HOW TO SUPPORT LOVED ONES WHO HAVE BREAST CANCER
Offer practical support. Cancer affects the body in a number of ways. Energy levels may wane and certain symptoms may arise. Side effects from treatments also can make it difficult to continue with daily tasks. So an offer to help with tasks associated with daily living, such as cooking meals, gardening, washing clothes, or cleaning up around the house, can be practical and much appreciated. Approach the individual and ask questions in pointed ways. Rather than, “What can I do to help?”, which may result in an answer of, “Nothing,” figure out a way to pitch in and then ask if that would be acceptable. This may be, “Would you like me to run to the supermarket for you today?”

As I write this, organizations from across the country are getting in place, setting up in strategic locations so that they can distribute aid, assist with rescues and help recover those lost to this storm. With many major highways cut, travel is nearly impossible in North Carolina, and very difficult elsewhere.
e best thing that you can do right now is to stay put. Instead of driving supplies to disaster areas, start a fundraising drive and donate cash to an organization that is actively helping pets and their owners. For example, the ASPCA is working with the Humane Society in Charlotte, North Carolina, to evacuate rescue and foster dogs from Asheville and surrounding areas. e Humane Society of the United States is doing likewise. Both organizations are helping owners with pet food and medical care, and providing shelter to animals without families.
Donating to these major organizations, or selecting a local shelter or rescue group in these areas to support now and in the months to come, will help immensely.

Endometrial Biopsy Indicated for Woman With Blood in Urine
DEAR DR. ROACH: About three months ago, I bled a bit while urinating. This was the first (and only) time in over 30 years that this happened since I went through menopause. An ultrasound was performed, and they found a mildly thickened endometrium (6.1 mm) with scattered cystic change and without focal lesion.
My gynecologist is suggesting an endometrial biopsy. I am concerned because I have no symptoms other than kidney stones. I’m due to see a urologist, but even with my kidney stones, I have no symptoms. I am 80 and concerned about anesthesia. Should I go ahead with the biopsy? - L.O.
ANSWER: A thickened endometrium is concerning for uterine cancer. The most common symptom of uterine cancer is abnormal uterine bleeding. This usually takes the form of red, pink or brown spotting. However, it sounds like you had blood in your urine, which is more concerning for kidney stones than uterine bleeding.
Your ultrasound is abnormal; 5 mm is the maximum thickness for a normal endometrium. Getting a biopsy is clearly the recommended procedure, as it gives guidance on the next steps. Still, your risk of uterine cancer is small. You do not have to proceed with the biopsy if you do not want to. An endometrial biopsy is an in-office procedure with minimal risk. My textbooks say there is minimal pain, but my patients tell me this isn’t always the case. You don’t have to receive anesthesia; you can take pain medication (such as naproxen), get a local anesthetic, or do both. I’ve had several patients who’ve requested a nerve block and were very happy with their decision. If the biopsy shows cancer of the endometrium, surgery is the preferred treatment, but radiation is also a possibility for some people.

COLD, PAINFUL FINGERS CAN MEAN A SERIOUS DISEASE
(NAPSI)—“Zombie Hands.” That’s what can happen to an estimated 5 to 10 percent of the population whentemperaturesstarttofall. In a typical case of Raynaud’s phenomenon, also known as Raynaud’s disease or syndrome, sufferers experience numbness and pain in their fingers, toes and other extremities. Fingers turn white, blue or red as the small blood vessels go into spasm within minutes of exposure to cold or stress, and they appear to be “dead”asbloodflowisconstricted.
Named for the French physician Maurice Raynaud, who first recognized the condition in 1862, it causesaninterruptionofbloodflow to the fingers, toes, nose or ears. There may be associated tingling, swelling or painful throbbing. The attacks may last from minutes to hours. In severe cases, the area may develop ulcerations and infections, which can lead to gangrene.
Raynaud’scanoccurasa“primary” disease—thatis, withnoassociated disorder—or as a “secondary” conditionrelatedtootherdiseases, such as scleroderma, lupus, and rheumatoidarthritis.
“Ninety percent of Raynaud’s sufferers don’t seek treatment and too many physicians pay short shrift to those who do,” says Lynn Wunderman, founder and chair of the Raynaud’s Association. “Treatment is important because some sufferers may have an underlying condition such as systemic scleroderma or lupus. Awareness of such a problem may allow for earlier medical intervention.” Simple blood tests can rule out the presence of antibodies associated with diseases that have Raynaud’s as a component.
What’s Being Done
Tohelp, theRaynaud’sAssociation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit health organization, launched a new and assertive campaign,”Don’t Turn a Cold Shoulder to Painful Fingers,” to urge those with the disorder— and their doctors—not to dismiss the pain that Raynaud’s sufferers endure, orthelifestyleadjustments they make to minimize exposure to coldorstress.
Although there is no known cure as yet, treatment options such as calcium channel blocker drugs have been clinically proven to alleviate symptoms by opening up the blood vessels so blood circulatesmorefreely.

What
Mulch refers to a material spread around or over a plant to enrich and/or insulate its soil. Many homeowners prefer mulch made of wood chips, which is both effective and readily available. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency notes that organic mulches, which include leaves, wood chips, compost or grass clippings, can be used by homeowners who want to develop eco-friendly landscapes.
FALL LAWN CARE TIPS
Aerate the turf. Aerating reduces soil compacting, facilitating the delivery of fertilizer and water to a lawn’s roots. While many homeowners, and particularly those who take pride in tending to their own lawns, can successfully aerate their own turf, it’s best to first have soil tested so you know which amendments to add after the ground has been aerated. Gardening centers and home improvement stores sell soil testing kits that measure the pH of soil, but homeowners who want to test for nutrients or heavy metals in their soil may need to send their samples to a lab for further testing.

