Thank you, City Workers! On Dec. 4th, to the city workers of Canandaigua: Thank you for remaking two crosswalks on Main Street at Wood Library and at the Congressional Church. They are beautiful! I would also like to thank them for their conscientiousness as I was in a wheeled vehicle and they had to close off a portion of the sidewalk. I went into the street to carefully go around the trucks, and a worker moved the cones over so I would have more room to safely pass around them. Thank you for your awareness and consideration for my safety. Thank you, Town of Sweden! Thank you to the Town of Sweden for allotting funds to repair the town highway

department parking lot. The highway department workers did a great job! I especially love the new American Flag display. In these difficult times, it is important that we honor our flag in an appropriate way. Thank you again. - A White Road neighbor Juanita of Tops in Hamlin It is always a pleasure to go to your checkout line. Not only are you efficient in your job, but you are personable, which means a lot these days. When I get in your line, it is like having a chat with a friend. We share our laughs, and you also hear my grievances, not skipping a beat, while carrying on and ringing up my groceries. I know you will know who this is, but I

think it is high time that I share my appreciation for your going above and beyond your job description. Thank you for your diligence in doing your job as well as for also making it a pleasant experience when someone needs to check out! Thank you, Laura! Thank you, Laura, for taking the time to deliver the package you found on County Road 37 that should have been delivered to County Road 40. Blessings due your way! Thanks for Breakfast! Many thanks to the person who paid for our breakfast at Brockport’s Golden Eagle on December 11th. The Christmas Spirit still abounds.

Driving Disaster Congratulations to the woman on [local road] the other day. I didn’t see you kill anyone, which is good, but I saw you weaving in and out of your lane. When I passed you, you had your head down looking at your lap. Shame on you! Then when you got up to the cutoff, you aimed for one road while staying in the left-hand lane. Unfortunately, there was a truck in your way. No problem for you. You went to the left of the truck in the grass and tore off a piece of your car in the back from hitting the guard rail. You got off at [local road] and continued straight with your driver’s rear end dragging. I hope I never see you again, and if I do, I’m getting off the highway and walking. It’s safer.

MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel * On Dec. 23, 1620, one week after the Mayflower arrived at Plymouth harbor in present-day Massachusetts, construction of the first permanent European settlement in New England begins. The term “Pilgrim” was derived from a manuscript in which Gov. Bradford spoke of the “saints” who traveled to the New World as “pilgrimes.”

You’re a Mean One, 2020!

Bring Back These 5 Victorian Traditions & Keep your Inner Grinch at Bay By Amanda K. Dudek “2020 Stink Stank Stunk” one ornament read, with the Grinch’s hand holding a bauble for effect. While blessed to have suffered only minor inconveniences from the pandemic, I understand this sentiment. It is nearly New Year’s Day, and many of us are looking forward to closing this chapter and moving on to the next. Nevertheless, the holidays await. How can we find our Christmas spirit at the end of a year which, for the most part, has been anything but holly or jolly? Approximately 90% of Americans celebrate Christmas, many of them as a secular holiday. In fact, much of what we associate with the holiday today came from the Victorian Christmas traditions introduced in the 18th and 19th centuries. After a year that would make Ebenezer Scrooge look like Santa Claus, perhaps trying one or more of these classic holiday practices will revive your Christmas spirit and boost your holiday cheer! When selecting gifts, go small: Resist the draw of the largest items during your holiday shopping. The first Nativity centers around the giving of the most meaningful of gifts. Our present day Christmas tradition of gift giving has been tied to this small but powerful gift as well as to the three gifts of the Magi for centuries. During the Victorian Era, gifts evolved from fruit, nuts, candies, small handmade items and trinkets to larger, more expensive, store-bought luxuries. While the former had typically been hung from Christmas trees, the latter had to be placed on the floor, thus giving rise to the tradition of placing presents beneath the tree. Mak I Moder: Consider browsing your local shops and boutiques for unique luxuries which are both attractive and small enough to decorate your tree. You’ll be supporting community businesses and beautifying your home at the same time! Send holiday cards by mail instead: Social distancing is still a factor, and many of us are experiencing digital fatigue. Give yourself a much-needed break. Unplug, skip the email and social media posts, and mail your loved ones real cards they can hold in their hands. Christmas cards’ existence and quick rise to popularity in the mid-to late-1800’s was likely a combination of social-economic factors and the ingenuity of Sir Henry Cole, often credited with commissioning the Christmas card. Sir Cole, an Englishman, did so in an atmosphere of much wider acceptance of Christmas celebrations in England. This is thought to be largely due to the marriage of England’s Queen Victoria to German-born Prince Albert. Germany had embraced Christmas celebrations centuries earlier. Less expensive color printing methods and dropping postage rates shortly followed. Mak I Moder: Henry Cole’s original Christmas card depicted three generations of the Cole family. Echo it by using family photos in your Christmas cards to make them truly, uniquely your own!

