PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
How Long Can Dog Stay Outside in the Snow? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My dog loves to go outdoors, but I worry that it’s too cold and icy for her to be outside right now. I’m housebound and unable to take “Sookie” out for walks or to play in the snow. I have a fenced yard, but I can’t supervise her. My younger neighbor takes her out every morning for a few minutes, and that’s it. What can I do? -- Sara P., Bennington, Vermont DEAR SARAH: Big props to your neighbor for helping to take care of Sookie! Even on cold winter days, a few minutes outside can be uplifting for your dog. And a “relief,” if you know what I mean. If Sookie stays in the fenced yard and comes when you call her, it may be safe to let her out once or twice during the day. How long she stays out depends on her size and cold tolerance. Very small dogs should not be outside for more than a few minutes when it’s below freezing, and should be wrapped up to get warm again quickly. Medium and large dogs can tolerate longer periods. The colder the air and the more ferocious the weather, the less time they should spend outside. When your dog comes in, either from her morning walk or from the fenced yard, rub down her fur with a dry towel and check the underside of her paws for cuts and abrasions. If she is shivering when she comes in, make sure she warms up, and ask your neighbor to bring her in a little sooner. Make sure that Sookie has plenty of water to drink throughout the day: Staying hydrated will help her stay warm.

Homeowners often choose to save money and learn valuable skills by doing their own home improvement projects. These minor or major renovations are made much more successful by having the right tools for the job. Investing in good tools can be smart, but those tools are only effective if they are accessible and in good repair. Homeowners who emphasize taking care of their tools can make DIY projects that much easier and more rewarding. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

CONSIDERATIONS WHEN CHOOSING CARPETING When the time comes to choose flooring for their homes, homeowners may be overwhelmed by the vast array of options at their disposal. The choice between carpet and hardwood flooring, laminate or tile is a matter of personal preference. People have long extolled the virtues of hardwood flooring, but carpeting can be just as stylish and provides a host of other benefits as well. Carpeting insulates rooms in the summer and winter, adding that extra level of protection against the elements. Carpeting also absorbs sound in a home. Many appreciate the warmth and cozy feeling of carpet, especially when stepping out of bed. Carpeting also can increase the level of safety at home. According to the Carpet and Rug Institute, carpeting makes areas of play safer and may also reduce the severity of an injury in the event of a fall. Today, there are many different types of carpeting available. Selecting the right carpeting for a room comes down to identifying the level of traffic in a particular room, the attributes homeowners would like the carpet to have and any other needs that fit with their lifestyles. Take time when shopping for carpeting, which is a substantial investment that can last for many years if the right material is chosen and installed correctly. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

TIPS TO HELP REALIZE YOUR GOALS THIS YEAR
Snow shoeing: Parents may not know that many retailers sell snow shoes for children. W hile snow shoeing can be physically demanding, it’s also a fun w ay for families that like family w alks to continue those traditions even if there are a few inches of snow on the ground. M ake sure kids are bundled up, paying extra attention to their footw ear. Kids w ill enjoy snow shoeing more if their boots are both comfortable and capable of keeping their feet w arm.
Start small, but start immediately. Lifestyle changes can be difficult, so make small changes initially and gradually work toward larger, more significant changes. Starting small can lay a successful foundation, but it’s also important to start immediately. Procrastination can reduce the likelihood of achieving your goals, and the earlier you get started the more quickly you and your loved ones will adjust to the changes necessary to realize your goals.

