SEPTIC TANK PUMPING GLOBAL NEW YEAR’S TRADITIONS
Laurel E. Grundman (Straight) December 27, 2020
Grapes are a hallmark of Spanish New Year’s celebrations. Throughout Spain, revelers gobble a grape per second as they count down the last 12 seconds of the year. Each grape corresponds to good luck for the 12 months of the new year.
Honeoye: At age 82, Laurel passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Sunday, December 27, 2020 at her home in Honeoye. She was born in Rochester, NY to the late John and Libbie Straight. Survived by her beloved husband of 40 years, Harold Grundman; her children, Jeff (Becky) Briggs, Don (Linda) Briggs, Ken (Becky) Briggs, Cindi (Garth) Thomas, Karen Stephens, Nancy Titus, John (Melissa) Miles; her 20 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren, along with several nieces, nephews and friends. She is predeceased by her siblings, John Straight, Robert Straight, Wallace Straight and Louise Straight. Laurel will be greatly missed.

As a mother of seven children, Laurel’s home was always filled with much love and affection. She would spend many of her days at her sewing machine creating beautiful pillows and quilts. She was gifted with both poetry and music, and she’d sing silly songs to her children and grandchildren to make them laugh. Everything in life would remind her of a song. Laurel also loved nature: the trees and the flowers, and most particularly pretty yellow daffodils.
Offer valid December 15, 2020 – March 1, 2021
Friends and family are invited to call on Thursday, January 7th, from 2-5pm at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home, 8624 Main Street, Honeoye, where Laurel’s Memorial Service will take place at 11am on Friday, January 8th. A committal service will take place in the future at Richmond Center Cemetery on Richmond Center Road, Honeoye, NY. Memorial Contributions may be made to The Arbor Day Foundation, 211 N. 12th Street, Lincoln, NE 68508 or https://shop.arborday.org/donations.

A Big Thanks to Anthony at Hamlin Post Office I ordered stamps online, and somehow, I missed that they were going to be delivered to the same address as mine, but to Rochester, rather than to my correct city. Anthony, the postmaster in Hamlin, got up with me the following day. He was so kind and considerate. Immediately, he remedied my problem. He said that he would replace all four books of stamps. How kind! Within minutes of our phone conversation, our doorbell rings, and low and behold, it is Anthony personally delivering them to my home. I am so thankful that there are still kind and considerate people in the world. Sad to say, the people who got my four books of stamps, as of yet, have made no attempt to return what does not belong to them.

Brilliant books Just opened a gift that we got for our grandkids: an encyclopedia. Remember those? And it is wonderful! Beautifully illustrated with a terrific variety of interesting subjects and fun to read, and published by Britannica who has a rich history in encyclopedias. And the beauty of such a resource is that it pulls you into its pages and information more so than any website ever could. The power of the printed page is still first when it comes to recall and exposure to more ideas than a static computer screen. Give your brain a break. Turn off the internet and pick up a book!
Merry Christmas! On December 21st, my estranged daughter and I decided to meet for breakfast at Patty’s Place in Canandaigua. While we were there, someone bought our breakfast for us. I would like to thank that person. He or she has no idea how much that meant to me as I am a single mom trying to hold things together. I was moved literally to tears. It was an important day for my daughter and I as we are trying to mend fences, and this person added to this important breakfast and reminded both of us to give. Thank you so much! You are a blessing in this world.
HOW TO SUCCEED WITH YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION
Start the Job Right!
Expect setbacks. Just like it’s important to be patient, it’s equally important to recognize there will be setbacks. Men and women who resolve to save more money and have set specific monthly savings goals should not allow one monthly shortfall to derail all of their efforts. An unforeseen expense such as an automotive or home repair might compromise your ability to meet your monthly savings goal. Such setbacks are inevitable regardless of your resolution, so don’t be discouraged when they happen. Just commit to getting back on track in time to meet your next goal.

