DID YOU KNOW? According to the Environmental Protection Agency, air currents can carry pesticides that were applied to nearby properties. That means even people who do not apply pesticides in their lawns and gardens can still be at risk of exposure to these potentially harmful chemicals. People concerned by the prospect of being exposed to the pesticides being applied by their neighbors can stay indoors with their children and pets while the substances are being applied. Those who live near fields and parks where pesticides are routinely applied can plant hardy, thick-branched trees to reduce their risk of airborne exposure. The EPA notes that such plants and shrubs can serve as buffers against airborne pesticides, essentially acting as walls around a property that prevent gusty winds from blowing pesticides into yards and gardens.

Here’s A Tip

* To fix a hole in drywall that requires a healthy helping of joint compound, you can cut a piece of screen slightly bigger than the hole and tack it to the inside of the drywall. You also can wad up a piece of aluminum foil and shove it in the hole, pressing it in a bit to create a recess for the compound. e foil will keep the compound at the site of the hole, allowing it to set up instead of fall down. * "I recently did a little work on my car, and a erward I washed and waxed it. My tools got pretty grimy, so I cleaned them too. Since I had the wax out, I used it on several of them to keep them from rusting in storage." -via email

HOW TO ROAD TRIP IN AN ELECTRIC CAR
Determine the charging time of your vehicle. The automotive experts at J.D. Power note that EVs come with different types of charging systems. Level 1 are the most readily available EVs, and these come with a standard 120-volt three prong plug that’s common in modern homes in the United States. That’s convenient, but charging using a Level 1 outlet may take a significant amount of time and only provide a few miles per hour of charging. If you’re renting an EV, confirm which type of car you’re getting and emphasize to the rental agency that you prefer a car that can be charged easily and effectively. One that can be charged overnight and provide hundreds of miles of driving time after a full charge is ideal.

Werner Sun: Bridging the Abstract and the Tangible in his Art
Werner Sun, a visual artist based in Ithaca, NY, currently featured in the No Time To Be Tame exhibit at Main Street Arts in Cli on Springs, merges his background in physics with his creative endeavors to cra intricate, thought-provoking sculptural works that challenge conventional artistic boundaries.
Originally from North Haven, CT, Sun moved to Ithaca 25 years ago to conduct graduate research at Cornell University’s particle accelerator. His deep scientific understanding now permeates his art, transforming digital images into tangible, three-dimensional sculptures through meticulous manual processes.
Sun’s artistic journey began with a challenge to turn 2D images into 3D sculptures. is exploration led him to experiment with printing images on paper and folding them into geometric forms. Over time, this process evolved into creating complex wall sculptures and polyhedral structures displayed on surfaces or suspended in space. His work is characterized by layers of visual material, manipulated in Photoshop, printed, and then cut, glued, and folded into intricate patterns. ese layers serve as a lens through which viewers can interpret underlying images in a rich, multi-dimensional experience.
Sun’s unique approach to art is deeply influenced by his scientific background. He explains, “I take the abstract thought patterns of science and apply them to tangible digital materials, thus imbuing my sculpted prints with the analog sense of time and attention that are central to personal experience.” is intersection of science and art allows Sun to explore profound ideas in a way that resonates on a human scale, making complex scientific concepts accessible through visual art.
roughout his career, Sun has achieved notable recognition. He was commissioned twice by Cornell University to create sculptures for their public spaces, including a kinetic photographic sculpture installation for an international climate change conference, now permanently displayed at the Cornell Botanical Gardens. His work has also been featured in prominent galleries and publications, including a solo exhibition at the CUE Art Foundation in NYC, which earned him the 2019 Aon Artist Empowerment Award. He’s also particularly proud of his solo show at Garrison Art Center that was featured in Hyperallergic, an online arts magazine based in Brooklyn.
Sun’s artistic practice is iterative, o en beginning with a digital photograph that he manipulates and uses as the basis for creation. He describes this process as a continual exploration, saying, “Every visual layer is a lens for interpreting the ones below it… e more layers I add, the more complex things become.” He explains that this helps viewers connect with the work and dive deeper into the concepts. is ongoing evolution of his work, from digital and paper to sculptural forms that defy easy categorization, reflects his commitment to pushing the boundaries of art.
In his recent work, Sun incorporates gestural marks atop the photographic, sculptural material, adding a spontaneous, free-flowing element to his already intricate creations. is new direction he has pursued over the past two years enhances his pieces’ depth and complexity.
Sun says he considers recurring patterns and images in his work, saying those elements have something le for him to learn from. And so he creates. He follows his muse, even (or especially) when he doesn’t yet understand what it’s trying to show him. In discussion with fellow artists, Pat Pauly and Joanna Poag, in August, Sun said he’s “convinced it’s a form of thinking – the motor actions of your hands [reflecting and coordinating with] what’s going on in your head.”
Main Street Arts curator Bradley Butler laughed that Sun is “bridging the gap between the arts and sciences right now,” but all kidding aside, Sun’s work is “not just about placing a token of something into art,” but rather a natural evolution that continually reimagines and clarifies complex ideas. Sun’s quest to see how far he can take his creative explorations embodies the essence of artistic pursuit—a journey that is never complete but always rewarding.
Sun currently lives in Enfield, NY with his husband, Rob, an author of young adult fiction, and their dogs, Billie and Silas. eir 11-acre plot of land o en serves as inspiration for the landscapes in Sun’s artwork.
Werner Sun’s art invites viewers to engage with the abstract in a tangible way, bridging the gap between scientific thought and everyday experience. His work can be found on his website, wernersun.com, and on social media platforms Facebook and Instagram @wernersun.

