulse pressure confers additional risk to the person, mostly because very stiff blood vessels cause a high pulse pressure. Different types of blood pressure medicines affect pulse pressure differently.

Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu.

THE DANGERS OF BELLY FAT

What’s so bad about belly fat? Seeing belly fat as a merely cosmetic concern overlooks the effects it has on overall health.According to the Mayo Clinic, belly fat is not limited to the extra layer of padding just below the skin known as subcutaneous fat. Belly fat also includes visceral fat, which means it extends to deep inside the abdomen and surrounds internal organs. Johns Hopkins Medicine notes that visceral fat in the belly is very close to the liver, which can turn it into cholesterol. From there, the fat goes through the bloodstream and may collect along the walls of the arteries, potentially contributing to a hardening and narrowing of the arteries known as atherosclerosis. The complications of atherosclerosis depends on which arteries are affected, but they can include an assortment of diseases that affect the arteries and a greater risk for aneurysms and chronic kidney disease.

Johns Hopkins Medicine notes that visceral fat is just as harmful for the heart as high blood pressure and smoking. So while efforts to reduce belly fat may initially be embraced to improve appearance, individuals should know that reducing fat in their midsections also can reduce their risk for a host of conditions, some of which are deadly.

UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE

When choosing coverage, you will no doubt be asked if you prefer term insurance or permanent insurance. Term insurance is the least expensive life insurance, and such policies only last for a predetermined number of years. Men and women may purchase life insurance policies if they only want life insurance until they retire or until their children reach adulthood. Permanent insurance is more expensive and will last from the moment you purchase the policy until your death. Many people choose permanent life insurance policies so the money their beneficiaries receive upon their death can be used to pay estate taxes. In addition, there is an investment component to permanent insurance policies, as a portion of the premiums on such policies is invested (policies will spell out how the money is invested) and allowed to grow tax-free so long as the policy is open. Term insurance only provides protection with no investments.

VENT

Thanks to all the great teachers! With the start of school and the anxieties of new surroundings, activities, and friends, it’s encouraging to see so many teachers display kindness and patience with our kids. Some people are quick to blame and judge, while the day to day encouragment that teachers dole out goes unnoticed. Please know that we parents and grandparents see you and appreciate you.

“This building has reached the end of its useful purpose” or “those with food insecurities.” Why do we have to change simple terms? How about, “this building is getting old, it needs remodeling?” How about, “people who struggle to put food on their tables?” Do speakers believe changing a term, like those examples, make them sound more intelligent? Simple, everyday terminology works better for all. • 12 Yd. $425 • 20 Yd. $475

I’ve read where handicapped people like the easier access to carts left there. Two older women were taking one of the carts left there to use. Think twice before berating someone you don’t know. I fell last year and tore my rotator cuff and then fell again last night in my basement and was in a lot of pain after shopping and loading my groceries into my trunk. GET A HANDLE ON WORK-RELATED STRESS

Embrace relaxation methods. The APA recommends professionals coping with workplace stress embrace techniques that can effectively alleviate stress. Such techniques include meditation and deep-breathing exercises and can help workers develop their ability to focus purposefully on a single activity. That improved focus may help workers better navigate hectic working environments without succumbing to the stress such environments can produce.

Clark Manor House Assisted Living is searching for a relief cook. We are a 16 bed facility that acts like a big family. No evenings or nights required. Experience in a commercial kitchen or similar setting a plus. Must pass a background check.

RELIEVE STRESS THROUGHOUT THE DAY

Walk away. The APA notes that taking a break from a stressor is one of a handful of healthy techniques that research has indicated is a successful way to reduce stress, both in the short- and long-term. If a project at work is proving especially stressful, step away for a short period of time to do something else, whether it’s to go for a brief walk or converse with a coworker about something unrelated to the project. Avoiding the stress entirely, especially if it’s a work project or a bill that must be paid, is not the answer. But a short break from the stressor and thinking about it can provide a new perspective and time to calm down.

Plan a day to shop local fairs, shops & stands

Food finds: As plants are harvested, many items are turned into delicious treats. No autumn shopping excursion is complete until you smell a freshbaked apple pie or some apple cider doughnuts. Corn breads and fritters, cranberry snacks and wines from nearby wineries also are easy to find in autumn. These items make welcome additions to your own pantry, or bring a freshly made treat to a friend or family member’s home when paying a visit.

Also, don’t miss the food-related festivals that pop up on community calendars in the fall. From garlic to potatoes to pumpkins to cheeses, many seasonal items are on display. You also can sample these foods in interesting applications and make a day of gathering recipes and supplies to enjoy later.
