HOW TO MAKE OLDER HOMES MORE ENERGY EFFICIENT
Check for leaks and plug any you find. Homes may develop air leaks over time, and such leaks allow air to infiltrate the home. When that occurs, homeowners instinctively turn up the thermostat in winter to combat the cold air getting in. Come summertime, those same homeowners will run their air conditioners on a higher setting in an effort to stay comfortable when hot air is creeping through the cracks. Rather than adjusting the temperature inside, fix any sources of air infiltration you find. Run your hand along doorways and windows to determine if any drafts are coming through. Older homes may also develop cracks in bricks, around the foundation and in siding or stucco. Seal any areas where you feel air infiltrating your home, which will save money, reduce your energy consumption and make your older home more efficient.

HOW TO FIX THAT STICKING DOOR
Nearly everyone has experienced a sticking door that just will not close properly. This problem may become more noticeable when temperatures rise and humidity contributes to the swelling of wooddoorsandframes.
According to The Family Handyman, a home improvement resource, the standard remedy foralleviatingastickingdooristo remove the door and pare down theedgesthatarerubbingsothat the door will once again swing freely. While this can solve the problem, it can be a hassle, as it requires refinishing the pareddown edge and rehanging the door. Try these shortcuts first before creating more work than mightbenecessary.
• Identify the problem area and rub it with a dry bar of soap. This should reduce friction and allow the door to close more easily.
• Remove humidity with a dehumidifier or by running an airconditioningunit.
• Check for loose hinges or sagging around the hinge. Tighten the fasteners to sure up the door and create better alignment.
• Spray the hinges with lubricant if you suspect sticking is originating because of squeaky hinges.
• Look for obstructions at the bottom of the door. Is the door dragging on carpeting or being caught on something on the floor? It may be a matter of simply clearing away the obstruction.

Man Considers Having a Child With His Partner
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a reasonably healthy 80-year-old man who is fortunate enough to have a partner of child-bearing age. She would like to bear us a child, but I am concerned about any potential problems with my old genes and any birth defects that might be caused by them. Please help us decide. -- R.B.
ANSWER: This is a question I usually hear from my patients when they are in their 60s or 70s. Eighty is quite old to be considering fathering a child. The first issue is that men get less fertile as we age. Older men are less likely to get their partners pregnant, and this difference is apparent by the age of 35. There are not good data for potential fathers in their 80s.
If you and your partner do have a successful pregnancy, there is an increased risk of deleterious genetic conditions and birth defects that are more likely in children who have older fathers. Down syndrome, which is normally associated with an advanced maternal age, is also more common among the offspring of older fathers.
Some heart conditions are more common. Epilepsy and schizophrenia are more common as well, as are autism spectrum disorders. Some cancer rates are increased. Babies are more likely to have a low birth weight, be born premature, and require the neonatal ICU.
However, the magnitude of the effect is modest. On average, 1 in 50 pregnancies with a father under the age of 30 will have one of the common health conditions that are studied in couples. With children who have a father over 50, the rate is 1 in 38. Even though the odds are that you would have a healthy child, the likelihood of a significant health issue for a man over 80 will be substantially more concerning. There just aren’t data for men as old as you are that can give us a reliable estimate.
Another issue to consider is whether you will be around to see your child grow up and be there as a father. The average 80-year-old man has a life expectancy of just under eight years. If you are substantially healthier than average, or if your parents lived for a very long time, this number could be better. But the average 80-year-old (assuming your partner has the child while you are still 80) is not likely to see their child reach their 10th birthday. The early death of a father has a negative impact on the physical and mental health of a child.
I conclude that there are significant risks in bringing a child into the world at your age.
DR. ROACH WRITES: I got my first dose of Shingrix in 2022 and forgot to get the second. Do I need to get two more doses now or just one? -- L.B.S.
ANSWER: According to the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, the vaccine series does not need to be restarted, and you can just take the second dose.
However, this type of delayed administration hasn’t been thoroughly tested. I’ve had patients come back several years after the first dose and elect to redo the whole series just to be sure.