Make sweets & treats more fun with Christmas Crackers: It seems this Victorian tradition is alive and well in Great Britain, and it just might be one worth importing! Invented in the 1850’s by London confectioner Tom Smith, Christmas Crackers are made up of cardboard tubes wrapped in brightly-colored, festive paper twisted at both ends, resembling the bonbons with which they were once filled. Traditional Christmas Crackers contain a paper crown, intentionally corny jokes, and small gifts, candies, and other treats. These little bundles are called Christmas Crackers because they open with a bang when pulled at both ends. Traditionally, guests around the Christmas table are meant to hold one end of their own Christmas Cracker in their right hand while the person to their left grabs the other end. At the same time each guest must cross their left hand over their right to grab the other end of the cracker belonging to the neighbor on their right. This creates a sort of crisscrossed arms “chain” around the table. Then, family and friends all pull the Christmas Crackers at once, creating a chorus of pops and flurry of gifts. Mak I Moder: Choose from a surprising variety of Christmas Crackers, ranging greatly in content and expense. It is worth noting that some are designed for children while others are geared for adults. Make Yourself a Bowl of Wassail: First, it’s simply fun to say! Wassail, pronounced wah-sul, was a hot, spiced or mulled beverage - typically hard cider, ale, or wine - served to guests, especially after caroling, to warm them from the winter chill. It was not uncommon to flavor the wassail with spices such as nutmeg, ginger, and cinnamon sticks while sweetening it with brown sugar and whole baked apples. Mak I Moder: When preparing wassail for your next holiday get together, be sure it is both warm and spiced when selecting a recipe. For a tropical twist, combine cider, dark rum, and baked pineapple chunks, and for a family-friendly wassail, skip the spirits and use only regular apple cider instead. Do a little Christmas jig: Believe it or not, dancing has a long association with Christmas celebrations. Families, friends, neighbors, and even businesses would throw holiday parties which commonly included food, drink, music and dancing. Guests might dance the waltz, the Polka, a country-dance or any number of other popular options. Mak I Moder: We certainly will not be throwing any holiday dances or get togethers this year. However, with many families staying home on Christmas, this is the perfect opportunity to crank up the holiday tunes and join in with your kids in some sweet dance moves for a family rock around the Christmas tree. After all, it’s a Christmas tradition! ° µ ¾ À É ° ° É Ì Ñ Ò Ñ Ò Ó °

Many critics consider “Bullitt” to be one of the greatest action movies ever made, because of the seven-minute car chase through the streets of San Francisco.

Prostate-Shrinking Medicines and Cancer cancer for several years and am presently on “active surveillance.” My PSAs have been high but steady, running around 7.8 to 9.2. I have a greatly enlarged prostate, which I believe contributes to the high PSA numbers. I would like your opinion regarding finasteride (Proscar), as I am considering taking it. I see one of its side effects is that it increases the risk of developing a very serious form of prostate cancer. Since I already have this cancer, am I at an increased risk of mine growing more aggressive? -- D.N.W. ANSWER: A 2013 study showed that although finasteride reduced the overall risk of prostate cancer from 15% to 10% in men followed up to 18 years on finasteride, there was a small increase in high-grade, aggressive prostate cancer, from 3% to 3.5%. However, there was no increased risk of prostate cancer death among treated men. Several follow-up studies have suggested that the apparent small increase in aggressive prostate cancers reflected an easier ability to find these cancers, since finasteride shrinks prostate tissue, making it easier to both biopsy and read the results. My view is that the apparent increase in aggressive prostate cancer is unlikely to represent a real danger in taking finasteride. There is no evidence to suggest that finasteride would change the behavior of an existing tumor. ***

