CHRISTMAS TREES

One of the most recognizable symbols of the holiday season, Christmas trees can be seen in private homes, public spaces and many prominent locations beginning each December. Christmas trees come in all shapes and sizes, and families may prefer certain types of trees, including aromas, needle types and fullness. Christmas trees have a diverse history.

Make a fresh cut to remove about a 1/2-inch thick disk of wood from the base of the trunk before putting the tree in the stand. Make the cut perpendicular to the stem axis. Don’t cut the trunk at an angle, or into a v-shape, which makes it far more difficult to hold the tree in the stand and also reduces the amount of water available to the tree.

Shoppers across the country routinely make the holiday season one of the biggest spending periods of the year. American Research Group, Inc., said that in 2015 the average predicted expenditure on gifts equaled $882, which was up from $861 the previous year. Many holiday shoppers worry about whether or not they will have enough money for gifts, while others anticipate using credit cards or other financing methods to stretch their abilities to spend even further. This can make the holiday season more stressful than it needs to be while affecting finances into the new year. Budgeting for the holidays is a great way to keep spending in check.

* Inexpensive gift idea: On the front of an empty photo album or scrapbook, print out and arrange color photos of your recipient in a collage. Glue the photos to the front of the album and cover with a decoupage glaze, like Mod Podge. Let dry and glaze again. You’ve just made a one-of-a-kind gift!

* If you are a re-gifter, always document from whom and in what year you received a gift. Then re-gift it to someone who will have little to no contact with that person. For example, if Aunt Emily from out of town sends you a lovely soap basket that you would never use, you could re-gift it for your office party.

* After-Christmas sales are a great time to buy not only gift wrap (look for solid colors that you can use all year long), holiday cards and decoration, but also next season’s winter wear. Things like scarves and gloves can be great bargains. And even coats can go on sale. Take advantage -- especially if you have kids -- and buy up.

* “Recycle in the new year by using wrapping supplies to help store your holiday decorations. The cardboard tube from gift wrap can be cut into smaller pieces, which you can wrap strands of tree or house lights around. Boxes can be put to use to hold ornaments or other decorations, and ribbon and bows that are still in good condition can be tucked away for re-use next year.” -- E.F. in Oregon

IT PAYS TO USE CRATES WHEN TRAINING PUPPIES Many dog owners, particularly those who have never before had a dog, may hesitate to employ crates to train their puppies. That’s understandable, as on the surface it can seem cruel or inhumane to confine a living animal to a cage. However, the AKC notes that dogs are den animals that naturally seek out canine caves for security. That’s true whether dog owners provide crates for their puppies or not. So while humans may see crates as cruel, dogs very likely view their crates as secure places where they can go if they get scared or feel skittish. In fact, according to the AKC, dogs’ perception of crates is one reason why dog owners typically find it relatively easy to get their dogs to adjust to crates and ultimately enjoy them.

FINANCING FUNERALS According to Lincoln Heritage Funeral Advantage, the average funeral costs between $7,000 and $10,000. It can be easy to overlook planning for such a large expense, and many people may think their funeral costs will be covered by their life insurance policies. However, that isn’t always the case and certain complications can arise. The funeral planning information guide Funeral Basics states that sometimes insurance policies become invalid if payments have not been made. Policies may have liens on them, or some named beneficiaries may no longer be alive. This can stall the process as issues are worked through. In addition, it can sometimes take between six and eight weeks for beneficiaries to receive life insurance policy payouts. Since many funerals take place within a week of a person’s death, it’s unlikely that surviving family members will be able to finance funerals with life insurance payouts. In addition, some policies may not be assignable, which means the benefits cannot be assigned to go to a third party who will file the claim for you (i.e., the funeral home or an assignment company with which the funeral home partners). It’s important to determine if an existing policy is assignable and to take appropriate measures if it is not. Individuals may want to consider burial insurance or preneed funeral insurance. Another option is to use preplanning services, which allow people to prepay for funeral expenses and make planning decisions regarding the services and burial so that family members will not be tasked with financing and/or planning a funeral during a difficult time in their lives.

