Resale value may not be foremost on the minds of new car ow ners, but the earlier buyers begin to factor resale value into their carcare routines, the more they w ill benefit dow n the road. HOW TO SAFELY NAVIGATE WET ROADS Fall is a great time of year to hit the open road, as fall foliage is colorful and provides a wonderful backdrop for weekend getaways, while the mild temperatures of fall make this an ideal time to enjoy the great outdoors. Though autumn is often a mild time of year with regard to weather, fall foliage enthusiasts can still encounter adverse conditions on road trips. According to the automotive group AAA, wet pavement contributes to nearly 1.2 million traffic accidents each year. When combined with fall leaves, wet pavement poses an even greater threat to drivers and their passengers. Autumn and precipitation do not necessarily go hand in hand, but drivers should still exercise caution during the fall road trip season so they can better handle roadways that are wet and covered in fallen leaves.

LOCAL DINING SPOTS FOSTER COMMUNITY Dining out is a great way to celebrate life’s milestones or simply reconnect with friends and loved ones. Research firm NPD Group found that, by the end of 2015, restaurant visits by consumers increased by 700 million compared to just five years prior. While chain restaurants invest heavily in advertising, independently owned restaurants do not have those same resources. Multi-unit chains also have more pull with suppliers and might be able to negotiate better deals, or can spread operational costs across various locations. Too often diners are not aware of the vast array of tasty, well-priced and artisanal foods awaiting them just down the street. Much can be said about the advantages of patronizing local eateries. Men and women who want unique dining experiences can give local, independently owned establishments a try.

Shopping local helps grow your community's economy. According to the American Independent Business Alliance (AIBA), when you shop local, approximately 48% of the cost of your purchase is recirculated back into the local economy. When you shop at a chain store, that number drops to only 14%. Instead of taking your hard-earned dollars to a billion-dollar chain store, think about how beneficial it would be to invest them in your local economy and help support a small business owner's family. Every dollar helps, especially around the holidays.

Live trees and their pine-like aroma can be especially nostalgic trees to include in holiday plans. The National Christmas Tree Association says that approximately 25 to 30 million real Christmas trees are sold in the United States every year. North American trees hail from all 50 states and areas of Canada.
Starting Wednesday, November 25th thru end of Christmas Day!

Germany is credited with starting the Christmas tree tradition as we now know it in the 16th century when devout Christians brought decorated trees into their homes. Some built Christmas pyramids of wood and decorated them with evergreens and candles if wood was scarce. It is a widely held belief that Martin Luther, the 16th-century Protestant reformer, first added lighted candles to a tree. Walking toward his home one winter evening, composing a sermon, he was awed by the brilliance of stars twinkling amidst evergreens. To recapture the scene for his family, he erected a tree in the main room and wired its branches with lighted candles. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

WAYS TO MAKE HOMES SAFER Improving traction around the house also can minimize falls. Throw rugs and runners can be made more secure with nonslip rubber backings. Bath rugs can reduce slipping on wet surfaces in the bathroom. Also, nonslip mats can be used inside of showers and bathtubs. Use shoe trays to reduce puddling from melting snow or rain runoff in entryways. Mop up spills quickly, and consider the use of matteor textured-finished flooring to improve stability underfoot. Promptly remove snow and ice from driveways and walkways. For those who live in cold climates, heated concrete can help melt precipitation before it accumulates.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Using the Internet to Enrich Our Lives With most of us spending most of our days at home, it’s time for us to take advantage of the internet. Here are some resources that can enrich our lives. Inquire at the local senior center about any exercise classes online. Some classes will be live on Zoom and others will be videos that the instructors record and post on the center’s website. If they’re not hosting any classes, search online for “seniors exercise at home” and look for some that are produced by other senior centers. Virtual art classes can open up new areas of interest and reveal talents you didn’t know you had. Better yet, if you’re a beginner or are exploring a new art medium, look for videos that you can review over and over. Look online for free art classes online for seniors. Exercise and art aren’t the only free classes you’ll find online. Yoga and tai chi, sewing, baking and cake decorating, creative writing, a new language -- if it can be done online, there’s a class for it somewhere. And don’t forget Class Central (www.classcentral.com). Check the website for a list of MOOCS (massive open online courses). There 15,000 different free and low-cost classes in its searchable database from colleges and universities around the world. Imagine taking a philosophy course from the University of Edinburgh or Introduction to Classical Music via Yale University. (I put art history into its search box and got back 165 results.) Read the details for any class you’re considering. It will tell you if the class is self-paced, whether it’s free to audit, the class level and how much time per week you can expect to spend on the work, as well as reviews from other students. If you’re unsure of your internet skills, search for “internet basics for seniors” on Google.
This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