Fair Housing Statement

PAW’S CORNER By Sam Mazzotta

Small Holiday Gathering Can Still Stress Pets DEAR PAW’S CORNER: This year, we are only going to have a few family members over on Christmas Day. In past years, I’ve put our dog, cat and rabbit in the back of the house with plenty of water and beds to sleep in, so the noise and lights and strange people don’t stress them out. I feel like we can safely keep the pets in their usual spots this year because there will only be eight people here for dinner and presents. What do you think? Cheryl in Lake City, Florida DEAR CHERYL: That’s your call. You know your pets. In addition to the size of the gathering, you should consider the personalities of your guests: Are any of them timid or afraid around pets, and would anyone be upset if your dog starts barking? The big question here is how many strangers each of your pets can handle. Rabbits, for example, are very susceptible to stress and should be kept in a quiet spot and not handled too much by visitors. A calm, well-socialized dog may be able to handle the influx of people. Same with your cat, who will simply disappear to a hiding spot if things get a little overwhelming. Even though it’s a smaller crowd this year, make a plan and share it. How much time should the pets spend with visitors around? When should they be placed in a separate area? (During dinner or when presents are opened, for example.) If a pet shows signs of stress, such as barking, yelping, meowing, hissing or growling, who will grab them and take them to the quiet spot to calm down? When everyone knows the strategy, they can act quickly to keep the party calm and pets healthy and safe. Send your tips, comments and questions to ask@pawscorner. com. STATISTICS SHOW JUST HOW BIG SMALL BUSINESS IS Small businesses have such a big impact on their communities, and the world at large, that it might be time to reconsider refering to them as “small.” According to the World Bank, small businesses have a major impact on the world economy, especially in emerging countries. In such nations, small and medium enterprises contribute up to 60 percent of total employment and up to 40 percent of national income. Small businesses figure to frame their economies in emerging countries in the coming decades, and they’re already doing so in developed nations, such as the United States and Canada.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Getting Through Winter Cold weather is here ... joining the coronavirus and the flu. Such a wonderful trio of events all at the same time. The Old Farmer’s Almanac says that temperatures this winter will be a bit warmer for much of the country, at least for the eastern portion. The other Farmer’s Almanac divides the country in a different way, with the north half of the country seeing the cold. We didn’t want to go outside anyway, did we? This winter especially we need to do all we can to stay healthy. If you live in an especially cold area that’s likely to get a lot of snow and ice, find someone to take care of it and be sure you’re on their storm list. Arrange for prescriptions to be sent by mail from the pharmacy. Stock up on batteries for flashlights. Remember to keep your cellphone charged at all times. Try to stock up on heavy or large items from the grocery store, ideally from curbside pickup. A box of canned goods and extra toilet paper will keep you from having to scramble at the last minute. Don’t try to save money by keeping the temperatures in your house too low. Seniors especially can get into trouble with hypothermia before we even know it. Aim for indoor temperatures of 68 F to 70 F, and put on a sweater! One of the biggest things you can do to stay safe this winter is sign up with the seniors daily check-in, a phone call you’ll receive either from the town or senior center to make sure you’re OK. Or create your own phone tree with friends to check in every day.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

