STAY SAFE WHEN GARDENING IN HOT WEATHER
Take note of your physical condition. Many people garden alone, so it’s important that gardeners learn the symptoms of heat-related illnesses. The CDC notes that elevated body temperatures, headache, rapid pulse, dizziness, nausea, and/or confusion are some common symptoms of heat-related illnesses. Gardeners should go indoors the moment any such symptoms appear.
TURN
Provide outdoor atmosphere: Create a bespoke bistro vibe by using freestanding planters and posts along with hanging lights to make an intimate outdoor hangout spot at night. For those with permanent structures, like a deck or a gazebo, lights can be strung across the area or on railings or edging.

The BATMAN
DID YOU KNOW? When nurses go to work each day, many report to hospitals while others work at private practices. For others, a day at the office takes place at research labs. According to the online nursing resource Nurse.org, research nurses develop and implement studies to investigate and provide information on new medications, vaccinations and medical procedures. Research nurses, sometimes referred to as clinical nurse researchers or nurse researchers, typically have advanced degrees, and many first work as research assistants, clinical data collectors and/or clinical research monitors to gain some practical experience as they pursue or consider pursuing their degrees. Some research nurses even conduct independent research, though Nurse.org notes that such professionals need advanced degrees such as an MSN or Ph.D. to pursue such a path. More information about becoming a research nurse can be found at www.Nurse.org.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE INVESTING IN REAL ESTATE
Condition of the property: Product shortages were another trend to emerge during the pandemic, and disruptions to the supply chain will not necessarily go away anytime soon. In addition, the cost of various products associated with home improvements, including lumber, skyrocketed during the pandemic. The National Association of Home Builders noted that while lumber prices declined in 2021, the price of lumber packages quoted to builders remained high. That means real estate investors who invest in properties that will need work could be forced to pay a lot to fix these properties. And ongoing supply chain issues could extend the time it takes to renovate a property. Investors must be able to bear these costs and lag times to make the most off their real estate investments.

Charcoal grills can remain hot for hours, even long after the flames have extinguished. As a result, charcoal grill users should recognize that their jobs are not done once the burgers, hot dogs and other foods have been removed from the grill. To safeguard against fires resulting from still-hot charcoal grills, grillmasters should avoid moving the grill while the coals are still burning hot. In addition, avoid placing any flammable objects close to the grill while the coals are cooling down. Potentially combustible items should also be kept far away from charcoal grills, ideally in locations where gusts of wind cannot blow them toward the grill. Charcoal grill owners can also inspect the metal grates on their grills to make sure they are not rusted. Damaged or rusted grates can make it possible for items to fall down onto surfaces below the grate, increasing the risk of fire. Another way for charcoal grill users to make using their grills more safe is to avoid the use of starter fluid or other igniters once the coals have been ignited. Doingsoonlyincreasestheriskof fire or accident and is unlikely to help the coals maintain a strong flame that lasts long enough to cook foods quickly.

NONSENSE
Here’s a tip
* When I need to dust the ceiling, I don’t have a fancy contraption; I just use my broom. If you have popcorn ceilings, you can rubber band a feather duster to the end of your broom. Look around your house, and maybe you’ll find a sneaky cleaning purpose for everyday items.
* Dirty candles can be cleaned up quickly with a leg of panty hose. Slip the candle in the hose, rub the outside of the candle and release.
* You can use a coffee filter to clean the screen of your television. It’s not scratchy and non-static. Be sure not to press down hard into today’s screens. And use only approved cleaners for your flatscreen and plasma television sets.
* Need to clean your iron? Scrub the face with salt. en heat it and run the iron over the salt. I pour the salt on foil for even more heat effect.