Magic Maze NATIONAL – DAY: JANUARY
so my doctor ordered an EKG and sent me to a cardiologist. They did a heart monitor for a week and said I have inappropriate sinus tachycardia but that I don’t need any treatment. I’m still having symptoms. What can I do? -- B.V. ANSWER: Inappropriate sinus tachycardia is an uncommon diagnosis, most often seen in women in their 30s. The heart rate is fast (“tachycardia”), but on an EKG it appears normal, meaning it comes from the sino-atrial node, the natural pacemaker of the heart, hence “sinus.” The average heart rate must be over 90 for 24 hours. It’s important to be sure there isn’t another cause for the tachycardia, such as elevated thyroid levels, fever, volume depletion (dehydration) or anemia. The symptoms may continue for months or even years. Common symptoms include the lightheadedness you felt, but may also include palpitations, shortness of breath, dizziness and decreased ability to exercise. The diagnosis can sometimes be confused with POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome), where the heart rate dramatically increases with changing to an upright position. A tilt-table test is the diagnostic tool for POTS. If there is no other reason for sinus tachycardia, then medication may be used to reduce symptoms. A beta blocker is the usual first choice, but there are others available. I found some more information at https://tinyurl.com/ ISTheart that may be useful for you. ***
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a woman going crazy with hair loss. My hair has always been long and thick, but it is coming out in handfuls. I can only think it must be due to my blood pressure medicines. I’ve been taking amlodipine and lisinopril for years. I’m in good health and 90 years young. -- M. ANSWER: It is unlikely that the hair loss is due to either amlodipine or lisinopril. Neither of these are well described to provoke hair loss, and if a medicine is going to do that, it usually does within a few months. The most common cause of hair loss in a 90-year-old woman is female pattern hair loss, in which the hair loss is mostly on the front and top of the scalp. However, there are several causes of hair loss, and a dermatologist may be helpful in determining the cause and treatment. Please don’t stop taking your blood pressure medicine. ***

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles On Medicare? Beware of COVID Card Scam Have you received a phone call asking if you’ve received your new “special” Medicare COVID card? Beware: There is no such thing. It’s a scam. I did receive such a call. The person on the other end asked if I’d received my new card, which I’d heard nothing about, and proceeded to try to ask me a number of questions. She claimed there are a lot of fancy benefits that come with the COVID card. In the name of research for this column, I did not hang up immediately as I usually do. Instead, I went along with the caller, listening but not providing any information. I asked where they’d gotten my name and was told they were accessing the Medicare database. I was quickly convinced it was a scam. I hung up and called the Medicare fraud line to report it. The fraud people were very glad I did. Other forms of COVID scams include offering fast eligibility for the vaccine, fake vaccine sign-up websites, fake testing and wellness kits, and fake contact tracers who want to know your Medicare card number. Fact: There is no new Medicare card for COVID. Fact: Medicare isn’t going to call you about anything unless you have called or written to them and asked them to contact you by phone. If you receive a call such as the one I got, hang up immediately and then call to report it. Call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-6334227), or HHS at 1-800-447-8477. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

