The top five items tonight on my local news channel were automobile crashes caused by slick road surfaces. And these weren’t just little fender benders, although there was one of those that happened in a store parking lot. These five crashes produced crushed cars, serious injuries and yes, in one case, death of the occupant of the vehicle ... all because of the condition of the roads.
And while I hate to think of myself as a coward, more and more there are things I just don’t want to risk.
I check the weather news for the temperature before I venture out by car. If it’s too cold (or will be by the time I get home), the roads could be slick. Black ice is hard to see but once your vehicle is on it, there’s no steering. Too cold and I just stay home.

During a recent storm we had yet another power outage. I keep thermometers in the fridge to keep track of how warm the temperature gets. For iffy items, I just don’t take the chance that they might have gone bad. While several sources say to be sure the foods have stayed below 40 degrees in the fridge, the CDC puts a specific time limit on it: four hours in a refrigerator without power. After that time, throw it out.
Instead of waiting for a warm day (which isn’t going to happen soon) to melt the ice and snow on my walk and driveway, I hire someone to clear it, and I just pay the cost, even though it’s not a welcome expense.
And in case you’ve never looked it up, it appears that over the age of 45 is when we’re advised not to shovel snow because of the risk of heart attack! For me, 45 was a very long time ago!

For many revelers, St. Patrick’s Day wouldn’t be the same without Guinness, which is among Ireland’s most famous exports. This world renowned and easily recognizable Irish dry stout traces its origins to 1758, when Arthur Guinness began creating it at his brewery at St. James’s Gate in Dublin. The black beer and its familiar white head instantly evoke images of Ireland for millions of people across the globe. While hosts outside of Ireland might not be able to find a keg of the black stuff for their Paddy’s Day party, it is widely available in cans.

Preowned Items Can Be Good For The Environment
Scout local garage sales: Garage sales are one way to bargain hunt and benefit the environment at the same time. Who knows what treasures you may be able to find at nearby garage sales? When shopping, set a spending limit and look for certain items you need, such as a bicycle or furniture. You may be surprised to find a quality item that costs much less than a brand new store-bought product.
STAY SAFE AND WARM DURING WINTER
Don’t forget footwear. Feet can easily succumb to cold temperatures when exercising outdoors, but you can employ the same strategy with your socks that you do with your layers. When choosing workout socks, avoid cotton socks that don’t wick moisture away from your feet. Acrylic can be more effective at wicking moisture away from your feet than cotton.

St. Patrick’s Day celebrants who are not of Irish descent and/or those who have never visited Ireland may not know it, but the live music they may hear when entering a pub on St. Patrick’s Day is an integral part of the fabric of Irish culture. An Irish Seisiún typically finds a group of musicians gathered in a pub to play traditional Irish music, oftentimes while seated at a table among their audience. While many pubs reserve stage areas for their musicians on St. Patrick’s Day, the spirit of seisiún is still present, as musicians often interact with the audience.
Sledding: Sledding may remind adults of their childhoods and turn kids’ snow days into fun afternoons they will never forget. Kids can seemingly ride their sleds and toboggans down snowy hills all day long, but even parents get a kick out of racing kids downhill or sharing a sled with their youngsters. While older kids can typically handle sleds on their own, parents should ride along with toddlers to prevent falls and handle steering duties. When sledding, keep a close eye for any signs that suggest kids might be getting too cold, such as shivering or clothes that are soaked through.

DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’m writing to ask if you can call attention to search and rescue dogs, who do heroic work every day -- from the recent fires in southern California to avalanche rescues and more. I just think they’re amazing. -- Carlo in Missoula, Montana
DEAR CARLO: You’re absolutely right: Search and rescue (SAR) dogs do amazing work nearly every day in the U.S. and around the world. They are unique, highly trained working dogs, often specializing in types of rescue or recovery.
SAR dogs must be energetic but even-tempered, as they often work long hours in chaotic environments. They must be confident, motivated and responsive to their handler. Most are selected when they’re puppies, after a period of observation and interaction, and not every SAR candidate makes the cut, even at this early stage. Training can take at least two years, and most SAR dogs retire before they’re 9 or 10 years old, as the physical requirements can be demanding.
There are two types of SAR dogs: air-scenting and trailing. An airscenting dog detects and follows airborne or wind-borne scents over a large area (up to 150 acres or a quarter mile in some instances) and follows them as close to the source as possible; cadaver dogs are one example. They frequently work off-lead and return to their handler to lead them to the source. A trailing dog can discern a specific scent, such as that of a missing person, and follow the exact track of that scent; they usually work on-lead with the handler, proceeding more slowly.
These dogs are so effective that they’re used in 70% of rescue missions worldwide, entering dangerous areas ahead of human teams to pinpoint survivors.
So, hats off to search and rescue dogs! And to their dedicated trainers and handlers.

Arguably one of the most challenging - and often frustrating - components about puppyhood is training the dog to use the outdoors for bathroom needs. It’s easy to underestimate the time involved in housebreaking a puppy. The Humane Society of America says puppies typically can control their bladders for one hour for every month of age. That means if the dog is three months old, he can hold it for about three hours.

There is a privacy about it which no other season gives you.... In spring, summer and fall people sort of have an open season on each other; only in the winter, in the country, can you have longer, quiet stretches when you can savor belonging to yourself.

Canandaigua Middle School’s drama department brought a touch of Disney magic to the stage this February with their Mary Poppins Jr. Under the direction of Taylor Day, who has led CMS productions for eight years, the show captivated audiences with its timeless story, classic songs, and a spectacular flying effect that awed audiences.
Day, a West Irondequoit native, discovered her passion for theater in youth, participating in school productions from seventh through twel h grade, where she says, “I always loved the rehearsal process, bonding with castmates, trying on costumes, and everything that goes into making a show beautiful and successful.”
Pursuing her love for music, Day earned a degree in Music Education and Vocal Performance from Ithaca College and a Master’s in Music Education from Nazareth University. Her experience performing in a cappella groups, operas, and musical theater in college—including an opera study program at the International Performing Arts Institute in Germany— has shaped her ability to foster young talent at Canandaigua Middle School.
“Being on the stage is something I love,” she says, “but fostering the love of theater in students is my goal. Watching them piece together a story with guidance and then take their own risks [and] grow in confidence through stage presence” are her favorite parts of her role, adding, “I love when a big dance number and scene come together for the first time and you can see on the kids’ faces ‘We got it!’”
e decision to stage Mary Poppins Jr. followed last year’s successful production of Beauty and the Beast. Day and her team wanted to keep the momentum going with another Disney classic, one filled with beloved songs and the opportunity for exciting stage effects. “ ere are so many fun magical things you can do with Mary Poppins, so we wanted to give that a try as well,” Day explains.
One of the most thrilling aspects of this year’s show is the addition of professional flying effects, courtesy of On the Fly Productions. “We hired a company to install and train us on how to fly Mary Poppins,” Day says. Poppins was flown in during the opening scene to meet the Banks children and again throughout the second half, including when she saves Michael’s kite and in the final scene before bows.” e actors playing Mary Poppins embraced the challenge, executing their aerial performances with grace and confidence, Day says.
Behind the scenes, a dedicated crew of students and staff worked tirelessly to bring Mary Poppins Jr. to life. Tech Director Jerry Smith played a crucial role in designing and building the set, programming sound and lights, and even rigging up three cameras to allow for a recorded version of the show. “He gets everything all set up and then allows for the show to be entirely studentrun,” Day says. While Smith was backstage operating the fly system, students managed the lighting and sound, ensuring smooth scene transitions and a polished final production. Days adds, “ e tech crew did an outstanding job!”
Day also credits her co-director, Katie Reaves, for helping students connect with their characters. “Once they feel connected to the role they are playing and feel like they know what their character’s choices would be in certain moments, the kids come alive through body language and improv! It is so fun to see.”
eater rives in Canandaigua
eater is an integral part of Canandaigua’s arts culture, and Day is proud of the support the community provides. “We are very lucky in Canandaigua that the community is so supportive of the arts and theater programs,” she says. High school performers from Canandaigua Academy also encourage younger students. “Academy performers pick two shows to come see and provide lots of cheers, laughs, and support to all of the middle school performers. ey are the first ones standing for bows and they stand in the atrium cheering on every performer who comes out of the dressing room.”
Canandaigua students also benefit from access to the greater Rochester theater scene, with professional venues like GEVA eatre, Rochester Broadway eater League, and OFC Creations offering inspiration and opportunities beyond the classroom.
For those seeking more student performances, Canandaigua Academy Players stage Bye Bye Birdie starting March 7. Day says, “So many students involved in the Academy shows started performing in sixth grade in the middle school, and we love to go watch them shine on the bigger stage!”
With a talented cast, dedicated crew, and an enthusiastic community behind them, Canandaigua School’s productions are sure to be magical experiences for all who attend.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I have two bird feeders off my back deck. They hang from tall poles as a vain attempt to keep squirrels from eating all of the birdseed! But to refill them, I must take them down and handle them, and I recently wondered if I might be exposing myself to the new bird flu.
Is there any information about this possibility? Any possible transmission of the virus might have occurred to other bird lovers, too. --
J.F.
ANSWER: The songbirds you are attracting to your feeders, such as cardinals, sparrows and woodpeckers, are not likely to be infected with avian influenza (“bird flu”). It generally infects waterfowl such as gulls and ducks.
X-rays, Comprehensive Exam) - Save $258 Expires 3/31/25 *Cannot be combined with insurance, discounts, or any other savings*
Most experts do not recommend taking down your feeders but do recommend a periodic cleaning of feeders and baths with a diluted bleach (10%) solution. You should wash your hands after refilling your feeders.
Those who keep poultry such as chickens, ducks, geese or turkeys (which may also be infected by bird flu) should not use feeders or baths that attract wild birds.
DEAR DR. ROACH: I see commercials about different kinds of pillows, asserting that they are better for you medically in various ways, especially with enhancing your sleep experience. This implies to me that conventional pillows can be bad for you. Is any of this true? -- W.R.G
ANSWER: No, I wouldn’t say that conventional pillows are bad for you. However, there is evidence that in people with chronic neck pain, pillows made with latex or springs have been shown to reduce neck pain, waking symptoms and disability. They also enhance the satisfaction that people have with their pillows, but studies taken as an aggregate did not show an improvement in sleep quality. It seems that the height and composition of the pillow can affect the alignment of your neck bones.
If you aren’t having any problems, there is no reason to change. But if you wake up with a sore neck or have chronic neck pain, a special pillow might help, although I doubt there is one pillow that is right for everybody.

