Service HVAC systems It’s important to ensure that heating systems are working properly prior to the cold-weather season. It may only take hours for the interior of a home to reach dangerously low temperatures without adequate heat. Homeowners should schedule annual checkups of furnaces and hot water heaters. Inspect the heat exchanger for cracks, install a clean air filter and make sure all thermostats are working properly.

585-802-1544
When renovating a home, homeowners may not give ample thought to the roof unless there is a leak or another sign of damage. It’s easy to forget about the roof when materials are working properly. Some people put off replacing or repairing a roof simply because of the costs of such undertakings. However, the right roof can improve the appearance of a home and provide protection against the elements, potentially preventing damage to a home’s interior as well.

lawn problems as I drive around our area. Stressed lawns are generally those that invite the growth of fungus. Stresses include high heat and humidity, wet conditions, mowing too low and/or too frequently, overly thick layer of thatch (layer of organic matter between soil and grass blades). There are a multitude of fungi that are common in cool season grasses (Kentucky Bluegrass, Fescues, and Perennial Ryegrass). In some cases, a fungicide may be called for, but generally it is most useful as This summer, our lawns have been higha preventative. Usually, when the weather ly stressed, and I have observed many becomes more favorable for the lawn and There are sections in my lawn that look dark gray or black. When you get closer is appears to be tiny little spots of something like a fungus growing on the blades or grass. They are all over my lawn. Can you tell me what they might be and how I can get rid of them? Are thy dangerous to my small dog? - Kimberly L.
less favorable for disease, the grass will recover without a fungicide. From the photos sent along with this question, it appears to me that the fungus in this case is a slime mold. Although it looks ugly when it forms white, gray, or purplish spore masses on grass blades, it is not a parasite but feeds on microorganisms in the soil and thatch, and is simply using the blades for support. It doesnít kill the grass and will go away without treatment when conditions change. Perhaps you can just mow the affected areas to get rid of it. Even
if I am incorrectly diagnosing this fungus, it is still likely that it will clear up when conditions improve. If it is another type that kills some patches of grass, you may need to do some reseeding this fall. I find no evidence that lawn fungus is harmful to pets.

Canandaigua Families Show Holiday Support for Veterans BY AMANDA DUDEK or more than 10 years, Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc. New York Chapter 1 in Canandaigua, has worked hard to make the holiday season special for Veterans and their families. Their project, Holidays for Heroes, helps ensure that Veterans and Veteran families receive Christmas gifts, meeting both needs and wants, while letting them know there are many who care. Canandaigua neighbor, Cate Roth, first felt the cause pull on her heartstrings about 10 years ago, and she has organized support for many area Veteran families ever since. “There is always a great need to help Veteran families around the holidays,” said Cate Roth, Senior Manager of Global IT Controls Assurance at Xerox Corporation. “Blue Star Mothers has been around a long time, and they usually have a population of Veteran families that are struggling. We purchase all the gifts on their wishlists for these families.” Roth, whose son just finished serving with the Navy in June, The Serafine family dropping off their gifts! They were one of the 34 families that recalled she first heard about Holidays for Heroes by reading a notice worked with Cate Roth last year to provide gifts to 18 of the military families on in a local paper. “They were having their holiday program and asking the Blue Star Mothers’ list! for people to get in touch with them and participate, so I did. I shared Joyce Mader, President of Blue Star Mothers of America, Inc. New what I was doing, and suddenly, my friends all wanted families they York Chapter 1, could not say enough about Cate Roth and the wondercould support, as well.” She added that Canandaigua families have a ful people whose help she coordinates to support Holidays for Heroes. real connection to Veterans, thanks to their local VA hospital. “Each year, we typically have 70 or more Veteran families in need; Cate Acting as a go-between, Roth coordinates the efforts of the fam- and her group usually take 10-15 of them,” she said. “She has a slew of ily and friends who reach out to her each year, asking to participate. families eager to ‘get in on the action,’ as she says. Cate and the families “Coordinating our efforts has really been the key,” she said. “Some she brings--and all who support the program--are simply incredible” people can support whole families, others just one person. Each year, Mader explained that each year, the Blue Star Mothers identify VetI put the call out through Facebook for anyone interested, and I re- erans and Veteran families ceive an overwhelming response each time. It is well worth the effort. “This is what I do naturally, so it is not that much work for me, and I feel good while I am doing it. It breaks your heart to see these families asking for things like socks, a few toys for their kids, or just basic items to see someone who has served in multiple tours come back and need to ask for necessities, it has to be so hard. You get the chance to play Santa Claus, and people really feel good about this program. Those who have joined my team say this is the best part of Christmas for them.” Roth and her fellow volunteers brought a Merry Christmas to over 20 families last year. “So many of us are in positions where we are doing well, and it is nice to be able to give back to people who have sacrificed so much for us,” shared Roth. “It feels really good to know we are helping out. Our group efforts have a lot of momentum, and everyone wants to keep doing this. This year has been difficult, both for the Blue Star Mothers and for Veterans, so it is more important than ever to support them. It takes all of us to pull these things together.”

