Dinah Washington - A singer, Washington has been called “the most popular Black female recording artist of the 1950s.” She achieved success during a time of turmoil when the recording industry wasn’t necessarily friendly toward women or African American performers. Her work would help open up opportunities for other female Black singers.

ACCOUNT FOR A RISING COST OF LIVING
Look for a new job or fresh income streams. A rising cost of living is a concern for people from all walks of life, but it may be especially concerning for retirees or individuals with costs like childcare that can be hard to pare back. In such instances, individuals can look for new a job or fresh income streams. According to the Q3 2021 CNBC | Momentive Small Business Survey, 50 percent of small business owners say it’s gotten harder to find qualified people to hire compared to a year ago. And nearly one-third of survey respondents indicate they have open roles they have not been able to fill for at least three months. Individuals can explore local employment opportunities in an effort to find a new, more lucrative job that can help them combat a rising cost of living. Others who want to remain in their jobs can look for part-time work to supplement their existing income.

KITCHEN DESIGN WITH HEALTH AND ERGONOMICS IN MIND
(NAPSI)—Whether you’re among the 50 million Americans over 65 (90 percent of whom hope to continue to age at home), the 60 percent of families with children at home, have other ability issues or safety concerns or think you could someday, incorporating ergonomic elements that promote a seamless experience in the kitchen can make it a more comfortable place for everyone for many years to come.
Smart Sinks Given the amount of time spent in front of the sink, selecting one that considers your lifestyle and how you cook should be a priority. Details such as the durability and hygienic qualities of a sink’s material along with its style and size can impact efficiency and comfort.
For example, the latest sink from BLANCO, a manufacturer of finely crafted sinks, is designed to enhance workflow and accommodate all users. A first of its kind, the IKON® 33” Apron 1 3/4 Bowl with Low Divide sink is made with the brand’s exclusive SILGRANIT granite composite material. Easy to clean and scratch resistant, patented SILGRANIT material is a repellent, nonporous surface that eliminates the need to use harsh chemicals when cleaning.
The IKON sink also has a convenient low divide that sits just 5 1/2” from the sink bottom, making it easier to handle large pots and baking sheets while still dividing the sink into cleaning and prepping bowls. The apron front or farmhouse design, minimizes the need to lean over as much and so helps reduce strain.
Optional accessories further enhance comfort and workflow. A floating grid provides an extra level within the sink so handling hot and heavy pots can be safer and easier. A Floating Cutting Board that fits right on top of the sink instantly creates another workspace beyond the countertop.
Faucets Semi-professional and pull-down faucet models help make clean-up more efficient with their easy-to-maneuver design and powerful dual spray features. To make washing hands, food and dishes easier, consider a faucet with sensor technology such as the BLANCO SOLENTA™ Senso Semi-Professional Kitchen Faucet that lets you turn on the water with a wave of your hand. You don’t have to touch the faucet with your hands to get them clean—or if they’re full.
Other ways to enhance the ergonomics in your kitchen include:
• Use drawers instead of cabinets for storage so there’s less reaching
• Install different countertop heights to accommodate various users
• Raise the height of the dishwasher and oven if you can
• Select nonporous counter materials like quartz that are easy to keep clean
• Use LED lights for more brightness from less energy and that are cool to the touch
• Consider an easy-to-clean induction cooking surface—it can reduce energy costs, too

PAW’S CORNER
By Sam Marzotta
Be a lost pet ally
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My brother and I saw a dog that matched the photo of a lost dog on flyers around the neighborhood. We tried calling him, but he ran off. So we told our mom what happened, and she called the number on the flyer. I don’t know if the owners found the dog. We’re wondering if we did the right thing. Why did the dog run away? -- Brian and Sarah in Cincinnati
DEAR BRIAN AND SARAH: You did the right thing by telling your mom so that she could call the owners and tell them where you spotted the lost dog. Don’t feel bad about the dog running away: Lost dogs are o en shy of strangers. Some will not even come when their owners call. But, by telling them the location, the owners have a much better chance of recovering their dog.
Here’s how you can support owners who are searching for a lost pet:
-- Take a photo of a lost pet flyer with your smartphone. You can instantly refer back to it if you see a pet matching the description.
-- Don’t call or chase a dog or cat if you spot it. Contact the owner as soon as possible and give them the location where you spotted the pet.
-- If the pet approaches you calmly, try to keep them in place by petting or giving them treats, until you can put a leash on them and bring them to a safe containment area. Contact the owner or local shelter.
-- If the pet appears to be ill or injured, carefully approach and wrap them in an old blanket before attempting to pick them up.
-- If the pet is being aggressive, contact animal control.