Parents of young children know that getting kids to brush their teeth can sometimes feel like pulling teeth. Kids have a long history of disliking dental care, which can frustrate parents who know the importance and long-lasting benefits of proper dental hygiene.
While many youngsters may never excitedly run to the bathroom to brush their teeth, parents can try various approaches to get kids to embrace proper dental care.
Start early. Parents should not hesitate to begin cleaning kids’ teeth once the first tooth appears. The earlier dental care is part of a child’s routine, the more likely he or she is to accept it as part of everyday life. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends using a softbristled brush with a small head. Ideally, use a toothbrush designed for infants, brushing teeth once per day at bedtime. The AAPD advises taking kids to visit a pediatric dentist when the first tooth appears, or no later than the child’s first birthday.
Make it a group effort. Young children love to imitate their parents’ actions and behaviors, and moms and dads can use that adoration to their advantage when trying to get kids to brush their teeth. Brush teeth together as a family, making it seem like an enjoyable twice-daily activity. Get down on kids’ level and show them how to brush. If kids are resistant, engage them in conversation while brushing so they don’t even realize they’re cleaning away.
Involve kids in choosing their dental care products. While parents should be mindful of the type of toothbrush their children use, always sticking with products recommended by their child’s pediatric dentist, let youngsters choose their toothbrush and toothpaste. Kids might prefer a particular flavor of toothpaste, and a colorful toothbrush with a favorite film or television character might make kids more enthusiastic and less fussy about brushing.
Compliment kids after positive dental appointments. When pediatric dentist appointments go well, compliment children and express your pride in them for taking dental hygiene as seriously as they do.

