DINING OUT WITH CHILDREN Active children can learn table manners and restaurant behavior early on through practice. These lessons can open children up to new food experiences and help them grow accustomed to social settings. Do not set your child up to fail by selecting a restaurant that is too fancy or quiet. Save those restaurants for when your company is adults only. A place that is used to noise (and moderate mess) is better. Bring along some games, toys and other trinkets to keep their attention. Try playing games, such as counting the packets of sugar or finding people wearing red shirts. Avoid dining out with a tired child, and be prompt in selecting meals and eating. This is not a time to linger, as youngsters’ attention spans and willingness to sit still tend to be minimal. Be prepared to leave with a to-go box if a child proves unruly.

Sharew ith 259,20 0 readers!

Saturday, November 9, 2019, we laid our Mom, Georgeia Defoe, to rest. My two wonderful nieces, Bobbie Jo and niece-in-law, Lindsay Passamonte put together all by themselves a wonderful luncheon for after the service. These two girls did everything: Beef on Wick, mac salad, toss salad and fixin’s, cookie trays, On several different occasions, someone has ranted on how their neighbor cuts/mows his or her lawn late, disturbing the peace of others. All I can say or add is that perhaps you should just be happy that they keep their lawn up and keep the grass cut. Imagine having a neighbor who lives in a nice neighborhood or tract, and who doesn’t seem to think that his lawn needs to be mowed? It’s not only unsightly, but it speaks volumes as to what type of people live there, also. So, look on the bright side of things and be happy that they keep their lawn up!

Why do people feel the need to mow early morning? Can town

coffee, water and soda, the linens on tables, plates, silverware, salt, pepper and serving spoons. Now mind you, each have little boys, which kiddos were with their fathers as they cared for them. Plus, Bobbie Jo gave the four of us children a beautiful key chain with an angel wing on it, and in the middle was the word, “MOM,” and a saying: “I have a guardian Angel in Heaven. I call her Mom.” These two ladies need to know how much this has meant to me, my brother and two sisters. Thank you! Love, Aunt Di Even the rains on Halloween could not dampen the spirits of if you would have scratched or dented it! Thank you for not causing a head on collision Thursday,7:50 AM on [local road] near the [local business]. Now you understand why there is a no passing zone near (and including the top of the little hill, it has a blind spot there!). I loved coming over the hill to see you in my lane, head on, with you to over correct and barely fit through the spot made as the car you were trying to pass pulled to the shoulder! It could have been a school bus or another poor unsuspecting driver, but it was me, a mom of two! You showed lack of common sense, blatant disregard for rules, carelessness!

Thought I would share what I read as food for thought. Neighbors who

generally better! You have bad yard art? The pieces are so ugly they’re awesome but only to you. The neighbors, on the other hand, may not appreciate it. One ironic yard piece is enough. You never say hello? You don’t have to be best friends with your neighbors or even know their names- though, why not? However, refusing to say hello when you see each other breaks the norm of neighborliness. A friendly hello now and again is great for community relations. Let’s ask ourselves: What kind of neighbor am I? To all the neighbors who wave to me as they drive by, accept my thanks!

Let’s all remember that the holidays don’t go from Halloween to Christmas. Thanksgiving Day is so important as most of us have much to be thankful for. A day for sharing a meal with loved ones, no stress over shopping for “the right gift”. The only stress, trying to save room for pie! Yes, there are a lot of things wrong with our country, but there is a lot more that’s right. Sure, we can all find something to be thankful for on Thanksgiving Day and every day. I would like to thank HFL Cougars for a great season. You guys showed lot of heart especially being a man down. Thank you, Bobby Richardson alma mater 1973!

and get it for me. I got there and punched in the number. The lady had a complaining attitude about their busyness and a scowl on her face. She questioned whether I tracked it right, questioned if it was my right name. I answered of course to both questions. It took her less than five minutes to get it for me, yet she continued to kind of scold me. When I was in retail, I did things with a smile and went an extra mile. Yes, I will wait for email next time instead of being treated like this. I only did this this time because I wasn’t sure if I would be able to pick up during the rest of week. I will still shop there, but I hope there won’t be a repeat of this.