Santa Mobile On Monday, December 21, the Riga Recreation “Santa Mobile” took flight over the roads of Churchville/Riga in search of unique and tastefully decorated homes in the area. Santa was accompanied by his trusty elves and others to choose the 14 homes and then give them “Secret Santa” gift cards purchased from local businesses. We were greeted by many surprised smiles and the cards were given to residents in a socially distant manner. (Yes, Santa had his mask on!) Thanks to Bailey, Brooke, Lily, Sue, Ryan, and Matt for all their help to bring precious smiles to the faces of the homeowners. Merry Christmas, Dave, Riga Recreation Supervisor

CELEBRATE SAFELY THIS NEW YEAR’S EVE Arrange for transportation. If you need a car to get around on New Year’s Eve and plan to drink alcohol, arrange for someone else to do your driving for you. Groups of friends should choose someone to be their designated driver or pool their money and hire a taxi or bus service for the night so no one who’s been drinking gets behind the wheel. The NHTSA even offers a free app called SaferRide that is compatible with Apple and Android devices and enables users to call a taxi or a friend to be picked up. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

SOUND CONTROL KEY TO A CALM, RELAXING HOME Inside and out, life can be loud. Retreat from the hustle and bustle of the world by making your home, or specific rooms within it, a calm, relaxing sanctuary. There’s a room in every house that could benefit from greater sound control, whether it’s a home theater, music room, studio, home office, children’s play room, bathroom, mechanical, or laundry room. Insulating properly will allow you to really enjoy your home that much more and achieve a higher level of comfort. Experts suggest selecting a dense insulation with a non-directional fiber structure to combat airborne noise such as music, speech and foot traffic. This insulation material creates an excellent sound barrier that effectively absorbs noise and reduces the transfer of sound waves from one room to another. Its resistance to fire is an added benefit that also adds passive fire protection to your home, a type of fire precaution that is part of the core of the building and will help control fire by limiting its spread. Certain sound dampening measures, such as carpeting, might also help alleviate echo and reverberation, as will acoustic panels that prevent sound reflections throughout a room. With basic DIY skills, you can simply and affordably construct your own acoustic panels using a stone wool rigid board which is effective at reducing the intensity and propagation of noise.

Host responsibly. Even people who don’t intend to leave their homes can take steps to make New Year’s Eve safer for everyone. If you’re hosting a party at home, do so responsibly, making sure none of your guests overindulge and making the party less about drinking and more about having fun. Shift the focus from toasting drinks to games and activities that don’t include alcohol. Make sure to have plenty of food and nonalcoholic beverages on hand and encourage people who are drinking to eat full meals and drink water throughout the night. People who fill up on food and water during the party may feel full, which may discourage them from having extra drinks. While many people will expect to drink alcohol on New Year’s Eve, don’t stock up on too much alcohol, the availability of which may encourage guests to overindulge. Hosts also should keep the phone numbers of local taxi services handy just in case some guests cannot drive themselves home safely.

Undereye bags can cause shadows to form and increase the appearance of dark circles. To remedy this, try to reduce fluid pooling in the face. Sleep elevated on a few pillows so that fluid flows away from the eyes. Reduce consumption of alcohol and salty foods, which can exacerbate fluid retention. Cool compresses can be used to massage fluid gently away from the eyes as well.

WHAT OTHERS ARE DOING, HOW YOU CAN HELP
TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
(NAPSI)—The global pandemic brought home to many people just how interconnected the world has become. This is true about the need to protect the environment, as well.
Proper Technique Is Key to Accurate BP Reading --DEAR DR. ROACH: I have always read that when you are having your blood pressure taken, your arm should be elevated above your heart. When mine is taken this way, it is normal, around 120/70. When I go to the doctor, my blood pressure is taken with my arm hanging at my side. I often get a much higher reading taken this way, say, 140/90. Is there a correct way to take it, and does it affect the reading? My doctor said the position doesn’t matter and wants to prescribe medication. -- U.P. ANSWER: When taking the blood pressure, the goal is to approximate the blood pressure in the heart. That means that the blood pressure cuff should be at the level of the heart. If the blood pressure cuff is above the heart, then the blood pressure reading will be artificially low. If the blood pressure cuff is dangling below the level of the heart, the reading will be high. For every 10 cm (about 4 inches) above the heart, the blood pressure will be about 7 mm of mercury too low. If I stretch out my arm as high as I can above my heart, I can get it about 30 cm higher than my heart, which would be enough to explain the difference between the 140/90 and 120/70 you have observed. However, for most people when sitting up straight, a properly placed cuff on the arm will approximate the same level as the heart. Although you are right the position matters, it sounds like the doctor’s office is taking the reading correctly. I should also note that the feet should be resting on the floor, not dangling, which can artificially raise the blood pressure. The arm should be supported while taking the blood pressure. I recommend taking the blood pressure three times and using the average. Given how important blood pressure is, correct technique is essential in order to properly recommend who should get blood pressure treatment. Evidence is increasing that a 24-hour home blood pressure device is more accurate at determining who might need medication, especially in suspected white coat hypertension, where the readings are artificially high just because a person is in the office (even if they don’t feel nervous). ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2020 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