NOTIFICATION TOTAL TRIHALOMETHANES
Date: August 22, 2023
To: Customers/Residents of: VILLAGE OF MANCHESTER
From: VILLAGE OF MANCHESTER BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Required water quality tests conducted quarterly and averaged as a locational running annual average for the previous twelve months indicated the presence of total trihalomethanes at 88 micrograms per liter (ug/l), which is above the maximum contaminant level (MCL) allowed in a public water supply of 80 micrograms per liter (ug/l). is is a maximum contaminant level violation of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR 141.64.) is violation requires public notice be provided to all customers on a quarterly basis for as long as the violation exists.
e New York State Department of Health sets drinking water standards and has determined that the presence of total trihalomethanes is a possible health concern. Trihalomethanes are a group of chemicals that includes chloroform, bromoform, bromodichloromethane, and chlorodibromomethane. Trihalomethanes are formed in drinking water during treatment by chlorine, which is the most commonly used disinfectant in New York State. Chlorine reacts with certain acids that are in naturally-occurring organic material (e.g., decomposing vegetation such as tree leaves, algae or other aquatic plants) in surface water sources such as rivers and lakes. e amount of trihalomethanes formed in drinking water during disinfection can change from day to day, depending on the temperature, the amount of organic material in the water, the amount of chlorine added, and a variety of other factors. Drinking water is disinfected by public water suppliers to kill bacteria and viruses that could cause serious illnesses. For this reason, disinfection of drinking water by chlorination is beneficial to public health.
Some studies suggest that people who drink chlorinated water (which contains trihalomethanes) or water containing elevated levels of trihalomethanes for long periods of time may have an increased risk for certain health effects. For example, some studies of people who drank chlorinated drinking water for 20 to 30 years show that long term exposure to disinfection by-products (including trihalomethanes) is associated with an increased risk for certain types of cancer. A few studies of women who drank water containing trihalomethanes during pregnancy show an association between exposure to elevated levels of trihalomethanes and small increased risks for low birth weights, miscarriages and birth defects. However, in each of the studies, how long and how frequently people actually drank the water, as well as how much trihalomethanes the water contained is not known for certain. erefore, we do not know for sure if the observed increases in risk for cancer and other health effects are due to trihalomethanes or some other factor. e individual trihalomethanes chloroform, bromodichloromethane and dibromochloromethane cause cancer in laboratory animals exposed to high levels over their lifetimes. Chloroform, bromodichloromethane and dibromochloromethane are also known to cause effects in laboratory animals a er high levels of exposure, primarily on the liver, kidney, nervous system and on their ability to bear healthy offspring. Chemicals that cause adverse health effects in laboratory animals a er high levels of exposure may pose a risk for adverse health effects in humans exposed to lower levels over long periods of time.
e following areas have been affected: VILLAGE OF MANCHESTER
e following steps are being taken to correct this violation: e Board is reviewing options with the Town of Farmington and the City of Canandaigua where we purchase our water. So far options include increase flushing of hydrants per year and a relocation of the chlorinator.
• Customers that have tenants, please notify them of this violation.
• At this time no additional precautions by customers/residents are necessary.
If you have any questions, please contact either the NYS Department of Health at 315-789-3030 or DPW Supervisor George C. Hotchkiss at 585-289-4340.

