She was born in Canandaigua, NY to Kongphanh Kettavong and the late Khamsaene Kettavong. Family and Friends are invited to call on Saturday, October 26, 2019 from 10AM - 1PM at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home, 21 Big Tree Street in Livonia, NY. Kim’s funeral service will take place immediately following calling hours from 1PM - 4PM. Interment will take place at the family’s convenience at Woodlawn Cemetery in Canandaigua. During this beautiful season of Thanksgiving, please accept my thanks and appreciation for the opportunity to serve as your Town Supervisor. Naples has responsible, active, supportive Town Board Members, Village Officials, Planning Board Members, ZBA Board Members and some of the most capable, dependable department heads, elected officials and staff I’ve had the pleasure to work with. Likewise, so many contributions are made by Naples individuals and civic organizations. We couldn’t achieve all we do without their cooperation and collaboration. We continue to strive to provide vital services and good stewardship of your tax dollars and public assets. I am sincerely humbled by your support and the honor of serving this great community.

Around and around the house the leaves fall thick—but never fast, for they come circling down with a dead lightness that is sombre and slow. Let the gardener sweep and sweep the turf as he will, and press the leaves into full barrows, and wheel them off, still they lie ankle-deep. ~Charles Dickens, Bleak House

[L]o! the eventide of the year, the melancholy season of Autumn.... the widowed quail, which is shivering on the fallen tree, utters her plaintive cry, causing a momentary sadness to oppress his heart. The oak rears its head above the plain, but is stripped of its foliage,—naked and alone,—a fit emblem of man in the hour of adversity. We see the leaves floating on the bosom of the river, and we feel that such too will soon be our condition.

The quality of empathy, mercy and kindness they showed walking her through the process from start to finish only took a day. They didn’t try to sell her on a car she couldn’t afford. My question is simple: why tailgate before passing? Whether in a legal passing zone or illegally over a double solid yellow line, it’s always the same. Someone is right on my bumper! I’m not “jumping” out of your way, if that’s your intention. I won’t speed up to accommodate you, and you won’t bully me into pulling over. I usually drive the speed limit, or maybe 5 mph over the limit, so it’s not like I’m crawling. On a 55-mph road with a sharp curve and the yellow recommended speed is 40, l won’t still do 55 because you are in a hurry. Is your impatience important enough to cause an accident? There are many reasons someone could hit their brakes. Please look further than the tip of your nose or the car’s bumper in front of it. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

We had a small electrical problem at our house. We called the local electric company, and they recommended four electricians. Three of them came to our house and gave estimates. They all seemed eager for the job and told us to contact them. Unfortunately, when we called and then emailed each of them, we received no replies. They ignored our messages and made us wait to see if they would reply to us. It would have been nice and respectful if they could have at least sent us a simple message saying, “Sorry, but I am unable to take this job because my schedule is busy right now.” That is the proper way to do business!

Responding to the comment that a handicapped person should welcome any assistance they are offered, whether requested or not: I am shocked! I am not an object for your pity. I am a person, endowed with the same rights as anyone else. I am quite capable on my own, but if I require assistance, I will ask for it. Touching me or my wheelchair, without my permission, is assault. It is against the law! Before you offer to “help” me, please wait for me to ask. Otherwise, you could find yourself explaining things to a policeman. I repeatedly asked for a VIP Empire Pass at my library, but it’s always out. it. Phone calls have not been returned; emails ignored. You may have saved some money, but all you really accomplished is to be known as a patron inconsiderate of others. It’s a privilege offered by NYS and the library system. It’s a shame you feel you’re owed this benefit more than others. You should be ashamed, but I doubt you are. Hoping this message shames you into returning the Pass and apologizing to the librarians who must keep telling other patrons they can’t help them.

Lifespan of Greater Rochester Apple bobbing is one autumn tradition that involves the use of apples. Despite the popularity of apple bobbing around Halloween, some historians believe the tradition of bobbing for apples is rooted in love and romance and has little to do with trick-or-treating. According to History.com, apple bobbing began as a courting ritual. While the rules of the game varied, the idea was to attempt to bite into the apple named for the young man the woman desired. This method of courting eventually became less popular, but bobbing for apples was resurrected in the early 20th century when Americans who traced their roots to Ireland and England began playing the game at Halloween parties.