According to the National Institutes of Health, the way to preserve human health is by maintaining the environment because polluted air, water and land encourages such sicknesses as asthma and lead poisoning, while global warming fosters the spread of disease. Fortunately, throughout the country, efforts large and small are helping to resolve this. What’s Being Done For example, one major American corporation with a long, proud history of environmental sustainability and a strong track record of action and success has raised the bar on its environmental commitments and accelerated the progress of short- and long-term goals that meet or exceed environmental regulations. As Marc Bitzer, Chairman and CEO of Whirlpool Corporation put it. “As we continue to navigate the impact of COVID-19, the health and safety of our employees and communities remain our priority. We strongly believe that our sustainability efforts are as important now as ever. These efforts are guided by a clear mission to earn trust and create demand while in constant pursuit of improving life at home.” To that end, the company has: • Reduced its absolute plant emissions by 18% by investing in efficiency and renewable energy;

What You Can Do For your part, you can help the environment these four ways: 1.Get your car a tune-up. Properly maintained vehicles get better gas mileage and emit fewer pollutants. 2.Plant a tree. Trees absorb carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas. 3.Run the dishwasher and clothes washer only when you have full loads. 4.Don’t let the water run while you shave or brush your teeth. Hearts for the Homeless Celebrates 30 Years on Christmas Eve BY AMANDA DUDEK
A
t some point, you have probably dropped gently used clothing into one of those little red donation bins found across Western New York and reaching nearly to Syracuse. Perhaps like me, you are simply glad your clothing, shoes, and blankets will be put to good use, but do you know where your donated items are going? You might be surprised! The red donation boxes, over 400 of them, all belong to Hearts for the Homeless (Hearts), a nonprofit organization on Tonawanda Street in Buffalo. Hearts’ stated mission is to be a mobile soup kitchen that feeds the poor and homeless on the street, characterized by a profound spiritual motivation. In doing so, Hearts offers nourishing food, as well as winter clothing, pertinent information regarding area services, companionship, and hope for the future. Hearts was founded in 1990 on Christmas Eve as an outreach and feeding program, including a motor home which was the beginnings of its Mobile Soup Kitchen outreach. The ministry grew quickly, adding its reading program in 1991 and its first thrift store in 1996. Ultimately, Hearts would open two more thrift stores before merging them all into a larger one, Hearts Thrift Shop, in 1999 at its present location. Hearts Thrift Shop serves a dual purpose. Not only does it provide the community with gently used, quality clothing along with personal care items, toiletries, jewelry, toys, housewares, games, and free books, but also, after expenses, it uses all proceeds from Hearts Thrift Shop to support the operation of its Mobile Soup Kitchen and Hearts Harvest Pantry and Café. This is one of the primary ways that Hearts for the Homeless is able to fund its outreach. Hearts’ impact has become quite extensive. The nonprofit served over 13,000 of Buffalo’s poor and homeless in 2019 and are on track to serve even more of those in need this year. With more people out of work due to the coronavirus, Hearts for the Homeless and its outreach have been more critical than ever before. Christmastime is always one of the busiest times of the year for Hearts, but this year, it is even more special. On Christmas Eve, 2020, Hearts for the Homeless celebrated its 30th anniversary. Not only did they serve Buffalo’s poor and homeless at their annual Christmas Eve dinner, but they also continued their tradition of Hearts for the Homeless Red Donation Bins can be playing Santa. An found across Upstate New York from Buffalo excerpt from their almost to Syracuse! newsletter explains.