TRY A TASTE OF HISPANIC HERITAGE (NAPSI)—National Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to acknowledge the history, culture and contributions of the people of Mexico, the Caribbean, Central and South America, and Spain. One of the best ways to celebrate, many say, is with food. Making that easy is one restaurant chain that’s having a year-round love affair with Latin and Hispanic cuisine. Long known for its authentic Tex-Mex roots, Church’s Chicken®/Texas Chicken® has spent years championing the commemorative period—which runs from September15 to October 15th—on a global stage. The first Hispanic influence on the company’s menu was the jalapeño pepper—the very first side item ever offered at the restaurant chain. The peppers were added to the menu due to a San Antonio tradition of squeezing their juice over various foods to give them a south-of-theborder style “kick” of heat and spice. The restaurant’s sister brand, Texas Chicken, features the Mexicana Burger on menus worldwide. This tasty chicken burger is a fiesta of tastes and textures, with a juicy hand-battered chicken breast fillet that’s topped “taco style” with cheese, fresh lettuce, tomato, spicy mayo, crunchy tortilla chips and chopped onions. NOW HERE'S A TIP By JoAnn Derson * Five ways to keep yourself from turning up the thermostat this winter: Put on a sweater; have a nice bowl of soup or stew; wear slippers or thick nonskid socks, grab a comfy blanket; snuggle up with someone special.

SEPTIC TANK PUMPING
* “If you bathe in a tub, try rubbing on bath oil before getting in the tub. You will get greater coverage and more moisturizing power from your bath oil. And at this time of year, who doesn’t need that?” -- M.E. in Washington * “Here’s a great way to use Christmas cards from last year: Trace a child’s hand on the back of the pictures. Cut them out and use them to make a wreath for the front door. Or, make small jigsaw puzzles for young children to play with. Any good, detailed artwork on a card front will do. Make squiggly lines in the fashion of a jigsaw puzzle, then cut out. It helps if the cardstock is good and thick.” -- M.M. in Utah * “To keep light bulbs from sticking in the socket, apply petroleum jelly to the base of the bulb before screwing it into the fixture.” -- B.D. in Virginia * Here’s an oldie but a goodie: Add a few drops of water to votive cups before adding a candle. The wax will float on the water, and when the candle burns down, it won’t get stuck in the votive glass.

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Pets Must Adapt to Winter Weather --Q: My springy little mutt, “Sandy,” just loves winter! Whenever it snows, she runs right outside to play. We had an early snowstorm just before Halloween, and I let her out to play. When she came back in after about an hour, she was whimpering and limping. I didn’t see any cuts on her paws, but she was shivering quite a bit. I wrapped her in a towel and held her on my lap for a while. I guessing she got cold and scared, but that has never happened to her before. She usually stays outside for at least an hour and I have to call her back in. -- Daryl J., Leominster, Massachusetts A: You did the right thing by checking Sandy as she came inside and warming her up. If she doesn’t display any unusual behavior going forward, then your first guess is correct, that she got mild hypothermia from being out in the snow. Pets need to acclimate to changing temperatures in the fall and winter. A cold snap in the fall can feel more bitter than colder but steady winter temperatures. Other factors can also put a dog at risk for hypothermia. Make sure that Sandy always has water in her bowl, and that water is available during her outside romps, as hydration helps to maintain body temperature. Excessively wet or snowy conditions can speed heat loss. Providing a sheltered spot outdoors will give Sandy a place to take breaks and dry out. A cold injury can take longer to recover from than we realize. For now, limit Sandy’s time outside in the cold to about 30 minutes, and check on her every 10 minutes. If she is shivering or whimpering, bring her inside. And if you have continuing concerns, don’t hesitate to contact the veterinarian.