*Please note, the Funeral Home will be operating at 33% capacity per state guidelines. New York State requires those in attendance to adhere to these guidelines including those related to social distancing and face coverings.

MATTERS OF RESPECT For those uninitiated in the ways of the Japanese, a Japanese wake offers powerful insight into a culture that combines Shinto and Buddhist traditions. The wake begins with arriving guests bearing monetary gifts that are sealed in special envelopes and tied up with black and white string. As the priest kneels before the coffin to recite a “sutra” (wise saying), the immediate family comes forward, one by one, to offer respect to the deceased. Typically, each mourner will remove granular incense from a bowl, hold it to his or her forehead, and drop the incense onto a burner. After that, each mourner will pray and bow to the portrait of the deceased, as well as bow to the immediate family. Reflecting our society’s complex relationships and increasing religious, racial, ethnic and cultural diversity, some of our ceremonies and memorials are more inclusive today than they were a few decades ago. KEVIN W. DOUGHERTY FUNERAL HOME accommodates all families. It is a commitment to our ethics, our morals, our standards, and to our community that has helped our funeral home become the pillar for so many families during the most difficult of times. To learn about our funeral services, please call (585) 346-5401. Please tour our facilities at Livonia and Honeoye, NY. DEAR DR. ROACH: I’m a 70-year-old female who had a stress test, echocardiogram and carotid study. I passed all tests. My cholesterol is 173, with my HDL 56, LDL 95.6 and triglycerides 108. My blood pressure is 110/64. The cardiologist put me on 5 mg of Crestor. He feels this will help my numbers. He also has me taking CoQ10 and vitamin D3 in case my legs start aching from the Crestor. I’ve been taking everything now for two weeks, and my legs are starting to ache. Is it really necessary to stay on Crestor? -- J.S. ANSWER: I put all your numbers into the standard risk calculator at www.cvriskcalculator.com, and your risk for heart disease or stroke in the next 10 years is 6.8%. That is in a range where medication therapy is not usually recommended. Of course, I can’t tell you to stop taking the medication your doctor has recommended. He may know something about you that I don’t. It’s possible you have a less-common risk factor your cardiologist may not have told you about. Some people with very good cholesterol and blood pressure numbers have high levels of C-reactive protein, for example, which confers an increased risk for heart disease. That’s true even in people with desirable cholesterol levels, and people in that situation would clearly benefit from taking Crestor or a similar medicine. All of these medicines have the risk of muscle aches, although the risk of serious muscle damage is |very small. Nearly everyone can reduce their heart disease risk by having a diet with very little meat but high in vegetables, legumes and nuts, along with whole grains and fruits. Regular moderate exercise is as important as diet. Keeping stress levels low, having good close relationships and sleeping 7-8 hours daily are underappreciated beneficial factors to reduce heart risk as well.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles

Pants on Fire! The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has put out a timely warning about fire safety, especially for seniors. The main statistic is grim: We seniors make up about 16% of the population, but account for a whopping 77% of all clothing fires. Cooking heads the list of dangers, with fires from the stovetop and oven. Closely following are fires from smoking and being outside burning trash and debris. Space heaters are on the list, of course. The advice from the experts: • Don't cook when you're wearing a bathrobe or anything with long, wide sleeves. Any loose clothing can catch fire if you're too close. • If you burn debris and trash outside, stay back from the fire. A better idea, however, is not to do any outdoor burning yourself. • Don't smoke in bed, ever. • Keep an eye on your space heater. It's far too easy to be too close to a space heater and not notice that your pants or robe are about to catch fire. • If the worst happens and your clothes catch fire, don't run! Drop to the floor and roll, and keep rolling until the fire is out. Grab a blanket if it's necessary to put the fire out. Call 911 and put cool water on your burns until help arrives. • Do you have a fire extinguisher? Did you know that the chemicals inside can expire? They will typically last from five to 15 years, so be sure to check yours.