Say “I
You” to your Community: Shop Local for Valentine’s Day! By Amanda Dudek
I
t is no secret that 2020 left many local businesses struggling. In fact, in its September 2020 Economic Impact Report, popular review platform, Yelp, reported that 163,735 businesses had shut down by August 31st, 60% of them never to reopen. According to data from the Census Bureau’s Annual Survey of Entrepreneurs, employers with fewer than 100 workers account for 98.2% of all businesses. The clear majority, these “small” businesses are the backbone of our communities. “American business is overwhelmingly small business,” states the Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council. That they are in such desperate straits is concerning, a fact with which many Americans agree, so much so that the plight of local businesses has kickstarted a shop local trend. According to Mint Personal Finance, a personal financial management company, 1 in 5 consumers were focused on shopping small businesses in the winter of 2020, and one third of shoppers bought more gift cards from these businesses. Heading into 2021, the trend has remained strong. Red Egg Marketing, a Colorado marketing agency, found that a resounding 83% of American consumers would prefer to purchase local products over national products, and 84% were willing to spend a bit more to do so. The reason? A survey by Mint Personal Finance reports consumers’ primary motivation is to keep money local, followed by supporting their community and local creators, a better service experience, and supporting nonprofits. Those remaining local shops, eateries, and other establishments have and continue to survive on the loyalty and mindful spending choices each of us make every day.
companies have become shopping habits for many consumers, and as with most habits, changing these patterns will take time, mindfulness, and perhaps a few new options.
Planning a special Valentine’s Day? Try one or more of our tips, and show some extra love to local businesses while you’re at it! • Budget for local shopping. This tip is so intuitively simple it’s easy to miss. Rather than merely hoping to remember to make a purchase or find necessities locally, just add local spending dollars to your monthly budget. Then, make it a point – and a pleasure – to spend those dollars locally as you see fit! Even a modest amount will make a difference. For example, if every family in the country spent just $10 locally each month, over $9.3 billion would stay local, according to United We Stand and Civic Economics Andersonville Study of Retail Economics. • Shop your favorite local businesses online. Have you searched for your favorite boutique online? Check again! For better or for worse, COVID-19 has changed the way people shop. During shutdowns, many items were only available online as brick-and-mortars temporarily closed their doors. Even now, as more and more businesses resume some open hours, many consumers continue to appreciate the convenience of online shopping. Fortunately, one faint silver lining was that temporary closures encouraged several of local retailers to take their business online. So, before you click on an online retailer, do a quick local search instead. You might be surprised!
Does shopping local really keep that much more money in my community? Absolutely! Shopping local keeps up to 4Xs as much money in your community than shopping at chains. According to multiple sources, at least 48% of every purchase at a local business is recirculated locally compared to just 14% of chain purchases and virtually 0% from online retailer purchases. As AMIBA (American Independent Business Alliance) puts it, “Buying remotely on the web creates almost no local benefit – just a few minutes’ work for a delivery person.” The difference is clear.
Ready to Shop Local? Check out our tips! Wait. Isn’t shopping local as simple as going to a local business and making a purchase? Well, yes and no. While we certainly hope you will frequent local businesses as much as possible, we recognize that shopping with online retailers as well as opting to shop at chain

• Share, share, and share some more! One of the best ways to support local businesses you love is by word-of-mouth and by click of mouse. Share photos of the items you love and tell everyone where you got them. Take a photo of yourself enjoying local businesses and share them to your social media. Invite friends and family members to like local businesses online. And of course, share the things you love by purchasing them as gifts for the people you love. ° µ ¾ À É ° ° É Ì Ñ Ò Ñ Ò Ó °