are given,” she stated. “We share mother, father, which one is a Veteran, children as boy or girl and ages, and each family member’s wishlist. The family receives a number. The only people who know the names are our chairperson and whomever we use to validate the veracity of the families. We also keep the names of those who donate the gifts private.” Gifts include necessities, wishlist items, and two $50 grocery gift cards. Blue Star Mothers also send Christmas trees, purchased from Mayflowers Nursery in Canandaigua, and “Christmas in a box” packages to our troops. “They were able to enjoy the smells of Christmas, have hot chocolate, candy canes and other Christmas treats and have something happy at the end of the year.” No matter when the serviceperson is active or a Veteran, Mader feels this is the least we can do for them and their families. “They are proud people who have gone from becoming the guardians of our nation to having to ask for help,” she explained of Veterans. “That is hard, but people in Western New York and especially the Finger Lakes are just so generous and kind. People like Cate are amazing and really keep others involved.” For more information and to support Holidays for Heroes, visit the Blue Star Mothers website at www.bluestarmothersny1.org. By JoAnn Derson * “I find it helpful to set calendar reminders on my phone for working out and meal prepping. I have to treat it like a job so that I’ll do it. Thought that might help other people who struggle.” -- S.O. in Wyoming * “Those hide-a-key rocks can be a little obvious -- at least they are to me. I have a spare key hidden outside too, but I sealed mine in a plastic baggie and buried it in a spot known only to our family members. Also, it’s not right by the door.” -– I.E. in Mississippi * Home office motivation: Preplan your outfits for daily success. When it’s all too easy to roll out of bed and log on without a thought, it might help your productivity to prepare for the workday as you would have in the time of commutes and conferences. The right wardrobe choices can help you set the tone for the day. * “When closing up our cabin for the season, we brought a box of mothballs and scattered them around the porch perimeter. This keeps the small animals like mice and skunks from setting up shop there while no one is around.” -S.F. in Pennsylvania * Now’s a great time to start weatherstripping! Check and recaulk windows. SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Who's Hoarding the Mini Blinds? It's a bit unnerving to walk through a store and see so many empty shelves. I haven't been to the local big box store very often lately, but I wanted to see if what I suspected was true. I'd been unable to order a number of items for curbside delivery and had been told that lots of things were actually in the store but couldn't be purchased except inside in person. That made no sense. I suspected that, instead, those items just weren't there. So, in I went, mask on face, miniature hand sanitizer bottle in purse. I was stunned to see so many empty shelves. It wasn't like the first month of the pandemic when people were hoarding and taking as much bread, sanitizers and canned goods as they could carry out, until limits were put on purchases. Instead, there were shelves empty of items you wouldn't normally associate with hoarding, like mini blinds. Who hoards mini blinds? I could (maybe) understand the lack of packs of lined school paper and pencils, for the kids doing remote learning, or toys because the kids are home all the time. I could see where we'd still be missing a variety of paper towels. And I could almost understand the few choices for shampoo and bath soap. But what about dishes and light bulbs? Unless one was in the market for square red dinner dishes or 40-watt bulbs, there were none to be had. Certain shortages we can understand. But what has happened to the supply line when we can't get a simple 100-watt bulb? With winter coming, we might do well to reconsider our supplies and add a few light bulbs to our stash. Otherwise we might be in the dark even more than we already are.