Wayland & Springwater American Legions Surf and Turf a Lip-Smacking Success! By Amanda Dudek

T

he Wayland American Legion has a vision to make a piece of property of which it has been given stewardship in Wayland into a memorial park. In order to successfully launch fundraising efforts to develop the park, the Wayland and Springwater American Legions worked in collaboration with the Wayland Rotary assisted by the Wayland Auxiliary to throw a Surf and Turf fundraiser dinner on Saturday, November 2nd. “We are starting our fundraising project,” said Kevin Mark, Post Commander of American Legion Theodore R. Van Tassel Post 402 in Wayland. “B & E Depot did a fundraiser a few weeks before the dinner and sent us a check, but this will be our first big event.” The Legion hopes to break ground next spring. What would turn out to be a very successful evening, sponsored by local business Valley Fuel, opened with cocktails at 5:00pm. Shortly after, the room was filled with guests, and the line, which snaked around itself, was overflowing out the door. As friends and neighbors continued to arrive, the buzzing grew until the room was absolutely swelling with conversation. The group appeared to be a happy crowd, and many seemed to know each other well, shouting hellos, striking up conversations and waving across the room. People ordered drinks, perused the raffle items and found their seats to the backdrop of country and oldies music provided by The Spare parts, a bass, drums and vocals ensemble complete with disco ball. As the hour approached, the room was quickly filling to capacity of what would be a sold-out house. “The guest count had to be stopped at 200 due to space,” said Mark. “We easily could have sold more!”

Around 8:00pm, as guests enjoyed their choice of dessert bars or brownie with their coffee, the raffles began. Cash raffle prizes of $100 and $200 respectively were generously donated by Valley Fuel. The $100 prize was won by Brock Baird, who in like spirit, donated it back to the Point Project, and the $200 prize was happily won by a little girl. Other raffle prizes included a Christmas tree, an overnight and dinner for two at the Esperanza in Penn Yan, two separate beer-filled coolers, a wooden holiday snowman holding a gift certificate to the Village Clipper, an attractive bandana wreath, two collections of scratch offs, a wooden tray with wine and other items and a mule basket. Afterwards guests slowly filtered out, although many clustered in groups to chat around tables and drinks, clearly reluctant to end such an enjoyable evening. “We would like to thank Cory Mark Farms of Wayland for donating the potatoes,” said Mark. “We would also like to thank the Wayland Rotary, assisted by the Wayland Legion Auxiliary. Their kitchen staff was the backbone of this successful event. The community really came together, and we are grateful!” The American Legion Post 402 is currently planning to host two more fundraisers, although the details have not yet been determined.

Delicious flavors were served up in large portions at the American Legion in Wayland!

At 6:00pm, guests were called up for the dinner of their choice by table. The Surf and Turf Dinner, also referred to as a Lobster Bake, included one’s choice of a lobster or ribeye steak meal for a very reasonable $25 and one’s choice of a surf & turf or double lobster at $35. The ribeye steak, cooked over a fire pit behind the building by steak connoisseurs Bob Fleishman and his wife, was a tender, juicy medium rare, and the portions were quite generous, including quite possibly the largest baked potatoes in the area. The tables and sides included corn on the cob, sweet coleslaw, rolls and huge baked potatoes to accompany the show-stopping proteins. Cups of melted butter were provided, and scissors and sour cream graced each table alongside traditional salt and pepper shakers. Guests Amanda and her husband, John, remarked that the large boiled lobsters were sweet and delicious. The fresh lobsters had been brought in from Maine for the occasion, thanks to Dustin and Fred Shutt, and cooked to perfection thanks to Legion chef extraordinaire, Bon Regelsberger. Fellow guests Elizabeth and Paul added that, “You definitely got what you paid for!” The fact that the roaring swell had been reduced to a low hum was perhaps the greatest compliment.

HOROSCOPE ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A long-sought workplace change could be happening soon. Consider reworking your ideas and preparing a presentation just in case. A personal relationship takes a new turn. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your persuasiveness doesn’t really start to kick in until midweek. By then, you can count on having more supporters in your camp, including some you doubted would ever join you. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Your workload is still high, but -- good news! -- you should start to see daylight by the week’s end. Reserve the weekend for fun and games with friends and loved ones. You deserve it. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Regardless of how frustrating things are, keep that “Crab” under control. A cutting comment you might think is apt right now will leave others hurting for a long time to come. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Be more sensitive to the emotions of loved ones who might feel left out while you’re stalking that new opportunity. Be sure to make it up to them this weekend. A nice surprise could be waiting. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) The gregarious Virgo rarely has a problem making new friends. But repairing frayed relationships doesn’t come easily. Still, if it’s what you want to do, you’ll find a way. Good luck. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A misunderstanding with a partner or spouse needs to be worked out before it turns into something really nasty. Forget about your pride for now and make that first healing move. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Communication dominates the week. Work out any misunderstandings with co-workers. Also get back in touch with old friends and those family members you rarely see. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) As busy as your week is, make time for someone who feels shut out of your life. Your act of kindness could later prove to be more significant than you might have realized. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Congratulations. Your busy workweek leads to some very satisfying results. Sports and sporting events are high on your weekend activities aspect. Enjoy them with family and friends. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Your generosity of spirit reaches out once again to someone who needs reassurance. There might be problems, but keeping that line of communication open eventually pays off. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) You are among the truth-seekers in the universe, so don’t be surprised to find yourself caught up in a new pursuit of facts to counter what you believe is an insidious exercise in lying. BORN THIS WEEK: You believe in loyalty and in keeping secrets. All things considered, you would probably make a perfect secret agent. (c) 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