As Summer Turns to Fall, Turn to Your Local Libraries to Find Treasures
BY SUZIE WELLS
As summer winds down and children of all ages transition from summer to schooltime schedules, I wanted to explore some local treasures we may overlook. Libraries are an essential hub of any community, and librarians from Brighton, Fairport, Mendon, and Webster shared their insights.
e library has become a space where families, kids, teens, and adults come together to explore the world of books and enjoy exciting events and activities together. Offering a wide array of materials for patrons to borrow, including books, movies, CDs, magazines, newspapers, audiobooks, video games, even mobile hotspots and electronic devices, and passes to local attractions, libraries provide communities a wealth of materials and opportunities.
All librarians I interviewed raved about this year’s Summer Reading Program, keeping children, teens, and adults reading all summer long.
Elissa Schaeffer, Children’s Services Manager of Brighton Library, raves about their summer Cupcake Wars and Escape Room events as well as their ursday music program, especially the RPO’s Instrument Petting Zoo, and live animal experiences. Brighton Library has a wide array of events and activities throughout the year. Check out their website at brightonlibrary.org for current offerings.
Anna Lippincott, of Fairport Library, says their weekly Gazebo Concert series with Perinton Recreation Dept was a hit this summer, as were specialty art programs. Fairport Library has exciting programs and title releases year-round, so stay-tuned at fairportlibrary.org. Anna particularly loves their trivia events, Murder Mystery Movie series, and Brown Bag Book Reviews. e Friends of Fairport Library own and operate e Cornerstore Bookstore above the library and the Book Bin inside the library, and they coordinate the FROST partnership to deliver books and library materials to those who love to read but can’t get to the library.
Kelly Paganelli, Children’s Librarian at Mendon Library, says their summer and year-round activities have been such fun. From story times to music, cra , teen, or adult program, there’s something for everyone. Firefly Friends continues to be a hit with the younger set and their caregivers. Check out their upcoming Health RX series and Tuesday Travel Talks. Kelly says there are so many new books on the shelves, but they’re “way more than just books.” For the latest news and events, visit mendonlibrary.org.
Webster Library patrons love the Candyland, Rainbow Fun, and Friendship camp, as well as the summer reading program for all ages. is fall, check out the Fall book sale, Latin Dance night, evening family programs such as Family Night, PJ Storytime, and Make it Mondays. Webster Library’s Ketsia Mari says, with “Mobile Wi-Fi units, experience kits, VIP and Empire passes, curbside pickup, and tech tutors, the library has something for everyone!” Check them out at websterlibrary.org.
Even in this largely digital age, public libraries stand as sanctuaries for meaningful connections, growth, and shared experiences. It’s where stories come alive, friendships form, and exploration thrives. Whether a library enthusiast or newcomer, step into your local library for a journey that transcendsgenerations, offeringdiscovery, growth, andendlesspossibilities.
Kelly Paganelli says, “We want everyone to feel welcome and comfortable here. Please come by and see what we offer and if you want something, please ask.” If one library doesn’t have something you need, chances are the librarians can find it through the county system.
Go to gvpennysaver.com to see these Monroe County librarians’ top children, teens, and adults picks as summer winds down!

GET ON THE FAST TRACK TO BEING ORGANIZED
• Keep a cleanup bin handy. Put an empty basket in a central location, using it to gather stray items scattered around main living areas. Once everything has been collected, items can be returned to their rightful place.
• Make the bed. One of the easiest ways to keep a room looking neat is to make the bed each day. Store clean linens in a pillow case so the entire set is together and ready to go.
• Purge closets and cabinets. There’s no point allowing old, stained or damaged items to take up space. Set aside days to clear expired medication from the bathroom cabinet, discard ripped or ill-fitting clothing from the closet, or to dispose of broken toys in a nursery.
• Write things down. Tasks seem more manageable when they are writtendowninblack-and-whiteandcanbecrossedoffascompleted. Writing things down also helps make the mind feel more organized.
• Exercise caution before buying. Don’t buy more than you need; otherwise, you’ll have to find space for extra items. Also, keep inventory of food and supplies in the house so you’re not unwittingly buying duplicates.
• Sort mail and paperwork. Establish different categories for papers so they can be sorted and discarded as needed. These may include bills, invitations, school papers, and junk mail. Reduce paper clutter by opting for digital correspondence when possible.
• Make one repair at a time. Tackle that source of stress by focusing on one repair and seeing it through to completion.
• Delegate the work. If kids want to help organize, let them. It can be a fun project for an adolescent to rearrange the pantry or offer their ideas for corralling messes.