ARE POINSETTIAS POISONOUS? The National Capital Poison Center notes that, in most cases, exposure to any part of a poinsettia plant in children or pets has little, if any, effect. However, if the plant is swallowed, some people and pets may experience symptoms including nausea, vomiting or diarrhea. Some who touch the plant may develop a rash after contact. While poinsettias are not deadly, the NCPC still advises those who plant to include the plant in their holiday decor to take every measure necessary to prevent children and pets from swallowing it. Placing poinsettias beyond the reach of kids and pets is one simple way to accomplish just that.

NOW HERE’S A TIP How to pack a suitcase: Roll pants and tops, adding to suitcase first, toward the handle side. Then add heavy items (shoes, boots) toward the wheel end. Make sure you choose the right size case for the trip; too much room will cause items to shift around.

T

he injustice has become so commonplace many of us no longer even notice it: a little girl sitting in her wheelchair as her brother or sister or friends swing happily, a father with depth perception difficulties unable to take his child through a play area, a grandmother with a walker unable to accompany her grandchild as he/she plays. Perhaps we think they do not wish to participate or that they are incapable of joining in, but sadly, the truth is that most existing play areas were simply not designed to for varying abilities. The result is an exclusion and isolation of people with varying abilities, heartbreakingly including children. Michael and Nanci Bentley of Canandaigua have experienced this unintentional exclusion firsthand. Their son, MJ, has a rare chromosomal disorder known as Pallister-Killian syndrome (PKS) which has broad impacts to the body to include loss of mobility, speech, hearing, vision, cognitive delays, and epilepsy. The Bentleys found that traditional playgrounds were simply not equipped to allow their son to participate or play with his friends. They realized the need for change. In 2017, the Bentleys attempted to assist a family in Denver, Colorado, which was working on a project to build a more inclusive play space. “Our physical therapist’s brother is a talk show host in Denver, and we were trying to connect the family to the station at which her brother worked,” explained Michael. “Our physical therapist said, “It is fine that you want to help others, but when are we going to get our playground?” For the Bentleys, her question became their challenge. “My wife, Nanci, and I spearheaded this project along with Pam Metting (Kiwanis) and Sonya Smith (physical therapist) who studied at the University of Buffalo,” said Michael. “We formed a committee and drafted preliminary play area designs and appealed to philanthropists who wanted to give back to the community.” The play area plans were designed by Landscape Structures from Amherst and the pavilion and facilities were designed by Kevin Connors from ego-logic and the universal design was completed Danise Levine of the University of Buffalo, an Architect and Assistant Director at the Center for Inclusive Design and Universal Access (IDEA), using its innovative solutions for Universal Design (isUD). The Bentley Family “This will be the first ISUD (Innovative Solutions for Universal Design) certified playground in the country,” shared Michael enthusiastically. “It is a park for people of all abilities rather than just for well-bodied people or people with disabilities. The play space’s designs incorporate inclusive features you wouldn’t necessarily notice such as lower counters, wider bathroom stalls, lower changing tables in the bathrooms, and no stairs.” The Bentley’s newly formed nonprofit, Inclusion in Motion, did not have to look far to find a home for its state-of-the-art playground. Pam Metting and Kiwanis of Canandaigua immediately joined in its efforts. “We cannot say enough great things about the Town of Canandaigua, Town Manager Doug Finch, and his team,” shared Michael. “They jumped right on board and have been very supportive ever since our concept’s inception.” The Town of Canandaigua donated the space on Town land to Inclusion in Motion for the planned half acre park play space which will become a town park upon the completion of the project. “There will be no other park like it in the world,” stated Michael. “It is going to be a major destination for the Town of Canandaigua and the Finger Lakes.” Fundraising for the universally designed park has presented unique challenges. “People are generally unaware that there isn’t a place for people of all abilities to play together,” explained Michael. “People of all abilities need to be able to learn together, be together, and play together. At this park, people of any capability will be able to go and exercise their right to play.”

