STATISTICS SHOW JUST HOW BIG SMALL BUSINESS IS Employment ____________________23

Small businesses have such a big impact on their communities, and the world at large, that it might be time to reconsider refering to them as “small.” According to the World Bank, small businesses have a major impact on the world economy, especially in emerging countries. In such nations, small and medium enterprises contribute up to 60 percent of total employment and up to 40 percent of national income. Small businesses figure to frame their economies in emerging countries in the coming decades, and they’re already doing so in developed nations, such as the United States and Canada.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH

The City of Canandaigua

By Keith Roach, M.D.

has published its

Vestibular Migraines Often Include Vertigo ---

2020 Water Quality Report

DEAR DR. ROACH: Can you shed light on how vestibular migraines are diagnosed and the best treatment? -- J.H.

ANSWER: The vestibule of the ear is where the organ of balance is located, so vestibular symptoms relate to balance issues in general, but most commonly, it means vertigo. The term “vestibular migraine” means vestibular symptoms attributed to migraine. Vestibular migraine thus includes migraine headache -- not everyone will have a headache with every episode, but most people with vestibular migraine will have headache with at least some of the episodes -- and vestibular symptoms. These could include vertigo (a sensation of movement when still), unsteadiness or movement symptoms with a change in head position that persists long after the head has moved. Abnormal sensitivity to sound and vision are also prominent in vestibular migraine. There is a similarly named condition, basilar migraine, that also has vestibular symptoms. However, basilar migraine has additional symptoms seen during the early, or aura, phase coming from the brainstem, deep in the brain, such as clumsy movements or confusion. These occur most commonly five minutes to an hour before the headache. Making the diagnosis of vestibular migraine is challenging, since there are many clinical entities with similar symptoms. There is no conclusive laboratory or radiology tests to confirm the diagnosis. In practice, the diagnosis of probable vestibular migraine is made in people with recurrent migraine symptoms associated with vertigo. Often, treatment is begun when the condition is considered probable, and if the person does not respond well to treatment, a more thorough evaluation is considered. Treatment for vestibular migraine is broken down into treatment for acute attacks and treatment to prevent attacks. Many neurologists use diazepam (Valium) and similar drugs for acute attacks. Preventive medicines come in many different families, and the choice of the best agent depends often on other conditions the person has. Everyone with migraine should try to find and avoid triggers. This includes eating on a reasonable schedule and good sleep hygiene. If medications are needed, prescription choices include blood pressure medicines (beta blockers like propranolol and calcium channel blockers), antidepressants and seizure medicines. Over-the-counter options include riboflavin, magnesium, feverfew and coenzyme Q10, all of which have some but not conclusive evidence of benefit superior to placebo.

SENIOR NEWS LINE By Matilda Charles Getting the COVID Vaccine When can we get our COVID vaccine? Seniors everywhere are asking this question, and the answers are often vague, wrong or nonexistent. Per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines, the vaccines will be given first to health care workers, then “frontline essential workers,” seniors in descending order of age and those with high-risk medical conditions. While getting the vaccine to health care workers hasn’t been much of a problem, scheduling seniors has been more problematic. One of the snags has been with distribution. States often don’t know how many doses they’re going to receive, which has made it difficult to schedule people to be at the vaccine site at a certain time on a certain date. A more serious problem came to light when batches of vaccine sent to various states were found to be defective because they hadn’t been kept at the right temperature along their journey from manufacturing to vaccination site. In one state, for example, out of 50 boxes of vials, 35 were found to be defective. All over the country websites have crashed as people have tried to sign up for the vaccine in their area, and many seniors have found the computer program impossible to use. Do you know how to get on the list to receive your vaccine? Do you know what group in your state is currently allowed to receive the vaccine, or what priority group you’re in? Each state has been allowed to decide what its definitions is for seniors -- over 75, over 70 or over 65. Your best bet is to contact your doctor’s office. Ask if they have a wait list or can tell you specifically what steps you should take. Call the hospital and your pharmacy. Call your state’s health department. This is one time where you need to be proactive if you want the vaccine.

This week’s puzzle answer is elsewhere in this paper. The Crossword Puzzle is provided by Tribune Media Services. Any questions or comments should be made to 1-800-346-8798.