Beverly Jane Roberts (Rowley) January 18, 2021 Honeoye/Brighton: Beverly Jane Roberts (Rowley) passed away on January 18, 2021 surrounded by family and friends. Beverly was born in Canandaigua, NY on December 11, 1947 to the late Vincent and Pearl Rowley of Honeoye, NY. She graduated as a Registered Nurse from Alfred State College and worked as a psychiatric nurse and nurse administrator until she retired. She leaves her loving children, Matthew (Kimberly) Roberts and Victoria Roberts (Ezra Bereziuk); her former spouse and dear friend, Wayne Roberts ( Janice Attersley); beloved grandchildren, Lana and Jett Bereziuk, and Jack and Samuel Roberts. She is also survived by her siblings, Stephen Rowley, Vincent Rowley (Patricia) and Bonnie Rowley; many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Beverly is predeceased by her parents, Vincent and Pearl Rowley; mother and father-in-law, Elton and Melva Roberts; brother-in-law, Gary Roberts; and sister-in-law, Gale Onderdonk.
Colleen M. Barber of Honeoye, NY passed away peacefully January 22, 2021 at the age of 71, with her children by her side. She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Sean (Amanda Pease) Barber of Wilmington, VT and Kelly (Michael) Gabriel of Dummerston, VT; grandchildren, Quinlan, Lillian and Elizabeth Barber; sisters, Sharon Cardinale and Sheila Ryan; as well as her 4 nieces, 6 nephews, and numerous relatives and friends. Colleen was predeceased by both her parents, Clarence and Evelyn Ryan and her sister, Sandy Ryan. Colleen attended Monroe High School before graduating from Sullivan County Community College with an Associate’s Degree in Medical Lab. She continued her education at Brockport State where she received her Teaching Degree. During this time, she met her former husband Daniel Barber. They moved their family to Vermont in the 80’s where they raised their children and ran a successful family business. Colleen was a kind, loving and giving soul who would do anything for anyone and always put everyone else’s needs first. Her love for her family, friends, neighbors, and furry friends was always prevalent. As was her witty “tell it how it is” Irish spirit. She often had colorful words that could make anyone blush! She was an enthusiastic volunteer in areas important to her, most notably her time spent as an EMT with the Richmond Fire Dept. But of all of her roles, the one she treasured the most was that of grandmother, which she embraced with great joy. She would take them for weeks at a time every summer, filling their days with all kinds of activities, from swimming lessons and horseback riding to day camps and church groups. A celebration of Colleen’s life will be held later this year. Memorial donations may be made to The Richmond Fire Dept. P.O. Box 469, Honeoye, NY 14471. The family wishes to send a special thank you to the Thompson Hospital ICU staff for the care and compassion of their mother.
I still find each day too short for all the thoughts I w ant to think, all the w alks I w ant to take, all the books I w ant to read, and all the friends I w ant to see. - John Burroughs
Beverly radiated with love and compassion towards everyone who was fortunate to know her. This love is endless and will remain in our hearts forever. She will be greatly missed. Calling hours will took place on January 25, 2021 from 3-6pm at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home, 8624 Main Street in Honeoye, NY. Memorial contributions can be made to the Friends of the Rochester Psychiatric Center or Wilmot Cancer Institute. The family wishes to thank the staff at the Wilmot Cancer Institute for their dedicated care to Beverly during her battle against cancer and her beloved sister Bonnie who devoted herself to caring for Beverly throughout the past 16 months. This program is available through the generosity of area veterinarians who recognize the need to limit the abundance of unwanted pets. Participating veterinarians donate 1/3 of the cost of the surgery, and the balance of the surgery is a shared cost between the pet owner and the Ontario County Humane Society.

HOBBIES FOR DIFFERENT PERSONALITY TYPES Athletes can pursue a host of potential hobbies or activities that will foster their love of sports. Men and women who still have a hop in their step can sign up to compete in adult sports leagues. Depending on the sport, leagues might be available to adults of various ages and skill levels, and some may even be more focused on fun than competition. For athletes who can no longer lace up their cleats, coaching youth sports or volunteering to coach at a nearby school provides a chance to stay involved even if competing is no longer possible.

To all our readers, if you can be sure to keep clean your walkways and areas around your mailboxes, that is a huge help!
Billieve! Congratulations to the Buffalo uffalo uff alo Bills! Although they didn’t win the he AFC Championship that we were hoping for, they had an amazing season! Thank you for providing excitement and entertainment to an otherwise dreary few months. Thank you… To all those who check on their neighbors, run errands, write notes, and make phone calls to those who are housebound due to COVID or bad weather. It means a lot. Hats off Hats off to our GVPS Adult Carriers and Postal Workers that get our beloved Penny Saver delivered week in and week out during these Winter months laced with Covid.
How ‘bout them Browns! and Bills! A few decades ago, the Cleveland Browns were an extremely popular and followed team in Western New York, for a couple of reasons: they were pretty good and fun to watch; their games were picked up in the Rochester area and hence grew a fan base. Wonderful that they bested the Steelers two weeks in a row to make the playoffs. And the Bills almost making the Super Bowl was quite an accomplishment for such a young team. Both teams’ futures look bright!
Vaccines So sad to see the cupboard bare when it comes to vaccines. The past administration just could not come to grips with reality and now we continue to pay the price. Stay safe everyone and where your mask! It’s going to be a long four years. The first week in office was a bust. Putting thousands out of work and the environment at risk by ending Keystone, opening the southern border and worst of all the answer for CV-19 is, “nothing we can do
Cheers! Cheers to Section 5 and the decision to have Winter sports at the High School level. If the teams cooperate with the Covid rules, they should be able to enjoy their sports!