I think the true gardener is a lover of his flowers, not a critic of them. I think the true gardener is the reverent servant of Nature, not her truculent, wife-beating master. * “If you have magazines or books that you are finished reading, perhaps you’d consider donating them to local seniors centers. You can look in the yellow pages to see if there are any near you. O en, the seniors are grateful to have new reading material.” -- T.C. in Florida
* Many more of us are using the reusable fabric shopping bags nowadays. A few cities have banned the use of plastic bags for retail shops. ese bags are much better for the environment, and can hold a lot more groceries per bag. One thing many people forget to do is wash them. You can take out the plastic insert (if there is one) and toss them in the washing machine. Hang to dry and you’re carrying around a much cleaner bag!

Hometown People
I love reading the Hometown Stories column each week. Learning about local people and organizations doing amazing things makes me thankful to live in such a great community. In an age of increasing technology and weaker personal connections, it's great to know our communities still thrive and bring people together. Thank you to everyone who has been featured on that page and I look forward to learning more about other great folks around town!
Why can’t things be easy?
I called [national fix it company] to repair a washing machine. First they had a tech come out that said we needed to order a part but that we could get it cheaper online. So we ordered it online and called the company to come back. They replaced the part and the machine was working for a short time and then stopped again. They came back again and said the same part was broken but that it wasn’t covered under warranty since we bought it online. So now we have to buy the same part again and it will take 3 weeks for it to arrive. UGH.
Dockworkers Strike
Greed has already begun. If there’s a shortage of items due to the strike, why do businesses get away with raising prices of items already in stock? Businesses already paid for the items that are staged in their stockrooms. A shortage is one thing, but price increases is price gouging.

milestone that speaks volumes about their enduring commitment to both books and the people who love them.
e story behind Books ETC began with a simple yet serendipitous inspiration. Maryanne, a real estate agent, and her brother, John, a retired teacher from Hilton, o en visited a cottage they owned near Deposit, NY. ere, they met Remo, a local who ran a bookstore out of his garage. eir frequent visits to Remo’s unique space planted the seed for what would become their own adventure. e idea of a bookstore that not only sold books but also fostered a sense of community was born, and thus, Books ETC came to life. “Just coming and sharing a cup of coffee is beneficial,” they say, describing the many groups people can join there for discussion and friendship.
As they approach their twentieth anniversary next year, Maryanne and John reflect on what has kept them going all these years. “We thought a bookstore would be a great brother and sister adventure.” And it has been, offering them both a meaningful way to engage with their community and share their love of literature.
While Books ETC doesn’t have formal employees, it thrives with the dedicated support of friends who volunteer their time. Jim Byron helps feed the cats, Kitty Barg assists with cleaning, Catherine Purtell helps overcome internet challenges, and Marie Cramer serves as a cheerleader, encouraging the duo every step of the way. is close-knit group embodies the spirit of community Books ETC is all about.
Books ETC is more than just a store; it’s a meeting place where ideas are exchanged, friendships are made, and conversation flows as freely as the coffee. e store hosts various discussion groups, bringing together minds from all walks of life. John says, “We love the people who come in to browse or to sit and join the community conversation. Our store has many conversation groups, and they are all exciting because of the tremendous intelligence of community people.”
e bookstore has become famous locally for fostering these gatherings, and over the years, it has developed what John lovingly refers to as a “great bookstore family.” It’s this sense of belonging and participation that keeps customers coming back.
Books ETC is also known for its diverse and engaging events, which reflect the eclectic interests of the community it serves. From psychic nights, led by their gi ed sister, Carol, to philosophy groups that encourage spirited discussion of ideas, there’s always something happening at the store. Other favorites include the Sketchers group, where creativity flows alongside light conversation, and Shakespeare Night, where participants read the Bard’s works aloud, bringing centuries-old texts to life in a new way.
In addition, Sound Journey sessions, offered by Chris Pedrone, provide a meditative experience through the soothing sounds of chimes, bowls,

and gongs, while poetry readings serve to nurture and encourage local writers. Music lovers aren’t le out, either, with Lamay and Reese offering performances of American and original music. eir events are an extension of the welcoming environment they’ve created. ey offer something for everyone.
As the landscape of the book industry shi s with the rise of electronic reading options, John and Maryanne hold firm in their love for physical books. “ ere has always been evolution in the print industry, and there always will be,” says John, reflecting on the pace of change. However, they both agree that while electronic materials may have their place, the tactile experience of holding a book is irreplaceable. “Personally, I love holding and touching the book,” John says, “So, although ancient technology, the book will remain for at least the next hundred years.”
Ultimately, Books ETC is about more than just selling books. It’s about creating a safe space for people to share their thoughts, ideas, and experiences. Whether through lively discussions, quiet moments over a cup of coffee, or the simple act of browsing, Books ETC offers something that can’t be found in the digital world: real human connection.
As they prepare for their twentieth year in business, Maryanne and John remain dedicated to their original vision, providing a space where the community can come together and where the love of books continues to thrive.

RELOCATING FOR A NEW JOB
Rent your first home. The Allied survey found that 31 percent of respondents indicated the most challenging part of relocating for a job was finding a home, while 29 percent felt acclimating to their new community was the most challenging aspect of their relocation. Adults who rent their first homes upon relocating can remove some of the pressure to find the perfect home, knowing full well their first home in their new community will be temporary. If possible, rent in a location that makes it easy to immerse yourself in your new community, which should make the adjustment easier. In addition, place items that are unnecessary for day-to-day life in storage. Having some of your possessions already packed should make your next move less stressful.