It’s Best to Taper Off Heartburn Meds ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 61-year-old woman in fairly good health, except that I have been taking prescription omeprazole once a day for heartburn for at least 10 years, if not more. I’ve read articles that say this isn’t good to take long term like I’ve been doing. When I’ve tried to stop by using famotidine instead, I still suffer from heartburn throughout the day. I’ve raised my bed and tried sleeping in an upright position. Your thoughts, please. -- O.D.S. ANSWER: It certainly is a good idea to periodically review with your doctor all the medications you take to decide whether they are still necessary. It is very often the case that people are taking medications for unclear reasons, and the person who is prescribing it has been doing so without really thinking about whether the benefits still outweigh the risks, especially as people get older and may have acquired new conditions or had medication changes. Proton pump inhibitors like omeprazole frequently are prescribed for short-term use but end up being continued for years. Except in people who absolutely need it (such as people with Barrett’s esophagus), I agree with a trial of stopping and using H2 blockers like famotidine on an as-needed basis. I recommend a taper, not a sudden stop. Proton pump inhibitors are likely to increase the risk of infection, such as pneumonia (without acid in the stomach, bacteria are not killed as efficiently) and intestinal infections; may possibly increase the risk of osteoporosis; and probably reduce vitamin B-12 and iron absorption. Although there have been reports of increased risk of kidney disease and dementia, I doubt the actual clinical risk is significant. Still, there are enough possible adverse effects that it is worth balancing the risks against the benefits of reducing symptoms. I am glad you tried some nondrug therapies, as we doctors often do not emphasize how important they are. In addition to raising the head of the bed (bricks under the feet is traditional, but a foam wedge under the mattress is also effective), losing weight for those who would benefit, avoiding tobacco and alcohol, and not eating three hours before bedtime make drugs unnecessary for many. Some people benefit from eliminating certain foods, especially caffeine, chocolate and fatty or spicy foods. ***

DEAR DR. ROACH: I received literature in the mail about a new miracle cure for enlarged prostate. The ads state that the new pills shrink the prostate back to normal. Is there such a pill, or is this a scam? I am afraid it is pills filled with drywall dust. -- B.F. ANSWER: I’m afraid it’s more likely to be a scam than real, but there are a few herbal therapies that have been shown to help -- but not cure -- enlarged prostate glands in men. Saw palmetto is well-known, but most recently was found to be no better than placebo. Beta-sitosterol, cernilton and Pygeum africanum are all plant extracts with some evidence of benefit, at least when it comes to symptoms. You are quite correct that without independent laboratory verification, there is no way to be sure of the quality and purity of dietary supplements. They are not regulated the way prescription drugs (or even foods) are. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. It was in the latter part of the 16th century that a French surgeon named Ambroise Pare began tying off the broken blood vessels with cord. That's pretty much what surgeons do today.

