Approach the individual and ask questions in pointed ways. Rather than, “What can I do to help?”, which may result in an answer of, “Nothing,” figure out a way to pitch in and then ask if that would be acceptable.This may be, “Would you like me to run to the supermarket for you today?”

MAKE A WINTER TRAINING SCHEDULE FOR YOUR PET
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My German Shepherd, “Dante,” is smart but stubborn, and constant training is essential. But I wanted to share a method I use to make sure I keep up with his basic obedience training and work on advanced skills year-round.
Every three to four months, I sit down with a new notebook and make a training journal for Dante. It helps me organize my thoughts around how to best train him in the late fall and winter, when going outside every day isn’t always possible, or the weather is so unpleasant that Dante won’t listen to my commands.
I write down the training goals I want to accomplish during this period. I note any behavioral or training issues that Dante has had up to now. Shepherds, like many big dogs and herders, have a lot of energy and need at least an hour per day of exercise, so I figure out the best times to do that. ere are also a lot of holidays during this period, and the journal gives me a place to figure out in advance how I will handle travel, training, parties and other schedule challenges.

STRAWBERRY-GLAZED FRENCH TOAST WITH SWEETENED SOUR CREAM Serves 4
• 8 1-inch-thick bread slices, cut from a country or peasant loaf
• 2 cups half-and-half
• 4 egg yolks
• 3 tablespoons light brown sugar
• 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, plus 1/2 teaspoon
• 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
• 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
• 1/2 cup sour cream
• 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
• 1/3 cup strawberry jam or preserves (see note 2)
1. Arrange a rack at center position and preheat the oven to 400 F. Place the bread slices on a baking sheet and bake until dry and very lightly browned, about 8 minutes per side. Watch carefully so that the bread does not burn. Remove the bread from the oven and reduce the oven temperature to 200 F.
2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the half-and-half, egg yolks, brown sugar, 1 tablespoon vanilla, and cinnamon. Pour the mixture into a shallow pan (a 9-by-13-inch glass baking dish works well). Add the
toasted bread slices and soak them 4 minutes per side. Remove to a large plate or platter.
3. Place a large, heavy frying pan over low to medium heat. Add about 2 teaspoons of the butter, or enough to coat the bottom of the pan lightly. When melted, add enough bread slices to fit comfortably in a single layer. Cook slowly until the slices are golden brown and crisp on both sides, about 4 minutes per side. Remove to a baking sheet and place in the warm oven. Repeat, adding more butter to the pan as needed until all the bread slices have been sautéed.
4. In a small bowl, stir together the sour cream, granulated sugar and remaining 1/2 teaspoon vanilla.
5. When ready to serve, spread each toast with a thin coating of strawberry jam and top with a dollop of sweetened sour cream.
Note 1: The best bread for this dish is an unsliced loaf of good-quality peasant or country bread, preferably one without an extra-hard crust. One that is rectangular, rather than round, is more convenient, but either will do. Cut off the ends of the loaf, and reserve for another use. Then slice the bread into 1-inch-thick slices. If your loaf is large and the slices seem large, cut them in half.
Note 2: You can try other jams, preserves or marmalades. Cherry, raspberry or peach preserves and orange marmalade are other possibilities.

Learn To Adjust YourBody to a New Sleeping Schedule
DEAR DR. ROACH: I just retired from working the graveyard shift for 40 years. I am hoping you can share some information on how to safely learn to sleep at night once again. -- E.H.
ANSWER: Changing your body’s circadian rhythm isn’t always easy, and after such a long time, it will take longer for you. But it shouldn’t be as difficult as you might fear. When people fly to the other part of the world, they need to get accustomed to a new sleep schedule, and it usually doesn’t take more than a week or two for them to get accustomed. For you, it will be difficult learning to be up during the day, which is more of a behavioral issue than a circadianrhythm issue.
The first advice I give is to push your internal time clock forward, not backward. Try to stay up two hours or so later each day until you get to a bedtime that works with your family (if appropriate) and goals. Your body has an easier time moving forward than backward.
Bright light can be your friend or your enemy. You want bright light when you wake up, not right before bed. Computers, phones and tablets all put out light that signals your brain to wake up, so don’t use these before bed. Making sure that your bedroom is dark when you want to sleep is something you probably have already done, but it’s still worth mentioning.
Caffeine is very helpful to a lot of people, so if you partake, do so when you awaken, not before bedtime. Some people metabolize caffeine slowly, so if you do, don’t have any caffeine for at least 8 hours before planning to go to sleep.
Breast cancer awareness campaigns have helped destigmatize the disease but have not had a significant impact on the incidence of Stage IV disease or on mortality. Stage IV breast cancer is disease that has, at initial diagnosis, spread to distant sites within the body. The incidence of this has not changed since 1975. In 2017, an estimated 40,610 women in our country will die as a result of breast cancer.

TFife and Drum Corps’ Unforgettable Journey to France

he Towpath Volunteers Fife and Drum Corps are no strangers to the people of Upstate NY. Every summer we bring dynamic performances to local parades and festivals, and indeed, have even been found performing in venues like NYC, Disney World, and parts of Europe.
But this summer was special. Towpath had been asked to help commemorate the 80th anniversary of Operation Dragoon, the WWII mission to liberate the people of southern France from Nazi occupation. And so it was that some 50 members found themselves on the shores of the French Riviera being welcomed by our sister corps from St. Tropez.
eir hospitality was incredible. We found ourselves exploring castles and thousand-year-old churches, horseback riding through burgeoning vineyards, and taking cruises alongside $80 million yachts. And of course, the food! Many times we found ourselves at buffet tables overflowing with delicacies, only to discover that this was merely the appetizer to the main course! Bouillabaisse, Tarte Tropézienne... our French vocabulary was rapidly expanding (as were our waistlines!). en it was time to get to the “meat” of the matter: e liberation of France. We toured museums dedicated to the French Resistance. We gathered with members of the French and American military, active members of units that participated in the liberation of Europe some eight decades ago. And, of course, we did what we do best: bring joy and fellowship through the music of the fife and drum. We marched and played down the glitzy, historic streets of local towns, stopping before monuments to the fallen. And as we did so, it rapidly became clear that we were not mere tourists on a sight-seeing vacation; we were commemorating an unforgettable moment for both our countries.
Marching down narrow alleys packed with people, I caught a glimpse of a man carrying his girl upon his shoulders. He waved the Stars and Stripes, she waved the Tricorne. Watching them smiling and swaying to our music, I felt a lump in my throat and couldn’t play a note for half a block.
I laughed and danced with a French woman as a band serenaded us with music from e Andrews Sisters. She had the most wonderful smile, and she said she felt young again. At that moment, it truly could have been 1944.
A grizzled paratrooper kissed my cheeks and thanked me for freeing his country as if it happened last week instead of 80 years ago. We toasted each other and looked out over the sea where fellow paratroopers had dri ed down, never to be seen again.
And perhaps the most poignant moment of all, the lowering of our nation’s flag in a cemetery set aside for American troops, dead or missing but not forgotten. en we gathered with our French hosts for
good food, laughter, and a jam session that lasted well into the night. It is exactly how those dead soldiers would have wanted to be remembered. It’s how I would want to be remembered. We all understood. e wondrous freedoms we now enjoy, paid for by the incredible sacrifices of people we never met but dearly love. And since we couldn’t embrace them, we embraced one another.
Viva la Liberte. Vive L’amitie.