Spinal Cord Injury
Misdiagnosed as Blood Pressure Stroke
DEAR DR. ROACH: Have you ever heard of a “low blood pressure stroke”? That was my husband’s (incorrect) diagnosis several years back when he suddenly could not move his arms and legs. He was told that not enough oxygen was getting to his spine. (His blood pressure is historically low, usually around 90/60.)
FUN WAYS TO KEEP KIDS OCCUPIED OVER SUMMER BREAK
Find something free: Play dates are a great way to make kids happy and take a little off of parents’ daily plates. Arrange routine summer play dates with children’s school friends, neighbors and/or cousins. Parents can alternate hosting responsibilities so they can get work done at home and enjoy a break when it’s not their turn to host.
Magic Maze
NONSENSE
That lasted about seven months, and he was bedridden the entire time. He then went to a neurosurgeon and was (correctly) diagnosed with a spinal cord injury. He had C1-C2 surgery and had use of his limbs the next day. After months of physical therapy, he regained a lot of function. We’ve never heard of that diagnosis before or after his experience. Does it really exist? -- E.S.K.
ANSWER: The brain has tremendous ability to regulate its own blood flow under a very wide range of blood pressures, but there are some limits. When a person is used to very high blood pressure levels, such as 200/110 for months or years, a sudden drop to 90/60 (or even 120/80 sometimes) can cause a stroke. That’s the main reason we don’t lower blood pressure too quickly in people who have had very high blood pressure levels for a long time. It takes weeks or months for the brain to recover its ability to regulate blood flow.
In a person who has a heart attack, prolonged low blood pressure (or no blood pressure) will also cause brain damage. That’s why starting CPR as quickly as possible is so critical in order to preserve brain function.
In both of these cases, not enough blood is getting to the central nervous system (the brain, the spinal cord and the retinas), which can lead to cell death -- the hallmark of a stroke. But these are extreme cases.
A healthy person whose normal blood pressure is around 90/60 is at risk for fainting when suddenly standing; however, they are at a lower-than-average risk for heart disease and stroke. The diagnosis of “a low blood pressure stroke” for your husband doesn’t make any sense at all to me, and advanced imaging of the brain should have made it abundantly clear that it was not the right diagnosis.
I’m shocked that he wasn’t treated correctly for that long. But I’m very happy to hear that his neurosurgeon did not assume the diagnosis of a stroke, instead making the correct diagnosis and performing the procedure to help him recover. Your husband is fortunate that he still had neurological function to recover after such a long time, since spinal cord injuries generally heal better when treated promptly.

We just had a large bank of solar panels installed. I would like to plant bee and butterfly friendly flowers under and behind the panels. I would prefer perennials and an assortment that would grow through the entire season. What would you recommend as this will be partially shaded most of the time?
I don’t know how large your solar panel area is, but I would start with a part of it so you don’t get overwhelmed. You will probably prefer planting self-seeding annuals because perennials are often more
difficult to start from seeds. If you take the time in fall to spread the dried seed heads every year, you might not need to replant. You could decide to add additional varieties. You can begin now by killing all existinggrowthbysmotheringitwith sheets of cardboard. Put this down soon while plants are still growing. I would wait until March to remove it. Sprinkle the seeds and go over them with a leaf rake to get better soil contact. Your first year you will plant the fewest seeds; subsequent years seeds from plants you have grown

will be plentiful. Some seeds will be eaten by critters over the winter,so I prefer early-spring planting the first year.
American Meadows offers a seed mix selected for part shade and instructions for creating this type of garden. More details are offered on YouTube, so you can get a better
feel for this project. You will need to periodicallyremoveinvadingweeds; a couple of times per year might be sufficient. These seed mixes are offered in a selection of sizes for smaller or larger areas.

Prevent summer sun and heat damage to your car
Clean out your “stuff.” The heat can cause items inside vehicles to melt or explode. Depending on the product, a lot of staining or damage can occur if items melt or explode inside a car. Wax-based products can be particularly harmful. Be wary of leaving lipstick, crayons, candles, lip balms, sunscreen, and lotions inside vehicles on hot days. In addition, remove canned carbonated beverages and other canned items to reduce likelihood of spills.