Home For The Holidays

(NAPS)—With today’s technology, staying in touch with loved ones around the country—and the world—is easier than it’s ever been. We are connected to each other virtually day and night—from cell phones and video calls to social media, texting and e-mail. While we may rely on this technological closeness throughout the year, the holidays offer a unique opportunity to sit and spend time with family members, particularly older family members, whom we don’t see on a regular basis. This face-to-face time provides a chance to connect, catch up, and observe behaviors that may go undetected over the phone or through e-mail. Certain changes in these behaviors from year-to-year may indicate a need for long-term care. While each passing year will show some changes in an older family member’s capabilities and function, the list below provides common changes in behavior to watch for to get a better idea of where your loved ones stand functionally. It’s important not to focus on the behavior itself, but rather the change in that behavior compared to what is considered normal for that person. For example, someone who has always been quiet and somewhat introverted would be held to a different standard than someone who is usually very outgoing and conversational, but now seems withdrawn and isolated. Based on the information you gather, it may be time to start thinking about your family’s plan for long-term care. The time to plan is now Millions of Americans require long-term care at some point during their lifetime. This type of care includes assistance with everyday activities, like bathing, dressing and eating, or supervision due to a severe cognitive impairment, like Alzheimer’s disease. Surprisingly, the type of care needed to provide assistance with these activities can be expensive and is generally not covered by traditional health plans or Medicare. In many cases, taking care of an older relative often falls on family members or friends. However, depending on the location of family members and friends, this support is often not available or may be a bigger challenge than many expect or are willing to take on. Take a closer look By paying attention to some common behaviors, you can begin to determine whether a loved one is having difficulty performing everyday activities. Noticing changes in behavior that may be due to an emerging physical or cognitive impairment is an important first step. Based on what you observe, the Federal Long Term Care Insurance Program (FLTCIP) may be worth considering when developing your family’s plan for long-term care. Cleanliness of the home: Is there clutter in the hallways, stacked mail, uncleaned dishes, etc.? Social interaction: Are they engaged with friends and family, getting out and about, and continuing social interaction at their normal level? Personal hygiene and care: Are activities like regular bathing, laundry, grooming, etc., taking place? Level of independence: Has the level of reliance on a spouse or guest for various things increased (e.g., getting a glass of water, answering the phone or doorbell, etc.)? Financial health: Are bills piling up, being paid on time, etc.? Mental sharpness: Is your loved one participating in conversations, staying up-to-date with the news or favorite sports team, etc.? Nutritional balance: Maintaining normal eating habits, food within “best by” ranges, cupboards stocked, etc.? How did you answer? Mostly unchanged The best time for you and your family members to consider long-term care insurance is long before it’s needed. Because the FLTCIP is medically underwritten, it’s important to apply while you’re still in good health to avoid the risk that a future illness or medical condition may prevent you from obtaining coverage later. Also, premiums are directly related to age. This means that premiums tend to be lower for younger applicants.

A Look Back… MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Nov. 22, 1718, Edward Teach, also known as Blackbeard, is killed off North Carolina's Outer Banks during a battle with a British navy force. In 1717, Teach took over a captured French merchantman from a retired pirate, increased its armament to 40 guns and renamed it the Queen Anne's Revenge. * On Nov. 23, 1936, the first issue of the magazine Life is published. When the original Life folded during the Great Depression, publisher Henry Luce bought the name and relaunched the magazine as a picture-based periodical. * On Nov. 24, 1947, the House of Representatives votes 346 to 17 to hold 10 Hollywood writers, directors and producers in contempt for refusing to cooperate at hearings dealing with communism in the movie industry. It marked the start of a "blacklist" of names of Hollywood personalities suspected of having communist ties.

STRANGE BUT TRUE by Samantha Weaver * Did you know that in a random group of 23 people, there's a 50% likelihood that two will share a birthday? It seems counterintuitive -- there are, after all, 365 days in a year -- but the number-crunchers assert that it's true. In a group of 57 people, it's almost certain that two of them will have the same birthday -- the chances are more than 99%. Once you get up to 124 people, the chances are only 1 in 100 trillion that there [SET ITAL]won't[END ITAL] be a duplicated birthday.

DID YOU KNOW? Oxygen is essential for the roots of grass to breathe and grow strong enough to support healthy lawns. But according to the Center for Agriculture, Food and the Environment at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, compacted soil can produce a decrease in oxygen content that can make it hard for roots to thrive. Soil compaction can result from a number of activities, including walking on grass or driving or parking vehicles on grass. When soil is compacted, it breaks into small particles that reduce the amount of pore space in the soil. That makes it hard for water, oxygen and nutrients to get through, threatening the strength of the roots and putting the grass in jeopardy. Aerating a lawn can help homeowners foster strong root growth and healthy grass. When to aerate may be contingent upon local climate, so homeowners who suspect the soil in their yards is compact should consult with a local landscaping professional to determine the best time to aerate their lawns.

DANGEROUS AIRBAGS AFFECT MILLIONS OF DRIVERS

Call Joe Appliance Sales & Service 10 Main Street, Bloomfield 585-394-1880 • 585-657-4470 Sales/Service/Parts Servicing most brands for 42 years.