St. Agnes Harvest Tastings Offers Flavors and Fun By Amanda Dudek
O
n Saturday, November 9th, novices and connoisseurs alike will revel in the rich and sumptuous flavors of the Finger Lakes region at the St. Agnes School Harvest Tastings and Silent Auction. This annual fundraising event is much anticipated for its variety of culinary delights and for the fun to be had participating in auctions and draws. Held again this year at the historic Avon Inn, St. Agnes Harvest Tastings will be open from 12pm until 3pm to guests 21 and older. “Every year, we gather together to enjoy the area’s best wine, beer, hard cider and delicious food, including everything from desserts to chilis and homemade pastas,” said event cochair Kathryn Boor. “Arts and crafts are also available from local artisans. This is my 10th year helping fellow SAS parents create this event. We have about 20 vendors each year and always add something new.” This year, the Rabbit Room, located in the heart of Honeoye Falls, and Star Cider, located in Canandaigua, will be joining as new tasting participants. Also new to the event are the Avondale Pub and No BS Brewing. Returning favorites include The Cake Place, Shoreacre Wines, and the Beachcomber to name a few. The event typically draws about 200 guests and has been held at Camp Stella Maris and the Lakeville Training Grounds. “Guests come to eat, drink, bid on items in our silent auction and enter our raffles and drawings,” shared Boor. “It is one of the biggest fundraisers for our school.” 2018 was St. Agnes School’s first year holding Harvest Tastings at the beautiful Avon Inn. “Owner Jenn Kraus and her staff were amazing at helping us pull off such a large event,” Boor recalled. “We love being at the Inn. It is absolutely stunning, and many of our guests had never been inside to see all of the renovations.” For only $25, guests are welcome to sip and sample everything vendors have to offer. Upon entering the Avon Inn, guests will be ushered into its elegant ballroom filled with vendors, the tantalizing scent of tasty samples and fabulous auction items. “Our committee really thought outside of the box to offer some unique auction items for our guests,” said Boor. “We even feature experiences, like getting a ride in an Avon PD patrol car, or firetruck as great gifts for children.” Items also include such things as baskets from many local businesses, tickets to a Rochester Broadway Theatre League show, a vacation, jewelry, memorabilia such as a signed Sabres puck, goods and gift certificates from area eateries and services like family photo sessions. “The room A chalkboard topped desk up for auction, comes alive,” donated by Anne Barrett explained Boor.

“Friends and neighbors set the atmosphere buzzing as they move from one booth to the next. Everyone is welcome to participate in the silent auction as well as to purchase tickets for a Chinese auction. The beautiful creations by St. Agnes School Pre-K students are a huge hit every year,” Boor said. “Bidding can get intense. Every year, Mrs. Cindy Zhe bakes a homemade apple pie, and the bidding war commences! It gets crazy and is a lot of fun.” A wine pull will also be offered. Guests will be asked to donate $20 and are guaranteed to walk away with a bottle of wine worth up to $75 dollars, and some bottles come with a gift card, as well. Similarly, a gift card pull will be offered in which guests donate $20 and receive a mystery gift card from such places as Wegmans, Dave & Busters or local businesses like the everpopular Geek Chic Boutique. “Guests and volunteers alike love this event and have so much fun participating,” said Kathryn Boor. “Come get in on the action!” To see the list of participating The beautifully displayed Wine Pull food and drink vendors, visit facebook.com/stagnesavon. To donate items for the silent auction or become a tasting participant and showcase your culinary offerings, contact the school at 585.226.8500 or email stagnes@dor.org.

Removing The Mystery From A Prostate Cancer Diagnosis
A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Oct. 22, 1975, Air Force Sgt. Leonard Matlovich, a decorated Vietnam War veteran, is given a “general” discharge after publicly declaring his homosexuality. Matlovic’s discharge was later upgraded to “honorable,” and he was buried with full military honors in 1988. * On Oct. 23, 1989, 23 people are killed in a series of explosions sparked by an ethylene leak at a Phillips Petroleum plant in Pasadena, Texas. The blasts were caused by inadequate safety procedures. * On Oct. 27, 2006, the last Ford Taurus rolls off the assembly line in Hapeville, Georgia. The keys to the silver car went to 85-year-old Truett Cathy, the founder of Chick-fil-A, who added it to his automobile collection.