Raymond “Ray” A. Paul Jr. “Bubba” December 10, 2020 Livonia/Honeoye: At age 49, Ray passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, December 10, 2020 at his home in Livonia. He was born in Canandaigua, NY. Ray is predeceased by his mother, Gail O’Connor. Survived by his children, Danae (Everett) Dougherty of Virginia Beach, VA., Raymond Paul III of Virginia Beach, VA., Emma Paul of Virginia Beach, VA.; his father, Raymond A. Paul Sr. of Honeoye; his step-father, John O’Connor of Hemlock; his grandmother, Julia Unamann of Rochester; his sisters, Ann (Bob) Buono of Wayne, NY., Valerie O’Connor of Mooresville, NC.; and his grandchildren, Adrian Dunkle, Jocelyn Dougherty, and Everett Dougherty, along with several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Ray graduated from Livonia High School in 1989. After a couple years working for area car dealers, Ray found his calling in the US Navy. Enlisting in 1990 as a seaman, Ray fast tracked to officer’s candidate school and was commissioned as an Ensign in 1997. Ray advanced to a Navy Lieutenant and retired honorably after 20 years of service. Ray was actively involved with racing at an early age, driving in the rookie class at age 15, at the Canandaigua Speedway and advancing to the Super Stocks at Perry Speedway. While on active duty, Ray found time to race both cars and trucks at several speedways throughout Virginia and Mississippi. Ray had a special relationship with Julie, Jason and Austyn Fugle of Livonia. Ray was crew chief for their racecars. He also helped several other area racers. Ray was an avid hunter and fisherman, but most of all he was a great father who made his passion of racing a family experience. He was sure to include his kids in helping with the racecars. He also made simple things special with his children, like “Tuesdays at the Getty,” or “sneaking” to get them little treats. Ray will be greatly missed. Friends and family were invited to call on Thursday, December 17, 2020 from 11AM to 1PM at the Kevin W. Dougherty Funeral Home, 8624 Main Street in Honeoye, where his memorial service took place at 1PM following calling hours. Interment immediately followed Ray’s memorial service at Lakeview Cemetery on West Lake Road in Honeoye. Memorial Contributions may be made to: Richmond Ambulance Fund, PO Box 469, Honeoye, NY 14471.

FINANCING FUNERALS According to Lincoln Heritage Funeral Advantage, the average funeral costs between $7,000 and $10,000. It can be easy to overlook planning for such a large expense, and many people may think their funeral costs will be covered by their life insurance policies. However, that isn’t always the case and certain complications can arise. The funeral planning information guide Funeral Basics states that sometimes insurance policies become invalid if payments have not been made. Policies may have liens on them, or some named beneficiaries may no longer be alive. This can stall the process as issues are worked through. In addition, it can sometimes take between six and eight weeks for beneficiaries to receive life insurance policy payouts. Since many funerals take place within a week of a person’s death, it’s unlikely that surviving family members will be able to finance funerals with life insurance payouts. In addition, some policies may not be assignable, which means the benefits cannot be assigned to go to a third party who will file the claim for you (i.e., the funeral home or an assignment company with which the funeral home partners). It’s important to determine if an existing policy is assignable and to take appropriate measures if it is not. Individuals may want to consider burial insurance or preneed funeral insurance. Another option is to use preplanning services, which allow people to prepay for funeral expenses and make planning decisions regarding the services and burial so that family members will not be tasked with financing and/or planning a funeral during a difficult time in their lives.

To share a memory or a condolence, please visit: www.doughertyfuneralhomes.com (585) 229-2444

UNDERSTANDING LIFE INSURANCE When choosing coverage, you will no doubt be asked if you prefer term insurance or permanent insurance. Term insurance is the least expensive life insurance, and such policies only last for a predetermined number of years. Men and women may purchase life insurance policies if they only want life insurance until they retire or until their children reach adulthood. Permanent insurance is more expensive and will last from the moment you purchase the policy until your death. Many people choose permanent life insurance policies so the money their beneficiaries receive upon their death can be used to pay estate taxes. In addition, there is an investment component to permanent insurance policies, as a portion of the premiums on such policies is invested (policies will spell out how the money is invested) and allowed to grow tax-free so long as the policy is open. Term insurance only provides protection with no investments. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

Call: (585) 924-2060 VOCATIONAL SCHOOLING CAN PAVE THE WAY TO HIGH-PAYING JOBS Many students believe that the next natural step after graduating from high school is to go off to college. Secondary education has become such a common transition that many parents begin saving for college tuition as soon as their children are born. Although college can be the next chapter in a student’s education, many teenagers still choose to attend trade school. Television personality Mike Rowe says the country is in the midst of a skilled labor shortage because workers lack the necessary training to fill the hundreds of thousands of available jobs. Lack of information may drive the notion that trade jobs are nothing more than a backup plan if college doesn’t pan out. However, by realizing that trade jobs, along with short-term vocational training, is a smart investment - and eventually a lucrative career choice - attitudes about trade schools and laborintensive jobs may shift. A great number of college graduates enter the workforce with degrees that may not help them land jobs. And these students typically carry thousands of dollars in tuition debt. Many college grads are underemployed and working in jobs that aren’t even in their fields of study. Career and technical schools help students develop specialized skills that make graduates immediately marketable in their chosen fields, and trade salaries can be very competitive. EMPLOYMENT