Model of the future ISUD playground in Canandaigua

The right to play, and in fact the need to join together in play, is an essential part of life. “A common bond that intertwines every human being is play,” said Michael. “For some of us, we do not have that right. We do not have the autonomy to go out and go down a slide, to go on a playground with our peers and be able to swing, to go out and play with our child. This park will eliminate all those obstacles so that each of us, united, jointly, can play together, be together, and grow together.” For many, it cannot come soon enough. “I was speaking with a gentleman last year who had an unfortunate accident at his business and now is assisted by a wheelchair device. He said, “It will be so great to have the capability to go down a slide with my grandson. I am not afforded that opportunity today.’” “We never know when our abilities will diminish or may be taken away from us,” Michael continued. “We may suddenly find ourselves reliant on a wheelchair or other mobility device. This park is important–to people, to families, to communities–because it desegregates those individuals with different abilities and allows them to play alongside their peers in a space where they would not have autonomy otherwise.” The benefits of such a park hit close to home. “We have several friends with wellbodied children,” shared Michael. “This park will allow them to gather with MJ and play together. They are not afforded that opportunity today.” The Bentleys anticipate breaking ground with the park between December 2020 and January 2021. “We have raised half a million dollars with $495,000 to go,” stated Michael. “We just started a new campaign entitled, Give the Gift of Play, and we hope to open in mid-June 2021.” Of course, some of the biggest factors will be funding and community support. “The best way to help is to get involved,” said Michael. “Give back to your community, share our information on social media, get on your phone and tell someone about us. A park for all abilities is necessary for every community, and we are going to start right here.” For more information, visit www.dreambiginclusion.org.

SMART TECHNOLOGY

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Holiday Decorations Can be Dangerous DEAR PAW’S CORNER: My aunt was admiring the wreath I made from natural materials, and during the conversation she mentioned that the berries might be poisonous to my cat, “Darwin.” If this is true, should I remove them from the wreath? -- Katie V., Boise, Idaho DEAR KATIE: Unfortunately, yes. If the wreath is accessible to your pets and an ingredient on it may be toxic, you will need to remove that ingredient and replace it -either with a nontoxic alternative or a silk or plastic equivalent. Dogs and cats alike can be at risk from certain plants, berries and leaves that are common during the holiday season. Holly, mistletoe, lilies and amaryllis all are toxic to pets. Cats are especially known for being attracted to lilies, and they can climb to just about any point in a house, so it’s important to avoid having these around at all. Artificial decorations can also pose a danger. Tinsel is the biggest no-no in a pet household; cats that ingest the sparkly strings can suffer intestinal blockage. Plus, it’s not great for the environment. Breakable ornaments, especially those thin glass bulbs that cats love to bat around, can shatter and cut their paws. And if a cat or dog ingests the broken material ... well, I don’t want to think about that. Candles can singe curious noses and wayward tails; use electric or battery-powered instead. Strings of lights pose a tangling and choking risk; place them up high, in a hard to access spot, and attach them securely using staples so a pet can’t pull them down. Coil extra electrical cord and fasten with a twist tie so pets don’t get tangled. Keep your holidays safe for pets, and they’ll stay merry, just like you. Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@pawscorner. com. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Home security: Wi-Fi enabled doorbells with video capabilities allow residents to see who is at the door without having to open it. Cameras can even be accessed remotely, simulating that someone is at home at all times. Never wonder if you’ve locked the door again with smart locks that can be engaged via a smartphone. Make sure that homes are secured or that pets are behaving while out with smart cameras.

HOW TO M AKE OLDER HOM ES M ORE ENERGY EFFICIENT Stay on top of your home. M uch like older vehicles, older homes require a little extra TLC on the part of homeow ners. Don’t allow your home to fall into disrepair. Even if your energy bills are not on the rise, inspect w indow s and doors to make sure they are closing tightly, as over time such seemingly minor problems can add up to substantial energy loss. Don’t forget to clean gutters and dow nspouts, removing debris that can add up and lead to w ater damage that may ultimately compromise the effectiveness of your home’s insulation.