DVT Patient Switches to Aspirin With Good Results
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am an 81-year-old female who has been on Xarelto for years due to deep vein thrombosis (DVT). I also have an inferior vena cava (IVC) filter. I read that low-dose aspirin (325 mg) is just as effective in preventing clots in the legs as Xarelto, which is very expensive. My doctor advises against changing to aspirin, but won’t give me an explanation as to why. I switched anyway, and the redness in my foot disappeared. After one month of taking 325 mg of coated aspirin daily, I have no symptoms and actually feel better. What are your thoughts? -- A.B.
ANSWER: Although aspirin is better than nothing, it has been proven to be less effective than Xarelto and similar medicines in people who are at risk for blood clots. In a yearlong trial comparing the two, recurrences of DVT (a blood clot in the deep veins of the leg) occurred in just over 1% of people taking Xarelto and in 4.4% of people taking aspirin. (This study used low-dose aspirin -- 100 mg -- rather than the full-dose of 325 mg that you are taking.) The risk of bleeding was about the same among the aspirin group and the Xarelto group.
Aspirin is an anti-inflammatory, which may be why the redness in your foot disappeared. I doubt it had anything to do with a blood clot.
For people at a high risk, I recommend against changing from a more-effective medicine like Xarelto to aspirin. In your case, you are protected against a blood clot in the lung by your filter, which is designed to catch any clot before it can get to the lung. Unfortunately, the IVC filter slightly increases the risk of a recurrence of a blood clot in the legs, so it’s important to keep taking medication to reduce your risk.
Given the serious nature of a blood clot, I can’t recommend disregarding your doctor’s advice, although you deserve a thorough explanation from your doctor. If the main issue for your wanting to change medications is the expense, you might ask your doctor if there are lessexpensive alternatives that would still be as effective as Xarelto. The manufacturer also offers a program to help with expenses.
*** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu.

KUDOS TO FAIRPORT FIREMEN!
Saturday eve at 9PM, my sister and I were worried when we didn’t see a clearly labeled ‘shuttle stop’ at the Fairport Music fest. We hailed 2 delightful young men in a Jeep type vehicle parked by the Fest entrance and told them of our concern. One ran down the street to flag the shuttle he saw coming to ensure the driver didn’t miss us on the curb. These men were SO kind, friendly and eager to help 2 seniors in need! I am sorry I didn’t get their names for a personal thanks.
We recently had our [presidential candidate] sign stolen from our yard. If I recall, the Constitution says we have free speech, not if it only pertains to your view. We have had presidents that I did not care for, but gave the office the respect it deserved. Whatever happened to the saying to agree to disagree? Please, less hate and more kindness, understanding and love.
Rude and Dangerous Drivers
When my car suddenly became undrivable in the middle of the right lane on [local road] across from [local plaza] late Friday afternoon, I did my best to get as far onto the shoulder as possible. I turned my 4-ways flashers on, called my husband, and called 911 to report my car in the road because I was afraid of causing an accident. To the woman who slowed while driving down the far lane on the other side of the road, thank you for asking if I needed help. To everyone else, and especially those on my side of the road who didn’t slow down or stop and worse yet, sped up to swerve into the next lane even though you could so easily have caused an actual accident, shame on you. I hope you never find yourself in a similar situation one day. And to the police officer who asked if I’d run out of gas...since my car was still running, no I did not. The real cause: a snapped drive axle.