STRANGE BUT TRUE By Lucie Winborne * Doctors who perform laparoscopic surgery, which involves inserting a tiny camera into a patient’s body through a small incision, have better coordination if they play video games at least three hours per week. According to a 2003 study, gamer surgeons made 37% fewer errors and worked 27% faster than those whose only “video game” experience was the surgery itself.

Can They Give Gifts to Their Doctor? ---

DEAR DR. ROACH: We are very fond of our family doctor. I was in to see him the other day, and it came up in conversation that he was going to be getting married. We would like to acknowledge this event in his life with either a lovely card or a small gift. I know the old-school way of thinking is to never do things that are so personal when it comes to your physician. Do you think that still holds true today? -- N.W. ANSWER: Physicians are human beings, and a thoughtful card is always appreciated. Gifts can sometimes be OK, but the American Medical Association has some guidelines for physicians on accepting gifts. I agree with them and you might find them helpful: • Be sensitive to the size of the gift: Inappropriately large gifts should not be accepted. • Do not let a gift influence patient care. • Decline a gift that would present an emotional or financial hardship to the patient’s family. • Consider suggesting a charitable contribution in lieu of a gift. I would add that sometimes rejecting a gift can be hurtful, and if accepting a gift conforms to the guidelines, I generally accept it with thanks.
DID YOU KNOW? Men and women often make an effort to lose weight before special events such as weddings or vacations. While many people do so in healthy ways, others take their weight loss efforts to the extreme. For example, many brides-to-be aspire to shed excess weight before their weddings so they can look as slim as possibly in their wedding gowns. The New York Times even reported in 2012 on a bride who spent eight days on a feeding tube to strictly limit calories so she could fit into her wedding dress. Such efforts are dangerous and could put individuals’ long-term health in serious jeopardy. Healthy weight loss for any occasion requires a long lead time, so that individuals can safely shed between one and two pounds per week with a healthy mix of diet and exercise, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Trimming between 500 and 1,000 calories per day from their diets can help individuals lose weight safely.

DR. ROACH WRITES: A recent column on easy bruising in older adults prompted several readers to recommend specialized makeup products to cover the discolored areas. That is not something I had considered, and I appreciate the recommendation. Another reader recommended dry skin brushing, but I could not find good evidence that this helps with skin discoloration. ***
Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual questions, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to ToYourGoodHealth@med.cornell.edu. © 2020 North America Synd., Inc. All Rights Reserved