STRAWBERRY-GLAZED FRENCH TOAST WITH SWEETENED SOUR CREAM Serves
• 8 1-inch-thick bread slices, cut from a country or peasant loaf
• 2 cups half-and-half
• 4 egg yolks
• 3 tablespoons light brown sugar
• 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, plus 1/2 teaspoon
• 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
• 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
• 1/2 cup sour cream
• 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
• 1/3 cup strawberry jam or preserves (see note 2)
1. Arrange a rack at center position and preheat the oven to 400 F. Place the bread slices on a baking sheet and bake until dry and very lightly browned, about 8 minutes per side. Watch carefully so that the bread does not burn. Remove the bread from the oven and reduce the oven temperature to 200 F.
2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the half-and-half, egg yolks, brown sugar, 1 tablespoon vanilla, and cinnamon. Pour the mixture into a shallow pan (a 9-by-13-inch glass baking dish works well). Add the
4
toasted bread slices and soak them 4 minutes per side. Remove to a large plate or platter.
3. Place a large, heavy frying pan over low to medium heat. Add about 2 teaspoons of the butter, or enough to coat the bottom of the pan lightly. When melted, add enough bread slices to fit comfortably in a single layer. Cook slowly until the slices are golden brown and crisp on both sides, about 4 minutes per side. Remove to a baking sheet and place in the warm oven. Repeat, adding more butter to the pan as needed until all the bread slices have been sautéed.
4. In a small bowl, stir together the sour cream, granulated sugar and remaining 1/2 teaspoon vanilla.
5. When ready to serve, spread each toast with a thin coating of strawberry jam and top with a dollop of sweetened sour cream.
Note 1: The best bread for this dish is an unsliced loaf of good-quality peasant or country bread, preferably one without an extra-hard crust. One that is rectangular, rather than round, is more convenient, but either will do. Cut off the ends of the loaf, and reserve for another use. Then slice the bread into 1-inch-thick slices. If your loaf is large and the slices seem large, cut them in half. Note 2: You can try other jams, preserves or marmalades. Cherry, raspberry or peach preserves and orange marmalade are other possibilities.

With Much Gratitude
A huge thank you to the woman in line behind me at the Geneseo Wegmans last Wednesday. I inadvertently left my credit card in another wallet, and even though the cashier said they would put my order aside while I went home to get my card, you insisted on paying for my groceries. At 94 I am grateful for each day, and for people like you.
Angels DO exist among us
While shopping on August 26, I took a nasty spill outside of Target in Webster. It resulted in some cuts and abrasions and was witnessed by a woman and her son whom I consider to be true angels. They helped me to a bench in the store and got some wet paper towels for the bleeding and stayed as the store manager and security talked with me, patched my wounds, and filled out an accident report. She filled out a witness report. I thanked her over and over for all they did. I continued with some shopping and as I was checking out, she approached me with a bag with home medical supplies and a get well card and gift card to help me feel better. Her kindness and support blew me away and I forgot to get her first name. So, this is a huge thank you shout out to her and her son for being angels beyond what anyone would normally do. I intend to pay your kindness forward and it is encouraging to know you and others like you care in an ever-increasingly greedy world. Thank you again and always.

Excuse me! Genesee Valley Penny Saver!
Seniors are not the only ones who need to watch for school buses, their lights, children, etc.! I resent being selected as one who does not drive safely. If you drive at all, you will have seen drivers running red lights, tailgating, passing illegally and speeding. Roads are a very dangerous place to be these days. I wish there were more traffic cops to deal with these reckless drivers. Driving a car is a privilege, not a right owed to anyone. So please, GVPS, how about tending the cautionary note to all drivers and not just seniors?
(A note from GVPS: Sorry if it looked like we were addressing this message only to seniors. We had a note for everyone on the front cover about watching out for buses with the start of school, but this particular piece ran in the Active Living 50+ page and that’s why it was addressed to seniors. We’ll do our best to catch this kind of thing in the future as the message is important for all. Thanks for pointing it out!)
Handicap parking
At a local Labor Day Festival, I had a scuffle with some people over handicap parking. My wife is recovering from a stroke, but the handicap parking lot at this festival was completely full, with several cars lacking handicap plates or hangers. I confronted some people at one of these cars about parking for my wife, and received a rage-filled obscenity-laced refusal to move. Fortunately a police officer came over to de-escalate the situation. But it turned out that one of these people really was handicapped, and he said he couldn’t find his hanger. Yet he “found” it very quickly when the police officer spoke to him. Then I tried to apologize to the man and received more of the same anger and rage.
People, if you have a handicap hanger, use it, and please don’t argue with someone who stands up for handicap rights. If you aren’t handicapped, please don’t take parking spaces from the people who really need them.