In Buffalo, many of those in need enjoy Christmas Eve Dinner, courtesy of Hearts for the Homeless & the Buffalo Dream Center!
All through the Christmas season, the phones and doorbells continuously ring with people who want to make an impact on those who are underprivileged. Several churches and the Boy Scouts donate toys and gifts to be handed out to needy families via our thrift shop. The surprise on the faces of parents that were coming in with hope to buy a thrift item to put under the tree is that of immeasurable joy when they are asked if they would like to pick out brand new gifts at no charge! This is a favorite time for our thrift shop staff. Hearts for the Homeless plans to go on serving the Buffalo community while continuing to pursue its dream of opening a Harvest Pantry & Café as yet another way to serve those in need while raising funds to continue their ministry. Donating gently used clothing, shoes, and household items allows many of us to be a small part of the incredible work they do. The next time you put a bag in one of these bins, know that this local effort truly is helping those in need.
“Hope for the future!”

• Keep your tires ‘aired up’: For every 10 degree Fahrenheit change in outside tem perature, your tire’s inflation pressure w ill change by about 1 pound per square inch (psi). Consider a Low -Viscosity Oil in the Winter
• Check your tread to beat the snow : Worn or insufficient tread can cause skidding during the w inter season, so it is im portant to m ake sure your tires are ready for the w inter conditions before hitting the road. A quick w ay to do this is to check your tires’ tread depth indicators. Tread depth indicators are sm all raised bars that run in-betw een a tire’s tread blocks. When a tire’s tread is w orn dow n to these indicator bars, it’s tim e to change to a new set of tires.

The ow ner’s m anual of your vehicle m ay recom m end you use a low er viscosity m otor oil to counter the dip in tem perature that’s synonym ous w ith w inter. When the tem peratures outside fall, the oil inside your vehicle thickens, and a thicker oil w on’t circulate through the engine as w ell. This can cause engine problem s because the engine w on’t be adequately lubricated. A low -viscosity oil is naturally thinner, so it m ay im prove lubrication throughout the w inter. SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles
The Best You Can Do A show of hands, please. Is anybody else getting worn out by the current state of our lives? Is there anything we can do about it? All I wanted was a package of socks. That shouldn’t be hard. In the past, once a year or so, I’d stroll into the local store, grab a package off the shelf (especially happy when I found a bonus pack with 2 extra pairs in it), pay for it and walk out. And now? Now I can’t find them anywhere. I don’t dare walk into stores just to wander around, so I’m left to do my hunt on the internet. These particular socks are nowhere to be found ... except for the ones at three times the price on Amazon. Then there was the phone call from a neighbor, in the middle of my hunt, describing a new family panic. A family member is undergoing serious medical treatment. They just learned that his nurse tested positive for COVID. Is anyone else tired of the need for constant vigilance because of COVID? The inability to acquire basic goods and sometimes food? The constant sad stories of seniors who are in rehab centers who haven’t had visitors in months? That’s probably what breaks my heart the most, all those lonely seniors in nursing homes or retirement centers. I can’t do anything about the state of the world, but I can do this: Over the next week I’m going to send individual notes and cards to the residents of a local nursing home. I got all their first names and last initials from the facility director, and I’ve ordered a big box of miscellaneous greeting cards. Each one will get a note and a cheery card from me. Maybe it will help brighten their day for a few minutes. It’s the best I can do. c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

BOWL GAMES AND NEW YEAR’S DAY New Year’s Day is rife with tradition. Perhaps no such tradition is more exciting for fans of college football than the handful of New Year’s Day bowl games featuring some of the sport’s best teams. New Year’s Day bowl games can trace their origins back to the 19th century. According to History.com, on January 1, 1890, members of the Valley Hunt Club in Southern California paraded through the streets of Pasadena, California, engaging in various contests, including tug-of-war. While no collegians competed on the gridiron that day, the parade served as a precursor to the Tournament of Roses Parade, which immediately proceeded athletic contests that included polo matches and greasedpig catching. In 1901, the president of the parade, seeking to gain publicity for the town of Pasadena and its floral festival, sought to stage a sporting event that might attract more interest than pig-catching and polo. Festival organizers ultimately chose college football, deciding to initiate a matchup between a team representing the western United States and the eastern United States. On January 1, 1902, the football teams from the University of Michigan and Stanford University battled in the inaugural East-West football game. Michigan, which had not allowed a point all season long, steamrolled its way to a 49-0 victory. In fact, the game’s lack of competitiveness temporarily nixed plans for an annual New Year’s Day game, which was not played again until 1916, when Washington State University defeated Brown University 140. Interest in the game continued to grow from there on out, and in 1923, the game was moved to a large stadium known as the Rose Bowl. The game itself soon adopted the name of that stadium, and it retains that name today. Thanks to fan interest in the New Year’s Day game, other New Year’s bowl games soon followed, and continue to entertain college football fans every January 1.