Act of kindness A huge thank you to the kind lady who paid for my order at Dunkin’ Donuts on Saturday the 28th in Batavia. I was having a tough morning, and you made my day. Many blessings to you and your family, and I will definitely pay it forward! Kudos to feeding the birds How petty! I can’t believe someone would be asked to leave a parking lot over feeding birds! I am an animal lover, especially fond of birds, and I applaud the kindness you have shown by caring for the seagulls. Can’t believe that the world has become so cynical and harsh that

someone would be yelled at, or asked to leave, over feeding a bird! Keep up the good work!

getting my hair done, I paid for my appointment and left. To my surprise, when I went to pay after my next visit, they told me that the gentleman on my previous visit had paid for my appointment. Keep up the great work! Thank you, Penny Saver, for What a lovely surprise and how your great magazine! I’ve been very kind of him! Thank you so reading it for almost 30 years. much! Loser To the loser who stole the World War II Veteran’s Flag I put on my Dad’s grave at [local cemetery] in [local town]: I can’t even say you should be ashamed of yourself, because losers aren’t. To think a veteran or active military member would risk their life for some sad, pathetic grave robber like you is beyond words. It did not blow away, nor did an animal carry it off, other than the two-legged loser that stole it.

Beauty shop blessing I go to the beauty shop every week. On my last visit, I noticed a gentleman sitting in a chair waiting for his wife. After

SAVE TIME WITH EASY MEAL HACKS Look for recipes with as few ingredients as possible. Dishes that include longer ingredient lists typically require more legwork in the kitchen, which usually involves additional prep steps and sometimes longer cook times. Plus, you’re more likely to already have the necessities on-hand for recipes that call for 5-10 ingredients rather than lengthy lists.

Buy pre-cut vegetables to trim time spent on prep work. One of the processes that can surprisingly consume more time than you realize is cutting, chopping and dicing veggies prior to even really diving into a recipe’s instructions. If you’d still prefer prepping your own fresh produce, try completing your work the night before when it doesn’t interfere with quality time spent with family.

THINGS TO LOOK FOR IN A NEW JOB Work/life balance: Before beginning your search for a new job, think about why you want to switch careers or companies. Long hours often leads to burnout. If you’re looking for a new job because you’re burned out, try to find a job that affords you a better work/life balance. A study from the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen found that, with the curious exception of people who work more than 55 hours per week, stress rises accordingly with the numbers of hours worked each week. Keep that in mind if your goal is to find a job that affords you a better work/life balance.

THE RIGHT WAY TO UPDATE A RÉSUMÉ Highlight what you have done. Rather than listing every job responsibility and position in chronological order, use a résumé to highlight specific career accomplishments. This is a time to be your biggest fan and tell the world all of the great things you have accomplished. Remember to include evidence to back up the claims. According to a 2015 survey by CareerBuilder, employers say that résumés that include links to a candidate’s portfolio, website or blog garner more attention than résumés without such links.

THE HISTORY OF HOLIDAY LIGHTS Thomas Edison, the inventor of the first successful practical light bulb, also created the first strand of electric lights that would be used in holiday decorating. By 1880, Edison had standard incandescent light bulbs well sorted out and desired a way to better advertise his invention, so he decided to make the most of the holiday season and put his light bulbs on display. According to a 2003 article in American Heritage magazine titled “The Wizard of Your Christmas Tree,” Edison strung incandescent bulbs all around the compound of his Menlo Park, NJ, laboratory. Edison constructed an eight-mile underground wiring system in order to power this grand light display. Because the laboratory was situated along the railroad that passed between Manhattan and Philadelphia, thousands of people were able to see the display. The concept of electric holiday lights took a bit of time to catch on. Edison’s friend and associate Edward Johnson was tasked with stringing together colored lights in 1882 and placing them on an evergreen tree. Johnson hand-wired 80 red, white and blue light bulbs. In 1895, President Grover Cleveland requested the White House family Christmas tree be illuminated by multi-colored electric light bulbs. In 1903, when General Electric began to offer pre-assembled kits of holiday lights, stringed lights were reserved for the wealthy and electrically savvy. For example, in 1903 a single string of electric lights cost $12, or around $300 today. It would take several more years before holiday lights became a national tradition. On Christmas Eve 1923, President Calvin Coolidge began the country’s celebration of Christmas by lighting the National Christmas Tree on the Ellipse located south of the White House with 3,000 electric lights. Today, illuminated strands of lights have become a large part of holiday celebrations and have even been adopted for use during various year-round events. Such lights can be a beautiful and festive addition to many celebrations.