EXPLAINING PRECISION AGRICULTURE
What is precision agriculture? Precision agriculture (PA) is rooted in improving crop yields through the utilization of technology. PA is designed to help the agricultural sector maximize resources and improve yields and the quality of crops. That’s a critically important function as the world population continues to grow and the demand for food increases as a result.

TURN YOUR YARD INTO A VACATION-WORTHY OASIS
Install a pool: Pools are the ultimate spots to cool off on hot days.An elaborately shaped inground pool can blend in with the landscape and offer the ultimate hang-out zone. However, above-ground pools also serve the purpose and are more budget-friendly. Stock tank pools are popular among those who want minimal pool expenditure or have small spaces to work with. Stock tanks are metal vessels traditionally used as watering holes for livestock. They also can be “adult kiddie pools” when combined with some plumbing. Galvanized steel frames make them sturdy. With floats and other accessories, they can become the perfect oasis.

In 1892, the French newspaper La Siècle printed a game that was akin to Sudoku in that each row and column had to contain all the designated numbers, but unlike Sudoku, it involved numerals higher than 9 and engaged solvers’ mathematical skills, not their logic center.
Flash forward to 1979. Circumstantial evidence points to Indiana architect Howard Garns publishing a puzzle of his own invention (at that time named “Number Place”) in Dell Magazine that would become the game we now know as Sudoku.
IT KEEPS OUR MINDS SHARP
Actively participating in things that exercise our brains, especially those that involve math, is a good way to keep our minds sharp. Sudoku can increase focus and concentration as well as alleviate depression. Studies also suggest that puzzles and word games help prevent Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Who knew Sudoku could be so good for your health?

HOUSEBREAKING PUPPIES
How often a puppy will need to defecate depends on the food being fed and when meals are offered. The American Kennel Club says that most puppies will need to poop shortly after a meal, anywhere from 15 minutes to a few hours.
Puppies typically can hold urine a little longer overnight, but probably won’t be able to go the entire night without a potty break. Many pups can last around six hours from the last time they’ve gone out. An early-morning bathroom break will be needed, or consider penning the dog with puppy pads to catch the mess until the dog gains greater control over its bladder.

Fight Back Against Fleas
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My apartment has been infested with fleas all summer! I’m so frustrated. My two cats are suffering from hot spots and patchy fur because of the flea bites, and I’ve constantly got bites all over my legs. I don’t want to give my cats flea medicine because I heard it is dangerous to their health. What can I do to get rid of these fleas? -- Cara J. in Macon, Georgia
DEAR CARA: You’re going to have to plan an all-out assault on the flea infestation, and do it as soon as possible.
Talk to your veterinarian about the health risks and benefits of various flea and tick treatments. Ticks can give your cats heartworm and tapeworm. Your cats’ health is at greater risk right now from not doing anything than they would be from an effective treatment.
Next, get rid of the fleas and their eggs in your house with a complete cleaning and treatment. Take down the curtains and wash and dry them. Wash all your bedding and clothes. Dust from ceiling to floor. Vacuum the carpets thoroughly. Wash all mats and put out in the sun to dry. Clean every corner of the apartment. Clean fabric furniture with a steam cleaner. Flip the sofa and vacuum up all the dust bunnies and dirt.
Finally, with the cats sequestered in a safe room, treat the carpet to kill remaining fleas and their eggs. You can use a direct spray or an insecticide that is sprinkled into the carpet and vacuumed up. is all-out assault will nearly wipe out the fleas in your home. But they can (and will) come back. To keep them on the retreat, vacuum twice a week, wash your cats’ bedding weekly, and make sure the cats get their flea/tick/heartworm medication on schedule.