My name is
Eggnog I am an 8-month-old Easter Egger. I may be a mix breed but I’m the best in the flock because I lay beautiful colored eggs like blue and green! I enjoy showing off each morning with my egg song, yes, I sing when I lay an egg! Whilst not strictly a purebred, the Easter Egger has become a backyard favorite across America. With its cute looks and vibrant personality what’s not to like? They are known as Easter Eggers because they can lay a wide variety of egg colors and their plumage can also be various colors. Generally, in the US an Easter Egger is a bird that is understood to carry the blue egg laying gene from its parent stock (the Araucana or Ameraucana).

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
New Year’s Resolutions for Happy, Healthy Pets --DEAR READERS: As we close out one of the most tumultuous and stressful years of our lives, let’s look back and remember how much peace and joy our pets gave to us. When nothing else in the world seemed certain, we could count on our pets to offer unconditional love. That’s why, as we look forward to a new year and new hopes, we must honor and protect our best friends. Let’s resolve to: 1. Spend more time with our pets. Dogs and cats need regular attention and love. While we’re spending more time at home, it’s a perfect time to play with our pets, to add an extra training session and more walks into the routine. 2. Get pets the best care possible. Schedule that routine veterinary visit, and get your pets caught up on their vaccinations. A physical can head off serious illnesses. 3. Include your pets in your will. We don’t like to think about it, but end-of-life planning is important, and our pets need to be part of that planning. 4. Build lasting memories. Take as many photos with your pets as you can. Make scrapbooks that you can look through years from now to remember when your puppy was young, or to memorialize a beloved turtle, hamster, cat or dog. 5. Help other pet owners. So many people are silently struggling right now: either from job loss, ill health, grief or depression. They may not be able to take care of their pets as well as they can. Look out for your neighbors and offer to help if they ask for it. Donate money or supplies to local pet charities that offer assistance to pets and their owners. I wish you and your pets a happy, healthy 2021. Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@pawscorner.com. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.

585-967-7919 STOCK UP ON HEALTHFUL FOOD (NAPSI) — During these challenging times, people are avoiding the supermarket and, instead, stocking up on shelf-stable and frozen foods. Unfortunately, these can often be loaded with preservatives and lack nutrition. Many families also resort to take-out foods that can be high in sodium, hydrogenated fats and refined sugars. “The best solution is to find healthy, prepared products that can be purchased in bulk at the supermarket, online and delivered to your doorstep,” advises consumer trends expert Merilee Kern. One of Kern’s personal favorites is Veggies Made Great, which offers easy, familyfriendly and delicious veggie-rich meals and snacks such as muffins, frittatas and veggie cakes. They can fill freezers and keep families healthy—even during stressful times. Vegetables including carrots, zucchini and kale are the first and primary ingredients in any Veggies Made Great item, and all are free of gluten, soy, peanuts and dairy. Available in the freezer section, each is individually wrapped and can be quickly and easily heated in the oven or microwave. It’s an easy and tasty way to have veggiedriven nutrition on the menu every day. You can find them at www.TheHealthfoodStore.com and locate retailers at www.VeggiesMadeGreat.com.

NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Apply lemon juice to the cut surface of an apple to prevent browning. * For stubborn dry patches on hands, like knuckles and around fingernails, try rubbing in a bit of Chapstick. It does the trick to moisturize, and it doesn’t wash off as easily. * “To protect feet from getting soggy when out in snowy or rainy weather, cut a piece of plastic wrap about 3 inches longer than your foot on both sides, then step on it and fold it up on all sides before you put your foot in your shoe. It also keeps feet warm.” -- M.S. in Colorado * “I use the old-fashioned round coffee filters to cover food in the microwave. Less expensive than paper plates and stays in place but doesn’t stick to food.” -- N.B. in Texas
* When making meatloaf, put strips of raw bacon on the bottom of the pan and place the meatloaf on top. It adds terrific flavor and will keep the meatloaf from sticking to the pan. * “I purchased a dish drain pad approximately 9 inches by 17 inches, and I use it on the seat of my shower so it won’t be slippery. It fits perfect -- especially good for seniors! I am 86 years old, so I need all the help I can get.” -- B. B. In Massachusetts