(NAPS)—According to the American Cancer Society, about one in nine American men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. More than 173,000 new diagnoses are expected in the U.S. this year, fortunately, this disease can be treated successfully, especially if caught early. What To Do If you’re 50 or older or have a family history of prostate cancer, you should speak to your doctor about whether screening for the disease is right for you. Understanding Prostate Cancer “In the early stages, the most common symptoms of prostate cancer are no symptoms at all,” says Deepak A. Kapoor, M.D., founder of the non-profit, Integrated Medical Foundation, and President of Advanced Urology Centers of New York. There are four stages of prostate cancer. Stage one is diagnosed very early and confined to the prostate. At this stage, the patient is unlikely to be experiencing any symptoms. He may not need treatment beyond regular follow-up blood tests, exams and possibly biopsies. The disease is very treatable. When diagnosed early, the five-year relative survival rate is almost 100 percent. Why Do Some Men Resist Routine Screenings? Many men are embarrassed by the digital rectal exam, concerned about treatment or fear they can’t afford it. Some Answers Testing: Since the 1980s, prostate cancer was being diagnosed with a simple blood test, the PSA. It checks the level of prostate-specific antigen in your blood. In the past, there was controversy about whether having a prostate cancer screening done was beneficial or if it produced more harmful effects due to complications from over-testing. PSA testing was the best thing available for a long time. New tools now exist that provide much more information, giving predictability about the aggressiveness of the cancer and data to help urologists safely manage their patients’ disease. With this information, urologists have higher numbers of appropriate candidates on active surveillance regimens. Using tests such as the Gleason grade score, overall patient health and risk factors—age, race, ethnicity, family history and exposure to Agent Orange—urologists can determine with confidence how aggressive the cancer is and which patients will do well on active surveillance. They will also know which therapy options will be the most optimal for the patient. Making it easier for doctors and their patients to do this testing is the full-range of diagnostic equipment and supplies available through the trusted advisors at Henry Schein Medical, a provider of medical and surgical supplies to health care professionals. Treatments: There are many ways to treat prostate cancer, including hormone therapy, surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and cryoablation. The newest innovation being successfully utilized is immunotherapy, which uses your own immune system to identify, target and destroy the cancer cells without harming the body’s own “good cells.” Your doctor can help you decide what’s best for you. It is important to remember that you have the most options available when prostate cancer is diagnosed early and is in the most treatable stage. It is important for men to be vigilant with their routine screenings. Paying: Many insurance policies will pay for diagnostic tests and in some places, such as New York State, there’s no co-pay or co-insurance cost sharing responsibility for diagnostic prostate cancer screenings (with such policies). This puts PSAs on the same level as mammograms, thanks to efforts of advocates and doctors such as those at Advanced Urology Centers of New York, one of the largest urology group practices in the country. Learn More For further facts, visit the American Cancer Society at www.cancer. org and Integrated Medical Foundation (IMF) https://imfcares.org/. IMF provides screenings, education and support services FREE. Learning about prostate cancer early can save your life—and can be easier than many men realize.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH
CROSSWORD
By Keith Roach, M.D.
Can Nothing be Done for Severe Back Pain? ---
DEAR DR. ROACH: I have severe lower back pain and can’t

stand up straight or walk very well. I saw a back specialist, and he took X-rays and reviewed an MRI. He informed me nothing could be done for me because I have diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH). I would like to know what this is and why nothing can be done for me. -- Anon. ANSWER: DISH is essentially a disease of bone spurs. The ligaments and their attachments to bone themselves become calcified and bonelike. The cause is unknown. Symptoms are commonly back pain (more often, middle or upper back, not the lower back pain you have), but pain also may occur in the neck. Problems with walking are not common, but can happen if a nerve is being compressed. Surgery is not a usual treatment for DISH. It is occasionally necessary if the bone spurs press on nerves or if the bone spurs are so large that they interfere with eating. That doesn’t mean nothing can be done for you. Physical therapy may be very beneficial; judicious pain medication and regular gentle exercise are the other effective treatments. If the difficulty standing straight and walking persist, you should get re-evaluated.