DID YOU KNOW? Volunteering is a great way for individuals to strengthen their communities, but it also can be a unique way for individuals to improve their own overall happiness. A 2020 study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies examined 70,000 participants, each of whom received surveys that asked questions regarding their volunteering habits and mental health. The study found that, when compared to those who did not volunteer, people who had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings. The frequency of giving back to one’s community also may affect just how much volunteering affects mental health. Study participants who volunteered at least once per month rated their mental health even higher than those who volunteered but did so infrequently.

Accutane Isn’t To Blame for Affecting Woman’s Fertility
DEAR DR. ROACH: My daughter is in her 30s and has been experiencing infertility for several years. She and her husband have been tested, and the issue is her egg quality. She’s had several rounds of in vitro fertilization (IVF) with no success. At age 19, she was prescribed Accutane for her acne. She had to take a monthly pregnancy test in order to take this medication. I researched this medication at the time and was aware of the depression side effects. I was also aware that if a pregnancy occurred while taking this drug, it would have to be terminated. The situation was not a concern at the time. Now, years later, her fertility doctor says that she has eggs, but they are of poor quality. What is your opinion on this medication affecting fertility? I read that Accutane was banned in 2009. -- C.M.
Quality Sleep
To help you feel your best and sleep more soundly, try the following tips: Take a shower – About 90 minutes before bedtime, take a hot bath or shower. This will help to reduce muscle tension & accelerate sleep onset. Create an electronics curfew – The blue light from your favorite electronic devices interrupts your ability to relax and fall asleep. Don’t use your smartphone, tablet and other digital devices for one hour before bed. Stretch to relax – Stretching for 10-15 minutes before bed will help reduce muscle tension. Turn down noises and do some gentle stretches to relax the muscles and mind.
Set a wake-up schedule – Try to wake up at the same time each morning, even on the weekends. This will help keep your internal clock ticking correctly so you can fall asleep more quickly and sleep deeply.
Embrace natural light – About 15 minutes of sunlight each morning will help reset your circadian rhythm so you can rise more naturally and then sleep better in the evenings.
MINIMIZE DARK CIRCLES UNDER THE EYES
Racoon eyes may be a side effect of forgetting to remove mascara and other eye makeup before retiring for bed. In such instances, dark eye circles are easily remedied with cleaning pads. For those whose dark circles can’t be swept away with soap and water, dark, puffy eyes can be a cause for embarrassment or concern.
ANSWER: Isotretoin (Accutane) is the most effective treatment for acne, but it has the potential for serious side effects and can only be given after a thorough review of its risks.
I have to correct two misapprehensions: Although brandname Accutane was discontinued in 2009, generic isotretoin was not banned and still remains an extremely beneficial treatment that is safe when used appropriately. Secondly, there is no obligation while on this medicine to commit to a pregnancy termination.
Great care needs to be taken to prevent pregnancy, with repeatedly negative pregnancy tests before starting therapy, as well as two forms of birth control in any person who could get pregnant (unless they are abstinent). There is a high likelihood that a baby who is exposed to isotretoin will experience severe damage or be stillborn. If a pregnancy occurs while on isotretoin, the drug must immediately be stopped, and the person needs to be referred to an expert in reproductive toxicity. A pregnancy termination should be discussed, but the decision is always up to the patient (except where prohibited by law).
Although isotretoin can cause severe damage to the developing fetus if taken during pregnancy, a study showed that any effect on fertility was gone 18 months after treatment. There are many reasons why a woman can have difficulty getting pregnant, due to eggs that are less likely to get fertilized. Age is a major factor, but many genetic conditions, chemotherapy, radiation, viruses (including COVID-19), and autoimmune diseases are known causes.
I wish your daughter the best of luck. I have had several patients give up after several rounds of IVF, only to conceive a healthy baby naturally.

Lemons have been around forever but were first introduced to the New World in 1493 by Christopher Columbus. Since then, lemons became a staple in households, for medicinal uses, and were also seen at one point as a sign of wealth. There is more to a lemon than just the flavor and its acidic properties. Lemon juice is used in herbal remedies, it is a quick fix for many ailments, and is even used for preparing at-home beauty treatments.

FINDING THE RIGHT FENCING
Bamboo is a less traditional fencing option that may appeal to homeowners who want to do something that’s both different and eco-friendly. Bamboo grows naturally, which should appeal to homeowners who want their homes to have as little negative impact on the environment as possible. Bamboo provides ample privacy and comes in various styles. Homeowners should consult with a fencing specialist before choosing a style so they can be certain they choose the most climate-appropriate option.