• Use medications wisely. Be mindful of medications, making sure none of your pills fall on the floor where they can be gobbled up by pets.
Pets are a big part of people’s lives. They bring joy to young and old alike. With the young, they play and keep the kids out of trouble. For the old they bring a smile to their face, or pep them up. For the sick, they make people feel better and even improve how people heal and remember things long past. With the pandemic going on for the past 8 months or so, a lot of people have had to work from home or stay out of the limeight of the freedom of going out in the world as we have in the past. As a senior citizen I had a head start on this social distancing. Others had it forced upon them. If you have a pet, your pet becomes more responsive to having people around them 24/7. They can become depressed once things can go back to what we use to call normal. This can also be the case on the human end when a person losses a pet that was with them 24/7 for many years. The pet is more than a pet and more of a family member. The loss can be as bad as losing a family member with 2 legs. The pet (in my case a little Pomeranian that was with me for 17 years) was there without asking for more than a little love and kindness. In return they give you unconditional love and respect. You go out for a few minutes or hour, and when you come back you are greeted as if you just got home from being gone for a week. So you need to remember, when the time comes to leave the house for half the day for work or whatever is part of your plate, you need to think of your pet and what will go through their minds. Start by leading up to time spent away. When you leave the house, go out in the yard or go for a ride for small periods so the pet learns you will be coming back. If you know someone who losses a pet, show them some compassion. Give them some kind words; it will help them in their grieving, even more so if the are older.
Send us a photo and brief write-up of your pet and we’ll feature it. Email to: sales@gvpennysaver.com or mail to: P.O. Box 340; Avon, 14414. Pets will be published at discretion of GVPS. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Count Your
Blessings
BY STEVE HARRISON
I
t’s that time of year when we give “Thanks” for all that we have. Rather than recount the list of things we surely didn’t need in 2020, we could give thanks for those challenges that may have given us a new reason to be thankful. If we can take a moment to reflect rather than react, we can appreciate this saying: “Storms make trees take deeper roots.” Recently, in a Saturday Evening Post article, there was an interview with a girl who had taken a very bad fall and had become a quadriplegic. Asked by the interviewer, “Are you thankful?” and she replied, “Oh yes.” She then recounted why she was and how she overcame her circumstances. She counted her blessings. Not once, but twice a day, first in the morning when she awoke and at night before she went to sleep. It was not easy at first because she began dwelling on her injury, but slowly, she
thought of all the good in her life, even life itself. Soon, her attitude began to improve, and her outlook and hopes for a better life changed radically. (Her original prognosis was to be bedridden for the rest of her life.) She went back to school and graduated with a degree in science, then earned her master’s degree, and finally, went to work for the United Spinal Association as director. She also works with Google, Verizon, Microsoft and tech industry leaders, helping design autonomous vehicles and augmented reality for the disabled. What a remarkable story of courage and fortitude! And she attributes so much of her transformation into being thankful for who she is, and the blessings she has. Let’s be sure to count ours.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Nice Gesture Recently, my 85-year-old wife went to [local business]. In a rainy downpour, she tried to park between two cars, one of which was not quite straight. She scraped the fender of the car. No one was around, so she went shopping. When she came out, some lady said, “I saw you. I saw you hit that car.” Out came [local business] security and a policeman. They exchanged licenses and insurance cards. Later that day, the woman, whose car had been scratched arrived at
our front door. She had a bouquet of flowers. She had noticed on the driver’s license that it was my wife’s birthday and so brought her a gift to calm her down. Very grateful! I just wanted to give a HUGE Thank You to the Angel that turned in my purse from the Batavia TOPS parking lot on November 2nd. Especially in the age of COVID-19 and with people hurting during the holidays, I am very, very grateful!

WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A TEAM PLAYER The ability to communicate, interact and work collectively with others is both a professional and personal asset. But in certain ways, the reliance on technology has made working as a team more complicated. People have grown accustomed to spending large quantities of time alone working at computers or on phones and tablets, potentially compromising their ability to work directly with others when the need arises. According to Monster.com, when it comes to choosing a candidate for a new job or promotion, employers consistently say they want a team player. That means it’s advantageous for professionals looking to further their careers to brush up on their team-building and social skills.

TACKLING THE ULTIMATE WORKFORCE CHALLENGE (NAPSI)—Today, many people in business talk of diversity fatigue, says Barbara Adams, PsyD, author of “Women, Minorities, & Other Extraordinary People: The New Path for Workforce Diversity” (Greenleaf Book Group Press). But, she adds, that means “we’ve momentarily lost sight of the magnitude of opportunity before us.” Her book can serve people in leadership positions who recognize, “the tremendous strategic value of having diverse, inclusive workforces,” but have struggled to commit to it. For all the many well-meaning diversity initiatives that organizations have undertaken lately, “personal mindsets and beliefs are what count,” she writes. “People in leadership positions,” Dr. Adams adds, “have the ability to replace judgment and bias that naturally occur in us with curiosity about differences.” And that, she concludes, is “truly the beginning of embracing the opportunity that lies in workforce diversity and inclusion” and can make companies and organizations more successful. Her book reframes the journey ahead through an organizational lens, highlighting the importance of cultural norms, challenging misconceptions, and providing research and practical tools. Autumn! sad, sighing, yet most lovely Autumn, again art thou here; and again with feelings “pleasant but mournful to my soul,” do I greet thy return. And the strangest feelings of mingled pleasure and pain are awakened at thy approach, though thou excitest emotions less rapturous and fancies less playful, yet hath thy presence for me a solace and a spell unfelt amid the greener verdure, brighter sunbeams and more fragrant flowers of Summer. Dearer to me than the clustering roses of June, are they withered stalk and falling leaf.... And for the heart, the busy, changeful human heart, thou hast a thousand stirring chords, whose vibrations awaken with an electric influence its slumbering sensibilities, and whose sympathetic music responds with all the truth of an echo. ~Elizabeth J. Eames, “An Autumn Reverie,” October 1840