DID YOU KNOW? Come autumn, many foods seem to take on a unique flavor exclusive to the season. That’s thanks to the ubiquitous “pumpkin spice,” which each fall is a specially featured ingredient in everything from cream cheese to marshmallows. Naturally, pumpkin spice is also a key ingredient when preparing pumpkin pie. But just what does pumpkin spice contain? Pumpkin spice is a combination of several different ground spices. It typically includes cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg. It also may include allspice. Pumpkin spice is the name given to the blend in the United States. In the United Kingdom, pumpkin spice is known as “mixed spice,” which is a similar but not exact blend as that used to create pumpkin spice. Both feature cinnamon as the dominant flavor. NATURAL WAYS TO FIGHT FALL ALLERGIES Use eucalyptus oil. This oil is great to have in the house to help clear up sinuses and provide nasal congestion relief. Mix a small amount with coconut oil and rub onto the chest. There also is some evidence that adding a few drops of eucalyptus oil to cleansing products can help kill dust mites around the house.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
Who’s The Boss? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I know it’s a running joke that cats rule people and not the other way around. But if cats can’t stand people, why did they become domesticated in the first place? How did that happen? -Trisha G., San Bernadino, California DEAR TRISHA: While cats seem aloof and rarely fawn over people in the same way that dogs do, they do love their humans. They express their devotion in ways that are weird to us -- like quietly placing a dead mouse in front of us and sitting expectantly until their triumph is acknowledged. Or, like bumping their forehead against our hand, or even our nose. Or meowing incessantly when we’re in the bathroom, worried that we will never come out. When cats were domesticated -scientists think that happened about 12,000 years ago -- they approached humans for much the same reasons that dogs did. There was food available. Cats, like dogs, earned their keep: dogs by keeping watch over their humans, and cats by protecting their food. When humans developed agriculture and began storing grain, rodents became the bane of their existence. Cats, on the other hand, saw a smorgasbord of tasty rats on the menu. Over time, they became domesticated, and our symbiotic existence was cemented. Cats were revered by ancient societies, and yes, jokes about cats ruling the household are probably as old as the early Egyptian pharaohs. Their behavior -- as territorial hunters who move quietly and strike quickly -probably did not need to change as dramatically as wild dogs’ behavior had to evolve. Yet, they did become tame and companionable as well -- although much more aloof. Archaeologists and sociologists have studied the domestication of cats quite a bit, because it helps to answer many questions about ancient peoples. In a way, it helps to outline why cats today behave the way they do. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.