Wake up, children of today. It's a really depressing time of year for us senior citizens. We are getting older. Sicknesses come, and so does bad weather. Do you care? You used to come visit on a weekly basis or call twice a week. Why don't you come see us now? You say "it's too far to drive, it's over an hour and a half away,” but you can travel to the mountains or go on a holiday cruise. As seniors, we see this as you don't care any more about Mom and Dad. Some day, you will care, but will that be too late? What's wrong with the world today? Remember, we are your family. Driving Is Not A Game
On Friday, December 13th, my wallet was lost at Walmart in Batavia, or I possibly left it at the cashier. When I got home, I realized it was not in my purse and panicked. My husband and I drove back to the store, and someone had turned it into the customer service counter. I asked if they knew who turned it in, but they did not know. I want whoever did this to know, I am sincerely grateful. I have had a very tough year. You have no idea how grateful I am to whoever did this and I wish I could thank you personally.
Unfortunately, today it seems many drivers look at driving as a game - swerving, jumping lights, going through stop signs - with no regard to the ramifications if someone is in their way. Vehicles are not toys. Recently I was rear-ended at a busy intersection going into work. I was told that the foot slipped off the brake. Luckily, I wasn't physically hurt. My family has had some very challenging times the past few months and things were finally getting better. The car I was driving is brand new - Less than 2 months before, our previous car had been totaled by a driver who left the scene. To be told by the driver that hit me the other morning that insurance is for when you make mistakes doesn't cut it. As my parents taught me, when you get into a car you are responsible for your life and other people's lives. Think about it.

Poetic Pioneer

Though her life was brief, Adelaide Crapsey le an indelible mark on the literary world with her innovative poetry and keen intellect. Born in Brooklyn in 1878 but raised in Rochester, Crapsey is best remembered as the creator of the cinquain, a five-line poetic form that has inspired countless writers since her time. Her work, marked by its precision and poignancy, captures a unique voice that continues to resonate today.
Crapsey grew up in a household that valued education and creativity. Her father, Algernon Sidney Crapsey, was a progressive Episcopal minister who o en sparked controversy with his sermons. Her family’s intellectual environment fueled Adelaide’s love of language and learning. She excelled academically, graduating as valedictorian from Rochester’s Free Academy and later attending Vassar College, where she became deeply interested in poetry and classical literature.
Herearlycareerwasspentasateacher,includingastintatthe KemperHallSchoolinWisconsin.ButCrapsey’srealpassionlay in writing. By her late 20s, she began experimenting with poetic forms, particularly influenced by Japanese haiku and tanka, as well as Greek and Latin verse. Her fascination with brevity and structure led her to create the cinquain: a five-line poem with a strict syllabic pattern of 2-4-6-8-2. is form allowed her to convey profound ideas in a compact, elegant style.
Despite her literary promise, Crapsey faced significant challenges. In 1911, she was diagnosed with tuberculosis, a disease that would eventually take her life. During her illness, she returned to Rochester to recuperate, spending her final years in a small cottage on the grounds of the Rochester Seminary, where her father served as chaplain. It was during this period that she wrote some of her most powerful poetry, reflecting on mortality, beauty, and the fleeting nature of life.
Her most famous collection, Verse, was published posthumously in 1915, a year a er her death at the age of 36. e book received critical acclaim, with reviewers praising her ability to distill complex emotions into a few carefully chosen words. Cinquains like November Night showcase her mastery of imagery and rhythm:

Crapsey’s contributions to literature extended beyond her poetry. She was also a scholar and critic, completing a significant study, A Study in English Metrics, which remains a foundational text for students of prosody. Her analytical mind

While her work gained recognition a er her death, Crapsey’s legacy was firmly rooted in Rochester. Her love for the region’s natural beauty o en informed her poetry, and her life in the city connected her to a community of artists and intellectuals who supported her work. Today, she is honored with a historical marker at her former home in Rochester and remembered as one of the city’s most important literary figures.
Adelaide Crapsey’s story is one of resilience and innovation. She turned personal hardship into art, creating a poetic form that remains influential more than a century later. Her voice, though quiet and contemplative, carries the weight of a writer who understood the power of words to capture the essence of the human experience.
Crapsey is buried in Rochester’s Mount Hope Cemetery with her family, and some postulate that she continues to cra cinquains from her grave. Find her November Night poem on the Poet’s Walk outside the Memorial Art Gallery, and her poetic legacy lives on through the poets across Western NY.
Rochester’s Just Poets group cra ed a series of linked cinquainsinhonorofAdelaideCrapsey, Cinquainicity,published in 2009, and several members cra ed their own linked cinquain chapbooks in subsequent years, including Sueann Wells’ Seasons of Life, a journey through a year of cinquains inspired simultaneously by Western NY seasons and human growth and maturity.