Does Your Family Have a Fire Escape Plan? (Family Features) When a home fire occurs, you have very little time to get out. A working smoke alarm doubles your chances of survival, yet more than twenty percent of American homes are without them. Energizer and the International Association of Fire Chiefs teamed up to address this problem by providing vital fire safety information to families. Make a Plan Installing smoke alarms on every level of the home and developing a plan of escape can give your family precious minutes to get out and get to safety. Draw a floor plan of your home and sketch exit routes out of every room. Make sure you have a fire escape ladder long enough to reach the ground from upstairs rooms. MILLWORK CAN ADD APPEAL & A CLASSIC FEEL
Homeowners are discovering that architectural accents can go a long way toward improving both the look and value of their homes. When renovating a space, the term “millwork” may be mentioned by designers and contractors. While it might be a mystery to some, millwork can give rooms unique looks.
Millwork refers to items traditionally made from raw lumber in a sawmill. Examples of millwork include crown molding, base trims, door frames, window casings, chair rails, and paneling. Cabinets may also classify as millwork.

What a lovely feature of our part of the country… home grown veggies, eggs, flowers for sale or for free by the side of the road. Grabbed some gorgeous sunflowers, succulent zucchini, and candy-sweet tomatoes tonight in Sweden. Makes me proud to be living here. Thanks neighbors.
Wonderful family stopped to help
We cannot thank the family in the black SUV (Lincoln maybe) that helped push our car to the side of the road when it died in traffic on RT332 near Carmens Way. At 77 years old I started to push it and all the members of this family got out from their SUV and pushed us to the side to safety. The OC Sheriff came along and kept us all safe. Monday the 12th of August reset my thoughts of who would help others today. We had only moved here (Farmington) for a year and a half, and now we know that among the fleeting moments of our lives there are the people who would "jump to help.” I didn't get names, but I wanted to post this so that perhaps they will see this and know how thankful we are. God Bless you wonderful good Samaritan family.
Electric Scooters
Since when is it legal to drive an electric scooter down [street]? No, not just on the sidewalk but in front of moving vehicles. Then, with no helmet either. He was following a lady on a Vespa style scooter, both roughly doing 10 to 15 mph in a 30 zone. Oblivious to others, they just didn’t care. And then they went around the intersection using crosswalks, then back into the road. Where are the police? If any injury happens it should be NO fault to the drivers, regardless of the cause.
Yard/Garage Sales
If you’re selling an item that’s defective or with no apparent damage, have the decency or class to point it out before you have your hand out for the cash. I bought an item, not cheap either, and I later found that it had cracks inside that leaked. You had to know. You even said you’re selling it because you’re moving. Your neighbors said differently. I tried contacting you hoping you’d do the right thing or at least tell me if there’s anything else I should know before I order the replacement part. Nope, you’re not man or woman enough to do so. Sure, it’s on me for buying at a yard sale, but either way, I’ll see you at your next sale.
KKatherine Olmsted: A Wayne County Woman’s War Time Service
Local Author Pamela Lee Shares Olmsted’s story in her new book
BY SUZIE WELLS
atherine Olmsted stayed on her grandfather’s apple farm in Wallington, Wayne County every summer while growing up. She later attended Johns Hopkins School of Nursing in Baltimore, MD and graduated in 1912 as a Registered Nurse. Shortly therea er, the first World War broke out in southeastern Europe in July 1914. While working stateside as a nurse, Katherine signed up for the Red Cross Reserves.
In 1917, the Red Cross offered Katherine a nursing position with a unit of 12 doctors and 12 nurses headed for Romania. Katherine accepted the assignment and wrote weekly letters home during her deployment in Europe describing her wartime experience. Excerpts of Katherine’s letters are included in Pamela Lee’s new book, Miss Olmsted’s Nursing Adventures, along with her firsthand account of a dog fight between two airplanes overhead.
Her Red Cross unit was moved to a field hospital in Roman, a town in Romania near the war front. A er a few months, their work was disrupted when a siege surrounded the town and Katherine’s unit became trapped between the German Army and the Russian Revolution, so her medical team was forced to evacuate. Red Cross Headquarters in Washington D.C. had no idea what had become of the unit since there was no communication while they were on the run. It took 13 weeks for the unit to escape, first on a vintage wood-burning train and then on a war-torn minesweeper vessel.
A er she returned to the U.S., Katherine spoke of her war zone experiences to many groups across Wayne County. She worked hard to raise awareness of the difficult conditions in Europe, encouraged local folks to donate to the war effort, and encouraged young women to join the nursing ranks.
In 1921, Katherine accepted a promotion and entered a second tour of duty as Director for the League of Red Cross Societies in Europe. Her role in Europe was to establish multiple Red Cross societies in each country and train local nurses. Katherine made a huge impact during post-WWI reconstruction efforts as she traveled through 52 countries. Many leaders of these countries recognized her efforts and awarded her honorable decorations and citations for her work.
When Katherine resigned from the nursing profession in 1926, she enrolled at University of Sorbonne in Paris to earn a Cuisine Diploma at Le Cordon Bleu. She then headed home to the U.S. to start a new career as chef and restaurant owner in Sodus, NY. Her business, e Normandy Inn, was based upon the quaint homestead restaurants she visited in the Normandy region of France.
Katherine employed many local people and supported about 35 families during the Great Depression, a huge asset to the community. Katherine also volunteered in Wayne County as Case Supervisor for Emergency Relief, Wayne County Red Cross Emergency & Disaster Relief Chairman, Red Cross Home Nursing & Nutrition Teacher, and Minuteman under Civilian Protection during World War II.
Author Pamela Lee is originally from Wayne County, New York. She says, “Miss Olmsted’s adventures during her nursing career were exciting to research, and it is really an inspiring and interesting true story, which I hope readers will enjoy. I also believe Katherine Olmsted was a woman ahead of her time. She attended college and had a career before women even had the right to vote.”
Lee spent over a year thoroughly researching Olmsted’s life story and conducted many interviews with residents and prior restaurant
owners to tell her unique story. Katherine’s complete history begins with the prequel, Miss Olmsted’s Nursing Adventures, just released and ends with a previous publication, Miss Olmsted’s Normandy Inn, which was released in 2023. Both books contain historic pictures and French culinary recipes.
Books are available locally in Lyons at the Museum of Wayne County History and at Community Coffee & Café, in Sodus at Sodus Feeds & Artisan’s Co-op, and online at Amazon.com or Barnesandnoble.com.
Miss Olmsted’s service story is included in the Wayne County Museum of History Military Memories exhibit alongside other Wayne County residents who served from the Revolution through today. e museum exhibit runs through November 30th.
Ms. Lee kicks off her book tour in September with a presentation about Miss Olmsted at the Wayne County Historical Society Annual Dinner. For more information, visit www.WayneHistory.org. A book signing and free scavenger hunt based on the book Miss Olmsted’s Normandy Inn is scheduled at Sodus Feeds & Artisan’s Co-op (the former Normandy Inn property) on October 5th. For more information visit Sodus Feeds & Needs New on Facebook.