Chest CT Can’t Replace Screening Mammogram ---
CASH FOR VINTAGE ITEMS
DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am due to have a mammogram in July,
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
but around the same time I am supposed to have a chest CT as a follow-up to my chondrosarcoma cancer. I have a CT every other year, and an X-ray on the opposite years of both my affected arm and my lungs. Does a chest CT have the potential of showing a similar finding as a mammogram? I would just as soon not have to expose myself to so much radiation all in one month. I’m 66. There is a history of postmenopausal breast cancer in my family, in my mother’s mother. -- T.M.H. ANSWER: A mammogram is an X-ray that is designed specifically to look for abnormalities in breast tissue. Mammograms have been extensively studied and proven to reduce mortality in women between the ages of 50-74 (outside these ages, there remains extreme controversy). CT scans are X-rays taken from many angles and then reconstructed in a computer to provide a look at many slices of the part of the body being looked at. A CT scanner can be set to emphasize bones or soft tissue, and work is ongoing now with CT scans designed specifically for breast abnormalities. The CT scan you get as follow-up to your chondrosarcoma (a rare cancer of cartilage) is designed to look in lung tissue for abnormalities, and has not been evaluated as a means of screening for breast cancer, although I do know that some may be found anecdotally. The CT scans you get as a part of your cancer follow-up are not an adequate substitute for ongoing mammography, which is particularly important in your case due to a family history. I do understand the concern about radiation, but a mammogram has very little radiation -- approximately the same you would get from naturally occurring radiation sources in seven weeks of walking around. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I read a news report that vasectomy increases risk of prostate cancer. Should men avoid this procedure due to concern for prostate cancer? -- T.S.V. ANSWER: Several studies have looked at this possibility, and the results are conflicting. A 2014 study of about 50,000 U.S. men showed an increase of about 15% in the risk of fatal prostate cancer, but a 2016 study of 360,000 U.S. men showed no increase in risk. In June 2019, a study of over 2 million Danish men showed a 15% increase in overall prostate cancer risk. To put the risk in perspective, about 500 men would need to have a vasectomy for one additional man to get prostate cancer, in the Danish study. It is not clear that the vasectomy caused the prostate cancer. It is possible that there is something about men who choose vasectomy that puts them at higher risk to begin with; however, the authors were unable to find a known risk factor to support that possibility. Even if vasectomy does lead to an increased risk of prostate cancer, it still has similar or lower overall risk than other forms of birth control, and is a good choice for a man who is absolutely sure he does not want to father any more children, as a vasectomy should be considered permanent. PHYSICAL LABOR A big thank you to all landscapers! You so deserve more credit! We appreciate your work while we do believe you deserve better wages! Some would sit on unemployment! Thanks!
THANK YOU TOPS IN HAMLIN! I want to express my appreciation to Aaron at Tops in Hamlin for being so diligent when it comes to cleaning the shopping carts
during this pandemic. Over the months, I know there are others who also participate in making sure that the carts are sanitized, so I want to thank them as well. It may be a task that seems to be never ending and one that goes unnoticed, and that is why I wanted to express my appreciation for a job well done. I have been to another grocery store chain, and I have never seen anyone clean or sanitize the shopping carts. So, hats off to Aaron and the others who day in and day out clean the grocery carts for our protection.
DON’T BE SURPRISED! I had to respond to the recent “support” of loud music from neighbors being okay. Obviously, it was written by neighbors that have no sense of common courtesy. I bet if I cranked music all day next to their house, they would be the first to complain! You do not get to decide what others have to listen to. Want to take a nap? Nope! Music! Want to keep the baby asleep? Nope! Music! Want to enjoy a movie? Nope! Music! You now get to have an extra soundtrack added to your show. There are laws on noise for a reason - people like you! The beauty of this infraction: I get to call the cops, and you would not even hear them coming! The evidence would be deafening!
ENOUGH MUSIC Enough is enough is enough (lyrics in a song) …about music. With so many horrendous things happening in the world, music is the least of one’s worries. If you live in an apartment, then go to management and complain, if you cannot go to the neighbor. Life was simpler when you could engage in conversation with a neighbor and let them know if something bothered you. You could share life stories and talk about the kids and grandkids.... your aching knees, and broken backs. Neighbors were really neighbor’s, not just in name only. They smiled and waved and took an interest in other’s in the neighborhood. They responded when you were in need and crisis. They were there
at your children’s weddings and d were joyous at the arrival of your ur grandchildren.
ROAD COURTESY Thank you to all York waterline pipe installers working on Linwood Rd., Federal Rd., Limerick Rd., and Anderson Rd. for your courtesy with the school bus. You always cleared the way for me and never made us wait. You kept me on schedule. You are appreciated. You all always smiled. York Bus #42.

After enjoying our supper, I tried to cash out, but was told our bill was already paid by someone who wanted to honor a vet. I was not able to find out who this patriot is. But you know who you are.