Heart-shaped boxes filled with decadent treats are coveted gifts on Valentine’s Day. Chocolate lovers typically have a favorite type of chocolate, whether it’s creamy filled truffles or chocolate pieces with fruit or nut fillings. The tradition of gifting chocolate is anything but new. Chocolate and other sweet treats have been offered for centuries as prized gifts. Even ancient Aztecs and Mayans celebrated chocolate and saw it as a hot commodity. Drinks made of cacao beans would be given as presents to people of high status. Chocolate also would be offered to the gods as a token of appreciation. Cacao beans were even used as a form of currency at one point.

Fairport Lift Grant Program Expanded BY MARTHA MALONE

T

he Village of Fairport Local Development Corporation LIFT Grant Program has been expanded to provide cash assistance to Village Retail and Restaurant businesses impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. The LIFT grant program was introduced in August 2020 to provide reimbursement for purchase of COVID related supplies, services, and renovations to enable businesses to adapt to COVID-19 restrictions. With this program expansion, Village Retailers or Restaurants that are forced to close due to required quarantine and isolation orders may be eligible for $100/day up to a maximum of $1,000, for each normal scheduled business day that the business is closed due to the quarantine/isolation order. Additionally, the LIFT grant program will also provide up to $1,000 to offset the higher costs of takeout supplies and third-party delivery fees incurred by Village Restaurants.

“We recognize the important role that our businesses play in making the Village of Fairport a unique destination for shopping, dining and entertainment,” said Kevin Clark, FLDC Board Chair. “This expansion will help our especially hard-hit Village retailers and restaurants as they adapt to these ongoing challenges. The LIFT Grant program underscores our commitment to ensuring the future of Village of Fairport as a diverse and vibrant business district for residents and visitors alike.” Additional information and applications can be found on the OCED website at www.fairportoced.org

Three trustees were unanimously re-elected to serve three-year terms: Deborah Gregory of Rileys Run, Suzanne O’Connor of Lakeview Ln. and Heather Whiting of Bristol St. The Association’s officers for 2021 are: Jill Werth, President; Leslie Mast, Vice President; Suzanne O’Connor, Treasurer; and Kathy Shay, Secretary. Erin VanDamme will serve as the at-large representative on the Library Board’s Executive Committee. In addition, the Association welcomed new Trustees who were appointed to fill vacancies on the Board: Jill Ehrlinger of Meadowbrook Ln, David Plante of Opal Dr, and Andy Thomas of Silvernail Dr. Outgoing President Laurie Riedman presented a report that included many heartfelt references to the teamwork exhibited by trustees and staff to manage and overcome obstacles in a year marked by pandemic and uncertainty. “Gratitude and agility are words that come to mind as I reflect on the past year,” stated Riedman in a presentation that took place virtually. “We had to act quickly to discuss and approve policies and a contingency budget, plan for the safe reopening of the library, and adopt new practices,” stated Riedman. “Although our building was forced to close for a period of time, the library was ‘open for business’ offering digital library cards and free WiFi. We invested in more ebooks and downloadable audiobooks, and migrated hundreds of programs to online platforms that attracted thousands of participants.” “We established curbside service which continues today, and secured funding for the necessary PPE and supplies so that staff could return to work and welcome patrons back to the building safely.” She

continued, “I am grateful for the staff ’s ‘can do’ attitude and willingness to learn new skills and reach out to community partners so that people in our community could continue to access the lifeenriching and life-sustaining services offered by Wood Library.” Riedman noted the importance of continued community support for Wood Library, “There was much uncertainty surrounding the vote for community-based funding this past Spring. Yet, with more than 18,000 absentee ballots mailed to qualified voters, 71% approved of an increase in library funding.” She continued, “Our donors stepped up too. Despite tough economic times for everyone, our fundraising goals were met and gifts to the library surpassed every expectation.” Riedman noted that this would be her last report as President of the Wood Library Board of Trustees: “I feel tremendous pride in the work we have accomplished together. It has been an honor to serve an organization that gives so much to our community.” Wood Library is a full-service community library and registered 501(c)(3) charitable organization serving everyone who resides in the Canandaigua City School District. Its mission is to provide exceptional public library service in a comfortable and safe environment where people can satisfy their curiosity, stimulate their imaginations, and connect to the local community and to the world. Thank you, COVID testers! I just went to get a coronavirus test at MCC and was very impressed by the improvements that have been made since I was last there in July. The line moved quickly without any bottlenecks, and the workers were all organized and friendly despite the frigid temperatures. Thank you to everyone out there during the weekend, in the cold, doing their part to put an end to this pandemic. You are appreciated!