BUILD A BUDGET THAT WORKS FOR YOU
Determine your net income. The Bank of America notes that net income, also known as “take-home pay,” is the foundation of a budget. In the era of direct deposit, it can be easy for anyone to forget how much money they’re taking in each month. Salaried workers can determine their net income pretty quickly and easily, while workers who are paid by the hour and freelancers may need to do a little extra work and serve as their own bookkeepers as they try to calculate their net incomes.

HOST A SUCCESSFUL YARD SALE
Instead of giving away unwanted items that have gathered dust around the house, many people turn to garage and yard sales to transform their clutter into some extra money. Yard sales may not be a “get rich quick” scheme, but they present an environmentally friendly way to clean up a home. What’s more, they can be an ideal way to connect with neighbors and meet new people. Any money earned is an added bonus.
Statistics collecting resource Statistics Brain says that roughly 165,000 yard/garage sales take place in the United States each week. Nearly 700,000 people purchase something at those sales, leading to millions of dollars exchanging hands.
INFLUENTIAL JAZZ MUSICIANS
Scott Joplin (c. 1868-1917): Born into a musical family that included his mother, a singer and banjo player, and his father, a violist, Scott Joplin grew up in Texarkana, learning to play the guitar and later the piano at a very young age. By the time Joplin was a teenager, he was working as a traveling musician and eventually became the foremost composer of ragtime jazz. Biography.com notes that Joplin was a true student of music, studying at the George R. Smith College for Negroes in Missouri during the 1890s. Though one of history’s most celebrated jazz musicians, Joplin also composed ballets and operas.

their responsibilities at work and their obligations to their families. An inability to maintain that healthy balance can have adverse effects on men and women’s careers as well as the relationships they have with their families.
A 2015 survey of more than 2,000 adults commissioned by the workplace solution provider Workfront found that 38 percent of survey participants have missed life events because of a bad work-life balance. Access to technology that means work is never too far away might contribute to poor work-life balance, as 57 percent of respondents also acknowledged feeling that technology has ruined the definition of a family dinner.
Finding a healthy balance between work and life at home may require a concerted effort on the part of working parents, but there are ways to successfully juggle a career and family.
MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel
* On Aug. 23, 1902, pioneering cookbook author Fannie Farmer, who changed the way Americans prepare food, opens Miss Farmer’s School of Cookery in Boston. Farmer later educated medical professionals about the importance of proper nutrition for the sick.