Don’t allow your home to fall into disrepair. Even if your energy bills are not on the rise, inspect windows and doors to make sure they are closing tightly, as over time such seemingly minor problems can add up to substantial energy loss. Don’t forget to clean gutters and downspouts, removing debris that can add up and lead to water damage that may ultimately compromise the effectiveness of

Decide how big an impact you want to make. Are you looking for color overload or just a small focal point of vivid color? Remember, using bold color doesn’t mean every wall must be lathered in that hue. Instead, select one wall to serve as an accent point and use that spot as your bold color display. Otherwise, rely on bold colors to dress up otherwise mundane areas, such as the back wall of a cupboard or moldings and trim.
Now widely depicted as tiny, bearded and mischievous men clad in coats and hats, leprechauns have been traced to ancient Ireland. The precise etymology of the word “leprechaun” is unknown, though many scholars believe the word we use today is derived from the old Irish “Lú Chorpain,” which means “small body.” Some scholars point to the 8th century word “luchorpán,” meaning “sprite” or “pygmy,” as the origins of the word leprechaun. Another word, “lubrican,” which first appeared in the English language in a 1604 play written by Thomas Middleton and Thomas Dekker, also has been linked to the modern word leprechaun.

Chinch bugs: The experts at BobVila.com report that chinch bugs are not necessarily problematic when their populations are limited to around 10 to 15 bugs per square foot of lawn. In such instances, chinch bug populations are generally controlled by ants and ladybugs. However, extreme heat and drought, problems that have plagued various regions in North America in recent years, reduce the populations of bugs that feed on chinch bugs, thus increasing the population of these unwanted guests that feed on grass. GardenTech® indicates that damage from chinch bugs is most visible between June and September. That damage begins with grass taking on a purple tinge before it turns yellow and then brown after wilting.

STORM SURVIVAL 101: PREPARE YOURSELF NOW
With the country deep in the throes of winter weather, and hurricane season fast approaching, experts are reminding homeowners that having a plan in place can be the difference between survival and awaiting help from others. Coming on the heels of some of the worst string of natural disasters this nation has ever known (think winter storms Nemo, Dion, Gemini or Hurricanes Irene and Sandy, and of course Katrina), these forces of Mother Nature highlight the importance of being prepared.

My small dog got out. She was just a puppy in training still. As I ran down the street in Newark, an officer stopped and helped me save her. I would like to thank him again for going out of his way to help.
On Jan. 24th, I lost my pet, Marlee. I went to get a mate to be with my other furry friend. I called several rescue shelters and foster homes. No one happened to have a lap furry friend. I called the animal shelter in Batavia and I’m so happy I found you! I want to give a hug and love to Linda and Brenda, two volunteers there. They said to come and see what they have. They had what I wanted. These people were so great and understanding and awesome! We just love our new furry friend, whose name is now Dallas. Great job to all the staff. I am very pleased with the outcome. God bless you all. Thanks again!
Learn from my experience! I recently brought my two cats into a local Vet for their 3-year Rabies and FVRCP shots. When I called for the appt I specifically said, "shots only, that's all I can afford.” Well, much to my surprise when I was done, I received an invoice for $480! Yes, that's FOUR HUNDRED EIGHTY DOLLARS! I was not only charged for the shots, but the bill also included a $87.50 "Wellness Visit" for each kitty! I was beyond shocked. They only weighed my cats and asked me questions-OK? So, after the fact I called two other local Vets and here is the comparison pricing I received: 3-Year Rabies I was charged $118 for each kitty, while for the other 2 two Vets I called their pricing was $40/$50. Wellness Visit I was charged $87.50 for each kitty; other two Vets I called their pricing $50/$60. FVRCP I didn't question as it was a low cost. Please learn from my experience and remember this $480 bill I received and be sure to comparison shop your local Vets. Not all are created equal.
Please, let’s respect others and keep pets out of the shopping carts. Very unsanitary!
Thank you.