(NAPSI)—Roughly 37 million vehicles—across all makes and models— have dangerous, recalled airbags that need to be replaced immediately and they’re FREE. In the event of a crash, the faulty airbags can explode with sharp metal fragments, causing serious injury or even death to the driver or passengers. The easiest way to check if your vehicle has a defective airbag is to find your vehicle’s 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN), typically located on the driver’s side dashboard by the windshield and on vehicle registration and insurance documents. Next, visit CheckToProtect.org and enter the VIN. Within seconds, you’ll learn whether the vehicle has an open airbag safety recall. If you do have an open airbag recall, call your dealer immediately to set up a FREE repair. Recall repairs are FREE and will always be done at an authorized dealer, even if you purchased the vehicle somewhere else. Alternative transportation may be available at some dealers. Even after you’ve checked your vehicle, it’s important to set a reminder to check every six months for airbag and other safety recall notices. Recalls are announced by automakers throughout the year, and if you miss a recall announcement—or have lost touch with your original dealer—you could be driving a vehicle with a dangerous safety recall. To help protect your family and friends from these dangerous airbags, encourage everyone you know to Check To Protect today.

Fall is a great time to enjoy the great outdoors. Beautiful fall foliage coupled w ith great w eather compel many people to spend ample time outdoors before the arrival of harsh w inter w eather drives them back indoors.

Rachel Harris Thayer (Angelo) November 9, 2019 Honeoye/Livonia: Rachel passed peacefully on November 9, 2019 at age 88 years. Predeceased by her first husband Leon E. Harris and her second husband Victor E. Thayer, her parents Ralph and Teresa (Powell) Angelo, and her siblings Fran Van De Bogart and Tom Angelo. Survived by children; Harold (Robyn) Harris of Lima, Joann ( John) King of Lakeville, Scott (Peggy) Harris of Honeoye, and Todd Harris of Pittsford; step-children Alice (Tom) Mann of CA and Victor (Amy) Thayer of Mendon; 6 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; siblings, Ann Schunk, Ralph Angelo, Bill Angelo, Rick Angelo, Jake Angelo, and Kathi Czebatol. Rachel is also survived by many other loving family and friends including many nieces and nephews. Special thank you to Nancy Angelo and Connie Gilderhus for their loving kindness in Rachel’s final days. Rachel was an LPN for 42 years, finishing her career as a nurse at the Conesus Lake Nursing Home. She enjoyed watching sports and actually attended nine Super Bowl games. Her love and caring for others continued when she began to reside in Senior Living Homes as she would often take others less fortunate under her wing and make sure that they felt special each day. An incredible Mother to all who knew her, Rachel had an amazing way of making everyone feel loved and of value. From the Pinehurst to the Highlands of Pittsford to Heather Heights to the Jewish Home and finally to the Medical Intensive Care Unit at Strong Memorial Hospital, Queen Rachel could be found holding court with residents, staff and nurses always mesmerized by her strength, wisdom and the love for life that she displayed. Matthew 25:21 describes her welcome into heaven: “Well done, good and faithful servant.” Family and friends called on Thursday, November 14th, from 4-8PM at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home Inc., 21 Big Tree Street, Rte 20A, Livonia, NY. Rachel’s Funeral Mass was held at 10AM on Friday, November 15th, at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 6591 Richmond Mills Road, Rte 20A, Livonia, NY. A luncheon after the mass was followed by Burial at Temple Hill Cemetery, Geneseo, NY. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association, 1595 Elmwood Ave. # B1, Rochester, NY 14620. TACKLING THE ULTIMATE WORKFORCE CHALLENGE (NAPSI)—Today, many people in business talk of diversity fatigue, says Barbara Adams, PsyD, author of “Women, Minorities, & Other Extraordinary People: The New Path for Workforce Diversity” (Greenleaf Book Group Press). But, she adds, that means “we’ve momentarily lost sight of the magnitude of opportunity before us.” Her book can serve people in leadership positions who recognize, “the tremendous strategic value of having diverse, inclusive workforces,” but have struggled to commit to it. For all the many well-meaning diversity initiatives that organizations have undertaken lately, “personal mindsets and beliefs are what count,” she writes.

“People in leadership positions,” Dr. Adams adds, “have the ability to replace judgment and bias that naturally occur in us with curiosity about differences.” And that, she concludes, is “truly the beginning of embracing the opportunity that lies in workforce diversity and inclusion” and can make companies and organizations more successful. Her book reframes the journey ahead through an organizational lens, highlighting the importance of cultural norms, challenging misconceptions, and providing research and practical tools.