DEAR DR. ROACH: What is your take on the benefits versus risks of DMSO? -- W.R.
ANSWER: DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) has only one use approved by the Food and Drug Administration, in people with interstitial cystitis, where it is directly instilled into the bladder. It is also used (off-label, meaning without an official FDA indication) as a recovery treatment when the tube delivering some types of chemotherapy comes out of the vein. DMSO may have a pain-relieving effect, both topically when applied, as well as in the brain, though the mechanism for this is unclear. DMSO is an antioxidant and opens pores in lipid membranes, but again it’s unclear how this relates to its possible effects on people’s symptoms. It is an interesting and difficult-to-study compound. It is exceedingly permeable: Within five minutes of being applied to skin, it is detectable in the blood. It has a distinct flavor and odor that can be noticed after application to the skin, which makes doing a controlled trial difficult; subjects in a study find it very easy to know whether or not they have been given DMSO. It’s estimated that people have spent billions of dollars on DMSO for other conditions, especially arthritis and inflammatory diseases. However, the evidence that it is effective is poor, largely because of the difficulty in doing good studies on this compound, but also because large-scale studies are very expensive and there is little enthusiasm on performing such studies on a cheap compound. The risks appear to be small. Apart from the taste and smell changes, there are rare reports of allergies, discomfort in the bladder after instillation there and possible damage to the eye lens (at least in animals). You didn’t tell me what condition you are considering DMSO for, but except in the case of interstitial cystitis (where there are other therapies more likely to be effective), given uncertain benefits, I don’t recommend DMSO despite the low risk of harm. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Enjoy Your Hunting Season W/O Damaging Your Hearing
HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Caution dominates the Sheep’s monetary aspect this week. Rams and Ewes might want to shear their big spending plans until a more favorable financial picture begins to emerge by week’s end. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Thrift counts both at home and at work. So you might want to rethink major purchases or investments. Also, be wary of a so-called revelation about a previous decision. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Both household budgets and workplace accounts might benefit from some judicious trimming of unnecessary expenses. A partnership could lead to an unexpected challenge. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A previously overlooked opportunity could re-emerge with a new travel-related matter. Check this out carefully to see if it’s what you really want before you decide one way or another. LEO (July 23 to August 22) This could be the start of a new career-changing phase, so start marking down your many accomplishments for those who need to know how much you have to offer. Good luck. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) It’s not too early for the sometimes procrastinating Virgo to start making those long-distance travel plans. The sooner you decide where to go, when to go and how to go, the better. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Financial matters once again figure in any major action you might take regarding career, travel or other endeavors. You’ll want a ready reserve to help you back up those moves. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Trying to resolve a problem in a personal relationship could be more difficult than you’d expected. Look into the possibility that someone might be interfering for his or her own reasons. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A project you once rejected might be more attractive because of changes that you feel you can now work with. The weekend is especially favorable to family matters. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) This is a good week for the gregarious Goat to enjoy being with people you care for. You might even want to show off those creative kitchen skills you’re so adept at. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A colleague might think your attitude is patronizing or even outright insulting. True. That might be his or her problem. But you might want to take some reassuring steps anyway. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) It’s a good time to jettison those old concepts about a family matter you might have been holding on to. This will help make room for a new and more enlightened way of dealing with it. BORN THIS WEEK: You like to analyze a puzzling situation before you try to resolve it. This makes you excel at getting things done the right way.

Although apple bobbing still occurs today, many eschew the tradition because of germs. The concept of sticking one’s face into a communal bucket of water isn’t appealing in a society that prioritizes sanitary behavior. Those who grew up bobbing for apples and want to continue the tradition in a more sanitary way can create individualized games. Instead of one large bucket, purchase smaller buckets and fill them with water. Place a couple of apples in each bucket and let participants race to see who can grab an apple first.

NEED TO HIRE SOMEONE?
THE RIGHT WAYS TO UPDATE A RÉSUMÉ The job market can be competitive, as new graduates flood the field each and every year. But graduation season is not the only time of year when the competition to find work gets heated. The start of the new year tends to be one of the busiest times of year for new hires. According to the employment resource Simply Hired, the first Monday after New Year’s Day tends to be the busiest day for job search activity. Companies are returning to full production after the holidays, and as a result there is a flurry of new activity. This means applicants can use the last quarter of the year to prepare for job searches they will institute once the calendar turns. Many job seekers may benefit from revamping their résumés before beginning their search. It’s not uncommon for recruiters to receive thousands of résumés for each job opening they post, and the sheer volume of applicants can make it difficult for job seekers to get their résumés seen. In such instances, job seekers must take steps to tip the odds in their favor.