Rules of the Road I realize that the moment folks’ step inside local stores, they forget right from left, right of way, and all other common sense, but if you are standing at a closed checkout, removing items from your cart, and abandoning them in a pile because you’re too lazy to put them back yourself, you are not in line. Those of us who are ready to check out don’t want to wait for you to waste our time. You should have let the other shopper go first, since you were clearly not in line. Seriously, stop talking on cell phones, stop having conversations in the middle of the aisles, stop leaving your carts in other peoples’ way, and get it together before you get to a checkout. It’s pathetic when self-checkout is easier than waiting for you. GENESEE VALLEY PENNY SAVER

585-310-5117 m www.expertdumpster.com Small Red Truck I was out shoveling the end of my driveway on February 3rd around 9 am. It was the heavy stuff that gets plowed back into the driveway from the town plows. A man in a red pickup with a plow stopped to help by plowing my entire driveway. I do not know who the man was but just want to say thanks again. It was so nice of you to take the time and effort to do this. I really appreciate it and will pay it forward. May good things come your way!

Thanks, Fairport Postal Workers! A huge Thank You to carriers in Fairport who slogged through the extreme volume and weather to deliver the massive quantities of packages in the past several months. All with a smile! And special kudos to the mail staff manning the counters at the Post Office itself--always pleasant, friendly, professional, and informative despite what must have been incredible pressure. Your effort is noticed and appreciated!

Thanks again, Neighbor! Thanks again for my “neighbors” on Brooks Road in West Henrietta for keeping my driveway clear another year. It is nice they take the time to help. Thanks again for all you do, Kitty E.

With Deepest Gratitude! Catholic Charities of Steuben/ Livingston would like to recognize members of our community for stepping up to help a client in need. This family had been living in unsafe and unhealthy living conditions for a while. Over the course of 4 months, Catholic Charities worked with our partners in Livingston County to renovate a trailer for this family to live in. These businesses and individuals donated their time and materials to get the trailer in top shape. This includes roofing, flooring, cabinets, appliances,

Grocery Store Angel Thank you, God, and to the nice lady at the grocery store. I had trouble swiping my card. I tried at least four times, and it would not work. This wonderful woman paid for my groceries. Thank you so much! God Bless You!

Where’s the Justice? Why is the Town of [local town] still holding a pet from her family after almost 8 months? Why has she been purposely neglected while incarcerated: hosed down, not taken out of her kennel, kept from her meds? Is it breed bias? Politics? We all know it’s not because she’s guilty; that’s been proven, proven by a professional and the inconsistent stories of the plaintiff. Do you understand the mental and physical torture you’re putting this living being through? We want justice for Vanessa the dog. She needs to be freed and back with her family where she belongs! To the people involved: you know what you’re doing is wrong.

Iroquois Nation To the person who praises the Iroquois Nation example as the precursor of the Constitution, you don’t know American history. Of the 6 tribes, all but 2 allied themselves with the British Empire during the American Revolution. Joseph Brant, a Mohawk, led raids on the American settlers, brutally killing civilians, even loyalists like Jane McCrea. These settlers, including children, were tomahawked, burned alive, and scalped. the scalp of Jane McCrea was presented to British General John Burgoyne who authorized these raids. The America you now live in and enjoy, as well as our Constitution, exist despite the Iroquois Nation, not because of it.

CHOOSE WISELY IN SELECTING VALENTINE GIFTS Eschew overly personal gifts. If your relationship is in its infancy and you haven’t both mutually expressed interest to take it to the next level, avoid gifts that suggest moving in together (appliances), personal fragrances, couples massages, or other intimate activities. Wait until the relationship has reached certain milestones before getting too personal with gifts.
